Bulk image format change using photoshop

This tutorial will go over how to Change format of multiple images at once using Photoshop. This is also known as Bulk image format change in Photoshop(bridge).

If you want to convert image from one format to another, Photoshop and Photoshop Tools allow you to do this in just few minutes. For doing this process you requires Photoshop File Browser (or Adobe Bridge in CS3 or higher).

1) Open Photoshop.

2) click on "FILE" menu.

3) Select "Browse in Bridge" option.
A new window will open.
In a "content" window select images you want to rename.

4) click on "Tool" Menu

5) Hover "Photoshop" Menu.
select "Image Processor" option.
A new window will open

6) Select various options as per requirement like
    Destination folder,
    Image type,
    Copyright info

7) Click on "Run" Button.

This tutorial will go over how to Rename multiple images at once using Photoshop. This is also known as Batch Rename Files in Photoshop.

If you want to rename a series of files -- such as several pictures from a digital camera. Photoshop and Photoshop Tools allow you to do this in just few minutes. For doing this process you requires Photoshop File Browser (or Adobe Bridge in CS3 or higher).

Opening Gmail in basic HTML view

have been stuck on a low bandwidth internet connection and your Gmail won't just open. It just loads and shows you a blank page. This happens when you are accessing gmail from a low bandwidth connection and/or a crappy PC. Gmail just shows loading for second time and man it is stuck. The remedy at that moment is to switch to the basic HTML view and check your mail. But what if it doesn't show you "Switch to basic HTML view" option after loading!!!

So here's the remedy. Sign into gmail and let it load. If it fully loads well and good but if it takes time or gets stuck just paste the following code into the address bar

http://mail.google.com/mail/?ui=html&zy=d

and the Gmail opens in basic html view. Some features like chat may be disabled but You'll have to suffice with that.

Secret options in Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Opera

Today I m going to tell you Secret options in Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Opera Browsers.
All these 3 browsers come with a secret page which allows you to enable or disable many advanced settings which are not generally available to configure from browser Options window.

1) Google Chrome :-
If you are a Google Chrome user, you can access a secret configuration page using following steps:

1. Type about:flags or chrome://flags in Chrome's addressbar and press Enter. It'll open the advanced configuration page.
2. This page contains many experimental features and other advanced tweaks which can be enabled or disabled by clicking on Enable or Disable link given below the option description.
3. As soon as you enable or disable an option, a new "Relaunch Now" button automatically appears at bottom which can be used to restart Google Chrome to take effect.

If you want the complete list of pages available on Chrome,
Use about:about or chrome://about
It gives ALL settings pages available for Chrome.

2) Mozilla Firefox :-
If you are a Mozilla Firefox user, you can access a similar secret configuration page using following steps:

1. To access this page simply type about:config in Firefox's addressbar and press Enter. It'll ask for confirmation, click on I'll be careful, I promise! button.
2. The page contains 3 types of preferences:
* String
* Boolean
* Integer
3. You can double-click on the desired preference and change its value.

"About:config" page allows you to tweak lots of hidden settings of Mozilla Firefox. You can enable or disable many features and options on the fly.

3) Opera :-
If you are a Opera user, you can access a similar secret configuration page using following steps:

1. Type opera:config in Opera's addressbar and press Enter. It'll open Opera Preferences Editor page.
2. Here you can tweak various settings and features in Opera.

Note:- There are many more similar secret pages in Opera. Just type opera: in Opera's addressbar and a drop-down list will automatically appear showing all secret pages such as opera:cache, opera:debug, etc

So now you can Configure your browser using these built-in hidden configuration settings.

Check operating system is 32 bit or 64 bit??

The terms 32-bit and 64-bit refer to the way a computer's processor (also called a CPU), handles information. The 64-bit version of Windows handles large amounts of random access memory (RAM) more effectively than the 32-bit version.

You should know if you're running the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows XP for many reasons, but most importantly so you're sure to install the type of software and drivers created to work with your operating system.

For example, if you're running Windows XP 32-bit and you want to update the drivers for a device, you'll need to install the 32-bit drivers designed for the hardware. 64-bit drivers won't work in the 32-bit version of Windows XP and vise versa.

Windows XP :-

1 Click the Start button,

2 Right-click Computer,

3 Click Properties

Note: You should be on the General tab in System Properties.

4 Under System: you'll see basic information about the version of Windows XP installed on your computer:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version [year] means you're running Windows XP 32-bit.
Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Version [year] means you're running Windows XP 64-bit.

