From Dogs to Donuts

This week I've spent a lot of time working on boring business stuff. But I've also been working a ton of a styled wedding shoot with some fantastic vendors here in Vegas. I've still got a lot of work to do and there are lots of things to put together so it will be a while before you see if but it's going to be amazing. I can't wait to share with you!!

We bought this huge donut pillow from Kidrobot last year from their Yummy line. If you don't know by now, I love Kidrobot. And anything that adds a face to inanimate objects is sold in my book. Luke convinced me I should get a Wii (I was very against gaming systems) by showing me how cute Super Mario Galaxy was. It was all over when I saw the bunnies with stars on their ears. Are you kidding?! There were stars on their long bunny ears!

I like cute things, so sue me.

Working from home means I hang out a whole lot with my dog. My smelly, smelly, dog. She was in serious need of a bath this week. Poor little Ripley Dog hates baths. Hate them with a passion. I sing a song every time she gets a bath....yes, a song for my dog. "It's bath time, it's bath time, do-do-do-do, it's bath time." The fear of God is in her face when I start singing that song pre-bath. And Sir Luke will sometimes do it when we're all laying on the couch just to freak her out. He's so cruel! But it is pretty funny...

Rip and I got off to a late start on our walk this week. But it turns out it wasn't so bad because the sunset was gorgeous and the Cheshire Cat moon was amazing. I love the jet streams during sunset. They're so pretty lit in the light of evening.

Display Thursday: Across the Board

I've talked lots about movement form floor to ceiling through photographs. Lengthening the height of a room. Well this time we're talking about making a room look bigger around by leading your eye across the walls.

When I saw this photo it totally changed my mind for how I want to display photos in my loft. We've got loads of art and posters from our various travels. We've got great plans to put them all up in the loft. I was going to do a collected look on the walls around the room in the same way I've done down stairs and in my bedroom. But I love how these move around the room on the same plane of view. The similar frames make the photographs the focal point and continue to move the eye across the room.

This beachy vibe is perfect for a seaside home or for anyone wanting to bring a little breezy air into a space. I love these fences that I've only ever seen on the east coast. I think they're super romantic. Keep in mind this is definitely a more casual feel (as you can tell from the half naked man on the couch, la-la!) and would not work for a formal room. You could even do something like this for a background of a treat table or photo booth at a wedding. Use clothespins to attach the photos to the fence for easy changes all year long! And because it's a fence there is no limit to how long your fence can be.

Using images to wrap a room can seem busy and overwhelming but building slowly and maybe doing a more narrow strip of photographs. I think this would be amazing to blend in photos of ancestors and current ones. Also, how much are you loving that light fixture peering into the photo?! I have a serious problem with loving light fixtures that I have no place for in my house... Follow the link and look at the rest of the house, it's amazing.

Arise and Shine Forth

As many of you know I'm very involved with my church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. My main role is helping mentor and support a group of young women ages 12-18 develop into the wonderful women I know they are and can become. Every January we have a night dedicated to motivating them to make goals and achieve them for the year. "New Beginnings" is also about getting the girls turning twelve and joining our group excited about the program.

I help in the excitement by giving a photograph to each of the girls that reflects the theme of the year. This year it's "Arise and Shine Forth." I shaded all the photos in a warm color to reflect the color scheme the girls chose (sunrise). I love these girls so much! It really is such a privilege to work with them each week. There is a great purpose in helping others. All the clergy and things that happen in my church are unpaid and on a voluntary basis. We have a dedicated group of people in my ward and I'm really glad to be a part of it.

Can you spot the new girls? They turn twelve throughout the year so we don't get to welcome them just yet but hopefully these photographs will help get them stoked on leaving the little kids and joining our crew of young women. Here's to a great 2012!

Another Weekend in LA

It seems kinda silly that I went back to LA a week after I got back from our Christmas vacation but I had very good reason. As a lover of interior design (as evidenced by Display Thursday) you'll often find my reading design blogs or watching HGTV. Specifically, Secrets from a Stylist with Design Star Winner Emily Henderson. When she came on the scene I realized that I do have a style, it's collected! Hooray, I'm not totally crazy for liking to combine every design style into one room!

