About The Cincinnati Beacon

The Cincinnati Beacon was founded in December, 2005 by Jason Haap (The Dean of Cincinnati), and Andrew Warner. After a technical malfunction plagued Haap’s original blog (deanofcincinnati.com), Haap and Warner decided to combine their efforts—hoping to get other bloggers on board. The site’s slogan “Where Divergent Views Collide” was meant as humorous irony because a “beacon” near an ocean shore should prevent “collisions.”

      <dc:subject>Cincinnati</dc:subject>

Soon, Haap and Warner were joined by Justin Jeffre, multi-platinum recording artists turned political activist. Over time, Warner moved from Cincinnati to Columbus, where he now pursues street magic as opposed to political or media activism.

Haap and Jeffre continued to grow The Beacon, even at one time turning it into a monthly newspaper.

For a while, their reporting staff included Chris Johnson, who went on (due in part to experience gained at The Beacon), to work for Brave New Films.

Another stalwart investigator has been Michael Earl Patton, who writes regularly as well. His work gained him the title “Chief Analyst,” given the manner with which he delves into public data and records.

The Beacon is an entirely volunteer project. Meager annual fund-raising just covers the cost of hosting the website, and its writers are not paid. The team is driven by a desire to provide coverage of primarily local issues that would otherwise be ignored by area media.

Black Box Voting on Chain of Custody

Editor’s Note: The material below is from Black Box voting. The issue reminded us of an old video we captured with Stephan Skirtz. He made waves in the 2004 blogosphere when he captured a photograph of a red pickup truck with a George W. Bush bumper sticker, and a guy handling uncounted ballots in a dark parking lot with no one around.

      <dc:subject>Cincinnati</dc:subject>

Videos from Black Box Voting

WHAT’S IN THE VIDEOS:

1. Election Reality TV - BUTCH & HOPPY CHASE Part I (split into two parts—here, and here—for YouTube length limits), The Butch & Hoppy Chase begins with Susan Pynchon and Bev Harris’s initial foray into the field following a ballot transport van. This video raises questions, many of which will be answered in subsequent Election Reality TV videos. Some answers will be troubling and will spur reforms.

2. Election Reality TV - PROCEDURAL FAILURES

Black Box Voting is focusing on a nationwide “election chain of custody” project throughout 2008. We have adjusted communications format to focus on video, because it is getting more 15-30 year old citizens involved.

Collection of evidence through video, ESPECIALLY WHEN SEVERAL CITIZENS FAN OUT WITH CAMERAS TO WATCHDOG A SINGLE ELECTION EVENT AND SHARE FOOTAGE, will be of crucial importance in election 2008. Take note and follow suit.

Click the links below for the new videos. Most of the issues being uncovered our “ELECTION REALITY TV” series apply to MANY STATES, not just the state used to illustrate.

Higher quality versions are posted on Black Box Voting - http://www.blackboxvoting.org (click “Forums, choose “Document Archive” scroll to “Videos”) if you need to download for meetings. Please be considerate of our bandwidth. Please download ONLY when needed and use YouTube links for casual viewing and sharing.

WHAT’S TO COME:

An analysis of blow-ups of these video shots, examined frame by frame, has revealed new information that we believe will be highly significant for fraud prevention, particularly in an environment of paper ballots with manual spot checks. Findings originating from these videos will prove to be critically important to any new audit bill legislation, which MUST include rigorous chain of custody controls.

The information in these videos has led us to a “theory of the crime” scenario for New Hampshire. This doesn’t prove there was a crime, but (pending completion of our current testing) will show that the New Hampshire presidential primary could have been stolen, even on a large scale.

New Hampshire is currently the most auditable state in the nation, with 100 percent hand recounts available for any candidate, at reasonable prices, as well as good observation and videotaping rights for chain of custody examinations. THIS TRANSPARENCY SHOULD BE RETAINED!

However, there were breaks in the chain of custody in New Hampshire, such that there is no reason to believe that the ballots counted in the recount were the same as the ballots cast by the voters.

