Internet was like a forest to me, at first. It had all that bling-bling blazing on my pretty little eyes that everytime I swish trhough a webpage, it was like Merlin's magic had come down upon the present and struck me right in the middle of my eyes. Dang, all that bla bla text and graphic arts had gotten me so mezmerized that at some point I'd totally forgotten my purpose for using the internet.

Well, so much for the introduction. What I tried to say was that I'm a complete newbie on the internet when I was still a caveman last year. Heck! I didn't know that you could use the internet to earn some money for yourself. But When I knew it, It was like "OH MY GOSH! I didn't know you could do that!" When I was a child there I was fascinated by the things people give away and take back when they meet up in a store. And when I was a bit older I discovered it was money - cold hard cash everyone's been dying to get a hold of every single days of their lives. The poor needs it. The middle class desires for it. And the Rich wastes it. All goes well and all.

But as I got older, just like you and everyone else's, I've got to face the fact that I too also need the money to use for myself.

High school life was pathetic. It sure did give me scars I don't exactly needed at most. And then there was college. Ahhh...college was the best years of my life. I always want to get back to college. Feel that fresh day when I always need to finish an assignment to pass for my instructor who never cares to scan it. But then again, after finishing nearly 8 semesters of grueling, ass kickin' nights and days in school, I was convinced that school was just a playground.

It meant nothing to the real world. It was a playground for most employees and a few employers. And I don't want to be an employee myself.

When I graduate, what will I do? Where will I go? How will I do it? Am I doing the right decision?

Recently, it got me thinkin' when I read just a couple of pages from the book Rich Dad Poor Dad. All right just a hundred pages. But for the most part what I got from his book was that it was simply how we think of ourselves - whether you're an employee or the employeer.

While most college graduates bounce around the country trying to find a good job that will take care of their financial need, employers think of this in a different way. They use this mind-setting of most of the working population to thier advantage.

Thinking that their monthly salary would keep them from being poor and useless, employees set their lives on a ratrace pitfall. They work for the rest of the month, wait for their monthly salary, spend their monthly salary for whatever purposes, and then work again for another month. What a rat race cycle!

Employers think differently. They work for the rest of the month, wait for their monthly salary, invest a part of their monthly salary on a business, work again for another month and then invest again. That's how the rich become rich - they invest their hard earned money on their day job on money making businesses.

But no! That's ain't possible for the employee. Most of the time, what they will think is that they want the money now, spend it now and work again, again and again.

But were the employers already employers from the start?

Of course not. Somewhere in the past they were too employees. They just know what to do with their money and how to find the right opportunity in their current situation. The owner of SM Mall was just a shoe maker in his younger days. He just used his hard earned SAVED monthly income to start his own COMPANY. That took him years to do it. But I'm sure, now that the internet age has come to view there are more opportunities now that 30 years ago. So there is no reason for anyone to say that he only needs to be an employee to be financially free. That's what I'd say.

Your're talking all of this - how about you? What have you done to become an employer so far?

How about me? Well, I've got some few ideas I'd done already. Although I'm still in the employee stage, I'm already doing stuff I think is gonna make me some grand bucks for the future. It's not much but hey, YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU WON'T TRY. I'd say.

Too bare-bones - Job-seekers who feel that "name, rank and serial number" or employer, job title, and dates of employment constitute a full-blown resume are wrong. And they never get called.

Irrelevant information - You cn do more harm than good with data like age, height, wieght, hobbies, even certain telling information about schools or organizations. Look at it this way: You're selling the professional aspect of your life... period. Employers don't want to know your golf handicap, and they have no right to other personal information. The rules have changed.

Unprofessional appearance - Poor typing, poor printing - even with the beset qualifications, you can't get past a sloppy presentation.

Misspellings, poor grammar, and other gaffes - I've met personnel people who immediately consign a resume to the reject stack just because of misspelled words. It may not be fair, but it's real life. You should read the finished resume twice, and then have an individual whose spelling and grammar you respect proof it. that disinterested eye usually catches hidden errors.

The Glitz effect - Fancy binders are a waste of money and don't fit in manila files. Photographs and unusual paper colors are a deterrent rather than a benefit. If in doubt, leave it out. Stick to the proven formats.