Important: There are no 64-bit versions of Windows XP Home or Windows XP Media Center Edition. If you have either of these editions of Windows XP then you're running a 32-bit operating system.

Now that you know if you're running Windows XP 32-bit or Windows XP 64-bit, you can be comfortable choosing the correct drivers and software for your computer.

Go to the start menu.
Choose all programs
Then choose accessories, then system tools.
Now choose system information.
See the screen shot below.

If it says x86 then you have a 32 bit operating system. If the processor area mentioned a 64 or AMD64 then this means you have a 64 bit processor. If it said Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition Version then this means it is a 64 bit operating system. However as you can see from above, it says Microsoft Windows XP Professional and the processor starts with X86 so therefore this is a 32 bit processor with a 32 bit operating system.

Computers running Windows Vista or Windows 7

Click the Start button , right-click Computer, and then click Properties.

If "64-bit Operating System" is listed next to System type, you’re running the 64-bit version of Windows Vista or Windows 7.
If "32-bit Operating System" is listed next to System type, you’re running the 32-bit version of Windows Vista or Windows 7.

The edition of Windows Vista or Windows 7 you're running is displayed under Windows edition near the top of the window.

Another way to see if you have a 32 bit or a 64 bit operating system

1. Go to control panel by going to the start menu in the bottom left corner.

2. Click on the system icon.

3. The information will be there.

4. See in the screen shot below I have a 32-bit Operating system.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of having a 64 bit system?

You will need to install 64-bit drivers for all your add ons like your printer, usb stick, digital camera, and more. This is why people have had problems with having a 64 bit system. However as time goes on the technology gets better and more refined… Soon drivers will be available for most devices.
If you have a 64 bit processor and a 64 bit operating system you will have to have 64-bit software applications like office programs, picture editors, and so on..
There is not much compatible software available at the moment, however this is changing.
A Vista 64 bit operating system does not support any 32 bit software.
An AMD 64 bit processor supports both 32 bit and 64 bit operating systems.
Vista 64 bit operating system has major improvements on security features and kicks the 32 bit but. New features that prevent and almost make system attacks impossible.
Vista Home Basic 64 bit supports up to 8 GB of RAM, Vista Home Premium 64 bit supports up to 16 GB and Vista Business, Enterprise, and Ultimate 64 bit supports up to 128 GB, whereas 32 bit Vista supports 4 GB or RAM.

You have been receiving SMS like LM-HATHWAY, TD-Google, MM-FACEBK. These sms's sent by Banks, Service Providers, Social Networking sites, Companies and many other recognized organizations, institutes that have started prefixing something like LM, MM, BT, TA, AD, ID, AT, VK…etc. What’s all this after all!!?

These SMSs originates from a Bulk SMS provider.the new TRAI regulation insisted bulk SMS providers to restrict the “Sender ID” to minimum 6 characters.

Three characters should be used to specify who is the bulk SMS service provider & where it’s originated from. Say for example: WAY2SMS sends an SMS to you using bulk SMS provider located at MUMBAI which uses Loop Mobile.You will receive it as LM-WAYSMS. First character specifies which service provider the message is being originated & the second character specifies from which location it’s originated. Another CES has come and gone. Project Shield in one of the favorite product from the show CES 2013.

Project Shield is a proposed handheld game console by Nvidia Corporation which was first announced at CES 2013 on 7 January 2013. Project Shield was one of the hot topics of CES. The company seemingly came out of left field with the device's announcement during its Monday press conference.

The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas may be over, but it does not mean news and product announcements come to an end. Asus waited until today, perhaps to avoid the avalanche of other announcements, to unveil its new MeMO Pad — a seven inch Android 4.1 tablet that will be released soon.

The MeMO Pad will run Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, has a 1 MP front facing camera, 1 GB of RAM and comes with either 8 or 16 GB of storage. The company claims 7 hours of battery life. In addition, it claims to feature “a 10-point multi-touch LED-backlit display with 1024 x 600 resolution, 140-degree wide viewing angles, and its 350-nit brightness means images remain clear, even outdoors”.

The tablet “will be available starting this January in selected markets”. Prices begin at $149 — presumably for the 8 GB version. The MeMO Pad will come in three colors – Sugar White, Titanium Gray and Cherry Pink and will be in the U.S. market in April.

How To Create a Super Hidden Folder In Windows Vista & XP.

