Villeroy & Boch - The Standard in Dinnerware

Villeroy and Boch became the supreme dinnerware company it is today when two rivals Francois Boch and Nicolas Villeroy merged their two companies to form one company in 1836 in order to survive. Today the company is world renowned for its future thinking designs of dinnerware, glassware and cutlery.

Francois Boch originally started producing ceramic dinnerware - plates, cups and pots – in 1748 in the small village of Audun-le-Tiche, by hand. In 1809 he bought Benedictine Abbey and set up, designed and invented many production machines for use thereby laying the ground work for a transition from ceramics made manually to industrial manufactured dinnerware. In 1829 his factory in Mettlach invented a new type of dinner war called Porcelain Stoneware which is bright white and extremely hard.

Nicolas Villeroy started in dinnerware manufacturing in 1791 with his factory in Vaudrevaneg. His factory produced dinnerware using a copper plating system for serial production.

Villeroy & Boch have achieved success for over 260 years through inventiveness, creativity and an entrepreneurial spirit. They offer a large range of products from their two main product sectors "Bathroom and Wellness" and "Dinnerware".

Lennox China - The Dinnerware of Presidents

Lenox was started in 1889 by its founder Walter Scott Lennox. Born in Trenton NJ in 1859, the foremost center for the American Ceramics industry in that time, Walter Lennox combined his interest in drawing and clay and began working at a pottery plant as a designer and decorator at 16 years old.

When he turned 22 he became joined Ott & Brewer as their design director. Ott & Brewer eventually folded a few years later and that’s when he decided it was time to go it on his own.

A mere seven years after taking the design director position Walter Lennox was starting his own company the Lenox's Ceramic Art Company opening it’s doors in 1889. Walter created his ceramics as an art and even positioned his new company as an Art Studio instead of a factory. Most of his early productions were one-of-a-kind made of ivory china.

The Lenox China was originally made buy only 18 employees and consisted of a line of vases, pitchers and tea sets. Since he had laid the groundwork for his productions to be consider art they were picked up by the most elite shops of the time. In 1897 even the Smithsonian Institution showed a collection of Lennox China.

In the early 1900’s fine home dining came into vague and Lennox was quick to transition his company to handle the new dinnerware needs of the country. He began offering full sets of dinnerware to very exclusive families in early 1902, fighting the European control over the fine china trade.

As America’s demand for Lennox China continued to grow he changed the name of the company to Lenox Incorporated to reflect his reversal of philosophy from the Ceramic Art Company to more of a mass production company.

The company’s first large scale productions of Lennox China came in 1910 and were patterned with transfer prints that were then colored by hand. In 1917 Lennox China went to full color lithographic designs. The original two designs, Mandarin and Ming, were popular in America for over 50 years. These decals made sure every piece of dinnerware was decorated exactly the same and created a type of trademark look. Hosts were excited to have the new patterns on their dinner table that were easy to recognize so their guests knew they could afford Lennox China.

Lennox was becoming known as the china to have in the United States. In 1918 the white house ordered 1,700 pieces for official state services. Lennox China was the first American china to be used at the white house and has remained that way since.

Walter Scott Lennox dies in 1920 having succeeded in his quest for "perfection of American porcelain."

Well, believe it or not we are heading into the Spook-tacular season of Halloween! I realize that the season is about costumes, candy, cake doughnuts and cider…but you know me, Mr. Dinnerware and I’m thinking about the coordinating dinnerware for this scary holiday!

While most of you are pondering the awesome Halloween parties you will be throwing or attending I’m thinking about the food that will be served and what it will be served on! In fact I came across the coolest recipe brownies a few years ago on Betty Crocker’s website. My kids and I had a blast making them and we actually won the cookie contest at a neighborhood party we attended! And aside from being fun to make and obviously well received by our friends, they were delicious…mmmmh!

Now to my favorite part…what to server your Halloween treats on! The above brownies are being served on a Waechtersbach (pronounced “Vecter-spock”) Kiwi plate. It’s a beautiful German dinnerware line that comes in a dizzying array of colors that can brighten any day. The nice part about using a Waechtersbach solid color serving piece is you can use it year round.

Housewarming Gifts That Your Friends May Actually Like

Have you ever been put in the awkward situation of buying a housewarming gift for a neighbor or acquaintance? I know I have.

You never really know what to get them. You don’t want to put too much effort into it, but at the same time no one wants to see their purchase be rejected or - much worse - “regifted” down the line (Seinfeld aficionados will understand what I’m talking about).

Anyway, with age, I’ve gained wisdom (at least I like to think so). Now, instead of buying plants or other novelties, I give serveware.

It just makes sense. Once they’re settled in, they’ll probably be entertaining guests at their new place. Those cheese and crackers and teeny tiny cocktail dogs have to go in something.

