That was quick. You know how we were just telling you about insider speculation regarding Google’s own GPS Navigation application/software? An anonymous tipster helped us firm up those details. If you’ll remember, we unearthed the Motorola Droid specs on Motorola.com and found that included in Google Services was none other than Google Turn-By-Turn Directions:

We noticed Google Turn-By-Turn Directions but assumed this was just the current Google Maps Directions feature which provides an arrow button to see turns in-order. You know what they say… never make assumptions.

Our tipster says Google Turn-By-Turn Directions fulfill the prophecy of full blown GPS Navigation from Google. It is likely this will launch with the Motorola Droid and be included in all devices with Android 2.0 and beyond, accessed through and integrated with Google Maps for Android (and possibly/probably other platforms after Android).

My contact hasn’t seen Google Turn-By-Turn Directions in action but when asked how sure (s)he was it would launch with the Motorola Droid and be a complete, full blown GPS solution (s)he replied:

99.99999% sure.

Wowzers. At first the Motorola Droid announcement tomorrow was slated to be amazing because of the hardware. It looks like the software (Android 2.0) which HASN’T seen the same level of hype/leaks is going to create just as much excitement.

Until it’s made official you’ll have to consider it a Phandroid rumor… but we don’t have long to wait.

PS: I still prefer the name “Google Nav”

As promised then, I thought I would do a 5 day series of dub posts, offering up the live, one-take versions of tracks from my 45s selection for you to enjoy…

Please note: I should point out from the get-go here that these are versions - not remixes (in that I’m not adding any production, merely FX and whatnot), all delivered without any sequencers or means to correct errors. In this case, all tracks have been heard on Dang In Dub 4: Every Spoil Is A Style. However a fair few people have asked about these versions, so I thought the time was right to offer them up for people to use in their own mixes or whatever.

For the final day, I wanted to post this excellent chance-buy I picked up some time back; “So Jah Jah Say” by Junior Ross and the Spears. While this is a great track in itself, it is one of those that just seems to have the right amount of space in there to do great things on the mixing desk. Hence you get a load of flying delays, pause-outs, phasing and god knows what else going on in there, while all the time the rhythm section just grooves along.

Its tough to explain the beauty of dubbing live rather than in a sequencer. Its that “flying by the seat of your pants” feeling, knowing that one false move could potentially trash the whole take. However the flipside is that you sometimes have everything come together with your mind absolutely in the track, and the end result is a new version that is absolutely unique, on the basis you probably couldn’t repeat it in that exact form, even if you wanted to. To me, this track is an excellent example of that happening; all delays held, nothing went haywire and at the end of it I had a new version that was probably one of the best one-takes I’d ever done.

Day four’s dub is definitely the grimiest of the lot; a real ghetto production job on Gatherer’s “Words Of My Mouth”. Using this on the Dang In Dub mix was actually kinda hard, because the production is so damn dirty - even by roots reggae standards - that it stuck out like a sore thumb. Sonics aside though, this is a fine tune and that bassline is to die for when coupled with the drums. When I hear that “Let it shiiiiine” refrain come in, I still get goosebumps… just so much passion going on there. Just incredible.

Day three’s track comes courtesy of Knowledge, who I must admit I’d not heard of before taking a chance on this track. Luck must have been on my side, because some research into the group showed that this was in fact their standout cut. For this version, I spliced the vocal cut and the dub - and boy can you hear it, heheh. For some reason, on my 7″ the vocal cut is wayyy more murky than the dub, which is so much more clear you can barely believe it is the same session. Slight quality differences aside though, this version had to be done, as both the vocal and the dub stand out for different reasons. With vocals on, you have an incredibly catchy cut. With them left off and dub treatments added, the drums truly come into their own.

For day two, I’m offering up Brent Dowe’s mighty “Righteous Works”. Me and Wrongtom have both said before now that we often make our reggae purchases based on sight alone, and whilst I knew of Brent Dowe’s work with Lee Perry, I didn’t know how he’d fared since then. Spotting this 7″ though, I thought it could be promising - and sure enough, it was all that and then some… The treatments on this one were more subtle, mostly delays and the reverb you hear stabbing in and out in the background. I was keen not to over-do any versions, and while some tracks scream for masses of delays, FX, sirens, EQ and god knows what else, others just need subtle touches here and there. This is one of those - I hope you like it.

So, for day one we have a version I played on the radio show with Tom only the other day: Linval Thompson’s excellent “Tell Me”. This version is a real favourite of mine, more because it was one of those one-take moments where something pretty magical came out of it. The main alteration is on the EQing; the bass here is HUGE. The track itself splices together the vocal cut, moving across to the dub at the second utterance of “I am just like any other man…”. I actually fluffed the switchover, and the end result is that the dub kicks in a beat or two late. However the error just works somehow, and only reinforces the heaviness of the bassline if anything.

But enough talk - grab the track and enjoy…
