I was working for a federal government agency and my wife a nurse. Through the years we stayed loyal to our career and to each other, moving houses more often than our jobs and setting up family for 3 young children who are themselves now married and with kids of their own, or soon to have. Looking back it has been a marriage of building a future and today, 39 years later, I thank God we did build one that we have absolutely no complain. In fact we feel we have so much more than many couples like us. To suggest that our marriage is blissfully perfect is not telling the truth. We learn to accept the good and the not so good. I believe a good marriage is one that deals with reality rather than fantasy or fairy tales. As we head towards our 40th anniversary we feel energized by the grandchildren around us and who visit us as well as the one we will see soon.

We had a simple celebration, a dinner in town last night (our caterer resumed delivering food today after a long Chinese New Year break). Nothing elaborate for that is my wife's preference. What pleases us most is the well-being and happiness of our children and grandchildren and that I admit has been a God-given blessing all these years. Happy anniversary, Mama, and many more to come, wishing you good health and happiness everyday.

He likes driving to nowhere and stopping at small towns to check out the popular food they sell. I jokingly asked him to check out Gebeng for me. He asked, "Gebeng what?" Obviously he wasn't following the news or he did only when I mentioned Lynas did the two names connect. I said I'd like to know if Gebeng is polluted with radioactive waste. Of course it was a joke. Lynas hasn't even started operating, but if the temporary operating licence issued by the Atomic Energy Licensing Authority is not revoked, residents, businesses and visitors to Gebeng will become involved in what may be the country's most lethal zone insofar as industrial pollution is concerned, and nobody is able to say with any confidence, backed by authoritative knowledge, that what Lynas brings to Gebeng is only employment opportunities.

I googled Gebeng to know where this famous location is. It is on the east coast of peninsular Malaysia north of Kuantan some 45 minutes drive or 60km away. Now to the south of Kuantan some 120km away is the Pekan town. Malaysians who are politically conscious will know that Pekan is the parliamentary constituency of the prime minister Najib Razak. He ought to be aware of trouble brewing in his backyard and his home state, Pahang. About 60km north of Gebeng is the very popular tourist destination, Cherating Club Med. I am not about to be a scaremonger but people must be aware how very close this hot potato is to the places I mentioned. I am puzzled why factory owners in Gebeng, especially those foreign owned, are keeping quiet over their new neighbor, or they did but wasn't publicised. I am also puzzled why residents nearby didn't exercise their anxieties via peaceful protests. I am surprised why hotel operators are sitting oblivious to the potential harm Lynas can do to its industry. Perhaps everybody is waiting for trouble to take place before acting.

Many of us remember Chernobyl, Bhopal, Three Mile Island and recently Fukushima where spillage and leakage of nuclear radioactive wastes create contamination of food, caused deformities in foetus, early death and sharp rise in cancers. It is no surprise that such news have created anxieties and fueled opposition to any construction of plants that involves processing or creation of radioactive materials. While Gebeng may be a much smaller risk but it still pose risks nonetheless. Should Lynas be allowed to operate as licensed several spillover effects may occur, among them:

1. Residents moving out of Gebeng and its vicinity
2. Tourism will be affected
3. Disruption of economic activities
4. Property devaluation

It is unwise to push through approving the Lynas operation. The government may have to pay a penalty for revoking the permit but doing so save Gebeng and the nation. Lynas is a grave mistake the government made, possibly out of greed.

Over the past 15 days the moon had grown to its fullness tonight making it a romantic sight to behold especially if it is a clear and cloudless sky packed with an array of stars to dance before our eyes. The past weeks have been rainy in the late afternoon but last night the moon came out to display her soft glow. I hope tonight the weather will be kind for us to gaze upward, enjoy the 'night sun' and say goodbye to the celebration. Today happens to be a public holiday too, so many families are reunited. I hope there will be fun, laughter, embraces, clapping and remembrance. Most of all I hope we can be thankful that times are still good for many of us, but to remember and help the needy in our midst.

CGM also signify time to go back to serious work, to earn hard money and improve the livelihood of those at home. For about a week before the new year the Chinese businesses will try to sau kung or literally pack up before the new year begins. Building contractors will stop work. The only Chinese businesses roaring into the new year are those selling gift hampers, barbequeing pork and yes, dancing into businesses and homes with their lion dance troops which now has teens from other races as well. Salaries and bonuses are normally paid early so that workers can buy food, new clothings, shoes, presents and set aside new notes to be given to young children and parents as a sign of prosperity and wish for a great year ahead. The Chinese treasures goodwill and will try to close off all debts so that the new year will start on a clean slate. But it is also inauspicious to ask for money so usually the debtors will do their best not to roll over old debts into the new year as it may bring bad luck. It is a perception but a healthy habit to start a new year clean.

So what is this tradition of casting tangerine into the lake by single ladies? It is held that by doing so and making a wish they will find suitable partners to marry. This tradition is popular in Penang with a majority Hokkien community and tonight the Esplanade will be the place to be to look out for the presence of a group of pretty girls doing their thing. Some may even go further out to sea in sampans and boats. Whoever thought this out must be an ingenious Hokkien businessman. This is a great tradition to consume surplus tangerine otherwise they will rot. Already many are getting sick of eating them. This year I ate alot, every day I will peel and eat at least one and the fruit is generally sweet with little or no spoilage. Some people advise against over eating as the fruit is 'heaty' and develop coughs.

Tonight the sight of young girls writing secret messages on the skin and throwing the orange into the water is something tourists will enjoy watching as this tradition is unique to the Hokkien Chinese. Even the locals enjoy it including those from other dialect groups and other races. If you are in such a place tonight, especially in Penang and Singapore, you will be witnessing a truly multicultural tolerant society. And today the lion dance troops will come out in full force to drum, clang and prance their way into the hearts of the celebrants and spectators of the unique and rich culture the Chinese offer the world. I am quite sure the various Chinatowns in UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand and elsewhere will be celebrating too. Once again, Kong Xi Fa Cai, until next year.

He was of course just naughty, like when we were in school and no one, not the least Jimmy took offense. Jimmy wasn't huge, just that his stoutness gave a wrong horizontal impression. Titus, Jimmy, myself and another guy, KH, were classmates in 1965 and when we left school we were like sparkles that splintered our own ways. As our careers ended we look forward to reconnect so today we did, in Kajang. My wife and I arrived early, at the Prescott Metro Inn's Muar Coffee House, the venue suggested by Titus who got lost and arrived last. He blamed it on the new traffic so I suggested a GPS. It isn't flawless but at least it gets you to your destination somehow. I can be forcefully direct with Titus because we were classmates and that is a special privilege. Titus who was reticent when we first met him at the November 2010 reunion is a lot more sociable and open now and that is a good thing. Perhaps he prefer smaller groups.

Jimmy migrated to Canada in 1990 and became citizen 10 years later. From his story it sounded like moving down another block whereas to me migration is a life long decision process as important as getting married, but the way Jimmy explained, it was just pack up and go. Perhaps his outlook explains why he spots a jovial look and packs an infectious laughter. Except for some recession his hair is as dark as night. Unfortunately his wife didn't come along but my wife made herself part of the gang although she didn't belong except to be a gracious companion to me. Thanks WH.

