<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Kinder Friends,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Well, with my room under construction it's fair to say that it has been an interesting start to the school year to say the least. I feel like I have been on a long scavenger hunt that has lasted a lot longer than I had anticipated. When I finally find something I am looking for it almost feels like Christmas. On the flip side of the construction, I really have learned a valuable lesson. As I tried to ease my nerves about starting a new school year without having every little thing in place, I learned that I had to let go of the idea of perfection and enjoy the joy in each day. And I learned that we really need fewer things to survive in kindergarten than I had originally thought. The kids were just happy to be in kindergarten finally and they didn't seem to care at all that things in the environment were not perfect. </div>
<div class="separator" style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirOdM9AQOvbvtN181agN1GVpJNSDkOupTfPCbjCeki6xM7pGUiMWHaaCuyl3k9lmpBYa4zHjtBqQ8hvKNoWXjtpdMwDG6bNj1bMGwIKOLqrKuXCzG5YK2Nu1hVfXpgvICFB9B8rPFby3Kc/s1600/Welcome+Portraits.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1027" data-original-width="1600" height="410" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirOdM9AQOvbvtN181agN1GVpJNSDkOupTfPCbjCeki6xM7pGUiMWHaaCuyl3k9lmpBYa4zHjtBqQ8hvKNoWXjtpdMwDG6bNj1bMGwIKOLqrKuXCzG5YK2Nu1hVfXpgvICFB9B8rPFby3Kc/s640/Welcome+Portraits.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As Open House was approaching I wasn't sure if I would be back in my old room or if I would still be in the new room. No matter what I had to get things ready for parents to come and visit the classroom. I will admit I had no grand plan. It was hard to get motivated considering I still felt like nothing was perfect or even close. I came in each day and stared at the walls and I was afraid to look at the shelves because they were not so organized but in reality only I would have known that! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5e4ozn7YjxACe4t2xJt_I2TBn_wwLNF_2zicHZ31Vv1HjdzXgfhcHivYqoS-25DqsO-3rKG47mgb-PT7t1C2hC9L7HAbMGbc1j2NuhcwKqZHxlnXVxmo8RcfZEQO8UxNRtM9LnCdSGDtl/s1600/Classroom+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5e4ozn7YjxACe4t2xJt_I2TBn_wwLNF_2zicHZ31Vv1HjdzXgfhcHivYqoS-25DqsO-3rKG47mgb-PT7t1C2hC9L7HAbMGbc1j2NuhcwKqZHxlnXVxmo8RcfZEQO8UxNRtM9LnCdSGDtl/s640/Classroom+3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As I passed my old room each day I knew I needed a pick-me-up and quick. We decided on self portraits because it is such a traditional kindergarten must. And I knew these would do the trick to add some life and color to the bare walls. But this time was different. A teacher friend of mine suggested that I include a you tube video to help facilitate the lesson. I believe this really helped the children produce such great self portraits. Not only could they visually see the process, they could hear the artist explain as he drew. The results were amazing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/5a7anGhsRQM/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5a7anGhsRQM?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We watched the video and used scrap paper to practice drawing our self portraits. I had plenty of paper on hand and we used it. Some children were happy with their first portrait and others were not. We practiced drawing a new portrait for five days and ended those sessions evaluating each portrait as they were shared. I believe all of us had a better idea of how to approach our final portrait after practicing for five days and learning how each person created theirs. The final products were amazing to look at. Each portrait had personality. I could not wait to hang them on the walls for Open House!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpFSETVsmYLAwRXgN9-3hyphenhyphenj13fIs1Wh26RMw890MND27g-RY42Jsv2puNC3hqqaO780WwpRDB0U6fq7jxgNoQigZWWnFByaBS16nlMqvxihSsVrPP0sb4pfvWLWr-MTFUAGHqQFY9XK7A3/s1600/Mrs+Coe+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1508" data-original-width="1600" height="602" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgpFSETVsmYLAwRXgN9-3hyphenhyphenj13fIs1Wh26RMw890MND27g-RY42Jsv2puNC3hqqaO780WwpRDB0U6fq7jxgNoQigZWWnFByaBS16nlMqvxihSsVrPP0sb4pfvWLWr-MTFUAGHqQFY9XK7A3/s640/Mrs+Coe+1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After the self portraits were up it started to feel a little more like home. I was able to throw together a few decorations behind my desk just in time. And the morale to this story is that the kids were happy to just be in kindergarten and it didn't matter if things were perfect. The parents were snapping pictures of the self portraits and the conversations were lively. Nobody ever knew things were not perfect or how I would have done this or that had there been no construction. I learned to not sweat the small stuff and move on and <i><b>enjoy the joy in everyday</b></i> no matter if it's perfect or not! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Kinder Friends,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We spent a lot of time setting goals last year and talking about positive mindsets. So when we were put to the challenge of a team challenge and contest, I think it all kind of collided. I think the hardest part of a team challenge is definitely defining the focus and getting started on a plan. And all I could muster up were images in my head of vintage red trucks carrying Christmas trees. I guess I was wishing I was back on break and things were not so busy. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGZPvIzDtVDrd0mhPCkOS5orFw3dq2kMw8p2jLxhJRa1LVfaBC54rr45LR5fTfT1TelKvER6Yj9XUkAc1RHZ_dc2knxcIX6Sv_B3txHNm4JhQXKudZq8q1neHRE1sbe291Van3ARY0YTII/s1600/Goals+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGZPvIzDtVDrd0mhPCkOS5orFw3dq2kMw8p2jLxhJRa1LVfaBC54rr45LR5fTfT1TelKvER6Yj9XUkAc1RHZ_dc2knxcIX6Sv_B3txHNm4JhQXKudZq8q1neHRE1sbe291Van3ARY0YTII/s640/Goals+4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After setting goals for the spring semester with our classes and displaying them it kind of made the truck idea seem a little more tied in to a theme of positive mindset traffic signs and trucks on the move. Once we all agreed on the theme and the kids had set their goals we really were ready to getting moving in the right direction. And once we got started we really were on a roll.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4DeD0OvzpC-AWgQ790cTEhpR8GI7qcHvmF9LYZXb46tlXrEc3R3m-iejI-dC2wfBTW_JWYH5SLaevZNtKiHw7qDJQP8vvBxB5_pNleVPm-MuVOn2MgFes7LYZSQv8pWm5xp91fW4YwBM1/s1600/Display+case.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4DeD0OvzpC-AWgQ790cTEhpR8GI7qcHvmF9LYZXb46tlXrEc3R3m-iejI-dC2wfBTW_JWYH5SLaevZNtKiHw7qDJQP8vvBxB5_pNleVPm-MuVOn2MgFes7LYZSQv8pWm5xp91fW4YwBM1/s640/Display+case.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We were so excited our theme even reached the main building. And we all noticed that having the positive signs displayed just about everywhere seemed to uplift us all at a very busy time of year. We had the display up for open house and several weeks after. It was hard to take it all down because it was our favorite theme the entire year. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUXsoQXuribQTl83UUmNPyHe7Z-g8dDLKXdNGfqzSe23QNkgp-C1tXVnowKJki7-Zrcbt-bHu5xj1BUGuK0HnZNG7AIbBWuzed1Mbsu7ZhAbVacNp41i1I5OwU88zeUQRKPBf8x1xNin2P/s1600/Hallway.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUXsoQXuribQTl83UUmNPyHe7Z-g8dDLKXdNGfqzSe23QNkgp-C1tXVnowKJki7-Zrcbt-bHu5xj1BUGuK0HnZNG7AIbBWuzed1Mbsu7ZhAbVacNp41i1I5OwU88zeUQRKPBf8x1xNin2P/s640/Hallway.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What really made this challenge fun was that we got to work together on a project in a different way than usual. I quickly discovered that I work with very creative teachers. We paired up on different parts of the project. We laughed a lot. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYKiwiOQmH9HdJyk9AJ4cYYfj-buIubRQ6QTgWGfuQ1ZKn17qDRslVC73h0kNvnWC5T-TCUFxu3jIn4jvoyp78hGDKoGeIWx0exeTgHCPMg6j6_EVs0P9ae7pTmP90h_zsDAFc62tsfY29/s1600/Hallway+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYKiwiOQmH9HdJyk9AJ4cYYfj-buIubRQ6QTgWGfuQ1ZKn17qDRslVC73h0kNvnWC5T-TCUFxu3jIn4jvoyp78hGDKoGeIWx0exeTgHCPMg6j6_EVs0P9ae7pTmP90h_zsDAFc62tsfY29/s640/Hallway+3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We had true collaboration and I also learned that I work with a team of perfectionists! I swear I do not remember the hallway being so clean or cohesive except for the day the building was opened 17 years ago. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimqFvpBl6QMyPfdqnkCoZDVyjMzOx5etSMlaEGkV-F_GNNy9p_WXZFKXBv9fqcKsgbhfW65JoHt2iJ-MA_YgLX0GCy3ySVK9QZ9_IZg8E9OeVC5sB6zAjrE43q9omyl2cP_fC48xagXRwr/s1600/Drivers+Lic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimqFvpBl6QMyPfdqnkCoZDVyjMzOx5etSMlaEGkV-F_GNNy9p_WXZFKXBv9fqcKsgbhfW65JoHt2iJ-MA_YgLX0GCy3ySVK9QZ9_IZg8E9OeVC5sB6zAjrE43q9omyl2cP_fC48xagXRwr/s640/Drivers+Lic.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I think one of my favorite parts about the team collaboration was having a general theme but having our own personality shine through. It was a lot of fun coming up with individual motto's for our drivers license, license plates, quotes for above our doors and individual truck designs. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8DF7dcHIg6yypOwaVSSCqDWv_6fe-8l3iAb3VBG7vpCP5iEr0Yskuv8fhZoPlxWVsc4MXsOJU9c7Hc8YxGIbQ4BEFWiFvFAOqZulLbIi4XyzFbcQp-Hx-VQoebW_7w5Kh0PU7hBtgYB4B/s1600/Door+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh8DF7dcHIg6yypOwaVSSCqDWv_6fe-8l3iAb3VBG7vpCP5iEr0Yskuv8fhZoPlxWVsc4MXsOJU9c7Hc8YxGIbQ4BEFWiFvFAOqZulLbIi4XyzFbcQp-Hx-VQoebW_7w5Kh0PU7hBtgYB4B/s640/Door+2.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It was a lot of fun looking at each door as it was put up and noticing the personality of each teacher come out. We had a lot of great comments on the night of open house. Parents commented on the goals the children had set for themselves, how they could help them reach their goals and they got to know a little bit about us personally through the decorations. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUCwgN2xNQdxKJcJaIYt8BV-K3wqg8lfBBkNs8ehOWftnYW_OF8SuoaMGb_PPKTL_11WBjh6cN3tVWXu0bdjYD0x1XKW4FQQ8Dfkeavm27qa1Qk89oW2lFz9Xv-smWTQZv4J3aGI3L6NpJ/s1600/Door+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjUCwgN2xNQdxKJcJaIYt8BV-K3wqg8lfBBkNs8ehOWftnYW_OF8SuoaMGb_PPKTL_11WBjh6cN3tVWXu0bdjYD0x1XKW4FQQ8Dfkeavm27qa1Qk89oW2lFz9Xv-smWTQZv4J3aGI3L6NpJ/s640/Door+1.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Our theme kind of took off and PreK wanted to join us! And they set their own goals too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJJwqsnC1-z9FfoOAdlBxuxrhHIBl4Kx9udvggePmD8Yf2WZAfhldPiTFcqWunu7rznmHLxukS7FdIkAkH-jweODduyeUQStVFzSPPcIDDT_XRgCfEpp63Ntjl3hGWBuhRcOL0DpN12GLg/s1600/Prek+.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgJJwqsnC1-z9FfoOAdlBxuxrhHIBl4Kx9udvggePmD8Yf2WZAfhldPiTFcqWunu7rznmHLxukS7FdIkAkH-jweODduyeUQStVFzSPPcIDDT_XRgCfEpp63Ntjl3hGWBuhRcOL0DpN12GLg/s640/Prek+.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Once everything was done we almost forgot it was a team challenge. Even if we didn't win we were happy with what we had accomplished together. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKKOBXGg6kqVH4mFvwUhDw33qMmCa1eJefN-h0mlcwmIO59ZVQjcGovTagw0jc7LT4wzqnkgB7Fz5VSA0R7o2hHNtgDpiPFVjQ4JtvvSq3OBeCg-QOJtVPXMn2CP5awdMxzeKiBhDNS6Ek/s1600/Prek+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiKKOBXGg6kqVH4mFvwUhDw33qMmCa1eJefN-h0mlcwmIO59ZVQjcGovTagw0jc7LT4wzqnkgB7Fz5VSA0R7o2hHNtgDpiPFVjQ4JtvvSq3OBeCg-QOJtVPXMn2CP5awdMxzeKiBhDNS6Ek/s640/Prek+2.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But it sure was sweet when it was announced that we did win and we got to leave early the Friday before spring break! </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Kinder Friends,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Fall is in the air and we are beginning to feel it. So, naturally we were excited to get busy with a little bit of fall fun. As the leaves begin to turn colors we were busy talking about Spookley the Square Pumpkin. I knew my class had not heard the story before so I was excited to get out the book and dig right in. It gave us a good reason to talk about how we are alike and different and begin the discussion about bullying. </div>