1. Open My Computer and go to File Menu>Tools>Folder Options>View Tab (Press altbutton to show file menu bar in windows vista).

2. Scroll down and check the option which says - “Show Hidden Files and Folders” and uncheck the option which says - “Hide Protected Operating System Files(Recommended)” and click ok.

3. Now Open any drive from my computer you will find a folder named RECYCLER (this is a hidden as well as system folder).

4. Copy this folder any where and rename it according to your choice and paste your private files into this folder.

5. Repeat the step 1 and check the option which says - “Hide Protected Operating System Files(Recommended)” and click ok.

Now go to the location where you pasted and renamed that folder called RECYCLER ,you will notice that folder is invisible even if the setting called “Show Hidden Files and Folders” is checked, so you have finally created a ultra hidden folder in windows.

Enabling support for Indian languages (Indic) on your computer

Windows XP

Windows XP has inbuilt Indian languages features. If you enable these features, you will be able to view the Hindi pages much better. You must have at least 10 MB of free hard disk space and the Installation Disk of Windows ready, before starting. Please close any open programs.

1. Go to Control Panel (from the “Start” button)

2. Go to Regional and Language Options

3. Click the “Languages” tab

4. Check (click) the line marked “Install files for complex scripts and right to left languages (including Thai)”

When you check this line, a new window will appear, which will give a list of languages that will be installed. This list will include ‘Indic’. It will ‘warn’ you that you need at least 10 MB of hard disk space. Click OK to close this window. Then click OK on the Regional and Languages Options window. You will be asked to restart your computer.

You should be able to view the Hindi text on this site now.

Windows 2000

Enable support for Indian languages on your computer. Windows 2000 has inbuilt Indian languages features. If you enable these features, you will be able to view the Hindi pages much better.

1. Go to Settings (Start Button)

2. Go to Control Panel

3. Go to Regional Options

4. In "Language settings for the system" (in the first "General" tab), select Indic.

5. Click Ok

You should be able to view the Hindi text on this site now.

Windows 95 / Windows 98 / Windows Me

- Download and install the following font, download to your Windows/Fonts folder: Mangal

- Win Me should work now, but for Win98/95, you must also download the Takhti editor, unzip it, run it and close it. It should auto detect the correct files needed to display the unicode font.

- Rebooting the computer is advised, but not required. Refreshing the webpage in the browser should be enough.

How To Change IP Addresses on Windows XP | 2000 | NT

This post helps you to change IP address of your system manually.
Follow these steps to quickly release and/or renew the Internet Protocol (IP) address of a computer running Windows XP, Windows 2000, or Windows NT.

1) Click the 'Start' menu button on the Windows taskbar.

2) Click 'Run'... on this menu.

3) If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'cmd' (without the quotes) in the text box that appears. A command prompt window appears on the screen.

4) Type 'ipconfig' (without the quotes) to view the status of the computer's IP address(es).

5) If the computer is holding a current IP address, type 'ipconfig /release' to let go of the address.

6) Type 'ipconfig /renew' to obtain a new IP address (whether or not the computer is holding a current address).

Tips:

If it is not necessary to view the current IP addresses on a computer, simply type 'ipconfig /release' or 'ipconfig /renew' (without the quotes) in the text box that appears in Step 3.
To bring a computer back onto the network after moving it to a different location, or experiencing an unexpected outage, first release, then renew the IP address. Computers on DHCP networks often (but not always) re-establish network connectivity automatically.

A hacker is a person who breaks into computers and computer networks for profit, in protest, or because they are motivated by the challenge.the term hacker is reclaimed by computer programmers who argue that someone breaking into computers is better called a cracker, not making a difference between computer criminals ("black hats") and computer security experts ("white hats"). Today i give you information about the 10 Biggest legends of the Hacker universe.

1) Kevin Mitnick: Known worldwide as the “most famous hacker” and for having been the first to serve a prison sentence for infiltrating computer systems. He started dabbling when he was a minor, using the practice known as phone phreaking. Although he has never worked in programming, Mitnick is totally convinced that you can cause severe damage with a telephone and some calls. These days, totally distanced from his old hobbies and after passing many years behind bars, he works as a security consultant for multinational companies through his company “Mitnick Security.”

2) Gary McKinnon: This 41-year-old Scotsman, also known as Solo, is the perpetrator of what’s considered the biggest hack in the history of computer science – into a military system. Not satisfied with this, in the years 2001 and 2002, he made a mockery of the information security of NASA itself and the Pentagon. Currently he is at liberty awarding his extradition to the U.S. and prohibited access to a computer with Internet connection.

