It’s the dawn of a new decade and before we get too far into it, I would like to take one last look at the last decade. Okay, I’m pretty sure that it won’t be the last look considering the number of photographs and videos that I shot. I can’t imagine not ever looking at them again. Let’s just agree that it’s a figure of speech and move on, shall we?

I love lists. I love reading other people’s lists even if it’s just a todo list. It gives you a little peek into the minds’ of others. A list tells you how someone thinks. What is important. And then you compare that list to your own list and feel superior because the things that you value are far more important.

Feel free to compare your own lists to mine!

So here they are (in no particular order)…

10 Top 10 Lists for the Last 10 Years

Top Ten Books

Disclaimer: I didn’t read nearly enough books in the last ten years. It might have something to do with kids, work, and a lack of sleep. Yeah, I’m pretty sure that’s it.

Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser. This book changed the way we eat in our home. I make sure that we know where our meat comes from if we didn”t raise it ourselves. We’re far from perfect, but we are certainly more aware.

Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts. One of my all time favourite books. Roberts is a master at drawing the reader into his world no matter how far removed you may be.

Come Back by Claire and Mia Fontaine. Touching, scary, and has a happy ending.

Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen. An easy read that gives you a behind-the-scenes look at circuses. Real or not, it’s very compelling.

The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger. So much more than the movie. I guess I can’t really say because I have not seen the movie, but I know it’s better.

The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. An autobiography of a woman with very troubled parents. The fact that the children grew up with any kind of success amazes me and gives us all hope for dire situations.

Life of Pi by Yann Martel. Martel knows how to tell a tale, there’s no doubt about it.

The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling. I couldn’t possibly name one of the Harry Potter books without referencing another. These books caused a mania and got kids reading again.

Stitch ‘n Bitch: The Knitter’s Handbook by Debbie Stoller. Stoller’s frank and funny voice comes through in her writing and makes it possible for anyone to learn how to knit. Besides, she makes it cool to knit.

Culture Speaks by Russell Bishop and Mere Berryman. Finally! A book that illustrates what I think education is all about.

Top Ten Movies

I have watched very few movies, so take this list with a grain of salt.

Food Inc. If you haven’t read Fast Food Nation, watch this movie. Seriously disturbing.

Slum Dog Millionaire. I love that this movie bridged the gap between Hollywood and Bollywood. The combination of dance, music, and story line make this a movie I could watch over and over again.

Traffic. A frighteningly real look at the war on drugs.

Ocean’s Eleven. And twelve and thirteen. Irresistible.

Save the Last Dance. I have watched this movie too many times to count and still love it. It’s definitely the combination of a good romance/dance combo that keeps me coming back for more.

Walk the Line. The lifestyle, music and personal history of Johnny Cash. I was not a fan until I watched this movie.

March of the Penguins. Morgan Freeman’s narration totally makes this movie in the English translation. Loved it.

Into the Wild. I had a student that dreamed of going off to live alone in the wilderness and so his enthusiasm about the outdoors persuaded me to see this movie. Loved the idea. Hated the ending. It’s based on true events, so there was no changing the ending. But still…

Million Dollar Baby. Another movie that I have seen numerous times, yet it still breaks my heart.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Beautiful. That’s all I can say about the filming of this movie.

Top Ten Magazines

With the demise of many magazines due to a poor economy, I recognize that many of these magazines are extinct. I suspect that we will be really lucky if the remaining ones are still around in ten more years.

Harrowsmith Country Life. A Canadian publication that appeals to country and city folk alike. It is jam-packed with recipes, articles, and quick tips to get just about any job done.

Simple Scrapbooks. Sigh. I just loved this magazine. It just fit me.

Blueprint. It was so stylish and clean. Another one that bit the dust.

Real Simple. The title says it all. I don’t buy this one very often, but it’s a gooder.

Quilt Sampler. If you’re just learning how to quilt, this is a good place to start for easy patterns, good tips, and eye candy in the form of fabric.

Cloth Paper Scissors. I have never made a single project from this magazine, but that doesn’t keep me from dreaming and drooling.

Creating Keepsakes. A staple in the scrapbook arena. And for good reason.

Popular Photography. This magazine is brimming with inspiration, tutorials, tips, techniques, and product reviews.

Beautiful British Columbia. I live in a beautiful province and this magazine proves it.

Somerset Studio. Not only is this publication filled with stunning art, it also feels like a piece of art. The pages are heavy, the typography is gorgeous, and the photography is out of this world.