Over a drink at the coffee house we chatted for an hour before moving to a popular satey (barbequed chicken/beef) joint 3 minutes walking distance for our lunch and was glued to our chairs for 2 hours. Conversation was light and easy flowing, there were many things to share. Soon it was time to say goodbye, 3 hours to make up for 45 lost years. I've put out feelers to gauge reactions for a 50th anniversary class reunion in 2015. Nearly half the class responded in the positive, and I await the rest to open their mailboxes or to be contacted. As usual some will need a little push or persuasion.

Here are a few pictures for remembrance.

Why would any citizen be unaffected or be indifferent? Again it is going to dig into their pockets because like in the UK or USA where such schemes are already in place every living soul MUST purchase medical insurance to receive medical care, failing which they will either be denied treatment, no matter how critical or urgent the situation is, or relegated to low priority unless these patients have privileged connection to powerful or authoritative figures. If you have watched the movie John Q starring Denzel Washington you know how an explosive situation can blow up when you feel your rights to healthcare especially when a loved one is critically ill is denied because you have no medical insurance. You can see it as discrimination but an emotional person can take drastic actions like take hostages to get attention and service. Will such a scenario occur in Malaysia?

We are heading towards public disenchantment that cuts across the board. Employers beware. You too will be made to pay for your workers and executives medical insurance, and those already doing so may have to revise the policies to comply with the new requirements of 1Care. Self-employed people must now buy new coverages which may be tied to age groups, the older you are the higher the premium. This information is still hidden from public knowledge. Pensioners and retirees who receive free or cheap medical treatments from government hospitals and clinics must now be insured, if not by themselves, by their sponsors, children or relatives. Sickly people and those living near to or below the margin of poverty will be hardest hit, and they include their families who pay their medical bills which will be higher than for an averagely healthy person. The despair will be great. What happens to the People First Performance Now sloganeering of the Najib 3 year old administration? What's happening appear more like People Last Profit First.

If the basic rights to basic healthcare without financial burden are denied then other forms of finding treatments will emerge, which may include off duty consultation off the record. Family, patients, care providers and professionals, can get really creative to overcome the uninsured cases. A new undercover scheme will emerge bypassing the government scheme. Whether it is food or healthcare, when people are forced into a corner they will look for, and always find alternative solutions to have themselves and their families fed and treated. You can say it is unethical, unprofessional or even immoral but when it comes to surviving a system that is out to get you, many people who cannot afford don't really care.

There is still hope the lawmakers will feel the pain of their constituents to throw the bill back to the government for a revamp. Don't let 1Care destroy the spirit of a caring Malaysia we know since independence.

It is a well known knowledge that the biggest borrower of EPF funds is the Malaysian government because it is cheap. The EPF does not declare good dividends simply because it is not getting good borrowing interests from the government which always look upon this as a convenient backup cheap domestic financier of its projects. It somehow controls the EPF board on how their funds are to be invested, in the local stock exchange, to the government or in foreign equities. Both the EPF and Petronas are the largest source of funds that the government can tap into for its mega projects which are often trumpeted as for the well being of the people.

THIS latest fiasco is again going to blow up against the government, this time touching the raw nerves of savers in the EPF which they are required to do so by law. Currently some 25% of a contributor's salary inclusive of his employer's portion must be remitted into his EPF account which he can only withdraw partially upon reaching his 50th birthday and the rest upon his retirement. That money is like a pot of gold a contributor anxiously await to seize control. The government has 'forced' the EPF to set aside RM1.5 billion to lend to borrowers that commercial banks have rejected for various reasons, chiefly either absence of collateral or guarantor or the property is not in their list of approved projects.

Reading the response from the prime minister to allay public concerns I feel his reply is over-simplistic and lacks understanding of the worries these contributors face. In the first place it is no business of EPF to be a financier. Its main role is to be an investor so the RM1.5 billion housing loan project is wrong. I don't know if the EPF made the independent decision or was forced into it. It appear to be the latter and that the EPF is beholden more to the government than protect the interest of the contributors. As members they have statutory rights to know and approve how their savings are being invested. This is currently not happening as there is no empowerment given to them via a group. The EPF cannot be a social organization which it is not. It was not established to be one. It is a purpose driven fund manager and its clients are all the Malaysians who by law have to contribute to the EPF fund. The big question is whether the EPF Board have erred in investing RM1.5 billion not to a few major borrowers of credible track records but become a lender to thousands of Malaysians (and possibly some foreigners as well) of dubious credit standing. I am not against helping the poor but it must come from the government, through a social well-being project and using budgets approved by the Parliament and certainly not hijacking private savings in the EPF to which the government must not have any say to dictate the way it is to be invested.

Malaysians who have borrowed from the government have been notorious in NOT paying back the loans, chief among them students who took loans to further their studies, others who took micro credits to start small businesses, fail and disappeared. Their thinking must be the government is loaded so can afford to write off such defaulting loans or the government is lax or worst, the government is racially biased. To the public the defaults cost the government to write off hundreds of millions of ringgit which eventually can be said to belong to the taxpayers since the government owns no money except those they receive through taxes and royalties. Federal Territory and Urban Well-Being Minister assured that the government is the guarantor of any defaulting loans so the EPF is protected. But whose money will be used to cover such defaults? You already know I'm sure. Imagine the likely scenario:

'A' borrows RM50,000 to buy a house using the EPF loan. He pays RM5,000 and defaulted the rest. The government guarantees EPF the RM45,000 owed by 'A'. What does this suggest to 'A'? Default lah! The government has guaranteed to repay his outstanding loan. So far no one has gone to jail for not settling a government loan.

Next the PM was quoted as saying, 'If a buyer is unable to or does not repay the loan, the unit can be sold for a higher price. We always safeguard the interests of the EPF'.

If this is indeed true then I suggest the PM talk to his banker brother Dato Seri Nazir Razak. Any one who knows how a bank works know that when a housing loan is defaulted the bank puts up the property for auction. The interest is to recover the bank's outstanding loan from the borrower, NOT to auction at the highest or market price of the property. Furthermore bidders always look for a bargain so how to get the highest or real market price? The PM must be dreaming or pulling a fast one. Even if the property market is inflationary it will be mostly to those in the high end sector like the commercial buildings and condominiums, not those medium to low cost houses which is the contentious issue now which can blow over into an unfavorable reaction at the upcoming election. In Malaysia, people are very money sensitive, especially THEIR money.

Below are samples of what I picked up from some commentors to the above issue, and they are obviously very, very unhappy and infuriated:

DON'T TOUCH MY (EPF) MONEY...if you do...I will show you how I vote in the coming GE. Layoff man...or you gonna get it.

If they can't afford to buy a house, they should just continue renting! No shame in that. This scheme is a disaster waiting to happen -- putting a financial burden on those who simply cannot afford! DBKL can't event collect rent -- let alone collect a loan!