<div class="separator" style="text-align: center;">
You can still get this book from Amazon and if you want to get it on video that is available too. I like reading the book because I think it delivers the message better than a lengthy video. The kids were super excited to make Spookley and we will be writing about Spookley this coming week. </div>

<div class="separator" style="text-align: center;">
When I saw these counters I knew I had to have them for my class. I thought they would be perfect for the counting buckets we had in class already. As soon as I got them out the kids wanted to use them right away. I found them at Hobby Lobby and bought three bags but I really wish I had bought four! </div>
<div align="center">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0Zo8nXbWalzBNx1G_NqagVKRUVEBkJYJL5AsrZu_boqNW3fvYfJF0cZf_w92x3ED6MtoThamnhjdRCt37qUYNlSw4m3db0g25JAJmjIahjxvH_JAY7vUTxYPCmdAMsy8dC8Fd45eRQxjK/s1600/Counters+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0Zo8nXbWalzBNx1G_NqagVKRUVEBkJYJL5AsrZu_boqNW3fvYfJF0cZf_w92x3ED6MtoThamnhjdRCt37qUYNlSw4m3db0g25JAJmjIahjxvH_JAY7vUTxYPCmdAMsy8dC8Fd45eRQxjK/s640/Counters+4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div align="center">
We had been talking a lot about counting, counting strategies and organizing our count. These I knew would be perfect for practicing that skill. I knew we needed to review that before moving on to greater numbers. Once we were working with them we discovered that these could also be used for sorting by size, shape and color. And now I am wishing I had about five bags instead of three! As the children were counting the fall objects with the buckets, I was able to notice the different counting methods my class uses. Some children count and move the objects as they count. Some put everything in a row and then count. Some use the bucket and empty it and count as each one goes in. And a few had no method at all. These were perfect for a discussion about ways to count. As they went off to independent work they asked if they could use them on counting mats. Take it from me you will want more than three bags because three was not enough for our counting mats. We added apple counters and the problem was solved. But I still want...<b><i>more</i></b>!</div>

Hey Kinder Friends,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So much fun talking about the weather as the weather is changing. It is always a topic we discuss as we observe the daily weather and look forward to spending time outdoors. Considering we have Weather Wednesday each week when we record our observations and we discuss and collect weather data daily you can imagine it is tough to keep the discussion fresh and ongoing at times. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx4Lw-7SzVb0ExUmt7nScmpOvNlEMACsFzBvXPdC6lvG4iEdJa7UX4JEbRVbXL902hWoXVIWTjrE1u3UQlohRgl03pfse4nArZEnM2txfWmdGCs0hPkatNYv4bKHpdatfqOZ_v_kFM0SH7/s1600/Wind+Socks+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhx4Lw-7SzVb0ExUmt7nScmpOvNlEMACsFzBvXPdC6lvG4iEdJa7UX4JEbRVbXL902hWoXVIWTjrE1u3UQlohRgl03pfse4nArZEnM2txfWmdGCs0hPkatNYv4bKHpdatfqOZ_v_kFM0SH7/s640/Wind+Socks+5.jpg" width="614" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We finally had a few days with some wind so we decided to shape our discussion around that. According to our standards our children are supposed to collect information using tools such as wind socks. So we decided to look up wind socks before making our own. Just a simple search and we were able to find lots of examples to look at. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZKnNN1MVh3Yfo0VSpBmBagQTf_7399qZf23q0vHW8I5IfnRH0xbSJxsxR8_8iPBOULTJ0Z0AgYeBelIxTpJl4VYR_SsBfUm5MbGiAy3gIASjhNufvut1ue5Jc_yBqB-vJtRO0CcMAMFUW/s1600/Wind+Socks+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiZKnNN1MVh3Yfo0VSpBmBagQTf_7399qZf23q0vHW8I5IfnRH0xbSJxsxR8_8iPBOULTJ0Z0AgYeBelIxTpJl4VYR_SsBfUm5MbGiAy3gIASjhNufvut1ue5Jc_yBqB-vJtRO0CcMAMFUW/s640/Wind+Socks+6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Our wind socks were pretty simple and we decided on a weather theme. Just construction paper and some streamers and a little bit of glue and we had some pretty cute wind socks to hang around! <div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Kinder Friends,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was excited to start the week knowing that I would be introducing pie graphs to my class. Since most of my class did not attend prek last year I was equally excited to tie these lessons to some kinder favorite books. The best part probably was that not very many children had actually heard of the books that we would be reading. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYr1NBBJnMDfJfFxbe3Vw4jGmz4Q49l4K6_JOodRXdPwtx2D6cRC6ZXqfcT2olzC34iC5h12f7we7_hk6QBWfaLYV7l1K9L9PYm1TAPwt2viioPP9ZcIbMLyDeM2X_S2zCDTA-oXvLcVTX/s1600/Pie+Graphs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYr1NBBJnMDfJfFxbe3Vw4jGmz4Q49l4K6_JOodRXdPwtx2D6cRC6ZXqfcT2olzC34iC5h12f7we7_hk6QBWfaLYV7l1K9L9PYm1TAPwt2viioPP9ZcIbMLyDeM2X_S2zCDTA-oXvLcVTX/s320/Pie+Graphs.jpg" width="289" /></a></div>
We started the week by reading about pie graphs and learning how they are used. And considering it was the beginning of the year we started off with pie graphs with small numbers which made it simple to understand. At the end of the week I wanted the children to understand that we could use a pie graph to gather information and draw conclusions from graphs. The small numbers kept this pretty simple. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo21SS4V1px7q6fc-No4Ie3tnUtdz8vwGA11pxZt5wBT2KrPhFWLO5VdYNGMjbltmRwNJ830a5vWf0kx47fDvoi2TbNSQud92-GQo-IT5Pizwe9SUxg651sSs0xhnofNSuqJnltGkcELRE/s1600/If+You+Give+A+Mouse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgo21SS4V1px7q6fc-No4Ie3tnUtdz8vwGA11pxZt5wBT2KrPhFWLO5VdYNGMjbltmRwNJ830a5vWf0kx47fDvoi2TbNSQud92-GQo-IT5Pizwe9SUxg651sSs0xhnofNSuqJnltGkcELRE/s1600/If+You+Give+A+Mouse.jpg" /></a></div>
I picked and old favorite to start off our pie graph fun. For the first time out the children did very good and asked a lot of questions. I had to help a lot at first as we discussed the pie graphs which I had expected. By day three they were well on their way to working to complete the pie chart on their own and they had a lot more to add to our discussion as we discussed our pie graphs.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikXaZ-HEQ10XtYIqvWS270Anm7Q9R_0kSGALS8oFuB5ibFiRDieSP7_LygYZs7qFfQ75lGWOSE8Cb6Y5b4eLOcVFLbN-qOuXp9GP_NbhF_0xYK_9WhHDV9JbT1IC5360bzGp0bDsCujDOz/s1600/The+Big+Hungry+bear.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikXaZ-HEQ10XtYIqvWS270Anm7Q9R_0kSGALS8oFuB5ibFiRDieSP7_LygYZs7qFfQ75lGWOSE8Cb6Y5b4eLOcVFLbN-qOuXp9GP_NbhF_0xYK_9WhHDV9JbT1IC5360bzGp0bDsCujDOz/s1600/The+Big+Hungry+bear.jpg" /></a></div>
Each day of the week the children really looked forward to the math book. Funny thing is that the books are just classic favorites that any teacher has on hand and paired with a math focus lesson on pie charts. It is fun to read to a class that hasn't heard even the most popular children's books. After 17 years I have not had that experience before. I usually hear how they have read every book I pick up in prek! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGFCe6JmR0aBIZ1S8akb2-GhDaeyJpkwv-Hx6u6b4UapV4iSdMNpehmNz5V0EtiyKcFzNo6N6eTVkdV5BUpAMDMBDJxHGdRY1mlMhJy4bwFnHw2omsrzYIW7OJgpLv91phFv9ovNPodiES/s1600/Pete+Graph.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGFCe6JmR0aBIZ1S8akb2-GhDaeyJpkwv-Hx6u6b4UapV4iSdMNpehmNz5V0EtiyKcFzNo6N6eTVkdV5BUpAMDMBDJxHGdRY1mlMhJy4bwFnHw2omsrzYIW7OJgpLv91phFv9ovNPodiES/s640/Pete+Graph.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I guess it is safe to say throughout the week I read every Pete book I could get my hands on and they loved every one of them. We sang a lot too! Math was so much fun this week and we learned about pie graphs and that we could draw conclusions from them and answer questions. I know I will look forward to working on more pie graphs with larger numbers in the future. <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Kinder Friends,<br />
Flexible grouping has been on my mind since late last year. In the spring I was able to try several group strategies with my easy going class. I liked the idea and I learned it was not only engaging but highly motivational for my students. I was even able to branch out and try flexible grouping with a bilingual class and the results were the same...we loved it. We used flexible grouping mostly in math and science last year. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzkyciIwxi4JmOnM11RYNoJhstbLwmufM9J_hyphenhyphenHjqYl8bwQZRd0fiZxFBVl425TwdajvtZS3JInOVMuecOrpq7SXOzp8fFNPHCKyVVko7YBmwHkTEOVB9XWsT3AXmi5jslrANUSmix9vrM/s1600/Grouping+Pencils+7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjzkyciIwxi4JmOnM11RYNoJhstbLwmufM9J_hyphenhyphenHjqYl8bwQZRd0fiZxFBVl425TwdajvtZS3JInOVMuecOrpq7SXOzp8fFNPHCKyVVko7YBmwHkTEOVB9XWsT3AXmi5jslrANUSmix9vrM/s400/Grouping+Pencils+7.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
But this year I wanted to use this grouping strategy a little more and try some new things. I knew from experience that when I started in the spring last year I had already established many things in the classroom that made trying different strategies easy. Since I wanted to try flexible grouping this year at the beginning of the year I wanted something that would be simple to understand and easy to use. As I was on an internet search I came across these.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCqbnjbrZVpWY7C-SYfWJRjeCyfFV7Ry6RKxY1rUkg0ylYfSLbs9jYnsoQVnGwjQI_ofCfJy4QdHTUdbgfTxsKpZOzMgTPpvhbnaSIH9fi-um4ZxFh9TzDzsoaCWN7rke1Da1E-k5QkuHh/s1600/Grouping+Pencils+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCqbnjbrZVpWY7C-SYfWJRjeCyfFV7Ry6RKxY1rUkg0ylYfSLbs9jYnsoQVnGwjQI_ofCfJy4QdHTUdbgfTxsKpZOzMgTPpvhbnaSIH9fi-um4ZxFh9TzDzsoaCWN7rke1Da1E-k5QkuHh/s400/Grouping+Pencils+6.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
I knew when I found these that these would be the perfect start to my flexible grouping because they are simple to use. These are from Learning Resources. I bought them on Amazon cheaper than buying them direct and I paid no shipping since I am a prime member. I ordered them late on a Friday after ten days in school because I was thinking my class was ready to give it a try. I am excited that I have them in my hands on Sunday ready to take into the classroom this week and put them to work. I love that about Amazon Prime. <br />
<b><i><span style="color: blue; font-size: x-large;">So, how am I going to use them?</span></i></b><br />
<span style="color: black;">In the beginning of the year the children can get familiar with them by selecting a stick and having them group themselves together and answer simple questions or even introduce themselves to each other. These can be used as a grouping tool for those first day ice breakers and you could establish flexible groupings from the first day of school...<b><i>I love that! </i></b></span><br />

