Cynthia Ann Stephanie Lauper (born June 22, 1953) is an American singer, songwriter, actress and LGBT rights activist. Her career has spanned over 30 years.Her debut solo album She's So Unusual (1983) was the first debut female album to chart four top-five hits on the Billboard Hot 100—"Girls Just Want to Have Fun", "Time After Time", "She Bop", and "All Through the Night"—and earned Lauper the Best New Artist award at the 27th Grammy Awards in 1985. Her success continued with the soundtrack for the motion picture The Goonies and her second record True Colors (1986). This album included the number one single "True Colors" and "Change of Heart", which peaked at number three.

Since 1989, Lauper has released nine studio albums and participated in many other projects. In 2010, Memphis Blues, became Billboard's most successful blues album of the year, remaining at number one on the Billboard Blues Albums chart for 13 consecutive weeks. In 2013, Lauper won the Tony Award for best original score for composing the Broadway musical Kinky Boots, making her the first woman to win the category by herself. The musical was awarded five other Tonys including Tony Award for Best New Musical. In 2014, Lauper was awarded the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album for the cast recording. Lauper has established herself as a pop culture icon^[ selling over 50 million records and 20 million singles. She has won awards at the Grammys, Emmys, Tonys, the New York's Outer Critics Circle, MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), Billboard Awards, and American Music Awards (AMAs).^[9] An inductee into both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Lauper is one of the few singers to win three of the four major American entertainment awards (EGOT).

LaDonna Adrian Gaines (December 31, 1948 – May 17, 2012), known by her stage name, Donna Sommer, later Donna Summer, was an American singer, songwriter, and painter. She gained prominence during the disco era of the late 1970s. A five-time Grammy Award winner, she was the first artist to have three consecutive double albums reach No. 1 on the United States Billboard album chart and charted four number-one singles in the United States within a 12-month period.

Summer has reportedly sold over 130 million records, making her one of the world's best-selling artists of all time.

Born into a devoutly Christian middle-class family in Boston, Massachusetts, Summer first became involved with singing through church choir groups before joining a number of bands influenced by the Motown Sound. Also influenced by the counter culture of the 1960s, she became the front singer of a psychedelic rock band named Crow and moved to New York City. Joining a touring version of the musical Hair, she left New York and spent several years living, acting, and singing in West Germany, where she met music producers, Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte. Also while in Europe, she married Helmut Sommer. After their divorce, she would keep his surname for her stage name; dropping the "o" and replacing it with a "u" for "Summer".

After returning to the United States, Summer co-wrote the song "Love to Love You Baby" with Pete Bellotte. The song was released in 1975 to mass commercial success. Over the following years Summer followed this success with a string of other hits, such as "I Feel Love", "Last Dance", "MacArthur Park", "Hot Stuff", "Bad Girls", "Dim All the Lights", "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)", and "On the Radio". She became known as the "Queen of Disco" and regularly appeared at the Studio 54 nightclub in New York City, while her music gained a global following. She struggled with depression and addiction, and subsequently she became a born-again Christian in 1980.

Diagnosed with lung cancer, Summer died on May 17, 2012, at her home in Naples, Florida. She has been described as the "undisputed queen of the Seventies disco boom" who reached the status of "one of the world's leading female singers."Moroder described Summer's work with him on the song "I Feel Love" as "really the start of electronic dance" music. Tony Orlando and Dawn was a pop music group that was popular in the 1970s. Their signature hits include "Candida", "Knock Three Times", "Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree", and "He Don't Love You (Like I Love You)".

Tony Orlando was born Michael Anthony Orlando Cassavitis in April 1944.After almost a decade of singing and with only three Top 40 hits, two in 1961 and another in 1969 as the lead singer for the studio group Wind, he had not had any further successes. He stopped singing entirely, and by 1970 he was a retired cover singer. He began publishing music for April-Blackwood Music, a division of Columbia Records, instead.

A song was given to Orlando titled "Candida," and was brought to him after being turned down by other producers and singers. Orlando was not able to originally lend his name to the song as he was working for April-Blackwood, and recording under his own name would be a professional conflict of interest. After an insistence by producer Hank Medress that he dub his voice over the male vocals on the original track, the single was released on Bell Records as being performed by the band "Dawn" in order to protect his position.

The background singers on the track were Sharon Greane, Linda November, Jay Siegel, and Toni Wine, who co-wrote the song. Phil Margo played drums on the original session and the arranger was Norman Bergen. After the single hit #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart (#1 on the Cashbox Top 100), Orlando wanted to start performing again. The group's next single, "Say, Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose" (from their concept album Dawn's New Ragtime Follies) went to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. CBS gave the group a television variety show in the summer of 1974, after The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour ended its run. The show was in the same vein as its predecessor (with sketches featuring sarcastic back-and-forth banter between Orlando with Hopkins and Wilson, similar to the sarcastic dialogue between Sonny and Cher), and became a Top 20 hit. It ran until December 1976.

With a new name ("Tony Orlando and Dawn") and a new record label (Elektra), the group continued their string of hit singles during the show's run hitting the Top 10 on the Hot 100 and/or adult contemporary charts including "He Don't Love You (Like I Love You)" (a reworking of Jerry Butler's "He Will Break Your Heart") which went to #1. In 1976 a remake of the Sam Cooke song "Cupid" became the group's last Top 40 single on the Billboard Hot 100. "Sing" reached #7 on the Adult Contemporary Chart in 1977 and was the last Tony Orlando & Dawn single until 1991's "With Ev'ry Yellow Ribbon (That's Why We Tie 'Em)". Donna Summer was the Queen of Disco in the 1970s with a pop/dance/rock sound that was a hybrid of American soul and European synthesizer based music. Summer's musical career was launched on stage in Munich, Germany, in productions of Hair and Porgy & Bess.

In Germany, she hooked up with producers, Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, and delivered the orgasmic "Love to Love You Baby" which brought her worldwide fame. Summer was the first female artist to garner back-to-back multi-platinum double albums and the first female artist to incorporate synthesizers as well as the first artist to create an extended play song. Musically, she diversified into pop and rock, while career-wise, she appeared in the disco dud, Thank God It's Friday (1978), for which the song, "Last Dance" won an Academy Award for Best Song, as well as numerous American TV music specials.

Her career continued into the 1980s with the release of the album "The Wanderer", a diverse fusion of rock and dance. Soon afterward, Summer announced that she was a born-again Christian. She was then accused of making anti-gay comments in relation to the AIDS epidemic. Although Summer later claimed that she had been misquoted, thousands of her records were returned to her record companies by angered fans and there was a worldwide boycott of her music in dance clubs. Summer returned to the charts in in the late 80s and early 90s with various dance hits. She recently ended her longtime association with Polygram and moved to Nashville to work on country music and to pursue her other passion, painting. In 1998, she won a Grammy for Best Dance Single and has plans to launch a Broadway musical, "Ordinary Girl", based on her life.

Donna Summer rocketed to international superstardom in the mid-1970s when her groundbreaking merger of R&B, soul, pop, funk, rock, disco and avant-garde electronica catapulted underground dance music out of the clubs of Europe to the pinnacles of sales and radio charts around the world.

Maintaining an unbroken string of hits throughout the 70s and 80s, most of which she wrote, Donna holds the record for most consecutive double albums to hit #1 on the Billboard charts (3) and first female to have four #1 singles in a 12 month period; 3 as a solo artist and one as a duo with Barbra Streisand.