Top Ten TV Shows

Survivor. Rupert. Cirie. Boston Rob. Jerri. Colby. Sugar. Yeoman. Russell. There have been some memorable characters.

Grey’s Anatomy. Seriously my favourite show.

The Sopranos. I didn’t watch this show until this year. And then I watched every single episode. Loved it!

Dancing With the Stars. I love the concept of taking someone (celebrity or not) and teaching them to dance in a very short period of time. The transformations are amazing!

So You Think You Can Dance. What can I say? I wish I could dance.

Glee. A new show, but it’s quickly becoming an all-time favourite.

The Amazing Race. Uchenna and Joyce forever!

Ghost Whisperer. I am a big chicken. I cannot watch this show without my husband in the house, but I like it anyway.

Medium. Another show about the supernatural. Love it!

Oprah. What can I say about Oprah that hasn’t already been said? Not much. Her show has been an inspirational, eye-opening experience for women around the world.

Top Ten Websites

YouTube. If you want to watch your favourite show, learn by watching, or have a good laugh, YouTube has it all!

Wikipedia. If you don’t know or don’t even know what you don’t know…go to Wikipedia.

Two Peas in a Bucket. Inspiration. Plain and simple.

Ravelry. If you knit, you need Ravelry.

Flickr. I can’t imagine an internet without Flickr. It’s that good.

IMDb. Otherwise known as The Internet Movie Database. I go here after watching nearly every show to find out where I saw so-and-so before and what else they’re in.

Google. I am about 99.367% certain that the internet would crumble without Google. Gmail, iGoogle, Google Reader, Google Docs, Google Calendar, and more. So much, much more. Google rocks!

Amazon. Amazon has become more than just a bookstore. I often use Amazon for product reviews and also keep a list of books I want to read.

Etsy. A brilliant site that has united crafters like no other site. Mmmmm…Etsy!

Shockwave. What would this list be without a place to chillax? Quick, daily games galore!

Top Ten Blogs

Live From Tormville! I have been a long time reader of Sharyn’s blog. Her family stories and sense of humor keep me coming back for more.

Simple Inspiration. This family is an inspiration! Ten family members and so much love shining through.

Cluck Cluck Sew. So many ideas, so little time.

The Daily Trumpet. Brought to you by two witty and talented women who make up Ella Publishing. Ella is the new simple.

Just Be Blogged. The fabulous photog queen Tara Whitney and her cute, cute family lights up my screen with photographic inspiration on a regular basis.

Simple Mom. Crunchy living mixed with good parenting.

The Pioneer Woman. No list would be complete without mention of Ree and Marlboro Man. Love her for her stories, photos, recipes, and down-home charm.

Red Pepper Quilts. One of many quilting blogs that inspires.

Zen Family Habits. Another great resource for parents. Trust me, I need all the help and motivation I can get some days.

Bits&Pieces. She scrapbooks. She writes. She takes pictures. But mainly, she brings a smile to my face with her humour.

Top Ten Places I Visited

Disclaimer: I am not well-traveled and I make no apologies because I am a homebody. But here are some places that I really liked visiting… near and far.

Vancouver. I lived there for three years and learned to love the rain. Every visit is a treat.

Prince Edward Island. Anne’s land. You haven’t breathed fresh air until you’ve visited PEI.

Barkerville. A wonderfully magical place to step back in time.

Bull Canyon. My home territory. I just love it there.

Calgary Rodeo. Yee haw!

Alexis Lake. Looking at this picture makes me seriously homesick. I’ll have to see if we can swing a camping trip there this summer.

This fishing spot is my all-time favourite spot. It’s a wicked hike, so we won’t be taking Jacob there for a few years.

Gundy Caves. One of the best outings that we’ve had since we’ve lived here.

Disneyland. We went nearly ten years ago. I can’t say that I want to go back anytime soon, but it was so much fun. I went during my pre-digi era, so I only have film photos and I’m too lazy to scan one. But I was there, honest!

Our nest. I visit this place at the end of every day. It is my favourite place to be.

Top Ten Gadgets

Digital cameras. Film? Are you serious? I can’t stand the stuff anymore!

The iPod. I have only recently jumped on this bandwagon and I wonder what the heck I was waiting for!

GPS systems. What did we do without them? I’m pretty sure we were lost.

The Kindle. I don’t have one. Yet. Sadly, the predictions for bookstores are not pretty.

Remote car starters. An absolute must in cold weather.

Cell phones. Ten years ago they were big, honkin’ things that were a bother to carry around. Today, everyone has one (or two in my case!).

