Blog Post Layout: Creating Searchable Website Content (Part 2)

A lot of people who don't understand the way web crawlers work to determine what a website or page is about will cram or stuff keywords all throughout a post or site and think that's gonna' do the job.

But that isn't the real error. The real error is that they should know how human operate (themselves being amongst the human race) and what it would look like to the reader to see a keyword used 12 times inside of a 200 word blog post or article. Welcome to the second installment of this series!

Blog or Article Title (H1 tags) Keywords if possible but not forced

I would say that titles of posts should be build in a way that grabs the attention of the reader and gets them involved in the post. If you can use a keyword in the title, awesome; if you can't then don't force it

Headers (H2, H3 tags) Use keywords or variations at the beginning of the headers-NATURALLY!

By using the appropriate tags in the HTML the subheadings will *BLAM!* at reader. When they scan your post and see these headings with your keywords they will know that your post is gonna' give them something. Don't disappoint them!

Primary keywords should be used at the beginning of a post.

Secondary keywords should be used once at the end of a post.

You can scatter other variations of your targeted words throughout the rest of the post but NATURALLY!

Example:

Primary Keyword="Great Coffee" ["Voted 'Great Coffee' by our customers!]

Secondary Keyword="Fresh coffee all day" [ Fresh Coffee Served All Day]

Variations to be used="homemade coffee", "flavored coffee", "hot latte"," cappuccino"," iced vanilla lattes"

Making your Images Relevant to your Site or Post

If you add an image of a steaming cup of coffee to your blog post and it is saved/titled as "image1.jpg" it isn't doing anything good. Instead, try naming it "steaming_hot_coffee".

Also, alt tags work great. This is the description that people will see if they have images turned off on their browser. Also, the web crawlers will identify with the relevancy of the content on the page.

Length of Blog Post

Usually the least amount of words necessary to convey the message is the right amount. I think most people would agree that a post of between 400 and 600 words is ideal. However, a QUALITY POST that shows enthusiasm and is valuable to the reader that is 300 or 900 words is more important!

That being said if you have an idea for a really long post, try breaking it up into to a series—like this one.

Value of Content to the Reader

Quality first, SEO second. Provide information and text that will make the readers lives easier, teach them something or entertain them. They will return and read a blog post that has engages their interest, makes them laugh or teaches them something before they will return because you used appropriate key words.

Let's just get out in the open right now: Playing to the Google Bot or other search engine crawler is OKAY as long as you're doing it with honest intentions. Those honest intentions may be to provide quality information on a subject, offer your goods and/or services, or just to be read because you need the attention. That's all fine, homey or homette.

However, if you are writing ONLY for the search engines in an attempt to drive traffic to your site and upon arrival you have poorly written content, a sloppy page, zero media, and your only intent is to gain more and more views—then that is NOT OKAY. And to be honest, people are gonna' figure you out real quick anyway and it will most likely result in few repeat visits AND YOUR COMPLETE AND UTTER DEMISE!

SAK (Searchable, Applicable Keywords)

I like "SAK" and since everyone else in this business seemed to have their own little term in their arsenal, I wanted one too. Hopefully, it's original.

Searchable Key words: Most of the time when people don't use searchable keywords it is from lack of experience. For instance, a military history site whose blog content varies greatly may want to ensure they are using the words: "military history", "Army history", and NOT the more specific keywords like "902^nd BN, A Company, 3^rd Platoon roll call" as their MAIN KEYWORDS.

"Army history" and "military history" are what people will search for when looking for a wealth of knowledge on the subject, say for a school project or a little book research.

That isn't to say that your "902^nd BN, A Company, 3^rd Platoon roll call" shouldn't be in there! There will be times when people search for the more specific but those people will be far less than the broader search terms.

But let's face it: How many sites out there are going to be about the military and its history? A lot I would imagine. Pick alist of keywords that you want to use. Below is an example of this sites keyword break down:

Keyword 1 Keyword 2 Keyword 3

Blog writer services

Content writing professional

Article freelancer business

Website humorous casual

That’s a pretty good amount of keywords but with them I can create long-tail keywords of 3-5 popular terms that, when linked together, actually rank better on SERPs(Search Engine Results Pages)

Blog writing services, Professional article writing business, Professional article writer with a humorous tone, humorous content writing services, etc… You get the drift.

Usually by utilizing long-tail keywords the site is aiming to become more specific and target a narrower portion of search terms. Once your site is narrowed in on an audience the traffic will increase as long as your subject is not too obscure. If that's the case you do a measurement of your SEO campaign and do another round of keyword research.

Applicable keywords are sometimes an issue for the novice blog writer or content writer but unfortunately, in a lot of cases, this will be done purposely to draw attention to the site because something is "trending". As an example:

When Osama Bin Laden was killed I was trolling the internet and chose a site that had popped up in a search engine and it was actually a pretty good article. However, imbedded in the article, were a bunch (and I mean a bunch) of links to a body building blog that was pushing a plethora of supplements. Well, I don't dig that and neither should you. Make the entire scope of your website content searchable, applicable to your niche, and worth reading. I can no longer find the article or site so either the guy/gal failed and gave up or he now sleeps with the cyber-fishes as a result of a Google Mob Hit.

