So, dear readers, you may be wondering what I've been up to lately. Here's my answer, in just one photo!

Yes, she already loves books!

Thus, as you can imagine, my reading habits have changed. I've discovered a passion for reading nonfiction. Specifically, a passion for reading nonfiction about pregnancy, parenting, and other related topics. What can I say, it's immediately relevant to my life at the moment! I've also become much more comfortable reading on my phone and on the Kindle. Luckily, nonfiction lends itself well to the type of reading that I'm able to do these days, rife with interruptions as they are.

Speaking of interruptions, before another one strikes, let me leave you with a list of upcoming lists!

Well, this list is a bit different, in a lot of ways. First, and most obviously, it's not a list of 10. Mind you, I'm going ahead and publishing it because really, I've got a lot more than 10 links in here, and I'm eager to hear what you think! Books I Mention in Class

Today's list is a bit odd, and yet I find that when I teach, I frequently mention several books. In case you weren't in class, or you couldn't write fast enough, here's the latest list!

Nonfiction: (NOTE: for this list, the links embedded in the titles of the books lead to authors' websites, the links embedded in the pictures lead to Amazon, where you can read further reviews!)

1. Brain Rules by Dr. John Medina
This is an easy to read and easy to remember summary of the latest research into how your brain actually works. It's packed with research results that you'll find yourself quoting extensively. You can click on the title of the book to go to the author's website which has lots of supplemental information. Enjoy!

2. Nurture Shock by Po Bronson and Ashley Merryman
This is a summary of the latest research on child development. It's amazing how much has been discovered in the past few years, and yet, because of the speed of our news cycle, it's hard to see that the overall picture has changed dramatically. I really do recommend that everyone who comes into contact with kiddos read this book as a reality check. Delightfully, the website associated with the book (click on the name) has a LOT of information both from the book, and information written after publication. Go, read, learn, and enjoy!

3. Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why by Laurence Gonzales
I've been recommending this book for years. In fact, one year I gave away 15 copies as gifts. Combining great storytelling with hard science (occasionally dense), the author takes us on a search for the common elements that allowed folks to survive all kinds of situations. By the time you finish the book, you'll have a set of survival skills to develop now, while you're safe, that will help you no matter where, or in what kind of survival situation your find yourself. I discovered this book when I was lost in an internal wilderness and it really helped. Mind you, he spends more time talking about external wildernesses, but the insights are valid for both.

4. Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work by Dr. John Gottman
As discussed in Malcolm Gladwell's book, Blink: The Power of Thinking Without Thinking, this (rather poorly-titled IMHO) book is the result of Dr. Gottman's years of research that allow him to predict with stunning accuracy the likelihood that a couple will split up or stay together. It's a well-written book, with lots of mini-checklists and questions as well as stories and data supported by scientific research. Fun!

5. Don't Shoot the Dog: the New Art of Teaching and Training by Karen Pryor
Of all the books I've ever read, this slim volume has had the greatest impact on how I teach. My classes are now more relaxed and more fun for everyone, both for me and for my students. (Evidence? Attendance figures are much improved!) Mind you, this is theoretically a book about how to train animals, written by a dolphin trainer. That said, it's also a beautifully clear explanation of exactly how to shape behavior. For each section she explains how to apply that concept to a pet, a child, a spouse, a boss, and yourself. With knowledge comes power. Read this book and use your powers wisely! :)

Fiction: I often don't get as much time to spend recommending fiction as I do nonfiction, unfortunately. Also, because I teach all age levels, this list may not suit everyone. Still, these are books that I mentioned in several different classes. Enjoy! (NOTE: Yes, I do teach ALL age levels.)

6. Starting with my top recommendation for the toddler set: ANY board book by Sandra Boynton. She's fabulous! My favorite? Your Personal Penguin, which I bought when engaged. NOTE: most of her books also have songs. Here's the link for the Penguin one.

7. I Am Going! by Mo Willems
The author of the (deservedly) famous Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, has begin a series of wildly entertaining first readers. The Elephant and Piggie series of books is designed for kids who are just starting to try and read on their own. Kids get a lot of help from both the pictures and the delightful typography. Best of all? The stories are fun for the adults to listen to, as each has a twist at the end.
I'm willing to go out on a limb for this author and state for the record that I think his books will be as enduring and as genre-shaping as the Dr. Seuss books are for the Level 1 readers! A bold prediction, I know, but one I'll stand behind as a reading teacher with a LOT of experience.

8 & 9. Skipping several levels of development as a reader, my favorite Robert Heinlein novel, as mentioned to my older classes, is either Friday or The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. Please, don't make me choose just one!

Friday is a one of the strongest female protagonists out there, and I just love listening in on her life. Sadly, I think this vision of Earth is increasingly accurate, and that worries me.

The Moon is a Harsh Mistress features one of the more unique narrative voices in all of sci-fi, and is basically a handbook on how to run a revolution. When Luna City is finally built, I hope everyone will have read this book!

10. John Ringo's series that starts with There Will Be Dragons is thought-provoking, well-written, wild adventure. It's sci-fi mixed with ren-faire folk, mixed with the best of the fantasy realm, while also discussing deep philosophical and ethical issues. Ahh yes, and there's Bast the wood elf. I won't spoil any more of the story, just go get a copy and get lost reading!

Disguised Literary Classics - with pictures!

The Picture Books:
1. Saint George and the Dragon, retold by Margaret Hodges, illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman
A retelling of Edmund Spenser's Faerie Queene, this book really helped when I finally sat down to read the original. Granted, convincing Dr. M. that I really had read it as a child was a bit on the difficult side!

2. Gilgamesh The King, retold and illustrated by Ludmila Zeman
A retelling of Gilgamesh, and apparently one of a series.

3. Merlin and the Dragons, by Jane Yolen, illustrated by Li Ming
A King Arthur story, Jane Yolen has (again) created a new story that feels like an old one we should have known.

4. Canterbury Tales, selected, translated, and adapted by Barbara Cohen, illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman
A retelling of Geoffrey Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, in clear but poetic language, and beautifully illustrated. I think she's also published some posters of individual characters, taken from this book.

5. The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, illustrations by Gustave Dore, editor Anne Rooney
A picture book version of this famous narrative poem, the illustrations are just gorgeous, and quite helpful in providing context.

6. The Children's Classic Poetry Collection, compiled by Nicola Baxter, illustrated by Cathie Shuttleworth
It may look like a picture book, but it reads like a Norton!

What happens after Beowulf?

8. The Eyre Affaire, by Jasper Fforde
*Wicked giggles* When you take getting lost in a book to the next level . . .

9. Firebrand, by Marion Zimmer Bradley
This is the retelling of the fall of Troy that brought it to life for me - told from Kassandra's viewpoint.

Another story of Troy, this one from a different viewpoint.

After Harry Potter

Focus for this list: It's a simple idea -- what would be a good read after you've finished rereading the Harry Potter series for the 12,473rd time? There are lots of answers out there. This list, however, is organized by the House that you identify with the most. Mind you, there's no rule about reading only one House's recommended books. Pretend you're wandering the halls of Hogwarts and have all the secrets needed to browse through the books stashed in the common rooms for each House. And with that, let us begin.

Ravenclaw: Known for intellect, wit, creativity, and wisdom, those who lean toward Ravenclaw may well enjoy these books:

1. Sophie's World by Jostein Gaarder
This engaging and cleverly written book all begins with a mysterious letter and an interesting question. By the time you're done, though, you'll have reviewed more than 3.000 years worth of philosophy, and enjoyed yourself thoroughly.

2. The Eyre Affair: A Thursday Next Novel by Jasper Fforde
The first in a series, this blend of mystery, fantasy, and high literature takes place in an alternate England where high literature is wildly important, and evil villains are able to kidnapp characters out of books. If you've ever wanted to literally step into a book, this is the book for you!

3. Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card
What happens if you're wildly intelligent, and the government wants to harness your wit and leadership to fight an alien invasion? Oh yes, while entertaining you, this award-winning novel will lead you to think more deeply about topics that concern us all.