<b><i></i></b>The pencils can be grouped in a few simple ways. Cooperative groups can be grouped together by color, shape or number. It is simple and I especially love that at the beginning of the year. You can determine how the groups will be grouped or you can also allow the class to determine the grouping. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihtqdRjtxGIEAtNwqAQXgMxYaZn1WKUfC4GtVAYib_eeOw2y9nhhRZB32UMhxePyAWi3X6spfnEwfZPqBK3yZ8WWPvkYb-FBQUZkZG-JFR8-YoHdKKnyFeEQ_ejtWOMrekvSW7lLck_Vsm/s1600/Grouping+Pencils+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEihtqdRjtxGIEAtNwqAQXgMxYaZn1WKUfC4GtVAYib_eeOw2y9nhhRZB32UMhxePyAWi3X6spfnEwfZPqBK3yZ8WWPvkYb-FBQUZkZG-JFR8-YoHdKKnyFeEQ_ejtWOMrekvSW7lLck_Vsm/s640/Grouping+Pencils+2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
These pencils are made of think plastic and are very durable. These will last a long time and will survive Kindergarten. You will be able to use these again next year for sure. Additionally, you could use these if you happen to change grade levels. They could be used as call sticks for random calling but you would need to put a sticker on them and then write the name of the student. The sticker could be peeled off at the end of the year. I like keeping them as is and not marking them because I know I will be able to use these for years to come! <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Kinder Friends,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As the school year approaches, I am starting to think about the essential items that I need to have on hand in order to be prepared for the year. Over the years I have noticed that the children that come to me need a lot of help in the area of handwriting. In the past, I have been able to get by with simple lessons and materials but over the last few years I have been faced with some serious handwriting challenges. For the past several years I have noticed a huge increase in the children that either wear or need glasses. Last year one third of my class either wore them or needed to wear them and didn't. In addition to that, I have also noticed that the children entering my classroom either cannot write yet or very little and if they do write their letter formation is poor. And I also know we have no formal curriculum for handwriting. Furthermore, this year I am faced with another challenge. Last year our prek at my school was cut and the children were sent to another school. The problem is many of the parents decided to keep their children home instead. So this year my classroom will more likely be filled with children who may not have had the benefit of a prek teacher or program. </div>

<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Handwriting-Letter-Formation-Slide-Show-Editable-2155962">Letter Formation Slide Show</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Based on the needs of my class last year I needed several different things when considering each lesson. Some children needed large print, some needed very focused and repeated instruction and some just needed a little practice. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzyhTW0ZPPvGVlz-hnZacmSKFq8Ob3fwx-6TmG_elrgRJ9MqbCJLY5Z7NC_hUvt1GbLSeup-26_DNfqt0f0NgPsz5iDqfZkDMd9kdSYOYPEUAiqMCjpBCP7c-0L1XSz4SemJDaRwsRWjy9/s1600/Letter+Formation.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzyhTW0ZPPvGVlz-hnZacmSKFq8Ob3fwx-6TmG_elrgRJ9MqbCJLY5Z7NC_hUvt1GbLSeup-26_DNfqt0f0NgPsz5iDqfZkDMd9kdSYOYPEUAiqMCjpBCP7c-0L1XSz4SemJDaRwsRWjy9/s640/Letter+Formation.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
With the slide show I was able to focus on a particular letter each day or week and revisit a particular letter as needed. I was able to save the original slide show, delete the slides I did not need that week and keep the ones I would be working on. We focused on letter formation for about ten minutes per day and it was needed. It did not take long for the kids to catch on. The blue dot in each slide shows the proper path of motion for each letter. When I made my personal slide shows I made 3 copies of each slide so we could see the path of motion 3 times. </div>

After the slide show focus lesson we all had plenty of opportunities to practice what we learned. We had fun with it. We went from weak handwriting to strong handwriting. I had to eventually create some large print handwriting pages for a few of my students who struggled. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Providing the larger format for practice really helped my strugglers. These would also be great in plastic sleeves with dry erase because they are large enough for the width of the marker. These pages can be found in the Handwriting Practice above. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7BdlxMxBM9QpX0Tew3UQm9In-yxjTYxbsZJBcYDExFpXPVfeZZTi9RdmYJbL9P-48EttDoqCPOaHVrO-Of4Lr86caBe8DTgZjuUuNsV_5_jLfpl4CpUy1S1m8jZf5R9bT_7lfaNi9I47S/s1600/Pointer.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj7BdlxMxBM9QpX0Tew3UQm9In-yxjTYxbsZJBcYDExFpXPVfeZZTi9RdmYJbL9P-48EttDoqCPOaHVrO-Of4Lr86caBe8DTgZjuUuNsV_5_jLfpl4CpUy1S1m8jZf5R9bT_7lfaNi9I47S/s320/Pointer.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I almost forgot my favorite part... One of my favorite teaching tools is my presentation pointer. I was able to walk around the room with it in my hand advancing the slides and pointing where needed from anywhere in the room. I found this on Amazon and would not want to start the year without it! So with a few basic tools on hand I feel ready to conquer and handwriting challenges I face and I know we will have fun doing it! </div>

Hey Kinder Friends,<br />
We are so close to the first day of school it is time to talk about the daily schedule. It is amazing how we fit it all in and get it all done all in a day <b><i>and</i></b> with a class full of students. Most of my career I had flexibility in my schedule and I loved that. For the last few years I have had a mandated schedule but flexibility within each block...thank goodness. No matter how you look at it, it has to get accomplished so the way I look at it now is totally different than in the beginning of the mandate. <br />
<b><span style="color: red;">The Literacy Workshop</span></b><br />
I am fortunate to have the flexibility to move the components around within the workshop and if I need a little more time one day for something I can use it. Even knowing that, I do my best to honor the amounts of time for each piece and make decisions based on the needs of the children I teach. <br />
<b><i>It is a balancing act...</i></b> <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="color: red;">The Math Workshop</span></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One of the biggest questions I hear and ask other teachers about is the structure of the math workshop. We all want to know what is going on in this or that classroom so we can tweak and modify our own workshop and make it better. I never really tire of talking about the math workshop. Over the years I have had a standard 90 minutes of math. The only difference in the last few years is that now that 90 minutes is not broken up by specials or any other event. My 90 minutes is continuous. No matter if I have 90 continuous minutes of math or if it is broken into two parts, I could find and discuss the pros and cons of both. The fact of the matter is that I have 90 minutes of continuous math that consume my math block. Knowing the nature of a five year old and knowing my time allotment, I had to make it work so that we are continuously moving through the 90 minutes and accomplishing everything. I will be the first to admit 90 minutes at the beginning of kindergarten is challenging to say the least. It feels like that block will never end and within a few weeks I always find myself begging for more. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><i><span style="color: red; font-size: medium;">What are the components of the Math Workshop?</span></i></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In my math workshop I include:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Calendar Time</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Focus Lesson</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Guided Practice</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Notebooking</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

