continuing with the same house we showed you last week for our Before
and After series. Previously you saw the living room, and below we have the
family room. This client wanted every room very livable and family friendly, so
that is exactly what Phoebe provided. She worked with
the existing walls, curtains, leather chair and rug, but everything else was added to create more seating. Phoebe also designed the
custom-sized large square coffee table. The new arrangement is better
for conversation, more comfortable and also makes better use of the large room.
With simple neutral, durable fabrics and colors, this room
welcomes adults and children alike, and that makes for a very happy client.

that anyone live without television. Whenever possible, I prefer to house them
in a beautiful antique, such as a linen press, which usually adds a focal point
for a room, height on a wall, and something much prettier to look at when the TV
is not in use. Below are four examples of beautiful pieces of antique furniture
which all house a substantial TV inside. It is important to note that the TVs in
these pieces are also situated at a comfortable height for the viewer. Take a
look!"

are going to do this next client before and after in three parts. The clients
are a young family with two children from Atlanta.
Let’s start with the living room!
This living room opens directly on to the dining room, so
it is really one continuous space. To unify all of the different sized windows
(look closely at the before photos), we hung simple pale celery linen curtains
with black iron poles on all of the windows in both rooms. The client had a beautiful oushak rug on which
we based our color scheme. She also had all of her dining room furniture, but
needed the living room to be inviting, comfortable, but pretty. Most young
clients always tell Phoebe that they don’t want any part of their house to be
unapproachable, and this client was no different. We recovered the client’s sofa
and added upholstered pieces in light, airy fabrics. She had a nice collection
of paintings, which always helps. The walls were not painted – we only added
the furniture, curtains and accessories! The curtains make the biggest impact
in the rooms, and certainly add some much-needed architectural structure to the
space. We were very pleased with the results, and we will share the rest of the
house with you in the coming weeks!