Hufflepuff: Well known for their honesty, fair play, loyalty and tolerance, I think those who enjoy the gentle Hufflepuff lifestyle will enjoy the following tales:

1. A Spell for Chameleon by Piers Anthony

In a land where everyone has a personal magic, Bink doesn't seem to have any at all. Worse yet, if he doesn't discover his magical talent soon, he'll be banished. This is the beginning of a wildly punny series. I think the first 10-12 books in the series are the best, but to a certain extent, they're like candy, you just know you'll enjoy them!

2. Another Fine Myth by Robert Asprin

Fast-paced and delightfully silly, this series is a great way to relax after a stressful day of school or work. Another series of his, Phule's Company, pokes fun at the genre of military sci-fi.

3. The Unlikely Ones by Mary Brown

This book is a bit darker than the others, but it's a book my sister found stashed in the corner of the Hufflepuff common room. She says it's about a group working together, with emphasis on cooperation and tenacity. I remember reading it years ago and have just bought another copy!

Gryffindor: The daring Gryffindors value bravery and chivalry. These are just a few of the adventure-laden books that they've been passing around when they were to have been studying!

1. The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

With a hero with whom I think Harry would really identify, as well as some pretty terrible monsters, this is the beginning of an epic saga.

2. Uglies by Scott Westerfeld

This may seem like an odd choice, given the title, but really, this is a fabulous exploration of bravery and self-determination.

3. The Sea of Trolls by Nancy Farmer

An epic quest with a young protagonist, this is a grand adventure. What happened after the end of Beowulf? This will tell you, and leave you wanting more!

Slytherin: Quite ambitious, cunning, and resourceful, I think those who are fascinated with Slytherin would also enjoy these books.

1. Marked: A House of Night Novel by P.C. Cast & Kristin Cast

Three words: vampire finishing school.

2. The Amulet of Samarkand (The Bartimaeus Triology, Book One) by Jonathan Stroud

I have to confess, I love the voice of the main narrator of this series. Who is it? Why the demon who is summoned by an 11 year old magician to get his revenge on an older magician who was mean to him, of course! No really, the demon has a great sense of humor. If nothing else, read the first few pages, footnotes included, and see for yourself. (Thank you, Amazon Preview!)

3. Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer

This is the perfect book for an aspiring Slytherin. In fact, I've heard that they require their First Years to read it. After all, what's not to like about an Irish millionaire genius, who is also a criminal mastermind, and is only 12 years old? Just watch out for the LEPrecon forces. They're nothing to mess with. That is, unless you're Artemis.

Summer Reading Lists

Focus for this List: My friends, it's truly summer, and thus, time for everyone to recommend their summer reading picks. This list will give you a list of other resources to explore. Do let me know which links you end up liking, and what you're reading. Enjoy!

1. Lifehacker: How to Create an Awesome Summer Reading List
My husband's reaction when he caught me reading this article was to say in a tone of some indignation, "What are you doing on MY favorite website?" Yes, it's not normally my stomping ground, but they actually came up with a wonderfully comprehensive list of resources. Check out their list of Books That Changed Your Lives, compiled by surveying their readers. It tells you all you need to know about those who frequent this website!

2. Great Books Lists
While not very visually interesting, this website is a list of links to lists of good books. Most of the collected links are by people trying to define the canonical texts. The sheer variety of lists keeps it from being too narrowly focused for my taste. That, and they listed Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land as one of the classics. Ya'gotta respect the Dean if you're going to have MY approval! :)

Note: this website actually indexed all the books on all the lists . . . so just scroll to the bottom of the page to see if anyone gave respect to YOUR favorite author!

3. NPR: Three Rapid Reads for the Impatient Intellectual
This particular list is for Michelle, as I know she likes short stories! *waves* You can also find other NPR recommendation lists: Summer Reads to Transport You Back in Time, Three Memoirs that Won't Make You Slit Your Wrists, and Indie Booksellers Target Summer's Best Reads. Go on, dig in, you know you want to!

4. The Book Seer
Ok, I know it's silly of me to be seduced by the clever interface, and the grammatical sentences, not to mention the commentary you get when you don't fill out both fields, but seriously? This is a fabulously fun website, and a great way to find some recommendations! So, what are YOU going to read next?

5. List of Lists for Kids
Similar to this post, this is a compilation of links to lists, this time focusing on books for the younger set. I'm not generally a fan of about.com, but this is actually quite a helpful list of links.

6. International Reading Association
While it's a bit odd to have pdf documents rather than clickable links, the information remains good, and the choices are interesting. This is a professional organization for English teachers.

7. Modern Library Lists
These are the folks who came up with the much-discussed Top 100 list that's been circulating on facebook since forever. I was delighted to find both the books their editorial board chose, and also the books their readers recommended. Yes, I liked the readers' list better . . . more Heinlein, you know!

8. Oprah: Books for the Armchair Traveler
The best part of this list is that each book recommendation comes with links to other resources. Sometimes it's an interview with the author, and sometimes it's to a book club discussion guide, the point is that they've really made this a rich resource. Here's another nifty Oprah link: 4 Books to Steal from Your Teenager, because hey, I agree with two of her choices, and I've added the other two to my To Be Read List!

Also, a list of her favorite books from one of my favorite authors: Jodi Picoult. Great website!

9. Amazon
Honestly? I tend to turn to Amazon for reviews on just about everything. Their book recommendations aren't particularly on course for me, but that's improving as I actually buy books from them, rather than just using them for research.

10. Nifty Cool Literature Map
Ok, in terms of fun graphical interface, this wins the contest. Type in the name of your favorite author and see what happens. I won't spoil the surprise, but I will say that I was delighted with the depth of their sci-fi offerings!

Great Book Club Picks

Focus for this List: It seems to me that there is a special flavor to books chosen by book clubs. They tend to be complex, depressing, and bogged down in reality. That said, I do understand that if the primary reaction to a book is, "Wow, what a fabulous book! What else has the author written?" then there may not be much to discuss. Thus, this list is my take on books that provoke discussion, while also being good reads! PS: I tend not to like depressing, thus, most of these books are a bit more upbeat!

Fiction:
1. Children No More by Mark Van Name
Externally, this is about the partnership between a hero and his hyper-intelligent assault vehicle. (Yes, it's great science-fiction.) Internally, however, this is a heart-wrenching story about the rehabilitation of children who are forced to become soldiers. Another reason to read this with a book club? Mark is donating ALL the profits from ALL the sales of this book (regardless of format) to Falling Whistles, a charity that focuses on rehabilitating and reintegrating child soldiers. Look HERE for more details. Help save children while enjoying a good story.

2. Keeping Faith by Jodi Picoult

I have almost every novel Jodi Picoult has written, and they've all kept me up late, and drained me of tears, many, many times. She has a knack for really exploring an ethical issue, from so many different perspectives. Thus, her novels are ideal for book clubs because there is so much to discuss. This particular book of hers is one that had me up late thinking hard about belief, and trying to decide who in the book I did believe. It's a fascinating book and I think you'll enjoy discussing it with friends.

3. Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert

I didn't think I was going to like this book, I really didn't. Then this memoir grabbed me by the heart and wouldn't let go. The hype on this one is right -- go ahead and enjoy! I just bought the sequel, and will let you know what I think!

4. Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen

After hearing so many of my book club's members rave about how wonderful this book is, I decided that hey, $4 for the Kindle version wasn't too much to pay. It was fabulous. 1930s circuses, romance, danger, intrigue, historical details, and the best elephant in fiction today. Surprisingly enough, it's also a moving examination of what it is to be old. So, I know this isn't a radically different suggestion for a book club read, but it is a good one!

5. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

When word of this book first started circulating, I assumed it was about anorexia. Wow, was I wrong! Instead, it's my new favorite dystopia, which comments directly on our current culture of reality shows, and the wide divide between the haves and the have-nots. It's thought provoking, and each book in the trilogy kept me glued to the pages well into the morning hours. There is a LOT to discuss here, and I find myself wandering around, wanting to talk to others who've read it -- a sure sign of a good book-club book!

Nonfiction

6. My Life as an Experiment: One Man's Humble Quest to Improve Himself by Living as a Woman, Becoming George Washington, Telling No Lies, and Other Radical Tests by A.J. Jacobs

This fascinating and well-written book is a summation of all the crazy odd experiments that the author has written about in his articles and other books, The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible, and The Know-It-All: One Man's Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World. This amusing book is particularly easy to read in chunks, and leads to some interesting discussions.

7. Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why by Laurence Gonzales

I've been raving about how amazing this book is for years now. What delights me is how many people come back from having read it, raving themselves about what an interesting and helpful book it is. Granted, there are some really technical bits, but then again, don't book clubs delight in books with difficult bits? That said, the author's journalistic background shows in the fabulous (and true) stories that he tells as ways of making his point.

8. The Anatomy of Hope: How People Prevail in the Face of Illness by Dr. Jerome Groopman

It's been a while since I read this one, but I do remember it being a very thoughtful examination of what makes up true hope, and how it can affect you. I gave a copy to a friend who is a minister, and she said it was just full of sermon illustrations. Give it a look!

9. The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell (or Blink, or Outliers, if you've already read that one!)

Malcolm Gladwell has a very engaging way of writing about ideas by telling stories. Best of all, these books will change the way you think -- or the way you think about thinking -- and you'll find yourself quoting his stories at parties for years to come.

10. "Why Do I Love These People?": Understanding, Surviving, and Creating Your Own Family, by Po Bronson

I've decided that this fellow is one of my new favorite authors. His newest book, NurtureShock: New Thinking About Children, was particularly thought provoking as my husband and I are both teachers. Either of these books would make great book club choices. One focuses on telling stories from interviews with various people about what makes up their families. The answers will broaden your understanding of the possibilities and make you reexamine your own family relationships. The other, NurtureShock, focuses on collating and summarizing all of the most recent discoveries in the field of child development. Most of the research I'd already heard of, as it was announced, but having it all put together in context was amazingly helpful, and helped me rethink teenage arguing, among other things! E-Reading

Focus for this List: our sweet Mama and Papa Bear (my in-laws), gave us a Kindle for Christmas. This is not something I'd ever contemplated buying. So, this list isn't so much a tech review (I've not done any comparisons) as it is simply a list of things I've noticed while reading on the Kindle.

1. You can get new books faster, (and for cheaper!)
This is, in fact, the thing that first got me excited about using the Kindle. I could pay $16 for the hardcover version of Lois McMaster Bujold's newest Vorkosigan book, Cryoburn, which wasn't in our bookstores yet, OR I could buy it from Baen Books, spending only $6, and begin reading immediately. Who could refuse?!

The immediate gratification factor is huge. (HUGE! I was thrilled when I realized I could get Mark Van Name's newest book NOW ... and its copyright date is next August!!!).

Still, I'm glad that the first book I tried to read was Cryoburn. It's by an author whom I love, and it's fast-paced and absorbing. Had I tried to read something less . . . gripping . . . I'm not sure I would have pushed past the discomfort of first reading on a machine rather than a book.

2. I can carry a library in my purse!
That statement alone tells me that the future has arrived. I've read books on computers before (Thanks, David Drake, and Baen.com!). That tired me out just because it tied me to my computer for hours upon hours. Reading on a Kindle still allows you the freedom to wander around and read while you microwave a snack. Best of all? In this era of reduced baggage allowances on airplanes, decisions on which book to take with me are MUCH easier.

3. It takes some effort to get used to reading on an electronic device and little things may throw you.
Getting a cover helps, but it still feels weird -- like you're only reading one side of the page. Also, I've found that it just doesn't feel right unless I tuck my first finger of my right hand between the Kindle and the back of the cover. I had no idea that was such a firmly ingrained habit of mine!

4. I miss turning pages.
Just today, finishing up my 5th book on the Kindle, I swiped at the screen as if to turn the page. Accidentally turning the pages is a frequent problem. Interestingly, what I had thought would be the biggest deterrant to reading comfortably on the device, the flip from black text to white text as you turn the page, now escapes my attention (for the most part). One thing that helped was reducing the text size so that I'm not constantly having to deal with all of this. The human brain is amazing, and I mark my new comfort with this up to my fascination with Vorkosigan's adventures!

5. It may help you stay focused.
Having a cover means that frequently when I'm done reading for the moment I just close the book and put it up, without turning it off (it shuts off automatically). To my occasional dismay, however, when I turn it back on, it opens right back up to where I left off, thus capturing my attention. Mind you, this meant that I was MUCH faster in finishing my re-read of a nonfiction book than I expected I would be. I'm still not sure if this is a good or a bad thing!

6. I don't like reading anthologies, or collections of short-stories on this machine.
I like bouncing around and reading stories out of order, and that's a LOT harder to do on a Kindle. Either that, or I've missed some trick of the technology.

7. You can't judge the book by the cover . . .
. . . but then again, it's harder to do a good preview. I'm still deciding if I like the fact that the Kindle automatically starts a new book on the first page of the story, rather than on the cover page / dedication page / copyright page / table of contents. For the most part, I don't like it. As a reading teacher who spends time teaching folks how to set themselves up properly for a book by previewing it before getting lost in the story, I REALLY don't like it. For myself, well, I'm patient enough to click the back button 10 times in order to get to the beginning.

7.2 People don't judge ME by the cover.
Think about it, that bland black cover means that I can be reading ANYTHING and no one will ever know. Mind you, this may reduce the number of odd conversations I have on airplanes. (Thanks, John Ringo. . . )

8. There are so many ways in which electronic books just make good sense.
From an environmental standpoint, ebooks make sense. From a practical home-storage standpoint, ebooks make sense, and now, with Baen's help, from a financial standpoint, ebooks make sense.

9. The big issue:
You can't sell your boring ebooks at the used book store when you decide you'd rather read something else. You also can't lend them to a friend. That's disheartening. For the price you're paying, it's also disgusting.

10. Will the characters survive?
The biggest shock to reading on the Kindle? You lose the subliminal sense of where you are in the book, and how much time the author has left to either get everything resolved, or to kill everyone off. Again, I'm not sure if this is ultimately a good or a bad thing. I've hated reading with the pages clutched in my right hand ever diminishing and feeling like I was racing the author to the end. I've hated knowing that an enjoyed idyll on another world was drawing inevitably to a close. That said, I finished Jennifer Crusie's newest book, Maybe This Time, and found myself not believing it was all over. I'd lost track of how much time I had left with the characters.

My friends, this isn't a list. I've been dealing with a nasty mix of pneumonia & asthma for two weeks now, and just haven't been up to doing much of anything. My apologies.

Meanwhile, to tide you over, a quick link to one of the best resources for great science fiction:

Baen.com . I'm specifically linking to their Recommended Young Adult Reading List. Mind you, some of these are favorites of mine, and I first encountered them as an adult. I think the Young Adult label is primarily because they're "safe" when it comes to relationships between the genders.

Note: my other favorite section of the Baen website is the Baen Free Library. That's right, free, downloadable (in any format) full-length books that you'd otherwise have to pay for. They're usually the first in a series, so that you can have a nice taste to see if you're going to want / need to read the rest. Enjoy!

The Key to the Vorkosigan Saga

Focus for this List: The title for this list was nearly, "How to Avoid Insanity While Chained to the Couch by Pneumonia." Yes, this is a series that is so grippingly well-written that you'll forget that you're coughing up substances of quite repulsive color and consistency. The characters are so real that I'd recognize them anywhere, even in a highly-medicated fog. (Miles would appreciate that one!)

That said, this is also one of the most frustrating series in all of sci-fi, simply because of its publishing success. Lois McMaster Bujold wrote the series as a set of independent, yet linked, books. Then when the rising popularity intersected the difficulty of finding the older books in the series, they started republishing them in omnibus editions. These editions are actually quite well thought-out, and yet, if you're not careful, you'll end up buying books you already own. Thus, with my sweet husband's help, I present to you the cheapest, most efficient way to get to know Miles and the gang. Mind you, we used several of the very well-written lists out on the internet as resources. The difference in this list? Fewer spoilers!

1. Falling Free by Lois McMaster Bujold
This book is QUITE independent from the rest of the Vorkosigan series, but I present it in this list as it's set in the same universe. It's much more serious "hard" science fiction, than the space opera that the rest of the series can lean toward. NOTE: before you buy this one, read my note down at #8.

