It's been a momentous decade for technological advance. Read on to see how far we've come and reminisce about a time where things were simple; that’s right - 2003.

With an influx of anniversaries recently - the fortieth year of the cell phone, the twentieth year of the internet and the tenth anniversary of tech tools that have become an integral part of our life, like iTunes and Skype - we’ve taken a look back at the past ten years of technology. Read on to feel old and amazed in equal measures.

Flashback to 2003

2003 doesn't feel like that long ago does it? Cast your mind back to what you were doing. Maybe you were gasping over the t.A.T.u. music video on MTV, wondering who these Black Eyed Peas were, queuing at the movies to see the last Lord of the Rings film or asking people if they'd seen the new show "Two and a Half Men". Of course, if you hadn't seen it, you'd just have to wait Blockbuster got the DVD in. Unless someone had taped it…

You were probably also strolling around showing off your new Nokia 1100. Features included SMS to many, a calculator, a torch, enough memory for 50 contacts and of course the ability to make those awesome self-composed ringtones. Up until relatively recently, the Nokia 1100 this was still the best selling consumer electronic device in the history of the world, shifting 250 million units since 2003. And guess what - it's still the world's biggest selling phone of all time.

Fast forward to 2007 - the first iPhone appeared, changing our lives forever. Boasting a 2.0MP camera and a 3.5-inch screen, this phone was the dog's danglys, and Apple shifted over 1 million of them in the first 74 days of sale.

But six years later - a lifetime by tech standards - and its bye bye generation 1. This year, the original iPhone will officially be considered "obsolete" or "vintage" by Apple retail stores and service providers, with replacement parts no longer available.

Today, the newest version of the iPhone can hold roughly 28,000 music tracks, run thousands of apps, record high quality video and keep us connected wherever we are. Modern phone services are completely unrecognisable compared to ten years ago, with internet messaging and video calling available on a multitude of devices at any time.

The Google revolution

In 2004, Larry Page and Sergey Brin sold Google shares to the public for the first time, making search an integral part of life and turning the company name into both a noun and a verb at the same time - the ultimate sign of market dominance. And dominate they do, today holding around 80 per cent of the market share despite competition from Yahoo!, Microsoft and a fleet of other search engines.

The social explosion

If you're anything like me, your first internet friend was some guy called Tom and you spent a couple of years assessing your self-worth according to how many top eight friend lists you appeared on. But social media has blown out of all imaginable proportions since sites like MySpace and Friendster blasted onto the scene in 2003.

Since Facebook and Twitter opened up to the masses in 2006, social media has brought us together in a way that was almost unimaginable ten years ago. Stemming from a few early tentative steps, we have now witnessed tweets from space, the President of the United States and the Pope. 9100 tweets are now sent every second, although Facebook still dominates the social world, chalking up its billionth user late last year.

Games

But with a market already saturated with PlayStations, Xboxes and GameCubes, you probably already had all the consoles you needed. That was, until the biggest change in video game technology we've seen in the past decade. Taking over

Samsung Reportedly Developing a 5.9 inch Phablet - Rumor Round up

While the world is waiting with bated breath for a glimpse of the Galaxy S IV from Samsung, it seems the Korean Phone manufacturer has been busy working on another device too.

So what are they working on? Is it a Smartphone? Is it a Tablet? No, it’s a ‘phablet’!

If you are inclined to believe in the rumors, that is. For the company is not telling us anything.

Let’s see what this new device is.

According some industry analysts, it will be the latest iteration of the Galaxy Note, the Note 3, though others beg to differ. It is likely to have a screen 5.9 inches in size, though again there are some who claim that it will sport a 6.3 inch screen. Of course, that does not seem very likely, and most agree that the new device will be a 5.9 incher.

It will also be a progressive increase in size for the Note series which started at 5.3 inches and went on to become 5.5 inches for the Note 2. Therefore, 5.9 inches for the Note 3 is very plausible.

The word is that the processor will be an 8 core Exynos 5 Octa chip with a chipset clocking in at a speed of 200 MHz. To keep abreast of the competition the new device is likely to feature full HD display.

As far as connectivity is concerned, it is thought that the Note 3 will have 4 G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC.

It will most probably feature a high MP camera, on par with the Galaxy S 4, according to people in the know. Seeing that the S 3 has an 8 MP camera, you can expect at least that much, if not more: a 13 MP camera.

It is also expected that the latest version of the operating system from Google, dubbed Android 5.0 Key Lime Pie, will be preloaded on the device. As the new OS is expected to be rolled out in May this year, it gives Samsung engineers sufficient time to optimize it for the new phablet.

The Galaxy Note 3 may have even more of the Galaxy S 4’s features like Smart Pause and Smart Scroll among others. Samsung may include stylus support for the Note 3 too, and provide a refurbished S Pen. This expectation is based on Samsung’s interest in Wacomm stocks. Wacomm manufactures graphic tablets that utilize stylus input.

