Along with rapid growth in the private-jet segment of air travel, aircraft interior design is a booming business.

While some private jet owners hire interior designers, the majority use the services of aircraft completion companies, which take bare-bones plans and customize them to the new owner’s needs. We asked Meghan Welch, an interior designer at Moline, Ill.–based Elliott Aviation, about how she works with clients.

Q. What are the interior design issues particular to aircraft?

Most aircraft owners are concerned with durability and resale, so the majority of aircraft interiors are designed with neutral tones and finishes to meet these requirements. However, with each interior, we learn the functionality and mission of the [customer’s] aviation needs and customize the interior refurbishment to maximize the outcome.

Q. Have you had any unusual design requests?

We completed an interior design for the government of Venezuela. They requested that the map of their country be etched in gold finish in the tabletop inserts. Additionally, we completed embroideries of the country’s seal in the leather of each cabin seatback and coordinated the remainder of the interior with that [element].

Q. Are there FAA or other government entity standards or requirements in private aircraft interiors?

Only specific materials can be used for aircraft interiors. For example, all materials are required to have an 8110-3, which means they need to pass FAA burn requirements. We also do a treatment and testing of certain materials to ensure all standards are met.

Q. Is there a trend for more private aircraft buyers to bring in their own interior designers?

No. Since we have the tools, capabilities and experience to do so, we typically work with the customer on their interior design. Here at Elliott Aviation, the design services are provided with the interior refurbishment. We offer a computer software program called EnVision that allows us to turn their ideas into reality. This 2-D and 3-D modeling software allows the customer to preview colors, textures, patterns and materials from our database, [which contains] hundreds of samples. The final stage of this software is a photorealistic 3-D rendering [that shows] the customer a true color visualization of how the new interior environment will look and feel. This rendering, along with the color board of materials, is a complete package for their interior design.

Kuliah beliau yang akan berkisar pada tajuk “Gelombang Fitnah” dijadual untuk berlangsung di Institut Al-Qayyim, Mengkuang, Bukit Mertajam.

Maklumat blog Asri pagi ini juga menyebut beliau akan menjawab tuduhan pegawai Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (Jakim) tentang sijil palsu.

Penolong Pengarah Institut Latihan Islam Malaysia (ILIM), Zamihan Mat Zain Al-Ghari mendedahkan Asri telah memalsukan kelayakannya dalam bidang syariah di peringkat ijazah Sarjana Muda (Kepujian) Bahasa Arab/Syariah dari Universiti Jordan.

Jelas Zamihan, berdasarkan pemeriksaannya, bidang pengkhususan Asri hanya melibatkan Bahasa Arab dan Sastera.

“Universiti Jordan tidak menawarkan dua pengkhususan dalam satu ijazah. Sekiranya seseorang itu berkelulusan syariah, minor pengajian biasanya melibatkan bidang berkaitan seperti ‘fiqh wa usul’.

“Pengajian Bahasa Arab dibenarkan untuk mengambil minor syariah tetapi hanya sebagai subjek elektif.

“Sekiranya ia diambil sebagai elektif, maka ia tidak dikira sebagai pelajar syariah,” katanya kepada Utusan Malaysia.

Kelmarin, Jabatan Agama Islam Selangor (JAIS) menahan Asri selepas beliau menyampaikan kuliah di sebuah kediaman di Taman Sri Ukay, Hulu Klang.

Penahanan beliau mencetuskan persoalan di kalangan pelbagai pihak termasuk Perdana Menteri, Datuk Seri Mohd. Najib Tun Razak.