2. Cordelia's Honor by Lois McMaster Bujold
This includes Shards of Honor and Barrayar, and tells the stories of Mile's parents and a bit of his boyhood.

3. Young Miles by Lois McMaster Bujold
This includes Warrior's Apprentice (one of my favorites!), The Vor Game , and the short story, "The Mountains of Mourning." Yes, you should read the short story before you read the Vor Game.

4. Miles, Mystery & Mayhem by Lois McMaster Bujold
This includes Cetaganda, Ethan of Athos, and "Labrynth" from Borders of Infinity. I love the gender issues these bring up, and recommend them highly to everyone. (Pssst, Shannon, Baron, I'm talkin' to YOU!) Still, I really believe that while you'll enjoy each of these stories individually, you'll find them MUCH more amusing if you read them in order. That said, I view either Cordelia's Honor, or Young Miles as suitable starting points. Or Falling Free.

5. Miles Errant by Lois McMaster Bujold
This includes Brothers in Arms, Borders of Infinity, and Mirror Dance. Ahh the sibling issues, eh? *grin*

6. Memory by Lois McMaster Bujold
This one is a stand-alone book, at least for now. I'd tell you more about it, but it's been a while since I read this one and I can't remember much. Heh.

7. Miles in Love by Lois McMaster Bujold
This includes Komarr, A Civil Campaign, and Winterfair Gifts. Absolutely delightful reads.

8. And here's where we run into trouble. You can either buy Diplomatic Immunity as a stand-alone book, OR you can buy it as part of an omnibus, Miles, Mutants and Microbes, and also get a copy of Falling Free and "Labrynth" from Borders of Infinity. If you've been following along, you've already gotten a copy of "Labrynth" from Miles, Mystery, and Mayhem. So, yeah, chrononlogically, you really need to separate Falling Free and Diplomatic Immunity, and thus, my preference for separate books rather than an omnibus. Still, if you're new to the series, it would be more cost-effective to go ahead with the omnibus. The three stories could certainly be read, and enjoyed, as a packaged set.

9. Cryoburn by Lois McMaster Bujold
This is her latest book, and it's wonderful. The fact that I could buy it for my Kindle for $5 from the Baen website, or wait another week or two for our local Barnes and Nobel to bring in the hardcover so that I could pay $25 for a book I don't have room to store decided me, and this was the first book I ever read on the Kindle. It was absorbing enough that I eventually adjusted to the technology. And yes, the ending made me cry -- for a Long Time.

10. She can't possibly stop the series here, so I'm leaving this space open and looking longingly in her general direction. *Big Grin*

Final Note: M'okay, so this list helps you get over 18 novels in a series that contains three Hugo-winning novels, one Nebula-winning novel, and a number of Hugo- and Nebula-winning short stories and novellas, while only buying 9 books. Nifty, eh? For those of you who like to read via electronics, I've got an even better deal. Books for Those Who Teach

Focus for this List: I've been a teacher for 12 years now. Most of that has been in a rather non-traditional setting. For 7 years, however, I taught in various private schools. In my last year of teaching, I found a book that, had I found it earlier, might have kept me in the classroom. Here's a list for everyone still in the trenches (and for those looking to join the lonely horde).

1. The First Days of School: How to Be an Effective Teacher by Harry Wong, & Rosemary Wong
Despite the somewhat cheesy title, this really is a very factual guide (and collection of lists) of what you need to do to get ready for your first year of teaching. Remember, as M. always says, your first year at a new school is still a first year of teaching, so hold on to this one and be ready to pull it out and use as needed.

2. The Teacher's Survival Guide: Real Classroom Dilemmas and Practical Solutions, by Marc Major
This is the book that I wish I'd found earlier. This is a fabulous mix of good philosophy, and brutally practical advice. The sections on classroom management should be required reading for everyone. If you buy only one book, this is the one.

3. The Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher's Life, 10th Anniversary Edition by Parker Palmer
This is a book to read over the summer. It focuses on the idea that you can only teach effectively from a position that is true to who you are at the core. In other words, if focuses on that unpopular notion that not everything can be prescribed and that teachers are individuals who may find different solutions to the same problems. A very thoughtful book that can help you articulate why things work or don't work well for you.

4. Tongue Fu! At School: 30 Ways to Get Along with Teachers, Principals, Students, and Parents by Sam Horn
Ok, I'll admit it, I picked this one up initially because the title made me giggle. Still, having read it, this is a guide to the snappy come-back and thoughtful response that calm situations down and keep things managable. It's a delightful read.

5. Coloring Outside the Lines by Dr. Roger Schank
This is aimed more at parents than at teachers, and yet, I found it quite an enjoyable read. The author talks about some specific ways to raise kids who are more verbal, creative, analytical, and inquisitive, and who have more gumption, and ambition. Yes, that list is straight from the table of contents. This would be especially helpful for those with younger kiddos.

6. The Students Are Watching: Schools and the Moral Contract by Theodore Sizer and Nancy Sizer
This is another summer read for teachers (when else would you have time?). It's an interesting discussion of how our small, everyday actions impact the kids and the culture of the school. Aimed primarily at those dealing with the middle and upper grades, I think this would be a good book for parents to read as well.

7. Teach Like Your Hair's on Fire: The Methods and Madness Inside Room 56 by Rafe Esquith
This is the 5th grade teacher we all wish we'd had. He's had a while to work out some elaborate (and really cool) systems, but I'm not sure how well they would work if you don't have the same group of kids all day. Still, as an inspirational read, it's wonderful.

8. Teaching with Love & Logic: Taking Control of the Classroom by Jim Fay & David Funk
Another summer read, when you can sit down and read it all the way through, this has become one of the standard ways to deal with classroom discipline.

9. Fair Isn't Always Equal: Assessing & Grading in the Differentiated Classroom by Rick Wormeli
This is a really thoughtful analysis of how we grade the work, and how to structure our classroom so that it can be truly fair to all of the little ones. The analogy that always strikes me? How is it fair that I get to wear glasses and someone else doesn't? Well if someone "needs glasses" in order to "see the board" then, isn't it fair that we make sure the student gets what is needed in the way of support?

10. Chronicles of Fairacre by Miss Read
For when all the books of theory, advice, and rhetoric about rubrics have just been too much, escape to the 1955, beautifully imagined world of Fairacre. A peaceful sanctuary, and an enjoyable read.

Gender Neutral Wedding Resources

Focus for this List: Some dear friends of mine are just beginning their wedding planning process. I'm delighted that they are being married in a state that recognizes the fundamental issue of marriage equality -- fairness. This then, is my list of resources that I hope will prove useful to those planning their happily ever after.

My Main Advice? Before you start planning ANYTHING, sit down and discuss what is really important to each of you. Pick one or two CORE things, and make the rest of the decisions in such a way that they support that core purpose. Our core ideas were that we wanted to be surrounded by friends and family, and that we wanted all of our guests to be comfortable. We were also determined to stay within our budget. Our key words when it came to the ceremony were Serious & Joyful. Once you make those decisions, the rest fall in line. Bright yellow flowers for everyone, some grown at home? Joyful, and good for the budget! :)

1. Reality check first, my friends: How Much Will It All Cost? This is an interesting calculator that may or may not be helpful. Our favorite game was to go through the list and see what expenses we could chop!

2. Next? Organize all your data. We used This Workbook, but a dear friend recommends The Google Document System. Looking back, I wish we'd used Google Documents as it would have been easier to upload / download all of our (laboriously entered) pile of addresses. That said, my favorite part of the entire wedding planning process remains the evening that we shopped through 5 stores in search of the perfect address book in which to merge our lists of family and friends.

3. Figure out what you'll promise. I spent a LOT of time thinking about the ceremony, the readings, and the vows. After all, they're what make it a wedding, regardless of what you're wearing. My most frequently visited resource were the IndieBride discussion boards. (Yes, I know it says bride in the name, but it has info for everyone!) My biggest worry in recommending this website is that it seems to be nearing the end of its active life. That said, the depth of the discussion boards is quite helpful, and the tone is generally positive and inclusive. And hey, maybe posting it here will help revive it! (The Offbeat Bride seems to be an offspring of the IndieBride site. Enjoy!) 3.5 About those readings, here is another good resource: Poets.org

4. Mind your manners. Weddings tend to exacerbate the inner etiquette maven we all try to deny we possess. So, knowing that this is the biggest party you'll likely ever throw, go ahead and educate yourself. That way, when folks start nattering on about "You should . . ." you'll already know what is considered "proper." Then go ahead and do what you want to do! Here's a great book: Wedding Etiquette Hell: The Bride's Bible to Avoiding Everlasting Damnation, and the equally wonderful website.

