Some of you may remember the groovy little origami Star Wars vehicles made out of US dollar bills.

Well, the internet has gone one better (it usually does). We've located a Frenchman who makes Star Wars vehicles out of rail tickets.

It's not origami this time, but does use delicate folding, cutting, and some incredible dexterity.

The results are delightful.

Who is the man behind this mission? A chap by the name of Hubert de Lartigue - he's an artist who works using photo-realistic airbrushing, and has already made a name for himself doing fun cheesecake style pin-ups, and also by wandering into the worlds of fantasy and Sci Fi. If you're a gamer, you may recognise his covers on RuneQuest, Land of Ninja and Stormbringer.

What's really cool about his foray into the world of mini-recycled sculpture is that he has gone to the effort to create tutorials - so you can do it at home.

Free Air Conditioner

We’ve just installed a split system air conditioner, so we’ve got no need for our small portable air conditioning unit.

So, any one who wants it, you can have it (as long as you pick it up! (from Kingswood))

It’s a Delonghi portable air conditioning unit. (950W) It needs the exhaust to go out of a window (fitting/hose are supplied).

We’ve had the unit for almost 8 years. It’s great for a bedroom or small living area. It’s done really well. It cost about $1200.

The unit occasionally needs some encouragement to work, the pump gets clogged up, but we can show you how to clear it.

I’d say it’s got another 2 or 3 years life in it.

If no one wants it, it will be thrown away at a council pick up!

Firefly Life Lessons

Someone decided to list the life lessons that he learned from Firefly, which is basically some rehashes of the show’s memorable quotes. Killin’ em right back is advice you can take to the bank.

I’m one of the many people that didn’t know about Firefly until it was cancelled. In fact, I saw Serenity before I even heard of Firefly…or Joss Whedon (I didn’t watch Buffy, give me a break.) After watching the first season, I held myself partly accountable for its demise. Forget that Fox showed the 2nd episode first, confusing people as to what the show was about. And forget that Fox juggled the show’s scheduled more than a street performer trying to earn food money. How can the audience commit if the show can’t commit to a time slot?

I, like millions of other people, didn’t watch Firefly on the sporadic nights that Fox decided to air it. It’s the same thing that killed Conan.

Personal website are usually a train wreck. With the death of Geocities, the internet has become a better place, for sure, but generally speaking personal website are poorly programmed places were people put pictures of their cat and such. This is not one of those sites. Michael Vincent has created a personal site that emulates Windows 3.1 in your browser.

Yep, you read that right. Win3.1 in a browser. Everything that was there on that desktop, including Minesweeper. Of course, it’s also a whole lot more stable then the original, and some of the icons take you into Michael’s personal website. Thankfully, you can’t run the old version of I.E. on the site, but you can shut down windows.

Might as well load up on stories from the New York Times as it has announced plans to “meter” usage and limit free online access to its content (at least for now – it’s not the first time the Times has tried charging for some content). If this story doesn’t tell you to change your passwords now, nothing will:

Back at the dawn of the Web, the most popular account password was “12345.” Today, it’s one digit longer but hardly safer: “123456.”

Despite all the reports of Internet security breaches over the years, including the recent attacks on Google’s e-mail service, many people have reacted to the break-ins with a shrug.

According to a new analysis, one out of five Web users still decides to leave the digital equivalent of a key under the doormat: they choose a simple, easily guessed password like “abc123,” “iloveyou” or even “password” to protect their data.

“I guess it’s just a genetic flaw in humans,” said Amichai Shulman, the chief technology officer at Imperva, which makes software for blocking hackers. “We’ve been following the same patterns since the 1990s.”

Mr. Shulman and his company examined a list of 32 million passwords that an unknown hacker stole last month from RockYou, a company that makes software for users of social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace. The list was briefly posted on the Web, and hackers and security researchers downloaded it. (RockYou, which had already been widely criticized for lax privacy practices, has advised its customers to change their passwords, as the hacker gained information about their e-mail accounts as well.)

The trove provided an unusually detailed window into computer users’ password habits. Typically, only government agencies like the F.B.I. or the National Security Agency have had access to such a large password list…