Born Donna Gaines on New Year's Eve to a large family in Boston, she developed an early interest in music. Chicago Biography

Chicago is one of the most successful rock bands in America and they are among the Top Ten best-selling US musical groups of all time. With hits such as ‘Hard To Say I’m Sorry’, ‘If You Leave Me Now’, ‘You’re the Inspiration’, and ‘Hard Habit to Break’, Chicago may well be most widely identified from the Peter Cetera and its era of radio-friendly power ballads, but its career spans further and wider than their string of No. 1's.

Chicago the band was formed, unsurprisingly enough, in Chicago the city, in Illinois, and the largest in the American Midwest. The city’s rich diversity in population and cultures meant that the band members were steeped in a rich goulash of musical styles and philosophies.

The Chicago blues was a wonderful movement in the 40s that melded Mississippi/delta black music, the “original” blues, with a new rock edge – Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf were the most famous children of this movement, with other luminaries like Paul Butterfield, Buddy Guy, Sonny Boy Williamson and BB King.

But Chicago saxophonist and founding member Walter Parazaider cites the King of Swing, Benny Goodman, as being his primary influence to start playing. Parazaider was nine and a clarinetist to start with.

After studying and practising for a number of years, he was a classically proficient musician whose dream was to take his teacher’s place on the Chicago Symphony. However, he also picked up the saxophone along the way, as he “discovered that you could make a buck and get some girls playing a saxophone in a rock 'n roll band.” Parazaider enrolled in DePaul University, continuing his moonlighting gigs as well as continuing to take classical clarinet classes.

Trumpeter Lee Loughnane was also at DePaul, taking a teaching degree. He bumped into Parazaider through a mutual friend, future Chicago guitarist Terry Kath. Kath was a childhood friend of Parazaider and played with him in their band Missing Links, together with drummer Danny Seraphine. Kath and Seraphine, although lacking a formal musical education were talented musicians who learnt the ropes the hard way: on the stage.

The addition of Loughnane to Missing Links gave impetus to Parazaider’s vision of having a rock band with a horn section. R&B bands already had this concept, such as James Brown, and The Beatles paved the way with their ‘Revolver’ album. However, it had never been tried out in a rock context with the horn section as an integral part of the band’s sound.

They needed more musicians, and the first to be approached was James Pankow, a recent transferee to DePaul from Quincy College who played trombone. Pankow was not from Chicago; he was from St Louis, Missouri, another area with a proud tradition of the blues. Originally he had not wanted to play trombone, because it wasn’t cool, unlike sax, guitar or drums. It wasn’t easy either starting out: it was physically difficult for a ten year old to manoeuvre such a cumbersome instrument. But he persevered, and won a full musical scholarship to Quincy College.

They still needed bass and keyboards to round out the band. They thought they had found both in organist Robert Lamm. Born in Brooklyn, New York, Lamm was asked if he could fill in the bass lines on the organ pedals, and he lied, saying that he could. Thus, The Big Thing was born, consisting of Parazaider (sax), Seraphine (drums), Kath (guitarist), Loughnane (trumpet), Pankow (trombone) and Lamm (organ and bass). Rehearsing in Parazaider’s basement, they learnt a repertoire of James Brown and Wilson Pickett material. This was in 1967.

The Big Thing became a regular on the Midwest club circuit, and on one fortuitous evening, they opened for a band called the Exceptions, “the biggest club band in the Midwest”, according to Pankow. The Big Thing then had the audacity to nick the Exceptions’ bass player, Peter Cetera.

Cetera was also a Chicago boy, taking up the accordion at age 10. He later switched to bass and joined the Exceptions. Loughnane explains Cetera’s inclusion: “We needed a bass player at the time. Robert was playing the bass pedals on the organ…there just wasn't enough bottom with the bass pedals. You needed a real bass in the band. And we needed a tenor voice…When Peter joined the band, that solidified our vocals.”

The band was now renamed Chicago Transit Authority, perhaps aptly named as the band was asked to leave Chicago and relocate to LA, in late 1968. Kath, Pankow and especially Lamm were writing large amounts of original material for the band. Parazaider’s long time friend and producer Jimmy Guercio was trying to get the band signed on CBS; the band’s demo and Guercio’s persistence led to the CBS big-wigs signing them.

In January 1969, the band went to New York to record their first album. Finding that they had too much material, they suggested doing a double album, which CBS agreed to on condition that they cut their royalties. ‘The Chicago Transit Authority’ (1969) was an audaciously ambitious double album, with audible influences from the Beatles to Jimi Hendrix, from the soulful to the rock-out bash, from howling guitar solos to smooth horn passages. It eventually peaked on the Billboard chart at no. 17. Soon after the release, the band changed its name to simply Chicago.

Simply ‘Chicago’ (1970) was also the name of their second double album, and was just as ambitious as its predecessor. Perhaps the most adventurous recording so far was the 13-minute ‘Ballet For A Girl In Buchannon’, penned by the classical-leaning Pankow. As a result of a broken jaw and some quiet writing time, Cetera too contributed some material towards the album.

January 1971 came, and it was time to record their third double album, simply titled ‘Chicago III’ (1971) – Chicago were to use this system of naming their future albums, because they felt that the songs simply spoke for themselves. ‘Chicago III’ netted another cache of hit singles, including Cetera’s ‘Lowdown’ and Lamm’s ‘Free’.

In October 1971, CBS released a four-record box set that covered the band’s week-long sell-out shows at Carnegie Hall. The feeling about that performance was mixed: Cetera and Pankow hated the sound on it, but Parazaider felt a justifiable sense of pride at the band’s unique achievement. After a world tour, ‘Chicago V’ (1972) was recorded. It was also a milestone in that it was the band’s first single disc album. Famous for Lamm’s ‘A Song for Richard and His Friends’, the song seemed to foreshadow Nixon’s later impeachment for Watergate. The album marked a departure from the band’s earlier extended instrumental jam-oramas, featuring nine tightly crafted pop songs.

The band took a break from recording and touring by working on producer Guercio’s film, ‘Electra Glide in Blue’ (1973), starring Robert Blake and featuring Kath, Loughnane, Parazaider and Cetera. ‘Chicago VI’ (1973) was recorded on Guercio’s newly acquired ranch in Colorado. The solitude helped focus the band’s creative energies, with Pankow penning the two hit singles ‘Feelin’ Stronger Every Day’ and ‘Just You ‘N Me’.

Just a couple of months after the release of ‘Chicago VI’, the group gathered at Guercio’s ranch to record what would be their seventh album. The original intention was to do a jazz record, hence ‘Italian From New York’, ‘Aire’, and ‘Devil's Sweet’ were written by Lamm, Seraphine, Parazaider, and Pankow. Cetera however never saw himself as a jazz musician, which explains his diminished contribution songwriting-wise on ‘Chicago VII’ (1974). Despite this, he did pen one of Chicago’s most famous songs, ‘Wishing You Were Here’, which featured Carl and Dennis Wilson and Alan Jardine from the Beach Boys. The relationship between the bands was so good that they embarked on a sold-out nationwide tour the following summer. 1974 also saw the arrival of an eighth member, Brazilian percussionist Laudir De Oliveira.

1975 was a good year for Chicago. ‘Chicago VIII’ (1975) was released, and worldwide record sales for this single year were 20 million copies. A greatest-hits compilation, ‘Chicago IX’ (1975) was released in November. June 1976 saw the release of ‘Chicago X’ (1976), with the massive, instantly recognisable hit ‘If You Leave Me Now’, a song that barely made the final cut. ‘Chicago X’ won the band its first platinum record, selling a million copies in three months, and ‘If You Leave Me Now’ went to the top of the Billboard singles chart. The single won them a Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus, but typecast the band into the saccharine ballad format that some members were unhappy about (especially Kath and Lamm).

