As the fundamental factor in real estate is location, the prime objective of violent criminals should be to choose the correct targets. In a recent case that exploded in Oxon Hill, Maryland, about 10 miles from the nation’s Capital, the bad guys chose poorly.

Four suspects thought the odds were in their favor on Wednesday afternoon when they noticed a solitary man working on his truck. Little did they know that he was a ready U.S. Marine veteran, and even though one of them was reportedly armed, their plans quickly went awry.

Choosing the wrong target could have had deadly consequences for four suspects

Jheyco Borda was fixing his truck in his community near the local high school. The four suspects allegedly approached him and demanded that he hand over keys and other valuables, but the goal for the day turned sideways quickly for the attackers.

One allegedly pulled a gun and pointed it at Borda’s head. This was no ordinary target, however, and the Marine veteran quickly seized the weapon and attempted to end the dramatic showdown.

That’s when Borda’s brother realized what was rapidly unfolding in front of the house, and he immediately ran out and subdued another of the alleged attackers. One round from the contested firearm was fired, but it did not strike the Bordas or the suspects.

Youthful suspects had no idea what they got themselves into

Yes, there are happy endings—even in 2026. According to The New York Post, “Within moments, both brothers had thrown their attackers to the ground and restrained them until Prince George’s County Police arrived and took all four suspects into custody.”

As for Borda, he shrugged off his heroic stand with a simple observation. “Once a Marine, always a Marine. It took me one split second. We went to training for the Marines, and that came out right at the moment.”

That moment was clearly demonstrated when Prince George’s County authorities arrived. They arrested all four suspects, and no injuries were reported to the two valiant brothers who defended themselves from apparently random violence.

Another day, another win in the ongoing and fierce battle to protect Second Amendment rights from those who would destroy them.

After Florida lawmakers enacted a 3-day waiting period for weapons purchases in 2018, the legal struggle began. But on Friday, June 5, Attorney General James Uthmeier announced that a settlement had been reached.

“Every government office, including mine, exists to protect your God-given rights as enshrined in the U.S. Constitution,” Uthmeier posted on X. “That’s why we’re settling a landmark federal case that declared Florida’s 3-day firearm purchase waiting period unconstitutional under the Second Amendment.”

Delaying taking possession of a firearm after successful background check ruled unconstitutional

Chief Prosecutor Brian Kramer told Alachua County authorities that the settlement in Dunn v. Glass meant sweeping changes for those seeking to legally acquire a firearm.

He declared that the “Attorney General and other defendants have agreed to the entry of a judgment declaring unconstitutional Florida’s statutory and constitutional waiting period provisions to the extent they require a firearm to be held beyond the time necessary to complete a background check.”

Such impediments do not withstand honest legal or judicial scrutiny

Kramer announced that his office will also not enforce Alachua County’s 5-day waiting period for handgun purchases enacted in recent years.

He added that such restrictions “cannot be justified under the history-tradition analysis required by the United States Supreme Court’s modern-day Second Amendment jurisprudence.”

The contentious law was passed amid the legal reaction in 2018 to the Parkland massacre. In their rush to do something, anything, lawmakers who normally support the Second Amendment went along with infringing on the right to keep and bear arms.

It wasn’t long before buyer’s remorse set in, and last week’s announcement by the AG’s office was the result of a protracted legal fight for Florida citizens’ gun rights.

The firearm industry trade association, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), announced that the group will challenge Connecticut’s new ban on striker-fire handguns, which are nearly ubiquitous in the shooting community.

State lawmakers claimed to target “convertible pistols,” which are illegally modified with add-ons to make them fully automatic. These handguns are the most popular on the market, and the conversion devices are illegal to even possess in almost all instances.

The ban is set to take effect Oct. 1, 2026.

State officials chose to go after gun owners who respect the law

NSSF Senior Vice President and General Counsel Lawrence G. Keane blasted state leaders for pandering to the criminal element while targeting upstanding community members.

“This law, and similar laws passed in other states, punishes law-abiding citizens by infringing on their Second Amendment rights to legally obtain the firearms they choose to protect themselves and their families against criminals who, by definition, have no respect for life or law,” Keane said.

