Come ogni anno, anche il 2019 ha visto la realizzazione della mostra degli studenti dell'Istituto Lorenzo De' Medici di Firenze, in piazza San Lorenzo.

A differenza di quanto si possa pensare, pur essendo una mostra dei lavori degli studenti della scuola, il numero delle opere in mostra (circa 400), l'eterogeneità dei pezzi, il pochissimo tempo a disposizione e la difficoltà di realizzare un allestimento all'esterno, in una piazza importante come quella di San Lorenzo, a Firenze, ne fanno un progetto decisamente impegnativo.

La fatica del nostro studio e del corpo docenti dell'Istituto, viene però ripagata dai sorrisi e dalla soddisfazione degli studenti che, provenienti da tutto il mondo, porteranno nel loro Paese, il ricordo di aver esposto il proprio lavoro in uno dei luoghi più belli d'Italia.

Un ufficio low-buget a Firenze

(ENG): Also this year was held the usual exhibition organized by the Lorenzo De' Medici Institute, which rewards the most worthy students.
It was an intense and difficult day that put a lot of pressure on the setup and the people.

My sincere thanks go to all the LdM staff and teachers who made a great effort for the success of the event.

(ITA): Anche quest'anno si è tenuta la consueta mostra organizzata dall'Istituto Lorenzo De' Medici, che premia gli studenti più meritevoli.
E' stata una giornata intensa e difficile che ha messo a dura prova l'allestimento e le persone.
Il mio sincero ringraziamento va a tutto lo staff e ai docenti della LdM che si sono impegnati al massimo per la riuscita dell'evento.

Space Architecture in Naples, Italy | Architettura Spaziale a Napoli

(ITA). Si è concluso il 9 Dicembre scorso una interessante iniziativa dell'Italian Institute for the Future di Napoli riguardo alle "Utopie del Domani".

Il tema dell'incontro verteva sulle utopie, non solo architettoniche e le città del futuro.
Grazie alla sapiente regia di Roberto Paura e i preziosi contributi di Daniele Vazquez Pizzi e Massimo Pica Ciamarra, sono stati toccati molti temi di grande importanza.

Il mio intervento si è concentrato sugli attuali progetti di ESA e NASA per la costruzione di un insediamento umano sulla Luna e su Marte nei prossimi anni e le tecnologie messe in campo. Il tema è molto vasto e sempre più complesso man mano che nuovi protagonisti si affacciano sulla scena mondiale. La nascita di nuove agenzie spaziali, pubbliche e private e ulteriori scoperte astronomiche, aprono scenari mai immaginati prima d'ora rendendo possibile ciò che abbiamo considerato sempre come "fantascienza".

Tuttavia siamo esseri umani, legati alla Terra e al suo ecosistema ed è a questo che molti scienziati guardano quando sviluppano nuove metodologie. L'approccio biomimetico è presente nella tecnologia aerospaziale più di quanto non si immagini, basta sapere dove guardare.

Dobbiamo, inoltre aspettarci, nei prossimi anni, un inevitabile tranfer tecnologico dall'architettura spaziale a quella terrestre, in controtendenza rispetto a quello che accade oggi. Grazie alla lezione extra-terrestre, c'è da augurarsi che, oltre ai materiali e alla tecnologia, ci sia un ritorno sempre maggiore alla sostenibilità, al rispetto dei luoghi, al risparmio di suolo e di risorse su questa Terra.

(ENG). It was concluded on December 9 an interesting initiative of the Italian Institute for the Future of Naples about the "Tomorrow's Utopias".
The topic of the meeting concerned the utopias, (not only the architectural ones) and the cities of the future.
Thanks to the skillful direction of Roberto Paura and the valuable contributions of Daniel Vazquez Pizzi and Massimo Pica Ciamarra, many very important issues have been touched.
My speech focused on current NASA's and ESA's projects for the construction of a human settlement on the Moon and on Mars in the coming years and the related technologies.
The subject is vast and increasingly complex as new protagonists face the world stage every day. The born of new space agencies, public and private, and more astronomical discoveries, are opening un-imagined scenarios before making possible what we have always regarded as "science fiction.
However, we are human beings, related to the Earth and its ecosystem and that is what many scientists look at when developing new methodologies. The biomimetic approach is in the aerospace technology more than you can imagine, just know where to look.
We should also expect, in the coming years, an inevitable technological tranfer from space architecture to the earth's one, in contrast with what happens today. Thanks to the extra-terrestrial lesson is to be hoped that, in addition to materials and technology, there'll be a new return to sustainability, respect for places, soil-saving and resources, here on this Earth.

This original illustration do not have a white border and it is suitable for framing with or without a mount. The image covers the entire surface of the poster, however it is concentrated in its center. Printed image size and total paper size comes in three different sizes: 70x70 cm (27,5x 27,5 in), 50x50 cm (19,7x19,7 in) or 45x45 cm (17,7x17,7 in) . Final image doesn't have watermark.