4.5 Addressing the invitations: despite my best intentions, we ended up sending double-enveloped invitations, with all the drama that entailed. Here's your reference website. Yes, people notice. Take the time and do it right. You'll feel good in the morning!

5. Now, what will you wear? I recommend that you buy a good suit or a tux if that's what you're planning on wearing. Everyone needs a good, well-fitting suit. Here's your best resource for doing so without breaking the bank. We've ordered from them, and the quality is good. If you're going to be wearing a dress, I recommend looking at all the drool-worthy websites, and then contacting NetBride.com for a price quote. They've got fabulous customer service, and truly simplify the buying process.

6. Let's party! Now, on to the stuff that most folks think of when they think of wedding planning: the location, the reception, and the decorations. The location is so specific to you, that I'm not getting involved. Good luck. Go see places in person -- website photos can be deceptive. The reception, again, is wildly specific. Now, on to decor and all the millions of DIY projects in which you can easily become enmeshed.

The Emotional Side: This may or may not be you, but I've found both of these books to be helpful: What No One Tells the Bride: Surviving the Wedding, Sex After the Honeymoon, Second Thoughts, Wedding Cake Freezer Burn, Becoming Your Mother, Screaming about Money, Screaming about In-Laws, etc. Yes, it talks about all the strangeness that is so hard to articulate. 9. Drama, drama, drama: There will come a point when all you want to do is vent to someone else who is also planning a wedding. Perhaps several someone elses. WeddingBee.com is the most active discussion board I've found, and it would be a great place to post questions / rants / ideas. I will, of course, also mention IndieBride again, as their discussion boards saved me, several times, if only by reminding me that it could always be worse!

10. One Last Piece of Advice: Don't Open a Gift Unless You're Ready to Write the Thank You Note! (pen, note, stamp, and time all ready!) Yes, this may mean a pile of un-opened gifts may accumulate, but that's ok. Opening a gift is always fun, and that makes the note painless to write. The more traditional route of creating a list of who gave what and opening everything at once may seem efficient, but I guarantee it won't be as much fun, and it'll take a LOT longer. We started out following our system, and then ended up being pushed into opening a large stack without taking the time to write notes as we opened. It was fun at the time, but dealing with the list of notes to be written was *ahem* not as much fun. Note: when you get stuck, freshen up your phrases with a google search. It'll help keep you from feeling like a robot!

Some suggestions for books on crafts and hobbies – if you speak German...but also some in English. For those who like to do all sorts of handcrafted stuff – or would like to try out something new, I have some books I particularly like. Maybe you will like some of them, too.

1) Zauberhafte Marionetten by Margot Koetzle. -- This is actually NOT a really good book on marionettes, but it got me into making them and I still make the controllers the way this book taught me. Good instruction for beginners, and even less talented artists can have fabulous results!

(PS: This is the one she sent me as a wedding gift . .. isn't she gorgeous?!)

2) Creative Cloth Doll Collection: A Complete Guide to Creating Figures, Faces, Clothing, Accessories, and Embellishments, by Patti Medaris Culea. -- Looking for books on dolls clothes I came across this and had to order it. It took ages till I finally got it, but the waiting was worth it. Gorgeous dolls, and step-by-step guides for unskilled and skilled artists, instructions for embellishments, dresses, etc, recommendations for materials etc. And at the end of the book there's a gallery of dolls by different artists. This is one of the nicest books I've ever bought, seriously!

3) PraxisWissen Filzen: Geschichte, Material, Nassfilzen, Nunofilzen, Trockenfilzen, Tipps & Tricks, Galerie, by Monique Rahner -- I'm just getting into nuno felting, but would also like to try out some other techniques, so I looked for a book that would give me a good introduction to materials, techniques, and give me inspiration. This book is awesome and explains everything nicely!

4) The Dolls' Dressmaker: The Complete Pattern Book, by Venus A. Dodge. -- If you have kids who play with dolls, or make dolls, this is the book for you: rather easy patterns for different sizes from basic clothes to accessories, well explained. Unless you are looking for specific pattersn, e.g. medieval dresses for dolls, there won't be a better and more complete book for doll dressmaking. Best thing is: you get it for a fair price.

5) Falken Lexikon der Seidenmalerei, by Karin Huber. -- While doing a lot of silk painting, I got this encyclopedia a couple of years ago and I still look things up every now and then.

6) Hausschuhe stricken und verfilzen: Das Verfilzen übernimmt die Waschmaschine, by Friederike Pfund. - I love knitting, so we decided to give away felt slippers for christmas last year. I got this book to get some ideas. It's not really inspirational, but it helped me a lot to find the right sizes and get an idea about the material. For those who know how to knit it's quite helpful, the rest is up to your imagination then. By the way: A pair of slippers can be finished in about 4 hours – and they are really nice and warm! Just in case you have cold winters...

7) Falten, Färben, Faszination. Effektvolles Shibori leichtgemacht, by Annette Kunkel. -- Working with silk every now and then, I just had to try out shibori at some point and found this book a good step-by-step guide for getting into that technique. I'm sure there must be millions of books like that in the US and elsewhere. Shibori is a teachnique for beginners as well as for pros – they go for the more complicated knots and effects then. After you know the basic patterns, you try out your own ideas anyway.

8) Das Neue Handarbeitsbuch -- Everyone who does some kind of needlework has a book that introduces to the basic techniques. This is mine. My mother-in-law has the same and it's at her place where I first saw it. It's old, from the 70s – so old that the patterns it provides are the latest fashion again. For all of you who are planning to take up a hobby – and those who are already an expert in their field agree: get a compendium which gives you an overview right at the beginning. It gives you an idea of what you need to know, it often has some useful advices, and it's usually good inspiration."

9) Fabric Dyeing and Printing, by Kate Wells. -- I got this book from my mother-in-law for my birthday (she used to work as a textile designer before she retired) at the time when I was experimenting with shibori and other techniques a lot. It provides a good overview if you're interested in that topic. I found it quite interesting, even though I just use it as a source of inspiration. I have it in German, of course!

10) Modelling and Sculpting the Human Figure, by Edouard Lanteri. -- Not too long ago I got frustrated with my sculpting skills. Lacking the time (and the money) to attend a class on it, I got this book. It's a bit dull, that's true, but invaluable. It helps me to understand the anatomy of the human body, especially faces, and shows some basic techniques. It's probably too abstract for a beginner, but for those who have already worked with clay, it can be a good help.

Books for the Bathroom

Focus for this List: Yes, there are, in fact, books in every room of my house. This list is for the bookshelf that also holds spare toilet paper. (Note: this is not a list of acceptable substitutes for toilet paper -- that's a different list!) Now, admittedly, the criteria for this list are a bit vague. When we moved, however, I found that certain books just cry out to spend time in the bathroom, being read only occasionally, and in small doses. What's in YOUR bathroom bookshelf?

Books in our Bathroom at the Moment:
1. The Worst Case Scenario Survival Handbook: Travel, by Joshua Piven & David Borgenicht
I've got several books from this series; when I was single, the version in the bathroom was this one. You know, just in case!

2. Edna St. Vincent Millay: Collected Lyrics
This was a library sale treasure, and I'm enjoying finding new gems.

3. How to Shit in the Woods, Second Edition: An Environmentally Sound Approach to a Lost Art, by Kathleen Meyer
Mr. Turkey is an Eagle Scout. Until we were married, I'd never camped outside a day in my life. So, how does a confirmed bookworm confront such a new situation? Yup, we buy books and read them. This one I found particularly well-written. It's earnest tone is endearing, and truly, this is information we should all be passingly familiar with. (Sorry, pardon the pun.)

4. Strain Your Brain: Power Puzzles (Official Mensa Puzzle Book), by Ivan Moscovich
This is quite a colorful, and mind-bending puzzle book. Good for long visits!

