Steps:

Copy the universal_gb_root_v15.zip to your sd card
Boot into recovery
Power off -> Hold "VolumeUp+Home+Power" until Samsung logo. Select flash update zip using vol buttons for scrolling and power for selecting.

Steps:

Download and save the Darky ODIN package to a folder on your computer.
Backup all data including SMS - SMS Backup & Restore, Contacts - Google Sync, Apps+Data - Titanium Backup etc.
Enable USB Debugging from Settings -> Application -> USB Debugging.
Do not connect the cable previously.
Extract the downloaded package to a folder.
Start ODIN v1.3
Add the pit in the PIT field.
Tick re-partition
Put "JVU-RE.tar" into PDA
Start phone in download mode. Turn off phone -> press and hold "VolDown+Home+Power" phone will boot into download mode.
Connect USB cable to phone and computer.
One port will turn yellow in ODIN
Hit "Start"
Sit back and relax.
This can be performed whenever your phone stops responding or on any version.

Missing apps?
Here's what to do:

Download the missing apps zip from the link bellow
Put it on your internal SDCARD
Open DarkyOTA -> General tab -> Flash/Install File from SDCARD -> browse to the ZIP
You phone will reboot and the apps will be put on your SDCARD
After your phone boots, use DarkyOTA -> General tab -> Install System Apps to install any or all of the missing Apps

Stock SystemUI.apk is also there for those that do not like the toggles and MIUI battery bar.

Missing apps will also be available in the updates section in DatkyOTA -> OTA tab.

Steps [Follow exactly as specified]:

Root your phone
Understand that rooting voids your warranty. You take full responsibility for what happens to your phone.
If you are already running an unofficial version like CyanogenMod etc. then skip to step 2 else Root your phone.

Backup all your data
SMSBackup Restore for SMS, Google Sync for Contacts, Titanium Backup for Apps and Data.
Copy SlimICS base+essentials to SD card.
Boot into Recovery Mode
Press and hold "VolumeUp+Home+Power" until Samsung logo appears.
Goto Wipe/Factory reset phone by scrolling using the vol buttons and select using the power button. Then select yes factory reset. Go back and then select advanced -> clear dalvik cache. From advanced if init.d is present go and clear it also.
From main menu select Flash zip from sd card -> select zip from sd card -> navigate to the location of the SlimICS base zip and flash it, followed by the essentials pack.

"Command Prompt Here" in Windows

We’ve previously explained how you can open a command prompt by holding down the Shift key and right-clicking on a folder or the desktop… but how do you make that item show up without having to hold down the shift key?

There’s a simple registry hack you can do that will enable “Open Command Window Here” item without holding down the shift key:

You can either manually edit the registry, or use the downloadable registry hack files to do it.

Manual Registry Hack

Open up regedit.exe through the start menu search or run box, and then browse down to the following key to add the right-click menu to drive icons:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\cmd

Rename the “Extended” key on the right to something else, like “Extended-Orig”. (Note that you could simply delete the value, but renaming it ensures that you can quickly rename it back to reverse the change)

To add the item to the folder context menu, browse down to the following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\cmd

And rename the same “Extended” key here. The changes should be immediate.

BSOD in 3 Strokes

Have you ever wanted to show off your keyboard ninja skills by taking down Windows with just a couple of keystrokes? All you have to do is add one registry key, and then you can impress your friends… or use it to convince people to switch to Linux.

This isn’t a bug, it’s a “feature” in Windows that is designed to let users trigger a crash dump for testing purposes. There’s even a whole Microsoft KB article on the subject.

To enable this feature, open up regedit and then browse down to one of these keys, depending on your keyboard type:

USB Keyboard

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\kbdhid\Parameters

PS/2 Keyboard

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\i8042prt\Parameters

Now right-click on the right-hand pane and add a new DWORD key namedCrashOnCtrlScroll, giving it a value of 1.

Reboot your computer, and when it starts back up you can trigger the Blue Screen of Death by using the following keyboard shortcut:

Hold down Right Ctrl and hit Scroll Lock twice

To remove this “feature” you can just delete the registry key and then restart your computer again.

Add any Application to Windows Desktop Right-Click Menu

If you want really quick access to launch a frequently used application without putting extra icons on your desktop, you can add that application to the context menu for the desktop with a simple registry hack. Here’s how to do it.

Naturally, we’ve also covered the opposite scenario—how to clean up your messy Windows context menu, which is an equally useful read if you’ve got a bunch of items you want to remove from the menu.

Note: this article was originally published a few years ago, but we’ve updated and polished it for Windows 7 and are republishing it for you today.

Adding Applications to the Desktop Context Menu

For today’s lesson we’ll show you how to add Notepad to the menu, but you could add any applications you want instead. The first thing you’ll want to do is open up regedit.exe through the Start Menu search or run box, and then browse down to the following key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\Background\shell

The screen should look similar to this one if you are in the right place.

Next, you’ll want to create a new key underneath the shell key, the name of which is exactly what is going to show up on the desktop menu. Right-click on the “shell” key, and then choose New \ Key from the menu.

Give the new key the name that you want to show up on the desktop context menu. For this example we’ll be using Notepad.

Optional: If you want to assign an “Alt” key to this menu entry for quicker access, you can change the (Default) value on the right and put an & character in front of the key you want to use. For instance, if you wanted to be able to just use the N key to launch Notepad once the desktop context menu pops up, you can do this:

Personally I don’t find this terribly useful since you have to use the mouse to right-click on the desktop… may as well just use the mouse to click the item. Still, for completeness I’ve included it.