Art is in the Square, 10th Edition - The video

(ENG). A really, entirely sustainable exhibit for the 10th edition of "Art is in the Square", the annual students' work exhibition of the Lorenzo de' Medici Institute.
All the wooden structures are coming from previous exhibitions and are very light and easy to assemble and dismountle.
Due the bad weather conditions, they were moved from an exterior location, into the LdM's Library and in the Fuligno's porch, packing all in one single truck and handle by just three men.

(ITA). Un allestimento davvero ed interamente sostenibile per la 10ma edizione di "Art is in the Square", l'annuale mostra dei lavori degli studenti dell'Istituto Lorenzo de' Medici.
Tutte le strutture in legno provengono da precedenti mostre, sono estremamente leggere e facili da montare e smontare.
A causa delle cattive condizioni atmosferiche, le strutture sono state spostate dall'esterno, dove era prevista inizialmente la mostra, negli spazi interni della scuola e nel chiostro del Fuligno, caricando il tutto su un singolo furgone, con il lavoro di soli tre operatori.

Monument's Death

(ITA). La Morte del Monumento

Si è concluso recentemente il concorso di idee indetto dal Comune di Carpi (MO) per la progettazione delle nuove porte della città. Stanchi dell'architettura autoreferenziale e celebrativa, abbiamo deciso che il concetto dell'”Arco di Trionfo” era ormai inaccettabile. Abbiamo quindi preferito disegnare un “pezzo di città” che fosse funzionale e utile agli abitanti nella vita di tutti i giorni. La proposta si basa sulla massima sostenibilità progettuale e costruttiva, evitando qualsiasi velleità monumentale ma rimanendo nell'ambito di un intervento riconoscibile con cui sia facile relazionarsi.

(ENG.) Monument's Death

The competition organized by the Municipality of Carpi (Italy), for the design of new city gates, has recently concluded. Tired about self-celebratory architecture, we decided that the concept of "Arc de Triomphe" was no longer acceptable. We then preferred to design a "part of city" that was functional and useful to people in their everyday life. The proposal is based on the maximum design and construction's sustainability, avoiding any monumental ambitions, remaining within a recognizable shape with which it is easy to relate to.

(ENG.)...and now is 10!

The LdM Institute reached this important goal with the tenth edition of its annual Student Exhibition. This year, due the bad weather conditions, the exhibition was organized indoor, in two amazing LdM locations.

Like the last year, MSa has developed a completely sustainable project, using only the existing material and, when it was necessary, adding just the same tipe of wood and assembly. All the structures are modular, light and very easy to assembly and dismountle and the entire exhibition's elements can be positioned very quickly by few people.

(ITA) ...e sono 10!

L'Istituto LdM ha raggiunto l'importante traguardo della decima edizione dell'annuale mostra degli studenti della scuola.

A causa delle cattive condizioni meteorologiche, quest'anno la mostra si è svolta al chiuso, tuttavia è stata l'occasione per fa conoscere due meravigliosi spazi della scuola.

Come per l'anno scorso, anche quest'anno l'allestimento è stato sviluppato in maniera completamente sostenibile, in quanto è stato utilizzato solo il materiale esistente aggiungendo, quando necessario, elementi dello stesso tipo e con lo stesso sistema di assemblaggio.

Tutte le strutture sono modulari, leggere e molto facili da assemblare e smontare. L'intero allestimento può essere montato molto velocemente con l'utilizzo di poche persone.

Space Colonialism | Are we destined to live beyond Earth?

ENG. A new project, too long delayed, is born: the analysis of the relationship between space and terrestrial architecture. What are the projects currently studied and the technologies developed for the next "giant leap for mankind"?

About that is this text talking, passing through materials, techniques and styles of the new Space Colonialism.

"What does the future hold? The human race is destined to colonize new planets and adapt them to its needs? This is what the great writers of the past have imagined.

Isaac Asimov, scientist and author of the famous "Cycle of Foundation", imagined a human civilization that has spread over the millennia, across the Galaxy, settling on thousands of planets ruled by a Galactic Empire with its capital on the planet Trantor.

Trantor has the role of administering and controlling the entire Empire, hosting billion of people, bureaucrats, officials in a totally constructed scene where the entire planet's surface is covered by building's metal.

These human beings of the future have forgotten their origins and the memory of the planet Earth survives only in some ancient legends and fairy tales for children.

If our destiny is really to leave our beloved blue planet and venture into the Cosmos, we have to remember to look back and take a last look at our home, just before it disappears into the depths of Space and Time, forever."

ITA. Finalmente si concretizza un progetto troppo a lungo rimandato: l'analisi del rapporto tra l'architettura spaziale e quella terrestre. Quali sono i progetti attualmente allo studio e le tecnologie sviluppate per il prossimo grande passo per l'Umanità?

