GAVIN BLAKE:
Beautiful Icons
Opening June 1^st, 2012
“Beauty… fame…spirituality…innocence… love…these are some of the things that fascinate me. Mostly because when you take these iconic themes out of context and combine them in new ways, the viewer is introduced to an alternate experience. When the unique energy between the infinite shades of life is discovered, that’s when things start to get interesting…” – Gavin Blake.
Gavin Blake is pleased to present his first solo exhibition in Washington DC “Beautiful Icons”.
More than 200 paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures combined, the exhibition was conceived to explore the boundaries between nature, sex, popular culture and spirituality. An emerging artist to keep an eye on, Blake has an instinct for the importance of longevity but also understands why artistic vision is a reference to the past as well as a trajectory into the future.
Blake’s work presents visually arresting forms and concepts, while simultaneously blending the concerns and methods of Pop, Conceptual, and Appropriation art, where craft-making and popular culture collide to create his own unique iconography. At the same time his work asks fundamental questions about the meaning of life and the fragility of existence.
For Blake, seducing the viewer into the work visually, while providing a minimalist geometry to frame and composition, is at the core of his desire to contain and objectify his subject. In many of the paintings, prints and sculptures, the idea of a human presence is implied through the inclusion of relic-like objects: A way for the viewer to ponder human evolution and our inevitable connection to our environment…an awareness of the totality of life.
Gavin Blake was born in 1971 in New York, USA. He currently lives and works in Washington DC with his wife Adriana and daughter Sasha. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Film and Sculpture at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Blake also studied sculpture, photography and advertising at the School of Visual Arts in New York City.
