Experiments with the Movie Musical: Stacie Sells and Friends

This Friday, May 21st, from 8-10 pm I will be presenting new video works in an installation that takes as its form a history of, and personal experience with, the movie musical. My work celebrates and complicates the song and dance routines of movie musicals as she inserts herself as an unlikely partner to Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Liza Minelli....

Some come join me and my friends at 13 East Tulane (right next to Cup O Joes in Clintonville) and enjoy Champagne, music, and fun!

New Work by ME, Stacie Sells!

It's been a while since I've posted a new video and I'm feeling revitalized by this lovely spring weather to start making new videos.

This is a video created for my first video class and we had to do a simple art act every day for 28 days.

Mine was documenting the type of cereal I ate, the time, and the place. I tried being consistant.

Along with this piece I did a performance while the video played. While it was playing I read the type of cereal I had everyday and the weather outside to show the differation in everyday life and how it's not always the same.

this video was an interview I did with my Japanese grandmother asking her questions on how she felt coming to America the first time and how she felt in comparison to Japan and some of the barriers and downfalls it was to be a foreigner in a land where no one spoke your language and your customs were different then theirs.

In life there are paths that we choose to take and explore. Some we take so often it becomes routine and normal that we do not even realize where we are or where we are going.

This video work questions these paths, in particular, the path of social norms of gender in society and how we are lead by our culture to abide by those norms.

The sidewalk is the straightened, heteronormatvie, path we think is "normal" to take but as the video advances you are presented with forms/lines on the sidewalk that are disjointed and become vaginal. This image, along with the sound, is presented to you to question this straightened, "normal" path and to, in turn, question the word "normal" itself. The layering presented express feminist theory that we are all equal and one in the same whether we realize it or not.

It's this realization of the inequalities that are presented to us on a daily basis that becomes prevalent in this work and to recognize that it's alright to break away from the repetitive nature of society and be different because, like the layers, we are equal and one.
