If you want a site or blog (or both) that you can grow with over the years, Wordpress is the CMS to go with. I would not give it another thought. It's actually a great solution for non-technical people once it's been setup and customized. I highly recommend it.

Don't ask me why, but I just love dragonfly jewelry. I can't tell you exactly why. It's not like I'm educated on the symbolism of the dragonfly. I'm sure its something meaningful - I just don't know what it is. I also can't say I'm a bug lover. In fact, I HATE bugs. Detest them.

But dragonfly art & dragonfly jewelry... etc - totally different thing. I'm also fond of butterfly designs and lately I've seen some owl designs I find interesting.

Deadly Buttock Injections?

Why anyone would trust someone to inject them in the behind with silicone is beyond my comprehension -- especially if its not a doctor. Today's news featured a story of popularity of these procedures being performed across the country.

The procedure is illegal. No surprise really. Can you imagine someone injecting silicone gel from the hardware store in your behind? It is a toxic substance.

In recent news, two women from the UK flew to the US to receive illegal “buttocks-enhancement injections.” After receiving syringes and an “unknown drug” in a hotel near the airport, one of the women died. Police are now searching for two other women who allegedly provided the drugs.

Buttocks enhancement? Really, how about some exercise?

After more than 50 years on the air, CBS had made the final decision to cancel As the World Turn.

Unreal. Actually, to be honest, I thought this soap opera had already been cancelled years ago and I had no clue it had been on the air for quite so many years. More than 50 years, 54 to be exact!! Wow.

This show does remember of the good old days staying home from school just to watch it. Apparently I stayed home from school a lot, because i have very vivid memories of watching this show. Maybe it came on after school?

CBS has announced that the final episode will air in September of next year. The biggest shocker is that The Bold and the Beautiful is still alive and kicking.

A couple of years ago, I tried out a cool tool on the Instyle Magazine website that allowed you to get an idea of how you would look with different hair styles. I had so much fun seeing myself with all kinds of hair sytles.

This same tool is now available for free online. It's called the HairStyler.com and it's a ton of fun. This is great for ladies trying to figure out what the perfect bridal hair should be.

I tried this out when I was considering the idea of getting bangs... ok, this helped me realize quickly that bangs were a definite no-no for me. I suppose you could say it saved me from a hair nightmare, though I like to think my sisters would have stopped me.

I have to admit I also learned a lot about what kind of hair styles go with your face shape and hair type.

Miss Dominican Republic Wins 2nd Place

Well, DR, we almost won the Miss Universe contest last night.

Unfortunately, the key word here is almost... Miss Dominican Republic, Ada Aymee, appeared to be the favored winner until she failed to properly respond to the last question.

What a let down! She was sooo close. She seemed really nervous and probably did not understand the question -- thus the irrelevant answer.

It would have been so great to have a darker skin Dominican win the crown. I just can't believe how many self-hating people there are on this island... who fail to see beauty of our natural brown skin tones.

Here's a quick example of what I mean. This comment was posted in the comment section of a local daily paper (El Diario Libre):

Milagros70 Ya miss universo a caido muy bajo, ya que anteriormente era un concurso de BELLEZA, no cualidades y si es un concurso de BELLEZA, es la BELLEZA que se tiene que evaluar no cualidades, ahora hasta negritas y morenitas ganan y no porque sean negritas o morenitas sino por FEAS.

How ignorant.

(Note, I say "our brown skin tone" but i must admit, i was not blessed with the natural brown skin tone myself, but i digress.)

I joined Mia Mariu last year and realized I had more fun blogging about the company and product than actually selling the product... so here I am.

I also noticed that I received a lot more traffic from people interested in learning more about Dominican hair products and hair care. Since, I'm now living in DR and I do after all frequent the local salons, I'll be devoting more time and space to the topic. Look forward to more posts about anything and everything related to Dominican hair. =)

P.S. - If you are interested in Mia Mariu, I can most definitely point you in the right direction. I no longer keep my Mia Mariu website because there is a monthly cost (which makes absolutely NO sense).

Dominican Hair Terminology

Here are three key terms you´ll need to know before visiting a Dominican salon near you.

El "Toobie" or "Doobie"

After your hair is blow-dried straight, ask your stylist to wrap and pin your hair around your head and cover it with this scarf to protect strands and keep them flat. This will keep your hair straight longer. Ask for it by name. Some call it a Doobie with a "D".

The Famous "Rolos"

After a good wash your hair is rolled up in a big old rolo. Once done, you´re placed under a hood dryer (secador) until your hair is dry, before it´s blown straight with a hair dryer. Having rolos done is a great option because it exposes your hair to less heat and prevents damaged hair. Be aware that your hair will tend to curl up (or down) after a while. I personally love the rolo look, because my hair turns out smoother, shinier and wavier (and overalll more natural looking). However, I have no patience for sitting under the dryer. I have way too much hair and it takes FOREVER for my hair to dry all the way.

El "Flip"

(pronounced fleep): When the stylist asks you if you want your blow-out "con flip" , she´s asking if you want your hair to curve upwards. This will give your hair more body and bounce.

Starting your own business or joining a network marketing company?

So often I am asked why I decided to join a network marketing company instead of just starting my own business. Let me explain...

In order to start a traditional brick and mortar business you need a few things that I do not presently have including start-up capital or excellent credit. Yes, I was one of the morons who took up the credit card companies up on their ever so generous offers during college. Big mistake. I swear that should be illegal. Anyhow, I digress.

I did think about, don't get me wrong. I even ordered a free credit report to see how my credit had improved since I started slowly but surely working out all the issues on there.
But start-up capital I did not have, nor was I willing to borrow. So I set off on my journey to start a business (actually several micro businesses) on the so-called shoestring budget.

Network marketing has been more of a side project for me. This has allowed me to learn about marketing to Hispanics and witnessed the interest level in a product specifically designed for Latina women (more about that later). My main income sources come from other online businesses that I started with just a site and have grown over the years. I also do a little affiliate marketing here and there - though this is a new project for me. (and fun as heck!)

So there you have it. No brick and mortar business for me anytime soon. I shall stick to web-based virtual enterprises that allow me to work from anywhere in the world.

I grew up in the DR going to the salon with my mom practically every week. During those times I remember using Dominican products on our hair and eventually switching over to foreign brands like Sebastian, Kerastasse and Paul Mitchell.

When I moved to the US I noticed that many people loved Dominican hair products. It surprised me really, since in the DR it seemed most people who could would opt for a foreign made hair product instead. But then again, that may be because Dominicans tend to assume that anything foreign is better than local. (Sad but true).

Kristin Davis Launches New Line Designed by Dominican Sully Bonnelly

DominicanToday.com recently reported that Kristin Davis, famous for her role as Charlotte in the hit series ‘Sex and the City’ will launch her own line by Dominican fashion designer Sully Bonnelly.

The line is slated to arrive in stores within two weeks and was created taking into account the actress’ tastes, said the news service Efe today quoting Bonnelly, creative director of the company "Muse," which will supply the fashion line to the market.

Kristin’s character in the series inspired much of the designs. Bonelly claims they look alike adding that "she’s just a bit more modern than her character."

I love seeing my fellow Dominicans in the news in a positive light.