E' quello di cui parla il testo, passando in rassegna materiali, tecniche e stili del nuovo Colonialismo Spaziale.

"Cosa ci riserva il futuro? La razza umana è destinata a colonizzare nuovi pianeti e adattarli alle proprie esigenze? E' quello che i grandi scrittori del passato hanno immaginato.

Isaac Asimov, scienziato ed autore nel famoso "Ciclo della Fondazione", immagina una civiltà umana che si è espansa, nei millenni, in tutta la Galassia, insediandosi su migliaia di pianeti governati da un Impero Galattico con capitale sul pianeta Trantor.

Trantor ha lo scopo di amministrare e controllare tutto l'Impero, ospitando miliardi di persone, burocrati, funzionari in uno scenario totalmente costruito dove l'intera superficie del pianeta è ricoperta dal metallo degli edifici. Questi esseri umani del futuro hanno dimenticato le loro origini e il ricordo del pianeta Terra sopravvive solo in alcune antiche leggende e favole per bambini.

Biomimicry, an inspiration for architects, designers and artists.

On 4th of May, we took an interesting lecture on Biomimicry and the possible inspiration for architects, designers and artists, in LdM Institute, Florence. Our welcome guest was Carlo Santulli, professor of "Materials, Science and Technology" at University of Camerino. He spokes about the importance to become more aware about natural processes and structures and how the use of this knowledge may be possible in art and design.

Here is a brief presentation of the lecture:

"If we read the first book of Janine Benyus, the founder of the Biomimicry science, we can easily understand how amazing the capacity of Nature is and how little we know about it. But with the new awareness of the last 20 years, we are becoming more sensitive and respectful towards our environment, because we are getting to know it better.

Watching carefully, we discovered that Nature runs its processes at room temperature, with normal pressure, using water like solvent and all this is done without producing any waste. We are very far to do something similar, still tied to the dear-old “heat, beat ant treat” method. When we want to produce something we introduce a lot of heat and pressure in the system and usually, produce toxic substances like by-product.

When we have a problem, it doesn't matter if it is a structural or biological one, for sure Nature has already solved it, because it has a very long experience: 3,8 billion of years of attemps and refinement in design and adaptation. Now we are starting to study and, in some cases, understand some natural processes and the lens of Biomimicry is helping us in this venture.

One of the most famous biomimetic invention was the airplane. The Wright brothers, inspired from the quiet flight of vultures, finally succeeded in their first historic flight in 1903. In 1914 we were dropping bombs from the sky. Nature has solutions, but we have a lot to learn."

Carlo Santulli is professor of "Materials, science and technology" in the School of Architecture and Design of the University of Camerino and a material scientist.

He has a strong interest in sustainable materials and biomimetics and among several publications and papers, he is the author of the book “Biomimetic, the lesson of the nature”, which is one of the few publication about this theme in Italy where, we have to say, Biomimicry is not really know.

A software house's office

(ENG) The Idea

The belief that the working spaces of a software company, which designs programs for the fashion world, has to distinguish itself from other types of offices (lawyers, engineers, etc.), was the leading idea of the whole project. So, how turn an anonymous space in a challenging and dynamic office, where he is “pleasant to stay”?

The Communication

For the budget allowed almost exclusively the purchase of furnishing, it was decided to make only the absolutely necessary masonry works and to focus on the functionality of the furniture, their distribution and the communication of the company's image. The result is a contemporary and international looking, where the "public areas" communicate a quiet informality, avoiding disorder.

The Mood

The reception, the inner distribution space and kitchen are characterized by the use of wallpaper with a colored stripes design, which gives an immediate sense of dynamism and comfort. As the colors are based on a standard system, is easy to create the same pattern through painting. In fact some office walls, the main inner space, and the relax room, were treated with the same logic, using one of the basic colors.

The Furnishings

The simplicity of the kitchen and the sitting area is expressed through the use of chairs with different colors and shapes but in agreement with each other, while a more rigorous approach was reserved for the offices with neutral colors like black, white and gray. Where possible, small areas with seating and low tables where play small meetings between colleagues or informal meetings, have been included . The furnishings have been carefully chosen to allow a high flexible composition and the ability to adapt to future changes.

The Services

The most important structural adjustment was the one regarding the bathroom. Positioned in the suggested place, it was designed according to current hygiene regulations, ensuring the easier use for disabled and customers, not forced to access in the spaces reserved to employees. It was also included an area to store food, tools and detergents for the kitchen, often overlooked but definitely essential.

(ITA) L'idea

La convinzione che gli spazi lavorativi di una software house, che progetta programmi per il mondo della moda, debba distinguersi da altre tipologie di uffici (avvocati, ingegneri, ecc.) è stata l'idea trainante di tutta la progettazione. Quindi, come trasformare uno spazio anonimo in un ufficio stimolante e dinamico, dove sia “bello stare?”