‘Chicago XI’ was released in 1977, but tensions were mounting between producer Guercio and the band, resulting in a split. A few months later, tragedy struck when Kath died of an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound. Devastated, the band tried to regroup by auditioning guitarists, eventually hiring Donnie Dacus.

Their new era started with them entering a new studio with a new producer and a new guitarist, resulting in ‘Hot Streets’ (1978). It was their first studio album not to follow the Roman numeral sequence, and also the first to feature the band on the cover instead of its famous logo. The album’s first single ‘Alive Again’ was a direct tribute to Kath.

Chicago was under pressure to change their sound; ‘Chicago 13’ (1979) contained a song called ‘Street Player’ which had a disco flavour. ‘Chicago 13’ did poorly by Chicago standards, with de Oliveira and Dacus leaving soon after to be replaced by Chris Pinnick. ‘Chicago XIV’ (1980) was disappointing as well, and another compilation album was released soon after, ‘Greatest Hits, Volume II’ (1981).

1981 saw the arrival of Bill Champlin, as the band needed someone to sing Kath’s gutsy vocals. Champlin knew Seraphine, and had a close working relationship with Canadian producer and songwriter David Foster. Foster contributed much to ‘Chicago 16’ (1982), co-writing eight of the album's ten songs, including ‘Hard To Say I'm Sorry’. The Foster-Cetera songwriting partnership marked a definite move along the easy-listening balladsy road.

‘Chicago 17’ (1984) was the band’s best-seller. Hits like ‘Hard Habit to Break’ and ‘You’re The Inspiration’ took album sales to over six million. However, Peter Cetera, writer of many of Chicago’s romantic ballads decided to leave in late 1985 to concentrate on his solo career. He was replaced by bassist and tenor singer Jason Scheff, son of the legendary bass player Jerry Scheff.

The band also hired guitarist Dawayne Bailey, from Bob Seger’s Silver Bullet band. ‘Chicago 18’ (1986) was a certified gold album, and after an autumn tour to break in their new singer and guitarist, Chicago recorded ‘Chicago 19’ (1988). ‘Greatest Hits 1982-89’ (1989) and a tour with the Beach Boys followed.

In 1990, Seraphine left to be replaced by Tris Imboden, an Orange County drummer who was Kenny Loggins’ drummer for several years, as well as touring with Chaka Khan and Al Jarreau. ‘Twenty One’ (1991) was recorded, with two Diane Warren contributions, ‘Explain It To My Heart’ and ‘Chasing The Wind’. In 1991, they were honoured with their own star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame.

In 1993, the band began work on a new album, but one which reflected their weariness at the record companies’ insistence on top 40 hits. This resulted in the ‘The Stone of Sisyphus’, which was not released. Warner Bros. disliked the album so much that it parted ways with Chicago.

Forsaking their commercial sound, they then recorded ‘Night and Day (Big Band)’ (1995), which brought the focus back on big band jazz and swing. It contained numbers by the late great jazzman Duke Ellington, a major influence of the band, and featured guest appearances by The Gipsy Kings and Aerosmith’s Joe Perry. Keith Howland joined in early 1995 to replace Dawayne Bailey on guitar. Also in 1995, they secured the rights to their early Columbia material between 1969 and 1980. The catalogue is now reissued on the band’s own Chicago Records label.

In 1997, Chicago teamed up with the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra to perform an orchestral arrangement of Pankow's rock epic ‘Ballet for a Girl in Buchannon’. To commemorate their 30th anniversary, they released the compilation ‘The Heart of Chicago 1967-1997’ (1997), which had two new songs including the ballad ‘Here In My Heart’. The next year, they followed up with ‘The Heart of Chicago 1967 - 1998 Volume II’ (1998). That same year they released ‘Chicago XXV: The Christmas Album’ (1998) which went gold.

In 1999, they released their first live album for over two decades, ‘Chicago XXVI: Live in Concert’ (1999). More compilations and a tour with their good friends Earth, Wind and Fire followed, until ‘Chicago XXX’ (2006). The unreleased 1993 album ‘Stone of Sisyphus’ (2008) finally saw the light of day in 2008, the album once dismissed by Warner Bros. as “unreleased”.

Mayumi Itsuwa (五輪真弓 Itsuwa Mayumi^?) (born January 24, 1951) is a Japanese vocalist, composer, lyricist, and keyboardist who made her debut in 1972.

Her first studio album entitled Shoujo was recorded in Los Angeles, produced by GRAMMY Award winner John Fischbach, with distinguished musicians such as David Campbell, Carole King and Charles Larkey who was King's husband at that time.

Owing to her introspective compositions, Itsuwa was often nicknamed "Japanese Carole King", along with other Japanese singer-songwriters like Yumi Matsutoya (who had worked under her birth name "Yumi Arai" during the mid 1970s) and Minako Yoshida.

Itsuwa gained moderate success on the Japanese albums chart in her early career, and received massive popularity and acclaim through a single "Koibito yo" released in 1980. A song topped the Japan's Oricon chart for three consecutive weeks, and won the 22nd Japan Record Award for "Gold Prize" in a same year. It was covered by the country's legendary singers including Hibari Misora and Noriko Awaya in later years, and became a signature song for Itsuwa.

After "Koibito yo" became a hit, Itsuwa gained popularity also in non-Japanese Asian countries during the 1980s.

In Indonesia,"Kokoro No Tomo" and "Amayadori" become the most popular songs ever released by her. In 2006, Mayumi Itsuwa and Delon Thamrin recorded an Indonesian and Japanese version of the song. This was later included on the 2006 compilation album "Duet Love Songs". Many of her songs would fall into the musical genre of "torch songs" because they often describe the lingering memory of past loves.

Laura Branigan, singer and actress, was born on July 3, 1957 and raised in the upstate New York town of Brewster. It wasn't till her senior year in high school, where she performed the lead role in a school musical, that she began to consider an entertainment career. After graduation from high school, Laura moved to Manhattan and attended The Academy of Dramatic Arts. In the late 70's, she toured Europe as a backing vocalist for Leonard Cohen. Upon Laura's return to New York, it became clear to her that she wanted to pursue a career as a solo artist. Laura's powerful talent as well as her drive and determination led to her being signed by Atlantic Records.

Laura's first major appearance on the pop scene was with the anthem "Gloria" in 1982, which has become the signature song of her career. The track came from Laura's debut album, Branigan. "Gloria" was an enormous hit single, rising to the top of the Billboard charts and staying on the charts for an amazing thirty-six weeks. Laura received a Grammy nomination for Best Pop Vocalist Female for the song.

In 1983, Laura released Branigan 2 and had two more top ten hits with "Solitaire" and "How Am I Supposed To Live Without You", confirming her status as a major artist. Laura could also be heard on the Flashdance soundtrack with "Imagination". Her musical involvement with the film led her to receive her second Grammy nomination. In 1984, the album Self Control was released with the title track, "Self Control" reaching the top ten. Another single from the album, "The Lucky One" went top 40. During the late 90's, Laura took a hiatus from performing, doing only the occasional concert. In early 2001 she made her return to the studio. 2002 saw the release of "The Essentials", a digitally remastered hits compilation. During 2002, Laura also performed the role of the singing Janis Joplin in the hit New York City musical "Love, Janis."

2004 has seen the release of "Self Control 2004" and "Gloria 2004", collections of remixes of the original Branigan classics produced by some of Europe's top remixers, which feature stunning, newly-recorded vocals by Laura. Ace Of Base is something as uncomplicated as a pop band, that doesn’t try to be, appears to be anything else than that. They want to make their listeners feel good when hearing their music. They don’t have any heavy messages, even if the songs obviously have become better crafted and substantial over the years. Simplicity isn’t easy. The fact that Ace of Base has sold over 30 million albums and 15 million singles proves that they know what they’re doing.