A business website or a person's blog needs rich content that is original. I 'm pretty sure that you've probably read a couple of articles, blogs, and advertisements that say that same exact thing. Usually, from what I have seen though, the same people don't effectively explain why that is so important.

Good Content entices a call to action

We've all had the same experience so let's just use a simple example. Try typing the words "coloring pages" into your search engine. The first few that come up are going to advertise the word "free" and that's always good for websites and businesses. It really is. There are so many similarities that it is kind of uncanny but it's true. Deciding to paint a room in your home or apartment and deciding what kind of content you want on your site require many of the same decisions that are made (or not) when choosing good content.

Deciding that you want to do it.

Hey, it isn't an easy decision no matter what you may think. Do you want to give blogging a chance? If so, why? Do you wanna' monetize or just vent? Do you really need another hassle in your life?

Choosing the colors.

Is your room going to be bright and cheery with open, sunlit windows or dark and calming with candle light? Same goes for the content of your page. What are you selling? What message are you trying to convey? You have to choose a niche or focus! Every site and writer has their own tone and style. Choose the one that you're comfortable with.

When is "paint day" and how much are you going to pay:

You want good-to- great stuff on the wall right? Else, no one will notice you did anything at all. You're willing to pay well for good and more for great. The same goes for your website content. Crap will bear maggots. Good will get results. Great will put you at number 1 on the search engine results page! (SERP!)

I guess it's a good question. Content writer, copy writer, ghost writer, article writer, and blog writer are all very common terms used today. Chances are that ten years ago you might not receive this type of question. With the huge rise in internet marketing, blog "stores", and regular old business websites it seems that everyone wants their very own. They are professionals, after all, true subject matter experts in producing written products that are particularly efficient for the internet.

A Writer, First and Foremost...

A content writer, in his or her soul, is simply another writer though. I can hear many freelancers out there right not "harumph"-ing as they read that last sentence. And they have a right. They pride themselves on their title of content writer, as they should. However, I guarantee that none will argue with this: A writer is a person who makes their living my stringing together thoughts, letters, words, sentences and paragraphs to construct text intended for reading by someone. Some writers will say that they don't care if their stuff is ever read. But they do.

...but with a specialty!

Content writers do have a specialty, though. They provide content, in most cases, for the internet. Many of them are again getting upset, they're yelling (inwardly or outwardly) "Hey, I do print stuff too!" And they do but I would wager that 90% of writers who are content writers actually do 90% of their writing for an online venue.
These are specialists. Make no mistake about it. Many content writers have such intrinsic knowledge of SEO (search engine optimization) that it will make your head spin. Key word density, white hat tactics, meta tags, subheadings and image tags. They are magic workers, these content writers. They can take a dull and dead website and with just the magic of a keyboard, a sharp mind, and research they will drive traffic, buyers, and fans to it.

Content Writers are Versatile

Versatility is an understatement, though. These highly intelligent, passion driven, internet sitting professionals are the genetically and technically enhanced chameleon of the writing world. How about this? They are the "Predator" of the writing world. Need a 25 word Facebook post with strong SEO features that drives fans to click "like"? Got it. Need a 500 word article that is informative and strategically peppered with words to keep people on a website for an hour? No probs. Oh, no? You just need a 300 word blog post about your Aunt May's apple pie recipe that makes the reader click on an obscure ad half way down the page that is selling apple seeds? Piece of cake!

Worker Bees

Content writers write content... and write it and write it. They do articles, operate blogs, run social media campaigns, produce newsletters, brochures, product designs and reviews. They also operate their own blogs and business sites. They drive traffic and customers to those sites by making sure that their sites are full of quality content for the same reason that people hire them to do it. To get business and gain popularity. Why Hire an Independent Freelancer Instead of A Content Mill?

First, I guess, we should define what a content mill is.

A content mill, or writing mill, is a slang term used by those in the freelance writing world to describe a company or website that provides very cheap website content. How much of a profit they make off of this and how low the pay is for the writers is a topic of some debate. Heated debate, at that!

Notice, I used the word "cheap" and not "affordable". Heck, I use the word affordable here in my services. Cheap, though, is cheap. No other way around it. You get what you pay for. Why should you care, though? Let's poke a little at the 3 main reasons.

Quality of Writing:

Am I an expert writer? I get paid to write but I don't think that qualifies. I don't think there are any expert writers. Everyone should continuously be learning and getting better. I do however have my specialties and my training in some areas have qualified me for what I would call expert status.

Truthfully, many of the writers for content mills are from countries where English is not the native tongue. Not all-surely not the majority- but many. This is pretty easy to notice in most cases. Also, though, many of those writers (the ones at content mills, that is) are not students of web writing or SEO (search engine optimization). This is paramount when trying to get the results for your business that you want.

Personal Attention:

Call me old fashioned, but I'd rather have my omelet made to order instead of pulled out of a freezer and micro-waved for a minute or two. What I mean is that if you want to be in constant contact with your writer than you should stay away from mills. It is true that some of these sites DO allow for internal messaging from client to writer and vice versa, but it is the most estranged relationship you could imagine. First, you are usually assigned a number by the website. So you contact "writer 212334" as "client 58930". You can't email, talk or skype. Nothing like that. It is forbidden by the company because a writer and client may realize they no longer need the middleman and that just isn't good for the bottom line.