I found some great serveware the other day by American Atelier. They have it all – cheese trays, hostess sets, coffee and tea sets. They even have a buffet warmer.

I’m personally fond of the six section “chip ‘n’ dip” server that’s reminiscent of an artist’s palette.

To Late To Give Dinnerware?

Well that depends on what type of dinnerware and where you buy it.

I like most men, do my Christmas shopping in days and sometimes in a daze and wait til just about the last minute. Yes, I started and almost finished my Christmas shopping last night.

But what happens if dinnerware is on your Christmas list, maybe you need to find Fiestaware or Lenox or Pfaltzgraff what is a shopper to do?

First Question: Will the dinnerware be used on Christmas Day?
If yes - Then you are going to have to shop and buy locally. (if possible)
If no, then you can shop online but you need to have something under the tree.

Second Question: How we gift recipient react if the real gift is not undeer the tree?
a. Happy becuase they know that they will get something that they want
b. Sad, they don't like to wait for gifts

If the person your buying for will be happy receiving a late gift, here are a few tricks so you have something under the tree.

1. If it is part of the China pattern, wrap one of the plates from your China and include a photo of the new item.
2. Hang an envelope on the tree and write a little personal note as to why they are special and that Santa was so busy with the getting presents for the kids that he is making a special late December delivery just for you.

Fiestaware in stock, it has been hit or miss the last few holiday seasons but our friend Scott sells Fiestaware online, says it is true.

For those who like to give Fiestaware plates, pitchers and tableware accessories have been hit or miss, but Scott said inventory levels are well balanced this year and that if you are looking to give Fiestaware this holiday season this is the weekend to take action.

Top Dinnerware Accessories

What are the top dinnerware accessories for the person who already have a dinnerware set?

Well, it depends on where they are in life and what they serve. (Let me explain a little further)

Grandparents who host family meals
- If they use the fine china or a casual pattern, look or a need or add on salt and pepper shaker, gravy boat, a platter or nice bowl is always welcome.
- If they collect or treasure their dinnerware look for a holiday accent plate in their pattern, a Fiesta disc pitcher, a Portmeirion flower plate, etc...

Parents with kids
- If they have meal but have kids the basics are likely to get broken. Consider an extra placesetting if they have the minimum. Then move on to the basic accessories serving bowls, a platter and salt and pepper shakers. (Cream and sugar are nice, but are not used as much as they used to be and less around children)

Singles who entertain
- Go big, go bold, and have fun. Unless the single you know already have selected a pattern of choice. You can select some great solid color gifts that will mix and match with the basics. Serving bowls and plates top the list fo single life style. Weachtersbach and Fiestaware are great choices.

Dinnerware – Square is the New Round

Dinnerware trends come and go but one trend that continues to emerge is square dinnerware. I believe the emergence of this pattern is that sushi and asian food has blended into American society and that the square design is the only fresh plate style.

While researching this topic, I was surprised by the number and basic patterns that now include square plates in addition to the traditional round ones. I expected most to be an either or scenario.

The other finding is the square dinnerware is a casual trend that can be found with ceramic, earthenware and stoneware patterns, however it is not being embraced by the fine china lines like Lenox and Royal Doulton. They use some square dinnerware pieces here and there but will they commit to an all square pattern? Only time will tell.

If the trend continues to gather steam,
I expect some fine china to be square shaped within 2 – 3 years.

Fiestaware - Changes in the Dinnerware Line Up

This year Fiesta launched Evergreen but there was no announcement of a retired color.

Now we have learned the Fiesta Persimmon will move to the inactive list. What does inactive mean, well it means that they can bring it back for special runs and that the color is not officially retired.

In adition, Fiesta is also dropping a few dinnerware items from its line up. This will impact all colors. The items include:

Discontinued / Retired Dinnerware Patterns

Some dinnerware patterns and colors are classic and last year after year, Blue Willow and Cobalt Fiesta are two examples but other dinnerware patterns are more trnedy or just cannot make the grade year in and year out.

For whatever reason lack of sales, boring, the line is taking a new direction, dinnerware gets discontinued and retired. I like to think of discontinued as never returning to store shelves and retired as meaning someday this pattern could return.

The Pros and Cons of discontinued dinnerware

Pros:
Cost, often discontinued means sale or bargain, this is great for someone looking for their first set of dinnerware and doesn't mind mixing and matching patterns and / or solids together for a fun tablesetting.

Cons: If you have invested in a dinnerware pattern that you really love and have the basics, then completing your set and accessories may prove difficult. While in the short term you may be able to find bargains on odds and ends, down the road replacement pieces may be more expensive.

So how does one keep on track of whether their dinnerware is retired or not? Well, one way is to check Home products tend to launch once or twice a year and during these times products are retired and new ones are introduced. Get use to check on the web site where you bought the dinerware. Just be aware that the more trendy your dinnerware, the more likely it will have a limited run of 2, 3, or 5 years.