La comunicazione

Dato che il budget consentiva quasi esclusivamente l'acquisto dei mobili, si è scelto di operare solo gli interventi murari assolutamente necessari e concentrare l'attenzione sulla funzionalità degli arredi e della loro distribuzione e sulla comunicazione dell'immagine dell'azienda. Il risultato è un ambiente dall'aspetto contemporaneo e internazionale, dove le “aree pubbliche” comunicano una tranquilla informalità senza però risultare disordinate.

Il “mood”

La reception, lo spazio distributivo interno e la cucina sono caratterizzati dall’uso di una carta da parati con un particolare motivo decorativo a strisce colorate, in grado di dare un immediato senso di dinamicità e benessere. Dato che i colori si basano su un sistema standard, è possibile creare lo stesso decoro attraverso la tinteggiatura. Infatti alcune pareti degli uffici, dello spazio centrale e della sala relax, sono state trattate con la stessa logica, usando in maniera estesa una delle tinte base.

Gli arredi

La semplicità della cucina e della zona relax si esprime attraverso l'uso di arredi con forme e colori diversi ma in accordo tra loro, mentre un maggior rigore è stato riservato agli uffici dove predominano toni neutri quali il bianco, il nero e il grigio. Dove è stato possibile, sono state inserite delle piccole zone con sedute e tavoli bassi dove svolgere piccoli meeting tra colleghi o riunioni informali. Gli arredi sono stati scelti con cura per permettere una alta flessibilità compositiva e capacità di adeguarsi a futuri cambiamenti.

I servizi

L'intervento strutturale più importante è stato l'adeguamento del bagno. Posizionato nello spazio suggerito, è stato progettato secondo le attuali normative igieniche, garantendone l'uso ai disabili e un più facile utilizzo da parte dei clienti, non costretti ad accedere a spazi riservati agli impiegati. Inoltre è stata inserita una zona per conservare alimenti, attrezzi e detersivi per la cucina, spesso sottovalutata ma sicuramente indispensabile.

A sustainable renovation in France

The challenge of the project was the renovation of an old-farm-building located in Preaux, France, without upsetting its shape and characteristics. The goal was to create a comfortable and beautiful home to live and the right balance between public and private areas, through a careful study of the relation with the external spaces.

The two main project proposals are the greenhouse (Jardin d'Hiver) and the well of light (Tour Lumière). These two real “wellness” spaces which allow the light to dearly enter, are climatic systems that use a controlled “greenhouse effect” to heat the interior.

The greenhouse is placed in the same place of the old porch. This structure, once in poor conditions, becomes a place to enjoy the surroundings while drinking a tea, eating, reading, and even grown plants. A greenhouse is very suitable to recover plants as lemons, that particularly suffer from cold in winter. Near the greenhouse entrance is the Tour Lumière. Located in a side protrusion and cleaned from the old floors, becomes the true protagonist of the project.

On the south-west side of the house is the outdoor relaxation area. This is connected to the dining room through a large door which has the task to illuminate the interior, also. All the outside is dominated by a private swimming pool, installed without making any excavations. A retaining wall at the end of the property act as a barrier, holding the backfill in which is the swimming pool.

The pool ideally complete all the southern spaces which are dedicated to relaxation and light. The entire area then becomes a large place for leisure and flexible enough to allow different uses over the time.

A key part of the entire project is the structural aspect, with a few but significant actions such as the realization of new roofing, using steel, wood and glass, and the big opening of the Tour Lumière.

A significant effort has been to maintain almost all of the original openings to keep the sides without changing too much of the original appearance, but ensuring the necessary amount of light.

A decisive choice was taken in the creation of the new floor levels (made in steel and wood with a concrete finish) avoiding, as required by the Client, uncomfortable changes of plan.

Special attention was directed to the location of bathrooms, all located in the south-east, in order to concentrate the sewer hook-ups in one unique area.

Particular attention was given to the interior comfort through the insulation of the walls from the inside to leave the exposed stone outside. For this, insulation wood fibre panels finished with clay plaster were selected. They have characteristics soft and iridescent colours toward the exterior.

The external insulation was chosen on the side which hosts the large structure of the chimney, in order to leave the inner stone exposed. This outer wall is covered with lime plaster with natural paste-colored. An underfloor ventilation ensure the proper insulation from moisture coming from the soil. The greenhouse and the tower, are important regulators of the inner temperature, helping to gain sun's heat during the winter and providing the right ventilation in the summer.

Cos'è la Biomimetica? (What is Biomimicry?)