He went on to cite the Heller decision to show how Connecticut lawmakers ran afoul of the Constitution.

Connecticut is likely not the last state to enact such a ban

The NSSF consistently warns gun owners that such modifications are illegal and that these acts are serious felonies. Punishments may go as high as 10 years in prison and $250,000 in fines.

Gov. Ned Lamont (D) originally sponsored H5043, so it surprised no one when he signed the bill into law last week. Handguns purchased before October are exempted—for now—though there are glaring recent examples of politicians later changing their minds.

Connecticut officials modeled their legislation on California’s ban enacted in 2025. Bans are also pending in Maryland and New York, and a handful of other anti-2A states are likely to follow.

There is a lawsuit ongoing against the Golden State’s gun control regime, and with the NSSF’s latest announcement, another powerful challenge is in the works. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and gun rights groups will take it one state at a time until such laws are historical novelties.

The public’s appetite for the most advanced and safest firearms did not dissipate in May, according to the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF).

Adjusted retail sales numbers showed another increase, even as the overall number of National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) checks dropped. The industry trade association sifts through raw numbers of checks and determines which correlate with actual sales and which are conducted only for permits and permit renewals.

Opposition to gun rights has not slowed US sales

From the NSSF: “The May 2026 NSSF-adjusted (NICS) figure of 1,105,758 is an increase of 3.2 percent compared to the May 2025 NSSF-adjusted NICS figure of 1,071,685. For comparison, the unadjusted May 2026 FBI NICS figure of 1,780,230 reflects a 10.9 percent decrease from the unadjusted FBI NICS figure of 1,998,440 in May 2025.”

What this means is, despite the decline in overall checks, a sophisticated perusal of the data reveals the truth. Firearm sales remain strong in the U.S. despite the best efforts of Second Amendment opponents to eradicate the right to keep and bear arms.

May saw a fourth straight month of increased NSSF-adjusted NICS checks

After a small January dip, weapon transactions increased year-over-year for the fourth straight month in May.

As for NFA items that require NICS checks be sent to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), the public’s demand continues to soar since the $200 tax on suppressors and short-barreled rifles was eliminated.

The NSSF reported that April’s figure was up 130 percent, and last month witnessed another increase of over 100 percent.

Given the state of domestic and international affairs, it is not surprising that law-abiding citizens continue to arm themselves. It is a perfectly reasonable action from a free people faced with uncertainty.

Power corrupts, and its corrosive effects are evident in private organizations that believe they can dictate how others live their lives. One HOA in Port St. Lucie, Florida, backed off from such an act this week after a stern letter from the state’s top prosecutor.

When it comes to the Second Amendment, the Tradition Community Association greatly overextended its reach. The HOA recently accepted a new rule banning the legal possession of weapons, including concealed carry, in common areas and gathering spaces.

Just like that, some 10,000 residents lost much of what it means to keep and bear arms. But, no more.

HOA learned in no uncertain terms that the Second Amendment applied to them

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier quickly sent a warning letter to the association, making it clear that private employers in the Sunshine State are barred by law from discriminating against employees and others for keeping and bearing arms.

Uthmeier stressed in his missive to the HOA that the group lacked the authority to enforce its policy. “Similarly, any person visiting the common areas—residents, potential residents, and guests alike—are invitees under the statute and cannot be expelled from exercising their constitutional right to keep and bear arms.”

There are very likely more Florida HOAs not complying with state law

The requirement was such an overreach that it prompted Port. St. Lucie Police Chief Leo Miemczyk to issue a clarification. He told all concerned that HOA violations are not criminal infractions and, therefore, city police will not enforce them.

Uthmeier warned other HOAs that they could be next if they do not comply with state law and the Second Amendment.

“We are working with the [Tradition Community] Association to ensure this policy change is permanent and complies with FL law,” the AG announced. “For others who’ve reached out about their HOAs, don’t worry, we hear you.”

On Wednesday, some much-needed good news for Virginia’s sporting community came when Lynchburg Circuit Judge Patrick Yeatts stopped the state’s latest push to conduct universal background checks on all private gun sales.

Attorney General Jay Jones (D) was the driving force behind the state’s request.