EPF money does not belong to the government but to the rakyat. Ministers and their croonies may not required the EPF money as they are "rich" but the poor rakyat depend on their EPF after they retire, therefore, please leave the EPF money alone! I thought by listing Felda, its going to generate millions if not billion, then why not use this money??? What happen to the increase tax collected over the years??? LEAVE MY EPF MONEY ALONE!!!!!!

Leave EPF money alone. If this loan is so secured, get a financial institution to fund it then.

This is outrageous. How can this be allowed? EPF funds don't belong to the government but to contributors.

If you really want to help people then why not use government's own money? Why ask EPF to fund it?

Update February 4: THIS report from the Opposition's reaction is very well echoed. I admire the depth and honesty of the arguments presented in comparison to the lame excuses given by our top executive.

There are maybe just 50% grass and the rest weeds and bare soil, all because of poor maintenance and invasion by weeds from my neighbors who did not maintain their gardens as well. It is discouraging to try to restore my garden to its earlier prime but this perception changed when my adjacent neighbor, who bought over the property last year, decided to build a mid height wall (at my request) to prevent creepers from overhanging over to my side of the property. This barrier will help stop or minimize crossover of weeds into my garden. With this in mind I become more optimistic that I can get back my old garden which I seriously think needed a total makeover. I was thinking of stripping all the grass and top soil down to perhaps 6" and then replace it with new layers of sand and free-draining topsoil before putting on turfs of pre-grown pure cow grass. I was willing to spend the money.

I contacted a landscape contractor specializing in laying lawn grass. Upon sighting my garden, his immediate comment was, 'why do you want to change?' My immediate thought was, 'huh? don't you want my business?' As it turns out he was more of trying to help than make easy money out of me which I appreciated very much (he had driven 25km from his nursery to my house to inspect the garden and gave me his free opinion). He gave me this precious advice:

Your old garden can be restored if you will spend time and effort to apply fertilizer fortnightly and trim the grass weekly to blunt and eliminate most of the weeds.

I used to mow my own lawn until 7 years ago when problem from my back gave me the excuse to stop and depend on contractor gardeners to cut the grass once a month or so. I still do but the service does not include maintenance. You can say that I did not love my garden all these years, and my late dog used to defecate in it, making me dislike working on it even more. Now I have no excuse, plus my back is not as bad as before. And it will be good exercise too.

This afternoon I went mower hunting and taking into consideration my age, the size of my garden and that I still need to care for my garden for at least 5 more years, I need a machine that is lightweight, comes with a catcher, cut close to the ground and to the edge, and of low maintenance. Well I found my answer in the Bosch Rotak 40 electric rotary lawn mower, a very sensible design and easy to operate, even a lady can do it since it take pressing a button to start the motor instead of yanking the starter cord. I am pleased with its quality as it is UK made. I even bought a 25kg bag of lawn fertilizer at the same outing. I am ready to rebuild my old garden to its pristine beauty, I hope.

I've already google calendered this entry: mow and fertilize lawn on Friday, February 3. That means tomorrow. It will be alternated by just mowing without fertilizing the following week. I hope that by the 3rd month I will begin to see the cow grass re-establish control of the turf and regain at least 90% of the area. With my grandchildren very outdoorish, especially Andrew, I think I owe it to them to have a safe garden to play in.

The painful issue is of course HEALTHCARE and the government now plans to introduce a new scheme called 1Care. Notice how unimaginative the government has become or how boring, every scheme it started in the last 2 years or so have bandwagoned on the 1Malaysia concept. 1 this 1 that. THIS report shows how frustrated and helpless we are becoming in the light of a new plan to increase the cost of healthcare.

Days ago I received the below report. I don't know how accurate it explains the scheme but the main concern is cost and service. The public must have access to public forums to understand the impact this scheme have on them. Healthcare has long being the domain of welfare services by the government but slowly but surely it has become commercialized until it shows that the government really does not care about the well being of the average Malaysian. My questions are: must we have to take this path to buy medical insurance to have our illnesses treated? Must we put a burden on those who are less healthy and therefore require more frequent visits to the doctors especially specialists? Do we need to change the model we are presently using? Isn't there a better way? The government must not rush into legislating this into an Act. The biggest losers will be the poor and average income families as well as those who are prone to get sick. Have a heart.

Salient points – 1Care

1. The government plans to introduce a new healthcare system called 1Care. It includes an insurance system to fund for healthcare.

2. The National Healthcare Financing Authority will be in charge of 1Care – and it is likely to be turned into a GLC.

3. Based on available information, every household will be made to pay up to 9.4% of gross household income for social health insurance. The payers will be the individual, the employer and the government via taxes, exact proportion still being worked out.

4. There shall be no choice. Everyone has to pay. There is no opting out. We have to pay upfront. It will no longer be fee-for-service; it is fee-before-service.

5. There has been no information on exactly how this payment will have to be made or how the government will collect from self-employed people.

6. The government will be expected to contribute to the insurance premiums of government pensioners, civil servants and five dependants.

7. But the problem is: 1Care does not cover all your medical expenses. Only for a prescribed basic list of what “you can have” healthcare items. Anything more than basic you will have to pay your own.

8. Your long-serving independent family doctor will have to join the system or will not be allowed to see you under the 1Care scheme. The robust, cost-effective independent clinics serving the country will be replaced by 1Care clinics.

9. You cannot pick your own doctor. 1Care will allocate a doctor to you.

10. If you want to see a doctor of your choice, you’ll need to pay for that from your own pocket. Your allocated doctor will decide when and which specialist you can see if the need arises (a process called gate-keeping).

11. The NHFA will pay GPs RM60 (present proposal) for each patient as consultation fees. It does not include medicine. Compare this with presently, for cough and cold visit, the GP would charge RM20-RM30 for consultation and medicine. With 1Care: consultation for GP visit is RM60 and this does not include medicine.

12. You cannot see your doctor as and when you feel the need arises. There will be a rationing system in place as well. There will also be rationing for specialist care with the GP as the gate-keeper. Likewise if you wish to see the specialist of your choice or go to a hospital of your choice, unless referred by your allocated doctor, you will also have to pay out of your pocket.

13. Even if you only see the doctor once in a year, you will not get a refund from 1Care. Your medical costs are prepaid in advance irrespective of whether you become sick or not. You are also expected to make an additional co-payment for your visit. This is to discourage you from seeing doctors too often.

14. You will be prescribed only medicines from a standardised list of not-the-original medicines in keeping with WHO List of essential medications. This will save cost for 1Care and maximise profit for the insurance companies. Insurance companies will have major say in the price and the range of this standardized medicine list. It will likely to be the cheapest medicine.

15. The doctor will only give you injections. You’ll need to get all other medicines from a pharmacist, even if it means hauling three sick children with high fever along a hot, dusty busy street looking for the nearest pharmacy.

16. If you do not like what is given to you, you can get alternative care by paying out of your own pocket.

The Big Picture

Each year, we all pay a total of RM44.24 billion a year for healthcare – now called National Healthcare Hospitals and clinics (an integration of public hospitals and clinics, private hospitals and private GPs. which in essence is a privatisation of public and nationalisation of private healthcare facilities)

All this will now go under 1Care.