5. They Have a Word for It: A Lighthearted Lexicon of Untranslatable Words and Phrases (The Writer's Studio), by Howard Rheingold
This is truly one of my favorite linguistic books. As an exchange student, I noticed how language shapes thought, and vice versa, this book goes one step further and tries to explain such concepts as we do not have in English. Yes, Gemütlichkeit is in there! Now shelved in linguistics.

6. The Quotable South: A Compendium of Eclectic Quotes About the South, compiled by Al Dixon
It's colorful, and it's funny. And then I lived in Raleigh for 4 years. Now I'm not sure if it's funny or tragic, but I know that it's true. Now shelved between linguistics and the travel books.

7. Drinking Coffee Elsewhere, by ZZ Packer
An interesting collection of short stories, this is an enjoyable read. Now shelved in non-fiction.

8. It Was a Dark and Stormy Night: The Best (?) from the Bulwer-Lytton Contest, compiled by Scott Rice
"The funniest opening sentences from the worst novels never written." The bathroom will echo with your howls of laughter and groans of disgust! Do yourself a favor and click on the link in the Author's Name, and enjoy! Now shelved next to my literary classics.

9. Why Do Men Have Nipples? Hundreds of Questions You'd Only Ask a Doctor After Your Third Martini, by Mark Leyner, and Billy Goldberg, M.D.
Ok, so the questions and answers are interesting, but more amusing are the transcribed chat messages back and forth between the two authors. Now shelved in nonfiction.

10. Not Quite What I Was Planning, Revised and Expanded Deluxe Edition: Six-Word Memoirs by Writers Famous and Obscure, edited by Rachel Fershleiser, & Larry Smith
They read like haiku -- intense, and short. (Now shelved in nonfiction, but it may wander back into the bathroom. Writing this blog helps me remember all of my treasures!)

I occasionally do something other than read. No, really, I do! Mind you, when that happens, I frequently go in search of books on the topic. Really! In any case, I hope some of these books will help you get stuff on your list done as well.

Quilting:

1. Quick Quilts to Make in a Weekend, edited by Rosemary Wilkinson
This was the first quilting book that didn't scare me. In fact, I ended up making one quilt loosely based on one of these patterns. It took me about a year to get it done, but then again, it was only my second quilt!

2. Around the Block with Judy Hopkins: 200 Rotary-Cut Blocks in 6 Sizes by Judy Hopkins
This is my favorite reference work on how to make organized quilt blocks without breaking my brain doing math.

3. That Dorky Homemade Look: Quilting Lessons From a Parallel Universe by Lisa Boyer
This is the book that liberated my soul, and gave me the heart to keep quilting.

4. Cut-Loose Quilts: Stack, Slice, Switch, and Sew by Jan Mullen
After Lisa Boyer turned me loose, Jan told me how to make it REALLY interesting!!! :)

Yes, each square is centered by a fussy-cut flamingo doing something at the beach: dancing the flamenco, riding a motorcycle, snorkeling, shopping, etc, etc, etc.

Really, this is a quilting book for how to make the whole thing relaxing. That is, unless you're someone who particularly enjoys parallel lines. Some do!

Gardening:

Mind you, Hubert, the philodendron cuddling up to the poetry and nonfiction shelves, has survived three different moves, and has lived in 4 different cities in 3 different states.

6. Western Garden Book of Edibles: The Complete A-Z Guide to Growing Your Own Vegetables, Herbs, and Fruits by Sunset Publishing

As you can see, we're pretty ambitious for folks living in an arid climate.
This is a photo of the only pepper to actually form and ripen last year. The tomatoes did a fabulous job, and we'll replant them this year, AFTER having consulted our new encyclopedia of plants that Might actually survive here!

I spent a year living in New Mexico recently, and my mother got me involved with watercoloring, which led to a class in painting with acrylic. Only one of the paintings on the wall is mine (the little one that copies the bigger one) but I'm still wildly proud of my efforts! If you, like me, spent all of your electives in music or science class, these two books will help you branch out and explore your artistic side.

10. Treehouses: The Art and Craft of Living Out on a Limb by Peter Nelson

No. I don't have a picture of my treehouse yet. I don't live near any trees that are big enough or sturdy enough, which, most of the time is just fine with me. I tend to feel that most trees are out to get me. (Redliners by David Drake. 'Nuff said)

Still, I read this book with the intensity of someone who is in desperate need of an arboral retreat. So, when the revolution comes, I may be perched in a tree, happily reading a book, and ignoring the rest of the universe. Oh, and blogging!!!

The Library Book Sale

I've discovered, over the years, that one never knows what can be found a library book sale. There is a great little Library Book Store in Roswell, and another just a matter of blocks from our house. This list is a fairly random sampling of the treasures we found! Now, here's the kicker: these are all new books, so I can't offer much in the way of commentary. Rather, this is just a sampling of what we may be reading in the next little bit!

1. Richard Armour: My Life with Women: Confessions of a Domesticated Male
Published in 1968, this is a funny little book with wry commentary, cute illustrations, and amusing verse.

2. Lillian Too: 365 Feng Shui Tips
It was pretty!

3. Azar Nafisi: Reading Lolita in Tehran: A Memoir in Books
I've heard good things about this one.

4. Sue Grafton: 'A' is for Alibi
I'm normally not much of one for reading mysteries, but I think I'll like this protagonist.

5. Visiting Langston by Willie Perdomo and illustrated by Bryan Collier
Gorgeous artwork in this one, with lots of references to his poetry. It is a good conversation starter, and should be a great way to introduce a kid to the poet behind the poetry!

6. The Krazees story by Sam Swope, pictures by Eric Brace
A delightful book to read when you (or your little ones) just can't manage to sit still. The onomatopoeic language is reason enough to buy the book though!

7. Women at War edited by Lois McMaster Bujold, and Roland J. Green
A collection of military sci-fi stories written by women, and edited by one of my favorite authors. What's not to love? I've been enjoying this one already. Among other jewels, it's got Elizabeth Ann Scarborough's story about the beginning of Peytabee (Powers That Be).

8. Langenscheidt Pocket Russian Dictionary
Why? Because Mr. Turkey occasionally plays music by Russian composers, who write notes on the music in Russian. No really, that's our reason, if one needs a reason to buy a cool dictionary!

9. Charlaine Harris: Shakespeare's Trollop
How could I resist that title? Apparently it's a mystery series, with Shakespeare being the name of the town, but still, I had to bring it home!

10. David Korr: Cookie Monster and the Cookie Tree

Ok, so we found this one at a yard sale, not at a library sale, but still, when you find a book from your childhood, it behooves you to give it a good home! (BTW: follow the link on the author's name . . . did YOU know there's a muppet wiki???)

Classics: Lavishly Illustrated Picture Books

Focus for this list: I have a weakness for elaborately illustrated picture books; I also love the classic fairy tales, myths, and legends. This list focuses on the intersection between those two passions. And yes, I do love the Pre-Raphaelite artists.
In this age of Disney and Pixar adaptations, I often wonder if the kids have ever heard the original story. Mind you, these picture books are written as read-alouds, and so your little one probably won't be able to read them independently until late elementary - early middle school. As read-alouds for 1st - 3rd graders, they're fabulous!

1. Snow White as retold and illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman
One of my favorite artists, her very realistically drawn scenes draw one in. If you look closely, you'll usually find someone, or something looking back at you! This is one of my all-time favorite books.

2. Little Red Riding Hood as retold and illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman
This book won the Caldecott Honor Medal in 1984, and remains my favorite take on that tale.

3. Rapunzel as retold by Barbara Rogasky, illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman
This is the classic version, with the eyes and the twin babies. Having read some of Jane Yolen's commentary on the story, I see it a bit differently now.

4. The Sleeping Beauty as retold and illustrated by Trina Schart Hyman
Did I mention that she's one of my favorite artists? I meant it! She also does a wonderful job of retelling the stories using language that is clear, and yet complex enough to retain the beauty of the story.

5. The Twelve Dancing Princesses as retold by Marianna Mayer, and illustrated by K. Y. Craft
See? This isn't just a list of gorgeous books by T.S.H. really, it isn't! If you've not heard of this story, you're missing out. Enjoy!

