Open Source have reached the level that it is considered a vital component of daily Information Technology activity. It is not somebody’s hobby project or simple solutions to solve one’s personal problem anymore. Open Source is now a multi-million Ringgit industry where its customer demands the best from the provider.

Open Source in Enterprise environment is now on par, and sometimes exceed the quality and services offered by the proprietary company. In fact, some proprietary companies have bought or integrate other Open Source company or solution into their own product to enhance their product offering.

In line with that fact, and as a continuation from the previous year’s theme of “Open To Change”, “Making The Change”, and “Innovating The Change”, this year’s theme for Malaysia Open Source Conference 2012 is “Enterprising Open Source”. The theme invites the participant to share and explore the Open Source solutions and technology that are used in Enterprise environment.

This year, we are back to Klang Valley as most of our target participants are here. About 500 Open Source developers, system administrators, entrepreneurs, CIOs, CTOs, expert users, strategists and enthusiasts from all over the world are expected to join the 4th installment of Malaysia Open Source Conference which will be held on 8th to 10th July 2012.

With the theme "Enterprising Open Source", MOSC 2012 is set to explore the Open Source technology at the Enterprise level, and to promote the development of local Open Source solution for Enterprise environment to be use worldwide.

Call for speakers is open to all individual, organization, universities, companies and government agencies who is to present on the case study, development, implementation or applications. The working paper must be in knowledge sharing concept. The working paper must not contain marketing materials to promote certain product or company.

Please do note that the closing date for CFP is on April 30, 2012 and the selected paper will be informed after selection process is completed by the committee. For selected speakers you have to submit your presentation slide before June 15, 2012.

He will also cover the changes in Firefox development, including the new rapid-release schedule where Mozilla will release a new version of Firefox every 3 months.Gen will close with a discussion about the state of Mozilla in Malaysia and would like feedback from the audience regarding whether there is a need for a Malay-language Firefox.

MariaDB: The New M in LAMP

MariaDB is a branch of the popular MySQL database. The project began in 2009 circled around a storage engine, but quickly evolved to being another database, with two major releases in 2010. This session aims to introduce the project, and will help and DBA or developer get to grips with MariaDB. MariaDB is community developed, feature enhanced and backward compatible with MySQL.

MariaDB started life as a database to host the Maria (now renamed Aria) storage engine in 2009. Not long after its inception, the MySQL community went through yet another change in ownership, and it was deemed that MariaDB will be a complete database branch developed to extend MySQL, but with constant merging of upstream changes.

The goal of the MariaDB project is to ensure that everyone is part of the community, including employees of the major steering companies. MariaDB also features enhanced features, some of which are common with the Percona Performance Server. Most importantly, MariaDB is a drop-in replacement and is completely backward compatible with MySQL. In 2010, MariaDB released 5.1 in February, and 5.2 in November - two major releases in a span of one calendar year is a feat that was achieved!

Specific focus areas of the talk will include:

* why MariaDB executes queries faster -- all thanks to its improved optimiser

* the focus of different engines and why with MariaDB/MySQL, knowing which engine to pick, really makes a difference to your workload. MariaDB includes Aria, XtraDB, PBXT, FederatedX, OQGRAPH, SphinxSE and there are more to come

* new features like pool of threads support, table elimination, virtual columns, extended user statistics, segmented key cache

* why plugin's are utilised in MariaDB, and how to make use of pluggable authentication (PAM, LDAP, etc.) amongst other things

* why testing your database is important -- MariaDB has more coverage testing

* getting involved with the MariaDB project

* how features like

An overview of future features like Batched Key Access and GIS functionality will also be covered briefly.

DBAs and developers alike will gain an introduction to MariaDB, what is different with MySQL, how to make use of the feature enhancements, and more.

Speaker : Colin Charles

Colin Charles hacks on MariaDB, a MySQL fork at Monty Program Ab and advises Open Ocean Investments companies such as Web of Trust and MoSync. He lives in Kuala Lumpur. Before MySQL, he worked actively on the Fedora and OpenOffice.org projects. He’s spoken at many conferences – linux.conf.au, The MySQL Conference & Expo, foss.in, to name a few. He is currently a council member at the Malaysian National Computer Confederation (MNCC) and Technopreneurs Association of Malaysia (TeAM). He is Director at Grok Sdn Bhd.

Devtar Singh is the Associate Market Analyst in the Software team based in Malaysia. In this role, Devtar focuses on infrastructure management, information management analytics and security software research in Southeast Asia. He heads the Technology Investment Research practice for Southeast Asia where he works with venture capital firms and investment banks on technology investment strategies. He also authors reports and participates in regional consulting projects.

