From time to time, parents ask if we can help enforce the rules they set for using mobile phones. We can make it more likely that kids will use their phones responsibly, but the most important thing is to set clear expectations about what’s acceptable. If you haven’t already established ground rules, expect some unwelcome surprises!

If young children have cell phones, parents need to be aware of who they’re talking to. Use the Blocklist to identify numbers that can reach your kids, or you can block every number that’s not already a trusted contact. When unapproved numbers call, our app will pick up and hang up the line automatically.

Mr. Number stores a history of phone activity and keeps a list of the Top 25 numbers that call and text most frequently. We also display the #1 contact from the last 30 days, along with alerts about calls that haven’t yet been returned. With these features, you can see who your children talk to at a glance.

A recent study reports that children aged 12 to 17 send a median of 60 text messages each day, with older girls sending about 100! Following a budget is a great skill to learn when we’re young, which is why you and your kids can easily track the number of text messages and call minutes used in the last 30 days.

Some parents collect their kids’ phones during homework time, but our app makes that unnecessary. To reduce homework distractions, use Availability to select Voicemail mode, then create a custom message like “studying for Spanish test.”

If you activate “Send text back to callers,” when a friend calls or texts your child, the call will go straight to voicemail and the caller will automatically receive a text message.

Availability also reduces distractions while driving. We recently heard from a nervous dad whose daughter just got her license. Our suggestion? Ask her to set Availability to Silent whenever she’s behind the wheel. If she sticks with the practice, she’ll be one of the least-distracted drivers in her social set.

According to one mom we talked to, eliminating constant reminders about not using the phone in the car or during homework/dinner time avoids mutually annoying conversations and promotes mutual trust and respect. It’s certainly worth a try!

One last note: apps update constantly with new features, including ours. If your kids use communications apps, check in with them every now and then to see what’s new or changed.

The Walmart gift card scam is probably the most popular smishing racket reported by Mr. Number members, but a similar con game is running close behind: “Apple is looking for people to test AND keep a new iPhone5!”

Trust us on this one: no one from Apple is texting random folks to ask if they’d like to test an “iPhone 5.” #scam #nophonedrama

A few facts to bear in mind:

There is no “iPhone5.”

Apple doesn’t recruit product testers via random SMS messages.

There’s no such thing as a free lunch. Or smartphone.

Like other scams, this offer attempts to get personal information that can be used to a scammer’s advantage. To claim a free iPhone or iPad, you’ll have to text back a code to reply or visit a Web site to “verify” your identity by submitting your date of birth, Social Security number, or credit card info. If you text back to claim your prize, you’ll likely end up subscribed to an expensive service that sends horoscopes, cute cat photos or inspirational quotes (and costs several bucks per message).

Reports of this scam spiked after Apple founder Steve Jobs died in October 2011 and continued to increase during the buildup to the new iPad earlier this month. As two of the most popular products available, iPhone and iPad scams are here to stay; If you really want a cool new device, save your money and buy from a party you know and trust!

You spend months polishing your app, pushing it to the store, persuading your friends to try it, getting a great review from some guy in Indonesia and…nothing. There are half a million apps out there and you need a marketing strategy. In fact, you need to figure it out before you start coding.

What about PR? Blogs? Twitter? Facebook? SXSW? Asking users for a five-star review? Yes, these things are important and you have to do them all. But everyone else is doing them too. In engineering terms, PR and social media and conferences and Scoble are necessary but not sufficient. What are you going to do that other people cannot or will not do? That’s strategy.

We’ve identified five winning strategies. If you can execute on all of them you are destined for number one. If you score zero, that’s how many downloads you can expect… Continue reading

The most effective scams tell us what we want to hear: who wouldn’t want a free exotic vacation or a shiny new smartphone to test and keep? Fraudsters play on our hopes and fears, but let’s be honest — we like getting free stuff, and that makes a con artist’s job much easier.

When scammers use the Internet to obtain personal info, it’s called “phishing,” but because these offers arrive via SMS messages, they’re “smishing” attempts. One of the most persistent smishing scams these days is the Walmart Gift Card Scam: a text message informs you that you’ve won a $1000 gift card from America’s largest retailer. To claim your “prize,” just click a link and enter personal details like a social security number or credit card.

Here’s how frequently the phrase “walmart gift card” appeared in comments posted by Mr. Number members who submitted spam reports between June 2010 and March 21, 2012:

The number of complaints exploded in March 2012, so we know these scammers stepped up their game; Walmart issued a statement earlier this month to let customers know about this racket.

Drilling down deeper into our data, many of the most recent reports we received show that gift card scammers are currently targeting people who live in Northern Virginia, where 10 Walmart locations serve about 2 million people (25% of the state’s population).