Misdirected to incorrect individuals - sometimes it's not the human relations department to whom you should be sending. It might be the department head.

Investing In The Marketplace: Just A Random Thought

Wouldn't it be great if you had a passive income you can count on? Yep. It certainly is. When there's an emergency and you need money to buy an extra cone of ice cream Sunday for your hungry girlfriend, you know where to turn to. That's your passive income. Not just one passive source of income but two, or even three. The question is HOW and WHERE do you start? I have a proposition in mind.

Just A Little Bit Of Intro Here

It all first came down on my noggin' when I was busily browsing over my head when suddenly a thought came into my view. You know what investments mean don't you? It's investments on how your money will move and work for you that will literally make you sit back and enjoy watching it grow like a banana stump growing at the back of your yard, just like mine.

I'm not talking about investments in trust funds, stocks, or real estates. Although these are very lucrative sources of passive income I won't tackle them in this post. They're broad and pretty much confusing in some way.

What I'm talking about is investment in other people's business. What makes it different from investing in the stocks is that you invest your money personally with someone else's business.

Just an example I made up so you'd know what I'm talking about.

Suppose I have a friend who is self-employed in the buy-sell business industry and I would also want to get into the business, What do I do? Invest in his business.

But how then would the transaction be? It's not loaning money for interests, it's about shares. Like the stocks. You invest money to buy a part of a company. In return you get paid everytime that company is generates income. That's how your plan will be. I'll invest in the businesses of others. In return, when they are earning, I'll just drop by them and ask for my share of the income. It could be daily or weekly depending on our agreement.

The Business Plan

As to the cost how much you and I will invest, well it depends - depends on how much you are willing to invest and how much willing is your business partner will take.

When It comes to breaking the income in equal shares you must know how to break even the pie so that your side will be happy and the other's side will also be happy. It's a win-win situation.

Since your investment is a part of the business then you are aloted to part of all the income generated of that business as well. Depending on how much in percentage the value of your money is invested to the business, so will be your percentage of the shared income of that business.

How It Works

If your investments were about 10,000 Php and the whole business' capital was 100,000 Php, then you are entitled 10% of the whole income generated by the business.

But thinking that it would be unprofitable for your friend (knowing that he'd give you all the 10% share of the income), wouldn't that be a little bit insensitive? I mean, he's the one who made the business work and your just standing there waiting for the money to arrive. Wouldn't that upset him? Sure it would.

That's why instead of taking the whole 10% share, why not give him at least 30% of your shares just for compensation of his service and his business.

In return, he'd be more happy that he got a profit from the business deal without him spending a dime for a bigger capital in his business. That's for sure.

You keep the 7% share and everybody's happy. Only 7%? Isn't that a bit small?

The answer is NO. the 3% that you gave as a service fee is just a small sacrifice for a long term passive income.

If the capital was 100,000 Php and the daily income would be 130,000 Php then you would have 2,100 Php on a daily basis. That would mean, in just 5 days you would have your investments returned in full and you still have your passive income generating money for you daily.

That's good news isnt' it?

A Glimpse Of An MT Student's Daily Life

Do you know what a medical transcription student's daily life is? Well, I'll tell you. It's pretty much the same as the other trainees in the BPO industry. You sit on an butt-hungry chair, set y'er eyes on the big ol'monitor, set your hands to overdrive on the keyboard 'coz there's no stoppin' you from banging that key over and over again until your ears hurt like listening to your mother's yelling.

But hey, you're still alive. As for me, the story's a bit different as everyone else's. Now that I've got your attention, I'd like you to know what a medical transcription student's daily routine is. I'm not a medical transcriptionist yet, but I'm starting to get the hang of this ass-burning job.

As you generally and probably would know, medical transcription is a job that literally transcribes medical reports overseas from audio to text formats. It's true for that part, but it's more than that. It's really more than just that.

If you would ask a medical transcription student, here's what I experienced.

6:01 in the morning - This time around, I'd be awake in my bed and thinking "Just one more 1 minute of sleep please." 'Coz my body is still stressed from yesterday. But then again, reality comes first dealt with. I'd get up, wash my body, wear another pair of clothes, eat, and then walk up a mountain just to get to work.