6. Tam Lin as retold by Jane Yolen, and illustrated by Charles Mikolaycak
Of all the fairy tales, I think this one is perhaps the spookiest. It's also one of my favorites as it hinges on the bravery of the female protagonist. Jane Yolen has a talent for breathing life into these stories that few can match.

7. Cupid and Psyche as told by M. Charlotte Craft and illustrated by K.Y. Craft
It's one of those stories that you're supposed to learn, perhaps by osmosis. This book illustrates it powerfully.

8. The Mightiest Heart by Lynn Cullen, illustrated by Laurel Long
This is a tragic but beautiful Welsh legend, retold. Dog lovers, beware, this one will make you weep.

9. Baba Yaga and Vasilisa the Brave as told by Marianna Mayer and illustrated by K.Y. Craft
This has the most (delightfully) horrifying portrait of Baba Yaga I've ever seen. If you're going to read it to a child, though, keep in mind that the beginning is rather terrifying, and that it gets better.

10. The Dancing Pig by Judy Sierra and illustrated by Jesse Sweetwater
This retelling of a classic Balinese story is just charming. I'm trying to track down other books illustrated by Jesse Sweetwater. Enjoy!

1. FreeRice Game
Not only is it a fun game, and mildly addictive, it's also a way of doing good in the world and helping get rice donated to the World Food Programme.

2. Basic Bento
Get inspiration for packing your lunch, without being overwhelmed! This is functional bento at its best. Also, if you read this post, you'll see she's doing something nifty for her blogiversary!

3. Charity Navigator
With all that's been going on, it's easy to feel that there's nothing we can do. This website helps you find charitites that use your money wisely and effectively.
Direct Relief International
Speaking of charities, I found this one on the Charity Navigator yesterday and was wildly impressed. The review from someone about how they helped during Hurricane Katrina was particularly influential in helping me decide where to donate.

4. Kiva
My sister got us all involved with this one -- it's a way to make microloans pretty much directly to someone who desperately needs the help and has a plan for repaying you. What I love is that you are completely in control of choosing where your money goes. It's almost as satisfying as giving in person.

5. SparkPeople
So now let's talk about YOU. This totally free website has lots of cool tools and ways to help you achieve your goals, whatever they may be. It's also a really nice online community. Enjoy!

6. SmartMoney
This is quite an informative blog, with real meat to their stories. Amazingly, it still remains a fun read.

7. Slate, Salon, NPR, and sometimes The Daily Show
These are the answers to the question of where I get my news!

Some travel a lot, and some rarely do. This list is for both sorts. I've divided it up into books to read before you go, and books you'll use once you're there. Hey, if the budget isn't there for travels at the moment, this will at least get you started preparing for when you can travel!

Books to Read at Home:
1. A Rough Guide Special: First-Time Europe
I bought this for my third trip to Europe and found it to be a wonderful resource as I was organizing everything for a solo month-long trip. Check and make sure you get the most up-to-date version. In fact, I'd recommend just about any book by this publisher. They tend to organize the information in a way that I like.

2. A Woman Alone: Travel Tales from Around the Globe edited by Faith Conlon, Ingrid Emerick & Christina Henry De Tessan
From triumphs to disasters, this is a fabulous armchair read. It'll inspire you to do more than you think you can!

3. The Worst-Case Scenario Survival Handbook: Travel by Joshua Piven & David Borgenicht
While this is written by a variety of experts, I find it more amusing than anything else. In our home, this lives in the bathroom. Yes, I have a bookshelf in the bathroom. Doesn't everyone?

4. The National Geographic Traveler: Rome
This is a fabulously well-written, and beautifully illustrated guide book. I'd recommend reading it a home before you go. It's got some nice walks, and might be very handy, but the information is dense enough that reading it before you're on the plane would be helpful.

5. Paris Made Easy: The Best Walks and Sights of Paris

I read this one as research before I went, and yet, I don't remember pulling it out while I was there. It does have lots of maps, and some recommended walks, as well as good information. Yet, once I was there, I just closed the books and explored.

Items to Take With You (keeping in mind that I'm recommending publishers & series as much as I'm recommending individual books):

6. The Rough Guide Phrasebook: German or the French version, or the Latin American Spanish version
I own all three of these, and absolutely love them. They are easy to use, easy to pack, and extraordinarily well organized. They've got common phrases, then scenarios, and then two-way dictionaries. Fabulous series! The Just Enough Italian: How to Get By and Be Easily Understood, was also nice, but I would have preferred a Rough Guide Italian book.

7. Rough Guide Map: Venice
Why yes, I do have a favorite publisher, when it comes to traveling! This waterproof map of Venice didn't keep me from getting lost (which was just delightful!) but it did help keep me somewhat oriented so that I felt safe being lost. Absolutely worth its weight in gold!
8. InsideOut: New York
I bought this for the fabulous pop-out maps, and then ended up enjoying it for the guide book and the built-in compass in the spine of the book. No, really. When you're coming up out of the subway, that's a life-saver!

9. Handy AZ Map: Central London
Now THIS is a map. Seriously, it has everything in it, which comes in quite useful, particularly when one is walking. Keep in mind, the British Museum isn't easy to find, despite the size. Trust me, you'll need a map!

10. DK: Top 10 San Francisco
The guidebook we read before we left, to sort out what the highlights were that we absolutely wanted to see while on our honeymoon. The pull-out and fold-out maps we used every day during our wanderings. This is also how we found our inexpensive, close-to-everything bed and breakfast. Fabulous value, and easy to toss into a bag!

For When Disaster Strikes

Focus for this List:
I can't stop a nuclear meltdown, hold back the waves, or stop the earth from shaking. I can't cure death, heal broken promises, or restore lost innocence. What I can do is list books that help when the disaster comes. Because disasters always come.

1. Viktor Frankl: Man's Search for Meaning
What does a holocaust survivor know about the reasons to live? Lots and lots. I reviewed this book in this post. It's one of those books that everyone should read.

2. Kahlil Gibran: The Prophet
Poetry that speaks truth about life. My mother gave it to me when I turned 16 and I still reread it and find new truths that I wasn't able to understand earlier.

3. Laurence Gonzales: Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why
This is a more practical guide, in some ways, but it's also a work of philosophy. His rules for survival are useful, in a disaster in the woods, in a classroom, and in a home. That, and the way he tells a story is just riveting!

4. Simon Wiesenthal: The Sunflower: On the Possibilities and Limits of Forgivness
Speaking of disasters, what about when someone has "done you wrong?" Do you forgive them? At what point? After what proof that they've changed? Yeah, I thought some of those questions might sound familiar. This book tells a fairly simple, but thought-provoking story. Then it asks a simple question. The rest of the book is composed of answers to that question, by 53 different people. Who are these people? Some names you'll recognize, others will be new, but they truly have 53 different answers to the question. By the end of the book, you may have some answers too.

5. Rabbi Earl Grollman: Living When a Loved One Has Died
This book was the only one that spoke to me when Rivka died. I've since, sadly, had occasion to give it to others who've also suffered losses. It helped, when nothing else did. One small note: it may seem silly, but those of us who've been there know how your concentration is affected. The author knows this too, and writes in very short sentences. At a time in my life when I couldn't even read for comfort, this helped.

Note: it's a short list today, but the weight of each book should make up for that.

For Comfort While Facing a Storm

Focus for this List: A dear friend of mine asked for a list of books that would be light, fun reads, with minimal romance. My friend is going through a really challenging time, and so, I also recommended some books that I've found helpful when the world comes crashing down. E, this list is for you.

Nonfiction that has Saved My Sanity (more than once):
1. Laurence Gonzales: Deep Survival: Who Lives, Who Dies, and Why
This is far more than a book on how not to die while camping -- it's a survival guide for life. No, really. In fact, it's a bit of a genre-spawning book, and one that is quite readable. Skip the overly science-filled parts if you wish, but focus on the lessons. They're essential.

2. Viktor Frankl: Man's Search for Meaning
A small book, it is, in fact, the most truth-filled and helpful guide to living I've ever encountered. Written by a psychologist who survived the Holocaust, this is a guide to living with meaning, even when it all seems meaningless.
And here's an official recommendation by someone other than me, "According to a survey conducted by the Book-of-the-Month Club and the Library of Congress, Man's Search For Meaning belongs to a list of "the ten most influential books in [the United States]." (New York Times, November 20, 1991)." Thanks, Wikipedia!