In the early autumn of 2002, the band returns with a new album, Da Capo – They’re first with all-new material since ”Flowers/Cruel Summer” (1998). The new album combines the group’s classic pop sound with new, more thoughtful dimensions.

”Ever since our last original album was released, we’ve had our minds set on making this album. People may have thought that we have split up, but those things rather apply to the rest of the music business”, Jenny smiles, referring to the last few years’ acquisitions and mergers among the major labels. Something that without a doubt has slowed down the process of finishing the album.

”The lion’s share of the album has been finished for quite a while”, main songwriter Jonas ”Joker” Berggren confides, but you tend to come up with more stuff as time passes, and some mixes tend to feel a bit old when you’ve lived with them for a couple of years. Making pop music is a little bit like painting, you can keep adding stuff forever, but at some point you have to decide that you’re done with it. A lot of time is spent working on details that the general public usually don’t notice anyway”.

In order to find the right balance of styles, quite a few producers have been enlisted: Swedes Jonas Von Der Burg, Harry Sommerdahl at Pile Studios and Pontus Söderqvist, Martin Hedström and Nick Nice at LaCarr have produced as well as co-written with Jonas Berggren. Other producers include German producers Axel Breitung and Thorsten Brötzmann. During the four years it took to finalize this album, the band wrote more then 150 songs, of which the 11 strongest songs plus the cover song “Wonderful Life” was chosen to become the final album listing. Jonas has written a few songs himself and a few with the band. “It was a great way to rediscover each other as people and writers after a long break from writing together” says Jenny Berggren.

The album showcases the band’s variety within the accessible pop format. The strength of the band’s song writing shows in the first single, “Beautiful Morning”, a slice of pure, classic Ace Of Base pop. ”Ordinary Day” is a classy, harmonious tune with a laid back quality that Jonas’s wife helped him re-discover when he played her some older songs. The album titled ”Da Capo” is a fun up-tempo tune and remains Jonas’s and Ulf’s personal favourite. The ballad ”The Juvenile” is a slow, dramatic thing that was initially written for a James Bond movie. However, the band’s then record label in America persuaded them not to be involved. Instead, a new lyric was written. ”I really like its message, Jenny concurs: ”Basically it says: if you don’t take care of the young now, they’re not going to care for you later on”…

Ace Of Base consists of four distinct personalities. Jonas is the family man, married with two children. Apart from being a typical songwriter, he loves domestic life and interior design, preferring old furniture to modernity’s. Jenny is the more extrovert of the Berggren sisters, she loves dancing in clubs as much as singing in choirs, Linn tries to live a normal life outside of the limelight and is the band’s most low-key member. Both Jenny and Linn see themselves as singers first and foremost and constantly try to evolve by injecting their experiences to their craft. Since Ulf and Jonas wrote the first album, the girls started to show their strengths as songwriters on the band’s second album. They want to inspire everyone to have a go at song writing.

Ulf and Jenny will be doing most of the promotion for the new album, traveling around the world together (as Jenny points out, most bands tend to be represented by two members when it’s time for the promotional trips). ”Ulf is the traditional pop star of the band”, smiles Jonas. ”He loves traveling, mingling and parties and is probably the one who lives up to people’s expectations when it comes to how a pop star ”should” act”. A Jenny ad that there’s more than meets the eye: ”Ulf has always been interested in people and business. He is an entrepreneur and has over the years been given quite responsible roles outside of the band as well. He is an ideas person and a doer and is very good at strategies. Ulf himself agrees with a bit of both descriptions. ”I have chosen to build my life around all this and, since the band opens doors, I have met and got to know a lot of interesting people in all kinds of areas – presidents, actors, musicians, business gurus, and I realized early the value of building a strong global network reaching the whole spectra. I work with several different projects, including my company Legion that is a commercial asset creator, creating entertainment and sports properties for bluechip companies. I was also the senior advisor to Team SEB in the Volvo Ocean Race, which brought me round the world once again. However, these are the fruits of Ace Of Base’s success and Ulf hasn’t lost focus. He is more engaged in the musical aspects than some may think. Constantly traveling, he is the one who can see how pop and club music develops among the young. He has also written or co-written at least 30 songs since the last album. ”Of course I would love to have more of my own songs on the new album, but my main priority is that the album as a whole is as good as it can be”.

Contrary to some reports, Ace Of Base never split up. Most bands spend time apart once in a while. ”I think we’re as close as any band”, says Jenny. ”In addition to that, three of us are actually family, which, to us, is more important than anything else”. ”There’s this myth that members in pop bands always hang out together, live together and wear each others’ shirts” smiles Jonas. ”I think that those are a rare breed, most bands get together to write, record or travel”. Jenny and Linn have also had the unique possibility of often having access to their brother’s studio, The Barn (situated in a barn that used to belong to Jonas great grandfather) for vocal overdubs when they were in the mood to sing. Other vocals were recorded in Stockholm at LaCarr Studios and Pile Studios, but also in Hamburg, where some production work was done as well.

Ace Of Base is one of the world’s biggest bands, one of those rare bands whose name is a well-known brand wherever in the world you go. Their fans, so called ”Acers”, also show a passionate interest in the band. Earlier this year, some of them flew in to Gothenburg from all over the world to get together, share views and opinions on the band, check out the studios where the band has recorded and walk the streets where Ace Of Base grew up.

A brief history

The Ace Of Base story started in the early 90’s when the three Berggren siblings formed the techno band Tech Noir. Next to their rehearsal room, Ulf Ekberg played in another band. Soon, Jonas and Ulf hit it off, started to write and produce together and Ace Of Base as we know them were formed. After having recorded a demo of original songs, including ”All That She Wants”, the band went to Stockholm where they visited all major record companies. No one showed any interest. (Jonas later remembered somebody explaining that the songs were ”too obvious, too simple”). Next step was Copenhagen, where Mega Records immediately saw the band’s potential and loved their positive, uncomplicated and slightly reggae-tinged pop music.

During the production of their first album the band got to know Denniz Pop, an ex-DJ who had enjoyed international chart success as a writer and producer for Dr Alban. Denniz had listened to the demo of ”All That She Wants” in his car stereo every day going to work at Cheiron studios. Denniz got involved in Ace Of Base’s album that was the start for the international recognition of Cheiron and followed by successes like Backstreet Boys, Britney Spears, N’sync and Five.

Ace Of Base’s very first single was ”Wheel Of Fortune”, followed by the major worldwide hit ”All That She Wants”. ”The Sign” and ”Don’t Turn Around” also became international hits. The band first made it in Denmark, then the rest of Scandinavia, Germany, the rest of Europe and Asia before conquering The US and Canada.

In all, the debut album ”Happy Nation/The Sign” sold 23 million copies and remains in the Guinness book of records as the best-selling debut album ever. Achieving numerous of awards such as 6 World Music Awards, 3 Billboard Awards, 3 America Music Awards, several different European Grammy Awards and two American Grammy nominations! To mention a few!

On April 2 1994 both album and single ”The Sign” topped the Billboard Top 100 Charts simultaneously. ”The Sign” remains number 3 at the Billboard’s Greatest Hits chart (Top 100 Billboard 100th Anniversary August 4th 1958 - June 25 1994), only beaten by Whitney Houston’s ”I Will Always Love You” and Boy’z’2Men’s ”End Of The Road”. When Billboard summed up the most sold albums of the 20th century, ”Happy Nation”/”The Sign” ended up top ten, being the most popular non-American album of all time… ”One thing that was unique is that it was the same versions that were played at clubs/discotheques and by radio. No remixes or tailor-made versions”, Ulf remembers.

