Chelsea start this campaign as 2/1 title favourites. The signings of Cesc Fabregas and Filipe Luis have addressed the lack of central midfield creativity and attacking fullback play that dogged the Blues last season.

However, it’s the £32m signing of striker Diego Costa that’s bolstered the Blue’s title credentials. On the face of it, the Spain international looks the perfect fit for Mourinho’s Chelsea, a spearhead with the right balance of force and finesse.

Given the Blue’s recent history with big money strikers, many will reserve their judgement, but with little competition for his starting place and on the back of a prolific season in Madrid, the Brazilian will have a huge role to play in bringing the title to West London.

Many pundits have Burnley as favourites for an immediate return to the Championship, although it’s worth remembering that this time last year, the East Lancashire club were also tipped for relegation into League One.

Inclement weather could also dampen Denard Span’s chances at extending his hitting streak to 14 games, which would match Ramos’ team high for the season.

Span has a .426 average during his run after going 2 for 6 with a triple Saturday.

The centre fielder has five hits in this series, improving to 12 for 29 (.414) over his last five games at Turner Field. However, he’s 0 for 6 with three strikeouts against scheduled starter Alex Wood (7-9, 3.20 ERA).

The Braves are turning to Wood in the hopes he can help them win for just the second time in 11 tries.

He’s going to need some help since Wood is 2/3 with a 2.92 ERA in eight starts since returning to the rotation, and he’s been given two total runs in the past three.

The left-hander has allowed one earned run in each of his last two starts, spanning 13 innings with Atlanta losing both contests.

Admittedly, it doesn’t look good but it should not be forgotten the potential for lost time to be found again. England, therefore, are 7/4, a hike from the 6/5 they were for Southampton, while India are available at 9/2.

Justin Rose – 16/1

England’s Justin Rose will go into this weekend as one of the firm favourites. The 33-year-old is golf’s most in-form player, with wins in his past two tournaments. He bids to become the first Englishman since Nick Faldo in 1992 to lift the famous Claret Jug.

Phil Mickelson proved back-to-back victories at links events are possible last year. However, while Rose is a proven major champion at the US Open, he has yet to produce this form in the UK equivalent.

In fact, The Open has proved to be Rose’s weakest major, never finishing top-ten since a remarkable fourth place as a teenage amateur 16 years ago. Rose can’t be discounted, but at such short odds many will look for value elsewhere.

Graeme McDowell – 28/1

Having come extremely close to getting his hands on the Claret Jug two years ago at Royal Lytham & St. Anne’s, Graeme McDowell is a player with all the attributes to become an Open Champion.

The Irishman has a great track record on links courses and won the testing Open de France on his last outing. Furthermore, his form shows an identical pattern to the run-up to his 2010 US Open victory: win – week off – major win.

The 34-year-old is an accurate driver of the ball, a great shot-maker, and an excellent putter, so there’s nothing to suggest he isn’t a serious contender this week.

Matt Kuchar – 40/1

Kuchar is enjoying yet another hugely impressive season and his stats suggest he has every chance of going very close at this event.

After four missed cuts in the first decade of this career, the American has made the weekend in three of the last four Opens with a best finish of ninth in 2012.

His results this year have been great with a tournament win at the linksy challenge of the RBC Heritage, a tied fifth at the Masters and tied 12th at the US Open.

Not long but incredibly accurate off the tee, paired with a deadly touch both on and around the greens, the 36-year old is set up for a big weekend at Hoylake.

Thomas Bjorn – 60/1

If you’re looking for a player that fits all the recent Open Championship trends, Thomas Bjorn may just be your man.

Each of the last three Open Championship winners were in their early 40s and came here off the back of four rounds in the Scottish Open the week before, as well as having finished highly in previous Opens.

Bjorn has three top-5 finishes over the course of his Open career, and although his tie for 41st here in 2006 may be the strongest indication of form, Hoylake is much more likely to play like a links style course this weekend.

The veteran didn’t play in the recent US Open but finished inside the top-10 at Augusta back in April, and at reasonably long odds he’s well worth an each-way bet.

Roger Federer is still a formidable threat on grass, but with this game likely to go over 3 sets, Djokovic’s physical staying power and sheer resilience should prove too much for the Swiss.

The teams meet in Sao Paulo, both looking for their first points in Group D after Uruguay were beaten 3-1 by Costa Rica and England lost 2-1 to Italy.

England are 6/5 favourites after an impressive showing against Italy, if they can replicate that performance Roy Hodgson’s side should have little problem brushing past a lapse Uruguay side.

Hodgson has vowed to “use any weapon we’ve got” and is expected to field the same line-up that lost to Italy last weekend, with leading scorer, Wayne Rooney, operating as a central playmaker.

There have been calls for Rooney to be dropped following an uninspiring display on the left of England’s midfield against Italy, but the striker created more chances than any other player in the England vs Italy game (3, including one assist).

Rooney’s available at 6/1 to score the first goal of the game and simultaneously break his own World Cup scoring duck.

Uruguay will be without the suspended Maxi Pereira and the injured Diego Lugano and if England play with the same quick, attacking style, Uruguay’s defence will be exposed.

Uruguay’s strengths are their front players: Edinson Cavani, Diego Forlán, Gastón Ramírez and Luis Suárez.

With this in mind, there should be goals from both sides despite the magnitude of the occasion. We’re backing over 3.5 goals at 13/5.