So, Emily often talks about shopping at the Rose Bowl Flea Market. I've always wanted to go to the Alameda Flea Market but being so far away it wasn't entirely viable. So when I heard about the one at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena I knew I had to venture out. It happens on the second Sunday of every month so my friend Britta came down to Vegas from Utah and we drove back to Los Angeles together. It was a whirlwind weekend and I had so much fun, I can't even tell you.

We went to the fabric district in downtown LA.

Olvera Street, the oldest street in Los Angeles. It's super touristy but I love it and there's some great authentic Mexican food down there. And horchata, tasty, tasty horchata.

We parked at Union Station (for a cool $14....) and stopped to take a rest and people watch for a bit. Then hopped over to Little Tokyo to have a cream puff at Bear Papa's. There was a collection of around 100 people playing on their DS's and we figured out they were all playing for a huge trophy for Mario Kart Champion, amazing.

To cap off the weekend we ventured to the flea market, even though I overslept. I'm not often overwhelmed by oodles of goodies but in this case I roamed aimlessly for around two hours being guided by Britta before I finally made a purchase.

And if you don't believe it I wouldn't blame you because I barely do. We met Emily Henderson!!! I was floored! She is such a gem and was so sweet and chatted with us for a while. I was completely star struck and promptly bought a lucite side table right after and continued my serious endorphin rush.

So what did I come away with you ask?

I collect Dunnies, as a few of you are aware. They're art toys from Kidrobot. Different designers are chosen for each series and make a Dunny design according to the theme. I get one from each series. But if the series is AWESOME then I might squeeze in a couple more.... I have a lot, too many really. I like Kidrobot a lot, a lot. So I got two letterpress drawers to house my little friends so they look a little more like art and a little less like random rabbit toys all over the house. And of course I had to get that cute "S" when I saw it. Snd it was $5! My first purchase was that Kodak Brownie 8mm camera for Luke that had a sweet case to hold it up. We collect stuff.... And finally my RAD lucite table!!! SCORE. I can't believe it was still there at 2:30 right before the end of day. Plus she came down on the price because of it. Sweet for me!

Also, I'm thinking of sell some of my prints from my adventures on Etsy. What are your thoughts? Would you be interested?

Display Thursday: In the Bedroom

I have one wall of wedding related photos in my bedroom. I got a couple printed at my work back in 2008 and they're fantastic. The printing method is crazy and frameless looking. Sometimes I wish I had them downstairs so I could look at them more often. I centered everything around a framed poster I gave Luke our first Christmas together. Which was only ten days after our wedding... yes, we were crazy, CRAZY IN LOVE!

Ok so first off I love this bedroom. It's not tally my style but I can totally appreciate how rad it is. I am a sucker for red. And in combo with a fancy-schmancy headboard, uh, I'm sold. What I love about the photographs in this room is that they coordinate with the black and white decor and leave the headboard the main focal point. Plus that are hung in such a way that the sweet lamps on the side tables don't hide any of the photos, unlike in my bedroom... Also, that bedskirt, drool. I might have to make me one of those.

You can also forego a headboard and use images in place. In this space they chose to set them on shelves so they are easily changed out as the family grows. Beautiful, no? And P.S. that ottoman side table with the tray is fantastic. Who would have thought!

You can also keep it simple with one image lit by a distinctive light fixture. It can also act as a reading light for those late night book worming sessions (I need to have more of those). Plus you know I can't resist a photo of a dog. Isn't he cute?!

Do you have personal photos in your bedrooms? I have most of our wedding photos in our bedroom because I wanted them big but not too flashy in our living room. Also, how big is too big to print a photo of your dog? Remember, you love your dog like a normal person loves their child. 30x40? Too much?

Last year was pretty great in my wedding world. As most of you know I'm still trying to pick up speed when it comes to shooting weddings on a consistent basis. It's going a lot slower than I like but it could be worse. I met my goal of ten weddings last year and would LOVE to double it. I know so many photographers that started their first year with ten and are now shooting over 50! That's not my goal, but more power to 'em!