I follow this format each day of the week except for my computer lab day. Having the lab day break up the week really helps me because it is just once a week and we look forward to it. So the rest of the week we follow the breakdown.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
The calendar time is quick and easy. The focus lesson is our current content. Guided practice is simply guided instruction and modeling. Independent practice is when children practice what has already been taught while I work in a small group. I usually have a transition planned that I am excited about because...I don't really like stopping! I need it for time management. In the beginning I use surveys and questions. We have another round of independent practice and RTI. And finally we end with Number Talks. <br />

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiADwfyhNY4BzB3exc3FGPrdxS5MR6Y-FfBbzEpqQ_uNH-M1OWsuBc8YKO7v3e5Xpoi6BR7lrj9zdkQIXiIYFQETZVyYEX2_Arzxv0PROdI8pfdywDy8_LBEUe5_0pXKngOOtRc-QkwQBj/s1600/Number+Talks+Dog.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="402" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiADwfyhNY4BzB3exc3FGPrdxS5MR6Y-FfBbzEpqQ_uNH-M1OWsuBc8YKO7v3e5Xpoi6BR7lrj9zdkQIXiIYFQETZVyYEX2_Arzxv0PROdI8pfdywDy8_LBEUe5_0pXKngOOtRc-QkwQBj/s640/Number+Talks+Dog.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
I end with Number Talks because everything is cleaned up and it signals the end of the workshop. Number Talks is one of my favorite components so leaving it to the end is motivational to...me!<br />

<b><span style="color: red;">The Science Workshop</span></b><br />
One of the biggest changes over the last couple of years has been in the area of science. We used to have a flexible schedule rather than a mandated schedule. Before the mandated schedule science could be integrated into other subjects and the actual time was flexible. It was a freedom I enjoyed for well over a decade. I always had science embedded into my day before but it was flexible and if I needed a little more time for something I had it. So naturally I was not thrilled when we were on a mandated schedule and science was limited to 30 minutes at best and at the end of the day. Honestly I struggled and struggled a lot finding solutions that covered the standards and left enough time for hands-on exploration. Sometimes what I normally would do in one session, I had to spread over a couple of days. Last year smack in the middle of the year, our actual school day was increased 9 minutes and that was added to science. I made adjustments and moved on. This year I now have an hour! In response to the added time, I now envision a science structure that will actually work with enough time for hands-on learning!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Kinder Friends,<br />
I can almost hear the school bell ringing. It is right around the corner. I can't believe how fast the summer just seemed to fly by. It won't be long and it will be the night before the first day. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqNpEVfSvEjRnJmlMe2gPrd5-SgJe1XTgzudwa7JkvcXl8yRJZHxc9-E1auSGXWjOk5Uwfyd0oROk35kFuHsS6TcFy9cqlpLiKwxc6k6XfwpNYTRfrLqfmANCtV7kLAaJuFaTyUbpQVRVE/s1600/The+Night+Before+Kindergarten.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqNpEVfSvEjRnJmlMe2gPrd5-SgJe1XTgzudwa7JkvcXl8yRJZHxc9-E1auSGXWjOk5Uwfyd0oROk35kFuHsS6TcFy9cqlpLiKwxc6k6XfwpNYTRfrLqfmANCtV7kLAaJuFaTyUbpQVRVE/s400/The+Night+Before+Kindergarten.jpg" width="398" /></a></div>
With all of the hustle and bustle of back to school shopping and getting the classroom ready it is hard to get it all done. There are so many things to prepare for the year that sometimes it is easy to overlook the first day. The first day is so important and you might want to capture it in a quick picture. So if you need a little help getting a prop ready I found this in my files just ready for back to school. It is simple to print and prepare and a great prop after reading First Day Hooray. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEghCtMPg4_eYHWgt9F76Tpt5wKNVMFrJczSkFMILj-sFVyqrPXuM9kEIBrKM8qNI3EKN3dRaE5cVkWj6errsVLVf0FKkkIKZ9Tr33rpFfOsVaDA-A-KKyEQa4fDM3S658KYMI0k9tQ0tCP9/s640/Slide1.JPG" width="640" /></div>
Just a simple print, cut, laminate and staple together for the kids to hold for their first day pictures. So if this helps you get it all together and ready for that first day...<b><i>hooray</i></b>! <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Kinder Friends, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Thinking about Back to School always makes me think of glue. I had my basket loaded with bottles just the other day and it seems like no matter how many bottles you have it just is not enough. So you probably have figured out that I use bottles in my class. Yep, plain old bottles of glue. It is what is on our supply list and it is what I get a few of at the beginning of the year. I have no fear of the glue bottles. I just have learned to deal with it. And right from the very start we quickly learn the expectations for glue.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><i><span style="color: red; font-size: x-large;"></span></i></b>After reading the book and having a class discussion the kids are ready to get some hands-on experience with glue. I make copies of the glue page on red, yellow and green copy paper and we are set for a couple of rounds of glue work. We practice gluing hole punched black circles onto the paper. We practice how to open and close the bottle. We practice where and how to put it away and clean up. It's a big deal. And we have fun with it. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Kinder Friends,<br />
Last year I had the best time in our Math Workshop. It was our favorite part of the day. As I was thinking about the Math Workshop for the coming year I couldn't help but think of my last sweet class. It is kind of hard to imagine math without thinking of them. So this summer I really wanted to work hard to make sure I had another year of happy math kids. I was lucky my kids always requested...more. I spent a good amount of time last year rushing home and creating another printable for a special kid request. I wanted to have more than enough on hand to eliminate rushing home to create for the next day and maybe rushing home to chart a few miles on an exercise bike...</div>

<span style="font-size: x-large;"><b><i><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Giddy-for-Graphs-2648688">GIDDY FOR GRAPHS!</a></i></b></span> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I swear I am not thinking about a graph or chart until school starts...seriously. But now you know why I am literally <b><i>giddy</i></b>. I am giddy with excitement because I don't have to hunt to find what I am looking for and have it tucked into a neat <i><b>not so little </b></i>file just ready for school. But I have to tell you about the books I am going to use this with. I found these books on Amazon and in my library last year. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUGQOpSdGqy04apIjRjGcbadp0Y91yzjo2RMEcPwfFVI_7bPiQw9uawI-Hqvi1Xn-WNi31p_e-k9lAFRGwriYBbykOnusQ6TfkLiAZv9Hh_a7H_V3SYWi5rRoEw7bAl492qb000kWKcFK9/s1600/Bar+Graphs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUGQOpSdGqy04apIjRjGcbadp0Y91yzjo2RMEcPwfFVI_7bPiQw9uawI-Hqvi1Xn-WNi31p_e-k9lAFRGwriYBbykOnusQ6TfkLiAZv9Hh_a7H_V3SYWi5rRoEw7bAl492qb000kWKcFK9/s320/Bar+Graphs.jpg" width="289" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You will be glad I told you about these books now. It might take a little hunting to get this one. But I swear it is worth it in so many ways. On the last week of school me and my TBFF literally packed these away in the most awkward of places so that when we unpack our rooms, we find them first. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I am super excited to start the year with pie graphs to five and comparing numbers. Somehow I just know these will be a favorite and maybe my kids will request a few more.</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYiFWyDePzfJDmImRKAHVX7ZpkC54FNV6uL-xOmdMgfxJENpZUeOUoBsSMPrXHtVpbYHSjmRyuY3kJaXDZOqXJJ80NhklXwsQChuNOz2MjXRKsJMACjUW2v_sdXuNgW7GzZOqp6t2jT_dI/s1600/Tally+Charts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjYiFWyDePzfJDmImRKAHVX7ZpkC54FNV6uL-xOmdMgfxJENpZUeOUoBsSMPrXHtVpbYHSjmRyuY3kJaXDZOqXJJ80NhklXwsQChuNOz2MjXRKsJMACjUW2v_sdXuNgW7GzZOqp6t2jT_dI/s320/Tally+Charts.jpg" width="289" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Because of my class last year I fell in love with tallies. I swore I never would but I can't really hide it anymore so I will run with it. You know they really are not so bad. And did we have fun in our math discussions sharing our data collection, yep we sure did. Actually we liked working with graphs but talking about them sure was lively.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSM9hPUifEQqzMxvkg3Ose7AY4oqcynE66AgS2b7VLr1iCAuXl5cL691JIhZsR_rcYPB-DBy4tHUgLPkZZpmnZJhsG4yzzwV-jp5-BkG8X1Kn2Lxmw9_oSeMtUSbbSNBsyQDNSity2RMKU/s1600/Pictographs.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSM9hPUifEQqzMxvkg3Ose7AY4oqcynE66AgS2b7VLr1iCAuXl5cL691JIhZsR_rcYPB-DBy4tHUgLPkZZpmnZJhsG4yzzwV-jp5-BkG8X1Kn2Lxmw9_oSeMtUSbbSNBsyQDNSity2RMKU/s320/Pictographs.jpg" width="289" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We ended our year last year with create-a-graph pictographs. The kids were so excited if they new it was a create-a-graph day. We got out our construction paper, printables, scissors and glue and we went to town. Creating large quantity graphs independently. And let me tell you if they requested a special one I went home and made it real fast. I know you are wondering so let me tell you why. The kids were so engaged and busy it was worth it. And I was at a back table assessing for report cards without an interruption. That alone could make me giddy...total independence. And they were always so excited to discuss their graphs when the Math Workshop was over.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
So many graphs...so little time. Now all I have to worry about is actually finding these books where I hid them! </div>