Next you’ll need to create the command key that will actually hold the command used to launch the application. Right-click on the new Notepad key, and then choose New \ Key from the menu.

Give this key the name “command” in lowercase.

To complete this step you’ll need the full path to the application that you want to launch. You can use Shift + Right-Click to get the Copy as Path menu item to find this more quickly. Note: of course, for Notepad you wouldn’t need the full path, but this is just an example.

Now click on “command” on the left side, and then double-click on the (Default) key in the right side to edit the string value.

Paste in the full path to the executable that you got from the “Copy as Path” step above, or you can put in the full path yourself if you’d like.

Once it’s done, it should look like this:

And right-clicking on the desktop will produce the new menu item… naturally, using this menu item should launch Notepad.

You can add as many applications to the desktop context menu as you’d like, just repeat the steps again with a new menu item name.

22 common Windows 7 problems solved

1. Problem Steps Recorder

As the local PC guru you're probably very used to friends and family asking for help with their computer problems, yet having no idea how to clearly describe what's going on. It's frustrating, but Microsoft feels your pain, and Windows 7 will include an excellent new solution in the Problem Steps Recorder.

When any app starts misbehaving under Windows 7 then all your friends need do is click Start, type PSR and press Enter, then click Start Record. If they then work through whatever they're doing then the Problem Steps Recorder will record every click and keypress, take screen grabs, and package everything up into a single zipped MHTML file when they're finished, ready for emailing to you. It's quick, easy and effective, and will save you hours of troubleshooting time.

2. Burn images

Windows 7 finally introduces a feature that other operating systems have had for years - the ability to burn ISO images to CDs or DVDs. And it couldn't be much easier to use. Just double-click the ISO image, choose the drive with the blank disc, click Burn and watch as your disc is created.

3. Create and mount VHD files

Microsoft's Virtual PC creates its virtual machine hard drives in VHD files, and Windows 7 can now mount these directly so you can access them in the host system. Click Start, type diskmgmt.msc and press Enter, then click Action > Attach VHD and choose the file you'd like to mount. It will then appear as a virtual drive in Explorer and can be accessed, copied or written just like any other drive.

Click Action > Create VHD and you can now create a new virtual drive of your own (right-click it, select Initialise Disk, and after it's set up right-click the unallocated space and select New Simple Volume to set this up). Again, you'll be left with a virtual drive that behaves just like any other, where you can drag and drop files, install programs, test partitioning software or do whatever you like. But it's actually just this VHD file on your real hard drive which you can easily back up or share with others. Right-click the disk (that's the left-hand label that says "Disk 2" or whatever) and select Detach VHD to remove it.

The command line DISKPART utility has also been upgraded with tools to detach a VHD file, and an EXPAND command to increase a virtual disk's maximum size. Don't play around with this unless you know what you're doing, though - it's all too easy to trash your system.

4. Troubleshoot problems

If some part of Windows 7 is behaving strangely, and you don't know why, then click Control Panel > Find and fix problems (or 'Troubleshooting') to access the new troubleshooting packs. These are simple wizards that will resolve common problems, check your settings, clean up your system and more.

5. Startup repair

If you've downloaded Windows 7 (and even if you haven't) it's a good idea to create a system repair disc straight away in case you run into problems booting the OS later on. Click Start > Maintenance > Create a System Repair Disc, and let Windows 7 build a bootable emergency disc. If the worst does happen then it could be the only way to get your PC running again.

6. Take control

Tired of the kids installing dubious software or running applications you'd rather they left alone? AppLocker is a new Windows 7 feature that ensures users can only run the programs you specify. Don't worry, that's easier to set up than it sounds: you can create a rule to allow everything signed by a particular publisher, so choose Microsoft, say, and that one rule will let you run all signed Microsoft applications. Launch GPEDIT.MSC and go to Computer Configuration > Windows Settings > Security Settings > Application Control Policies > AppLocker to get a feel for how this works.

7. Calculate more

At first glance the Windows 7 calculator looks just like Vista's version, but explore the Mode menu and you'll see powerful new Statistics and Programmer views. And if you're clueless about bitwise manipulation, then try the Options menu instead. This offers many different unit conversions (length, weight, volume and more), date calculations (how many days between two dates?), and spreadsheet-type templates to help you calculate vehicle mileage, mortgage rates and more.

Don't take any Windows 7 applet at face value, then - there are some very powerful new features hidden in the background. Be sure to explore every option in all Windows applets to ensure you don't miss anything important.

8. Switch to a projector

Windows 7 now provides a standard way to switch your display from one monitor to another, or a projector - just press Win+P or run DisplaySwitch.exe and choose your preferred display. (This will have no effect if you've only one display connected.)

9. Get a power efficiency report

If you have a laptop, you can use the efficiency calculator to get Windows 7 to generate loads of useful information about its power consumption. Used in the right way, this can help you make huge gains in terms of battery life and performance. To do this you must open a command prompt as an administrator by typing 'cmd' in Start Search, and when the cmd icon appears, right-click it and choose Run as administrator.

Then at the command line, just type in 'powercfg -energy' (without quotes) and hit Return, and Windows 7 will scan your system looking for ways to improve power efficiency. It will then publish the results in an HTML file, usually in the System32 folder. Just follow the path it gives you to find your report.

10. Understanding System Restore

Using System Restore in previous versions of Windows has been something of a gamble. There's no way of telling which applications or drivers it might affect - you just have to try it and see.

