I have 4 pairs of Little Dish Shoes to giveaway on behalf of Sainsbury’s Bank car insurance as part of the Sainsbury’s Bank Family Blogger Network.

Little Dish have partnered this year with Barnardo’s on their Big Toddle, which is an exciting ‘mini’ sponsored walk for toddlers. Now in its 16th year, it is the biggest fundraising event in the UK for under 5s and already attracts an amazing half a million children. All the money that Barnardo’s receives from this event goes towards helping some of the UK’s most vulnerable under 5s. This years theme is Super hero’s. When I asked Noah what he would dress up as, he said Captain Hook – I tried to convince him he was not a Super hero, but he will not hear a bad word said against Captain Hook!

If you want to organise your own Big toddle or see if there is one you can take part in near your area, just register here!

In order to promote their partnership with Barnardo’s, Little Dish are selling special packs of Chicken and Butternut Squash Pie with a pair of toddling shoes for just £5. The limited edition packs are available in Sainsbury’s from Wednesday 23rd May for 10 days only – that means it all ends on the first June! All proceeds from the sale will go to Barnardo’s. Now tell me how this is not firstly a bargain (a meal and a pair of shoe for a fiver!) but also it is supporting charity. To me it is a no brainer and I think you need to be setting off to Sainsbury’s in the next ten minutes (just finish reading this post first!)

The Limited edition shoes are also available in three sizes (small 5-6) (medium 6-7) and (Large 8-9) – that means I can kit all three of mine out for the summer for £15 and have helped a great cause, plus after going on a nice toddle I can feed my hungry children with their yummy dinner!

Now to the giveaway!

I have four pairs of these Little Dish toddling shoes to offer to you! So if you’d like to take part in the draw, you’ll need to:

log in to Rafflecopter (see the widget below) with your Facebook account or your email address and…

…enter the draw up to 3 times by leaving a blog post comment, tweeting about the giveaway or ‘liking’ the blog post

The more times you enter the better your chances of winning.

The winner will be chosen via Rafflecopter (which uses random.org) and announced on this page. Entrants must state the required size.

But be quick as this competition is only open until Tuesday 29th June!

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Good Luck.

x

Disclosure: I will be sent one pair of toddling shoe to review at a later date.

I love to read. I adore literature. It was the only thing I ever really excelled at in school and I passed with an A* can you believe? Weirdly I decided to go on and study Science at University and so trained as a Science Teacher, but secretly there is an English teacher desperate to get out! It is a classic case of, ‘Do you teach your Love or do you teach your Passion?’ I teach my passion in the fear that I never wanted to lose my love.

I used to devour books one by one. I would choose reading over TV any moment of the day. Now reading takes an effort. Three children are exhausting as you all well know, and so maintaining concentration by the end of the day can be hard. Sometimes I can read the same page three times because every time I have got to the bottom of the page I have forgotten what I have read and have to start again! So I have taken to reading in the bath and I have made a rule to read one chapter every night to get some consistency back. This rule appears to be working and I am back into my swing of reading.

I am currently reading One Fine Day (I have not see the film, and rarely do before I have read the book) but that is not what I am going to tell you about as I have not finished yet. The book I am going to talk about is A Thousand Splendid Suns. A superbly written book by Khaled Housseini. It portrays the stories of two women initially leading very different lives in Afghanistan and then shows how these two women lives come together due to unexpected circumstances, and how they have to pull together, break the rules and develop a Mother and daughter style relationship in order to stay alive.

The book is truthful, emotive, hard-hitting in places but so real to the internal dialogue of a woman. I cannot begin to understand how a man managed to write it so succinctly and empathetically, because the thought processes are so apt of a female and nothing like how a man would react – I know we like to think we can be the same, but we do function in very different ways. He must have done his research.

I never understood the politics and history surrounding Afghanistan and to be honest would not pretend that I really do now. However it did open a window to my ignorance and lack of knowledge. It was interesting to see that from the way the book was written, the people of Kabul did not really understand the politics either. It seemed to me they would support whomever it was that would stop the suffering and war. I found it eye-opening that the people cheered the Taliban coming into power as they thought it would bring new change. Indeed it did, but not in a good way. Women were basically treated like second class citizens and any form of joy was forbidden including dancing and singing. Women were not allowed to be educated, they were not really allowed to be seen (unless accompanied by a man who had to be family) or heard and had to go to all female hospitals which never got any supplies. Can you imagine having a C-section without any form of epidural or pain relief? The thought is incomprehensible.

Despite the serious nature of the book, the story flowed with joy and ease. It was amazing to witness (through a novel writers eyes) a flowering relationship, courage, strength, and the lengths a Mother will go to ensure safety of her children. It was inspiring. It made me smile, it made me weep, it made me angry, it made my heart bleed – I have not read a book that has done that in such a long time and it was a pure joy. I know it has been out a while and I had expectations that it would be good as I has previously read The Kite Runner, another excellent book by the same author.

It is definitely on my top ten to read list!

I am handing this book over to Kara from Chelsea Mamma who I know will enjoy this!

An exciting twitter competition is being launched on the 27th May run by @VolvoCarUK.

Every hour a family themed prized with be given away which will include fabulous experiences like adventure weekends and digital camera!

Volvo prides itself on looking after the Family as a car manufacturer and pays attentions to key details like safety and comfort. We all know how hard travel as a family with kids can be. I am constantly wishing there were easier ways to get three toddlers safety into a car and that is even before they are strapped in and seated!

Driving has never been something that has come naturally to me (six *cough* ahem tests) but I passed finally at 24. I have never owned my own car and have always shared my husbands and since having children I have always been more cautious behind the wheel.

