Adding to my collection of Photos and Wallpapers of Mumbai here is an exclusive treat for my readers. I recently got an opportunity to visit a friend’s place which is on the 35th floor of a high rise building in Mumbai from where I saw this aerial view of Mumbai and couldn’t believe what I saw. Who could imagine that amidst the concrete jungle that Mumbai is known as, lies a beautiful patch of green and water bodies. These pictures are an aerial view from a high rise building (35th floor) of the very concrete and very cramped-for-space Lokhandwala area in Mumbai. Who could believe that just beyond all those buildings lies a beautiful expanse of greenery and water bodies. Take a look and get amazed. I was.

Where is Mumbai

Mumbai, or as it was called Bombay previously, has been in the news for various reasons, some good, some not so good. Especially after the 26/11 terror attacks on Mumbai, the city have been in the news worldwide for the wrong reasons. But nonetheless, Mumbai is probably the most sort after metro city after New York.
Situated in the western coastal belt of India, Mumbai is a part of a state of India named, Maharashtra. In fact, Mumbai is the capital city of Maharashtra as also the financial capital of India.
Almost all the major countries are connected to Mumbai through various flights running to and fro from Mumbai.
So reaching Mumbai is as easy as calling your friendly travel agent and asking him to book a ticket to Mumbai. Mumbai is a transit spot for the most famous location in India, GOA. If you want to go to Goa, you will have to land in Mumbai first.

Mahalakshmi Temple Situated in South Mumbai

Location: Bhulabhai Desai Rd., Breach Candy, Mumbai
History: Built in 1758.
Transport: Train to Bombay Central or Mahalakshmi Station or Taxi or Car. No Auto Rickshaws are available in this part of Mumbai. (Click here to Check out Road Maps from various locations to Mahalakshmi Temple)
Tips: Take offerings of Lotus Flowers as Mata Lakshmi loves Lotus flowers. They are abundantly available outside the Mandir from where you can buy.

As you reach near the Mahalaxmi Mandir at Bhulabhai Desai Road, Breach Candy, Mumbai, you will see a long flight of stairs which you have to climb in order to reach the inside of the temple. These steps are so famous for anyone who is a Bollywood fan because it has been shown in many a Bollywood movie, most famously in the Vidhu Vinod Chopra movie, Parinda starring Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff and Madhuri Dixit.

Situated right on the edge of the Arabian Sea, the Mahalakshmi Temple has an interesting piece of history behind it.
The construction of the temple is somehow connected to the building of the Hornby Vellard. The Hornby Vellard was a project to build a causeway which would connect the seven islands of Bombay into a single island with a deep natural harbour. But due to a wall collapse the project was delayed. That was the time when the chief engineer for the project, Prabhu Pathare, dreamt of the statue of the Mataji in the sea and sure enough, upon searching they found the idol of Mata Lakshmi.
Thus, a temple was built for the idol in the year 1785 which came to be known as the famous Mahalakshmi Temple of Mumbai. (It is believed that Mata Laxmi herself came into the engineer's dream and instructed him to build this temple)
The Mahalakshmi temple is dedicated to Mata Laxmi, the divine consort of Lord Vishnu. Also known as the Goddess of wealth, many a people believe that praying at the Mahalakshmi temple will make their wishes come true.
The temple celebrates a lot of festivals especially Navratri when people from far and wide come to participate in the festivities.