It's a good book, and I think it will help. Please read it?

Nonfiction that's just fun to read:
3. C. S. Lewis: On Stories: and Other Essasy on Literature
Yes, I read C.S. Lewis for comfort - don't you? :)

4. Jane Yolen: Touch Magic: Fantasy, Faerie & Folklore in the Literature of Childhood
I'm not sure why faery-tales came so strongly to mind, E, when I was making this list for you, but they did. Thus, my favorite collection of essays by one of my favorite authors. In particular, I think the essay titled, "The Mask on the Lapel" will speak to you. Page 53 in my book.

Fiction for You:
5. Jane Yolen: Twelve Impossible Things Before Breakfast
Well, I could hardly let you escape without reading some of her fiction too, eh? They are short stories for when that's all the time you've got!

6. Louis Sachar: Holes
Some would say this is a book for teens and pre-teens. I say that it's a modern fairytale with points to touch us all. That, and it's set in West Texas. You'll like it.

7. William Saroyan: My Name is Aram
Another collection of short stories -- I find Saroyan's writing style to be uniquely calming -- almost a literary balm, at least for me! You'll enjoy Aram; I think you'll recognize your boys in some of his stories!

8. William Saroyan: The Human Comedy
This is on my personal top-ten of all-time list. I first read it when wildly homesick as an exchange student in Germany. I allowed myself to read only one chapter a night, and yes, that's how I survived that January.

9. Robert Heinlein: The Green Hills of Earth
Short stories to take you away, make you think, change your perspective, and leave you laughing, these are some of the best.

10. Spider Robinson: Callahan's Crosstime Saloon
If all else fails, read this book (and its friends) until you're helpless with laughter and the light seems brighter. I've linked it to the Kindle edition for faster access! Why this book? Because shared pain is lessened, and shared joy is increased. Yes, that's a quote. Go on now, you'll love it!

Pregnancy & Parenting Resources, by Quabbin

Quabbin, an avid non-fiction reader, is the mother of a three-year-old.

Honestly, I can't recommend any pregnancy books out there. I haven't seen any with valuable information that's not in a zillion places on the internet. Join your local TheMommiesNetwork.com affiliate, check out BabyFit.com and use common sense.
Okay, you really can't do without a printed book? William and Martha Sears have one; I haven't read it but I've found them pretty trustworthy--they're a doctor and nurse, and they do have six kids. If you're interested in avoiding unnecessary perinatal interventions, read Pushed by Jennifer Block--but not too close to your due date, because it's a little scary.

Since you do have more time to read before your little one arrives than after, though, I recommend reading lots of parenting books while you're expecting. There are so many books available that you could literally start reading the day you find out you're pregnant and not be done by the kid's high school graduation. Here's a start:

If you don't fancy dinnertime battles or caving to the chicken-nuggets-and-Lunchables lifestyle, Child of Mine by Ellyn Satter is a great guide to child nutrition and feeding.

The Happiest Toddler on the Block by Harvey Karp is brilliant. Unless you have the most easygoing child on the planet, this is a must-read--and one to keep so you can refer to it a lot. (A lot of people recommend The Happiest Baby on the Block as well.) If you later notice your child is... high-maintenance (trust me, you'll know by his or her second birthday!), see also Raising Your Spirited Child by Mary Sheedy Kurcinka.

Curious about Attachment Parenting? The Attachment Parenting Book (William & Martha Sears) is the definitive guide; think of it as a menu, not a set of commandments.

Diaper-Free Before Three by Jill Lekovic is quite good. If you plan to work full-time, though, this won't work for you.

Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv. A thought-provoking look at why kids today have a "nature-deficit" problem, why it matters and what to do about it.

You may be spending several months (or with a high-needs baby and little family support nearby, even years) in survival mode, so think now about your intentions for your child's moral development. Several books that raise interesting ideas or methods:

The Good Son by Michael Gurian;

A Family of Value by John Rosemond (I didn't care for the excessively political foreword, but the core of the book is practical);

The Virtues Guide by Linda Kavelin Popov, Dan Popov and John Kavelin.

The Moral Compass and other William Bennett collections of little stories make great family read-alouds.

The book I wish someone had handed me the day my baby was born (thirty-seven days early): any premature baby book. You don't need to run out and buy one if you're not expecting your baby to be a preemie, but definitely know how to get your hands on a copy of the Sears' or some other preemie guide quickly, because earlybirds are not just smaller versions of a standard-issue newborn. (Does your library carry some? Your closest bookstore?) Don't count on the hospital to educate you. Likewise, be able to get a copy of The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding and know how to reach your local La Leche League chapter and/or a couple of lactation consultants.

You may notice there's nothing here about sleep. That is because no sleep book was helpful for us (and when I read Raising Your Spirited Child, I saw I was not alone!).A run-down of the big names:

Some people swear by The No-Cry Sleep Solution by Elizabeth Pantley (if you read one of her books, you've read them all); it might've been useful if I'd read it sooner.

Marc Weissbluth's Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child did not work for us.

The Baby Whisperer was not compatible with my baby!

The Ferber method just seems unnatural to me--but if you're going to use it, at least read the book first!

Babywise seemed borderline crazy (but the Ezzos' toddler book is surprisingly sensible).

Polly Moore's The 90-Minute Baby Sleep Program looks promising, though I can't vouch for it personally.

Read all you like, find a pediatrician you trust, and by all means be informed--but some of your most important parenting lessons will come from your children. Pay attention and you will learn all the time. :)

YA Classics

1. J. K. Rowling: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (Series)
If you're one of the few hold-outs who haven't read this series, try them! I think you'll enjoy them more than you think you will. The characters and events are now such a part of our cultural meme that, really, everyone should read the books. For those who've already read and loved the books, click on her name and enjoy the massively wonderful author's website!

2. Louis Sachar: Holes
This is quite an engaging book, that verges on poetic at moments. Impressive achievements for a book about boys on in a West Texas punishment camp!

3. Cornelia Funke: The Thief Lord
I love the magical realism of this book. The only thing that made it better? Actually going to Venice! :)

4. Eoin Colfer: Artemis Fowl (series)
Who doesn't love an evil genius, even when he's just a teen? Oh yes, this is a series that'll make you laugh and keep you reading. Enjoy!

5. Lois Lowry: The Giver
This utopia/dystopia is a wildly good read. English teachers glommed on to it a bit, but feel free to go back and reread it from an older perspective. This is one book that ages really well.

6. Jerry Spinelli: Stargirl
I don't really know what to say about this one other than, read it!

7. Carl Hiaasen: Hoot
Set in Florida, and focusing on odd characters and an environmental issue, as do most of his books, this Newberry winner is a fabulous read.

8. Gordon Korman: No More Dead Dogs
This excellent little book is for all of us who HATED the fact that the dog always dies in the books the English teachers assign. Old Yeller, Little Ann, Old Dan, Sounder, this book is for you!

9. Rick Riordan: The Lightning Thief (series)
Following in the Harry Potter genre, this wildly readable series is based in the idea that the Greek gods never really changed their ways. And yes, this includes their predilection for creating half-gods (aka: Heroes).

10. Orson Scott Card: Ender's Game (series)
This book is my favorite example of how marketing can affect how you see a book. It's got two covers and is placed in two areas of the bookstore:
The Teen Version: (kid in space suit? check!)
The Adult Sci-Fi Version: (mysterious spaceship? check!)

That said, it is destined to become a classic in the genre (if it isn't already). Mind you, the deeper you go into the series, the harder you have to think, as it focuses increasingly on philosophy. The first book in the series though? Sheer genius!

Focus for this list:
I'm not a huge fan of the Young Adult label for books. A good book is a good book, and teens don't deserve to have their fiction watered down. That said, I can understand that creating a transitional section is helpful for parents wishing to shield their kids a bit as they move from chapter books to adult novels. So, this list is the best of the section (IMHO) and I'd encourage everyone to read these books, as they've all got something important to say about humanity. That, and they're ferociously good reads!
