Our standard APN package, which offers secure remote connectivity and static IP addressing has proven to be a popular service, but client demand for the addition of monitoring and management has led us to develop and integrate the new Smart monitoring service into that offering.

Users will now be able to view device-specific reports and receive custom alarms via e-mail, SMS or other channels. The service can also provide diagnostics and statistics that can be used to streamline monitoring and maintenance of large installations of wireless devices, ultimately lowering cost of ownership.

Despite recent advances, GSM data technologies continue to receive a ‘bad rap’ as being slow and costly and suffering from severe ‘availability issues’. This perception has resulted in fixed-line technologies like ADSL continuing to be viewed as the better connectivity option in most cases. Even though DSL deployment is slow by comparison, it is seen as the only option that meets the connectivity requirements of most users, namely availability and speed.

But with GSM data transfer speeds rocketing off the charts, even compared to ADSL, and availability never a problem in major centres, the landscape is dramatically changing. From 2007 onwards wireless technologies have been offering vastly superior speeds compared to DSL. And with operators rolling out newer technologies such as HSPA+ and LTE, speeds of up to 150Mbps download and 100Mbps upload will soon be possible. Future implementations go far beyond that, with LTE supporting a theoretical download speed of one Gigabit per second, completely changing the way we think about wireless communication, or communication in general.

The graph below shows how over time ADSL speeds has remained almost constant compared to GSM, and gives an indication of where future GSM standards are heading. The question is, will you continue to be led by perception or take advantage of these truly amazing advances?

This service will provide a user the ability to view device specific reports and to perform maintenance procedures remotely via a web interface.
Smart Monitor, developed in South Africa by Trinity Telecomms, is a web-based telemetry monitoring solution designed specifically for service providers and integrators who need to monitor multiple devices for multiple customers. It provides diagnostics and statistics for streamlining the monitoring, maintenance and billing effort required for a large installed base of wireless devices, ultimately lowering cost of ownership.

In the case of the Multenet range of routers, reports such as current active interfaces, firmware version, data sent and received and location can all be accessed via a web interface. Support for SIM swap, reboot and firmware upgrade will also be available in future.

Customer demand met with 15 times the upload speed, at lower cost.

Multenet Technologies (Pty) Ltd. today announced the launch of its new dual-SIM HSUPA Router – a 3G router supporting 3G, GPRS, EDGE, HSDPA and now HSUPA.

Phil Blain, Multenet’s marketing director, says customer demand for higher bandwidth has been greatly exceeded with the new router.

“High-Speed Upload Packet Access allows uploads of 15 times the rate of previous technologies. With HSDPA, a theoretical upload speed of 384Kbps was possible, while HSUPA allows 5.76Mbps (5760Kbps),” he explains.

Blain says Multenet came to the idea for the HSUPA Router when customers asked for a facility to transfer large amounts of data, such as real-time video streaming. Applications such as surveillance made the upload portion of the bandwidth configuration especially critical.

To make it even more attractive, the latest router costs 45% less than its predecessor, the HSDPA variety.

And in addition, Multenet expedited the issue of connectivity, including the steps involved in signing up with ISPs and obtaining SIM cards for routers, and the technically challenging exercise of communicating point-to-point across cellular networks.

Both these issues were resolved with the launch of Multenet’s Private APN, a private network specifically designed for Multenet clients. Multenet Private APN clients receive SIM cards with statically assigned IP addresses upon sign-up, and upon activation are immediately able to communicate point-to-point across the cellular network.

Finally, says Blain, the router comes packed with features that make it a secure and reliable connectivity device for both small business and large corporates.

Popular features include:

Secure Dual-SIM with hidden tray

High upload speeds with HSUPA

Ease of configuration through Web interface, and

Hassle-free upgrades

Established in 2004, ConnectNet is a leader in GSM Data (GPRS/EDGE/3G/HSDPA) service provision, with blue chip clients in the retail, financial, security, telemetry, healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors.

Multenet, a South African manufacturer of GSM Cellular routers has provided Connectnet with GSM communications equipment which inludes the Connectnet range of Mobile and Broadband routers for the past two years as part of the Connectnet services offering.

The routers, manufactured on an OEM agreement, with added ConnectNet specific functionality, has proven to be a solid and reliable platform for the range of services on offer by Connectnet.

The ConnectNet service allows applications to connect to remote host computers provided that such host computers are connected to the GSM Data, X.25, Frame Relay or IP (Internet) networks. The service allows for product to product connectivity (Mobile Router to Mobile Router) and cross product connectivity (T-Pad – Mobile Router) when required and is available wherever the cellular networks have GSM Data coverage.

The Connectnet Mobile Routers are fully managed and are supplied with two cellular network SIM cards for redundancy purposes. The switching from one network to the other occurs automatically and is triggered in the event that our product loses connection with our servers and not only in the event where it loses radio connectivity to the GSM networks. The Mobile Router is also capable of monitoring a PPPOE link and will automatically dial up and re-establish connectivity (via the GSM Data network) in the event that the PPPOE link goes offline.

What sets the ConnectNet Mobile Router apart from its competitors:

Pricing – very competitive and flexible tariffs

Fully managed system allows for

Remote diagnostics

Remote system configuration changes

Bandwidth usage monitoring and management

Excessive bandwidth usage notifications

System redundancy

multiple secure hosting facilities;

Multiple Private APNs connected to the GSM Data Networks; and

Dual SIM and Automatic switchover in event of network failure (Core or Radio network)

Radius Servers, authenticate the connections, allowing for remote incoming connections and remote management.

Security

Integrated firewall on Mobile Router;

Fully managed and restricted core network firewall

If required, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) may be established;

Monitor and back up PPPOE links;

Additional functionality:

Dynamic Naming Services (DNS) client; and

Port forwarding, including Nating (Masquerading).