This means 1Care will get almost RM45 billion a year.

The administrative cost is likely to be 10% or about RM 4.5 billion

The Poor

Who will then care for the poor and the marginalised population when the private and public healthcare corporatize and turned into independent commercial entities each competing with the other for business and profits?

Public hospitals and clinics are service-driven will become corporatize/privatise and have to be profit-driven

So who will serve the people in remote places?

Who will serve the very poor people?

Situations

What happens when the government introduces 1Care?

The whole system of independent one-stop GPs will be restructured and converted into 1Care clinics like the UK NHS general practitioner system.

Before:

Ali has always having skin rashes for many years. He has to see his doctor once a month to get treatment. That would mean he will have to see his doctor 12 times a year just for this illness. What if he has other illnesses?

Now:

But now, Ali’s doctor has allocated only a budget equivalent to six visits a year. Regardless of how many time Ali would need for his yearly treatment. What happens then? A rationing system will kick in. If the doctor sees Ali too many time, his “P4P” (Pay for Performance) profile will be poor and he will be paid less.

To start with, Ali will probably cannot just walk in and expect to be treated. He will have to make an appointment. There will be a long waiting list. What if Ali needs to be treated for fever or some painful joints? He will also have to wait for his appointment. If he cannot wait and wants immediate treatment from another doctor he will have to pay on his own. This is what the NHS UK system is offering its patients.

Lim has an appointment to see his doctor over a knee ache. Just before his appointment, he has an ingrown toe nail that has become painful. At the clinic, after his doctor treats him for his knee ache, he asks his doctor if he could look into his ingrown nail. His doctor says “No, the system does not allow me to do that. You must make another appointment. This visit I can only treat and bill for your knee ache. 1Care will accuse me of over-servicing my patients. I have no discretion here, all is by SOPs” This is what the NHS UK system is like today.

Mutu lives in a remote rubber estate. One day he had chest pain and went to the nearby 1Care clinic. He has blood pressure problems since young and has had fits. A hospital assistant saw him. Because of a change of his medications to the cheapest not-the-original medications, his blood pressure went out of control and his seizures returned. He developed a fatal stroke and died This is already what is happening when essential original medications are replaced with the cheapest .The cheapest medications is not necessarily the best for the patient and certainly not the safest.
Read HERE.

The extraction of rare earths are used for THESE applications. The company boasts of zero harm and sustainable development but no where in the website did it address the concerns of people living nearby its processing plants of potential health hazards caused by leakages of radioactive wastes such as thorium. Read THIS counter view from a watch group.

Lately Lynas Malaysia has come up with a daily notice in the newspaper again boasting of its clean health and safety standards but concerned citizens and non-governmental organizations as well as opposition parties continue to ride on the fear factor should this largest extraction plant in the world begins operation by June this year. And riding on protests and the need to earn back public favors the government has entrusted upon the Atomic Energy Licensing Board to further tighten the terms of compliance which explain the delay in commissioning the plant from September last year.

This tagline sums it up nicely:

Malaysia is littered with ventures where profits are privatized and losses are socialized. If the people of Malaysia are not vigilant, the Lynas plant may very well turn out to be the next radiation disaster.

Although I don't live anywhere near to Gebeng I feel the anxieties of the people there as well as those living or working along the routes such rare earth by products will take by trucks. Spillages can cause widespread hazards that cannot be easily contained. Dust pollution is another reason those in the outskirt also need to worry. Again this is one foreign investment project that the government should have rejected outright from day one when its application landed on its table. No one know, until it is dug out years later, if the approval is laced with some sweetener. It is again a project that goes against public interest which the government ought to ask why did Lynas decided to come to Malaysia instead of processing its goods in Australia itself, or did it investigated if Lynas applied elsewhere and was rejected?

I think Mr. Curtis, Lynas Corp chairman, threat and insinuation that Malaysia will lose out in foreign investment is unjust and unfounded. Any foreign investor will look at the host country's standard of public healthcare to decide if it will be favorable received. Also if the investment is entirely for monetary reason or does it help boost national development through skills transfer besides job creation. If the government doesn't care for its people then what make these investors believe that it will care for them in the long term? A good investor enters a host nation on a partnership to bring benefits for both itself and the locals. A company that is socially responsible should not operate anywhere near residential communities especially where it deals with hazardous products and by products. I wonder why Lynas did not operate on an isolated island instead but of all places choose Malaysia. To the people in and around Gebeng, it seems like they have been bombed by a timeless threat and they can do nothing about it unless a strong political will arise to dismantle the plant and shift it out. If this doesn't get the voters there to vote for the Opposition I don't know what will.

If I had taken the NSE I would exit either Bidor or Sungkai toll and exposed myself to the trap along the Tanjong Malim to Rawang stretch. My alternative was to take the coastal roads to Sungei Besar, Sekinchan, Tanjong Karang, Kuala Selangor and Klang from where I would take the Federal Highway to my PJ destination. I depended on my GPS to lead the way as I hardly use the coastal roads at all.

Past Kuala Selangor, at Bukit Rotan, a signage said to Shah Alam using the LATAR Expressway (which links Kuala Selangor to Kuala Lumpur). Shah Alam is between Klang and Petaling Jaya so would be a good via point to head to. Furthermore I've never used LATAR and made the spot decision to miss Klang to use LATAR instead. It was a good decision as I found LATAR smooth driving and I paid only RM4 toll all together (I stand corrected as I was concentrating on whether I made the right choice). My only concern was linking up LATAR to wherever it leads me to to take me to PJ. I saw signboards that pointed to Rawang, Sungei Buloh and Gombak and I was worried I might be taken into Kuala Lumpur city instead of bypassing it south to PJ. Following my GPS faithfully I suddenly discovered myself merging into a heavy traffic flow along a highway my wife quickly identified as the NSE. Now I must admit my sense of direction is poor and it took me a few minutes to recognize the scenery as those before the Sungei Buloh Rest Area with the overhead bridge where we often stop over for early Burger King lunch whenever we travel north to either Sitiawan or Ipoh. From there on I got my bearing right.

The trip took me longer as it involved driving on trunk roads mostly but it saved me on toll, as well as on distance. So on the whole I benefited, especially from not encountering any traffic jam. The anticipated construction of the West Coast Expressway or WCE will certainly make driving much smoother and faster, dispersing traffic to it from the NSE so travelers will encounter less likelihood of congestion especially during festival traveling. When the WCE is completed I would link directly to it from Sitiawan and bypass Sungei Besar, Sekinchan, Tanjong Karang and Kuala Selangor. It will be an entirely highway drive to Banting where I am sure later on another coastal highway will be built to link it southward to Port Dickson and Melaka. Also noteworthy is Banting is only about 30km from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport. I am sure motorists welcome the new highway but the recent announcement HERE and the reactions HERE and HERE make concerned citizens worried that the terms of concession are again lopsided to the disadvantage of the highway users. Whose interest are the government looking after? The concessionaire's or the road users? Are the terms unreasonable to the users? Are there hidden factors we don't know of that need to be exposed and discussed publicly? I am not against profit making but since the days when former PM Mahathir decided to privatize several public utility projects like road constructions, electricity and water supplies and telecommunication service, Malaysians had suffered into paying more than if they were managed by the government instead. Privatization absolved the government from actually operating and providing these essential services to business entities from whom they collect taxes and other form of income (I leave that to your imagination) which such businesses must find creative ways to make provision for. In the process the 'victims' are the people in general due to the high costs of using the services (former Works Minister Samy Velu I remember said we should not complain of paying toll as it gave us convenience and a faster, and shorter, traveling time to our destinations). I would think it should be any good government's responsibility to raise the people's standard of living by saving time and expenses.