3) Vladimir Levin: This Russian biochemist and mathematician was accused of having committed one of the biggest bank robberies of all times by means of the cracking technique. From Saint Petersburg, Levin managed to transfer funds estimated at approximately 10 million dollars from Citibank in New York to accounts he had opened in distant parts of the world. He was arrested by INTERPOL in 1995 at Heathrow airport (England). Although he managed to rob more than 10 million dollars, he was only sentenced to three years in prison. Currently he is free.

4) Kevin Poulsen: Today he may be a journalist and collaborates with authorities to track paedophiles on the Internet, but Poulsen has a dark past as a cracker and phreaker. The event that brought him the most notoriety was taking over Los Angeles phone lines in 1990. A radio station was offering a Porsche as a prize for whoever managed to be caller number 102. It goes without saying that Poulsen was the winner of the contest.

5) Timothy Lloyd: In 1996, information services company Omega, provider of NASA and the United States Navy, suffered losses of around 10 million dollars. And it was none other than Tim Lloyd, an x-employee fired some weeks earlier, who was the cause of this financial disaster. Lloyd left a virtually activated information bomb in the company’s codes, which finally detonated July 31 of that same year.

6) Robert Morris: Son of one of the forerunners in the creation of the virus, in 1988 Morris managed to infect no fewer than 6,000 computers connected to the ArpaNet network (one of the precursors to the internet) He did it from the prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and for his criminal activities he earned a four year prison sentence, which was finally reduced to community service.

7) David Smith: Not all hackers can boast of creating the virus that spread the fastest to computers the width and breadth of the globe – David Smith can. In 1999, the father of the Melissa virus managed to infect and crash 100,000 email accounts with his malicious creation. Smith, who was thirty years old at the time, was sentenced and freed on bail.

8) MafiaBoy: In February of 2000, many of the most important online companies in the US, such as eBay, Yahoo and Amazon, suffered a technical glitch called Denial of Service, which caused a total of 1700 million dollars in losses. But did these sites know that the perpetrator of the attack was a 16 year-old Canadian who responded to the alias MafiaBoy? Surely not, although it didn’t take them long to find out, thanks to his bragging about his bad deed to his classmates at school.

9) Masters of Deception (MoD): MoD was a New York cyber-gang that reached its apogee in the early 90s. Under the cover of different aliases, its biggest attacks involved taking over telephone lines and centres of the Internet, then still in its infancy. During this time McD starred in the historic “battles of the hackers,” along with other groups like the Legion of Doom (LoD), as they sought to destroy each other until the computers couldn’t take it anymore.

10) Richard Stallman: Since the early 80s when he was a hacker specializing in artificial intelligence, this hippie-looking New Yorker has been one of the most active militants in favor of free software. At MIT he firmly opposed the privatization of the software used by the institute’s laboratory, so much so they he created what today is known as GNU and the concept of CopyLeft. Popular systems like Linux utilize the GNU mode and Stallman is currently one of the gurus of software democratization.

Social networking war at its best. Every day new features are added in sites to attract users.
Few days back Facebook added two new features in it, that is, Group chat and video calling. In last post I have already told you how to setup the video calling in Facebook (read guide here). Now I will tell you about the group chat feature.
Few days back only similar group member can chat in same window, but now there is no need to add members in same group to chat in same window. Facebook group chat feature allows online friends to chat simultaneously in one window. You can also chat with an entire Facebook group, if you are a member of that group.

Steps to group chat with online Facebook friends:

1. Login to Facebook.

2. Open the chat window present in the bottom right corner of the screen.

3. Select any friend, you want to chat with, from that list.

4. Left click on the options icon on chat box and select “Add friends to chat…”.
( New text box will appear )

5. Now add friends by typing their name.

6) Click on "Done".

Now you can have a good discussion, since all friends are chatting on same window.

Steps to chat with a Facebook group:

1. Login to Facebook.

2. Select the desired group from left sidebar.

How to enable facebook video chat?

Facebook has launched video chat option with Skype.aiming to spice up the appeal of the world's No. 1 Internet social networking service while fending off increased competition from Google. Now you can chat with your friends in video mode but you will have to enable this chat option first.

To enable this option follow these steps.