I was so honored to be chosen as a Wedding Wire Bride's Choice for 2012. It really means a lot to me that the work I put into each wedding is seen by my brides (and grooms!). They don't mind that I get a little misty eyed during the ceremony or when an especially beautiful moment happens between them. Nor do they mind me tugging at their gowns so they look like the goddesses they are in every photograph. And I especially love when they give me ye olde "5 star rating" on Wedding Wire to help bring more amazing couples my way.

I'm still growing and loving what I do. Here's where I get all needy. I need more advocates! I need more people telling friends and friends of friends that I photograph weddings and do it really well! I travel all over the country and I've got a passport so don't think I won't travel outside the borders as well! If I've already photographed your wedding and you loved what I did for you will you please give me ye olde "5 star rating" on Wedding Wire or Google or Yelp or my Facebook Business Page? And if you really want to go the extra mile you could search "Las Vegas Wedding Photographers" and click on my blog or website, +1 my blog or website and help me move up the ranks (unfortunately I'm waaaaay back there right now). I don't have a degree in marketing and I'm sure someone out there is thinking I'm totally bananas for asking this. But ladies and gentlemen...I've got the chops. I know I do. And I know I can make twenty couples super stoked that they hired me to photograph their super awesome wedding, be it big or small. I bet we could even get it featured on a wedding blog!

So let's give this thing a shot (get it, shot?! HA!). It's going to be a year to remember and I want you to be a part of it. I love you all for your kind words and support. I really can't say it enough or express how much I love you.

Oh and you know what else, I got a new toy over Christmas. A toy I've been renting the for past year. I'm the proud owner of a 5D Mark II, which might not mean a whole lot to most of my couples. But it means that I've got more control over the light on your wedding day! Control of light = AWESOME!

Display Thursday: Go Big or Go Home

I'm working on making my own statement pieces for my dining room. I took a photo of a turtle two years ago (I cannot believe it's been two years, time certainly vanishes quickly!) in Cancun and I've been dreaming of putting it up on my wall for ages. And I'm pretty close to getting my wish! I'm going to split the picture in to two pieces as a diptych.

So in the celebration of perhaps having my own statement pieces on my wall I am featuring large statement pieces in your home. There's always that wall that you're not sure about and one or two huge prints/canvas/frames/ are a perfect way to fill the space and draw attention.

I love this space in the entryway. Sometimes people think that you need to leave your two story wall blank. Because it's too far up. But I think this shows that you can do something with the large and high spaces in your home. And how great would it be to put a large family photo in a spot that you can see from above and below. Or go a step further and create a collage with favorite family photos and articles from over the years.

Sometimes framing those large images can have a hefty price tag. Hanging the prints on their own on the wall is an option that you shouldn't discount. It definitely has a more modern or industrial look but I think it has it's place in any home. You can leave them hanging freely on the bottom or affix them to the wall.

I love the use of this framed print in the dining nook. I love the square format in this particular space so it fills the whole space perfectly. The print fills the entire frame without a mat. This is what I'm planning on doing with my turtle diptych. I got my silver frames at IKEA and plan to make large prints to fill the frame. This is often the way photographs are presented in museums. It's really breathtaking and makes such a statement.

We Love Love: Karla & John's Wedding at Loews Lake Las Vegas

Happy Monday friends! I had a fantastic weekend in Los Angeles with my fabulous friend, Britta, in the fabric district and exploring the Rose Bowl Flea Market. But more on our shenanigans later!

John and Karla entered my wedding photography giveaway last year and were the big winners! John had entered and kept it a secret from Karla until they had become one of the five finalists. Adorbs! I was so happy to photograph them on their wedding day. As you can tell they are completely in love and were a joy to spend the day with.

In addition to being a beautiful ceremony this crew knows how to party! I have never seen a group enjoy their time on the dance floor more than these people. It. Was. Awesome.