The awarding of building and operating WCE to a company without a track record smells like a scandal brewing, a little like the National Feedlot Centre which is smack in a public outcry for mismanaging the funds loaned by the government. The NFC too has no track record of running a cattle business. My question is this. Why is the government blundering again and again into such nefarious practices openly and exposing itself to further criticism? Why didn't it tender out this multi-billion ringgit project? It is becoming fodder for the Opposition as election is just months away.

After weeks of waiting the day finally arrives when I can say to Andrew, Happy Birthday Andrew, you are finally two. The reason for my impatience is because for the past 2 months I've watched him developed both physically and mentally that I couldn't believe that he was still a baby. But look at the above picture you will think that he is older than his biological age. He is learning to piece together a simple sentence, using my iPad with deftness of a 5 year old, and socializing with children much older than him. While still a mischievous little fella, he is adorably so. As I write this Andrew is with his father, giving me the peace to write this piece, otherwise he will be all over me. Andrew, we all love you very much for the joy, and sometimes exasperation you gave us with an innocent smirk on your face.

I had equivalent of a front seat view and hear the rockets shrieking into the clear skies before exploding into sparkling stars of red, blue, green, yellow and purple. Indeed it was a rare sight. Even the locals said to me this has been the most spectacular show put up spontaneously by some residents ushering in the dragons of the new year. As if on cue, soundless but gentle, tiny kong ming lanterns floated gracefully up and in the directions of the gentle night breeze. I count at least 30 of them. I wonder if law enforcement has slackened since such lanterns can endanger low flying aircrafts. Or perhaps the police were busy looking elsewhere, or on leave. Well, it is the Chinese New Year, and I personally feel releasing such devices should be conditionally allowed.

By 12.15am the intensity and frequency of display as well as blasts from firecrackers had diminished. The only other sound that filled the smokey and acrid air was from loud speakers blaring out Malay songs from a nearby hawker centre. We tried to sleep but to no avail. I cannot remember when but the music soon died down as business dwindled and the night swallowed us all into restful slumber to greet the new year morning when we awake.

Nowadays Chinese New Year is celebrated for a very different reason than that of our forefathers. Back in ancient China it was called the Spring Festival, celebrated to welcome spring after a very cold wintry season especially in the north, central and western provinces where many people, especially those who are poor and living with bare necessities, waited for the snow to melt, the sun to rise and the new leaves and flower buds to bloom, and the birds to greet the new days with hearty chirps and songs. Spring was indeed a time to celebrate. It represented victory over the dark days of winter and people were glad to have survived through those months. It was, and still is a season of hope, renewal and newness where families seek to wear new clothing and shoes, spend new money, eat new food and fire crackers to chase away the gloom and welcome in light and joy. It is not surprising therefore that the Spring Festival became the New Year for the Chinese and soon people began to call it the Lunar New Year or to those western educated, the Chinese New Year.

From a celebration of rejoicing of a new life into a new season, the CNY in modern time is no longer celebrated with this in mind since many Chinese families have eradicated poverty and sufferings and have through industry, prudence and patience, brought about prosperity to their children and grandchildren. Instead the CNY is celebrated with a time of spending what they have earned and saved through hard work. It is also a time to splurge on themselves, family and relatives, implicitly to show that they are well off. As with other cultures where migration into the cities took place in search for opportunities and wealth, families are dislocated, especially old parents and those siblings who either refuse to move into the cities or are not qualified academically to find their future in the vast urban complexes that can be frightening and alienating to those so familiar to rural settings. Hence the concept of reunion was born out of necessity to touch base, to meet up with dear ones back in their home towns or villages where the new city migrants have now return home in big cars and new fashionable clothing to visit their parents and siblings and hand over fat angpows (red packets) in their annual pilgrimage home. Nowadays Chinese New Year is just another opportunity and occasion to break away from work, go back to their roots, or to some better off financially, go holidaying in faraway places, perhaps to escape having to distribute red packets! This mass migration have also affected the non-Chinese who take similar advantage to 'balik kampong' or 'go back to the village' and the coming week will see roads and highways clogged with motorcycles, cars and coaches heading out of the cities into the villages, and then the reverse nightmare when it become 'balik rumah' or 'back to the homes' as the holiday break ends. Perhaps this trend will lessen in the next 10-20 year or so when aged parents either move out of their family house in the villages to live with their city children or grandchildren, or die off. Then the reason for 'balik kampong' become less relevant (except during the Ching Ming or All Souls Day season around late March/early April, but that is another story, another moment to also die off one day) and the mass exodus that is a Malaysian mad rush culture as much as in China, where highways and trains are choked with returnees to their home villages, or in the west when people get away in summer in droves. So it is a universal habit for people to get away. A thought to think further why are they so migratory.

From welcoming spring the CNY season has become one to re-establish family ties and sometimes, to meet up with old friends and former classmates who are returning to their hometowns for the common purpose of reunion. In this regard I think the Old Pupil Association of my alma mater in Sitiawan had done right in organizing the traditional OPA reunion on the evening of the first day of the CNY in the school hall. Being a lifetime member I try to make it there when I am home to see my mother at that time. Although the number of former classmates have sprinkled to just a handful it is still good to see each other in relatively good health and high spirit. We are now the rare species among the much younger 'graduates' and their children.

I will be on the road during the coming days. And I wish to take this opportunity to greet my readers who celebrate the Chinese New Year, Kung Xi Fa Cai, and may you have health, wealth, peace and prosperity this Year of the Dragon. Have a happy heart and keep well.

I have the privilege of using it this morning and indeed the experience was so much better than being forced to queue at the traffic light junction especially during the peak off office hours. Although both flows merge into the common lanes this new link provide an alternative access to those who are entering Seremban 2 directly. Of course residents and visitors to Rasah Kemayan are also rejoicing. However there are still element of risks. Drivers are cautioned to drive slower as they enter the new ramp and to watch out for merging traffic. I expect some confusion and a scramble by motorists emerging from the northbound Seremban toll plaza and cutting right towards the flyover rather than heading down the ramp towards the traffic light junction which will be used mostly now by drivers towards Oakland and the Tesco Extra shopping mall, the Columbia Asia Medical Centre, Bukit Kepayang, U turn back to Seremban town or to the Bukit Chedang connection to the inner ring road.

Opening this new link certainly help ease traffic during the Chinese New Year traffic flow.

