David May was bought by United back in 1994, just a year before Blackburn won the title. He was a centre-back and Fergie played him every now and again as a useful squad player. In 96 he played more often, over 40 games.

In ‘99, with United going for the treble they needed to call on all squad members. Stam was rested for the European final so May played in the FA Cup final.

He is most fondly remembered by United fans for his celebrations at the Nou Camp immediately after winning the Champions League. For some reason, he seems to appear in nearly every single team photo taken!

Jaap Stam was an amazing centre back who Fergie bought from PSV back in 1998. He was pivotal in the success of the team when they won the treble in ‘99. He was the best centre back in the world and many United fans still say that he was our best ever centre back.

Then he published his autobiography and told how Fergie tapped him up to get him. Immediately he was sold to Lazio and Fergie did not even give him a reason.

He continued his playing career in Italy and then returned to The Netherlands. Apparently he is now a South American scout for United!

Darren Fletcher Videos

Darren Fletcher has had a controversial time among hardcore Man United fans. Many of them see him as “Fergie’s son” due to his heritage and Ferguson’s knack of playing Fletcher regularly, even in the big games, despite some being of the opinion that he is simply not good enough. This was particularly noted early in his career.

Lately however, despite not having apparent outstanding talent, his efforts and talents are appreciated much more. He is a regular for Scotland and has captained the team on several occasions.

Edwin van der Sar was signed from Fulham where he had been a solid goalie for a few good years. But was he too old? Not by the looks of it.

United have struggled since Schmeichel retired in 1999 and have gone through a load of goalies in the years after. But van der Sar made an immediate impact and for the most part has been a solid goalie who singlehandedly has saved United from losing in some games too, as all good goalies can.

Some people do not know that he actually has a Champions League winners medal already from 1995 and he was also in the ‘96 final but lost the penalty shootout. No doubt you know that his save of Anelka’s shot in 2008 helped Manchester United to win the Champions League.

Patrice Evra Videos

Patrice Evra was signed from Monaco in 2006 as cover for left back, given that Gabriel Heinze was suffering badly with injuries. However, he went on to claim the position as his own and offers more pace and ball skills going forward than Heinze did (although Heinze was a solid defender no doubt).

He has honed his skills well over the last couple of years I think. He used to lose the ball more often but now he skillfully gets past defenders, puts in good crosses, links up well with whoever is playing on the left wing and tracks back to cover.

Nani has made a huge impact since coming to Old Trafford. For ages now, we have needed decent competition for Giggs who seems to be amazing one day and nowhere the next.

He’s not exactly getting any younger either.

And what a great alternative we have in Nani. Some great pace and skill on the ball - this United team is finally looking “continental” which is just what we need to win the Champions League again, fingers crossed it could be this year…

Classic Match - ‘99 Man Utd vs Juventus

This was an incredible match I remember it fondly. In fact, like often, the semi was better than the final - just like in the FA Cup of that year too.

Pippo Inzaghi scored two inside just a few minutes. It looked like it was well and truly over, but United have a “never say die” attitude and they came back thanks to Keano.

Despite getting a yellow that would rule him out of the final, instead of crying buckets of tears like Gaza, he threw caution to the wind and played one of the finest matches of his life. Even Fergie described him in his autobiography:

“It was the most emphatic display of selflessness I have seen on a football field. Pounding over every blade of grass, competing if he would rather die of exhaustion than lose, he inspired all around him. I felt it was an honour to be associated with such a player.”

Classic Match - ‘07 Man Utd vs AS Roma

OK I know this may be premature to call it a “classic”, seeing as it happened less than one year ago, but this was a great United match.

Before the match, AS Roma were expected to give United a stern test, even though they were playing away from home at Old Trafford. In the 1st leg in Italy, their hoolies and local police had run riot and given United hell.

What happened, noone could have predicted. United totally ripped AS Roma and sent the Italians home packing!

During the amazing treble run in ‘99 came the incredible comeback by United.

First, the talisman Keano was sent off, secondly, Schikes saved a penalty and third….that goal! Need I say more!

Classic Match - ‘02 Man Utd vs Aston Villa

When United played Aston Villa in the 3rd round of the FA Cup in 2002, it was thought that, despite being an all Premiership tie, United should win on the night.

Going down a single goal in the second half is bad enough but United would aim to recover from this. When an own goal by Phil Neville went in soon after in the 54th minute, the impact of two sudden goals at that stage of the game would probably see most teams buckle.

But Manchester United came back and kept trying - a 77th minute goal by Ole Solskjaer gave United hope or a draw perhaps? Only three minutes later, United scored with a sublime chest by van Nistelrooy comverted into a thundering header! The place went mad.

Only two minutes later in the 80th minute, Ruud found himself one on one with our old keeper Schmikes and took it around him with ease to score the third.

What happened next every fan could predict and there was a mini pitch invasion as travelling United fans could not suppress their emotions and took to the pitch engulfing van Nistelrooy, maybe a hundred of them!

What a classic United match!