When beginning to write and record for the second album ”The Bridge”, the pressure was on and everybody wanted to have their say. Everyone realized that the phenomenal success of the debut would be impossible to repeat. With the help of hit singles like ”Lucky Love”, ”Beautiful Life” and ”Never Gonna Say I’m Sorry” and promotional trips around the world the album ”The Bridge” sold 5 million copies, a number most musicians only dream of. Ace Of Base had proved that they had come to stay. ”We reached a level that we’re comfortable with. We’re a pop band and not an industry”, Jenny states. ”After the extreme initial success we now have the time to enjoy what’s happened”.

Back in Sweden the band returned to the studio to write for the band’s third album ”Flowers”/”Cruel Summer”). The first single was ”Life Is A Flower”, which was an immediate success. It got an award for the most played song on European radio in 1998. The lyric was changed in America, where the song was called ”Whenever You’re Near Me”. The Bananarama cover ”Cruel Summer” became the title track of the American album, the single reaching the American top ten. Other hits included ”Travel To Romantis” and ”Always Have, Always Will”. Notable is the fact that three of the singles from ”Flowers” reached top ten in England, where the band have performed on the famous show Top Of the Pops an astonishing 18 times!

In the autumn of 1999 the greatest hits album ”Singles Of The 90’s was released, including all the band’s worldwide hits and some new songs. ”Every time It Rains” had only been included on the ”Cruel Summer” album and was previously unreleased in Europe.

30.th. of September 2002 marks the release of an all-new album from Ace Of Base – an important cornerstone in the Swedish music export.

Kenneth Ray "Kenny" Rogers (born August 21, 1938, in Houston, Texas) is an American country music singer-songwriter, photographer, record producer, actor and entrepreneur. He has been very successful, charting more than 70 hit singles across various music genres and topping the country and pop album charts for more than 420 individual weeks in the United States alone.

Two of his albums, The Gambler and Kenny, are featured in the About.com poll of "The 200 Most Influential Country Albums Ever". He was voted the "Favorite Singer of All-Time" in a 1986 joint poll by readers of both USA Today and People. He has received hundreds of awards for both his music and charity work. These include AMAs, Grammys, ACMs and CMAs, as well as a lifetime achievement award for a career spanning six decades in 2003.

Success in recent years include the 2006 album release, Water & Bridges, an across the board hit, that peaked at #5 in the Billboard Country Albums sales charts, also charting high in the Billboard 200. The first single from the album, "I Can't Unlove You," was also a chart hit. Remaining a popular entertainer around the world, the following year he completed a tour of the United Kingdom and the Ireland telling BBC Radio 2 DJ Steve Wright, his favorite hit of his was "The Gambler". Biography

Kenny Rogers was the fourth of seven children born to Floyd Rogers, a carpenter, and his wife Lucille, a nurse. Rogers graduated from Jefferson Davis High School in Houston. According to the Texas birth records, his middle given name is Ray and he is sometimes credited in his film roles as "Kenneth Ray Rogers".

He has been married five times. His fourth wife was the actress Marianne Gordon Rogers. His current wife is the former Wanda Miller. He has a daughter and four sons, including twins born when Rogers was 65.

As of 2005, Rogers has become an avid Atlanta Thrashers fan, and can often be seen at Philips Arena taking in a game. He was also a singer in the song "We Are the World".

Career

Early career

His career began in the mid-1950s, when he recorded with a doo-wop group called The Scholars who had some success with a single called "Poor Little Doggie". Rogers was not the lead singer of the group and after two more singles they disbanded when their leader went solo.

Now on his own, Kenneth Rogers (as he was billed then) followed the break up with his own single, a minor solo hit called "That Crazy Feeling" (1958). After sales slowed down, Rogers joined a jazz group called The Bobby Doyle Trio, who got a lot of work in clubs thanks to a reasonable fan following and also recorded for Columbia Records. The group disbanded in 1965, and a 1966 jazzy rock single Rogers recorded for Mercury Records, called "Here's That Rainy Day" failed. Rogers also worked as a producer, writer and session musician for other performers; including country artists Mickey Gilley and Eddy Arnold. In 1966 he joined the New Christy Minstrels as a singer and double bass player.

Feeling that the Minstrels were not offering the success they wanted, Rogers and fellow members Mike Settle, Terry Williams and Thelma Camacho left the group. They formed The First Edition in 1967 (later renamed "Kenny Rogers and The First Edition"). They chalked up a string of hits on both the pop and country charts, including "Somethings Burning", "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town", "Reuben James" and "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)." In his First Edition days, Rogers had something of a hippie image, with long brown hair, an earring, and pink sunglasses. Known affectionately in retrospect as "Hippie Kenny", Rogers had a much smoother vocal style than in his later career.

When the group split in 1976, Rogers launched his solo career. Rogers soon developed a more middle of the road sound, with a somewhat rough but tuneful voiced style that sold to both pop and country audiences; to date, he has charted more than 60 top 40 hit singles (including upwards of 25 #1's) and 50 of his albums have charted. His music has also been featured in top selling movie soundtracks, such as Convoy, Urban Cowboy and The Big Lebowski.

Solo career

After leaving The First Edition in 1976, after almost a decade with the group, Rogers signed a solo deal with United Artists. Although producer Larry Butler had no doubts about Rogers' talent, he was advised by several colleagues not to sign Rogers, who some saw as a has-been. Nevertheless, Butler and Rogers began a partnership that would last four years.

Rogers first outing for his new label was Love Lifted Me. The album charted and two singles "Love Lifted Me" and "While The Feeling's Good" were minor hits. The song "Runaway Girl" was featured in the motion picture Trackdown. Later in 1976, Rogers issued his second album, the self-titled Kenny Rogers, whose first single "Laura (What's He Got That I Ain't Got)", was another solo hit.

However, the single "Lucille" (1977) was a major hit, reaching number one on the pop charts in 12 countries, selling over five million copies, and firmly establishing Rogers' post-First Edition career. On the strength of "Lucille", the album Kenny Rogers reached #1 in the Billboard Country Album Chart. More success was to follow, including the multi-million selling album The Gambler and another international Number 1 single, "Coward of the County", taken from the equally successful album, Kenny. In 1980, the Rogers/Butler partnership came to an end, though they would occasionally reunite: in 1987 on the album I Prefer The Moonlight and again in 1993 on the album If Only My Heart Had A Voice.

In the late 1970s Kenny teamed up with close friend and country singer Dottie West for a series of albums and duets. Together the duo had three hit albums, selling out stadiums and arenas while on tour. Their hits together "Every Time Two Fools Collide", "Anyone Who Isn't Me Tonight" and "What Are We Doin' in Love" became Country standards. Of West, Kenny stated in a 1995 TNN interview "She, more than anybody else I ever worked with sang with such emotion that you actually believed what she sang." Rogers was with West when she died after sustaining injuries in a 1991 car accident. In 1995 he starred opposite Michele Lee in the CBS biopic Big Dreams and Broken Hearts: The Dottie West Story.

In 1980 his duet with Kim Carnes "Don't Fall in Love with a Dreamer" became a major hit. Later in 1980 came his partnership with Lionel Richie who wrote and produced Rogers' #1 hit "Lady". Richie went on to write and produce Rogers' 1981 album Share Your Love, a chart topper and commercial favorite featuring hits such as "I Don't Need You" (Pop #3), "Through the Years" (Pop #13), and "Share Your Love with Me" (Pop #14). In 1982, Rogers released the album Love Will Turn You Around. The title track reached #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the country and AC charts. Shortly after he started working with producer David Foster in 1983 recording the smash Bob Seger cover "We've Got Tonight", a duet with Sheena Easton.