Not that I am a good drinker or someone who can differentiate a great wine from an ordinary one but last Friday I think I enjoyed a really good whiskey which unfortunately I only took a small glass as I have to drive long distance home. I could have drank four or five but my family would have disapproved if anything happened.

It was a pre-arranged gathering of old friends and old classmates. It is easier to make friends with those you knew but lost touch than those you don't know. Friendship grown from a familiar past is likely to be more genuine and less motivated by anything than 'it's great to be friends' feeling. Anyway, I caught an old friend, someone I last saw like mmmm in December 1965 when we waved goodbye at the end of our school year. The only reference was an old class photo. Because he stayed less than hour away from where I stay I asked, 'NCK, how about joining our pre-Chinese New Year lunch? We go together.' I was glad he responded positively. Meeting up 46 years late is better than not. I wonder how he looked like. He sounded familiar and reachable over the phone. He set the meeting point I set the time. He said to look out for a black old Mercedes of a certain number. I in return gave mine.

At the appointed time I caught him in his car waiting. I like someone who is punctual. I got off and approached him and we greeted, two people who wouldn't have recognized each other in other circumstances. NCK is as ordinary as you can imagine, in sandals and untucked in shirt, and half shaved. Right away he apologized he couldn't go and explained why, a medical appointment for a growth that needed to be treated. I was disappointed and I knew others at the lunch would too but I understood. My long lost friend is genuinely sorry he couldn't go but asked to meet in his turf, because he like me prefer to be country folks than sleek city folks in sleek cars and frequenting posh joints. I couldn't leave empty handed so spent 15 minutes finding more of his past that we, his classmates of Form 5C of ACS Sitiawan, Perak, would love to know. We really should catch up before we are caught up.

Over lunch someone brought a bottle of 18 year old Glenfiddich Scotch Whiskey to celebrate our friendship. Although I don't know everyone at the table they all seems to me like old friends. Like the whiskey that sealed up a wonderful companionship we should all the more seek out the best of our past who are still walking and bring back wonderful memories of old friendship days. I am really hoping for a class reunion on the 50th anniversary of our last school year when we studied together, played together, teased each other and enjoyed the days of our own wine and roses ...

My foot! Would they say the same if Anwar was convicted? Here are a few reactions that immediately drew criticism and cynicism. Instead of being noble in defeat the government went on a justification exercise we don't want to hear. We want confession that the trial was a tragic mistake.

What the 901 Verdict Really Proved
Wrong Tactics
An Independent Judiciary, Really?

This is typical of many Malaysians. We love to explain why things didn't go our way and put the blame on others which is the familiar sour grape syndrome. In this case, the judge, whom at this time the Barisan government cannot openly oppose. But if they remain in power long enough the judge will soon find his career finished. But he has been both credited for his courage as well as criticized for not throwing out the case much earlier on. It is probable that he saw the change of political winds to decide in favor of Anwar, or was it his conscience against putting an innocent man down, a man who stand a chance to be the next Prime Minister! The basis for his judgement is that the prosecution did not do enough to prove that Anwar did sodomize his aide and that he wasn't convinced the DNA samples were properly taken and/or analysed. Although that itself was sufficient ground to acquit Anwar it failed to prove that Anwar was wrongly charged, or that the crime never took place. Maybe we need the 'victim' Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan to take an oath or swear upon the Koran. Perry Mason would have wrapped up the case within a few months rather than dragged for over 2 years that wasted public funds, time and shame the nation in international eyes.

Much sympathy and empathy goes to the family who suffered emotional, mental and spiritual trauma during the entire trial and approaching the judgement day. Everyone was prepared for the worst, even Anwar himself, was psychologically prepared to spend his old age in jail and his political and public life destroyed thereafter. I believe his acquittal was divinely intervened. I believe Anwar will live to restore the dignity and worth of this country we call home. I believe we should give him and his coalition a chance to rebuild Malaysia. Who else can offer this hope? After I read THIS and THIS report my faith in the institution of family and marriage is restored. Anwar's trial tested both and the entire family came away stronger than before. May we learn to value this family where father, wife and daughter can and must provide leadership to our nation. Collectively they have sacrificed more than what we can imagine.

Some readers again mooted the idea of Nurul Izzah (Anwar's eldest daughter) as our next Prime Minister. I say why not? Six months ago I've blogged giving my support. She have the maturity, balance, in-depth thinking and perseverance that even politicians twice her age cannot compare. And she is good-looking, a refreshing sight for a new leadership we sorely need.

Read HERE.

It is indeed a miracle. Nearly everyone except Anwar's lead lawyer, Karpal Singh, who is also DAP's chairman, felt Anwar will go to jail. Indeed 2012 has begun with great excitement and political possibilities. The game plan has changed and Pakatan Rakyat has scored a major psychological and moral victory over Barisan in its quest to wrestle control of Putrajaya from Barisan. With Anwar freed ends a 2 year bitter sweet tussle between Najib Razak and Anwar Ibrahim. On the sideline, Malaysian voters watch with keen interest how the coming weeks and months will be played out. The big question is whether Najib will delay calling the 13th general election to recoup his position? Or will the delay further strengthen Anwar's bid to topple him? It is indeed a tough choice which must be made sooner or later.

Looks like the 901 Free Anwar Campaign has succeeded beyond expectation although the turnout was well below its 100,000 target.

I have three other registry cleaners in my PC and each of them detected anything between 20 to 200 but this program detected over 3000! Awesome! It shows its awesome power in digging up what other similar programs fail to accomplish. Since having a clean and slim registry is paramount to fast startup and quick access to programs installed, the TuneUp Suite is a must for all Windows 7 PC users.

Apart from the registry cleaner this nifty utility that is only 1.33Mb in size packs a bomb in other features such as junk files cleaner and duplicate files finder. The layout is neat and easily applied by even a novice to ensure his computer is organized and primed to perform at its peak.

There is a module to analyse the storage disks in the PC, a smart uninstaller to quickly uninstall any programs that does not meet the need of the user, a registry defragmenter to improve the access time to this file, an optimizer to speed up startup as well as manage those services that are essential. The developer even describe briefly the function of each service to help you decide to disable it, set to run manually or automatically. It is very user friendly. Lastly there is a history cleaner to help you manage your privacy on the Net.

The TuneUp Suite is very fast. It takes split second to launch and does its job in a hurry which I like. It is a very good program for anyone who wish to have a single software to house-keep his PC to run efficiently. It was Grace 3rd day (her class started only on Wednesday) and yesterday was Andrew's 2nd day inside the Kinderland kindergarten to wait for his sister to finish class. As we were a little early we allowed him to explore the compound and soon he wandered into a waiting zone where a group of 4-5 year old were gathered to be dismissed. Andrew confidently removed his sandals and strode into the room and started socializing with the kids more than twice his age. My wife and I watched in both amazement and amusement. He is more matured and sociable than some nursery kids, some of whom were still crying. Based on his exposure he can even join the kindergarten now but being still UNDER 2 years old we have to keep him at home for another year.