In a small city within a city called Ambernath which is not so far away from Mumbai (Bombay), lies a marvel of ancient times- The Shiv Mandir. It is also known as the Ambreshwar Shiva Temple, located about 2 km from Ambernath Railway Station (East). The popular belief about this temple is that it was built by the Pandava brothers in one night during their vanvaas for sheltering themselves. It has been carved out of one single mass of rock and it is also said that they could not complete the structure and the roof was left to be made. We can see the proof of this even today as there is an open roof above the main area (Gabhara)where there is a Shiv Ling in the centre. Once you climb down about 20 steps to reach the Ghabara, you will be amazed to feel the vibrations and the peace and calm.
Although the official version suggests that this temple was constructed by Shikahara king, Chittaraja and later it was rebuilt by his son, Mummuni, the popular version of the Mahabharata is widely believed to be true by the people. This is also corroborated by the fact that there is a tunnel there which was used by the Pandavas to escape which is kilometers long and which lies shut and locked currently.
Mahashivratri and the Month Of Shravan are the times when this temple becomes extremely crowded with pilgrims coming in from various places around the country. The carvings on this temple are exquisite and are to be seen to be believed, although, lack of maintenance has somewhat damaged the structure now. But all in all, it is a pleasant experience. It is better to go by train to Ambernath and take an auto-rickshaw from there to the temple. If you are driving from Mumbai, then prepare for a long drive.

Ganeshpuri Temple Near Vajreshwari

About 2 km from Vajreshwari is Ganeshpuri. Here there is a Nityanand Ashram that was built in the memory of this great loin clothed sage who took Samadhi here over decades ago. Near the Ashram are three hot spring tanks. This Ashram is a marble and granite structure that has a highly peaceful ambience around it, best place for Yoga and Meditation. The river that runs behind the Ashram has a point called Agni Kund.

Things You Must Know About Ganesh Festival In Mumbai

The roads are only half-usable with the other half being lined with bamboo structures called pandals, the nights are peppered with loud sounds of old Hindi Music blaring from cheap amplifier speakers, the evenings are a chaotic amalgamation of various prayers being sung in the glory of God, each one different from the other, each one a different tone from the other, which transmits into a totally different sound any rock star would be proud of, by the time the sounds reach your ears. This more or less epitomizes the Ganpati Festival in Mumbai (Bombay).
These eleven days are the only time Mumbai turns into a different city, yet a most likable city. Lord Ganesha is called the God of new beginnings and people from all parts of India celebrate this festival with a lot of pomp and faith. Mumbai sees an influx of a more than a million people coming from outside to bask in the glory of Ganpati Bappa's blessings and also to view the different decorations by different mandals (Organizations). Each one tries to outdo the other in terms of the decoration especially. Some will have Ganpati Bappa seated on a snake, while some other might have The Lord playing a character from some mythological story and yet some other might even have the Ganpati idol made of gold.

Lokmanya Tilak started this festival in 1893, to defy the British who discouraged public gatherings and social meetings. Also Lokmanya Tilak wanted to dissolve the gap between Brahmins and non-brahmins. From that day till date, this festival has only grown in stature and is now celebrated in almost every city of India.

Just a few things you must keep in mind before venturing out to see the various pandals.
>>Try and avoid taking darshan of the various Ganpatis in the evenings because that is the time there will be a maximum number of crowds.
>>The 2nd, 5th, 7th and the 11th day are the days of immersion. The traffic during these days are chaotic and it is better advised that you do not venture out with your vehicle on these days.
>>At some famous Ganpati organizations, the queues can be serpentine. But there will always be an option where you pay a certain amount of money to get into the shorter line. Mostly this amount is not more than Rupees 50 but it can vary from pandal to pandal.
>>The biggest and famous Ganpatis are immersed at the Girgaum Chowpatti beach. This place has no place to even stand during the immersion day. Throngs of people wait in anticipation to see all the major Ganesh idols as they come in huge processions for the immersion.
>>There are a lot of organizations which have become very famous over the years. The Lalbaugcha Raja is one such mandal which attracts more than a crore rupees of donations every year and probably the longest queues ever seen to get a glimpse of the Raja as Ganeshji is fondly called by this mandal. A must visit Hot Spot during the Ganesh Festival in Mumbai.
>>There are many other famous mandals and then there are a few which are not so famous but are equally interestingly designed. Check around the areas you are residing or staying currently and chances are that you will find a Ganpati pandal just round the corner.
>>Avoid giving money to beggars. Instead buy them something to eat.
Most organizations are registered and have receipt books for donations made. You must make sure that you get a receipt when you make a donation so that any kind of corruption is discouraged. (Yes, there are people who actually are only thinking of making money in the name of God)
Lastly, ask Ganpati Bappa for his abundant blessings and have faith in his powers to bestow upon you every kind of glory, wealth and prosperity. He never fails.