Beliau dituduh atas kesalahan mengajar agama tanpa tauliah oleh pihak JAIS dan ditahan pada pukul 9 malam oleh sekumpulan anggota JAIS di sebuah banglo milik seorang ahli perniagaan di Taman Sri Ukay, Hulu Klang ketika memberikan ceramah kepada lebih 300 pengikut.
Selain tuduhan kesalahan mengajar agama tanpa tauliah, antara isu lain yang berbangkit ekoran penahanan itu adalah isu penyebaran ajaran Wahabi.
Dr Asri kononnya dituduh membawa ajaran Wahabi oleh beberapa pertubuhan Islam hinggakan perkara ini terkandung di dalam salah satu bahagian dalam Memorandum Fitnah yang diusulkan oleh Persatuan Peguam Syarie Malaysia kepada Agung.
Namun, ketika diajukan perkara ini, Dr Asri sendiri berasa hairan dan ingin bertanya kepada mereka-mereka yang membuat tuduhan yang dia Wahabi.... apa itu Wahabi?
"Saya bukan Wahabi dan saya tak tahu apa itu Wahabi. Tolong bagi saya definisi Wahabi. Kalau orang tak baca doa qunut itu, JAIS katakan Wahabi, kenapa tak larang masjid-masjid India kerana setahu saya mereka tak baca doa qunut," katanya.
Dr Asri juga mencabar pihak tertentu yang mendakwa beliau menyebarkan fahaman Wahabi di negara ini tampil mengemukakan bukti kukuh.
"Jika tidak tahu, jangan membuat tafsiran melulu," kata tokoh agama yang disegani ini.
Jelasnya lagi, hanya kerana seseorang itu tak baca doa qunut, orang itu terus dicap Wahabi.
"Majoriti dari Mazhab-mazhab tak baca doa qunut, adakah mereka juga Wahabi.
"Dan saya nak tanya, sekiranya seseorang itu Wahabi, adakah itu membolehkan pihak JAIS dan polis membuat serbuan begitu rupa. Kenapa tak tangkap orang yang tak sembahyang, itupun agama tak suruh berbuat demikian," katanya sambil melahirkan rasa kemusykilannya tentang tindakan JAIS yang menahannya Ahad malam.
"Lagipun bila masa yang orang JAIS ikut saya sembahyang subuh sampai tahu saya tak baca doa qunut. Saya betul-betul hairan...," kata Dr Asri.
Ditanya bagaimana perasaannya sekarang, hingga isu penahanannya mendapat liputan nasional dan meluas, Dr Asri berkata, dia tidak sangka fitnah yang datang akan menjadi seteruk ini.
"Memanglah saya tahu....kalau takut dilambung ombak, jangan berumah di tepi pantai tapi saya tak dapat bayangkan orang-orang yang melakukan ini adalah orang-orang agama dan duduk di institusi negara.
"Dan saya melihat sendiri sikap-sikap seperti ini di depan mata," kata Dr Asri.
Dalam satu sidang media semalam, pengarah Jabatan Agama Islam Selangor (JAIS), Datuk Mohammed Khusrin Munawi ada menyatakan jabatan itu akan mengambil tindakan mendakwa Dr Asri setelah selesai menjalankan siasatan berhubung kesalahan mengajar agama tanpa tauliah.
Dan dakwaan ke atas Dr Asri kemungkinan besar akan dilakukan pada Isnin depan.
"Itu media yang tulis. Saya belum diberitahu apa-apa pun," kata tokoh agama yang menulis di dalam kolum di akhbar Mingguan Malaysia.
Menurut Khusrin, Dr Asri akan didakwa di bawah Enakmen Pentadbiran Agama Islam Negeri Selangor 2003, Seksyen 119 (1) yang menyebut mana-mana orang yang mengajar agama Islam atau perkara-perkara tentang agama Islam di negeri itu perlu mendapatkan tauliah daripada JAIS.
Sesiapa yang didapati gagal mendapatkan tauliah daripada JAIS jika disabitkan kesalahan boleh didenda tidak melebihi RM3,000 atau dipenjarakan selama tempoh tidak melebihi dua tahun atau kedua-duanya sekali.
Insiden penahanan malam kelmarin tidak sedikitpun melunturkan semangat juang Dr Asri untuk menegakkan syiar Islam.
"Jika mana-mana pandangan, pendapat atau ilmu saya tidak sama dengan pendapat serta kehendak sesetengah pihak, janganlah saya dengan sewenang-wenangnya dituduh menyesatkan.
"Dan lagi, jangan guna akta dan kuasa yang ada untuk menghalang masyarakat untuk mendapatkan ilmu yang baik," kata Dr Asri.mstar

Presented as part of the 38th annual Los Angeles Architectural Awards, the inaugural Los Angeles Green Building Award has gone to Belzberg Architects. Hagy Belzberg’s firm won the honors for the design of a permanent home for the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust, scheduled to open in 2010 in Pan Pacific Park. The 15,000-square-foot, two-level facility, all of it underground, will be constructed entirely of formed concrete, with the insulating green roof doubling as a public park. LEED Silver certification is the goal.
Also honored by the Los Angeles Building Council were Ankrom Moisan Associated Architects, which claimed the Green Building Award for built structures for the Luma condominium in the South Park neighborhood of downtown Los Angeles, and HKS, recognized for unbuilt structures for the W Hollywood. Rome Wasn't Built in a Day Fact