Windows 7 is different. Right-click Computer, select Properties > System Protection > System Restore > Next, and choose the restore point you'd like to use. Click the new button to 'Scan for affected programs' and Windows will tell you which (if any) programs and drivers will be deleted or recovered by selecting this restore point. 11. Set the time zone

System administrators will appreciate the new command line tzutil.exe utility, which lets you set a PC's time zone from scripts. If you wanted to set a PC to Greenwich Mean Time, for instance, you'd use the command

tzutil /s "gmt standard time"

The command "tzutil /g" displays the current time zone, "tzutil /l" lists all possible time zones, and "tzutil /?" displays details on how the command works.

12. Calibrate your screen

The colours you see on your screen will vary depending on your monitor, graphics cards settings, lighting and more, yet most people use the same default Windows colour profile. And that means a digital photo you think looks perfect might appear very poor to everybody else. Fortunately Windows 7 now provides a Display Colour Calibration Wizard that helps you properly set up your brightness, contrast and colour settings, and a ClearType tuner to ensure text is crisp and sharp. Click Start, type DCCW and press Enter to give it a try.

13. Clean up Live Essentials

Installing Windows Live Essentials will get you the new versions of Mail, Movie Maker, Photo Gallery and others - great. Unfortunately it also includes other components that may be unnecessary, but if you like to keep a clean system then these can be quickly removed.

If you left the default "Set your search provider" option selected during installation, for instance, Windows Live will install Choice Guard, a tool to set your browser home page and search engine, and prevent other programs from changing them. If this causes problems later, or you just decide you don't need it, then Choice Guard may be removed by clicking Start, typing msiexec /x and pressing [Enter].

Windows Live Essentials also adds an ActiveX Control to help upload your files to Windows Live SkyDrive, as well as the Windows Live Sign-in Assistant, which makes it easier to manage and switch between multiple Windows Live accounts. If you're sure you'll never need either then remove them with the Control Panel "Uninstall a Program" applet.

14. Add network support

By default Windows Live MovieMaker won't let you import files over a network, but a quick Registry tweak will change this. Run REGEDIT, browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Live\Movie Maker, add a DWORD value called AllowNetworkFiles and set it to 1 to add network support.

15. Activate XP mode

If you've old but important software that no longer runs under Windows 7, then you could try using XP Mode, a virtual copy of XP that runs in a window on your Windows 7 desktop. But there's a big potential problem, as XP Mode only works with systems that have hardware virtualisation (AMD-V or Intel VT) built-in and turned on. If you've a compatible CPU then this may just be a matter of enabling the option in your BIOS set-up program, however some high profile brands, including Sony Vaio, disable the setting for "security reasons". And that blocks XP Mode from working, too.

One solution has emerged, but it's a little risky, as essentially you'll have to alter a byte in your laptop firmware and hope this doesn't have any unexpected side-effects. Gulp. If you're feeling brave then take a look at theFeature Enable Blog for the details, but don't blame us if it goes wrong.

A safer approach might be to use Virtual Box, a virtualisation tool that doesn't insist on hardware support, but then you will need to find a licensed copy of XP (or whatever other Windows version your software requires) for its virtual machine.

16. Enable virtual Wi-Fi

Windows 7 includes a little-known new feature called Virtual Wi-Fi, which effectively turns your PC or laptop into a software-based router. Any other Wi-Fi-enabled devices within range - a desktop, laptop, an iPod perhaps - will "see" you as a new network and, once logged on, immediately be able to share your internet connection.

This will only work if your wireless adapter driver supports it, though, and not all do. Check with your adapter manufacturer and make sure you've installed the very latest drivers to give you the best chance.

Once you have driver support then the easiest approach is to get a network tool that can set up virtual Wi-Fi for you. Virtual Router (below) is free, easy to use and should have you sharing your internet connection very quickly.

17. Recover locked-up apps

If an application locks up under a previous version of Windows then there was nothing you could do about it. A new Windows 7 option, however, can not only explain the problem, but may get your program working again without any loss of data.

When the lockup occurs, click Start, type RESMON and click the RESMON.EXE link to launch the Resource Monitor.

Find your frozen process in the CPU pane (it should be highlighted in red), right-click it and select Analyze Wait Chain.

If you see at least two processes in the list, then the lowest, at the end of the tree, is the one holding up your program. If it's not a vital Windows component, or anything else critical, then save any work in other open applications, check the box next to this process, click End Process, and your locked-up program will often spring back to life.

18. Fault-Tolerant Help

Windows 7 includes a new feature called the Fault Tolerant Help (FTH), a clever technology that looks out for unstable processes, detects those that may be crashing due to memory issues, and applies several real-time fixes to try and help. If these work, that's fine - if not, the fixes will be undone and they won't be applied to that process again.

While this is very good in theory, it can leave you confused as some applications crash, then start working (sometimes) for no apparent reason. So if you'd like to check if the FTH is running on your PC, launch REGEDIT, and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\FTH - any program currently being protected by the FTH will be listed in the State key.

Experienced users may also try tweaking the FTH settings to catch more problems, and perhaps improve system stability. A post on Microsoft's Ask The Performance Team blog (bit.ly/d1JStu) explains what the various FTH Registry keys mean.

19. Automatically switch your default printer

Windows 7's location-aware printing allows the operating system to automatically switch your default printer as you move from one network to another.

To set this up, first click Start, type Devices, and click the Devices and Printers link.

Select a printer and click Manage Default Printers (this is only visible on a mobile device, like a laptop - you won't see it on a PC).