8:15 just right in time for school. But when teacher caught me, he'd ask, "why're you late?" and then I'd answer, "TRAFFIC kasi ser. hehe" sabay tawa... That's a relief. I got off the hook.

8:30 it's study time but why study if you already are taking up a finishing program for medical transcription? Owzz...? Yes. I'm a BS biology grad so it was an advantage for me. I got a know-how on physiology and anatomy so why waste time on relecturing me if I already know?

12:00 Lunch time! Who's hungry? Our teacher went inside the classroom just to tell me of the time. "It's 12:15 already." I know what he meant. I was overstaying, and I need to get out of class, stuff myself with rice-a-la-toppings, then get back to class at 01:00 for my appointment with my computer.

01:15 Our teacher's always late. Why is he always like that? Anyway...were back on track and I'm ready for my typing tutor. Let the games begin!!! Is 60 WPM fast? coz' I see someone else type fast like a zillion paragraphs per minute! Just joking....hehe...That ain't possible.

04:35 Ohhh...my eyes are getting tired. Even my hands are burning. I think I'm having a carpal tunnel syndrome. No. Just false alarm. Man it's cold in here. The air conditioner must be workin non-stop. My hands are freezing and I want to sleep already.

04:55 It's parting time. Bye-bye all you beautiful classmates to my left, right, front, and back. I'll miss you for today. I'll get back tomorrow. I signed off to my number one fan, the computer and off I go to home.

05:56 I can't believe it. I just traveled 7 kilometers for 1 HOUR. 1 stinking hour in the PUV. And thank God I didn't doze off before we passed our house otherwise I'd be hiking another 2 kilometers back to where my house resided.

06:30 Oh my achin' back - my achin' legs - my achin' but. I just wanna hug the bed and eat the T.V. set... Well, I gotta eat first. And some of that irresistable INTERNET on our PC. Hm-hm! Just the way I like it. Juicy Express. Who wants to blog? I do! I do! Read. read. read. comment. comment. comment. Equals LINKS!!!!

11:15 I'm already devasted. My face is a mess. I need to sleep anymore. No more blog posts. I can't think of anything else. Let's hit the sack everyone!!! Good night.

And that's what a medical transcription student's daily life is. Don't get me wrong but it's my experience. It might be different from yours but It sure is fun learning to be a medical transcriptionist.

If MT Was In Demand Then Why Isn't It Noticeable

3 months ago I started training for a medical transcription career. I was nervous. I didn't know what to do - where to go - or what to expect. But as I went along. I asked people around, and soon discovered a fact that not a lot of us noticed. It was so obvious but seemed invisible to the eyes of the many aspiring job seekers looking around for job vacancies. It was the HIGH demand for the job - and only few people noticed it.

Looking back 3 months ago, when I walked through the door to get some information about medical transcription, I was surprised. Only a few people were interested about the job. In fact, not everybody even knew what a medical transcription career was.

Sure everybody needs a job. It brings them food, gives them a sense of pride. If you were the manager of a company's department, you'd likely be proud of yourself . Their jobs keep them from being worthless. It initiates us to prove to ourselves that we are fit in the society.

To have a job is a social responsibility. And if you're job was a medical transcriptionist, then you'd be proud. Because you're one of the support system of those who needs medical attention. Their life depend on you and they're paying for it - A LOT. But not everybody knows this, that's why even though the job is highly in demand, not everybody notices because they don't know the what's in it for them - what benefits they'll get working as a medical transcriptionist.

The BPO industry has been dominating the country for many years now. It has been estimated that the Philippines has the potential to go way beyond 5% of the global BPO industry, taking over the position held by INDIA in the Asia-Pacific alone.

News has been spreading all over newspapers, the T.V., over the radio, and even thorugh verbal communication that there are jobs out there that needs to be filled by qualified job seekers.

But why do only a few see that the healthcare BPO industry is a key player in giving jobs to the jobless?

Because many of us think that the BPO industry only revolves around the customer care service industry, commonly known the "Call centers agent industry." We are so engrossed in the idea that to be in the BPO industry you have to be a call center agent.

According to Commissioner Monchito Ibrahim of ICTO:

"There are 95,000 of nursing graduates every year and only less than 50% passed the board exam. 15% of them are working in call centers."