He went on to work with the Bee Gees to record and produce his 1983 hit album Eyes That See in the Dark, featuring the title track and yet another #1 hit "Islands in the Stream," a duet with Dolly Parton. The Bee Gees had originally written the song for Diana Ross. The partnership with Bee Gees only lasted one album, which was not a surprise considering that Rogers' original intentions were to work with Barry Gibb in only one song but Barry insisted on them doing the entire album.

"Islands in the Stream", the first single to be released from Eyes That See in the Dark in the United States, quickly went to #1 in the Billboard Hot 100. It was the last country single to reach #1 on that chart until "Amazed" by Lonestar did so in 2000. However, RCA insisted on releasing the title track as the first UK single, and the song stalled at a disappointing #61 there, although it did stay in the top 100 for several weeks (when it was eventually released in the US, it was more successful, charting high on the Adult Contemporary chart and making the country top 30). "Islands in the Stream" was issued as a follow up single in Britain and sold well, making #7. The album itself reached #1 on the country charts on both sides of the Atlantic and enjoyed multi-million sales. "Buried Treasure," "This Woman" and "Evening Star"/"Midsummer Nights" were also all successful singles from the album.

Shortly afterwards came the album What About Me?, a hit whose title track, a trio performance featuring Rogers, James Ingram and Kim Carnes, was also a hit. While it didn't go very high on the country charts, the single "Crazy" (not to be confused with the Willie Nelson-penned Patsy Cline hit) topped the country charts. David Foster was to work again with Kenny Rogers in his 1985 album The Heart of the Matter, although this time Foster was playing backing music rather than producing, a role given to George Martin. This album was another success, going to #1, with the title track making to the top ten category in the singles charts.

The next few years saw Kenny scoring several top country hits on a regular basis, including "Twenty Years Ago," "Morning Desire," "Tomb of the Unknown Love," among others. On Rogers was one of the 45 artists who recorded the worldwide charity song "We Are the World" to support hunger victims in Africa. The following year he played at Giants Stadium.

On January 1987, Kenny Rogers co-hosted the American Music Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. By 1988 to 1990, Kenny Rogers had reached the pinnacle of his career and new artists like Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson were emerging at a rapid clip. During that time, he released some albums but, while he still made the top 20, he was no longer the chart topper he had been previously.

Worldwide success

His success is worldwide. He has played many well-attended concerts in Europe and the Far East, where he has charted numerous singles and albums from the 1970s through to the present day. New Zealand was a big stronghold during his First Edition days. Rogers 1985 greatest-hits package, The Kenny Rogers Story, reached #1 on the UK country chart and four years later (in 1989), was still at #2. He also charted internationally during that time with a series of studio albums.

In 1983, Rogers signed to RCA for a record breaking US$20 million advance. Although, following the success of his label debut, the Bee Gees produced Eyes That See in the Dark album, Rogers wasn't doing as well as in previous years. Nonetheless, he was still among the world's top stars. Between 1983 and 1990 alone he charted no less than 23 top 40 singles and 10 top 40 albums.

Although in the 1990s with the emergence of Garth Brooks, it was noted that this new talent was selling records like no one else had ever in country music, Rogers was nonetheless a dominant force in mainstream music and at his height, was charting singles (and albums) which were racing up the top 40 on the pop charts around the world, songs like "Lucille", "Coward of the County", "The Gambler" and "Lady" became favorites and have remained such, making Rogers one of the most popular entertainers on the touring circuit.

Success in the 1990s

In the 1990s Rogers continued to chart with singles such as "Crazy In Love", "If You Want To Find Love" and "The Greatest". From 1991 to 1994, Rogers hosted The Real West on A&E, and on The History Channel since 1995 (Reruns only on The History Channel.). He also visited Miller's during this time period. From 1992 to 1995 Rogers co-owned and headlined Branson, Missouri?s 4,000 seat Grand Palace Theatre. In 1994, Rogers released his "dream" album titled Timepiece on Atlantic Records. It consisted of 30's and 40's jazz standards; it was the type of music he performed in his early days with The Bobby Doyle Three in Houston. In 1996 he released an album Vote For Love where the public requested their favorite love songs and Kenny performed the songs (several of his own hits were in there). The album was the first for the TV shopping channel QVC's record label, onQ Music. The album, sold exclusively by QVC, was a huge success and was later issued in stores under a variety of different titles. It reached #1 in the UK country charts under the title Love Songs (a title also used for various compilations) and also crossed over into the mainstream charts.

In 1999 Rogers scored with the single "The Greatest". A song about life from a child's point of view (looked at through a baseball game). The song reached the top 40 of Billboard's Country singles chart and was a Country Music Television Number One video. It was on the Rogers' album "She Rides Wild Horses" the following year (itself a top 10 success). In 1999, Rogers also produced a song specifically for the ABC show "Home Improvement" (Starring Tim Allen and Patricia Richardson). The song was produced for the series finale. It's called "We've Got It All". The series finale of Home Improvement is called "The Long And Winding Road". It is three parts. The song is at the end of the second part. The song is not on any album. There was a cd made for it from the show, which sells for a high sum at auction.

Beyond the 1990s
Kenny Rogers

In the 21st century, Rogers was back at #1 for the first time in more than a decade with the 2000 single "Buy Me a Rose", making him, at 61, the oldest artist in the history of country music to reach the chart summit. In doing so, he broke a 26-year-old record held by Hank Snow (who, in April 1974, was 59 years and 11 months old when he scored with "Hello Love"). Rogers held the record until 2003, when then 70-year-old Willie Nelson became the oldest artist to have a No. 1 on the country charts with his duet with Toby Keith, "Beer For My Horses."

Rogers also released the critically acclaimed album Back to the Well.

Although Rogers didn't record new albums for a couple of years, he continued to have success in many countries with more greatest hits packages. In 2004 42 Ultimate Hits, which was the first hits collection to span his days with the First Edition to the present, reached Number 6 on the American country charts and went gold. It also featured two new songs, "My World Is Over" with Whitney Duncan and "We Are the Same". "My World Is Over" was released as a single and was a minor hit. In 2005 The Very Best of Kenny Rogers, a double album, sold well in Europe. It was the first new solo Kenny Rogers hits album to reach the United Kingdom for over a decade, despite many compilations there that were not true hits packages.

Rogers also signed with Capitol Nashville Records and had more success with the TV advertised release 21 Number Ones in January 2006. Although this CD did contain 21 chart-toppers as the title claims (recorded between 1976 and the present day), this was not a complete collection of Rogers' #1 singles, omitting such singles as "Crazy in Love" and "What About Me?"

Much of his success was with Capitol from 1976 to 1983 (called United Artists/Liberty at the time). It is very rare for an artist of Rogers' age to be signed to a major label. Capitol followed 21 Number Ones with Rogers' new studio album, Water And Bridges, in March 2006 on the Capitol Nashville Records label. The first single from the album was "I Can't Unlove You" which peaked at #17 on the country charts, after spending over 6 months on the hit list, more than 50 years after he formed his first group and 38 years after his first major hit as leader of The First Edition; the song remains in recurrent airplay on some radio stations today. "I Can't Unlove You" was followed up with the second single from the album, "The Last Ten Years (Superman)," in September 2006. The third single, "Calling Me," which features Don Henley, became popular in early 2007, and was nominated for a Grammy Award at the 2007 Grammy Awards. Also in 2007, the 1977 "Kenny Rogers" album was re-issued as a double play CD, also featuring the 1979 "Kenny" album and this once again put Kenny's name into the sales charts worldwide. The following year, another compilation album ("A Love Song Collection") also charted. He currently lives in Atlanta.