Choose the "Change my default printer when I change networks" option, select a network, the default printer you'd like to use, and click Add.

Repeat the process for other networks available, and pick a default printer for each one.

And now, as you connect to a new network, Windows 7 will check this list and set the default printer to the one that you've defined.

But now you want more. You want the cool tips and tricks that make Windows 7 fun!

So here are the best ones to help you get the most out of your new OS. In this article, we will focus on the Windows 7 interface to get you started on the road to becoming a Windows 7 Power User. In Part 2, we will be looking at advanced tips for usability, performance, and security.

1. Use Keyboard Shortcuts

Using the mouse, you can drag-n-dock windows to either side of the screen, or drag it to the top to maximize it. These keyboard shortcuts are even faster:

Win+Left Arrow and Win+Right Arrow dock the window to the left and right side of the screen
Win+Up Arrow and Win+Down Arrow maximize and restore/minimize
Win+M minimizes everything
Alt+Up, Alt+Left Arrow, Alt+Right Arrow navigate to parent folder, or browse Back and Forward through folders in Explorer
Win+Home minimizes/restores all open windows except the active window
Alt+Win+# accesses the Jump List of program number ‘#’ on the taskbar

2.Rearrange System Tray Icons

You can rearrange icons on the taskbar as you wish and start new (or switch to running) instances of the first ten taskbar programs using Win+1, Win+2, and so on. The cool thing is you can also rearrange system tray icons. Reorder them on the tray or move them outside or back in the tray. Take control of what you want to always keep an eye on, and from which apps you’ll require notifications.

3. Access Jump Lists with the Left Mouse Button

Jump Lists usually show up when you right-click on a taskbar icon. However, they can also be accessed by holding the left mouse button and dragging upwards. If you’re using a laptop touchpad or a touch screen, this is convenient because you do not have to click any button to access a context menu.

4. Add Any Folder to Favorites

You can add any library or folder to the Favorites section in Windows Explorer. To add a folder, navigate to it in Explorer, right-click Favorites in the left navigation pane, and selectAdd current location to Favorites. Now you get quick access to your favorite folders in allFile->Save As dialogs!

5. Pin Frequently Used Folders to the Taskbar

Right-click, drag, and pin your favorite folders to Windows Explorer on the taskbar. They will now show up in the Jump List when you right click on Explorer giving you quick access to your favorite folders.

6. Pin Control Panel to the Taskbar

You cannot pin the Control Panel to the taskbar via the Start Menu or by drag and drop. Open the Control Panel and right-click its taskbar icon to pin it to the taskbar. An advantage of this is that Control Panel’s Jump List allows quick access to recently used functions.

7. Create Keyboard Shortcuts for Programs

You can create keyboard shortcuts for any program in Windows 7. Right-click the program icon and select Properties. Select the Shortcut tab, click in Shortcut key, to set the keyboard shortcut for that program.

8. Open Command Prompt in Any Folder

Like the command prompt? Miss the “˜Open Command Window Here’ Windows XP power toy? Press “˜Shift’ when right-clicking on a folder to get that option in the context menu. This also works on the desktop. No power toy required!

9. View Expanded ‘Send To’ Menu

Press Shift when right-clicking on a folder to get an expanded Send To menu.

10. Adjust Screen Text with Clear Type

Use Clear Type Tuner for the best look on your LCD monitor or laptop screen. Run “˜cttune.exe‘ from the Start Menu search box, or go to the Control Panel Display applet, and select Adjust ClearType Text from the left.

11. Get Exact Colors On Your Screen

If you are an artist or you work with colors, use the Calibrate Color option in the Control Panel Display applet or run dccw.exe from the Start Menu search box. You can adjust gamma, brightness, contrast, and color balance, ensuring that colors are displayed correctly on your screen.

12. Customize the Power Button

If you restart your computer more often than you shut it down, change the default Shutdownpower button to Restart. Right-click on Start, select Properties, and choose the Power button action that you use the most.

13. Customize Number of Items in Jump Lists & Start Menu

Right-click Start, select Properties, click Customize and choose the number of recent programs to be shown in the Start Menu and the number of items displayed in Jump Listsfrom the Start Menu Size section below.

14. Search Internet from the Start Menu

Enable Internet search from the Start Menu using your default browser. Run GPEDIT.MSCfrom the Start Menu search box to start the Group Policy Editor. In the left pane, go to User Configuration->Administrative Templates->Start Menu and Taskbar. In the right pane, right-click to Edit and Enable Add Search Internet link to Start Menu.

15. Add Videos to Start Menu

Windows 7 does not place a link to your videos on the Start Menu by default. To add a link to your videos on the Start Menu, right-click Start, select Properties, click on Customize. In the Videos section at the bottom, choose Display as a link.

Browse From Your Terminal : W3C

W3M is a terminal web browser for Linux. It’s got a few tricks up its sleeve, including support for images, tabs, tables, frames and other features not usually included with terminal web browsers.

If you’ve used Linux for a while, you probably remember using a terminal browser to Google up a solution for your hardware when the X server refused to load. Modern X servers have advanced far beyond this, but W3M and other terminal browsers can still be useful.

Installing W3M

W3M isn’t included by default on most Linux distributions. You’ll want to install the mainw3m package and the w3m-img package if you want inline image support. Use the following command on Ubuntu:

sudo apt-get install w3m w3m-img

Basic Browsing

W3M has quite a few command-line options, but none are mandatory. The only thing you need to specify is a web page address. Want to bring up Google? Just use the w3m google.com command.

