We all want our children to make friends and be popular. But popularity comes at quite a price when you find yourself running them from one birthday party to another. If they get along with even half of their class by the time they start school or nursery, it’s likely they’ll be invited to around 10-15 celebrations in the course of a year. That means, if you splash out £15-20 per gift, you’re spending up to £300 a year. Per child. *falls over in a dead faint* Remember, the invitation has been extended because the birthday boy (or girl) likes your child and wants them to share in the fun. And if they’re anything like my kids, they won’t remember who brought them which parcel, in the...

I’m not the sort of Mum who rushes off to the GP for every little cough and sniffle. But sometimes I think we’re so afraid of being labelled paranoid parents, we go too far in the other direction. Even when something just doesn’t sit right. Or in my case, stand. And I had the feeling all was not well when Blake ran into our bedroom on a Sunday morning saying: “Bwodie’s got a sore weg” (imagine, if you will, Jonathan Ross on helium and that’s my three-year-old’s voice). Brodie was sitting pathetically on the top bunk in their room, unable to get himself down the ladder. In fact, after Mr G carried him downstairs and put him on the couch, he was...

Research released earlier this week shows that a staggering 68% of mums and dads are unaware of the limitations of current vaccinations against meningitis. Could this be why many of us don’t think about checking for meningitis when our children are poorly? Although great strides have been made to protect our children from some types of meningitis, there is currently no vaccine to protect against meningococcal serogroup B (MenB), which causes the majority of meningitis cases and deaths in the UK. Bacterial meningitis and septicaemia affect around 3,400 people in the UK each year, killing more children under the age of five than any other infectious disease. A friend of mine...

I love my smart phone … almost as much as I love my children. And they love it too. Which is why, when there is need for distraction – or perhaps a few moments peace, I confess I give it to them. And I don’t feel too bad. After all, it’s not like plonking them in front of the TV is it? They are not zoning out, they are interacting! Every swipe of their fingers seems to offer a reassuring signal that their minds are at work. They are contemplating their next move. Perhaps even learning something. But is it really that simple? Is interactive media really better than television? Is my smart phone making me a better parent? No more flash cards Take Read Write Phonics, a smart phone app...

I’ve had difficulty writing this post. Not because I don’t know what to say. But my two boys keep bursting into the room, asking me to help them rebuild their ‘den’. This is a duvet draped over a variety of objects – a chair, a blackboard, a rocking horse – to make a little tent. It’s enough to set them off on a whole host of adventures. As I write this, they are hiding from the “baddies”, armed with their plastic swords, ready to do battle and defend their settlement. Brodie’s obsession with Doctor Who means there might be a few daleks out there as well. And the den could suddenly become a Tardis hurtling through time. Or...

Project 52: One photo every week for 52 weeks. Check out more great offerings, at TheBoyandMe. Also entered into Country Kids at Coombe Mill (although this is more like a suburban kid – but at least he was getting fresh air!)