How do I know if I have influenza A (H1N1)?
You will not be able to tell the difference between seasonal flu and influenza A (H1N1) without medical help. Typical symptoms to watch for are similar to seasonal viruses and include fever, cough, headache, body aches, sore throat and runny nose. Only your medical practitioner and local health authority can confirm a case of influenza A (H1N1). If they suspect any symptoms they will send your blood sample, throat swab and nasopharyngeal (nose to mouth) for testing to laboratories. Presently this facility is available only at certain specified government laboratories.

What are the warning signs?
In children, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
* Fast breathing or difficulty in breathing
* Bluish or gray skin colour
* Not drinking enough fluids
* Severe or persistent vomiting
* Not waking up or not interacting
* Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
* Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough

In adults, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
* Difficulty in breathing or shortness of breath
* Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
* Sudden dizziness
* Confusion
* Severe or persistent vomiting
* Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough

How do you catch H1N1 (swine) flu?
H1N1 virus appears to be transmitted the same way that seasonal flu spreads. Flu viruses are spread mainly from person to person through coughing or sneezing by people with influenza. Sometimes people may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

How can someone with the flu infect someone else?
Infected people can infect others right from day one even before they themselves develop any symptoms up to seven or more days after becoming sick. That means that one can pass on the infection to someone else before he/she even knows that he/she is sick, as well as while one is sick.

What can I do to protect myself from getting sick?
There is no vaccine available right now to protect against H1N1 (swine) flu. There are everyday actions that can help prevent the spread of germs that cause respiratory illnesses like influenza. Take these everyday steps to protect your health:
* Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
* Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
* Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread this way.
* Try to avoid close contact with sick people.
* If you get sick with influenza, you should stay at home and not go for work or school and limit contact with others to prevent them from getting infecting by you.
* Reduce the time spent in the crowded settings.
* Improve airflow in the living space by opening the windows and proper ventilation.
* Practice good health habits including adequate sleep, eating nutritious food, and keeping physically active.

Are there medicines to treat H1N1 (swine) flu?
Yes, use of oseltamivir (brand name Tamiflu?) or zanamivir (brand name Relenza ?) for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with these H1N1 (swine) influenza viruses. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that fight against the flu by keeping flu viruses from reproducing in your body. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. They may also prevent serious flu complications. For treatment, antiviral drugs work best if started soon after getting sick (within two days of symptoms).

What should I do if I get sick?
If you live in areas where people have been identified with new H1N1 flu and become ill with influenza-like symptoms, including fever, body aches, runny or stuffy nose, sore throat, nausea, or vomiting or diarrhoea, you should stay home and avoid contact with other people, except to seek medical care. If you have severe illness or you are at high risk for flu complications, contact your health care provider or seek medical care. Your health care provider will determine whether flu testing or treatment is needed. Antiviral drugs may reduce the symptoms and duration of illness, just as they do for seasonal influenza. They also may contribute to preventing severe disease and death. WHO is in touch with public health authorities and clinicians in affected countries and is gathering information about how effective the drugs are.

What about using a mask?
If you are not sick you do not have to wear a mask. If you are caring for a sick person, you can wear a mask when you are in close contact with the ill person and dispose of it immediately after contact, and clean your hands thoroughly afterwards. If you are sick and have to travel or be around others, cover your mouth and nose. Using a mask correctly in all situations is essential. Incorrect use actually increases the chance of spreading infection. Masks need to be N95 (WHO code) compliant.