Everybody is so worked-up in becoming call center agents! Nursing graduates, doctors, engineers, and even Filipino teachers go work to call centers.

They study in college only to land a job that's not their specialty. Don't get me wrong but it's the truth. Most nurses work not as a nurse but somewhere in the city as a call center agent.

Myla Rose Reyes, HIMOAP President says:

“The Philippines has an adequate and competent pool of medical workforce to maneuver this industry. The country’s capability in providing workers particularly in medical transcription alone is now getting a significant attention from the US market as they are currently undergoing a major healthcare reformation.”

"The local healthcare business process outsourcing sector is steadily going up the value chain, going beyond medical transcription, and is now ready to provide jobs to 86,000 nurses from now to end-2016."

AHDI Has A New Scoring System For Document Accuracy

AHDI has brought in its new scoring system as the "Error Value from 100 Method." It's basically a simple demerit system where an "error-free document" is given a pefect score of 100. The errors are scored by subtracting the sum of errors from 100.

This new method also uses 98 as the passing score but it ensures that any report containing at least one critical error, regardless of length will fail the quality review. This resolves a well-known flaw of the previous system where reorts with a critical error may have a passing score if the lines exceed 100 lines.

The New Accuracy Formula

Accuracy = 100 - sum of error deductions

Accuracy = 100 - (quantity of Critical Errors x 3 points + quantity of Non\Critical Errors x 1 point)

Length of the report is no longer a factor in the scoring system

Critical Error - 3 points
Non-Critical Error - 1 point
Feedback & Educational Opportunities - no deduction

Definition of Errors

Critical Errors: Errors that directly compromise patient safety. A critical error in any reort will fail that report.

Terminology Misuse

            - Wrong diagnosis
            - Incorrect medical decision-making
            - Inaccurate billing

Omissions/Insertions

- Omitted or added words that change content and compromise patient safety.

Incorrect Patient Demographics or Author Identification

- Patient-encounter information such as MRN, date of service, date of consultation or date of operation, and author identification number.

Non-Critical Errors: Errors that have an impact on overall accuracy and integrity of a document but do not pose a risk to patient safety.

Failure to Flag

Formatting /Account Specifications

Feedback & Educational Opportunities: Errors that do not change meaning or have no potential to affect patient care fall into this category. DOLE: High School Grads Should Consider Cyber Service Jobs

Job Opportunities In Healthcare Information Management In The Philippines

It's a fact that thousands of jobless newly graduated madlang people such as nurses, pharmacists, physical therapists, and graduates of other medical-related courses don't have jobs. But not anymore. Why? Because there is a growing job demand in the healthcare information management (HIM) due to business process outsourcing (BPO) coming from North America (the United States and Canada), Europe and Asia as well.

This was explained by BPO experts at the Healthcare Information Management Outsourcing Association of the Philippines Inc. (HIMOAP)

The rapid progress of the HIM industry such as medical transcription services decreased the mass migration of our medical force in the country as offshore outsourcing drove the Philippines' reputation in the BPO industry.

The healthcare outsourcing industry is about US $13 billion annually and that it is rapidly growing in the market globally.

As of the end of 2010, the BPO industry provided employment to an approximate 14,000 medical transcriptionists in North America, Great Britain and Asia-Pacific, which comprise 85% of the country's market.

The HIM industry aspires to provide our medical graduates more relevant job employment alternatives for practicing their medical courses while using their medical credentials as part of the new growing workforce.

Commissioner Monchito Ibrahim of the Information and Communications Technology Office (ICTO) under the Department of Science and Technology said:

Recently, I read the book of Robert Kiyosaki entitled, "Rich Dad Poor Dad." Although this doesn't relate to medical transcription, I still want everyone to know what it means on how to get rich. I wasn't able to finish it, at least not yet. But I kept some notes of the lessons he (Rich dad) taught me.

The quotes I got from his book does not relate to a medical transcriptionist. But in some way, either directly or indirectly, any person such as you can apply this lessons in any circumstances of life.

How do you want to study in medical transcription? Do you want to be trained inside a school with lots of e-books that you have to read? Racing yourself to the deadline just to pass the course? But who wants to do all of that anyway when you can actually get out of school and study at anywhere, anytime. Wouldn't a self-paced education be good? But how would you know if you're suited for this type of education?

