Inaugural I Heart Gallery DIY Markets

I sell my art and craft at a little store in Newtown called I Heart Gallery. It's right next to St Peters station, across from Sydney Park Brickworks. And once a month they're starting to put on FREE DIY Markets!

Here are some photos from the very first one. There was a sausage sizzle, buskers, a band, and a bunch of insanely awesome stallholders! Such lovely, unique wares. My faves are the tiny terrariums and the fascinators. Oh and the moustaches!!!

The markets are just starting up and they need your support. If you'd like to run a stall, busk, do live painting on the I Heart Gallery back wall, or anything else, go tell them on facebook!

Add I Heart Gallery on facebook, twitter, tumblr, and if you'd like to stock your art & craft there like me, download application forms on their website! They are SO FREAKIN' CHEAP. Seriously. $10 a week can you believe that! That's 7 times cheaper than a market stall, for 1000 times the exposure! Well ok maybe not 1000...I hate maths ok? Deal with it. Regardless. That's a solid three months worth of store time for $120 instead of two measly days at a normal markets for the same price. CUH. RAZY.

So the next DIY Markets is gonna be on the 13th August. BE THERE OR BE A DOUCHE!

Spirograph!!!

Yesterday I bought a Spirograph!!! Vinnies is always full of such wonderful surprises. To date some of the best things I've gotten from that particular store are: MIB roller skates, MIB chocolate fondue set, MIB-ish spin art machine, and now this wonderful thing! I've always wanted one, and finally fulfilled my childhood desire.

It doesn't work THAT well...none of the plastic parts lock in place so you have to make sure you hold the circle in place really hard or your design gets messed up. But it does the job and look at those purty spirographs! Now to figure out what kind of artworks I can do with it...

It's funny how everything is coming up spirals lately...what do you think it means?

Spin Art Machine

The other day I found an old Spin Art machine at Vinnies for $5! I was so excited, I've never tried it before. Funnily enough I'd been thinking about spins and spirals lately...last week I took my first proper star trail photo and the day JUST before I found it, I'd been thinking of trying Spin Art! Serendipitous. Synchronous.

When I first turned it on it didn't work...one of the battery terminals had that green corroded/corrosive stuff on it. So I scraped it off and voila! Lo and behold, a spinny, spinny marvel!

Here are my first trials with the Spin Art machine. First I used the neon paints that came in the box, then I used drawing inks, then I used faux Sharpies (Markline textas). I took some videos of the machine in action too.

These are all unfinished and untitled. I'm playing with a few ideas on how to turn them into less abstract pieces.

Star Trails

Last week I took my first ever proper star trail photo. Very proud! It was a cold, dark night with an incredibly large orange moon and huge roaring waves. I took many long exposures though, so the crashing waves became foggy spectres. I'd love to take more star trails and try for the entire spiral...maybe in summer! :P

I can never seem to take a photo with both the scenery and the moon in the same shot, but here are some of my attempts that night. I suppose it would help if I took a scientific approach to photography but I don't really enjoy doing that, I prefer the intuitive approach.

So I've started a new series as part of my ongoing visual exploration of erotica and the body in contemporary culture.

It's nowhere near even started but I am too excited, I HAVE to post pictures!

I've never embroidered a thing in my life (ok maybe I cross stitched for 5mins as a kid), this is my first ever and I did it freehand, making it up as I go...and it is still turning out awesome! I'm so pleased :)

It's unfinished, untitled, embroidery floss on vintage handkerchief. Oh and it's a penis :P

Etsy Store Re-opened

More Digital Pinhole Experiments

This is what happened when I put the body cap on the front of a lens. So nope, that's not gonna work!

Above are with a fast shutter speed, below are with a slow shutter speed and turned out almost black - I had to adjust levels and contrast to bring out the images. I couldn't go too far though, they turned pixelly.

Digital Pinhole Cap Arrives!

YAY! My DSLR Pinhole Cap arrived today!!

When it arrived someone asked me: "Oh yeah...so why do you want that?" lol why is nobody else ever as excited as I am about photo gadgets?! My answer is simple and fourfold:

1. To broaden my photographic opportunities.
2. To broaden my skill set.
3. To play with because it's FUN!
4. It's AWESOME dammit!!

I did however, prevaricate about buying one for a while. After seeing some of the DSLR Pinhole galleries online it seemed like it really takes much more of an effort to get a GOOD shot with this. This pinhole isn't attached to the front of a lens, it's attached straight to the BODY of the camera. Therefore you cannot focus, you cannot zoom. You can't leave it on auto, for you lazy luddites ;) you have to use manual and choose and experiment with how long you leave the shutter open etc.

With FILM pinhole, I feel like it has a lot more...hmm I want to say depth? I feel like the images are much more mysterious, much sharper...and let's face it, it's just plain fun building the camera and developing your photos yourself. But all that said, I have definately seen some amazing DSLR pinhole shots online. So I know it can be done!

I'm going to practice so that when I finally do take an amazing pinhole shot I will be proud of my achievement. For now, here is some pinhole cap porn, and my cruddy first experiments that I only spent 2mins shooting and I'm all sick n stuff so don't judge me, you judgemental meanie! *pout*

For the camera geeks:

-Focal Length = 42mm

-Pinhole size = 0.25mm

-F/Stop = 168

Also, I'm going to have to put some glass or acetate over the pinhole to keep dust out, and see if that affects the images or not. As you can see, the hole is just left open as I bought the cheapest version available...I am a starving, reclusive, mysterious artist after all!

P.S. I LOVE packages that have the lil string thingy. I only ever get them from Asia!

My Artwork On A Book Cover

So today my pretty Italian book cover arrived. Those Europeans work fast, it feels like only a few weeks ago they asked if they could use it! "Russian Window" by Dragan Velicik.

I think the books are beautiful, I wish I could read them. Maybe I'll look out for an English language version. In this article the author sounds epic: “Of course, I am happy for this award. If it had been given to me 15 or 20 years ago, it would have meant much more to me than the other way around. Today, we are equal.”

Haha! You tell 'em, Velicik. Anyways, for the full series this artwork came from - "Clad/Unclad", 2004 scroll down. They are vintage erotic photographs from unknown photographers, printed on 100% silk satin, using the cyanotype process (I love alternative and vintage photographic processes!). They're mounted on padded board too for a really soft, sensuous feel.

Etsy On Hiatus

Greetings True Believers!

I've been excessively ill for about two months, so I've put my Etsy store on hiatus for a while. I'll still blog if and when the muse hits me, and you can still contact me by email or on facebook (m.sunflower@live.com and MSunflower Art on fb) if you really, REALLY want to order or publish something.

Also, for those of you who were wondering where a lot of my Porn Pins jewellery line went, Etsy removed many of them. Remember how the concept behind the series was to question the difference between pornography and art and whether it had a statute of limitations? Well turns out Etsy decided they fell on the pornography side lol. The funny thing is...they decided some of the items were porn and some weren't and left those up! Confused? I was!

Don't worry, they were very nice about it and I got the feeling the lady dealing with my case quite liked them but had to take them down anyway. So if you want Porn Jewels you have to buy direct from me now. You lucky thing! Valentines Day is coming up...I suppose I should keep my store up to try and make some money from that but I just don't have the energy right now. If enough people contact me wanting things I'll open it back up and try to find a postage slave.