ITA. Posta in maniera estremamente semplificata, da quando l'Uomo ha deciso che il mondo doveva essere tirato a squadra, ha perso il contatto con l'ambiente circostante. Come architetto e designer, avverto sempre più urgentemente la necessità di riavvicinarsi alla Natura, alle sue regole compositive, alla sua armonia intrinseca votata al raggiungimento del massimo risultato con il minimo sforzo ed utilizzo di materiali.

Negli ultimi vent'anni si parla molto (all'estero più che in Italia) di Biomimesi (o Biomimetica, Biomimicry in Inglese). Ma in cosa consiste realmente questa filosofia? In parole povere, si tratta di prendere ispirazione dalle forme e dal funzionamento dei processi naturali.

Esistono molti livelli di “imitazione” della Natura. Il più semplice ed immediato è quello puramente formale, in tal caso un designer si ispirerà alla forma degli animali, delle piante, dei cristalli, ecc. Segue poi l'approccio “ingegneristico”, sono le strutture come i rami degli alberi, le ossa dei mammiferi, i rifugi degli animali ad ispirare i ricercatori, per poi arrivare alla biomimesi più profonda e difficile: l'imitazione dei processi biochimici.

ITA. Dai gusci di una castagna è nata l'ispirazione per l'ambientazione di un particolare paesaggio. Potrebbero avere questo aspetto i nostri spazi pubblici del futuro?

ENG. From the shells of a chestnut comes the inspiration for a particular landscape. May be this the look of our public spaces of the future?

Bisogna ricordare che i processi naturali avvengono, per la maggior parte a temperatura ambiente, con la normale pressione atmosferica e in acqua. Raramente nei nostri laboratori o industrie accade lo stesso. Man mano che guardiamo sempre più in profondità, scopriamo come siano resistenti e versatili le fibre di ragni e bruchi, come siano tenaci i collanti di alcuni mitili o efficienti le foglie di alcune piante.

La Natura ha un'esperienza continua di circa 3,8 miliardi di anni: gli organismi sono nati e si sono evoluti, alcuni hanno fallito, altri si sono perfezionati ed adattati all'ambiente. Questo è quello che noi esseri umani stiamo cercando di fare: capire come funziona la Natura.

L'ecosistema è la più grande biblioteca che abbiamo a disposizione: decine di migliaia di specie animali e vegetali che nascondono segreti che aspettano di essere compresi da noi. Qualsiasi sia la nostra domanda, la Natura ha già la risposta e, soprattutto, la soluzione. Questa è un'altra ragione per cui il nostro ambiente deve essere salvaguardato e protetto ad ogni costo: per ogni specie che si estingue, abbiamo una possibilità in meno di comprendere il mondo che ci circonda e di rispondere in maniera sostenibile alle nostre esigenze.

Straordinari uomini del passato hanno dedicato la loro vita all'osservazione e allo studio dei fenomeni naturali, basti pensare a Pitagora, Fibonacci, Leonardo (solo per citarne alcuni), contribuendo ad alzare il velo di ignoranza e superstizione che affliggeva (e affligge tutt'ora) l'Umanità.

Le forme naturali seguono delle regole matematiche precise. Senza addentrarsi troppo nello studio geometrico, osserviamo che una delle strutture maggiormente ricorrenti è la spirale logaritmica. E' possibile riconoscerla nei gusci di lumaca e delle conchiglie, ma anche nel moto delle acque o nella struttura stessa delle galassie, compresa la Via Lattea. Se si osserva con attenzione, si può trovare questa spirale sotto diverse forme, a volte davvero inaspettate.

La scienza della Biomimetica non può prescindere dalla conoscenza del modo organizzativo delle strutture. La ricerca della bellezza perfetta, della massima armonia da parte degli architetti del passato, ha condotto all'uso della (ri)scoperta di Pitagora della sezione aurea. Com'è ben noto, molti edifici dell'antichità (ma anche contemporanei) utilizzano i rapporti numerici del rettangolo aureo.

Da questa antica osservazione, nasce un rapporto che si traduce in un numero che rappresenta la perfezione, ovvero il numero Phi (equivalente a 1,618). Grazie agli studi di Leonardo Fibonacci (1175-1235) sono state scoperte le numerose proprietà della famosa serie numerica che prende il suo nome, nella quale ogni numero è la somma dei due numeri precedenti. A prima vista potrebbe non sembrare, ma questa regola è presente un pò dappertutto, in natura. Esiste un interessante e famoso video che illustra in maniera perfetta questo fenomeno, potete trovarlo qui.

Semplicemente osservandovi in giro, potrete scoprire dappertutto questi rapporti geometrici: un esempio è la disposizione dei petali e delle spine di una rosa. Se guardate bene, vi accorgerete che seguono l'andamento della spirale logaritmica.

ITA. La spirale Logaritmica è visibile nelle piante sia a "livello formale", sia ad un livello più profondo, per esempio le fasi di accrescimento delle foglie e dei rami seguono l'andamento numerico della serie di Fibonacci.