Practical And General Rules To Remember When Transcribing

There are a lot of rules a medical transcriptionist must abide with but to be practical, I have listed 6 general rules that summarizes all of them for readers to understand and not get bored with reading.

Here are the 6 rules/tips you should always remember when transcribing:

1. Always assume that doctors would always spell wrong. Don’t assume everything you heard is correct. They are the best healthcare practicioners but are often bad spellers. Don't ever trust their spelling when they spell it out for you. It might be spelled wrong. If you're not sure of the spelling given, search for it or leave it blank. Accuracy should always be the #1 concern for all medical reports.

2. Often, physicians will not pronounce the entire word. To quicken the dictation, they will most likely use abbreviations and acronyms such as CABG (often heard as "cabbage") and PERR (usually heard as "per"). Look it up first. Don't transcribe (yet) those words if you're not sure it's consistent with the report.

3. Some doctors inlcude punctuations when dictating such as "comma" and "colon" after every pause. When transcribing, do not include these in the report as words in the sentences.

4. Remember "Verbatim." Transcribe what you hear - word for word. Except for the two I have mentioned earlier.

5. If you can't transcribe the word, better leave it blank than guessing. If you can't understand the word, it's better to leave it out blank than putting a word that you are uncertain of. Blanks are always better than sound alikes. It’s better to admit your defeat than to acting smart.

6. Keep the patient's record private. Always keep it to yourself. As you know, it is strictly prohibited to spread/disseminate any personal information that would compromise the patient's privacy. So don't talk about it. Even if it's contagious.

Qualities Of The Perfect Medical Transcriptionist

What would a "perfect" medical transcriptionist be or look like? If you'd ask me, he would probably have the following qualifications...

1. Very broad knowledge over medical terminologies. More like a pharmacist or a doctor that knows drug spellings (brand and generic names), anatomical and physiological terms and lab procedures.

2. Indestructible eardrums, hands, fingers, and wrists. With so many difficult dictations, he'd have to repeat the whole record again and again, punching those keys multiple times.

3. Able to survive for long periods of time on coffee, tea, and soft drinks. That's a lot of caffeine.

4. Little need for sleep. If he can take only small catnaps in between working hours, that's a plus for productivity.

.5. Extraordinary urinary bladder control. He won't pee for a long period of time.

6. Ability to type 700 words per minute continuously and without interruptions. Is that even possible?

7. Ability to focus only on the dictator's voice. He can't hear the noise behind the doctor.

8. Don't have any interest or whatsoever in celebrating major holidays. No participation during Christmas for him. I'd say...

9. Has a closer personal relationship with the employees of a 24/7 pharmacy, more than his family.

10. If with family, has self-raising children who can live out on their own without any help. Just like plants, you plant them, and they grow themselves.

11. Ability to transcribe while sleeping. Now, that's unbelievable.

12. Husband and/or roommate who is willing to cook, clean, do the laundry, feed the dog, and take care of the children in complete silence. Without any complaints.

13. Minimal interest to anything that resembles a social life. They don't want to mingle with somebody else.

If you have these qualities, I would much rather call you "Robot." That's for sure.

How To Increase Your Productivity While Transcribing

If you are a medical transcriptionist, you also know that how much you earn is based on productivity. The more lines you can produce, the more money you can earn. But for the work to be done, problems always arise. Difficult dictations. The physician speaks 115 miles per hour, or speaks with an indecipherable accent and you can't make some sense out of it. And when you have finished your report, you go back and review it. And you still have 14 blanks.

Having to review your work decreases your productivity. Whenever you review your work, you are either uncertain that you have typed the correct word or that you have left a lot of blanks that needs to be filled out. You put "X" minutes to just to edit and proofread the report. I understand you want quality in your work, but quantity is equally important as quality. But if you can reduce that time to edit and proofread your work, you'd produce more lines. Hence increased productivity.

Normally, some would say that the most effective way to increase your productivity is through the use of the following:

Word Expanders
Keyboard Shortcuts
Autocorrects
Using References
Macros
Templating
and the 7 useful techniques I use

I tell you, there is another way to increase your productivity.
You have to decrease the audio speed of your transcriber by up to 25%. Often times, this alternative is not considered because they believe that decreasing the audio speed would probably increase the time it takes to transcribe a file, hence decrease productivity.

