Ensures correct patient labeling of all materials received. Interprets results of special studies, distinguishing negative results from failed study. Uses independent judgement in tissue fixation issues.<br>2. Embeds routine and complex tissue in paraffin, orienting according to tissue type indicated on worksheet. Checks surgical case number and verifies on worksheet. Records on grossing sheets the number of blocks received and organizes blocks for sectioning.<br>3. Sections paraffin blocks of routine and complex tissue from 2 to 50 microns using a microtome. Mounts paraffin section on microscopic slide and transfers surgical case number to slide. Verifies match of surgical case number between blocks and slides.<br>4. Performs frozen sections of routine and complex tissue for immunohistochemistry and enzyme histochemistry.<br>5. May perform other specialized histologic procedures such as nerve teasing, limited routine immunohistochemistry and microtomy utilizing a sliding microtome.<br>6. Performs Handamp;E staining, and routine and complex special staining of paraffin embedded tissue according to instructions on requisition paperwork. Verifies match of surgical case number between slides and paperwork.<br>7. Coverslips prepared slides manually and utilizing automated systems. Records in laboratory logbooks all slides and stains prepared. Logs appropriate information into the surgical pathology computer system. Verifies match of surgical case number.<br>8. Organizes slides for distribution to residents, fellows and/or senior pathologists according to requisition paperwork and worksheets. Documents and follows up with senior pathologist any errors encountered.<br>9. Responsible for filing and accurate record keeping of paraffin tissue blocks.<br>10. Responsible for documentation of daily QA/QC charts for all laboratory equipment.<br>11. Independently troubleshoots problems relating to routine operation of laboratory. Evaluates existing protocols and recommends changes.<br>12. Orients and trains new and less advanced laboratory staff.<br>13. Competent in the use of a pH meter. The center is a multi-institutional service located at Brigham and Womenand#x2019;s Hospital providing Molecular Diagnostics and Cytogenetics.  The Personalized Cancer Medicine Partnership (PCMP) is a collaborative venture between two Harvard Medical School affiliated institutions, the Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, to advance translational and personalized cancer medicine by implementing tumor genomic profiling on all cancer patients treated at these institutions. PCMP<br>CAMD and PCMP process approximately 15,000 - 25,000 specimens annually, with 36 - 40 FTE technicians, as well as 16 - 18 FTE professional staff members. <br>Reporting to the Center Administrator, this position is responsible for receiving, accessioning, coordinating and tracking specimens; handling inquiries from clinicians; verifying patient and client documentation; patient registration; billing; transcribing, faxing and filing reports.  This position requires cutting paraffin blocks after instruction in basic histology skills and data entry into the Laboratory Information System.<br><br>PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES<br>1. Administrative functions:<br>a. Receives test requests.  Verifies and gathers patient and test information as needed.  Documents information associated with patient specimens, testing and inquiries.  Evaluates requisition information and accessions cases into Power Path.<br>b. Independently troubleshoots routine problems related to specimen and patient information.<br>c. Creates accurate lists of specimens (blocks/slides) for retrieval.<br>d. Retrieves and organizes paraffin blocks/slides from the hospital material banks.<br>e. Organizes slides for pathologistand#x2019;s review and records the pathologistand#x2019;s annotations.<br>f. Expedites requests for rapid test processing and facilitates communication between clinicians and Laboratory professional staff.<br>g. Enter data of patient medical record information into computer, assign surgical pathology accession numbers, edit and confirm patient charge information, using laboratory information system<br>15. Troubleshoot problems that arise dealing with mislabeling of specimens, specimens missing in processing, etc., working with senior staff and other departmental personnel as necessary, as well as other clinical staff in the hospital.<br>16. The center is a multi-institutional service located at Brigham and Womenand#x2019;s Hospital providing Molecular Diagnostics and Cytogenetics.  The Personalized Cancer Medicine Partnership (PCMP) is a collaborative venture between two Harvard Medical School affiliated institutions, the Brigham and Women's Hospital and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, to advance translational and personalized cancer medicine by implementing tumor genomic profiling on all cancer patients treated at these institutions. PCMP<br>CAMD and PCMP process approximately 15,000 - 25,000 specimens annually, with 36 - 40 FTE technicians, as well as 16 - 18 FTE professional staff members. <br>Reporting to the Center Administrator, this position is responsible for receiving, accessioning, coordinating and tracking specimens; handling inquiries from clinicians; verifying patient and client documentation; patient registration; billing; transcribing, faxing and filing reports. Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens received and interprets results of special studies. Embeds, sections and stains a wide variety of routine and complex tissue. Performs routine and complex special stains, coverslips slides, and accurately labels slides and blocks. If qualified, may be required to perform immunohistochemistry. Records work in laboratory logs with a high level of accuracy. Maintains laboratory equipment and working solutions for stains. Independently trouble-shoots problems relating to routine operation of laboratory. Orients and trains new and less advanced laboratory staff.<br>PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES<br>1. Maintains diagnostic viability of all specimens received. Ensures correct labeling of all materials received. Interprets results of special studies, distinguishing negative results from failed study. Uses independent judgment in tissue fixation issues.<br>2. Embeds routine and complex tissue in paraffin, orienting according to tissue type indicated on the user worksheet. Checks SHP case number and verifies on worksheet. Organizes blocks for sectioning.<br>3. Sections paraffin blocks of routine and complex tissue from 2 to 50 microns using a microtome. Mounts paraffin section on microscopic slide and transfers SHP case number to slide. Verifies match of SHP case number between blocks and slides.<br>4. Performs frozen sections of routine and complex tissue for immunohistochemistry and enzyme histochemistry.<br>5. May perform other specialized histologic procedures such as routine immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization.<br>6. Performs Handamp;E staining, and routine and complex special staining of paraffin embedded tissue according to instructions on requisition paperwork. Verifies match of SHP case number between slides and paperwork.<br>7. Coverslips prepared slides manually and utilizing automated systems. Records in laboratory logbooks all slides and stains prepared. Logs appropriate information into the SHP database. Verifies match of SHP case number.<br>8. Organizes slides and blocks for distribution to core pathologists and users according to requisition paperwork and worksheets. Documents and follows up with pathologist on duty any errors encountered.<br>9. Responsible for documentation of daily QA/QC charts for all laboratory equipment.<br>10. Independently troubleshoots problems relating to routine operation of laboratory. Evaluates existing protocols and recommends changes.<br>11. Orients and trains new and less advanced laboratory staff.<br>12. Competent in the use of a pH meter. Understands the theory of molarity and buffer solutions.<br>13. Prepares and maintains working solutions for routine Handamp;E staining on automatic stainers, including daily quality control. Prepares and maintains working solutions of routine and complex special stains, including maintaining acceptable working volumes.<br>14. Maintains individual microtome and other laboratory equipment in proper working order, following appropriate laboratory safety protocols. Extensive knowledge of all laboratory equipment.<br>15. Maintains established department policies, procedures and objectives, including the areas of quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control.<br> 16. Performs all other duties and responsibilities as directed. </td></tr><tr> <td valign="top" align="left"><br><font size=1>Requirements:</font></td></tr><tr> <td valign="top" align="left">and#x2022; High school diploma or equivalency required. A.S., B.S. or B.A. in a biological or chemical science and/or completion of a NAACLS accredited histology technician training program highly desired.<br>and#x2022; Minimum 2 years experience in Histology required.
