The annual canned food drive is rapidly approaching. We will be collecting non-perishable foods and donations made by cash or check during the week of March 8th - 12th.

The last couple of weeks have been filled with Variety Show auditions. The judging team was amazed at all of the talent that Forest Park students possess. It is going to be difficult to narrow down all of the choices to just 25 acts.
If your student was one that tried out, he or she can expect to find out if they made it into the final show on Friday, February 5th. A letter will be sent home with the student at the end of the day on Friday. If your student does not receive a note, please e-mail me and I would be happy to let you know.
Thankfully the students who do not make it into the final will still have their opportunity to shine. The auditions were video taped and the acts will be edited together and shown in the classrooms later this school year.
The 3rd Annual Variety Show will be held in the gym on Thursday, March 18th at 1:00 pm.
Classroom guidance is under way. I have made it to most classrooms twice now. We have spent the first couple of lessons brainstorming/reviewing the school rules. Students from second through fifth grade made posters and signs for us to hang around the school. This will make sure that the whole school is following the same set of rules. When you are in the building, look for posters around the school.
As a part of the rules conversation, we also came up with some general rules for different playground games and activities. Soon you will be able to find signs up that help explain the various activities. If your child is still not sure how to play a game outside at recess, please encourage him or her to find a peer mediator who can help.
For the next couple of months the classroom guidance lessons will focus on emotions/feeling words. At the K/1 level we will be learning how to read facial expressions and how we should react to each one. For the 2/3s we will be learning synonyms for the basic emotion words in order to better describe our feelings. The 4th and 5th graders will also be working on developing synonyms and antonyms for feeling words, but diving in a bit deeper.
You might notice some papers coming home with your student. Please engage your student in a conversation about the lesson. If you have any questions for me, please feel free to ask!

It has been a busy, but great, start to the school year. I have started classroom guidance lessons in everyone's classroom, the peer mediators are trained up and ready to start their jobs this next week and we had our first successful school spirit day of the year on Friday
Small groups will be starting soon. Please let me know if you think your student could benefit from small group time with other students who might be having similar struggles. I work with small groups of students to help foster friendships as well as groups that help kids through family transitions (separation, divorce, etc.). I would be happy to talk to you about your child's specific needs.

The last school spirit day is upon us, so don't forget to go big for this one. Each classroom is coming up with a theme for their class to wear this Friday. Once that is decided, see what you can pull out of your closet and drawers to show off how much classroom and school spirit you have!
For those of you who tried out for the Second Annual Variety Show, thank you so much for all of the hard work. There were over 50 acts trying out, and over 90 students participated.
The Variety Show Team, composed of six teachers, spend many hours deliberating. Though the final list could not accommodate all of the students, we believe we have found a good mix of grade levels, group size, and types of acts.
For those students who did not make it this year, please keep planning and practicing for next year. And remember, your act will be seen in the classrooms via channel 54 once the video has been put together.
Students who did make it into the final show this year, please remember that there are deadlines approaching, so refer to your timeline that you received last week in order to meet those deadlines. Also, please let me know if there is a rehearsal that you are not going to be able to make it to so we can plan for that.

If your student has turned in a Variety Show application, please expect to see an Audition Reminder slip coming home this Friday. The auditions are scheduled to end by 3:30 each day, however, please understand that in order to get all of the acts through the audition process, we might run over time a bit. Once your student has auditioned, and you are here to pick him or her up (or they are walking), they may leave.
As another reminder, the Variety Show Committee has decided to make the auditions "closed to the public." This means that a few acts at a time will be brought into the library and asked to perform. Other students, siblings, and parents are not able to watch the auditions. If you want to wait for your student to finish performing, you can meet him or her inside of the gym when the audition is complete.

The much awaited Variety Show is getting ready to kick off. Be looking for applications to be sent home this Friday. If you are thinking about doing an act, your application must be turned in by the end of the day on Dec. 12th. If you are putting together a group act, please remember that ALL members of your group must have their applications turned in by the deadline in order to audition.
Start practicing now and use Winter Break as a time to put some extra work into your performance because auditions will be held in January.
Don't forget, if you are interested in trying out, that you must still be in town March 20th (The day before Spring Break) and that you are able to make it to a few after school practices.