The USB memory stick. It astounds me that one of these little thingies can hold more data than my first computer.

The Nintendo Wii. Nothing makes you look like more of a dork than the Wii. But the fun is so worth it.

PVR. It’s still television, only better.

Top Ten Memories I Photographed

Kelly’s laugh.

My husband on our wedding day.

Watching Dominique tear up as she looked out the window on her first airplane ride.

Listening to Richard Van Camp tell the story of the Northern Lights.

The look on my husband’s face when we found out we were having a baby.

Giving birth to said child. No photos, thank you very much.

Sitting around Uncle Mike’s table while he tells stories. The man hates cameras.

The fire that threatened my hometown in 2004.

Moving day. Moving out of our trailer and onto our farm.

Meeting my boss. I didn’t know then how significant that moment would be.

So that’s all folks! What makes your top ten for the last ten?

As the first decade of the twenty-first century winds down, I can’t help but look back at what my life has become.

Ten years ago…

I proposed to my husband on his Momma’s porch while everyone inside was wondering if their cars would start with the Y2K bug looming over their heads.

I didn’t realize what it meant to be truly happy in a job with healthy, happy people who share a common vision.

I didn’t own my own living space and wondered if that would ever happen.

I vowed not to be a rancher’s wife. No cows. No chickens. No animals that oink. Today, we’re just missing the oink.

I never dreamed of moving away from family. At least not 750 km (466 miles) away.

I thought I wanted a big foofoo wedding with every person I ever knew in attendance. I am so glad that we went a different route!

I thought I would have a baby before I was thirty, but never made any real plans for when that would happen. Instead, it didn’t happen until I was thirty-five.

I thought having things was so important. Silly me. Now I’m trying to simplify my life by getting rid of those things.

I thought knitting and quilting was for grannies.

I had no idea what a blog was and certainly didn’t think that the internet would be such an important part of my life. The people, the connections, the learning…it hadn’t really started happening for me. Yet.

In the last decade, so much has changed in my/our world. Good, bad, and wonderful things. Let’s take a look, shall we.

2001 – 9/11. I can still feel the terror of that day.

2002 – The Canadian Women’s Hockey team takes the gold medal in Salt Lake City, Utah.

2003 – SARS and Mad Cow Disease put Canadians into a state of panic. As a rancher’s wife, I can tell you that Mad Cow Disease still plays a big role in today’s beef prices.

2004 – The Indian Ocean Earthquake and tsunami kill nearly 200,000 people.

2005 – Canada legalizes same-sex marriage.

2006 – Pluto is demoted to a dwarf planet.

2007 – After losing the U.S. Presidential Election in 2000, Al Gore wins the Nobel Peace Prize for his involvement in environmental issues. Gore also helped to organize Live Earth.

2008 – Prime Minister Stephen Harper apologizes to Indian Residential School Survivors.

2009 – Barack Obama is sworn in as the 44th U.S. President.

A new decade feels so much brighter and full of so much promise. It’s like opening a new book or opening a new calendar X 10. What really strikes me as I sit in my home at my computer while my little guy toddles around my legs is that I am so much happier than I ever thought I could be. Ten years ago, I thought I needed stuff to make me feel peace in my life. Today, I realize how little we really need to make us soulfully satisfied. A sense of belonging, a few talents that we have mastered, having some independence, and giving to others. That’s it. That’s the secret. This concept is one that keeps presenting itself to me over and over again.

So, as I step into the next decade, I am moving forward with the commitment to stay centered. I am focusing on finding a balance in myself. A sweet spot in life that lets me feel good and keep my focus on family, love, friendship, and the joy of learning.

I wish all of you a Happy New Year and hope that as you look back on the last ten years of your life, you also look forward to the possibilities.

If a WIP is a work in progress, would a quilt in progress be a QUIP? I say yes!

I currently have two QUIPs that I work on during my spare time.

Hah! If only I had spare time. With a toddler, spare time means throwing the kid in his crib, tip-toe running to the basement, and sewing like a mad woman for 45 minutes. Forget laundry and toilets… they’ll have to wait because I’d rather that Jake dig in the toilet while I’m trying to clean it, then play with my scissors while I’m trying to sew. Okay, not really. But you get my drift. My time at the sewing machine is precious.

First up, I am working on a pinwheel quilt.

I have something like 372 squares to make. So this is pretty slow going. It is for a double bed in our spare room. I’d like to be finished by spring because we’re working on that room and it should be ready by then.

And this quilt started out as a practice quilt. I had no intention of making a big project. I began playing around with this about two months ago after buying this template from Quilt in a Day.