Hey Kinder Friends, </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It is hard to believe that it is this time of year again...it came so fast. As you scramble around to finish the year, I am sure you have a few parents to thank that have helped you make it until the end. Sometimes just a small token of appreciation can mean so much. This printable can be edited by inserting a text box above the books to add the name of that special person that has helped you this year. After printing you can dress it up by inserting it into a frame and putting it into a bag and it is personalized and ready to go. And in the bag I am sure you could find a million things to add to personalize it even further. It's just a small way to say thanks to the many parents who help us along the way. If you need a copy to get some quick gifts ready in a flash, just click on the link above! </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Kinder Friends,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We have been working on poetry writing for a couple of weeks. We started out by reading poetry and discussing some of the elements of the poems we liked. The ultimate goal was for the children to be able to write their own short poems. We spent a lot of time reading poetry and creating short poems together. Within a few weeks, we were well on our way to writing short poems independently. And even when this writing focus had ended children would come up to me with a new one they had created.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPkjKcTLu0827h256pFAbD3oUyf0WmlQXXKCLCPVioHNFgqI8LsWKccXQBEEh9aisVl0xN6ul5kYwPoZ0indijSCtDyCzEezp3JGpZjUdLNqvptisUyV5ZZL7A9Q0f7FU_WTyoFgb50P9V/s640/Poem+Pocket+3.jpg" width="480" /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As A Poem In Your Pocket Day began to approach in my school, I remembered that I had these on hand from a few years ago. For this mini school celebration we color our pockets and write a short poem on the back. When the actual day arrives, the children wear them on their shirts and if someone stops them in the hallway they read their poem. The kids are always excited to wear them because if they are asked to recite their poem they earn a snack pass. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
I was so thankful to have these ready and on hand as the day approached. I didn't have time to search or create anything else. Sometimes it is the simplest of things that get the job done and do the trick. In the spirit of Teacher Appreciation Week, I am sharing this with you so that you have them saved and ready to go next April for Poetry Month. <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
With Teacher Appreciation time fast approaching I wanted to give back something to all the great teachers that inspire and help me. I was thinking a lot of getting ready for the back to school season just as the year is winding up. I was copying and laminating some ABC cards and it made me think of a number card. I have searched forever to find what I was looking for and just never found it. So I decided to finally sit down and create on for myself. I finally have what I have wanted and needed for a long time. I can't wait to print these and laminate them and put them up for next year. I know when I see them next year I will be glad I <i><b>finally</b></i> took the time to make it. I can already think of a few uses for it. These would be great copied on cardstock and laminated and stored in math folders. Staple one on the math wall. Copy and laminate a few to be stored in independent math boxes. And a simple black and white copy for take home folders. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9EidI7nRYSd5zSxpi8cOfAB3_pF5ojUxDIfhyphenhyphenVLITgWV_XIE32LCY0sp9av71E_J2uVnZLx4OIJFSUqkJXndOVr5KF6FTd9GtHU9TgiUa52Qml4PJlspIZooaJ3clsM6RwaTvRrcQuzL4/s1600/ABC+123+Handwriting+Practice+Cover.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9EidI7nRYSd5zSxpi8cOfAB3_pF5ojUxDIfhyphenhyphenVLITgWV_XIE32LCY0sp9av71E_J2uVnZLx4OIJFSUqkJXndOVr5KF6FTd9GtHU9TgiUa52Qml4PJlspIZooaJ3clsM6RwaTvRrcQuzL4/s320/ABC+123+Handwriting+Practice+Cover.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
And as I was working on the number card my mind was also thinking of one more simple thing I wish I had for a long time. For so many different reasons I have needed a resource for letter and number formation that the font was large enough to see the proper path of motion that the children could use with dry erase markers. I decided to sit down and create it while I was on a roll and get it ready for the back to school season. Just getting the basics ready and prepared helps to ease the pain of the stress of a new school year. The font in this product would be considered large and perfect for independent math and literacy stations or centers. And what I love is that it is simply...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="background-color: white; color: blue; font-size: x-large;"><b><i>Handwriting Practice Print and Go!</i></b></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: black;">I just love that. And if I have a few kids that need practice with a certain letter or number I can send one home in a bag and a dry erase. Lots of possibilities for such a simple resource and the best part is that it is ready to go! Wishing you a great end of the year and looking forward to the next! </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Hey Kinder Friends,</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have to say this year in my class we are loving math. We ALL love it. And we are moving right along and reaching our goals. Before our break we were hot and heavy into decomposing numbers. We took it slow in the beginning and worked with objects and manipulative mats. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFOOst6llk-TnpdRpUQsP9MhhmGe11CR7bLRlMmaaw8KKF5pLvVp9LnmdtK_EZZ-IIiDv-dXvv-8lOB4oHKsbRQqJU3y9vdZzABAPiGMAG-j0-49MMaThpxX3e9WT-pVpOcDth7jGM53mG/s1600/Decompose+Picture+8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFOOst6llk-TnpdRpUQsP9MhhmGe11CR7bLRlMmaaw8KKF5pLvVp9LnmdtK_EZZ-IIiDv-dXvv-8lOB4oHKsbRQqJU3y9vdZzABAPiGMAG-j0-49MMaThpxX3e9WT-pVpOcDth7jGM53mG/s640/Decompose+Picture+8.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In the beginning, we all worked on decomposing the same number. We would gather together and discuss what we discovered using our mats. Our discussions usually started off like this.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><i>A 6 (or the number we were working on) can be...</i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It did not take long for everyone in the class to chime in with the various combinations. Using the mats, even the reluctant participant was able to chime in to our discussion. We noticed that sometimes we decompose numbers they same way as our friends and sometimes we come up with something different. You could see the wheels turning for a few of the kids as they were trying to quickly figure out just how many ways a certain number could be decomposed. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiriQD0WfPauXh7_XjHhi0Zd_LDgdPsy4JqdPzXpLDPXh0ai-Yw-k4v36YHAFCSnVJWxwxAv1VS38SP4Z09V_TI7zV9r9E-iPwyFX4BT5QiW10q69-CSwMoE9WGXxNGKufQhzEtpPxZGZe/s1600/Decompose+Chart+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiriQD0WfPauXh7_XjHhi0Zd_LDgdPsy4JqdPzXpLDPXh0ai-Yw-k4v36YHAFCSnVJWxwxAv1VS38SP4Z09V_TI7zV9r9E-iPwyFX4BT5QiW10q69-CSwMoE9WGXxNGKufQhzEtpPxZGZe/s640/Decompose+Chart+2.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our whole group session ended with reading a book. I picked an old favorite from the beginning of the year so that we could read the counting book and stop along the way and chart our understanding of what we had been talking about for the last few days. I was surprised to see the combinations that they remembered from the hands-on experiences we had. The light went off for some children as they realized that when two numbers were reversed, a new combination was created and they quickly realized that zero and the number they were decomposing was also a combination too! Charting our responses and checking for understanding along with our discussions, really helped everyone see the flexibility in numbers and how numbers can be made in different ways. And before long our discussion grew to talking about a <b><i>systematic</i></b> way to figure out all of the combinations of a number. So we moved on to talking about strategies and how to approach answering that question. And I was thrilled to find a new way to use and look at counting books...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5fXpdV4rLPgAqfr9TDLzuM-SVWNtzII4dnBKwb_u80Yc0iHkx0p-l_Xw_b4j5lig8UIdbeF7ZqfmIAPO-YQqoFqtAmRX3mZlkbuZbyybzJwyixTeahPePPFde7sKU-JVwVzcy8rVPsPAn/s1600/Decompose+Picture+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5fXpdV4rLPgAqfr9TDLzuM-SVWNtzII4dnBKwb_u80Yc0iHkx0p-l_Xw_b4j5lig8UIdbeF7ZqfmIAPO-YQqoFqtAmRX3mZlkbuZbyybzJwyixTeahPePPFde7sKU-JVwVzcy8rVPsPAn/s640/Decompose+Picture+5.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We moved on to working independently and working with different numbers. We used mats and recording sheets. And as the kids were finished working with their decomposing mats they were off to make math choices of their own. And what I love about my class the very most this year is that they always, always see things in different ways. I walked over to listen to a group of kids using some beginning of the year counting mats. And I was happy to hear their discussion. Just like earlier in the year they were trying to extend the use of counting mats to include greater numbers, this time they were looking at counting mats to decompose numbers. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBBztoUVcfgZEIFlkhIj4sb77jIVh37XuJlavQyAXUY3rt34EjIbEy4TY54PAclUxV37ebLuF6lhkcLcw7TKBytdw9Ix8X1xfueGbCW5LtXdcNRcXbnfgO4hHBFyRGfhyphenhyphenfkQ2mK9V8ArmZ/s1600/Decompose+Mats.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBBztoUVcfgZEIFlkhIj4sb77jIVh37XuJlavQyAXUY3rt34EjIbEy4TY54PAclUxV37ebLuF6lhkcLcw7TKBytdw9Ix8X1xfueGbCW5LtXdcNRcXbnfgO4hHBFyRGfhyphenhyphenfkQ2mK9V8ArmZ/s640/Decompose+Mats.