You can use the arrow keys to move the cursor around or click at a desired location to move the cursor there. If you want to type in a text box, select the text box with your cursor and press Enter before typing your text. W3M treats your keystrokes as commands if you just start typing.

Load a hyperlink by selecting it with your cursor and pressing Enter. You don’t have to select hyperlinks manually — press the Tab key to position your cursor over the next hyperlink on the page.

Shift-B will take you back a page. If you want to load a different URL, press Shift-U and you’ll get an URL prompt. Press Shift-H to view the help page if you want to see a more complete list of keyboard shortcuts.

Images in the Terminal

W3M supports images, so where are they? Well, terminals like GNOME Terminal and KDE’s Konsole can’t display W3M’s images. Other terminals, such as Xterm, can. W3M will also display images if you’re running it in a framebuffer console, so you don’t need an X server running to take advantage of this feature.

Another feature that doesn’t work in GNOME Terminal or Konsole is W3M’s right-click menu.

Browser Tabs

How did we ever live without tabs? They’re an essential feature for desktop web browsers. W3M includes tabs, too. Just press Shift-T to open a new tab.

You can switch between tabs by clicking them, but we’re trying to be terminal ninjas here. Use the { and } keys to switch between tabs without touching your mouse (that’s Shift-[and Shift-]).

Gmail in the Terminal

W3M isn’t stuck in the past, like Lynx (another web browser for the terminal) is. It can render tables, frames and even has support for Gmail’s basic HTML interface.

You’d probably feel more comfortable accessing Gmail with an IMAP client from your terminal, but hey — it works.

It may not be a fountain of youth, but Photoshop is the secret of beauty experts everywhere. Here’s some tips on how to reduce wrinkles and make the people in your pictures look younger in virtually no time at all.

Whatever you might think about using photo editors to create an unrealistic standard of beauty, the fact remains is that it’s done every day by professional image editors. And today we’re going to show you some tricks that even the pros use to keep models looking young. So open up Photoshop or GIMP and get ready to take some years off. Keep reading!

How To Take Years off of a Face

We’ll be covering three easy tips to make faces look younger while keeping an image looking realistic. Start with an appropriate image, preferably high resolution, and open up your favorite image editor. Today, we’re using Photoshop, but GIMP users can follow along and use this same method, since GIMP has all of the tools and blending modes we’re using today. Let’s begin!

Tip One: Reducing Wrinkles

The common denominator of most wrinkles is that they’re darker than the rest of the skin tones. In order to make a person look younger, the first step is lightening the shadows in the wrinkles.

Obvious methods, like using the dodge tool (Shortcut key )can sometimes be effective, but will desaturate your image. Notice how the area where the wrinkles are being removed is becoming gray.

If this desaturation is okay with you, you can use the dodge with the setting on “Shadows” as shown above to affect the darkest areas the most. There are better methods, though.

Try this instead: Since the desturation isn’t okay, this method is slicker and more professional. Create a new layer and set the Blending Mode to “Lighten” as shown.

In your new layer, use the eyedropper to grab colors that are lighter than the shadows in the wrinkle areas.

With the brush tool (Shortcut key ) use the colors you pick from the image and paint into the “Lighten” layer. Reduce wrinkles and texture by lightening them, but don’t go overboard. Start with darker colors and change to lighter colors as you go. It’s recommended to change the color you’re painting with multiple times to match the skin tones and keep the image looking natural.

Use whatever size brush suits you, but you’d be better off using a very soft brush when you paint. With the brush tool selected, right click to set your brush to 0% hardness.

Done carefully, this technique (or others that lighten these kinds of shadows) can reduce the impact of heavy wrinkles and make a subject look considerably younger. Be careful not to push it too far, or it will look excessively Photoshopped.

Tip Two: Reducing Shiny Skin Highlights

Again, an attempt to use the burn tool on the image to remove the shiny skin highlights is a failure. The skin tone instantly turns gray and has to be undone.

Even a setting on “highlights” creates serious problems. This technique can sometimes be effective, but, again, there are better methods.

Try this instead: Create a new layer with the blending mode set to “Darken” as shown above. This can go on top of your other layers without any trouble.

Grab a mid tone that is slightly darker than your highlight areas and use the brush tool to paint into your “Darken” layer.

Subtly darken your highlights. Your intention is to reduce the detail in the highlights, smoothing out skin imperfections. Be careful to keep your image looking as natural as possible.

Again, the brush tool should be set to a 0% hardness. Set it by right clicking with the brush tool active.

The reduced highlights can also make a person look healthier, which adds to the illusion of youth.

Tip Three: Softening Details and Harsh Wrinkles

With the wrinkles reduced in both the highlight and shadow areas, we can take our image one step further by reducing and softening detail throughout selected areas. Here’s how.

Press to copy your image as it appears and place it on top of all your adjustment layers. It should do it automatically—this is one of the so-called “hidden” shortcuts in Photoshop.

Navigate to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur to create a blur on this layer. Adjust it until the image loses detail in the worst areas, but not altogether. Press OK when you’re satisfied.

Find the in the layers panel, then Alt + Click the icon to create a new layer mask set to masking everything out. The blurred copy of your image should disappear. At this point, we’re going to selectively bring back parts of it to soften the most textured parts of our image.

Grab your brush tool again and paint white into your layer mask. Use it in areas where the details and skin textures are making the face look older and more weathered. Don’t overdo it or you’ll make the image look phony.

Only paint into your wide areas and keep away from edges to keep them sharp, unblurred and clean.