1. Log in to your facebook account

2. Go to www.facebook.com/videocalling

3. Click on Get Started. It will ask you to select a friend to video chat

4. Click on a friend, the chat window opens up

Tablet war hots up, Blackberry to launch Playbook this month

After mobile phones, the competition is hotting up for “tablets” in India with BlackBerry-maker Research in Motion (RIM) all set to launch its PlayBook in the country later this month, to face the likes of Apple’s iPad and Samsung’s Galaxy Tab.

The Canadian firm will launch PlayBook in Indian markets and some other countries this month, sources said. According to the company’s website, the PlayBook is scheduled to be launched in 16 countries, including the UK, Netherlands, Hong Kong, Australia, UAE and India.

“The price is going to be competitive with the other products and in line with the global pricing as well,” they said.

The price in India could range between Rs 22,000 and Rs 32,000, depending upon its storage capacity, from 16 GB to 64 GB.

Globally, PlayBook is available at USD 499, USD 599 and USD 699 for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB versions, respectively.

Since the launch of Apple’s iPad, the tablet market is witnessing huge competition, with new contenders launching their devices. A tablet PC, though smaller in size, has PC-like functionalities.

Apple’s rival in the computing space, Dell had launched the ‘Streak’ last year in India, while homegrown telecom handset makers like Spice and Olive have also launched similar devices at much lower price points.

The BlackBerry tablet has received a mixed response from the markets where it has been launched. According to reports, unlike rival iPad, which sold like hot cakes on its launch in April last year, the PlayBook just sold 50,000 copies in the first week of its launch on April 19 in the US and Canada.

BlackBerry has over one million users in India and RIM would target them.

The PlayBook is a seven-inch tablet that runs on a new operating system built by QNX Software Systems - a RIM unit that makes software used to run everything from cars to nuclear reactors.

On a PlayBook, users can go online only using a Wi-Fi network or by synchronising the device to their BlackBerry smartphones.

According to analysts, sales in the tablet PC segment in India are expected to touch one million units over the next 12 months.

With 3G (high-speed internet services) being rolled out aggressively, the opportunity has only expanded, they said.

SaaS (Software as a Service) is the category of cloud computing in which the main resources available as a service are software applications. PaaS (Platform as a Service) is the category/application of cloud computing in which the service providers deliver a computing platform or a solution stack to their subscribers over the internet.

What is PaaS?

PaaS is the category/application of cloud computing in which the service providers deliver a computing platform (a hardware architecture and a software framework) or a solution stack (computer subsystem needed to run a software). This makes it possible for the subscribers to deploy an application without having to buy and manage the necessary software and hardware requirements. Cloud computing and grid computing are the two different ways through which computing is done. Cloud computing means the services are used on the internet rather than local system. However, grid computing deals with the sharing of tasks over number of computers. Cloud computing can be described as a type of grid computing.

Cloud Computing

In late 2007, the term cloud computing was coined. In cloud computing, the services that are used daily are moved on the internet rather than being stored on a local machine. Email is a small example of cloud computing and it is available in both methods. Services like Yahoo mail and Google mail provide email facility and people do not need Microsoft Outlook or other applications for the purpose of mail. In this way, email service can be used anywhere in the world where there is internet connection.

After 2007, other services like spreadsheets, presentations and word processing entered cloud computing as Google provided presentation, spread sheets and word processing services and integrated them with Google Calendar and Gmail. Grid Computing

Sharing of tasks over number of computers is known as Grid computing. The tasks can simply be data storage or it can be complex calculations. The distribution of tasks can be over large distances. The computers in a grid can act as a part of grid while they are not in use. In order to complete projects, the grid search for unutilized cycles on different computers to access them. One of the popular grid computing projects is SETI@home. There are many organizations that rely on different volunteers who offer their computers to be added on the grid.

A virtual supercomputer is created after these computers are joined together. There may be some problem in these networked computers but still they are powerful than the supercomputers used in 70s and 80s. The principles of grid computing provide the way for modern supercomputers with many small computers attached to each other to form a supercomputer.

Over 7.5 Million Underage Users on Facebook

The world’s most popular social-networking service, had 7.5 million U.S. users who were younger than 13 in the past year, a violation of the site’s policies, according to a survey by Consumer Reports.