We know that the moment you start engine you are effectively in charge of a powerful machine that has the ability to cause damage, so any means to help to protect the safety of those in the car and those outside is of key importance. The Volvo V60 has groundbreaking technology incorporated into its system that help it to monitor traffic, pedestrians and can even apply the brakes to slow you down to avoid any unwanted collisions keeping you and your family and any families walking around safe.

Not only is it safe and has great ergonomics to seat a family of five but a large boot space and lots of storage as well! We know that when we travel as a family is not usually light and that things like bikes and roof racks need to be added which can all be accessorised on the V60.

So how do you get involved in this new Volvo campaign.

Well firstly sign yourself up to twitter and follow @VolvoCarUK

Watch out for them asking questions throughout the day…for example

Where was your best Family Holiday?

Then tweet your answer using the hashtag #V60getaway. (Don’t forget you only have 140 characters!)

So my answer would be…

The Lake District. You don’t mind the weather as puddle splashing is awesome plus Beatrix Potter,

Fudge and Stunning views! #V60getaway

Wishing you lots of luck and let me know if you win! I shall be playing on the day too.

We are having Jubilee festivities in two weeks time to celebrate the Queens Diamond Jubilee and I have already discussed food and so now we are onto outfits! We are all going to have to wear red, blue and white. BB and I decided that to stay in true Royal spirit he needed a crown so we set on a mission to make one.

I found the most brilliant site called Play at Powerhouse that have a crown template that just makes life so much easier.

The template comes in two halves so we printed one half onto red paper and one onto blue.

We cut them out and stuck them together onto a piece of card and then cut that out again.

BB then enjoyed himself decorating with blue glitter, stars, braiding and sequins.

Lets just say he got a little over enthusiastic with the glitter and we were blue and sparkly for quite a while, but I think the finished effect was worth it.

We finished it off by cutting a strip of card from a cereal box and wrapping it around his head to check the size and then fastening it with sticky tape.

He is very excited about taking his crown to Granny and Grandpa’s house.

We are celebrating the Jubilee in style this year and actually having a garden party at my in-laws, where we will be expected to wear red, blue and white, and shall eat yummy food, get merry and be silly!

Last week I was invited to a fabulous cookery masterclass hosted by Tesco Real Food, the in-store food magazine that give loads of recipe ideas and cookery tips. The session was held at The Cookery School at Little Portland Street in London and led by the lovely Rosalind who gave us a cookery methods including brilliant cookery tips, like the secrets to making the perfect custard. The trick is putting some of the sugar into the cream and boiling it until it is really hot and adding it to the egg yolk and rest of the sugar! Anyhow I digress…

Observing the custard making process!

The aim of this cookery Mater class was to teach us how to cook a selection of recipes that can be found in the current magazine to celebrate the Jubilee. They are all recipes that are straight forward, with simple preparation and can actually be prepared in advance so that you can enjoy the party yourself.

The recipes up to cook were as follows…

Chicken Tikka Drummers - made by me and even though I made them were a huge hit!

Coronation Coleslaw - made by Tara who blogs at Hanwell Nest

English Breakfast Quiche - made by Utterly Scrummy Food for Families

and finally

Three Pea and Wensleydale Salad - made by and Fleur who blogs at Homemade By Fleur (This was my favourite and I am not a salad fan, but I could have eaten the lot of this, and Wensleydale cheese is to die for!)

Delicious!

The session started with a nice glass of champagne, was put down to concentrate on the cooking (hiccup! Of course) and finished with our own indoor street party and tasting session of all the food we had cooked up! Delicious.

Enjoying the final product!

I felt so lucky to get the chance to attend an event where I learnt so much, so a big thank you to Tesco and it is always lovely to meet other bloggers.

Tesco currently have a competition running with lots of great prizes up for grabs including a weekend cookery course for two at Ashburton Cookery School. All you have to do to enter is if you have your own inspirational Street Party Recipe then upload it to Customer Recipes on the Tesco Real Food website.

Hello – welcome to Family Frolics

The children and I were invited to The Marks and Spencer beach clean up last week. We were very grateful that the weather was not only dry but fairly warm. I decided to take the twins out of pre-school for the morning and persuade my mother in law to come with us to help me as I thought it would have a beneficial message to the children, as we use the beach a lot.

Protecting our Marine life

The day was not quite what we expected and in fact was not wholly suitable for toddlers, however we tried to make the best of the situation.

BB (Big Brother) was given a litter picker which he felt was his fabulous new toy and we had a bin bag and he really quite enjoyed trying to find litter, pick it up and put it in the bin bag. The twins started off well but as they did not have their own litter pickers the novelty wore off fairly quickly.

Loving the litter picker!

We talked about how litter is very bad on a beach, as not only can it be smelly and look horrible, but it can be very dangerous to animals, especially if they eat it. BB seemed to really grasp this concept well. I was also able to reinforce this at home by using the ‘School of fish‘ website which has some fun games and great resources on there including an A-Z of sea creatures.

A BBQ was provided but 2 hours of beach cleaning for 2 year olds was too much, and the wind was too strong on the seafront and whipping sand in their faces. You know how hard it can get with hungry, whiney toddlers and so we had to call it a day early.

Exhausted kiddies!

I do however feel that BB particularly did get an idea that it is helpful to look after the beach and despite the session not really being as equipped for children as it should have been, but strongly feel that the campaign and the cause was good. The Marine conservation Society do an awesome job at protecting our beaches and marine life and introducing our children to the idea of keeping a world healthy can only be a good thing.
