Having to make do really encourages one to be imaginative. For years I've had access to Photoshop/Flash and a myriad of advanced graphics tools and programs. I am currently limited to MS Office! However with Publisher/Paint, an army of geometric shapes and the transparency function you can still put together some reasonable graphic designs.

I’ve had synergy on mind for a week or so and I’ve really been getting into my Wii Fit. It’s great having a gadget that keeps an eye on you and records some useful basic details about you.

How could Nintendo take this concept further?

Nintendo FitWatch

Nintendo is increasingly using Hardware to sell their software, they typically do something we all take for granted but augment it with excellent, fun software. Now fitness watches/gadgets have been around for years, measuring heart rate, distance and speed etc.

Imagine adding some wireless communication to this device and then every morning when you do your Wii Fit weigh in, it uploads a little more data about you. You may be a little wobbly first thing, but the Watch tells Wii Fit that you did a 10 mile run yesterday. You may be, an ideal weight but your watch has noticed an increased heart rate and Wii Fit can advise you to seek some extra help.

It would be an excellent way of augmenting Wii Fit and would provide some very useful input from your activities away from your Wii.

Online Medical Records

Finally, with a whole host of medical tracking websites (including one by Google) on the way, how better than allowing an option to send your records, to these sites, perhaps to allow more detailed analysis, or just for a more permanent record. I feel this last idea would probably be beyond Nintendo’s desires as a Games company but it is worth a thought.

The following treats are just the tip of the iceberg but they unlock the functionality from the DS that pleases me the most so I am dedicating a nice informed post that should help you with some of the ‘Engrish‘ you’d normally encounter trying to get them onto your DS.

History/Background

Infantile Paralysiser - Crazy name, fantastic programmer and contributor to Nintendo Homebrew. My favourite bits of his include…

MoonShell Version 1.71 - A multimedia ‘Shell’ (A Shell is a bit like an Operating System). This plays MP3’s, videos on the DS (normally encoded as DPG files), pictures, text files and even other bits of homebrew. AFAIK my DSOne uses a modified version of this as it’s own Shell.

wifi VoiceChatClient Version 1.61 - A great bit of software, that lets you chat privately or in groups with other users of the program, for free over the Internet. Includes a multiplater drawing program to makes chats easier. Nintendo showcased something similar at E3 2005 but have never released it. Worked brilliantly on my old SupercardSD but doesn’t yet work on my DSOne :(.

Draw by DavR - Once my favourite Drawing program, now doesn’t save properly on my DSOne card. How Nintendo have passed up the opportunity to let people use their DS as a sketchpad is beyond belief.

New Favourite!

Colors - Amazing Drawing program for the DS. A very slick application that’s gives you the control and capabilities of a professional art program. Once you’ve finished your picture you can upload it automatically to a gallery on the Internet and you can play back the drawing process and watch your picture ‘draw itself’.