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It did not take long for us to realize that we could actually use the counting boxes this way but we needed more counters! And considering that I have one million UNIFIX cubes it was easy to help them out with that. My kids have taught me a lot this year especially about looking at things in new ways and I have to say this new approach to using counting books and counting boxes that we all have is just about my favorite! </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Kinder Friends,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You can imagine things are in full swing as we gear up for spring. I am looking forward to the sun shining and a little more light at the end of the day. Inside the classroom we settled into a nice routine and things are moving right along. As the class works more independently than in the beginning of the year our small group time becomes a lot more focused. And since this time is so precious you have to think about preventing those distractions. You know they mean well but constant interruptions can be a problem from time to time. So, this year I was wondering what I would use to give a silent signal that would remind my friends to quietly just move on. To be honest I didn't want to make a sign and laminate it. I wanted something to grab and go. I had an extra lantern on hand and I decided to give it a try. When I brought it in the kids immediately asked me if it was from my camping stuff. It gave me a chance to answer their questions and sit down with them and discuss how the lantern would be used. We brainstormed a lot of different sayings and the end result is this.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="color: red; font-size: x-large;">If the light is glowing...you better get going!</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: black;">Which really just means no interruptions. And it didn't take long for the kids to catch on. You can find lanterns like this on Amazon for under ten dollars and in different colors. </span></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Kinder Friends,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Wishing you a Happy Valentine's Day! I think this year could have been my favorite Valentine's Day of all. It seemed like it was the easiest by far. I have to say our Valentine bags were my favorite. I swore I would never make anything with those accordion legs...ever. Somehow, someone changed my mind. The kids loved the bags and in the end I did too. I might even make them again next year. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh04wDkyJqhycBUrIcWPLxJ1W9dzOkOPSdQtKxRZ_ApjLc9pi4xBqJIuFBkI1HZWrZBcSF36lFDGJqSiLSem6g5j0GlegK3blmzFxdjpK97GfRMz0OARzAKRSAdB5LOy7wPILXOtQHFmQlj/s1600/Valentine+Cards.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh04wDkyJqhycBUrIcWPLxJ1W9dzOkOPSdQtKxRZ_ApjLc9pi4xBqJIuFBkI1HZWrZBcSF36lFDGJqSiLSem6g5j0GlegK3blmzFxdjpK97GfRMz0OARzAKRSAdB5LOy7wPILXOtQHFmQlj/s640/Valentine+Cards.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The kids had a lot of fun working on Valentine projects throughout the week to give to their loved ones. Just simple paint and paper and everyone was excited to have these projects to look forward to as they finished their work. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
I was sure glad to have this little reader on hand because it gave us a chance to review some sight words that we had been previously working on. If you need a copy of this freebie just click <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/FreeDownload/Valentine-Hearts-Reader">here</a>.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
We have enjoyed reading new favorite Valentine books and even enjoyed reading the old favorites. We were even lucky enough to find a Splat book in the library this week. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNTbbTX4OFDnatRjRQb8kGwainioddiAGIdPlfI6fjRiUEQ8FMhlmp9L-Itx1RszdiloCJW56BVDVONfzcQKbu4n_MAWMMe3sJGe3bOupOMdq-PuIZZJ6aJMkALWt07YYI4lZ4JCn9m5JH/s1600/Math+Notebooks+More.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="504" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNTbbTX4OFDnatRjRQb8kGwainioddiAGIdPlfI6fjRiUEQ8FMhlmp9L-Itx1RszdiloCJW56BVDVONfzcQKbu4n_MAWMMe3sJGe3bOupOMdq-PuIZZJ6aJMkALWt07YYI4lZ4JCn9m5JH/s640/Math+Notebooks+More.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My class even got a little festive when working in their math notebooks. Considering this is a totally independent task that I use to check for understanding of the focus lesson, I was surprised at how creative they each were. As they were walking by my small group table they were holding them up for me to notice them as they walked by. I swear I tried hard to keep working even though I really wanted to look!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
We have been working our way through our Math Fables book and talking a lot about different ways to solve problems and tools that can help us. It was nice this week to see some reluctant friends give it a try and explain their thinking. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuoQ4aH6XAGsXisEjo6ij_HSZFZSuhGAvTK8gtRlXjD_0ENLpK1mSmnUF2RoE4LvMbaR5lP_Hti0oXO36eg_Vc7xkf2aiJ9s9XB0zXfVTweeq0q4bZFjE0IDYFoR9z829hCVo4yeA8kI1Y/s1600/Valentine+Handprints2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuoQ4aH6XAGsXisEjo6ij_HSZFZSuhGAvTK8gtRlXjD_0ENLpK1mSmnUF2RoE4LvMbaR5lP_Hti0oXO36eg_Vc7xkf2aiJ9s9XB0zXfVTweeq0q4bZFjE0IDYFoR9z829hCVo4yeA8kI1Y/s640/Valentine+Handprints2.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We even had time to squeeze in one more gift to send home. You know no holiday would be complete without a painted hand print keepsake! </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
And envelopes to send everything home! All in all, it was a great Valentine week and we were able to accomplish our goals and keep busy with a lot of fast finisher projects. I can't wait until next year! </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Kinder Friends,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We have been having tons of fun in math. This year it seems to be our favorite subject and that is ok with me. I have had more fun with it too. Although there are several things to love about my class this year and too many to even list there is one thing that I especially love. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiqYLDQTx1yXU1v8HPB2-FGTkKEy9cHnF5Y_q1PDzxYXO20Hx__3-oGZymImZkKUCwpSeka2aF7sqL1mPHWyP5OgzeCS3pFIPQ_y1rQtlRSkxrM63BPFmGpnIfL0QDDBMedIIzuDyG3T_z/s1600/Counting+Mats.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="287" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhiqYLDQTx1yXU1v8HPB2-FGTkKEy9cHnF5Y_q1PDzxYXO20Hx__3-oGZymImZkKUCwpSeka2aF7sqL1mPHWyP5OgzeCS3pFIPQ_y1rQtlRSkxrM63BPFmGpnIfL0QDDBMedIIzuDyG3T_z/s400/Counting+Mats.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My class is a class of problem solvers! Recently when I was working with a small group I noticed that the kids had found some new counting mats I had put in our BUILD boxes. I could hear a lot of chatter and see some scrambling around so I decided to check it out. The kids were searching around the room to find all of the black UNIFIX cubes and at some point they realized that we didn't have enough for all the counting mats. Someone suggested that they start looking for white cubes so that they could finish the counting mats. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcZItKCxleaxg5w-GK-Yd1036-fy3SUn0n7PF0PXbYXFkmI440NdPdfW5_VxEsZEl_s0ZMYrD801v417drtzmJUfz5ltmHqnJBbmyPJEzokUNvvc640GgS0i6EmzEBr1CkpdRtEFielkn-/s1600/Counting+mats+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjcZItKCxleaxg5w-GK-Yd1036-fy3SUn0n7PF0PXbYXFkmI440NdPdfW5_VxEsZEl_s0ZMYrD801v417drtzmJUfz5ltmHqnJBbmyPJEzokUNvvc640GgS0i6EmzEBr1CkpdRtEFielkn-/s400/Counting+mats+2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One thing lead to another and this is what they came up with. Instead of just using counting mats for counting use them for story problem mats. I just love that they came up with this twist on their own. And I love that I have tons of counting mats I can use for this already on hand. I might need more counters and dry erase markers but I am ok with that. If you have a ton of UNIFIX cubes that are not being used have the kids bag them up and get them ready to go! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Kinder Friends,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
A new year and we are all off to a running start. I swear there has been no time to look back. With so much ahead look forward to all we can do is take the lessons learned from the past and prepare for a fresh start. I like the sound of a fresh start. It is a start that is fresh and full of possibilities. But with all of the excitement of new possibilities and a fresh new year to plan for it is no wonder we sometimes feel more like fresh squeezed. That is why I loved the idea of <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Little-Miss-Kindergarten">TeacherspayTeachers having a new year sale after we all have returned to work.</a> January 20th and 21st it is all on sale! <div style="text-align: center;">
The goals have been set and the work is well underway. We now plan with the end in mind. Some goals short and some goals long but either way they are...<i><b>smart</b></i>. As teachers we have individual student goals, class goals, professional goals, family goals and lastly personal goals. And usually we define those goals by one simple word. This year I define my goals by being...</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><span style="font-size: x-large;">Persistent</span></i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I may struggle with my goals.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I may adjust my goals.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I may surpass my goals.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I may evaluate my goals. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
But in order to do anything with any goals I set I know I have to be persistent. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Between now and my first short term goal I have three big hurdles in my way...</div>