Before leaving he cheekily waved goodbye and high five the staff. Since Christmas was recently over I thought I'd borrow this jingle to express the joy my wife and I felt when we received a call this morning, 'Would you like to have some durians?'. I replied 'Sure' and soon we were on our way to their house 3 minutes away together with little Andrew who always enjoy rides. Every time we said we're going out or 'kai kai' he'd immediately ran to his shoes and wore them in double quick time and be the first to the car.

My wife drove and I sat at the back with Andrew strapped to the car seat. Since January 1, it has become an offence to not strap down and the fine is RM300. We have to educate ourselves and our children to abide by this new law. Andrew quietly played with his car toys and I made a paper plane from a paper flyer to amuse him. He love planes and stuff mechanical.

Our friends greeted us and showed us a big basket of newly plucked durians. The husband said they were from his brother's orchard and to take what we want. We took randomly six. Back home, after our breakfast, I eagerly wedged them open using a cleaver and some rags to protect my palms and fingers from the thorns, and then remove the yellow pulpy seeds into clean plastic containers, irresistibly intercepting a few into our mouths to enjoy their gorgeous tastes. Even Andrew got a small introduction to this new taste but we're careful not to feed him anything beyond a sampling. After the fruits were all opened we found all but one of excellent taste. We will remember to thank our friends for the kind new year gesture. A few days ago our daughter in Petaling Jaya had also given us a tub of the same fruit which tasted as heavenly. Looks like we have a duriany start to the new year!

While the general spirit is one of celebration, with fireworks and parties to greet the new year, we must not forget the reluctance we silently feel within to see the old year die. Good or bad, it has become our history. So how do you feel about 2011? Do you have any regrets that you did not spend enough time doing what you ought to have done? Do you feel you have overcome some challenges that will make 2011 a year to remember? Do you put it down as a year of great celebration - a birth, a graduation, a financial success, an accolade bestowed? Or did 2011 fled into your inconspicuous past as if it never existed?

As I pen this we are soon to complete our first week of 2012, how very fast time passed. In percentage we would have spent almost 2% of the new year. Yet I don't feel hopeful that the new year will be bringing much joy, beyond the fact that my wife and I will be blessed with two more grandchildren, they will outshine any other successes I may enjoy this year. As a Malaysian I feel a sense of heaviness. There is no collective unity among the races. The standard of living has deteriorated. People feel less connected and more suspicious. And you can almost sense that as a nation we have come apart. Something momentous must take place in 2012 to restore our faith that Malaysia can be great again. What will that be? Will we have the courage to fight evil with all our strength to see civilization restored to what we hope it will be?

(Added January 9, 2012)
Is the freeing of Anwar Ibrahim from the sodomy charge THE momentous moment?

When I listened to this video and watched the background scenery my soul grew weary and disappointed with humankind. We have failed to be good stewards of the world we were entrusted to look after. In our greed and selfishness we have polluted our earth that in another generation or two it may just become unlivable. It will be a powerful rendition of the traditional Auld Lang Syne that make you want to stay in the old year. Listen and enjoy. If you can in high definition. Thanks Al for the lead.

If ever we must have a common resolution this new year it should be to seek for whatever that unite and build it. If we fail to live together we will be overcome and eventually destroyed by others. Happy and United New Year, Malaysia.

Sometimes the remedy of our human ills comes not from science or medicine but the comfort and companionship of another fellow creation of God, in this case an eagle. And often the favor you showed comes back in a most unexpected way.

Freedom and I have been together 11 years this summer. She came in as a baby in 1998 with two broken wings. Her left wing doesn't open all the way even after surgery, it was broken in 4 places. She's my baby.

When Freedom came in she could not stand and both wings were broken. She was emaciated and covered in lice. We made the decision to give her a chance at life, so I took her to the vet's office. From then on, I was always around her. We had her in a huge dog carrier with the top off, and it was loaded up with shredded newspaper for her to lay in. I used to sit and talk to her, urging her to live, to fight; and she would lay there looking at me with those big brown eyes. We also had to tube feed her for weeks.

This went on for 4-6 weeks, and by then she still couldn't stand. It got to the point where the decision was made to euthanize her if she couldn't stand in a week. You know you don't want to cross that line between torture and rehab, and it looked like death was winning. She was going to be put down that Friday, and I was supposed to come in on that Thursday afternoon. I didn't want to go to the center that Thursday, because I couldn't bear the thought of her being euthanized; but I went anyway, and when I walked in everyone was grinning from ear to ear. I went immediately back to her cage; and there she was, standing on her own, a big beautiful eagle. She was ready to live. I was just about in tears by then. That was a very good day.

We knew she could never fly, so the director asked me to glove train her. I got her used to the glove, and then to jesses, and we started doing education programs for schools in western Washington. We wound up in the newspapers, radio (believe it or not) and some TV. Miracle Pets even did a show about us.

In the spring of 2000, I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. I had stage 3, which is not good (one major organ plus everywhere), so I wound up doing 8 months of chemo. Lost the hair - the whole bit. I missed a lot of work. When I felt good enough, I would go to Sarvey and take Freedom out for walks. Freedom would also come to me in my dreams and help me fight the cancer. This happened time and time again.

Fast forward to November 2000 the day after Thanksgiving, I went in for my last checkup. I was told that if the cancer was not all gone after 8 rounds of chemo, then my last option was a stem cell transplant. Anyway, they did the tests; and I had to come back Monday for the results. I went in Monday, and I was told that all the cancer was gone.

So the first thing I did was get up to Sarvey and take the big girl out for a walk. It was misty and cold. I went to her flight and jessed her up, and we went out front to the top of the hill. I hadn't said a word to Freedom, but somehow she knew. She looked at me and wrapped both her wings around me to where I could feel them pressing in on my back (I was engulfed in eagle wings), and she touched my nose with her beak and stared into my eyes, and we just stood there like that for I don't know how long. That was a magic moment. We have been soul mates ever since she came in. This is a very special bird.

On a side note: I have had people who were sick come up to us when we are out, and Freedom has some kind of hold on them. I once had a guy who was terminal come up to us and I let him hold her. His knees just about buckled and he swore he could feel her power course through his body. I have so many stories like that.

I never forget the honor I have of being so close to such a magnificent spirit as Freedom.

Hope you enjoyed this!

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings as eagles;
they shall run, and not be weary;
and they shall walk, and not faint.

Isaiah 40:31

Cancer is a strange cell. You can go along for years in remission and then one day it pops its head up again. If you ever have it you will never be free of it. Pray for the day there will be a permanent cure.

Dear God,
I pray that You will guide someone to find a cure for cancer in 2012. It wasn't her first exposure. Last year, at the tender age of 3 years and 4 months she was inducted into a nearby kindy and after 3 months opted out because she found the environment insecure to what she enjoyed at home. She cried and was afraid but complied nonetheless. I could see that she was happy to see the session end and look forward to be home. This year her parents enrolled her in another kindy. She was put in the 5 year old class so she shouldn't be as teary or fearful as it was a year ago. Being the person she is, adapting to any new environment takes more encouragement than other kids (I believe her brother Andrew will pass with flying colour) so this morning she displayed a little of her old self. The reluctance to move from the past is evident but her courage and maturity helped the overcoming process. I saw that coming when we fetched her awhile ago. Dressed in her green kindy uniform she walked past me even as I was scanning the exit door for her. And she didn't cry nor show any anxiety. It was good and I know given a few more days she will look forward to meeting her new friends and teachers.