And as for the many locations that still use paperless DREs or fail to audit chain of custody and procedural safeguards, as they say in New York, “fahgeddaboudit.” There is no reason whatsoever to trust those elections.

Our work continues on chain of custody in several states.

NEW HAMPSHIRE CHAIN OF CUSTODY BREAKDOWN

The “seals” are not seals. The “chain of custody” is not a chain of custody. Ballots being transported by the “state police” are actually transported by Butch and Hoppy, who are not employed by the state police. Butch and Hoppy’s real names are not really Butch and Hoppy.

IN NEW HAMPSHIRE, IT’S ALL IN PLAIN SIGHT.

The chain of custody in the New Hampshire recount is using a false seal, and on at least one night, officials chose to leave the ballots out of the ballot vault.

We tailed ballot transport guys “Butch” and “Hoppy”, captured ballot footage in the vault, and grilled public officials to get the real answers, which were sometimes lies and often evasive. More to come, new clips will be posted on the main page at http://www.blackboxvoting.org

On this episode of Focus, local green advocates Howard Konicov and Justin Jeffre talk about how the average citizen can help make Cincinnati a more healthy place to live and Brian Garry, who, for the past twenty-three years, has operated a construction and building company called Green City Ecostruction that specializes in green materials and construction explains how home builders and construction companies can include green materials when constructing and refurbishing their buildings.

SEIU - Justice for Janitors: Dena Smith

Here is the story of Dena Smith, an area janitor trying to raise her three boys by going to work at a job everyday that won’t give full time hours or health benefits.

<dc:subject>Cincinnati, Cincinnati Blog, labor, Political Blog, Politics</dc:subject>

Here is a press statement sent out by the SEIU:

Cincinnati faith leaders say ‘Janitors’ fight is our fight’

Roundtable discussion highlights deepening economic divide, impact on neighborhoods

Cincinnati – On the heels of a historic strike authorization vote by janitors who clean the majority of Cincinnati’s commercial office space, faith leaders are holding a roundtable discussion to talk about the relevance of the janitors’ fight for some of the city’s poorest neighborhoods. The roundtable discussion includes faith leaders from Avondale, Bond Hill, and Walnut Hills —financially struggling neighborhoods where many janitors reside—and highlights the implications of the growing economic and social divide for the future of both the city’s economy and the area’s most vulnerable communities.

“The janitors’ fight impacts every neighborhood, every block, in our city,” says Mother Paula Jackson, Rector of the Church of Our Savior. “Everyone, black, white, and Latino, should look on our neighbors as ‘another self,’ a person who needs to live with dignity.”

Cincinnati janitors—the majority of whom are African American—face the same challenges that Cincinnati now faces—increasing frustration by working people over a widening income gap that is stifling families’ efforts to lift themselves out of poverty. A recent analysis of Cincinnati census figures by SEIU shows the 10 highest-poverty zip codes in Cincinnati are 55.3 percent African American. In contrast, the 10 lowest-poverty zip codes are just 2.1 percent African American.

Despite being home to Fortune 500 companies and other major corporations with combined revenues of $177 billion annually—including Fifth Third Bank, Procter and Gamble, Macy’s, Convergys Corp, and Western & Southern—the region’s high number of low-wage, no benefit jobs is increasingly stifling working families’ ability to lift themselves out of poverty. The more than 1,200 janitors who clean Cincinnati’s office space are paid as little as $28 a day with no health or other benefits.

Janitors have been negotiating with their employers—cleaning companies ABM, Jancoa, Professional Maintenance of Cincinnati, Aetna Building Maintenance, Scioto Corp, NSG, OneSource, and GSF—since early March over increased pay, access to health care, and more work hours. Janitors voted Saturday to authorize their Bargaining Committee to call a strike if necessary in the coming weeks, closing out a week characterized by workers’ increasing frustration over their inability to lift themselves out of poverty with their current low wages and lack of access to health care. Days earlier, four janitors were arrested at Fifth Third Bank as they appealed to the corporate giant to support good jobs with health care for the city’s hard-working families.