Prior to joining IDC, Devtar worked for Accenture as the Technology Analyst focusing in the oil/gas and fund management industries. Here he was involved on M&A and sequence engineering projects. During his tenure with Accenture, Devtar obtained his ITIL IT Service Management and Oracle Order and Service Management certification.

Devtar graduated from Multimedia University, Malaysia with a Bachelors of Information Technology majoring in Security Technology. Throughout his bachelors, he was a Microsoft Student Partner for Multimedia University, Malaysia. Devtar was a mentor for Google’s Open Source Programs Office through the Summer of Code program.

Improving Application Security Assurance with OWASP ASVS - MOSC2011

The primary aim of the OWASP Application Security Verification Standard (ASVS) Project is to normalize the range in the coverage and level of rigour available in the market when it comes to performing Web application security verification using a commercially-workable open standard. The standard provides a basis for testing application technical security controls, as well as any technical security controls in the environment, that are relied on to protect against vulnerabilities such as Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) and SQL injection. This standard can be used to establish a level of confidence in the security of Web applications.

During the presentation, Cecil will show how the ToV (Target of Verification) can be applied in real life cases.

Cecil is the Director for Grant Thornton Technology Advisory Pte Ltd, a member firm of Foo Kon Tan Grant Thornton LLP, one of the largest auditing firms outside the Big4. As head of the Technology Advisory unit, he leads various engagement teams on diversified projects across vertical industries. His area of focus is in IT Assurance, IT Security Advisory and Digital Forensics.

Cecil had diverse opportunities outside of work offering his time for various IT Security initiatives. Aside from being a committee member of the OWASP Global Education Committee, he has also contributed to the widely-used OWASP Testing Guide, and coordinated efforts for the internationalization of Asian languages of OWASP materials. Cecil is also the current Chapter Lead for the Singapore Honeynet Project, an ExCo member for the Association of Information Security Professionals (AISP) for 2009/2010/2011, and a founding member of the Singapore Cloud Forum.

He holds a Bachelor of Science (Hons) in Computing Information Systems from Goldsmiths College, University of London. Besides being a practicing ISO/IEC 27001:2005 Lead Auditor, he also holds certifications from CISSP, CISA, CISM, CRISC, OPST, OCP DBA, PCI QSA and CNE.

A professional manager in technology management, assessment, customer care and international marketing, With over 14 years of total working experience with more than 5 years of solid experience in managing technology & investment process including strategy, technology evaluation, portfolio monitoring, and technology mapping.

After serving multinationals Intel Corp and Oracle Corp, he joined Multimedia Development Corp in 1998, where he held various management positions, including served as Special Officer (ICT,Biotech) to then to the Minister of Science, Technology & Innovation in 2004-06. How Linux Has Evolved: A Retrospective On The Past 10 Years - MOSC2011

Ever since Linux burst onto the open source scene as 'the new kid on the block' back in the 90s, it has quickly grown into one of the most widely-used operating systems in the world. This talk is a retrospective on the growth of Linux from a hobbyist toy to an enterprise-class operating system, the issues the Linux community has faced, technical and legal. We'll cover the development of the Linux kernel, the various distros and desktops, issues with hardware and software vendors. We also take a look at the state of Linux today, how it's changed since the beginning and yet remain the same.

birgHPC: Creating Instant Computing Clusters for Bioinformatics and Molecular Dynamics - MOSC2011

birgHPC, a bootable Linux Live CD has been developed to create high-performance clusters for bioinformatics and molecular dynamics studies using any Local Area Network (LAN)-networked computers. birgHPC features automated hardware and slots detection as well as provides a simple job submission interface. The latest versions of GROMACS, NAMD, mpiBLAST and ClustalW-MPI can be run in parallel by simply booting the birgHPC CD or flash drive from the head node, which immediately positions the rest of the PCs on the network as computing nodes. Thus, a temporary, affordable, scalable and high-performance computing environment can be built by non-computing-based researchers using low-cost commodity hardware. Implementing an Open Source Infrastructure in SME - MOSC2011

Cost of IT has been in many cases made IT out of reach of most SME. However, it is possible to leverage various enterprise class software and put them into use in SME. This can range from something very simple like office suite to ERP and Business Intelligence software.

In this presentation, participants will hear from experience of the speakers in implementing various open source infrastructure into the company. The speaker had moved from a proprietary environment into a 90% open source withint he organization. Over 90% of the desktops within the speaker's organization has been switched to Linux and has been so for the last 8 years. Speaker will share various caveats, tricks and methodology when adopt an open source strategy.