Protecting yourself from scams like these is relatively easy if you’ll remember one rule: if it seems too good to be true, it probably is.

If you’re the target of a smishing attempt:

Don’t text back to follow any of their instructions.

Tell someone you know, especially elderly friends and relatives.

Report scams to your mobile provider and on Mr. Number.

If you’ve already responded to one of these offers, contact your state’s Attorney General’s office or the Federal Trade Commission (1-877-FTC-HELP).

When we received the Appy Award a few hours later, it was the icing on the cake!

With deep appreciation, we’d like to thank the the Appy judges and the nearly 5 million people who’ve downloaded Mr. Number. Your feedback continues to help us make a powerful, popular app that’s changing the way people use mobile phones.

At Mr. Number, we think that your real social network is made up of the people that you talk to every day – the people that you call and text. Your stock phone and text apps let you send and receive messages, but they do a lousy job of keeping track of all the people who matter to you. Piece by piece, we’re fixing that.

We started with Caller ID so that we could bring identity to the phone network. You don’t get “friend requests” from mysterious numbers or weird email addresses – you can always see a name or a profile. Similarly, we think no one should be able to call or text you without disclosing their name, so we invented crowdsourced Caller ID.

Next we added call and text blocking so that you could “unfollow” or “unfriend” the people and companies that you never want to hear from again.

Then we added status or availability, so that you could let your real friends know when you were free to talk. Many of you liked it, but we had gone as far as we could without tightly integrating with the phone and text apps. You were asking us to display Caller ID results in the call log and let you block texters from the message history, and your messaging status clearly belonged in your messaging app.

We set out to replace the stock phone and text apps completely, and bring them up to the standard of the messaging and social apps that we use every day. In January we shipped the first version of Mr. Number that you could use for all your calls and texts. After a few hiccups (sorry!) you responded amazingly. We’re getting so many downloads each day from Google Play that we now rank higher than FourSquare, Spotify, Evernote, Yelp, Bump and many other amazing apps, and we’re about to cross 5 million users. Thank you!

But that was just the first draft. Today we released a new version of Mr. Number that really does help you stay in touch with the people that you love as well as screening out the people you don’t.

Directory
The new Directory tab shows you your top 25 phone contacts, based on our magical ranking formula. You can see who’s most important to you and who you’ve been neglecting. Swipe to see all your phone contacts, or just a list of Caller ID results from Mr. Number. Swipe again and you’ll see a list of everyone you know who is also using Mr. Number, along with their status.

Ideas
Check out the first version of what we’re calling the Idea tab. Wondering who you should call or text next? The Idea tab shows you your number one contact, recent calls that you haven’t returned and a list of people that you haven’t spoken to in a while.

Pictures
In the inbox, swipe to see a gallery of all the picture messages (MMS) that you’ve ever sent or received. You’ll find pics that you had forgotten about completely.

Quick Reply to Texts
This one is simple but cool. Now you can reply to text messages from the Mr. Number notification, without even opening the app. It’s super fast. (If Mr. Number isn’t your default text messaging app yet, go to the Settings tab to make it the default and turn on Quick Reply too.)

Elsewhere on our site you can read about all the features of Mr. Number.

Download the new version of Mr. Number from Google Play.

Got an iPhone and feeling left out? None of this is possible on iOS, but you can sign our petition to Apple to try and change that.

We’re building the tools to help you keep track of your real social network. There’s plenty more to come. Once again, thank you!

At Mr. Number, we spend a lot of time thinking about privacy. It may be the number one reason you downloaded our app: by screening your calls and texts, we protect your privacy. But we also need to protect the privacy of your contacts and the privacy of other people who call or text you. We’re working on a “bill of rights” to explain this and we’d like to hear what you think.

(1) You have the right to know who is calling you.

No one should be able to call or text you without saying who they are.

To protect your privacy, Mr. Number helps you to identify or block unknown numbers by looking up those numbers in many sources, including the mobile contacts of other users who allow us to do so.

To protect the privacy of those contacts, that’s all we do. You can’t look up a stranger’s name in Mr. Number and find their private phone number.

(2) You have the right to block anyone.

Anyone in the world can make your phone ring. All they need is your number. They don’t have to disclose their own phone number, let alone their name. And once they have your number, you can’t take it back; you can only change it.

Mr. Number lets you block calls and texts from any number, and from people who hide their number. We use your feedback to identify spam calls and text messages and to block those automatically for all users.

(3) You have the right to block Mr. Number.

Unless you’re making commercial calls or sending commercial text messages, if you don’t want us to tell Mr. Number users your name when you call or text them, we won’t.

Our users may decide not to answer your call – many of them automatically block calls from people who block Caller ID – but you control how you appear in Mr. Number.