ENG. The logarithmic spiral is visible in plants in the "formal level", but at a deeper level, we can discover that the phases of growth of leaves and branches follow the Fibonacci series.

L'osservazione della Natura è solo il primo passo per una comprensione più profonda del mondo che ci circonda, i passi successivi consistono nello studio e nell'informazione costante delle scoperte che giorno per giorno, scienziati e studiosi fanno durante le loro ricerche.

La Natura ci parla con una lingua amorevole ma difficile, per comprenderla è necessaria dedizione, passione e attenzione.

ENG. Simply placed, since the Man has decided that the world had to be drawn with the ruler, he has lost his relationship with his environment. As an architect and designer, I feel more and more urgent the need to get closer to Nature, to its rules of composition, its inherent harmony rated to achieve maximum results with minimum effort and use of materials.

In the last twenty years we've talked a lot (more abroad than in Italy) of Biomimicry. But what really is this philosophy? In a very simply way, it's about taking inspiration from the shapes and natural processes.

There are many levels of "imitation" of Nature. The simplest and most immediate is purely formal, in which case a designer is inspired by the shape of animals, plants, crystals, etc.; then follows the

"engineering" approach, from structures such as tree branches, bones of mammals, animal shelters, and the last is when go deeper into biomimicry becomes very difficult: the imitation of biochemical processes.

It is necessary to remember that natural processes take place, for the most, at ambient temperature, with the normal atmospheric pressure and with water as solvent. Rarely in our laboratories or industries happens the same. As we look deeper and deeper, we discover how they are durable and versatile spiders and caterpillars' fibres, as tenacious are the adhesives of some mussels or efficient the leaves of some plants.

Nature has a continuous experience of some 3.8 billion years. The organisms were born and evolved, some have failed, others have been refined and adapted to the environment. This is what we humans are trying to do: to understand how Nature really works.

The ecosystem is the largest library that we have; tens of thousands of plant and animal species hide secrets waiting to be understood. Whatever our question, Nature has already the answer and, the solution. This is another reason why our environment must be safeguarded and protected at any costs: for each species going extinct, we have less chances to understand the world around us and respond in a sustainable way to our needs.

Extraordinary men of the past have dedicated their lives at the study and observation of natural phenomena, just think of Pythagoras, Fibonacci, Leonardo da Vinci (to name a few), helping to lift the veil of ignorance and superstition that afflicted (and afflicts nowadays too) Humanity.

Natural forms follow precise mathematical rules. Without going too much into the geometric, we can observe that one of the most recurrent structures is the logarithmic spiral. You can recognize it in snail and seashells, but also in the water motion or in the structure of galaxies, including the Milky Way. If you look closely, you can find this spiral in various forms, sometimes very unexpected.

The science of Biomimicry can't ignore the knowledge of how natural structures are organized. The pursuit of perfect beauty, the maximum harmony by the architects of the past, has led to the use of the (re)discovery from Pythagoras, of the golden section. As is well known, many ancient buildings (but also contemporary ones) using the numerical rules of the golden rectangle.

From this ancient observations, result a number that represents perfection, which is the number Phi (equivalent to 1.618). Thanks to the studies of Leonardo Fibonacci (1175-1235) were discovered the many properties of the famous numerical series that his named after him, in which each number is the sum of the two previous. At first glance it might not seem, but this rule is present almost everywhere in Nature. There is an interesting and famous video that illustrates perfectly this phenomenon, you can find it here.

Simply watching around, you can find almost everywhere these geometric relationships: an example is the arrangement of the petals and thorns of a rose. If you look closely, you will find that follow the trend of the logarithmic spiral.

The observation of Nature is only the first step to a deeper understanding of the world around us, the next steps are the study the willing to be up to date about constant discoveries that day after day, scientists make with their research.

Nature speaks to us with in a loving but difficult language. Understand it requires dedication, passion and attention.

Riporto un interessante articolo di Arredativo.it nel quale si parla di un argomento molto di moda in questo periodo, il design autoprodotto.

Per chi fosse interessato, di seguito ecco il testo in versione integrale del mio intervento:

Design autoprodotto, argomento spinoso... di solito si parte con il massimo dell'entusiasmo per poi scoprire che i costi di realizzazione del proprio oggetto sono fuori portata. Inizia così la ricerca dell'artigiano giusto, del materiale più abbordabile, della tecnica più sostenibile, arrivando, il più delle volte, ad una soluzione di compromesso.

Si tratta, in questi casi, di design autofinanziato più che autoprodotto. L'autoproduzione per essere realmente tale, deve essere appunto, auto-prodotta ovvero l'oggetto in questione deve essere pensato, progettato e realizzato dal designer. In questo modo è possibile eliminare parecchi intermediari nel processo, arrivando ad un prodotto unico, pronto per essere distribuito. Ah, già! Ora bisogna venderlo...

