Days 12 - 14

I'm not going to lie, I am pooped out and we still have quite a journey ahead of us. We did the last full day of interviews in North Dakota on Monday in Garrison, ND and Minot, ND. My perception, as it turns out, of small town and country is very different from people out here. Hearing people say they grew up both "in town" and "in the country" seem too similar for comparison. I had no idea I was such a city girl til now.

I've come out to my mom's home town of Turtle Lake several times over the years but I didn't ever really talk to people outside the family and they didn't ever talk about their lives as in depth as we have been with my mother's classmates. I am a completely nostalgic person and I love learning about other people's experiences and backgrounds. I am in heaven on this trip. But. I really do wish I could go and sleep in my own bed, smooch my husband, and snuggle my puppy tonight.

It was an especially long day today with the funerals for both my uncle Earl and cousin Kim. We were only able to attend one and since we were too far from Iowa we went to Earl's in Minnesota. It was a wonderful service. I don't ever really mourn those that pass because I know they're in a better place and I'll see them again, but as I was talking to Luke tonight I said, "I just can't help but cry for those left behind, to have to carry on living without another. That's the sad part. It made me miss you even more." And I think that's what is so difficult about death. It's not so much that they left, but that you must move forward without their shining face or goofy jokes or fuzzy beard to kiss you good night.

I'm really grateful to be spending all this time with my mom. Even if she snores like the Dickens. I kiss the feet of the inventor of ear plugs, yes I do.

Give big hugs to those you cherish. It's, oh so important. You can never tell someone you love them too much, not ever.

Day 1 - The Grape Vine

It's not everyday you get to see five empty double decker buses cruising up the grape vine. It was kind of like watching the elephants walk into New York City at midnight for the circus because their trucks can't fit on the bridges into the city.

It's just kind of awesome and unbelievable.

On The Road

I went through a phase where I read almost entirely classic literature. Except for Jack Kerouac's On The Road. Blasphemous as it may be, it was just too pretentious. Too hipster. Which makes sense being that it was essentially the start of the movement. I'm also probably the only person who hated Holden Caulfield. What a little whiner.

For the next three weeks I will be rocking out to more audiobooks than I can comprehend while stuffing my face with fruit leather and forcing my mother to pull to the side of the road so I can take a picture of that cloud over that field with that tree. Because, my friends, I am driving around the country with my mom for three straight weeks. 24/7. Will we survive? Will she live to tell the tale? She is planning on telling a tale. She's interviewing all her high school classmates from her graduating class of 1962. It's been 50 years. 25 years ago I did the same thing with her at age three. My only memory from the trip was sleeping in a tent in the rain, being warm and dry in the middle of the tent while my mom and her friend Joyce flanked me sopping wet. Classic three-year-old hostile take over. You can read her first book, Scattered: Like Chaff In The Wind by hunting it down on Amazon or going to the Library of Congress. Or asking me nicely for one of the few precious copies left in her collection.

We're heading for Sacramento, CA tomorrow and then up to Redding, OR the day after. On to Olympia and Spokane, WA then Coeur d'alene, ID. Then across Montana we go and into Minnesota where I'll get to hang out in Dalton again. Soon after we spend a lengthy bit of time in my mom's home town of Turtle Lake, ND and some surrounding areas. I love going back there. It's become this picture in my head of what life should still be like, quaint, friendly, no traffic or stop lights. We continue on to Detroit, Niagara Falls (the Canadian side for my 30 before 30 list) and then Palmyra, NY. Shortly after that we go to Redding, PA then D.C. and finally Nashville, TN, after which I will fly back to Vegas and be greeted with puppy kisses and husband kisses.

I will hopefully be updating the blog and facebook with a photo a day each. But who knows what kind of service I'll have whilst trekking across the U.S. of A.

And here is a slide I found in a silverware drawer today. Because a silverware drawer is a perfectly adequate place to store a solitary slide.

Don't say I never showed you a picture of myself at age 8 with my face painted as a dog, holding a wooden cane.

If you look carefully you'll see the doorbell on my front porch. Do not mistake it for a fire alarm box.

It is, in fact, a doorbell.

There's also a matching mailbox.

And yes, those bars on that window were there to prevent my brother from escaping as a teenager, not to keep the riff raff out. ;)

Desert Dream: Las Vegas Styled Inspiration Shoot + GIVEAWAY!