Comparing Our Finished, Tweaked Image

Our final image is a pretty impressive and convincing transformation. We haven’t turned her into a twenty year old, but these simple tricks have definitely taken years off.

Wireshark, a network analysis tool formerly known as Ethereal, captures packets in real time and display them in human-readable format. Wireshark includes filters, color-coding and other features that let you dig deep into network traffic and inspect individual packets.

This tutorial will get you up to speed with the basics of capturing packets, filtering them and inspecting them. You can use Wireshark to inspect a suspicious program’s network traffic, analyze the traffic flow on your network or troubleshoot network problems.

Getting Wireshark

You can download Wireshark for Windows or Mac OS X from its official website. If you’re using Linux or another UNIX-like system, you’ll probably find Wireshark in its package repositories. For example, if you’re using Ubuntu, you’ll find Wireshark in the Ubuntu Software Center.

Just a quick warning: Many organizations don’t allow Wireshark and similar tools on their networks. Don’t use this tool at work unless you have permission.

Capturing Packets

After downloading and installing Wireshark, you can launch it and click the name of an interface under Interface List to start capturing packets on that interface. For example, if you want to capture traffic on the wireless network, click your wireless interface. You can configure advanced features by clicking Capture Options, but this isn’t necessary for now.

As soon as you click the interface’s name, you’ll see the packets start to appear in real time. Wireshark captures each packet sent to or from your system. If you’re capturing on a wireless interface and have promiscuous mode enabled in your capture options, you’ll also see other the other packets on the network.

Click the stop capture button near the top left corner of the window when you want to stop capturing traffic.

Color Coding

You’ll probably see packets highlighted in green, blue and black. Wireshark uses colors to help you identify the types of traffic at a glance. By default, green is TCP traffic, dark blue is DNS traffic, light blue is UDP traffic and black identifies TCP packets with problems — for example, they could have been delivered out-of-order.

Sample Captures

If there’s nothing interesting on your own network to inspect, Wireshark’s wiki has you covered. The wiki contains a page of sample capture files that you can load and inspect.

Opening a capture file is easy; just click Open on the main screen and browse for a file. You can also save your own captures in Wireshark and open them later.

Filtering Packets

If you’re trying to inspect something specific, such as the traffic a program sends when phoning home, it helps to close down all other applications using the network so you can narrow down the traffic. Still, you’ll likely have a large amount of packets to sift through. That’s where Wireshark’s filters come in.

The most basic way to apply a filter is by typing it into the filter box at the top of the window and clicking Apply (or pressing Enter). For example, type “dns” and you’ll see only DNS packets. When you start typing, Wireshark will help you autocomplete your filter.

You can also click the Analyze menu and select Display Filters to create a new filter.

Another interesting thing you can do is right-click a packet and select Follow TCP Stream.

You’ll see the full conversation between the client and the server.

Close the window and you’ll find a filter has been applied automatically — Wireshark is showing you the packets that make up the conversation.

Inspecting Packets

Click a packet to select it and you can dig down to view its details.

You can also create filters from here — just right-click one of the details and use the Apply as Filter submenu to create a filter based on it.

Wireshark is an extremely powerful tool, and this tutorial is just scratching the surface of what you can do with it. Professionals use it to debug network protocol implementations, examine security problems and inspect network protocol internals.

Windows 8 To Not Have A Start Button

The move to the new Metro UI as the default for Windows 8 has stirred up a good bit of controversy since its introduction this past Fall. Now Microsoft is taking another step in this new irection with the removal of the Start Button in the upcoming “Consumer Preview”. As you can see in the final “pre Consumer Preview” build screenshots above and below, theSuper Bar remains intact, but definitely lacks the classic Start Button that we have all been accustomed to seeing. Instead you will have a “Hot Corner” available that will display a thumbnail-like user interface (Metro and desktop modes) for accessing the Windows desktop and Start Screen.

Securing Google with Google Authenticator

Google Authenticator protects your Google account from keyloggers and password theft. With two-factor authentication, you’ll need both your password and an authentication code to log in. The Google Authenticator app runs on Android, iPhone, iPod, iPad and BlackBerry devices.

We’ve mentioned using two-factor authentication with a text or voice message in the past, but the Google Authenticator app can be more convenient. It displays a code that changes every thirty seconds. The code is generated on your device, so you can use the app even if your device is offline.

Activating Two-Step Authentication

First, click your email address or name at the top right corner of any Google page and select Account Settings.

Next, click the Edit link to the right of 2-Step Verification in the Security section.

Google makes us set up phone-based verification, even though we’ll be using the app. The phone number we enter now will become our backup phone number later. You can receive the code via a text message or voice phone call — after receiving it, enter the code and click Next to continue.

You’ll be asked whether you want to remember the computer or not. To minimize the hassle of two-step authentication, you can mark computers as trusted when you log in. If you do, you won’t have to enter an authentication code on that computer for the next 30 days.

The last screen activates two-factor authentication. You’ll be forced to log back in after activating it.

Enabling Google Authenticator

After logging back in, you can click your type of mobile device to start setting up Google Authenticator. (Click “Do This Later” if you’re asked to set up application-specific passwords at this point.)

The page provides instructions for downloading the Google Authenticator app on your device — on Android and iPhone, you can get it from the Market or App Store.

After launching the app, you can use the Scan a Barcode feature and scan the QR code from your screen or click the “Can’t scan the barcode?” link on the page and use theManually Add Account feature to type it in.

After adding the account to Google Authenticator, you’ll have to type in the generated code. If the code is about to expire, wait for it to change before starting to type it.