Insomma, il percorso può essere lungo e frustrante, specie per gli oggetti più complessi. Riuscire nell'impresa richiede determinazione, capacità organizzative e comunicative spalancando, però, le porte a tutto ciò che un'azienda affermata non potrebbe mai dare. Il design autoprodotto esula dalle mode e dalle ricerche di mercato, quello che nasce è senza filtri e, a volte, senza pudore.

The "labyrinth" effect was particularly felt by customers and was very tiring for employees and workers who were forced to travel through narrow maze and constantly dodging various objects placed on the path.

From a fragmented space in which there were several laboratories of cutting, sewing and packaging of the leather, it has been obtained new environments with precise functions, some of which are interconnected both physically and visually.

After the restoration, the reception establishes a direct relationship with the waiting and “dining” area. This helps to increase the security and control of entrance and exit of people and to eliminate the general sense of disorder.

The main “distribution axis” is an inner road that connects all spaces to each other, but it isn't a simple corridor but an exhibition road, a small museum where the company is exhibiting its leader clothes, a showcase that customers and visitors can see every day.

This environment has been modeled on the streets of the villages scattered in the Florentine Chianti (area where the company is based) that are never straight but offer glimpses and continuous changes of perspective. Each step conceals a discovery, a new angle, a projection, a recess, an entrance.

(ITA) "Il progetto di ristrutturazione degli spazi pubblici di questo stabilimento produttivo, nasce dall'esigenza di regolarizzare e razionalizzare i percorsi interni, caratterizzati da una estrema confusione planimetrica ed altimetrica. L'effetto “labirinto” era particolarmente avvertito dalla clientela e sicuramente stancante per gli impiegati e gli operai costretti a percorrere stretti dedali scansando continuamente vari oggetti posti sul percorso.

Da uno spazio frammentato in cui erano presenti diversi laboratori di taglio, cucito e confezionamento delle pelli, sono stati ricavati alcuni ambienti con funzioni precise, alcuni dei quali interconnessi sia fisicamente che visivamente.

L'asse distributivo è una strada che collega tutti gli ambienti tra di loro, ma non è un semplice corridoio bensì un percorso espositivo, un piccolo museo nel quale l'azienda espone i suoi capi più particolari, una vetrina sempre presente che clienti e visitatori possono ammirare ogni giorno.

Questo ambiente è stato realizzato sul modello delle strade dei paesi disseminati nel Chianti fiorentino (zona nella quale l'azienda ha sede) che non sono mai rettilinee ma offrono scorci e cambi di prospettiva continui. Ogni passo cela una scoperta, un nuovo angolo, uno sporto, una rientranza, un ingresso."

(ITA) Ogni storia d’amore ha i suoi protagonisti e i suoi complici: Romeo and Juliet, sono accompagnati nelle loro vicende da Mercutio e dalla Nutrice, personaggi le cui relazioni si intrecciano e si fondono. (English) - The project's name is Hydra. It is inspired by the phenomena of mutation and growth of natural organisms. An important element was the water and the shape of the vase that reminds a volcano, tying fire and water together. Other sources of inspiration are the radial symmetry organisms such as anemones and starfish. Finally we have the principle of communicating vessels: the water put in the central hole is up to the side pipes.

Il progetto da me presentato si chiama Hydra e si ispira ai fenomeni di mutazione e accrescimento degli organismi presenti in natura. Un elemento ispiratore è stata l'acqua, mentre la forma del vaso ricorda un vulcano, legando fuoco e acqua. Altri elementi ispiratori sono gli organismi a simmetria radiale come anemoni e stelle marine. Infine abbiamo il principio dei vasi comunicanti grazie al quale l'acqua messa nel foro centrale arriva fino ai tubi laterali.

Hydra has been selected to participate in FDD-Fuori Di Design 2014 edition, in the prestigious Design Library. This year's event theme is "CHANGE", organized by Materioteca /Milan Design Library / IMAKE

In nature everything moves, everything changes constantly. Organisms born, grow and die endlessly, soil and rocks change shape and position, water is in constant motion. Hydra is based on biological and mineral shape-shifting phenomena, remembering a marine organism, such as a coral or an anemone, or an erupting volcano. In its cavity water takes shape, arriving up to the side tubes, for the principle of communicating vessels.

Hydra è stato selezionato per partecipare all'edizione 2014 dell'evento FDD-Fuori Di Design, all'interno della prestigiosa location Design Library. L'evento di quest'anno, con il tema "CHANGE", è stato organizzato da Materioteca/Design Library Milano/IMAKE.