In 2003, Kenny Rogers made a guest appearance in two episodes of Reno 911 as himself.

To date Rogers has recorded 65 albums, won practically every award there is to win, and sold over 120 million records.

On August 26, 2008, Rogers released "50 Years" exclusively at Cracker Barrel stores. The album includes some of Rogers' greatest hits, plus 3 new songs. As an entrepreneur, he collaborated with former Kentucky Fried Chicken CEO John Y. Brown, Jr. in 1991 to start up the restaurant chain Kenny Rogers Roasters. The carpenters were a singing duo of the late '60's through the '80's, consisting of Karen Carpenter and her brother Richard. She did most of the vocals, and he did most of the arranging and instruments.

They had a lot of hit songs, many by composers Paul Williams or Burt Bacharach. Their songs were mostly love songs, fun pop tunes. Karen had a wonderfully rich, low voice that many of us grew up listening to and singing along with. Unfortunately, fame brought some personal problems, such as Richard's drug problem and Karen's eating disorder.

Sadly, she passed away during the '80's of anorexia, which she had been fighting for years. Boney M Biography

The Euro-Disco group Boney M was a European phenomenon during the '70s. After German record producer Frank Farian (* 18.7.1941 as Franz Reuther) recorded the single 'Baby Do You Wanna Bump?' in 1974/75 (which was successful in Holland and Belgium), he created Boney M to support the song, bringing in four West Indian vocalists who had been working as session singers in Germany -- Marcia Barrett, Liz Mitchell, Maizie Williams and Bobby Farrell.

Now let's take a look how this whole Boney M story started:

December 1974: Frank Farian 6 Weeks in Europa-Sound Studio in Offenbach Bieber. Recording: "Baby Do You Wanna Bump" under pseudonym "Boney M" (Boney: Hero of an Australian TV-Series). At first only Discotheque-Success, weekly sales about 500 Records.

End of 1975: Dutch TV and Discos wanted Live-Appearances of Boney M. Farian and the Artist-Agent Katja Wolf find 4 colored girls and 1 man. Aboriginal Boney M: Maizie Williams, Sheila Bonnick, a girl named Nathalie and the african Mike. This aboriginal line-up did only Dance- and Pressappearances. Later Claudja Barry joined the group, but she was replaced by Liz Mitchell. Line-Up now: Marcia Barrett, Liz Mitchell, Maizie Williams and Bobby Farrell.

When "Baby Do You Wanna Bump" was released in 1975, it seemed nobody thought the tracks of this Formation's success would run into the 90's. Without a doubt it was the voice of Liz Mitchell that carried most of the songs. Liz was born on Jamaica and came to Germany in the end of the 60's. Here she played in 1969 in the Berlin Version of "Hair". In the beginning of the 70's she joined the Les Humphies Singers from the start (1970-73), and with Malcolm Magaron, another member of that group, she did Malcolm Locks. From her friend Marcia Barrett, who lived in Hamburg, came the suggestion to join together a Group that was founded by Frank Farian - Boney M. The producer Frank Farian later said that all members of the group would be replacable without hurting the Group - but not Liz.

Boney M's first appearance in Germany was a performance of the song "Daddy Cool" in the then important and famous TV-Show "Musikladen" in 1976. After that TV-Show appearance the sales of the single were about 100.000 singles each week! From then on the album (Take The Heat Off Me) did well, too. In July 1976 with "Daddy Cool" came the first Number 1 for Boney M in Germany and a Top-10-Hit in December 1976 in the UK. The same year in Germany the follow-up to Daddy Cool was a remake of Bobby Hebb's "Sunny", which hit Number One in December 1976, in the UK it hit Number one in March 1977.

The Original Group Lineup was Marcia Barret (* 14.10.1945, St. Catherines, Jamaica), Liz Mitchell (* 12.7.1952, Clarendon, Jamaica), Maizie Williams (* 25.3.1951, Monserrat, West Indies) and Bobby Farrell (*6.10.1949, Aruba, West Indies). In 1982 Bobby Farrell was replaced by Reggie Tsiboe (* 1950). But Bobby rejoined the group in 1984 on Eye Dance.

In May 1977, "Ma Baker" just missed the U.K. number one spot, and "Belfast" hit the Top Ten in October. In 1978, Boney M was at the height of its popularity with "Rivers of Babylon"/"Brown Girl in the Ring", which became the second-biggest selling single in U.K. chart history. "Rivers of Babylon" also was Boney M's only U.S. Top 40 hit. Boney M's album "Nightflight To Venus" also topped the U.K. charts. In September 1978, "Rasputin" became another U.K. Top Ten hit, followed by the seasonal chart-topper "Mary's Boy Child"/"Oh My Lord", which became the fifth-biggest selling single in U.K. history. In March 1979, "Painter Man" hit the U.K. Top Ten, followed in April by "Hooray! Hooray! It's a Holi-Holiday". In September, the album "Oceans Of Fantasy" hit number one.

Making a balance-sheet after 10 Years, Frank Farian counted 18 Platin- and 15 Gold-LPs, more than 200 Gold- and Platin-Singles and about 150 Million sold Units all over the world. Whose voices could be heared besides that of Liz will be remaining Farian's little secret. By the end of the 80's Farian put out a new edition of Boney M onto the Market. Besides Liz there now stood and sang only decorative: Reggie Tsiboe, Patty Onyewenjo and Sharon Stevens. But not this new combination attrackted the audience, it was the old combination! Biodata Survivor

Survivor was formed in the cold Chicago winter of 1977. The original lineup consisted of Frankie Sullivan, Jim Peterik, Dave Bickler, Dennis Johnson, and Gary Smith. By the end of 1978, Survivor was signed to a record deal with Scotti Bros. Records. Under the patronage of John Kolodner, then head of A&R for Atlantic Records, Survivor went into the studio to cut their first album, "Survivor". This record, released in 1980 with the single "Somewhere in America", did moderately well and started to build a loyal base of fans.

After touring for 8 months, the band went back into the studio, this time with the addition of Marc Droubay (drums) and Stephen Ellis (bass). The result of those sessions, "Premonition," is considered by many fans to be their favorite Survivor record. The album was released in 1981 with the singles "Poor Mans Son" and "Summer Nights." This record improved on the first album’s success, although it was still not the big breakout the band was looking for - that was to come with the 1982 release of "Eye of the Tiger."

The title song for this record was expressly written for the opening scenes of Rocky Three which brought the band national attention. "Eye of the Tiger" spent seven weeks at the #1 spot on the U.S. charts. The song won a Grammy, Oscar nomination , and was voted "Best New Song" by the Peoples Choice Awards. The band toured extensively playing in sheds and stadiums all over the country for the next 8 months.

1983 found Survivor back in the studio at work on "Caught in the Game." Release of this title track continued their successful string of hit singles. It was at this time, however, that Dave Bickler decided to leave the band. He was replaced by Jim Jamison on lead vocals, leading to the release of "Vital Signs" in 1984 - the fifth Survivor album. It achieved multi-platinum status with the hit single "Can’t Hold Back", a song that reached the top ten pop charts and made #1 on the album rock charts. This was followed by "High on You," another top ten hit, and "The Search is Over" which reached #2 on the hot 100.