I have been wanting to put together a styled shoot for a long long time. So many ideas swirl around in my head on a daily basis. But when you're already married it seems a little silly to be dreaming up DIY projects and tables-capes for a wedding that's already happened.

I finally got my ideas together using Pinterest, because it's amazing for such things, and set out asking some local vendors if they would be willing to work with me on a styled wedding shoot with a mild desert theme. I was so fortunate that they all said, "YES!"

We all worked SO hard to make this shoot come together and it totally paid off! I'm so pleased with the results and couldn't be more thrilled to share it with you all. And on top of having everything come together so beautifully, Style Me Pretty featured it on their blog! This lady was jumping for joy (quite literally and much to the confusion of my mother). Be sure to check out the feature, here.

Our main theme was a dreamy desert feel featuring colored sand, colored succulents, and brightly colored embroidery floss. We were not shying away from color in the slightest. I think so many times a bride can think that one bold color is all she can do and combine it with a few muted or neutral colors. Not so in my book! If you've ever seen my house you know I'm not afraid.

We started narrowing down the process with a great invitation suite by SHE Paperie, all the inspiration for the day was based off of this. Right down to the hair. It's important to take all your ideas and focus on one starter piece to help focus the creative process. Things can get out of control real fast if you don't do this.

Layers of Lovely came up with the brilliant idea of spray painting the succulents to ombre in the centerpiece on the table. How brilliant is that?!

The DIY sanded table number and the ombred cake with sanding sugar by Gimme Some Sugar LV paired nicely and continued the theme of a minimalistic desert feel. Topped off with a few more spray painted succulents. Love them!

Our bride modeled a lovely Saja gown provided by the generous owner of Bella Bridesmaid Las Vegas as well as the bridesmaid gown. The bride and bridesmaid dawned orange shade of lipstick to coordinate with the orange tones in the table-scape and the florals. All the amazing hair and makeup was done by the celebrity beauty team at Your Beauty Call. And to top off the fabulous braided do, Pomp and Plumage supplied the custom fascinator and veil (Which you can WIN! Read more for details!)

We chose to have the shoot on the patio at Bar + Bistro at the Arts Factory in the re-emerging downtown Las Vegas because it is one of the most unique and cool places you can find in the city. Amazing, food coupled with a distinctly urban/rustic quality makes for the perfect location for any affair.

I love to DIY and the projects shown in this post will be detailed in the coming days so you can add them or find inspiration from them for your wedding day or party!

Decorating a home can be so overwhelming and daunting. I definitely wish I had the funds for a visit from Emily Henderson a lot of the time. But Pinterest helps like nothing else! Even going to my friends' homes and seeing how they have put things together helps. I have a wall of plates in the works and it looks pretty crappy right now but after seeing a my friend Ali's plate wall I am re-inspired!

Clusters of photographs and other artwork are a great way to build on an existing collection or kickstart a gallery of images in your home. Sometimes its a good idea to think of your home as a gallery. Look at each wall and see what will suit it best!

Love this space with the large painting in the middle and the four square pieces around it!

I love the linear nature of this cluster. It really moves the eye along a space. This would be fantastic on a wall that moves from one room to another to join the two. I like lots of photos in hallways but you want to choose small images for hallways. As a rule of thumb you stand twice the distance of the diagonal of the image. So large pieces are harder to view at a distance in a narrow hallway.

This is how my plate wall will go, clustered around a window. Another great way to move the eye from one place to another. Connecting them with similar items works wonders! You don't have to have huge images on your wall to fill up the space. Use larger mats for some frames and fill the frame with the images in others!

Best bit from their story: Whatever the case, he struck up a conversation with me after practice one night. We ended up chatting for nearly an hour, but when it seemed like we might be winding down, he told me he usually went to a dollar movie in Raleigh since it was so far for him to drive to come to rehearsal, and would I go with him? I was surprised, and flattered, and excited, so naturally I said yes. I found him easy to talk to. I didn't need to ask him endless questions in order to get to know him. It was refreshing.

