Mobile Terminal Emulation – Best Practical Approach to Terminal Operation

There is an interesting contradiction between the industry’s idea of “best practice” when it comes to terminal emulation and the views of the consumer. According to a blog I just read, Windows terminal emulation (which basically makes your smartphone work with Windows capabilities) is best practice for work based terminal operation. According to the smartphone market, which roundly rejected Windows Phones as being outdated, clunky and annoying, a phone that works like Windows is the last thing anyone needs.

So who’s right? The terminal emulation geeks will tell you that having the Windows workflow module in a smartphone enables you to use it with more open applications and to do more stuff on it all at once – hence, presumably, making it a more rounded work tool and something more like a computer.

The practical minded corporate worker, on the other hand (that would be the one who didn’t buy a Windows Phone when it came out and isn’t buying them now either), will point out that a smart phone is not a device on which a person is supposed to work. You do work on computers, laptops and PCs. You use a smart phone for communication, for connecting with the office network and for facilitating work – but no one in their right mind would use a device the size of a TV remote controller in the same way they use their laptop.

A Windows terminal emulator on a PC is fine – it helps you use your computer in the Windows environment even when you’re not technically running Windows. That’s grand for offices that have more than one type of computer in their network – design companies and media companies, for example, which both use a lot of Apple technology in their workflow. But on a mobile device, unless it’s an iPad, I can’t really see the point.

I suppose if you were a business owner looking to spread the load on your database by having travelling employees fill in some spare train time by entering data on their mobile devices, you’d be one up by using Windows terminal emulation.

There is one clear benefit to the Windows terminal emulator for a mobile device – which is that it should enable you to access company databases from your phone in the same way that you would on a laptop connected to an extranet. The terminal emulator allows the system to plug into your phone as though it were a laptop – so if you’re a sales person or need some basic information in a hurry while you are out of the office, you can connect yourself into the net in that fashion.

Even then I am still not sure how much the use of a Windows terminal emulator on a smart phone would be worth the cost of licensing and installing the App. I suppose in time and cost terms, it costs less for a company to have its sales force directly access the database than to phone up the office and ask someone else to do it. The time spent by the sales person is probably about the same – calling someone up and having them read figures off a screen at you takes the same amount of time as tapping a screen and doing it yourself – but the time spent by the office employee is saved.

Where you do need to use a terminal emulator, Windows terminal emulators are considered best practice for the simple reason that they can be used on a very large number of systems. For consulting and net support purposes, a Windows terminal emulator means that you have around 80% of the available systems on the market there on your phone.

In fact it is in the area of network engineering and support that Windows terminal emulation comes into its own. Used as a handy diagnostic device, a mobile fitted with a Windows terminal emulator allows a technician to forestall problems quicker and often fix them onsite, rather than waiting for a return to base to sort the problem out.

Backup & Restore WordPress Blog/Website using cPanel

Creating regular backups of your WordPress Blog/Website is very essential as disaster may strike anytime. These disaster includes Phishing attacks, malware, SQL Injections etc.

Backups also comes very handy when you are moving your WordPress Blog/Website to some other Web Hosting Providing. Let’s check out in this post, how to Backup & Restore your whole WordPress Blog/Website using cPanel Full Backup feature?

Backup your WordPress Blog/Website using cPanel

4. Now on the next page, you need to create a Full Backup of your cPanel Account, instead of Partial Backup. Click on the Full Backup Hyperlink/Button and you will be redirected to the final step:

5. The final page will ask you the Backup Destination (Where you want to store the Backup?) and your Email Address. Select Home Directory from the Drop Down Menu and Enter your Email Address (if not already present by default):

Hit the Generate Backup Button and cPanel will start backing up your whole account. You will also get a Backup Confirmation Email, once the full backup has been completed. The completed backup file will be in .tar.gz format and will be present in your Home Directory. Either you can download your full cPanel backup to your Hard Drive OR you can Transfer it to a Remote Server

Restore your WordPress Blog/Website using generated cPanel Full Backup File

You can’t restore the generated Backup file (.tar.gz), until & unless you have full root access to the server. Full root access is generally provided to users who have VPS (Virtual Private Server) or Dedicated Server. If you are on shared hosting, than you need to ask your Web host to restore the backup and they will do this instantly.

If you are moving from one Web Host to another, just upload the Backup file to the Home Directory of your New cPanel Account and ask your Web host to restore the Backup for you.

How to Login Securely to your cPanel Account using HTTPS?

cPanel is one of the widely used and offered Control Panel for Shared, VPS (Virtual Private Severs) and Dedicated Web hosting Servers.

Logging in securely into cPanel (using HTTPS) will be an added advantage, as the transfers between the server and user computer will be fully encrypted. Let’s check out in this post How to Login Securely into cPanel using HTTPS (Secure Hypertext Transfer Protocol)?

Note: Almost all Web Hosting Providers make use of Dedicated/Shared SSL Certificates on their servers, so that the user can Login securely into their Web Hosting Control Panels (WHM, cPanel etc.). In case your Web Hosting provider has not installed a SSL certificate on your server, you can request/ask them to do so OR you may want to switch to some other popular Web Hosting Provider like HostGator

Login Securely into your cPanel Account using HTTPS:

Using Server IP Address

Your website is hosted on a Web Server which have an IP Address. This IP Address can be found either in the cPanel OR in the Welcome Email (which you got at the time of signing up) OR can be requested by opening a Support Ticket with your Web Hosting Provider.

You can use this IP Address to login securely to your cPanel Account. Here’s the URL you need to enter in your Browser:

https://YourSitesIPAddress:2083 E.g. https://208.43.230.554:2083

Using Server Name

Another way of logging in to your cPanel Account using HTTPS is by means of Server Name. The Server Name on which your Website is hosted can be found either in the cPanel itself OR in the Welcome Email (which you got at the time of signing up) OR can be requested by opening a Support Ticket with your Web Hosting Provider

You can use this Server Name to login securely to your cPanel Account. Here’s the URL you need to enter in your Browser:

https://ServerName:2083 OR https://SecureServerName:2083 E.g. https://gator1234.hostgator.com:2083

Either by using your Server IP Address or by using your Server Name, you can securely login to your cPanel Account using HTTPS, provided that your Web Hosting provider has already installed a Dedicated/Shared SSL on the server.

Additional Tip: Instead of logging in to your cPanel Account every time, if you prefer using Third Party FTP Clients for managing things in your account, than we highly recommend you to use WinSCP over other available FTP clients. For WinSCP, you need a secure port number for your Web Server which can be requested/asked from your Web Hosting Provider. For example, the secure port number for HostGator Shared Servers is 2222.
