Messenger Plus! 4.82 Released

Alsmost three months after the previous release, a new version of Messenger Plus! is available. This version (4.82.368) will probably be one of the last of the 4th generation of Messenger Plus! as work on version 5 will begin during summer.

MSN Webmessenger closing

Microsoft has decided to end the MSN Webmessenger. The service will end on the 30th of June 2009 (just 1 day to go ).

From now on you are forced to chat via a web-based Messenger by signing in to Hotmail. Check this toturial.

Note, this webmessenger only works in Internet Explorer and Firefox. It doesnt work for google chrome users, they should use one of the alternatives below.

Stopping Windows Live Messenger spammers

How-to geek wrote a great post on how to stop Windows Live Messenger (WLM) spammers.

The first time you receive a spammer message like this, you will be prompted with an option to block messages from unknown senders, which is exactly what you want to do. The problem is that if you don�€™t choose this option the first time, you won�€™t get the same option again.

Normally if you choose block, you�€™ll be notified that this blocks everybody who is not on your allow list. As far as I�€™m concerned, that�€™s just the way I like it.

If you�€™ve mistakenly or purposely chosen to allow on the earlier screen, you can still block all unknown users�€”you�€™ll just need to take a trip to the Options panel.

Here you�€™ll want to check the box for �€œOnly people on my Allow List can see my status and send me messages�€�. Then you can setup your Allow list if you want, or block other people.

MessengerDiscovery 2 Released!

After a couple of Beta versions (0959, 0018, 0037) and lots of development by Matt (from MessengerDiscovery) there now is a final version of MessengerDiscovery 2.

MessengerDiscovery 2 is a complete rewrite from the previous version, using Microsoft .Net technology it should be more stable and more flexible.

Minimize problem Windows 7 beta

If you are working on the beta build of Windows 7 you should have noticed that you couldnt minimize Windows Live Messenger 9 to the Notification Area. Instead it minimizes to the taskbar.

To fix this issue follow the steps:

1) First exit Windows Live Messenger.
2) Goto the Windows Live Messenger shortcut and right click on it.
3) A new window will appear, select the Compatibilty tab.
4) Check the Run this program in compatibility mode option and change it to Vista. And press OK. (See screenshot).
5) Now run Windows Live Messenger again, and try minimizing.

Downgrade to Windows Live Messenger 8.5 how-to

Lots of people are complaining about the latest Windows Live Messenger 9. They are all looking for a way to downgrade to Windows Live Messenger 8.5.

To help those people with this downgrade a wrote a little how-to.

1. First uninstall everything

The first step is to totally remove every program that is related to Windows Live Messenger. You can use ZapMessenger, ZapMessenger will try to remove all your MSN/WLM messenger versions.

Also check your Control Panel -> Programs and remove everything related to Windows Live Messenger.

2. Download and install Windows Live Messenger 8.5

Once you run the first step completely you can start downloading and installing Windows Live Messenger 8.5 again. The download to the correct file can be found on the page (look for the download now).

A file called WLinstaller.exe will download, run it.

Select the Messenger product, once selected it will start installing (this can take a couple of minutes to start).

If you get a error wenn you run WLinstaller.exe, see extra step below.

Enjoy Windows Live Messenger 8.5 again!

Extra step: Windows Installer Clean Up

Download this program (this will install under C:\Program Files\Windows Installer Clean Up) and run msicuu.exe in the installation folder. Look for everything related to Windows Live (like Windows Live Messenger etc..).

Select the program(s) you want to remove and press remove.

Hope this helps to fix the WLinstaller.exe error.

New version Messenger Plus! 4.81

A small update has arrived for Messenger Plus!. This new version is 4.81.358, no big changes just some bug fixes.

Some changes

pressing Ctrl+A in a multi-line edit box doesn't have any effect.
some preferences windows and skin option panels may not be properly scrolled with the middle button of some mouses.

Windows Live Messenger Version 2009 just got updated to build 14.0.8064.0206. If you are still running a older build Windows Live Messenger (also 8.1 or 8.5) you will get a prompt (see below) encouraging you to upgrade to this latest version .

If you agree with this upgrade it will try to automaticly update to the latest version.

You can also upgrade your self, just download Windows Live Messenger 2009 essentials.

MessengerDiscovery 2.Net public beta

After months of development by Matt, the first public beta of MessengerDiscovery .Net is available.

The main new update is that MessengerDiscovery has been totally rebuild with .Net, so it should be more stable (and less buggy?) then the previous versions.

Messenger 9 Beta problems

It seems like Windows Live Messenger 9 beta is having some problems, The Inside Windows Live Messenger group provides a solution for the following two problems.

Notice: Sign-in problems for beta users that block a group

An issue has been discovered in the current Windows Live Messenger beta that may leave users unable to sign-in. Only a very small number of users may encounter this issue but wanted to proactively message this to the community.

To avoid the issue yourself, please DO NOT block a group and then leave the group. If you plan to leave a group, please unblock it first. Following this precaution will ensure that you will not be affected by this issue.

We are currently working hard to fix the problem and allow those customers who have been affected to once again sign-in to the Messenger beta.

Thank you for your time and for participating in the beta! We will post more information about this issue when it becomes available.

Error 810003c1 while signing into Messenger

Some beta users seem to be getting an error 810003c1 when they try to login to Messenger. This error can be caused if the region setting for your account is not set. If you are seeing this error, please go to https://account.live.com/EditProf.aspx and make sure the Country/Region field is set correctly to your own country.