Congratulations you two!! Here's to many many years of wondrous joy together!

Instagrams at the Getty

While I was down in CA for Christmas I begged Sir Luke and my parents to go with me to the Getty to see a couple photography exhibits I was interested in and see the gardens again. I love the gardens at the Getty, or rather I love everything about the Getty. Because I'm a genius, my brand new gifty from the hubs for Christmas that I planned to use to document the trip...had no card in it. Thus only my phone for photos. But I still think they look pretty dang good. Who knew?!

I love the leaf fossils in all the walls. I love to hunt for them.

We saw these artists, The Oakes Twins, working in the garden. Their work is the most fascinating art I've seen in a long time. It's really hard to explain unless you can see it in action but essentially they create a concave piece of art that is a live tracing of the scene in front of them.

Trevor is in the apparatus that holds his head in place so his head is the same distance from each part of the paper (which is why the paper is also concave). See how he's working on a strip of paper? do that trick where you put your hand close to you face, close your left eye and then your right. It's like your hand jumps right? That's essentially what they're doing. They're seeing the scene with their right eye on the right side of the paper. Then the left eye sees the paper and they trace the image in front of them. It's really incredible, the entire idea. I was blown away. The cards are really rad because you pull the sides and it goes from flat to concave.

Ryan was fielding questions while Trevor worked on the art. He was testing colors of ink pens for uv deterioration. Seriously check out their website. It's really phenomenal stuff. I want a piece in my house, like hard core. They're going to sell cards of their Getting piece at some point in their gift shop, but I want a big one. Don't you!?

The J. Paul Getty museum is my favorite place in Los Angeles.

Now all I've got right now is a dog I treat like my child but I had to share these great ideas for using photos in spaces just for kids. I think sometimes we get into a box where everything has to be juvenile. But putting up a gorgeous family photo or portrait of your child in their space can be fantastic.

First, I love the pallet bed, it's just rad. The two pictures on the orange wall really stand out. They become the focal point in the room because of the wide white mats and the white frames. Do you see the little creatures lined up on the ledge? Those are Dunnies and I collect them too!

This room is fantastic. The twirling wood bed frame (I'm sure that has an official name) is gorgeous. I want one for myself! Somehow twin beds in a kids room seems so nostalgic to me and I adore it. Putting the singular image between those beds joins the room together and brings in focus.

This room is way nicer than anything I had when I was a kid! Plus it's all from Potter Barn so imagine the bill on this baby. I have to say putting the oversized plaid on the wall and then putting all the frames super close together so the variation in color actually looks kinda like a change in depth. I am digging it. Plus I love a large collection of frames. Putting them over the bed like that really makes the bed frame seem huge!

We Love Styled Shoots: Maria Antoinette PUG Shootout 2011

There's a group I'm a part of here in Las Vegas of wedding photographers. We meet once a month (not that I'm able to go super often) and talk shop. Chelsea Nicole started it and brings in speakers to talk to us about various things in the wedding industry to help all of us be better. I was so happy when I found it. Yes, I was searching to actual pugs at the time (PUG stands for Pictage User Group) but I was so thrilled that the night I showed up was with local wedding coordinators. That's where I met a Juliet of Green Orchid Events. And now we're neighbors!

Anyway onto the good stuff! Chelsea put together a Marie Antoinette styled shoot with the help of some amazing local vendors. I loved how everything came together. It was fantastic.

I had a blast meeting so many new people out in the frigid coldness. My teeth were chattering like mad. It's a good thing I layered up and brought gloves. These models were troopers because it was freezing!!

We Love Families: Kieft Family at Paramount Ranch

One of my favorite memories of Allie is from our junior year of high school. We had chemistry together. Allie was so great in school. Believe me she worked for it but she got straight A's. She was a good friend to have in that class. Anyway one day I show up to class and there's a test...uhh...what? Yeah, had no idea and had no calculator. And whatever unit we were doing was impossible to do an equation without a calculator. She looked at the first question, looked at me, and just started laughing. It was ridiculous. luckily it was multiple choice so I at least had something to choose from. Once she finished she passed me her calculator. Are you surprised I got my first C in chemistry? I didn't think so.