The good news is the manufacturers normlaly only expand the prodcut lines once they see a product is successful.

Higher priced limited run patterns, can really offer a challenge. For example Tracy Porter has some of the most beautiful pieces and patterns out there. However when it is gone it will not be easy to find it.

One suggestion is, if you use this dinnerware often, buy one or two extra place settings. Then if something breaks or gets chipped you still have a full set. I would also recommend getting that one accent piece that you wanted but maybe did not buy, maybe a platter, bowl or dessert dishes. Why, becuase when they are gone and you want it; it may be impossible to find it.

Chef's Make Their Mark on Dinnerware

First they were Chef's! And then they became Celebrity Chef's with cooking shows, reality restaurant shows and much much more. Now these Chef's want more than to feed you but they want to supply the dinnerware you eat off of.

So let's see what some of these famous Chef's have cooked up for your dining room table.

Emiril has come out with smoe moderately priced dinnerware that comes in simple yet classic styles. I think these three are great and almost all are under $40!

From Left to Rigth are Emeril's Super White Dinnerware, Very Berry Professional Dinnerware and Desert Dunes Dinnerware. The Professional Dinnerware shown in red comes in blue, adobe, linen, and titanium.

I found all of these to be stylish and perfect for any home.

Next is Gordon Ramsey
He may be hell in the kitchen but he makes a beautiful placesetting.

Gordon Ramsey has teamed up with Royal Doulton to provide two signature dinnerware lines; Gordon Ramsey Platinium Dinnerware and Gordon Ramsey White Dinnerware both are lovely to behold, but come at a higher price level than Emeril, but from what I have seen it is worth it.

Very nice and tastefully done Gordon and Royal Doulton.

Next Wolfgang Puck
He is known for great food and taste in the kitchen, but at the table he fell a little short. We found this Bistro set for $60 (a good value) at HSN but overall it left me thinking that this dinnerware just didn't reflect the man behind the name.

With so many celebrity chef's and celebrity cooks leaving the kitchen to sit at the table how long can it be before Bobby Flay, Rocco, and Racheal Ray grab a chair and design their signature lines?

Tailgating Dinnerware done Right!

Last year is saw some collegiate dinnerware that while interesting, looked like a 5 year old had designed it. I guess in the theme of country arts and crafts someone thought that college alumni will buy anything as long as their teams name is on it.

Well, while I am sure some of that dinnerware is still out there and even more of it might be on ebay. I found a great and stylish dinnerware for tailgating professionals and best of all it is not team centric - so now you can use it for a Penn State tailgate no Saturday and a Steelers tailgate on Sunday.

Fiesta announces the arrival of Evergreen Fiestaware!

Within days the latest Fiesta color will be heading out to retailers across the country and happy Fiesta Fanatics will purchase this new color.

Let take a closer look at Evergreen and see how eat stacks up.

The color is pleasing but neither a bold nor a pastel - Homer Laughlin terms it as "an earthy color the is warm and comforting." It is easy to see it as a traditional Holiday dinnerware as it reminds me of Christmas trees.

While reading the HL China press release they noted the continuing earth, botanical, green and nature themes. The also noted how this color works with many others. Well lets see...

White & Evergreen Fiesta - Great combination!
Black & Evergreen Fiesta - Good combination
Scarlett & Evergreen Fiesta - It looks like this could go - very Christmas (want to see in person)

Cinnabar & Evergreen Fiesta - First Impression, maybe for a late autumn table - but better combinations
Persimmon or Tangerine & Evergreen Fiesta - I need to see in person but this combination could really pop - Halloween, Thanksgiving, Autumn and changing leaves
Shamrock & Evergreen Fiesta - First thought was no way, then I said maybe another - I need to see in person. This could could provide a nice contrast in the spring.
Yellow or Sunflower & Evergreen Fiesta - Should be a nice contrast, I would think the softer yellow would work best.
Plum or Heather & Evergreen Fiesta - Don't see this working
Cobalt or Peacock or Turquoise & Evergreen Fiesta - I am struggling to see these working together maybe Cobalt but it might be a stretch.

So the new color is on it's way and based on what I see it should be very successful. So get ready and be prepared for a great fall when the new Fiesta starts hitting the stores.

New Fiestaware Color, drum roll please... Heather Fiesta and if you don't know what color Heather Fiesta is, it light purple.

Last week, Homer Laughlin China announced the new color will be Heather, which i sa very charming purple. The color actually reminds me of purple kool-aid. And since I like purple kool-aid, I like this new Fiestaware color.

While the announcement came out last week the dinnerware won't ship until early fall. Not sure you want ot wait that long then take a look at these colorful disc pitchers now.
