Whether you’re fond of dressing on the side or like to stuff your turkey, we have two wonderful recipes that include both corn bread and Mrs Baird’s Bread. Our Old-fashion Corn Bread Dressing comes from one of our moms, who learned from her mother. They’ve been using Mrs Baird’s White Bread for three generations. We love the legacy of handing down recipes (and Mrs Baird’s) from generation to generation and hope you’ll enjoy this recipe as much as we have.

If you prefer wheat bread, you can use one of our soft wheats such as Mrs Baird’s Honey Wheat.

Our other recipe, Mrs Baird’s Corn Bread Stuffing, is courtesy of Mrs Baird’s fan Lori MacNeel. We think she must have a very large family for this much stuffing!

Saw a fun recipe for kids this morning.

Take two pieces of your favorite Mrs Baird’s bread, add 2 tbsp of apple sauce to a slice, then a few fresh fruit like raspberries or blueberries in the center of the sauce. Place the second piece of bread on top. Trim off the crust. Use a fork to close the edges together.

Brush lightly with canola oil and sprinkle a little cinnamon sugar. Bake in 350 oven for 10-15 minutes (length of time will probably depend on your oven).

Looked yummy. Think we’ll give it a try. Let us know if you do and what fruit you add.

It was a tough decision that had the judges wanting to award more than just two winners, yet it came down to something sweet and something savory for the two winning recipes of our Mrs Baird’s® Grillin’ Thins™ Recipe Contest.

Angelique Moore’s Tasty Tropical Thins was a perfect recipe for the Grillin’ Thins. We loved the grilled pineapple and the red pepper flakes added enough of that extra touch that took it from just another sandwich to one with a little zip! Get recipe!

We were all pleasantly surprised when the other winning recipe was a sweet treat. Easy and very tasty, Vanessa Washington’s Apple Oven Grillin’ Thins was a huge hit. If you love apple pie with cheddar cheese, you’ll love this recipe with a scoop of no-sugar-added vanilla ice cream. Get recipe!

It was actually tough to pick just two winners. We had six recipes in our final taste test and they were all very good. So we wanted to acknowledge the four semi-finalists for their efforts:

Donna Hill – Grilled Margherita Sandwich Supreme
Rey Avila – Texas Burger
Shirley Quinn – Apricot Chicken Salad
Allie Van Wagoner – Meaty Brown Sugar Sloppy Joes

All recipes will be added to our Mrs Baird’s recipe section.

Preheat oven to 450F
8 Roma tomoatoes, cut in half lengthwise, salt & olive oil
2/3 cup of breadcrumbs, recipe below

Breadcrumbs:

4 slices of your favorite Mrs Baird’s wheat bread (we used the 100% Whole Wheat)
3 tbsp fresh minced flat leaf parsley
2 garlic cloves
2 tsp fresh oregano (or 1 tsp dried)
3 tbsp freshly grated Parmesan cheese

Pulse the bread in your food processor to make coarse crumbs. Set aside. Pulse the parsley, garlic and oregano (if fresh) until minced. Add all the ingredients together – bread, parsley, garlic, oregano and parmesan – and mix well.

Slice the tomatoes in half lengthwise and lay them in a roasting pan or on a foil lined baking sheet. Drizzle liberally with olive oil and sprinkle with sea salt, kosher salt or just salt (for Diabetics, lose the salt entirely). Spoon some of the prepared garlic breadcrumbs on top of each tomato and pat down with your hands.

Roast the tomatoes in a 450F oven for 20-25 minutes until they are bubbly and golden on top (mine got a bit brown on top so watch them after 20 minutes).

To serve, you can let them cool slightly then peel off the skins or if the skins don’t bother you, leave them on and serve as is. They make a flavorful and colorful addition to any meal.

As summer approaches many of us place renewed attention on eating healthier and losing weight. An easy idea for accomplishing these goals is adding whole wheat bread to your diet. Along with its hearty flavor great for sandwiches, here are a few delicious ways to add some whole grain goodness to your everyday:

Healthy Start

Healthy whole wheat bread definitely has a place at the breakfast table. Try some toasted with peanut butter for an easy choice if you don’t have a lot of time. Add banana slices for a well-rounded breakfast. If you prefer something a bit sweeter, think about the “just fruit” version of preserves or a flavored cream cheese. Remember moderation when adding spreads or other toppings!

Top Your Salad

How about homemade croutons made with whole wheat bread? Avoid the heavy oil when making them and opt for a drizzle of olive oil with a seasoning of oregano or fresh pepper (limit the salt). This is an excellent way to add a “healthy” and flavorful crunch to your salad for lunch.

And For Dessert…

Whole wheat bread can even sneak into your dinner menu by making it into bread pudding. Here’s a great low calorie bread pudding recipe that you can use. Top it with some low fat ice cream and your meal comes to a perfect end.

There are many easy ways to add whole wheat bread into any meal of the day. Experiment with it – you’ll come up with more delicious ideas to make it part of your daily diet. Who knows, it may be a great way to build healthier eating habits with the kids!

Mrs Baird’s® Bread has been a part of families’ lives since 1908. But have you ever wondered how such a delicious and wholesome loaf of bread is made? If so, we would love to invite you and your family to come tour one of our bakeries and see for yourself just how we make many favorites, like Mrs Baird’s nutritious wheat breads.

Bakery tours are a great way for home school moms, organizations and teachers to provide a FREE, fun and educational field trip. The smell of fresh-baked bread can’t be beat and it’s a wonderful learning opportunity for the kids to see a bakery in action, not to mention a nostalgic trip down memory lane for many of those who were raised on Mrs Baird’s Bread, and toured the facilities as children.

Fun For The Whole Family
Kids and adults will be fascinated by the large machines and equipment that we use to make bread. You’ll watch the process of the ingredients being mixed into a giant dough (we’re talking 1,500 lb. batches!). Then into the oven and finally to the packaging as the fresh baked bread leaves for the store shelves. We bake over 3 million loaves of bread a week…seriously that takes a lot of wheat! You’ll see Mrs Baird’s doesn’t take short cuts, as it takes 6 hours, from start to finish, to bake a loaf of bread!

Here’s what everyone loves … At the end of the tour, we offer you a warm slice of fresh bread right out of the oven! Now that is YUMMY!

How To Set Up A Tour
If you would like to come and see for yourself how your favorite bread is made, fill out our online form and contact the bakery 2-3 weeks in advance to schedule your tour. Children 6 years of age and older are welcome to go on this fun bakery adventure tour.

If you’re bringing a group, please make sure there is at least one adult (18 years or older) for every 10 children on the tour. In order to stay safe, we ask that you make sure your legs are covered, and to not wear any open toed or open heel shoes. If the weather is hot, taking a tour in the morning is more comfortable than in the afternoon.

So plan some time to come visit Mrs Baird’s. We certainly look forward to meeting you.