Clear and Concise Instructions and Feedback:

With a content mill you get to add a job, write a job description that is around 500 characters and then hope the writer understands exactly what you want. Not good. Sure, you can internally message "writer 212334" but what if that guy or gal doesn't log in anytime soon? Maybe they like to do their work offline to avoid distraction.

Freelance writers are professionals. They limit distraction and have work schedules. You get their personal email and IM. Whenever you need to ask a question or order another job from that person their little smart phone vibrates, lights up and dings. You have their attention.

ALIBIS:

*Some content mills have good to great writers working for them.

*This writer is not above a mill. He just thinks that there is something to be said for professionalism and client "red carpet" treatment.

*Content mills DO HAVE an editing system in most cases. The worst will be fixed. You deserve the best, however!

The Little Yellow Baby and the Power of a Kiss

A couple of nights ago I was presented with a situation with one of my children where I was sure that she needed a hug and a kiss to feel better and as I often do when encountered with these situations I thought of the little yellow baby and a kiss I’ll never forget.
When I was nine years old I broke my arm. Some of you know the story already. Others don’t. I will relay the gist of the scenario quickly in order to embarrass myself yet again.
We were playing Star Wars. To be more specific we were re-enacting the final scene at the end of episode IV, the one where Han, Luke and Chewy are getting their medals. I had arrived to the make believe scene late as it were and all the male parts were taken so my friend playfully pushed me in the chest and said, “You can be Princess Leia!” The back of my foot caught on a small lip that resided at the top of a 3 foot wall, I fell backward and my elbow cracked down on the driveway. I stared down at my arm, angled awkwardly in the wrong direction and I noticed a small protrusion that hadn’t quite broken the skin but was sure as hell close to doing so. I pushed on it once with my finger and it slid back into my arm. It was at this time I felt it was appropriate to scream.
My friend’s father scooped me up, my mother was in the car after that and we went to the hospital. Them with a screaming kid in the back and me with a broken arm and a bruised ego from being injured while playing Princess Leia.
As luck would have it that day the fracture in my arm was a “clean” break. I thought it good when I heard the Doctor say that but he didn’t know at the time was that the sharp bone had sliced clean through the artery that carries blood to my arm and hand.
I was taken to Mass General in Boston for what I think was nine days while I underwent three surgeries and had the distinct possibility of losing my arm. Pity, pity…scary, scary!
It was just before one of these surgeries (and I am assuming it was at least the second operation because I already knew to be scared shitless of “pre-op”) that I met the little yellow baby.
I was in the hallway outside my room on the hospital bed where I had been wheeled and the nurse had something else to do at the time and left me there for a moment. My mother was there and she was taking a young mother who was holding a little yellow baby. The babe’s skin was tinged yellow, the whites of his eyes were the shade of slightly dehydrated urine. I was crying quietly and tears were streaming down my cheeks as my mother conveyed to the yellow baby’s mother that I was going in for surgery and I was scared.
I remember the baby’s mother telling me that I’d be ok and being a bit dramatic that it only had helped my tears flow thicker.
At some point, in some way, the baby’s mother had decided that a kiss from her little, yellow baby would make me feel better and I remember her holding the baby close to my cheek and I just looking at his perfectly round if discolored eyes. He kissed me on the cheek; quickly, gently.
I immediately smiled. I felt better. I don’t know why but that little yellow baby made my day-so much so that it is one of the most vivid memories of my childhood. Perhaps it was because that even scared shitless and only nine years old I realized this baby’s issues were somewhat more severe than mine. I learned later about dialysis, kidney failure and jaundice.
Perhaps that kiss made me so happy because I knew that while adults and official people like nurses will always tell kids that “everything will be ok” even if it’s possible that it won’t be. Maybe it was because this little yellow baby didn’t know to lie to me or try to calm me-he was just kissing a boy because he felt it was the right thing to do.
I don’t know what the little yellow baby’s name was or what became of him (I do remember that it was a boy!). I would love to think that everything turned out well for him and his family but to be honest…he didn’t look well at the time.
But I’ll never forget the little yellow baby.
And he came back to my thoughts the other day as my eldest daughter cried in front of me and I hugged her and kissed a couple of times on the top of the head. I told her it would be alright and that she’d get over it. It didn’t quite have the same effect on my daughter as the little yellow baby’s kiss had on me when I was a boy but then I remembered…
I was an adult now. I was clumsy with my emotions as it is let alone in this situation where a heart is broken.
It is our need to talk and lecture at young people that ruins our credibility with them, I realized. As adults we sometimes feel the need to impart wisdom when it is not needed. We often jump to young people’s protection by wanting to fortify them with positive words whether they are the truth or not. My daughter isn’t stupid. My kiss wasn’t going to stop the hurt. She would feel it the next day and for a long time after. It would happen again in her life.
Sometimes we just need to shut up and be a little yellow baby.