After the lawsuit filed by Apple went against them, things seemed to get a little alarming for them. But the recent judgement that found the damages awarded to Apple excessive seems to have given Samsung a morale boost.

Samsung seems to be strengthening its arsenal to take on the iPhone 5 and a possible iPhone 6, in addition to the iPad range of tablets. Of course, I don’t expect it to be as popular as the Galaxy S 4 of course, but Samsung looks like they want to give consumers a wide choice as alternatives for Apple’s devices.

Now this is where you might start to cringe, because the 64GB version of Windows 8 Pro is running at $899, and the 128GB version will be going for $999. At the beginning price, you'll be looking at a doubling from the RT version which sells for $499. This is quite a bit of money to throw down for a tablet, and now you might begin to understand why the word “Pro” is in the name.

Realize what you are getting when the two are compared, and it might start making a bit more sense. Generally, you have to be quite the Windows 8 fan to invest in such a heavy product, but you'll certainly be rolling with something unique.

Introduction

Windows 8 is the latest version of Microsoft's Windows operating system. Introduced in September 2011 and released for general availability in October 2012, Windows 8 has a number of key differences to Windows 7 and earlier versions of Windows. The most immediately obvious changes affect the UI; Windows 8 has a new interface that's been significantly altered.

In Touch

The new Windows 8 interface was created with touchscreen device compatibility in mind. This means that users will be able to control Windows 8 applications using gestures. Although Windows 7 did provide support for touch, this was limited. Windows 8 attempts to rectify this, providing an interface that's intended to be as easy to use with touchscreen technology as with a traditional keyboard and mouse.

The addition of expanded touch support is an important feature of Windows 8, as the new OS will be rolled out on Microsoft's various tablet PCs and other touch-enabled devices. User reports indicate that the touch functionality is well-realized and has been successfully integrated into the OS.

Farewell to Aero

The move away from Microsoft's Aero glass-style interface brings a major change to the look and feel of Windows 8. In 2003, when Aero was introduced, translucent "glass" effects were hugely popular; this style was led to a great degree by Apple. By 2009, when Windows 7 was released, the Aero effect had been added to almost every element of the Windows UI. Aero was fairly popular with users, many of whom appreciated its light, airy feel.

While visually appealing, however, Aero proved deleteriously inefficient and power-hungry. The rounded shapes, layers of translucent color, faux-reflections and highlights demanded significantly more electricity to process than simple flat color. While perfectly appropriate for a desktop-oriented operating system, Aero was found to take a heavy toll on the battery life of mobile devices. For this reason, Aero has been scrapped in favor of a crisp, Metro-style interface using squared corners and flat colors to reduce processing power and conserve battery life.

Start Screen

Instead of booting to the familiar Desktop with the Start button in the left-hand corner, Windows 8 takes the user to a new Start Screen. Live tiles allow you to launch applications and if you're using an application that requires it, you'll be taken to the Desktop. You can also access the Desktop by clicking the Desktop tile in the Start screen. Here you'll find the recycling bin and other desktop items.

The Metro-style live tiles are rectangular blocks on the screen. They are colored according to the application they are associated with. You'll see tiles for the Control Panel, for Internet Explorer and for other commonly-used applications and programs. If you can't immediately see the application you want, you can access more tiles by scrolling across the screen.

Charms

A major innovation for Windows 8 is the introduction of what Microsoft is terming "Charms". Charms are accessed by moving the mouse to the right-hand margin of the screen; or, on a touchscreen device, by sweeping a finger from the right to the left. The Charms allow you to access important Windows functions.

One of the Charms lets you access the Start Screen; you can also bring this up by using the physical Windows 8 button or key. The Charms are contextual, offering different options depending on what application you are currently using when you access them. Other Charms include:

- Search, which lets you looks for programs, files and folders on your computer;

- Settings, which allows you to adjust settings such as the sound volume and monitor brightness, as well as tell your device when to hibernate and which battery power plan to use;

- Devices, which enables you to connect to and interact with other devices;

- Share, which facilitates the sharing of documents, images and other material.

The Share Charm is particularly interesting: accessed from within a social networking application, such as Facebook on a Web browser, Share can allow you to share a file using that application more easily. The Share Charm is one way in which Windows 8 emphasizes social applications, networking and interactivity over traditional computer use.

Search and Social

The Search menu is also accessible via the main Start Screen. A search box opens and you can find what you're looking for by typing a term into the box.

As with other Windows 8 functionality, the Search function is contextual: if you're currently using a word processing application such as Microsoft Word, for example, Search will attempt to find text documents. If you're currently browsing a social network, Windows 8's Search function makes it easy to find people by typing a name into the text field.

It's worth noting here that Windows 8 supports several widely-used social networking platforms natively, making them very easy to launch and use. These include Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin. The Windows 8 interface makes it simple to check for updates to all your social networking feeds.

Windows 8 represents a radical departure from traditional desktop computing. Some adopters may initially feel rather "at sea" with the new interface; however, user reports indicate that after a period of adjustment, it's reasonably easy to master.