After it’s verified, click the “Save” button.

The phone number you entered earlier becomes your backup phone number. You can use this number to receive an authentication code if you ever lose access to the Google Authenticator app or reformat your device.

Printing Backup Codes

Google offers printable backup codes you can log in with, even if you lose access to both your mobile application and backup phone number.

Print them out and keep them safe — you’ll be locked out of your Google account if you lose all three authentication methods.

Each code can only be used once, and all existing codes will become invalid if you click the “Generate New Codes” button.

Creating Application-Specific Passwords

Two-step authentication breaks email clients, chat programs and anything else that uses your Google account’s password. You’ll have to create an application-specific password for each application that doesn’t support two-step authentication.

Provide a name for each application to create a password for it.

Enter the provided password into the application. You don’t need to remember this password; you can always create a new one later.

These passwords grant access to your entire Google account and skip the two-factor authentication, so keep them safe. You can revoke them from this page if they’re ever compromised.

Logging In

The next time you sign in, you’ll have to provide the current code from your Google Authenticator app.

The Google Authenticator app is open source and based on open standards. Other software projects, such as LastPass, have even started using Google Authenticator to implement their own two-factor authentication.

Control Android From PC

AirDroid for Android replaces your USB cable with your web browser. Transfer files back and forth, send text messages, play music, view your photos and manage applications — all without installing anything on your computer.

AirDroid is completely free; it doesn’t even contain ads. It functions as a web server, allowing your Android device and your computer to communicate over the network.

Getting Started

AirDroid is available for free from the Android Market. It supports Android 2.1 and later including Android 4.0.

Launch the AirDroid app once it’s installed and tap Start to start the AirDroid server.

AirDroid tells you exactly what to do — plug the IP address into your web browser’s address bar.

You’ll see a login page. Use the code from your Android to log in. This prevents unauthorized access to your device.

If you don’t see a login page, your Android device and computer are probably on different networks. They must be on the same network to connect. If your computer is connected via a wired connection, it’s possible the Wi-Fi network and wired network are isolated from each other.

AirDroid’s Home Screen

Once you’ve connected, you’ll see AirDroid’s main page, which contains links and statistics about your device. At the bottom right corner, you’ll see the Wi-Fi connection strength, bars of cellular coverage and battery level of your Android device.

Click the Detail link to see more information about your device’s storage and the files it contains.

Transferring & Managing Files

Click Files to view the contents of your SD card. If you want to clean out your file system, deleting files from here is quicker than going through a file manager on your Android.

Use the right-click menu to manage files — Delete deletes them permanently, while Exportdownloads them to your computer. Export as ZIP downloads several files or directories to your computer as a single file.

Use the Import button to add files to your device over the air, without lifting that USB cable.

Sending Text Messages

You can send SMS messages using the Messages panel. No need to pick up your Android and type messages in; participate in a conversation right from your web browser.

The Contacts and Call Logs panels allow you to browse your Android’s contacts and view its call history.

Playing Music

The Music panel allows you to use your Android device as a jukebox. Search for music and play it — you’ll get a widget that stays on AirDroid’s home screen.

The same Export and Import options allow you to transfer music files to and from your device.

Ring tones can be managed separately from the Ringtones panel

Viewing Photos

Use the Photos panel to show off photos on your monitor instead of your Android’s small screen.

Managing Apps

From the Apps screen, you can view your device’s installed apps. You can search for specific apps, or sort them by their size or installation date.

Use the Uninstall button to remove an app or the Export button to download it as an APK file to your computer.

If you want to install an app from an APK file, use the Install App button to upload it to your device and install it. To install apps from the Android Market, click the Market icon.

You’ll have to confirm each app removal and installation by tapping the option on your Android’s screen.

Using the Clipboard

If you want to copy and paste between your computer and your Android, use theClipboard option. The From Device button copies the clipboard from your device into the clipboard box. The To Device button sends the text in the box to the Android clipboard.

Now you’re ready to replace your USB cable with your web browser. If it wasn’t for charging, you’d never have to touch your Android’s USB cable again.

A Better Way to Enlarge Images

Enlarging Using Photoshop

Here’s our image at our starting point. This is zoomed to 100%, only a paltry 150 pixels wide.

As we can see, this is painfully low resolution. Let’s improve things somewhat with a basic enlargement.

Navigate to Image > Image Size. Where it says “Resample Image” you can change the type of anti-aliasing used to enlarge and smooth the image. Change it to “Bicubic Smoother (best for enlargement).” By default, Photoshop uses “Bicubic.”

Notice the difference in the Bicubic Smoother version on the left versus the basic “Bicubic” enlargement on the right. Changing the type of anti-aliasing can make a huge difference the edges in your image, helping to keep them smoother, less jaggy. This can make a big difference

Improving Detail in Enlarged Images

Most Photoshop users don’t go beyond RGB or CMYK. Today, we’ll be using a different color mode called Lab Color. Switch any enlarged image (we’re going to be using our image from before) and change it to Lab color by navigating to Image > Mode > Lab Color.

Make sure you have a channels panel open by going to Window > Channels. Then select the “Lightness” channel or click the beside the a and b channels as shown.

With “Lightness” selected, we’ll perform a Smart Sharpen filter by going to Filter > Smart Sharpen.

The settings above worked for our example quite well, but feel free to fiddle around and find your own. You’ll probably want to keep your “Remove” setting to “Gaussian Blur” as shown above.