<img style="cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-PCdXxxYP0hg/TwVB0GalYWI/AAAAAAAAJ4g/mkBd8YmkIA8/s400/2012-01-05%2B12.10.37.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5694029667210977634" />

At the national level, although we don't hear of families crying under the current economic weather when many struggle to balance rising costs with stagnating income, we know many are afraid if they will be overwhelmed. It is indeed a season of fear in the new year. Many asked, do you think 2012 will be better? A lot of people I asked weren't sure. The outcome of the general election to be called soon may create new problems, including threats of public disorder. Even the verdict of Anwar Ibrahim's Sodomy II case next Monday will create some impact. Then there is the caution of how the Eurozone financial crisis will be contained, if it can be. Most likely we will affected negatively. Hence the fear that we are heading into turbulence.

How do you manage uncertainties? I take the advice of how you manage hydro-planing to be applied in our home and national lives. Don't brake! Hold the steering wheel tight. Release the accelerator and gentle tap the brake pedal to ease the car into control again. Do not fear.

In the season of uncertainty, do not fear. Don't over-react but keep your routine steady. Reduce your spending, avoiding what is unnecessary and gradually pull your financial management back to control. Don't speed (overspend) but maintain what you are capable of (live according to your means, skills and capabilities) and you will be shielded from clouds of rainy days.

Malaysia Today online news portal administrator and author Raja Petra Kamaruddin or RPK as he was popularly known in Malaysian politics after the debacle of the 12th General Election on 8 March 2008 became betrayer, much like Judas Iscariot who accepted 30 pieces of silver from the chief priests to betray Jesus in the garden of Getsemane and have him arrested and put to death. While RPK may not go the way of Judas Iscariot, who was remorseful for turning against his master, his act has already been watched, seen and despised as despicable. Overnight his credibility plummeted into negative territory. It puts to shame how a human being who had been bearing a torch against unrighteousness, injustice and immorality, suddenly became a turncoat. One wonders if he feels remorseful and why. Was it also for a symbolic 30 pieces of silver? Conscience is a powerful lighthouse searching and seeking out wrongdoings. Many a life has been wrecked on the rocks of a lighthouse because he has allowed his soul to be purchased by the Devil. Judas Iscariot did and not only paid the price with his own life, but also entered the history book of humanity as the most gutless, hated and worthless soul that ever lived on earth.

But if you read the Bible beyond chapter 27 of the Gospel of Matthew in the New Testament, you will see that Judas Iscariot had been the tool that fulfill God's divine plan of having Jesus die, then resurrected three days later. The victory over death using sinners like Judas Iscariot should be seen in a positive light. In the case of RPK, although it is not identical, the lesson being taught is the same. RPK betrayed his followers, relinquishing the higher reward for a cheaper perishable one. Instead of converting them his followers are now even more determined to see the principles he so fervently fought for realized. It is like RPK has shone a light in the political consciousness of his followers that continue to shine although he has now deserted them and change allegiance. Eventually that light shall be victorious because you cannot extinguish truth when so much light are now shining in the dark.

THIS commentary echoes my sentiment. It is my hope RPK will find courage to reclaim his moral stand he fought for all these years and find his just place in the political history of the new Malaysia.

Note: the death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, started a religious revolution we all know as Christianity. Judas Iscariot was a party to this life changing impact.

I guess it would be some 35 years ago after I left home to be in the big city and gotten the experience of nice hotel and airport toilets.

This is from my earlier post,

"Right at the back of the house was the bathroom and an adjoining squatting toilet. The bathroom was only build before mid 1960s. It was in this bathroom that I practiced my singing skills. I did not know if my neighbors ever complained of my singing. There were no electric heaters in those days so when I needed hot water, like when I was unwell, my mother would boil a kettle of hot water and mix in the cold water for me to bath in. The toilet (it was actually a latrine) was not a place to stay in for long as it stank from the faeces that were collected once every week by the nightsoil lorry. Years later, around 1975, when a sitting toilet was installed everybody was relieved. I guess that was a sign of progress."

As I already left home in 1966 I never really used a sitting toilet when I was in my hometown. I was a squatter in my youth. Even in Form 6 and university the houses I stayed in still had squatting toilets because they were built in the 1960s or earlier when sitting toilets were not yet fashionable. It was a 'white man's' invention that we Chinese found alien to adapt but as time passes we did, we discovered it was more hygienic and pleasant to lower ourselves halfway rather than all the way. And less chance of wetting our pants too.

After I graduated in 1971 and stayed in different houses I cannot recall being a 'sitting duck' inside a cubicle. Worse I cannot recall when it was I momentously enjoyed my very first moment of shitting sitting rather than squatting. Perhaps it wasn't an event worth recalling to be remembered but in hindsight I should have documented it somewhere because thereafter I disliked squatting. Maybe it reminded me of the poorer and less sophisticated past, maybe fewer squatting toilets exist to be discovered in an emergency when you need to 'do your business'. But recently when I was at the Changi International Airport I was pleasantly surprised to discover they have a squatting toilet which I chose to use unhesitatingly. It was cleaner although it took me more efforts to get down and get up.

Over the years as I grow older I got used to sitting because it becomes increasingly harder to squat even if I choose to. Mild obesity and weak knees are justifying excuses. However using sitting toilets in public facilities turns me off unless disposable paper seat covers are provided. In an emergency I confess to using many pieces of toilet papers to protect my bump from the unclean toilet seat. In a most dirty scenario when previous users had already dirtied the seat I'd had no choice but lift it up and squat on top. Gratefully all those toilets have successfully bored my weight and not cracked. There should be a disclaimer of no liability or maximum allowable carrying weight.

Today I read an online article claiming the virtues of squatting over sitting and analyzing the rationale I agree completely. I don't have the website but the article was written by a Stephanie Relfe. She explains:

The anal canal is UNSTRAIGHTENED when seated. Bowel evacuation when seated results frequently in OBSTRUCTIVE CONSTIPATION. Adopt a relaxed, FULL SQUAT POSTURE and the anal canal STRAIGHTENS. In a sitting position the puborectalis muscle chokes the rectum causing incontinence. Squatting relaxes that muscle and straightens the rectum allowing smoother and faster voiding of the feces. (Last two sentences slightly edited).

I wish to add another reason. When one squats we compress our intestinal cavity which help and assist squeezing of the feces as well as requiring less push.

The design of modern toilets must be modified to encourage squatting and aiding senior and handicapped users to squat with suitable handrails. Maybe someone can design a combination sit-squat toilet which can be lowered-raised at will. Alternatively in homes with more then one toilet, designate one to be a squat type.

I don't know if sitting contributes to pile development or as the author suggested rising cases of colon cancers caused by poor diet and lack of exercises. But I do believe that if we squat more we can achieve a healthier body. It was after all the only way our ancestors knew each time they answered the calls of nature.