DIY projects: My mother is making the skirts for the bridesmaids, and possibly the vests for the groomsmen. My family is building a backdrop with lights and fabric and flowers, I'm making the invitations, as well as the guest book, a friend of my sister's is making the jewelry for the bridesmaids, etc. Handmade favors, tablecloths, runners, centerpieces, etc.

Best bit from their story: After he swept my parents off their feet in Seattle when we visited for a weekend in February, he finally put a ring on it. It was the most shocking experience of my life, and it was absolutely perfect in every way. The ring is so perfect, and exactly what i was looking for. He even designed it himself! (talk about DIY, right?)

DIY projects: We are not having a cake, because I want cupcakes, and we are making all of those on our own, and they will be sitting on a cupcake tower made by my grandpa, and it will be amazing. We are also designing our own invitations so they will be extra personal and unique. The wedding is going to be peacock feather themed, because I had a pet peacock growing up, and they have the most amazing colors in their feathers. And my mom is designing hair pieces for all my bridesmaids that are in those colors as well as a beautiful bouquet. The rest of the decorations will all mostly come from things that my mom has already stored from other events that she made herself, as well as hand made lanterns and center pieces for the tables. My grandma will also be making my garter.

Best bit from their story: I sadly left for BYU Idaho at the end of summer and we broke up. We decided to keep in touch but date other people. During the semester away from each other we both kind of realized that we didn't really want to date around and would see how things went over Christmas break. We started dating over Christmas break and I stayed in Henderson for good. We dated casually and loved it!!

DIY projects: I hot glue gunned designs on bottles then spray painted them and then took off the hot glue to make a lantern, which will be hung in the trees for a backyard reception. I am going to make a satin flower bouquet that I haven't finished but attached a picture of what it will look like. I also have a tree with purple bird cages on it that the guests will hang cards on that have "words of advice" for the happily married couple near the entrance of the reception. To make the tree I took branches and plaster of Paris and put them in a flower pot and then hot glued vines of flowers to the tree and hung the bird cages on the branches.

Best bit from their story: We are planning our wedding after being together for nearly 12 years. We were the type to avoid the serious stuff, like marriage, until we had out son Chase. We both had a major change of heart and we got engaged last year, at Half Dome Yosemite... ! We are both quite quirky, outdoorsy and like to have fun. We hike, camp, kayak, snowboard, love concerts, traveling and watching movies. I am very crafty, love to cook. Chris is very smart, loves to play music and loves to eat all the yummies I make.

Best bit from their story: At the end of the night, as we were lingering before heading off to our respective rooms, Scott bet Jim that he could ride his bike down the hill faster than Jim could. This hill was enormous, and notoriously steep, and often those guys who considered themselves athletes would brag about how easy it was for them. Jim took the bait and Scott rode down first, Jim Made fun of the effort and bragged about how much better he would be. I laughed and thanked goodness no one had bet me! Scott got back, hardly winded and handed off his bike to Jim. As soon as Jim was out of eyesight, Scott looked at me with a devilish smile and said "I knew that would get us alone" and he kissed me. We quickly became the best of friends and partners in crime, and now we intend to spend our lives together.

DIY projects: The bouquet, the boutonnieres, the plant growing favors, Ordering a simple cake to embellish with edible butterflies and a home painted cake topper, making home baked cookie favors, I will be up the night before making appetizers and salads with my sister, our guest book will be wood burned by yours truly, our centerpieces, the invites are print yourself which I intend to schmancy up, even embellishments on my wedding gown and hand dyed wedding shoes.

This is going to be a touch race between everyone! Such great couples and amazing DIY!!

Display Thursday: Scales

This entire week has been a whirlwind of information, inspiration, and a lot of socializing. There are an unquantifiable amount of things I'm going to be implementing in my business to make it loads better for you and I, both. I can't wait to share all the gory details. And believe me, MegRuth is getting a facelift, from surface to guts.

My entire goal in being a photographer is fulfilling my need to make beautiful stories and your need to retain memories for generations. It's taken me a long time to realize that. But now that I do, it's better for everyone, especially you.

One of my favorite classes at WPPI was the influence of cinematography on album design by Amina from Stillmotion. I love designing albums. Putting together the day in a relevant and interesting story that fits each specific couple is something I'm continually working at and becoming better. Sometimes you can think of a wall in your home like a page in an album. Below the smaller images lead the eye to the main focal point, which is the biggest and centered image. Letting you know that it is the climax of the story.