I first saw this template on Allison Kimball’s blog. She made it look so easy to make flying geese that I had to try it myself. And this template is easy to use. If you want to make accurate blocks, you need this template.

So I started making flying geese with a few fat quarters and I was having so much fun that I used them all up. Then I laid them out zig zag style and decided that I wanted to finish this off as a 48″x48″ lap quilt. I went back to the quilt shop and bought a few more fat quarters and some extra fabric for the binding and backing.

I am anxious to finish both of these, but nap time doesn’t come around often enough. And it certainly doesn’t last long enough. Forty-five minutes and that kid is running circles around me all over again.

There are three days left until Christmas and yet if you peeked inside our house, you would never know. Instead, you would see toys, Tupperware, and books covering every possible pathway in our living area. It is obvious that a toddler resides in our home.

While it may feel like the Grinch’s cave at our house, a part of me welcomes the simplicity of Christmas with a little guy.

We have always had a real tree. A tree that my husband hunts for all over the country and then hauls home. It is usually six feet tall and takes up most of the living room. I always insist on keeping it up for the twelve days of Christmas, so that means needles everywhere.

This year, I decided that it wouldn’t be worth the fight. I know that if we had a big tree Jacob would be all over it and we would be constantly peeling him away from it. There would be tears and shrieking. Lots of tears and shrieking.

So, our plan is to put up the tree on Christmas Eve, enjoy it for two days, and take it down on Boxing Day. I know that Jacob will love little four foot high tree that I bought on sale last week. The lights will fascinate him and if he wants to maul it, I will take a deep breath and let him.

To me, that is what Christmas is about. Kids. Lights. Love. Family. And of course, a very important birthday.

So that will be Christmas at our house. We will celebrate the birth of Jesus in a way that our nearly-walking son can understand.

Merry Christmas!

When I last updated my blog, I was going back to work and I was a wee bit emotional about it. Since then…

I took my baby out of town for a week. It was for work. My Mother in law met us there to babysit. She spoiled my boy silly and I love her for doing it. It was so reassuring to know that I could focus on my work and not have to worry about Jake crying for his Mama. I know this didn’t happen because Jake didn’t cry in Grandma’s presence. She made sure of it. Like I said, she spoiled him silly.

I got overwhelmed with work. I may only be working half-time, but that little bit has been a huge adjustment for our family. Mr. Messy has to spend his days off, alone with Jake. This isn’t something new, but only a day here or there. Jacob isn’t used to being away from his Mama for two three days in a row. This transition has been hard on my little man. And me? Well, I am just thankful that I don’t have to haul that little guy off to daycare because I have a hard enough time getting myself ready for work. And when I get home, all I want to do is catch up on cuddles and sleep.

Jacob turned one. Did I have big meltdown and ask “Where did the year go?” No. I know where the year went because I savored every moment. I do wish that time would move at a slower pace, but at the same time I am so excited for my little guy. He is growing and moving and talking and making friends. He is such a neat little person that I couldn’t possibly wish to hold him back. I love watching him grow and feel so blessed to be his mama.

We had no internet for over a week and it felt like I was in exile. Seriously. The internet is my life line to the outside world. It was a strange feeling.

Like I was thrown back to 1988 minus the big hair.

Jacob started walking. This is such a gradual process that I wonder how you actually mark the day that it officially happens. Jake has been cruising along the furniture since the middle of July. We thought for sure that he would be walking before his first birthday. In fact, we were so confident that his dad and I each chose a day it would happen. Mr. Messy bet on October 15th and I chose November 1st. And Jacob continued to cruise right on through November with little to no interest in walking. And then in the last week it really started to happen. Jake started standing on his own more and more. His dad taught him to walk while holding only one had. On Friday he took three or four steps while he wasn’t really paying attention. Watch out world, here comes Jake!

There has been other stuff going on at the Messy house…like snow and ridiculously low temperatures and quilting. But that stuff can wait for another day.

I consider myself fortunate to live in a country that encourages mothers to take a paid leave for one year from their jobs to raise their children. I think that it says a lot about Canada and how we view our children and motherhood. But that does not make it any easier for me to leave Jacob all day now that that year is up.

Today is my first official day back at work. I have been easing my way into it for the last month, but today is my first full work day.

Where did the year go? How did I arrive here so soon? I was so careful to enjoy every snuggle, every moment, every milestone. And yet I can’t help but feel cheated by time.