Anyway ten years later, sheesh, she's got an awesome husband and an adorable baby boy. We got together on Christmas eve at Paramount Ranch near my hometown and spent the afternoon introducing Camden to the wild west. He is a serious baby, he means business. But I did manage to squirrel a few smiles out of those smushable cheeks!

Display Thursday: Holiday Decor

I love the holidays. LOVE. Everything is cheerful and warm and cozy, well indoors. If you remember I'm not the greatest with the cold. Growing up in Southern California will do that to you. I don't understand the desire for a white Christmas, but I'll take the movie anytime. In fact, maybe I'll watch it today!

Ok on to some photo ideas for your holiday decor!

First this fantastic lamp with a winter scene and some photographs is killing me softly. I love it so much. You can find lamps like this all over the place. They used salt for the snow. Cute!

I love this Christmas tree on the wall! Make it with photos from your Christmas card session or various Christmases past. You could use those removable hooks so you don't have to put new holes in the wall. Combine with ornaments. So cute!!

We Love Families: Hepworth Brood on Mt. Charleston

I've never been to Mt. Charleston so when Justin and Lindsay said they wanted to venture to the snowy mountain for their Christmas photos I pretty much jumped at the chance. Here is a fact about me, I don't own snow gear. As in last Christmas I wore toms in three feet of snow in Boston whilst shopping the day after Christmas....I was very wet and cold. My least favorite combination.

So what did I bring to the snow? Rain boots and a measly jacket. I did have knee-high socks on and a couple layers of shirts. But when I stepped outside the car into 30 degree temperatures I was not prepared. So out of the kindness of Lindsay's heart she let me don her coat that she opted not to wear and another pair of boots she had which were actually equipped for snow. Heaven bless her because I would have frozen had she not!

This was one of the most fun shoots I've done! I loved all the clothes they chose to wear too! Romping in the snow actually made me want to try out snowshoeing! Have you done that before? Is it super fun?! It just seems like an awesome time. Plus less digging down into the abyss of snow. Also, it turns out when you're wearing actual snow gear it's not so bad!

The snowball fight between Justin and Garrett was classic. Snow flying in the sunlight is gorgeous! Don't you think?

We Love: Brilliant Ideas!

I found this while perusing Pinterest this morning. Seriously people, are you on Pinterest yet? You should be. And if you need an invite just let me know. This brilliant idea is for the person who is planning a proposal. But still, it's amazing and a little "hint, hint, nudge, nudge" never hurt anyone. Right?

The groom hired a photographer to photograph the proposal and didn't tell the bride until she opened her gift the day of the wedding. So so great. What a truly special surprise!

I am all for photographing things of this nature. I love surprises. Even if I nearly burst with excitement and almost can't keep my trap shut. Almost. As in I do not reveal said surprises! Promise. And my friend Andrea Eppolito does amazing proposals. She'll help out your beau plan something truly fantastic. Having a professional their to photograph it is just he icing on the cake.

My darling Sir Luke did something kind of like this when he proposed to me in Fort Tryon Park in Upper Manhattan. We had planned a park day for ages. Upon finally having our picnic in the park he took the opportunity to propose. He set up his camera on timer and took a picture of the two of us. Sneakily he said he messed up and had to take another. Right before the shutter clicked he got down on one knee and proposed. We have a photo of the proposal but it's a little underexposed. But none, the less, we have it! Unfortunately, I can't currently locate it....boo.

And here's how we announced our engagement. Our park day photos. Second row first picture was the engagement photo we used for our invitation. I took it on my polaroid SX-70 camera shortly before Luke proposed. I wish we had done official engagement session. Because those are all we have.

Display Thursday: Very Vintage

I love vintage anything. My fascination grew from staring at photos of my ancestors all over my walls as a child. My mother grew up on a farm in North Dakota and continues to collect items that hearken back to her upbringing. Butter churns, mason jars, and other odds and ends.