After the controversial law went into effect last year, gun rights advocates won an injunction in October, which was all well and good until Second Amendment opponents took control of the state in early 2026. In January, anti-gun forces in the Virginia legislature passed a law to counteract the judge’s order and resume the checks.

State agency quickly updated its website after Wednesday’s ruling

In Wednesday’s ruling, Yeatts wrote that “the Virginia Department of State Police (VSP) is enjoined and prohibited from administering, enforcing, or otherwise imposing upon any person the requirements (of the background check law).”

The VSP immediately amended its website after the ruling and asserted it is “in compliance with the injunction.” Officials told inquirers that the agency “currently cannot provide criminal history background checks for the private sale of firearms.”

2A advocates can celebrate a win against Virginia’s gun control regime

Gun Owners of America (GOA) and the Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) successfully sued the state over the statute. Both sides in the dispute are expected to return to the Lynchburg courtroom later this month, but the injunction remains in full effect.

VCDL head Philip Van Cleave told a phone interviewer that his organization is pleased that the judge stepped in and restored separation of powers.

“This is what we had hoped for and felt would happen,” he said. “The governor and the General Assembly have violated the Constitution, and when you do that, you’re going to be struck down.”

Lawmakers passed the mandate for background checks for private sales in 2020, but the federal age requirement for gun buyers under 21 led to a protracted legal battle. State authorities enforced the short-lived law for a single week before the latest court decision.

The Second Amendment Foundation (SAF) and its partners filed suit against several Bergen County, New Jersey, officials in November on behalf of Elsid Aliaj, and now the legal action includes two more Garden State plaintiffs.

His wife was involuntarily admitted to a facility over mental health concerns in April 2025. The issues were largely due to the language barrier, and she was diagnosed with pregnancy-related adjustment disorder.

For this, authorities confiscated her husband’s firearms. More than a year later, Aliaj still does not possess his legal weapons, and the original suit against the county’s leadership just got stronger.

Innocent gun owners lose their rights over others’ actions

SAF Senior Director of Legal Operations Bill Sack blasted local officials for going after law-abiding citizens’ firearms.

“Bergen County’s very clear policy is: If you live with a prohibited person, or even someone suspected of being prohibited, your rights can be taken away,” Sack said. “This took the form of permit denials and revocations, and outright gun confiscations. What we learned after filing this case on behalf of Mr. Aliaj is that the constitutional abuse he suffered was all too common in Bergen County.”

County officials are free to deny gun rights for virtually any reason

SAF’s gun rights advocates learned in the duration that there were more victims of this unjust practice in Bergen County. Both of the newly added plaintiffs lost their lawful weapons over concerns about their loved ones.

Monday’s complaint noted that the plaintiffs were denied their Second Amendment freedoms “not premised upon any allegation that plaintiffs themselves are prohibited, but rather by association with a cohabitant who is so prohibited or otherwise disqualified, or by association with a cohabitant who county defendants perceive to be so prohibited or otherwise disqualified.”

Second Amendment freedoms must not be so arbitrarily granted that authorities may yank them away over nothing more than “the state’s concerns.”

The present situation in Bergen County is the very definition of a “slippery slope.”

Facing a Supreme Court that ruled his actions were unconstitutional, President Andrew Jackson in the early 19th century famously and perhaps apocryphally challenged justices to enforce their decision.

Of course, the esteemed judges had no actual power to ensure that their rulings would be enforced, and Jackson knew it. Unfortunately for American democracy, that utter lack of respect for constitutional checks and balances found a new home in Virginia’s exploding gun control regime.

Permanent injunction be damned, full speed ahead!

Last week, Virginia State Police announced that the universal background check requirement, including for private sales, will be enforced again. This, despite a Circuit Court injunction imposed last October barring officials from doing exactly that.

The Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) filed a successful challenge against the law, and the injunction remains in place.

The group and its allies quickly responded, with VCDL President Philip Van Cleave declaring that the state police’s brazen decision will be forcefully challenged.

Governor’s office believes it can simply ignore court orders

“The Virginia Attorney General’s office just informed us that the Virginia State Police intend to enforce universal background checks for private gun sales in direct disregard of the court order halting enforcement,” Van Cleave said. “Gun Owners of America and VCDL’s motion for contempt of court will be filed tomorrow.”