In natura tutto si muove, tutto è in continua trasformazione. Gli organismi nascono, crescono e muoiono incessantemente, la terra e le rocce mutano forma e posizione, l'acqua è in perenne movimento. Hydra si ispira ai fenomeni di mutazione di forma e crescita biologica e minerale ricordando sia un organismo marino, come un corallo o un anemone, sia un vulcano in eruzione. Nella sua cavità prende forma l'acqua che, grazie al principio dei vasi comunicanti, arriva fin nei tubi laterali.

Hydra è in ceramica tornita a mano ed è disponibile su ordinazione.

40 years of Ldm. 1973-2013

Forty years of teaching builds up a tremendous amount of experience, memories and feelings.

The people, with their faces, voices and characters, leave a trace of their passage in theacher's and school memory. The events follow one another in years, through the fashions and trends, some will forgotten, others remain, indelible.

And this was the main theme in the design of "Lorenzo de 'Medici" exhibit: to make clear as all the memories and experiences are fixating to our "spider web" mnemonic.

As happens in a spider's web, the projects and images of the past are fixed in time and space offering to the visitor the experience to observe the delicate weaving of the memory of the "Lorenzo de 'Medici."

In quaranta anni di insegnamento si accumula una enorme quantità di esperienza, ricordi, sentimenti.

Le persone, con i loro volti, le loro voci, il loro carattere lasciano una traccia del loro passaggio nella memoria degli insegnanti e dell'istituto. Gli avvenimenti si susseguono negli anni, attraverso le mode e le tendenze, alcuni verranno dimenticati, altri resteranno, incancellabili.

E' stato questo il filo conduttore nella progettazione dell'allestimento per la "Lorenzo dè Medici": rendere evidente come i ricordi e le esperienze si legano nella mente fissandosi alla nostra "ragnatela" mnemonica.

Così come accade nella tela di un ragno i progetti e le immagini del passato si fissano nel tempo e nello spazio offrendo al visitatore l'esperienza di osservare il delicato intreccio della memoria della "Lorenzo dè Medici".

Intrew cames from the words Internet, Relax and Work.

Its name reflects the many functions that this compact piece of furniture can play: connect to Internet, desk, mini-office.

Intrew furnishes the corner with an element operating and functional, leaving the full perception of the room to those who use it, being directed towards the center.

Designed in solid fir, can also be made in plywood laminated with various colors and finishes, both matt and gloss.

Despite being really compact (109x107x75 cm), Intrew has a small library and a compartment for storing chancellery, netbook or tablet, turning from a workstation in a recreational area, where you can listen to music or playing videogames using audio speakers collocated the right of the seat.

Seat access is facilitated by a folding shelf that can rotate 180 degrees, the overhang of the main desk is supported by a light element in polished stainless steel.

The seat and backrest are upholstered with polyester or simil; the support of the chair is steady.

The elements that make up the furniture are of small size and high, at most 73 cm, the desk could be divided into two pieces, as well as the back of the seat. There are three internal shelves and two or three vertical planes which are dividers and structural.

Intrew could be extended very easily with a triangular library placed on the left and, or on the back of the seat, supplemented by a further bridge cabinet with the bright bottom which will illumnated the desk, creating a real small operating core.

Intrew nasce dall'unione delle parole Internet, Relax e Work.

Il suo nome rispecchia le molteplici funzioni che, questo compatto elemento d'arredo può svolgere: postazione per connettersi, scrittoio, mini-ufficio.

Intrew arreda l'angolo con un elemento operativo e funzionale, lasciando la completa percezione della stanza a chi lo utilizza, essendo rivolto verso il centro della stessa.

Pensato in legno massello d'abete, può essere realizzato anche in multistrato laminato con colori o finiture varie, sia lucide che opache.

Pur essendo davvero contenuto (109x107x75 cm), Intrew dispone di una piccola libreria e un vano per riporre la cancelleria, il netbook o il tablet, trasformandosi da postazione di lavoro in zona ludica, dove ascoltare musica o giocare con i videogames utilizzando le casse audio nel vano ricavato a destra della seduta.

L'accesso a quest'ultima è agevolata dal piano a ribalta che può ruotare di 180°; lo sbalzo del piano principale viene sostenuto da un leggero elemento in acciaio inox lucido.

La seduta e lo schienale sono imbottiti con poliestere o simili; il supporto della sedia è fisso.

Gli elementi che compongono il mobile sono di piccole dimensioni e alti, al massimo 73 cm; il piano potrebbe essere diviso in due pezzi, così come il retro della seduta; sono presenti tre mensole interne e due/tre piani verticali divisori/strutturali.

Intrew potrebbe essere ampliato molto facilmente con una libreria a pianta triangolare posta sulla sinistra e/o sul retro della seduta, integrata da un ulteriore mobile contenitore a ponte con il fondo luminoso che svolge la funzione di lampada della postazione, creando un vero e proprio piccolo nucleo operativo.