During the tumultuous summer of 1968, while walking across his farm near Palencia, Spain, agronomist Javier Cortes stumbled on a stone block. A few yards away, a shiny bronze object caught his eye. And these turned out to be the tip of the iceberg. His discovery prompted an archaeological dig that uncovered the remains of a palatial Roman villa dating from the fourth century AD. La Olmeda, as the villa is called, is one of the largest and best-preserved relics of Roman architecture on the Iberian peninsula, with thousands of square feet of excavated mosaic floors including an especially elaborate one from The Odyssey that depicts the mythological arrival of Ulysses on the island of Skyros. Scientists deduced that a fire is likely to have destroyed the rest of the structure. Cortes was so moved by his discovery that he became an archaeologist, funding the initial 12-year excavation and the construction of the first protective structures over the dig, which opened to the public in 1984. Over the years, archae-ologists also unearthed a freestanding bathhouse and three necropolises near the main villa. Spain’s ministry of culture designated the entire zone a cultural landmark in 1996.
With the original enclosure woefully outdated and the precarious roofs declared asbestos-filled, the cultural ministry launched a competition for a permanent shelter with proper visitor amenities. The husband-wife firm Paredes Pedrosa Arquitectos won the commission, which clocked in at the equivalent of $9 million, in 2004. La Olmeda closed to the public in 2005 and recently reopened to great acclaim, although the official opening ceremony, hosted by Queen Sofía, is November 4.
The redesign “confronts antiquities with modernity,” Angela García de Paredes says. She and her husband placed new functions along two contiguous sides of the building. The bookshop and the café are next to each other in front; around the corner are the auditorium and a gallery for visitors as well as a meeting room and a restoration workshop for administrators and archaeologists. Aside from these perpendicular runs of enclosed spaces, however, the 66,000-square-foot interior is vast and shedlike.
One key concern was to bring in natural illumination without creating harsh shadows on the archaeological site or letting UV rays damage the artifacts, and the architects dealt with the issue by creating a two-layered enclosure. The inner one has an 8-foot-tall base of board-formed white concrete capped by 12-foot-tall panels of translucent polycarbonate. To further temper the daylight streaming through them, the firm installed an outer skin of folded, perforated Cor-Ten steel. The cutouts grow longer the higher up you look on the facade, like leaves thinning at the tops of trees. Indeed, the architects drew inspiration from the surrounding poplar groves and windbreaks, especially their autumn color—although the weathered steel was chosen as much for ease of maintenance.
Inside, things open up dramatically. The aluminum roof’s four sweeping vaults, surfaced by a trellislike grid of white-painted steel, are supported by hefty steel beams to create an almost- column-free interior. Four mighty steel pillars are the only visible vertical supports. Shouldering the rest of the load are 110 columns hidden in the exterior walls.

Ceiling vaults top out at 40 feet above the unearthed foundations, which neatly outline the villa’s classical floor plan: rooms and corridors wrapped around an impluvium, or open-air atrium. (La Olmeda’s is an impressively scaled 75 feet square.) Around the atrium and throughout the site, lengths of stainless-steel mesh suggest long-vanished walls. “They indicate to the visitor the third dimension of the rooms,” Ignacio García Pedrosa says. The site’s only vertical structure, a brick arcade, is a 1970’s reconstruction except for one original arch.
The architects initially considered leaving the atrium as an open-air garden with a fountain at the center, as would have been the case during the days of Theodosius the Great, but the archaeologists advised against it, citing the effects on the ancient mosaics of everything from dust to guano and sprouting seeds. Instead, the firm laid artificial turf on a platform around the atrium’s perimeter. Boardwalks with glass balustrades surround the atrium, giving visitors a glimpse of multilevel excavations and mosaics softly lit by incandescent lamps.
“The new architecture does not touch the ancient,” Paredes notes. “They are completely independent, but there is still a dialogue between them.”

The Elton John / Billy Joel Face 2 Face concerts originally scheduled for Wednesday, November 4, Saturday November 7 and Tuesday, November 10 have been postponed.
Promoter Live Nation, The KeyArena and The Rose Garden were informed by management that Elton has been advised by his doctor to postpone these performances due to a serious case of e-coli bacterial infection and influenza.
Organizers of the events are working to establish new dates. All patrons who have purchased tickets for the Face 2 Face concerts on Wednesday, November 4 and Saturday, November 7 at the Key Arena, Seattle and on Tuesday, November 10 at Rose Garden Arena, Portland are being asked to hold on to their tickets until more information is available regarding the proposed rescheduled engagement.

Lisa Anne Haapaniemi (born May 26, 1956) is an American actress and dancer and was the wife of actor, singer and dancer Patrick Swayze from 1975 until his death in 2009.
Lisa Niemi was born in Houston, Texas to Finnish Americans Edmond Melvin Haapaniemi (October 11, 1914 - February 1984)^[1] and Edna Karin Hyttinen. In 1971, she began attending a Houston area ballet school, the Houston Ballet Dance Company, where she met the owner/director's son, Patrick Swayze, to whom she was married from 1975^[2]^[3] until his death from pancreatic cancer, on September 14, 2009. Soon after their marriage, the couple moved to New York to pursue their dance careers until the late 1970s, whereupon they headed West. In addition to dancing and filmmaking, the couple ran a construction business and raised horses together.
She has lived on a five acre homestead near the Angeles National Forest since 1985, along with a "menagerie of dogs, prized Arabian horses and rodeo cattle."^[2] She also has a 20,000 acre ranch in New Mexico.^[4]