The photo displays today all revolve around a vintage look. I love this hanging ribbon look. It definitely hearkens back to a Victorian era aesthetic. I also love that their is a mixture of standouts, framed pieces with ornate and contemporary frames. This could be used with engagement photos or wedding photos as well as family photos. I think it would also make a super cute photo booth back drop too!

This is another great way to use a collection of trays as wall decor and incorporate photoraphs. I love this idea. So simple but really great. You could modge podge the image for a permanent fixture or use my favorite craft adhesive, glue dots. The removable ones are great. I get mine at Michael's.

The stripe wallpaper has me drooling. You know I would totally try to do this with paint. But I'm not sure I have a death wish. It would take forever!! But I love it. And I love the arrangement of the frames around the convex mirror, which also adds to the vintage feel. So pretty! I also love that the images sit flat against the ceiling. Combined with the stripes it really makes the room look exceedingly tall. Mmm, hmm.

We See Married Love: Nicki and Tyler

Nicki holds a special place in my heart. We've known each other for six years. I can genuinely say that it is a treat to know her. She will talk to you and make you feel like you are the most important if not the only person in the room. That's how awesome she is. And only someone just as rad could manage to snag someone such as this. During the time I spent with Tyler and Nicki I knew they were perfect for each other. Both of them care so deeply for their family and friends. And that is what their entire wedding day was about. Nothing crazy or over the top, just a rustic and casual setting to celebrate their marriage with everyone they loved all in one place.

It was beautiful. The perfect fall day for the perfect couple.

After the ceremony at the Draper, UT LDS Temple the crew ventured over to Pizzeria Seven Twelve. That place was tassssty. I fully recommend it if you're ever in Orem, UT.

After our luncheon we headed up to the Sundance Resort through the Alpine Loop. I cannot express how glorious a setting it was to photograph these beautiful people in the rich colors of fall. Nicki and Ty chose the date of their wedding to coincide with dall. And it was an absolute dream.

The reception was held at the beautiful reception hall at the Sundance Resort. It was the perfect venue for this couple who had their first kiss and were engaged all at the resort.

Here's to many more years of joy.

Display Thursday: Off the Wall

A day late but not a dollar short! So, it's Friday. Not Thursday but you can still enjoy these fun and different ways of displaying your photos when you don't have room on your walls. Some people just don't have the space anymore. And I totally hear you on that one.

This is a great gift for anyone in an office out or in the home. A little desk calendar personalized with your family or wedding photos. I love the little addition of a graphic patter too. Super cute!

This cube is such a stunning display for a side table or other console table, or a more classic office desk. Pottery Barn knows how to do classy, that is for sure. I love that the glass can be etched with initials for an added personal touch.

We See Wedding Love: Jordyn & Joey

I adored everything about Jordyn and Joey's wedding. First, it was at one of my favorite places in Los Angeles, The Marion Davies Guest House. It was restored a few years ago and my friend Tamara had her reception there in 2010. Jordyn saw the wedding featured on Style Me Pretty and loved the location and my work and booked us both! Her inspiration for the entire affair was a bird invitation she found on Wedding Paper Divas. She collected bird cages books and other goodies at flea markets and antique stores for months before the big day. Jessie at Jardin Floral Design took everything and arranged and brought it all to life with his amazing florals. I was completely amazed with the entire thing. It was gorgeous! A sort of Anthropologie inspired wedding.

I think the biggest surprise to me was that Jordyn actually rented her dress! Can you believe that? It's totally amazing, right? It couldn't believe it. What a great way to save some money and still get a completely unique dress.

Another favorite was the donut cake. Jordyn didn't want to go for a traditional cake and I thought the little donuts were perfect. Personal and different from the common cupcake tower. Just some mini donuts from Krispy Kreme. Cute, eh?

It really was such a perfect evening and I was so pleased I was able to be a part of it. Having a great group of friends and family around make my job so easy and Jordyn and Joey had a wonderful crew supporting them on their wedding day.

Congratulations to you two!! Many happy wishes for your future together!
