The Rural

A friend of mine recently pointed me to an astonishingly good post by Emma Mallinen – a Finnish name, if we've ever heard one — on her blog, 77.GoldFishTiger.com, for an incredible Nordic cocktail called "The Rural" (vs. "The Cosmopolitan").

A Rural involves:

2.5 cl Finlandia vodka
2 cl lingonberry liqueur
1/2 lime
dash of raspberry soda

Mix ingredients over ice, strain into chilled glass rimmed in sugar and garnished with lime and strawberry.

Benny Andersson's Swedish Royal Wedding Song

A new choral song by noted Swedish composer Benny Andersson (yes, that Benny Andersson), Vilar glad. I din famn (Resting blissfully in your arms), was premiered at the recent wedding of Sweden's Crown Princess Victoria to Daniel Westling. The melody is set to lyrics by Swedish poet Kristina Lugn and was commissioned especially for the wedding by the Swedish Royal Court. Duvemåla hage (Duvelmåla meadow) from Andersson's opera, Kristin från Duvemåla, was also performed during the festivities.

The wedding did not get broad coverage worldwide due to disagreements between the Swedish and foreign news outlets. Fortunately, someone made this clip of the song available on YouTube and added subtitles in Swedish and English.

The piece is, as you would expect, beautiful. It is particularly lovely when one understands that the couple planned their wedding to reflect the midsummer season colors and light.

Decorah farm helps Norway preserves world's plants

Since February 2008, the Svalbard Global Seed Vault in Norway has preserved seeds for the world so that in case of a catatrophic event, there will be hopes of replanting necessary crops and plants for future generations.

Seed Savers Exchange – also based in Decorah, IA — recently shipped a number of their own seeds to be stored in the vaults at Svalbard. This interesting video report from KTTC-TV is about their work and how they are preserving it.