P.S. Love the well kept stack of books next to the couch.

This is another common scale arrangement in albums. A center image could be of an entire family or the bride and groom. The surrounding images? Either details from the wedding day or individual shots of children, kids with parents, the parents themselves, the family dog, or even details. All those small bits around the edge make up the whole in the center.

The great thing about the scale of this image is that it's no centered. That uncomfortable placement actually makes your eye hover for longer because your brain is trying to determine why your so squirmy when looking at the pairing. Plus the colors (being opposites on the color wheel) working very wel together and lead to dynamic play between the two pieces.

How do those items relate to each other in their respective sizes and placement on the page. You'd be surprised how much it can relate to your walls at home!

I've been completely missing from this blog (and probably will be until next week) because I've been at WPPI. It's a huge conference here in Las Vegas for Wedding and Portrait Photographers International. I'm having a great time with new local friends and new out of town ones. One of my favorite moments so far was walking to my car and seeing this dude walking across the street. Creaky, screechy and all. I paparazzi'd through the trees on my way up the structure and snagged this. Only in Vegas...

Display Thursday: Kitchens

I've got some serious wall space in my kitchen that is crying for artwork. And since I'm substitute teaching in a Home Ec class today I thought it only appropriate at stick around food. Turns out high school kids are pretty awesome. Plus I know a bunch of them and a hug first thing in the morning is always a great way to start the day. So let's kick it off with a breakfast of champions!

And speaking of breakfast, I wish I had a breakfast nook. I love love love this space. Big full windows, a banquet and a tulip table? Yes, please. But the photos at the top of the wall, what a perfect extension of the moulding! Uniformity in frames and mats allows for a mix of artwork (perhaps kid art, family photos, or other artwork).

Who says you can't utilize the cabinet housing your fridge as a canvas? I love how this family incorporated bins, note board as well as artwork. And all of it is coordinated by shades of teal. Perfection!

Even though this is much like the first image in arrangement there is a lot more space between the cabinets and the ceiling. They kept with the color scheme of the kitchen even in the artwork, black and white. I've got a chunk of space above my cabinetry and I think something like this would be perfection. A friend of mine asked me when we're painting my cabinets white. This friend painted hers last fall and is also six months pregnant. I think she's bonkers! That or she was really happy I made her chocolate covered, heart-shaped, rice krispie treats! Probably the latter.

This weekend, was just perfect. I pretty much snuggled on the couch with Sir Luke the entire time. Blissful! Of course Ripley nosed into our laps almost constantly but how do you deny a face like this?!

This week I'm working on getting more details together for my styled wedding shoot. I'm so excited to share it with you in the next month. It's like putting together a wedding all over again. I don't know how planners/coordinators do this day in and day out! It's crazy!

This week several people came to my house when I was not expecting them and had to bear witness to the slob that I am... It was severely embarrassing but at the same time, eh. I go through crazy cleaning phases and then I just can't bring myself to put away the paper towels that I bought at the store last week. One such friend asked me what I was planning on doing with the two giant frames that are sitting on the floor against the chevron wall. And since they've been sitting there since Christmas and will probably continue to do so I thought I'd show you an EASY way to get stuff up on those walls of yours.

New start my friends, new start.

ONE, although it may be the loneliest number that you ever knew is often all you need to brighten up a bland office wall or hallway. This room is likely anything but bland. This is the seating area of a bedroom. The image is perfect for the space and being the one lone piece for the large wall the scale of the image had to be huge as well. Keep that in mind when deciding to put one photograph on your wall. The bigger the empty space the bigger that one image should be. A tip: cut out newspaper to the size you think you want and tape it up on the wall. If the scale looks right you're good to go, if not, try, try again!

It take TWO to make a thing go riiiiight! Do you see where I'm going with this now? Pairs of images are really great on a wall together, especially when they play off one another. I really think if you only have two images on a wall they do need to tie in together. Whether it be from the same shoot, or the same person or the same color (or black and white!). I would also tend to do as is done in this image and keep the scale and shape consistent.

THREE's company too! I love how, in this attic space, they use the wainscoting to align all the photographs. It's clean and simple and still makes a great statement on the wall. Plus I love that it creates some streamlined structure to the oddly shaped attic room.