It's partially true and partially false.

Partially true, because it really increases the time to transcribe an EASY FILE. And when I say, "Easy", I meant, very clear dictations. and...

Partially false, because as opposed to others might say, it increases that chances that you will HEAR that unfamiliar word the physician is dictating especially when the dictation is difficult. In turn, it will "DECREASE" the time it will take for you to repeat/rewind the file. LESS EDITING AND PROOFREADING.

My formula for increased productivity:

DECREASED AUDIO SPEED = LESS EDITING AND PROOFREADING = INCREASED PRODUCTIVITY

7 Techniques On How To Reduce Blanks In Medical Transcription

In medical transcription, we cannot avoid those inaudible or indecipherable terms that leave out a blank in our reports. It can be due to doctor's accent, background noise, a new word, physician turuning back to the microphone and a lot of other explanations that may opt us to leave blanks. Is there a way to minimize these blanks physicians are mumbling about? Perhaps yes, to some degree we can minimize blanks. But how? Below here is a list of some of the blank filling techniques that I’ve practiced and is quite useful.

1. Don't think of the spelling, think of the pronounciation first.
Think of how the word is pronounced. If you heard a word that sounded like "metrorade plyography", you could easily find a word that would sound similar to it. By the way - it's retrograde plyeography.

2. Search through related topics.
If you can't seem to find the word related to your search, find key words that are related to it. Use main topics such as body systems and surgical procedures. If it is a drug, Use key words such as antibiotics, antidepressants, antihypertensives, etc.

3. Search through the internet.
If you think that the term is not listed or cannot be found on your computer, you could look up through the internt. You could use GoogleMT.com This is a site that is specially customized for MTs who have problems with word searches. Don't worry about the spelling as the internet Autocorrects the spelling of the word you typed.

4. Ask another MT
Another rule of thumb in medical transcription is that you could always ask for assistance from a fellow medical transcriptionist. He/she could be your senior, your editor, manager, seatmate. Nonetheless, what other MTs can't hear, others can. You should always consider that option. Don't be afraid to tell others that you can't decipher that word, because everyone has a weak point. Others may understand the same word while some cannot.

5. Refer to other or similar reports
Unbelievable as it may seem but most physicians use the same words and terms over and over again. So if you have the same doctor dictating again and again and somehow did not understand a word he/she just said, you could look up to a previous report that doctor has dictated.

6. Try to remember
With so many dictations you try to transcribe in a day, you almost forgot to recognize a physicians voice that has rung your ears for quite sometime. Always remember, if you can, one of your physician's voice and accent. This will, in time, help reduce your blanks in your report. As the same doctor, will use the same words over and over again.

7. Search for the whole phrase
One of the techniques I've used in searching unfamiliar words is that I include in my search the words that comes after or before the unfamiliar word I wanted to search. Most of the time, something good will come out. The phrase you searched will be there including that unfamiliar word you've been searching.

Filling out blanks is a time-consuming process. Unless you are certain that the word you used will match the context and what the doctor dictates, don’t gamble by just inserting any phonetically similar word. After all these are permanent health records that would literally affect the patient's health. Remember, blanks are always a thousand times better than sound alikes and errors and it’s better to admit your defeat than to act smart.

No matter how many repetitions a medical transcriptionist try to transcribe an abstruse term, errors will most likely occur. And in most cases, he/she may not realize how funny the words or phrases would actually sound, turning errors into very hilarious bloopers, even the doctors will laugh about.

During a dictation, the physician articulates the necessary information through verbal expression. However, the physician may opt to use nonverbal communication to express the full meaning of what he intends to explain but often fail to know that nonverbal explanations can not be transcribed. Instead, the MT misinterprets the meaning of what the physician wanted to say, making errors based on how the transcriptionist understands it.

The results, sometimes, are just too hilarious. What seemed to be medical transcription errors, now turned into funny bloopers and blunders. Here are some of the physicians dictated reports that were derived from many medical transcription reports:

The patient is somewhat ambivalent about the Medicaid application, since apparently he has a large surplus which he would not like to share with the Department of Social Services.