You can remain in Lab Color or convert back to RGB. Unlike a conversion between RGB and CMYK, RGB converts perfectly to Lab without any noticeable color shift. In either color mode, select your combined channelset by pressing Ctrl + 2.

It’s not perfect, but the comparison of before and after is pretty dramatic. Our updated image (on the right) has a much richer skin texture and doesn’t look like it was enlarged nearly 2000% from an image 150 pixels wide.

Dual Booting Windows 7 & 8 Without Re-Partitioning

We can actually install Windows operating systems on a PC in multiple ways. But messing around with the Disk structure is never a good idea for n00bs. So here is a much for safe and friendly method.

How To:
We are going to use the GUI to create a blank VHD, a PowerShell script to expand the ".WIM" image file so we can install.

1. Creating The VHD
To create the VHD, go to a run prompt by pressing Win+R, and type diskmgmt.msc.

An MMC console will appear, and will have the Disk Management snap-in pre-loaded.

To create a new VHD, click on the action button in the menu bar, and select Create VHD.

Now you need to choose a location for the VHD file and set the size, which should be no less than 20 GB. You should probably choose a fixed size for best performance.

Windows will then create the VHD, the progress of this can be viewed in the Status Bar of the MMC snap-in.

Once the disk is created it will be in the list of partitions in the Disk Management console. You’ll want to initialize the disk by clicking on it and selecting initialize.

Leave the partition style at MBR(Master Boot Record) and click ok.

Once the disk has been given a partition style, we now need to create an actual volume on the partition. To do this right click on the black space and select “New Simple Volume”.

A wizard will open, you can just accept all the defaults until you get to this screen. Here change the Volume label to “Windows 8”, then click next and finish.

Now you have a new VHD file that is acting like a real hard drive.

Installing Windows 8 On The VHD

The first thing you need to do is open PowerShell as an administrator by opening Start Menu->All Programs->Accessories->Windows Powershell, right-clicking on the Windows PowerShell shortcut, and choosing Run as Administrator.

When PowerShell launches you will need to change the execution policy to allow you to run scripts. To do this, you need to type “Set-ExecutionPolicy RemoteSigned”. You will be given a security notice just type “Y” and press enter to accept. Once you have done this, leave the PowerShell window open as we will be using it again just now.

Next you need to download this script from MSDN, and then move it to the root of the C: Drive. Note that you could move it somewhere else if you want, but just change the rest of the instructions to use the alternate path.

Right-click on the file and select properties. Click the unblock button in the bottom right hand corner.

Now you will need to mount the the .ISO file that you downloaded from the Windows Developer website. If you don’t know how to mount an ISO file check out our guide. Once you have mounted the .ISO image switch back to the PowerShell window. Now type “CD C:\” to switch to the root of the drive.

Now type the following command into the shell window:

.\Install-WindowsImage.ps1 –WIM J:\Sources\Install.wim –Apply –Index 1 –Destination I:\

You should substitute the drive letter that comes after the –WIM for the drive of the mounted DVD image, and substitute the destination drive letter, in our case this is I:\, for the VHD that you created in the first section of this article. Then press enter.

Once it has completed you will be notified.

Now open an elevated command prompt, and type bcdboot.exe I:\Windows (assuming that I:\ is the drive with Windows 8 on it).

That’s it now when you boot Windows you will be greeted with the new OS Choosing Screen.

Thats it... All Done with it...!!!

Windows 8 Consumer Preview Coming Soon

The next preview of Windows 8 i.e., The Consumer Preview was announced to arrive on Feb 29, during the Mobile World Congress, in Barcelona, Spain. The use of Leap day, by the Redmond Software giant, is used to signify the leap that Microsoft wishes to gain from the next Operating System installment. Microsoft started giving out invites for their special occasion anticipating their next release the hugely downloaded Developer Preview release earlier.

The event is scheduled to last two hours, which means we should get a complete rundown of all the differences between the Developer and Consumer builds, the ecosystem Microsoft wants to build around the Metro interface platform and, finally, see some new hardware running Windows 8. We have, of course, briefly seen a laptop or two, like Lenovo’s Yoga, running Windows 8, but we’re still waiting for the anticipated parade of ARM-based Windows 8 tablets.
The Metro Interface will be the most evident change in the Windows platform for the last 27 years or so.??? Do you think it will be a success?

Resize Windows Partitions

Ever wanted to re-size your windows hard drive partitions...??? Well here's the perfect guide to do so...

How To:

Go to Disk Management.
<Win>+R and type "compmgmt.msc"
or Right-click Computer and select Manage.
On the left tree select Disk Management under Storage.
Select Your Hard Drive from the bottom partition list.
Drive C: is usually the Disc0.
Select the partition that you want to re-size.
Right-click and select Shrink Volume.
After the querying pop-up disappears a Shrink window will appear.
Enter the amount of disk space you want the present partition to have.
Confirm with Total size after Shrink field.
The size will be in MB i.e., 100GB=100x1024MB.
Press Shrink.
After shrinking you will see a new partition with label - "Unallocated space" and black borders.
This is the newly created empty partition.
Right-click this partition and select New Simple Volume.
Enter the drive letter and select Quick Format optionally.
Complete the process.
Voila New Partition.
Profit...???

Warning: The maximum number of partitions possible in a windows boot configuration is limited to four. So do not attempt to create excess number of partitions. It may lead to severe errors and irrecoverable loss of information.

Video's that we watch on YouTube can be easily saved by opening the video cache of your browser. Well there's an app that does just that easily. Video Cache View scans all your browser caches for files that were buffered and saved on your local machine.

How To:

Open Video Cache View.