So if you are feeling a little squeezed with all of that goal setting and being the super teacher that you are, I somehow get it. Maybe the Fresh Start sale is for you too! I am excited to pick up a few things that will help me reach my goals and pick up a few things that I do not have time to create because I am being persistent with my goals. Either way, join me and <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Little-Miss-Kindergarten">TpT</a> and squeeze a Fresh Start out to your fresh new year! </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Kinder Friends,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It is fair to say we have spent a great bit of time building a solid foundation for comparing numbers so far this year in Kindergarten. That time has been well spent as the kids have not only grasped the concept quickly but they have been able to apply that understanding to greater quantities much sooner than expected. As I was looking over their assessment data I could clearly see it was time to move my focus in other areas. The formative data also clearly showed that it was time for some of our comparing activities to move into an independent practice phase. As I was deciding on what to put in our independent boxes, I started thinking of what we already had on hand. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0IkEwBR6XI8xnbogHYW0oqKNO7t6kfdPPGoBkS59agm-Be6uju0UktjiIeQa8YRuGjBH6zoJgW0wXvo2F3ZGTcdamE75Qs2aiZZm1-jOGH_OP9s2vZKuLo9thsDg3U1UuPTXglsGaKDnz/s1600/More+Fewer+Less.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="237" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0IkEwBR6XI8xnbogHYW0oqKNO7t6kfdPPGoBkS59agm-Be6uju0UktjiIeQa8YRuGjBH6zoJgW0wXvo2F3ZGTcdamE75Qs2aiZZm1-jOGH_OP9s2vZKuLo9thsDg3U1UuPTXglsGaKDnz/s320/More+Fewer+Less.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Most of us have Roll a Dice games. I know I have one for every single season because kids love them and you can easily change the counting quantities by adding more dice. Considering we had so many I wanted to change the focus for these Roll a Dice games because we all can count and create quantities to 20. So we started playing our Roll a Dice games with a less, equal or more twist. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNpdw0H6J6T-TVrgJxtbYBt6yK6Ksb49kpMuCRL_W-C6WI83Vnpy__OVYiqqLGbWOJzcFOW4Hfbw0hyphenhyphenuYL8bI-gJnyGfd2Ph4BqcK6Fa4tK4Aa40cVMH35vakHeRqwJVj3n0vjzXzSuDTZ/s1600/More+Less+Games+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNpdw0H6J6T-TVrgJxtbYBt6yK6Ksb49kpMuCRL_W-C6WI83Vnpy__OVYiqqLGbWOJzcFOW4Hfbw0hyphenhyphenuYL8bI-gJnyGfd2Ph4BqcK6Fa4tK4Aa40cVMH35vakHeRqwJVj3n0vjzXzSuDTZ/s640/More+Less+Games+1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I think my favorite part of this change has been just listening to the <i style="font-weight: bold;">math talk </i>as they play and set up the game. I can hear the children using the math vocabulary as they work and I hear it multiple times. With a simple checklist I can listen and record any misunderstandings or make any notes to consider when planning. We use game boards that require 1, 2 or 3 dice and Unifix cubes in two different colors to play. We determine if we are playing to win with more or less before the game starts. When the board is filled, the children create towers, count and compare to determine who won the game. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Yes, it is that simple to take what one was used for just simple counting and use it for something with a little bit different focus. If you need more games just click on the image above to find out more. These are great partner games and perfect for sub tubs. You can make a set for your sub tub and leave instructions! What sub wouldn't love that?<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Kinder Friends,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It has been a long week of laughter and learning and we are moving right along. I am so lucky this year that I have a class full of kids that love the Math Workshop. There isn't anything they are not willing to try and work through no matter their ability. I have a group full of math leaders that love to help clarify anything for anyone. I must admit, it makes it fun. We have had a few <a href="http://littlemisskindergarten.blogspot.com/2015/10/flashlight-friday.html">Flashlight Fridays</a> and it did not take long for someone to mention Flashlight Friday...<b><i>math edition</i></b>. I could not resist. It sounded like fun. So, I created a Number PowerPoint Show so that we could have Flashlight Friday and practice some important skills too. We identify numbers from 0-20 in order and randomly, we count forward and back. All skills we have to master! Why not have a little fun while working towards our goals? Just download and play and you are on your way! Not to mention, this is perfect for a sub day. Keep working on your goals while you have to be out!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Play-and-Go-Slide-Show-Halloween-Numbers-0-20-2129128"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjnJPFSyPNocU6I40MCyovUO8VlIV33grMpPhmZmv2T5n7n_jKhnDxWwwwve5hCYhTDPzlOvNZnd8vuuEPGgdWJ_UHmrUFlsVIGrUvJrVGV4bRqF_PE9ewHdfq9Q4AjEQ21gBwvZY1gagkk/s320/Slide24.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
After we practice the glow from the slide show helps us with a little bit of glowing light. And the best part about <a href="http://littlemisskindergarten.blogspot.com/2015/10/flashlight-friday.html">Flashlight Friday</a> is that it is so peaceful and calm and...<b><i>quiet</i></b>. That light and some flashlights to share with a buddy and buddy reading counting books takes on a whole new dimension. Add some glowing spider rings and we are giddy with excitement! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Add some glow in the dark dice and some counting games and you are off to a great start! The kids tell me it's a hit. So, what are you doing for Flashlight Friday? Drop me a line!<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Kinder Friends,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Knowing the nature of a five year old and knowing my time allotment I had to make it work so that we are continuously moving through the 90 minutes and accomplishing everything. I will be the first to admit 90 minutes at the beginning of kindergarten is challenging to say the least. It feels like that block will never end and within a few weeks I always find myself begging for more. I had that feeling this Friday. I swear I didn't want to stop! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><i><span style="color: red; font-size: large;">What are the components of the Math Workshop?</span></i></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In my math workshop I include:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Calendar Time</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Focus Lesson</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Guided Practice</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Independent Practice</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Small Group Instruction</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
RTI</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Number Talks</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Notebooking</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="color: red; font-size: large;"><b><i>Breaking it down!</i></b></span><br />
I follow this format each day of the week except for my computer lab day. Having the lab day break up the week really helps me because it is just once a week and we look forward to it. So the rest of the week we follow the breakdown.<br />
Calendar 5-10<br />
Focus Lesson 5-10<br />
Guided Practice 10<br />
Independent Practice and Focused Small Group 20<br />
Transition 10<br />
Independent Practice and RTI 20<br />
Number Talks 10 </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOjprlb2XBE3x4iIp24G9og4JqraaViBcw3Z0xn87KGHYMQveQfqyHo2cRXSOPXr5rqo6E6zXbZpWQMOtfUp76XM1YJEFtXXpF7R-OVkzpVtD6ca8GOGJcpttpKtQRghxcZPBpa5JG2yJp/s1600/Question+of+the+Day.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="270" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOjprlb2XBE3x4iIp24G9og4JqraaViBcw3Z0xn87KGHYMQveQfqyHo2cRXSOPXr5rqo6E6zXbZpWQMOtfUp76XM1YJEFtXXpF7R-OVkzpVtD6ca8GOGJcpttpKtQRghxcZPBpa5JG2yJp/s320/Question+of+the+Day.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The calendar time is quick and easy. The focus lesson is our current content. Guided practice is simply guided instruction and modeling. Independent practice is when children practice what has already been taught while I work in a small group. I usually have a transition planned that I am excited about because...I don't really like stopping! I need it for time management. Our transitions have been surveys and questions lately. We have another round of independent practice and RTI. And finally we end with Number Talks. I end with Number Talks because everything is cleaned up and it signals the end of the workshop. Number Talks is one of my favorite components so leaving it to the end is motivational to...me!<br />