More than 5 million of the users were under age 11, according to the Consumer Reports “State of the Net” survey. In addition, Facebook exposed more than 5 million U.S. households to some type of “abuse,” including virus infections and identity theft, the survey showed. About 1 million children experienced bullying on the site, Consumer Reports said.
“Despite Facebook’s age requirements, many kids are using the site who shouldn’t be,” said Jeff Fox, technology editor for the Yonkers, New York, magazine. “What’s even more troubling was the finding from our survey that indicated that a majority of parents of kids 10 and under seemed largely unconcerned by their children’s use of the site.”
Facebook, which has more than 500 million members, has faced criticism that it doesn’t protect the privacy of users, especially young people, and can be used to bully teens. Last month, the company announced additional safety tools, including a redesigned “Family Safety Center” that has videos and articles for teens, parents and teachers.
Facebook said it encourages communication between parents and kids about using the Internet safely.

Age Restrictions

“Recent reports have highlighted just how difficult it is to implement age restrictions on the Internet and that there is no single solution to ensuring younger children don’t circumvent a system or lie about their age,” the company said today in an e-mailed statement. “We appreciate the attention that these reports and other experts are giving this matter and believe this will provide an opportunity for parents, teachers, safety advocates and Internet services to focus on this area.”
Facebook requires users to be at least 13 -- and older in some jurisdictions. The site also lets users report accounts registered to members who are under 13 so they can be deleted.
In March, Facebook said it’s expanding an existing reporting system that lets users flag content they consider bullying to a parent or teacher. The site also lists tips on preventing cyber-bullying, including using a “block” feature to stop abusive behavior.
In all, Palo Alto, California-based Facebook has 20 million American users under 18, Consumer Reports said.

Facebook booting '20,000' underage users per day

But that doesn't mean Facebook isn't trying to stop kids from becoming addicted to the network at such a young age (though indoctrination does have its benefits!).
According to a report by the Daily Telegraph, Facebook is kicking out roughly 20,000 underage users per day.

In a meeting with Australia's cyber-safety committee, Facebook's chief privacy adviser Mozelle Thompson agreed that underage users were taking advantage of the site. After all, any user no matter his or her age can register for the site by simply lying when signing up -- Facebook has no mechanisms to detect whether a teen is telling the truth or not.

"It's not perfect," said Thompson.

However, Facebook's privacy czar did argue that Facebook is trying to stop these young'ins from continuing to use the site.

"There are people who lie. There are people who are under 13 [accessing Facebook]," Thompson said. "Facebook removes 20,000 people a day, people who are underage."
Of course, that's a fraction of the nearly 600 million users on Facebook, but underage users have become a growing concern for the network, especially as it faces increased pressure from regulators -- whether in Australia or the U.S.

Most innovative companies -- Facebook

Last April, Senators Franken, Bennet, and Schumer penned a letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg over privacy issues related to collecting the personal data of users. This month, Sen. Franken stepped up pressure on the world's largest network, with support from even more Congressional colleagues.
This time the focus was specifically on "users between 13 to 17 years of age."
"Facebook's new privacy policy would endanger the privacy and safety of children as young as 13. Under Facebook's policy, 13 million users under the age of 18 may be allowed to share their personal information just like adult users," Franken argued.
"These younger users are the most vulnerable to predators on Facebook and the rest of the Internet and it should be impossible for them to inadvertently share their phone numbers and home addresses with anyone."

And that's not even taking into consideration the users who are younger than 13.

Gmail Motion Biggest April Fools Joke

With April Fool’s day in full swing, one of technology’s greatest contributors has cooked up a joke that almost seems real.

When users of Google’s Gmail logged in this morning, Google notified them of a new extension of Gmal called “Gmail Motion.” The proposed idea would turn your laptop into an Xbox Kinect of sorts, as you would use your body motions to determine what Gmail would do.

For example:
"To open a message make a movement as if you were opening an envelope. To reply, simply point backward with your thumb," the company says in a video demonstration of the product, which seems to be a riff on Microsoft's Kinect gaming system. "To reply all, use both hands. To send a message, lick a stamp and place it down."

According to the Gmail Motion webpage, “Gmail Motion uses your computer’s built-in webcam and Google’s patented spatial tracking technology to detect your movements and translate them into meaningful characters and commands. Movements are designed to be simple and intuitive for people of all skill levels.”
As a company known for their April Fool’s day pranks, this one might have caused the most confusion. Google released a drawing of all the responses Gmail would recognize, and provided pictures of “beta testers” making ridiculous signs with their hands.

While the idea might not be a bad one for the future, this iteration of user control will have to remain an April Fool’s joke for this year.