The next ten months found Survivor once again on tour, this time in the U.S. and the world. Despite a hectic schedule, the band was still able to take time out to record "Burning Heart," the title track for Rocky 4. The song went all the way to #2 on the hot 100 charts, propelling the sound track album to multi-platinum status. It was 1987 before Survivor had time to stop and make another record. "When Seconds Count" contained another top ten single, "Is This Love," which stayed at the #9 spot for almost a month.

In 1988 Survivor released its seventh album, "Too Hot to Sleep." Although not the huge commercial success of some of their other efforts, it is still considered by many critics and fans alike to be one of Survivor’s best. This album included the singles "Across the Miles" and "Didn’t Know It was Love".

In 1989 Survivor released its first greatest hits package. This led to the release in 1993 of a second and more complete greatest hits package which included some re-mixes of earlier material and two new cuts written especially for this CD. This also included the return of Dave Bickler on lead vocals, as by this time Jim Jamison had left the band to pursue a solo career. The singles "You Know Who You Are" and "Hungry Years" marked a return to the collaboration that first propelled Survivor to national attention. Since then, Survivor has been extensively touring and recording in the U.S. and abroad. Now the new millennium marks the return of Jimi Jamison on lead vocals. With production from Michael Masser, Kashif, Jermaine Jackson and Narada Michael Walden, Whitney Houston's self-titled 1985 debut album was released in February 1985. Rolling Stone Magazine praised the new talent, calling Whitney Houston "one of the most exciting new voices in years" while The New York Times called the album "an impressive, musically conservative showcase for an exceptional vocal talent." After the dance-funk single "Someone For Me" failed to chart in both the US and UK, the album initially sold modestly and failed to make an impact. The plan was to first appeal to a black audience, hence the release of the next single, the soulful ballad "You Give Good Love", which peaked at #3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 while going #1 on the R&B Charts. As a result, the album began to sell before topping the R&B Album chart while Whitney Houston continued promoting the album touring night clubs in the US.

With success on the R&B Charts, Davis wanted Whitney Houston to crossover to a broader audience. Whitney Houston began performing on popular night shows that usually weren't open to many black acts. The jazz-pop ballad "Saving All My Love for You" was released next and would become Whitney Houston's first #1 hit single in both the US and the UK. Whitney Houston was now an opening act for singer Jeffrey Osborne on his nationwide tour. At the time, MTV had received harsh criticism for not playing enough videos by African American artists while favoring rock acts. The next single, "How Will I Know", peaked at #1 and would introduce Whitney Houston to the MTV audience thanks to its video. This would make Whitney Houston one of the first African American female artists to receive heavy rotation on the network. By 1986, a year after its initial release, Whitney Houston topped the Billboard 200 album chart and stayed there for 14 consecutive weeks. The final single, "Greatest Love of All," became Whitney Houston's biggest hit at the time after peaking #1 and remaining there for three weeks. Whitney Houston had established a cross-over base and was now able to headline her own tour thus embarking on her Greatest Love Tour.

The album had become an international success, being certified 13x Platinum (diamond) in the United States alone.

At the 1986 Grammy Awards ceremony, Whitney Houston was nominated for three awards including Album of the Year. Rolling Stone felt it was her "best and most integrated album". while Entertainment Weekly, called Whitney Houston's shift towards an urban direction "superficial". The album peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 and went on to be certified four times platinum in America while selling ten million total worldwide. The first two singles, the new jack swing "I'm Your Baby Tonight" and the gospel-tinged "All The Man That I Need", each hit number one on both the Hot 100 and R&B singles charts.

The third and fourth singles, "Miracle"; and "My Name Is Not Susan" peaked at numbers nine and twenty, respectively. A fifth single, "I Belong to You", peaked in the Top 10 on the R&B charts, while yet a sixth single, the duet with Stevie Wonder entitled, "We Didn't Know", made the R&B Top 20.

Whitney Houston performed "The Star Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl XXV in January 1991. VH1 listed the performance as the 12th greatest moment that rocked TV. Whitney Houston's recording of the song was released as a commercial single, reaching the Top 20 on the US Hot 100 making her the only act to turn the national anthem into a pop hit.

Whitney Houston donated her share of the proceeds to the Red Cross. As a result, the singer was named to the Red Cross Board of Governors for her efforts. The soundtrack debuted at #1 and remained there for twenty non-consecutive weeks and became one of the fastest selling albums ever. At one point the soundtrack sold over a million copies in a week, becoming the first album to do so.

With the follow-up singles "I'm Every Woman", a Chaka Khan cover, and "I Have Nothing" both peaking in the top five, Whitney Houston became the first female artist to ever have three singles in the Top 20 simultaneously. The album was certified 17x platinum in the United States with worldwide sales of forty-two million. Whitney Houston won three Grammys for the album, including two of the Academy's highest honors, Album of the Year and Record of the Year. In addition, Whitney Houston won 8 American Music Awards, including the Award of Merit, and a BRIT award. Following the success of the project, Whitney Houston embarked on another expansive global tour in 1993 and 1994. Her concerts, movie, and recording grosses made her the third highest earning female entertainer of 1993-1994, just behind Oprah Winfrey and Barbra Streisand according to Forbes. In October 1994, Whitney Houston was invited to perform at a state dinner at the White House honoring newly elected South African president Nelson Mandela. At the end of her world tour, Whitney Houston performed three concerts in South Africa to honor President Mandela, playing to over 200,000 people. This would make the singer the first major musician to visit the newly unified and apartheid free nation following Mandela's winning election. The event was considered the nation's "biggest media event since the inauguration of Nelson Mandela"

In April 2008, the single "Touch My Body" became her 18th #1 single, pushing her ahead of Elvis Presley's 17 #1 singles. Now she is the only artist since The beatles to have as many number one singles and the only singer alive likely to succeed them.

Kylie Ann Minogue born 28 May 1968), is an Australian pop singer, songwriter, and actress. After beginning her career as a child actress on Australian television, she achieved recognition through her role in the television soap opera Neighbours, before commencing her career as a recording artist in 1987.

Her first single, ``Locomotion", spent seven weeks at number one on the Australian singles chart and became the highest selling single of the decade. ABBA was a Swedish pop music group formed in Stockholm in 1972, consisting of Anni-Fid ``Frida'' Lyngstad, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson, and Agnetha Faltskog. They became one of the most commercially successful acts in the history of popular music, topping the charts worldwide from 1972 to 1983.

ABBA sold over 375 million records worldwide,making them the fourth best-selling popular music artists in the history of recorded music. They still sell two to three million records a year. ABBA was the first pop group from a non-English-speaking country to enjoy consistent success in the charts of English-speaking countries, including the UK, the US, Canada, Ireland, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

As well as reaching the top of the charts in different countries like Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Peru among others, the band also released a compilation of their hit songs translated into Spanish.

During the band's existence, Fältskog and Ulvaeus were a married couple, as were Lyngstad and Andersson - although both couples later divorced. At the height of their popularity, both relationships began suffering strain that led ultimately to the collapse of first the Ulvaeus-Fältskog marriage (in 1979) and then of the Andersson-Lyngstad marriage in 1981. In the late 1970s and early 1980s these relationship changes began manifesting in the group's music, as they produced more introspective lyrics with different compositions.

After ABBA split, Andersson and Ulvaeus achieved success writing music for the stage while Lyngstad and Fältskog pursued individual solo careers with varying success. ABBA's music remained steadily popular until several films, notably Muriel's Wedding and The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, revived interest in the group, spawning several tribute bands. In 1999, ABBA's music was adapted into the successful musical Mamma Mia ! that toured worldwide and had a movie version released in 2008, becoming the highest grossing film in the UK at the time. The group was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on 15 March 2010.