Hey Kinder Friends,<br />
We have been working hard and having a little fun just sorting it all out! And when I say sorting it all out, I literally mean it. Apparently there was a little bit of disarray in a few of our centers and we needed to sort it out just to make sense of it all.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGv7_x7ztXdFgAc1Er2Fjz2zYkPclpCx1kUO9HpZo2FSrSSyjCIIQLEfIqrjuL4HADDpYuxPF02zOWa8yF15pxWrneVC-45aVXm5_JPKiYrdhoSPQgoSOSOY2O-CluUxRXIO9NkNwP59C-/s1600/Sort+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhGv7_x7ztXdFgAc1Er2Fjz2zYkPclpCx1kUO9HpZo2FSrSSyjCIIQLEfIqrjuL4HADDpYuxPF02zOWa8yF15pxWrneVC-45aVXm5_JPKiYrdhoSPQgoSOSOY2O-CluUxRXIO9NkNwP59C-/s640/Sort+1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
We got right to work and hands-on figured out what sorting actually was. We clearly defined what it meant and took some pictures to help us remember this experience. It took a while to decide our categories and decide how we would organize such a mixture of materials.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVhfLqsb7w2zt2Tq7A7hLPncV9tJny_DXo96cr6kTf8jbptUnE3Y367kUA-aTBBWenqAItFBmzkM70CeBuEoK98N8TsorsRbenVxjAT6H1s1vmHdz37gwJmRjhBtL0zuvGdO8n8XXnMZuA/s1600/Sort+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVhfLqsb7w2zt2Tq7A7hLPncV9tJny_DXo96cr6kTf8jbptUnE3Y367kUA-aTBBWenqAItFBmzkM70CeBuEoK98N8TsorsRbenVxjAT6H1s1vmHdz37gwJmRjhBtL0zuvGdO8n8XXnMZuA/s640/Sort+3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Once we decided on our categories we got right to work. I think you can tell in the picture that we were moving right along and getting the job done. In our world this IS real world problem solving at its best. And the kids will tell you that they sure remember the experience. The pictures we took that day were used for our math vocabulary posters and everyone has a clear understanding of what sorting is and what it is not!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkEliMNGz8oRAk2AGJ7j1cPmq3iiAkAOyjZidFJSVl6Sds-rx4Q_0u7AiP_74zUDCybBY31AnoCAVONeWc5Iz9cm5Hk460QrFJOsutSCZG_Y2ziObEIpe2nqNasUaA7Sl6_azk-ewffhk2/s1600/Sorting+Math+Counts.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjkEliMNGz8oRAk2AGJ7j1cPmq3iiAkAOyjZidFJSVl6Sds-rx4Q_0u7AiP_74zUDCybBY31AnoCAVONeWc5Iz9cm5Hk460QrFJOsutSCZG_Y2ziObEIpe2nqNasUaA7Sl6_azk-ewffhk2/s200/Sorting+Math+Counts.jpg" width="196" /></a></div>
A few weeks ago we had five new students enter our class on the same day. It didn't take long before we realized that we had to teach the new students about sorting. I let the kids guide that lesson and they did a great job. I thought they did a wonderful job of being leaders in this endeavor and explaining the reasons for our sorts.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimjYUn86cKvIjnvhTVIbyvMdv4EUsjC6Bju4caTPCVouRcQ-jKucM2bvFCvMK7nN2QnrB-GDuHzhx_ocsIMF4xxGQptSwHLrniZFpIXab5KfDlYZJdgUru35iBMQQzet_VBbpWk7O_9fjx/s1600/Sort+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="381" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimjYUn86cKvIjnvhTVIbyvMdv4EUsjC6Bju4caTPCVouRcQ-jKucM2bvFCvMK7nN2QnrB-GDuHzhx_ocsIMF4xxGQptSwHLrniZFpIXab5KfDlYZJdgUru35iBMQQzet_VBbpWk7O_9fjx/s400/Sort+6.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
We have also spent a lot of time sorting different things in different ways. We have sorted letters, shapes, names and had time for some conceptual sorts too. All of these experiences have enabled us to be able to sort independently and describe our sorts. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBIc4Nqdom9ADca3c0bNrSlUL2cvL5m3eYvBUYZeumbGTkgQJi5ZTceBWCVJWSpFUxDZvhL3BIKNICAMzJ43W_fXeEfHl63DcTqG0Pu2ySz8Fy1sa1nI0m-ITuItoX6v3y-HukpvGFAH4r/s1600/Sort+7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="351" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiBIc4Nqdom9ADca3c0bNrSlUL2cvL5m3eYvBUYZeumbGTkgQJi5ZTceBWCVJWSpFUxDZvhL3BIKNICAMzJ43W_fXeEfHl63DcTqG0Pu2ySz8Fy1sa1nI0m-ITuItoX6v3y-HukpvGFAH4r/s400/Sort+7.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And after all of this the kids are now coming to me with ideas of things to sort. So, I guess we sorted it all out and can't wait for more! </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Hey Kinder Friends,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We finally made it to the end of the week and it sure was a week filled with a lot of learning and laughter. To say I am a little bit giddy with a newly installed piece of technology is probably and understatement. We have used it for so many things this week that I finally noticed just how dark my room is when the lights are not on. It had me thinking...What about Flashlight Friday? It sure has been a while since I have had flashlight Friday. I mentioned it to the kids when I pulled out a bag of flashlights by mistake the other day. Considering they knew how dark the room could be they had a lot of questions about how that would work and how they would not be scared in the dark. And what I love about my class the most is that they suggested we make an anchor chart! Yep, you read that right.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn345hTN-xzXhVxQ58xSfHmDuZnyAaF3nyQ1pLY9xlmKizD9rNV7-LhloKsPx9gscpcP0_p9oGl1Op18bo678ERF8XQxTJEZDBjaVuiZQqUavf5T2jp8cGvAnGQutuMEJZy8VFToEcM735/s1600/Flashlight+5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhn345hTN-xzXhVxQ58xSfHmDuZnyAaF3nyQ1pLY9xlmKizD9rNV7-LhloKsPx9gscpcP0_p9oGl1Op18bo678ERF8XQxTJEZDBjaVuiZQqUavf5T2jp8cGvAnGQutuMEJZy8VFToEcM735/s320/Flashlight+5.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And I have a class that just loves to edit and revise what we have written until it is just right. So we write, practice and revise every single anchor chart...<b><i>every single time</i></b>. Eventually we will have it written just the way we want it. And trust me nobody is short on suggestions! This truly reflects a <b><i>shared pen</i></b> experience and I have to say I love it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSLwx5k41uZfBLncgUmRtjM4il2R-9Z4QU87Pyen2wGIiUn0Do17L1Nxrgm8AR-kKiWg-_8q_L8k7bQ_LmhuAK1rZhOLt23IURMdrzYnC-UH_fwdbZPaXCxYZtpV0bHzZkYdcEu3qJFL45/s1600/Flashlight+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSLwx5k41uZfBLncgUmRtjM4il2R-9Z4QU87Pyen2wGIiUn0Do17L1Nxrgm8AR-kKiWg-_8q_L8k7bQ_LmhuAK1rZhOLt23IURMdrzYnC-UH_fwdbZPaXCxYZtpV0bHzZkYdcEu3qJFL45/s640/Flashlight+2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When I promised Flashlight Friday earlier in the week I had forgotten about our ipad time. Lucky for us it kind of fit right in to the theme so we turned off the lights and got to work. Even though the children had grouped themselves in clusters it was pretty quiet in the room and very calming. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqorR8-WzUmhjtqtl-7a_Yz5Ud83TFIxNYCOakPkuPXc8n8dgJQzJeylk4UCfX3dcnNBBBVcDKTsSehDZdIiHOpiTi0uKsWKujgtcoRsZ0fpJB_eG7rmfHZT4kJKQ99J7fMxU26oY0uaUp/s1600/Flashlight+6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="554" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqorR8-WzUmhjtqtl-7a_Yz5Ud83TFIxNYCOakPkuPXc8n8dgJQzJeylk4UCfX3dcnNBBBVcDKTsSehDZdIiHOpiTi0uKsWKujgtcoRsZ0fpJB_eG7rmfHZT4kJKQ99J7fMxU26oY0uaUp/s640/Flashlight+6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We moved on to practice some sight words which was a big hit on the big screen. You know practice makes progress! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglzzP5XfyRLJ2eSk0o879zf8NLw8MADn9uv5vcBwW77UOcGujqCE2cvMHfMR9vPi0ZMlMaAfpTIuD8cdSsl0wjFF0BOvCA-4uc5PGHLcAQzxipknUqlbEMYr4R6A7OOj-aI6uJReRVL13c/s1600/Flashlight+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEglzzP5XfyRLJ2eSk0o879zf8NLw8MADn9uv5vcBwW77UOcGujqCE2cvMHfMR9vPi0ZMlMaAfpTIuD8cdSsl0wjFF0BOvCA-4uc5PGHLcAQzxipknUqlbEMYr4R6A7OOj-aI6uJReRVL13c/s400/Flashlight+3.jpg" width="355" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We ended our Flashlight Friday with flashlight reading. And it was a hit according to the kids. We already are talking about what else we can do for our next Flashlight Friday and I am kind of excited too! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3OxmR-Jti2nj3Rhvetv-PTZ8DQ8DMrntUZlQWUlJNFkCGavdnzlo_oZ2MjzjR2hEvFBLavNkd9zmcXapENC0Rus5AVX0nT4i-_luI8HV2Y6g-cEZEuPC5w3lZeraM8RWzvmUqkrSLds8P/s1600/Flashlight+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="308" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3OxmR-Jti2nj3Rhvetv-PTZ8DQ8DMrntUZlQWUlJNFkCGavdnzlo_oZ2MjzjR2hEvFBLavNkd9zmcXapENC0Rus5AVX0nT4i-_luI8HV2Y6g-cEZEuPC5w3lZeraM8RWzvmUqkrSLds8P/s400/Flashlight+4.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now is the perfect time to fins flashlights at a good price in the Halloween section. These were found at WalMart years ago and have lasted about four years. They were a dollar a piece and worth the money since we use them for science too. I have a flashlight for each pair of students because Flashlight Friday is buddy reading for us and everything is just better shared with friends! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Hey Kinder Friends,</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I have had a lot of questions about Counting Jars and how to use them in class. I didn't really realize that there would be so much talk about one of my favorite activities from Investigations. When I first started using Investigations in the year 2000, the counting jar was one of the first things I fell head over heals with. As a child I loved to count and I counted everything in my head to keep myself busy no matter where I went or what I did. I never told anyone nor did I see a reason to. The information I gathered through counting was really only for me or my amusement. So naturally, as a teacher of young children, I was drawn to The Counting Jar. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6ZbuQ-ZKV6d3QuuFv2ljGn2ASfUEOOAND_pXmg_ZXFUjVMiwIa20RPoj-nGRPuB23YDhA5A0VLW6FcJ4QaI1NDfnXf9LI4zLXvBjogQpsIF4Lt_7mJjNbFuz-o6FMzxqlNLgX-v-cbW16/s1600/Counting+Jar+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="293" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6ZbuQ-ZKV6d3QuuFv2ljGn2ASfUEOOAND_pXmg_ZXFUjVMiwIa20RPoj-nGRPuB23YDhA5A0VLW6FcJ4QaI1NDfnXf9LI4zLXvBjogQpsIF4Lt_7mJjNbFuz-o6FMzxqlNLgX-v-cbW16/s400/Counting+Jar+2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<b style="color: blue;"><i><span style="font-size: large;">How many is enough?</span></i></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First, I have several counting jars because one was just not enough because they are in use a lot. This year I have six. One counting jar would do but when you understand the value and longevity of this activity, I bet you really want more. The objects and quantities change and even the expectations throughout the year. When this happens, the counting jar comes back into focus and the interest is revived and new expectations are taught. Start off with what you have on hand and invest your time in teaching the expectations for the counting jar. Like I said, one counting jar was not enough for my class but one could work depending on how you use it. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b style="color: blue;"><i><span style="font-size: large;">What kind of jars?</span></i></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is the fun part of setting up counting jars! You decide how many, what kind and what size to use. You can use what you have on hand to get it started. Jars can be big or small and even tiny. Gather materials from the class to put inside the jars so that you always have replenishment materials if needed. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><i><span style="color: blue; font-size: large;">What the counting jar is and what it is not!</span></i></b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The counting jar is not an estimation jar and has nothing to do with estimation. The counting jar is used for...counting. It provides repeated opportunities to count sets of objects, create sets of objects and record quantities of objects. One reason I love this activity is because of the child recorded component of the counting jar activity. The recordings become the cornerstone during our class meetings as we discuss what we discovered in the counting jars, what we observed other children doing and what we will try next time. We work on learning the expectations as a group before the counting jar finally becomes a choice. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b style="color: blue;"><i><span style="font-size: large;">How do you start using the counting jar?</span></i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In the beginning I model using the counting jar. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><i><span style="color: red;">I model the task and I model good counting strategies</span></i></b>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As I model the task I am modeling and talking about efficient counting strategies. I begin the discussion of counting strategies with organizing the count. Once the children have experience with organizing the count and counting, I let the children guide the discussion and add to different counting strategies. These sessions take several days and each time I model the task and discuss effective counting strategies. Soon the children will be modeling the task and we will be discussing the strategies we observed the model child using. And finally, the children will be working with the jars independently. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4PmOb3pt0tUAlRycVGKvZN_hXYY9SXQ4tGi2FJyYy-4XnkDhAgMETzTjTscnT9i4g0_wU17lVh-wcBVMXDENwl3eVYsbmxMRaKHWxbS_vO-vzeS2KiikuVo_9CUCCYqDtPHJgpG2Zae-Z/s1600/Counting+Jar+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4PmOb3pt0tUAlRycVGKvZN_hXYY9SXQ4tGi2FJyYy-4XnkDhAgMETzTjTscnT9i4g0_wU17lVh-wcBVMXDENwl3eVYsbmxMRaKHWxbS_vO-vzeS2KiikuVo_9CUCCYqDtPHJgpG2Zae-Z/s400/Counting+Jar+3.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b style="color: blue;"><i><span style="font-size: large;">How do the children record?</span></i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We record our findings in our math notebook because that is something readily available in our classroom and requires no extra copies. The children use the jars independently and gather the materials on their own after plenty of modeling and guided practice. Children can record their findings in pictures, numbers and words. How a child records his/her representation of the jar also becomes a focus lesson in itself. In the picture above the children had practiced the parts of the routine they knew and we had been discussing the recording of what was in the jar. The mini poster above captured the count the children recorded and provided a number line for those children who didn't know how to write the number.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN80aKBMk5Q6ezabdZ20n8-_7fcNgl-Hz9B2zXVCxIg9fWyf1e7RxjtwaUvlSwtTUtrjQLp9Bs5MAXVNUij7HItH-IFOIwu0FWwJvgEOIgXKlnBhtJCzat3sWsLwubaAFH1Hw4uCtzBjRn/s1600/Counting+Jar+Recording+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN80aKBMk5Q6ezabdZ20n8-_7fcNgl-Hz9B2zXVCxIg9fWyf1e7RxjtwaUvlSwtTUtrjQLp9Bs5MAXVNUij7HItH-IFOIwu0FWwJvgEOIgXKlnBhtJCzat3sWsLwubaAFH1Hw4uCtzBjRn/s400/Counting+Jar+Recording+2.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
These are the first attempts of recording the contents of the counting jar. Children record using pictures, numbers and words. I honestly think these are some of the best first attempts I have ever had. I really believe these recordings reflect that the task was modeled enough and the expectations were made clear. And it reflects that I didn't release the kids too soon which is something that I always have to work on and keep in mind! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><i><span style="color: blue; font-size: large;">How often do you use counting jars?</span></i></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
During our math block counting jars are a choice among other choices. Children need multiple opportunities to count sets, create sets and record quantities. I like to offer the choice of multiple jars to choose from because the jars are always available. What I have discovered is that children have a favorite jar and really like to recount their favorite. If an item is missing out of a jar they can't wait to tell you! If you notice that children are not choosing counting jars, just change what is inside! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="font-family: inherit;">Children become independent after I have modeled the expectations several times and after I have supported and guided them as they practiced. When they become independent with the task they will have an anchor chart to remind them of the expectations.</span>I created this visual after we had several <b><i><span style="color: blue;">teacher directed</span></i></b> sessions with our counting jar and after we had created a class chart. I did this for a few reasons. I modified it slightly from Investigations and our class created chart is well written on, redefined and used. This serves as an anchor chart that remains posted. It helps to remind the children the steps and expectations when they begin working independently, It is posted near the counting jars. It demonstrates the steps and expectations as they are now. It can change and grow throughout the year because our thinking and understanding changes and grows throughout the year. Ultimately it will change as our focus changes. </div>

Over the years I have noticed that children tend to want to skip step 2 when they are working independently. Making an equivalent set is an integral part of the counting jar, so it is on the chart and it always reminds me that math is so much more than the final step or a correct answer even when you are five.</div>