Authorities claim that a new state law nullifies the injunction, and its emergency clause means it is set to take effect July 1.

The plaintiffs charge that Virginia’s executive branch demonstrated an utter disregard for the rule of law. Officials believe they are free to ignore the court’s permanent injunction “simply because they passed a new law saying they could.”

In fact, because the permanent injunction remains in full effect, gun rights advocates noted that only one conclusion can be reached. The state “stands in deliberate and willful violation of this court’s order.”

The well-worn script that follows a justified defensive shooting in the U.S. usually results in law enforcement commending the citizen for being their own first responder. The defender, in most locales, will be exalted as a hero who stood up to the bad guys and won.

Then there’s Des Moines, Iowa.

Late last month, a 22-year-old man was sitting in his car when a young mob allegedly attacked him. The driver, who does not face charges, fired his legal weapon in self-defense and struck and critically wounded a 17-year-old suspect.

Official picked an odd time to lecture public on self-defense

Now, if the self-defense shooting had happened in Los Angeles, New York, or Chicago, the good citizen could expect legal pushback. But in Iowa?

For reasons unknown, Des Moines Police Sgt. Paul Parizek decided the incident meant authorities should lecture law-abiding gun owners on how to defend themselves. He noted that more taxpayers now carry weapons than in the past.

“There’s been several changes in gun laws here in Iowa over the years. And the one thing that we’ve seen, the byproduct of that, is there’s more guns out there.” Yes, Iowa became a constitutional carry state five years ago, so obviously, the people will be even more prepared.

The people have every right to protect themselves and their loved ones

Parizek continued. “Somebody can’t drive by and flip you off, and you can’t shoot them. That’s not a response for that. You can’t say I was scared they were going to get out of their car. There has to be a threat.”

Assuming there’s not been a recent rash of bird-flipping-related shootings, his comments are not what you’d expect when a brave citizen holds off an alleged attacker. And, as a law enforcement official, his comments could give reasonable Iowans pause about the legality of armed self-defense.

That would be wrong. Every law-abiding American has the fundamental right to protect themselves and their loved ones. If the Des Moines shooting had been a case of overreacting to a perceived threat, Parizek’s words would carry more weight.

But it was not. Instead, it was yet another example of an armed citizen surviving a violent assault.

There’s no better way to show your patriotism than with merch that speaks before you do.

Virginia’s all-out attack on what are falsely deemed “assault firearms” quickly stirred a wave of opposition. Gun rights stalwarts quickly filed multiple lawsuits, and more legal challenges would not be surprising against the state’s out-of-control gun control regime.

Now comes word that controversial Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) faces even more difficulties getting her underlings to comply with her sweeping push. Commonwealth Attorneys and sheriffs recently declared they will not enforce the new gun restrictions if or when they take effect July 1.

More opposition is almost certain before law takes effect July 1

There are currently five prosecutors who announced they have no intention of infringing on Second Amendment rights afforded to all law-abiding citizens.

Commonwealth Attorneys in Powhatan, Pulaski, Scott, Smyth, and Spotsylvania Counties recognize that the state has no business usurping the Bill of Rights and the U.S. Supreme Court. Prosecutor Kemper Beasley III of Buckingham County appeared on the fence when asked by Bearing Arms for his position on the ban.

Attorneys chose to uphold their oaths to the Constitution over political posturing

He cited loyalty to the founding documents of the nation and Virginia before adding that he believes that Spanberger’s pet project will be struck down.

Beasley is certainly correct in his thinking, though it is unclear how his office will enforce the law starting in July—or whether it will be enforced at all.

Pushback is also strong from multiple Virginia sheriffs who back the rights of good people to keep and bear arms. Campbell County Sheriff Whit Clark told ABC13 that gun grabbers know they are violating the Constitution.

He called the state prohibition “an infringement on the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owning citizens” and added that the sweeping ban is “nothing more than a gun grab.”

Clark told the outlet that he swore an oath three times to protect the Constitution, and that was his intent. “We’ll deal with it however we must deal with it, but hopefully it will be a quick decision rendered from the courts.”