Today I am getting a new office. A better office. A nicer office. But that office does not compare to my messy living room that is cluttered with trucks and storage containers and plastic kitchen tools. That office is pales in comparison to the space that my boy occupies.

How do I leave him for an entire day? Will he look for me around every corner like the game we play?

Did I pump enough milk? How long will I be able to continue pumping and breastfeeding?

Will he cry for me when he wakes up from his nap? I know he will and that thought cloaks me in guilt.

What am I going to miss? His first steps? New obsessions? Or (yikes) new injuries?

And the question that all working mommas ask themselves, “Am I doing the right thing?”

I love the internet, don’t you?

There are so many cool and interesting things to be found all over this strange thing that we call the World Wide Web. Things to make, things to see, things to enjoy. New things pop up every day that inspire me. Things that make me go hmmmm. Things that I want to file away for later.

I have discovered that when later comes, I cannot find the inspiring thing that made me go hmmmm. Where did I put it? Did I bookmark it? Is it on Delicious? Evernote? Where, oh where, is that thing that made me go hmmmm? Hmm?

Enter Tumblr. Tumblr is blogging platform that lets you post images, videos, audio, or plain text. It was originally created as an app for the iPhone, but took off in popularity as a microblog.

What attracted me to Tumblr was what the gals at Write. Click. Scrapbook. did with it. These ladies have made Tumblr look so very chic. The different contributors post items that inspire them in different ways. What you see is a huge collection of home decor ideas, craft projects, photo inspiration and more. Check it out.

I decided to follow their lead and create an account. I am using Tumblr as a place to store all of those good ideas that I want to get back to someday. You know, the someday that almost never gets here. But it might, so I want to be prepared. With Tumblr, I can post an item and tag it. I love tags because they make finding stuff easy.

This week I posted a bunch of stuff that I have been drooling over. Like this Christmas wreath and this quilt block. I also threw in a song and a YouTube video. Just for the fun of it.

For instant, easy access you can find my Tumblr page at the top of my home page under the Tumblr tab. You can also subscribe to Tumblr feeds. Cool, indeed.

If you are a Tumblr user, let me know. I’d love to see what you’re doing with your space.

This idea has been floating around in my head for awhile now.

When I was in primary school, I had the best teacher. Her name was Mrs. Bayliff and she made a big deal about every holiday. The things that we did in her class for the holidays are things that are still important to me today, much like family traditions. For the Christmas concert, I remember that we sang Away in a Manger and Silent Night. They are still my two favourite Christmas carols. For Valentine’s Day we made handmade cards for every other person in our class. I still prefer handmade cards.

For Remembrance Day, we made art pieces that had red poppies and white crosses on a blue background. And at the Remembrance Day school assembly, our classes recited “In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant Colonel John Alexander McCrae.

So as November 11th started to creep up on me, I thought of Mrs. Bayliff and that haunting poem. I couldn’t get it out of my head. The poem replayed itself over and over to the point that I was reciting it to my baby boy as I rocked him to sleep. I finally decided to just go with the poem and return to my school days to create something that represented the poppies and crosses.

So I made this. It has its flaws, but so did my art work when I was in Mrs. B’s class!

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I have been scrapbooking for about sixteen years. I went to a Creative Memories class and was hooked. But what really got me going was digital scrapbooking. The idea of creating a scrapbook page without physical materials fascinated me.

Five years ago, I followed a step-by-step tutorial that was written by Rhonda Stark in Simple Scrapbooks Guide to Digital Scrapbooking.

I wish that I still had a copy of that full-size layout. I ended up creating the page in a paper format and deleted the file. I only have this small image. As you can see, the file image is not of the best quality.

Today, I have virtually (no pun intended) given up paper scrapbooking. I still have a room full of supplies that I keep telling myself I will use. But it is digital scrapbooking that I love.

I love being able to find a kit that rocks my socks off and have it in my (virtual) hands without leaving the comfort of my home (and jammies).

I love that I can crop my photos to any size and shape without having to wait and see what it will look like when I get it back from the photo lab.

I love Ctrl-Z. Seriously my favourite tool.

I love that I can easily share my pages without having to scan or photograph them.

I love that I don’t have piles of paper, scraps, and tools to deal with. All of my scrapbook materials fit on the surface of my desk.

In honour of Digital Scrapbooking Day, I am offering you a photo album of your own. Remember the magnetic albums that held onto your photos like nobody’s business? Well, I recently peeled some pictures out of two that I had kicking around from my childhood and before tossing them, I photographed them. It’s so nice to go retro without having to deal with those sticky pages. Download here.
