Just read that certain salad sprouts were found to have high levels of the bacteria E.coli. Victorian salad sprouts test positive to E.coli.

There are some myths regarding salads..
1) Eating salad is healthy
Yea, even McDonald starts serving salad to appear "healthy".. True or not, it's up to you to decide but it's certainly not when it comes with generous amount of E.coli..

2) Eating salad or being vegetarian will help weight loss..
Probably true, but curiously, elephants are vegetarian also..

Frasers Restaurant Kings Park

Been to Frasers Restaurant with my colleagues the other day.. The restaurant is located in Kings Park, thus has a pretty nice view of Perth..

This park is quite a popular dating spot for couples thanks to its panoramic view of Perth city, especially at night when it's a bit dark and has some privacy..

The restaurant itself also can la.. but it can be a bit loud inside..

City of Perth in the background.. It's peaceful just sit around watching the cars, lights and the city lives by.. Watching other people being busy has a calming effect..

Anyway, moving on to the food..

"Chilled asparagus soup with manna crab and asparagus salad" is quite a mouthful for a starter menu item..

To be honest, the canned asparagus soup I bought from Coles tasted better.. Adding the manna crab was a bit odd.. It didn't accentuate the taste in any way.. Just seemed a bit out of place..

"Pan fried goat cheese gnocchi, wild mushroom, burnt butter sauce"

"Sashimi of tasmanian salmon, bluefin tuna, hiramasa kingfish"

"Fresh tumeric, fish fillet and king prawn curry, kaffir scented rice" lacked depth and flavour.. But it was kinda expected from caucasian preparing an Asian dish..

Forgot what this one was already.. Maybe it's the "Roast 'Mt Barker' chicken, turnip, baby heirloom carrot puree.

"'Line caught' pink snapper fillet, potato puree, salsa verde with fennel"... Fish was fresh.. Otherwise it didn't really stand out..

"Terriyaki beef fillet with bbq onions, teriyaki sauce"

"Churros in cinnamon sugar with chocolate diping sauce, vanila bean ice cream"

Overall, this is like your average caucasian restaurant but offers a fantastic view of Perth city.. The price was a bit more expensive..

You can buy CNY cookies in Perth also, but they are mostly China products (less delicious)..

Just read news about some China people gone mad about Iphone 4S.

Having stayed in China for a couple of weeks, it's not hard to imagine this from happening.. Rude people lacking even the slightest etiquette and zero regard to people queueing..

But come on.. It's just a mobile phone.. You use it to call people, sms and maybe a couple of apps.. No need for poor manners..

Three dumb dumb anti whaling protesters

Apparently three unwelcomed idiots illegally boarded a Japanese whaling ship in international water yesterday as part of their anti-whaling protest.

They had the audacity to demand the Japanese crews to ferry them back to Australian shore and for the Japanese whaling fleet to piss off back to Japan..

Obviously that did not happen and these three idiots were detained by the crew. Now they are claiming that they are taken "hostage" and want Australian government to "take action".

As you can see, stupidity knows no bounds.

Code Geass R2

Code Geass R2 is the sequel to the previous series, Lelouch of the Rebellion.

It's an absolutely superb and amazing anime to watch that keeps you in suspense throughout with its intense battles and unpredictable turns of events..

This anime also draws many parallels with history..world war two, the two atomic bombings, the death of Jesus Christ etc and etc.. Its characters are well developed, each with their own individuality.. It brings out emotion and makes one ponders about the concept of forgiveness, justice and morality..

The ending was tragic yet beautiful.. It's a masterpiece..

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion

Spent my time watching anime marathon.. 25 episodes of Code Geass in one day..

Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion is a very entertaining and addictive Japanese anime.. Its genre is a sci-fci and warfare yet also touches a fair bit on philosophy and morality.

It shares some similarities with Death Note but it's thoroughly an anime in a class of its own..

In a nutshell, it's a movie about an exiled prince called Lelouch who was given some mind control ability going against the kingdom that his father controls.

Highly recommended.. Yes, adults can watch cartoon also..

BTW, this anime endorses Pizza Hut..

Ascot Waters

Had a leisurely stroll in Ascot Waters, a scenic little suburb by the Swan River in the City of Belmont.. Believe it or not, this site used to be a landfill.. It sure has changed a lot..

This suburb comes with its own marina.. Yea, so some of the houses come with both carparks and docking spots for boat..

New Year 2012 dinner

New Year 2012 in Perth was pretty quiet.. Roads were pretty empty.. No spectacular fireworks.. Only heard some random small ones.. You don't call it laid back Western Australia for nothing..

We had our dinner at home.. Had lobster with mushroom cream...

The lobster on the cutting board.. The lobster was different from what we used to in Malaysia.. Maybe it was farmed lobster.. The meat was a bit rough and lacked sweetness..

Old Cathay

Old Cathay is actually a relatively new Malaysian Chinese restaurant in Victoria Park.. It's not new new.. I've been there a couple of times but only brought my camera this time around..

The interior design is sleek and modern.. Good harmony of colours and paintings on wall add to the soothing atmosphere..

Medium size Butter King Prawns was priced at $28.80.. The King Prawns were your average sized.. This dish was well done, as how butter prawn should taste like..

Spinach with century eggs & salted eggs costed $16.80. The century and salted eggs added depth to this otherwise simple dish.. Taste ok.

Sago Gula Melaka with Taro Ice Cream came at $6.80. The taro ice cream was not as flavourful as I remember them.. Don't know why..

Complimentary fruit.. Good for digestive system..

Old Cathay offers reasonably good Malaysian food in Perth..

Christmas dinner 2011

The year is coming to an end.. This year we had our Christmas dinner at home.. Cooked some fantabulous creamy prawn pasta that would honestly put a lot of Italian restaurants in Perth and Melbourne to shame..

The main ingredient were the large Tiger prawns (yea, I know, they were petit if you talking about Malaysia standard, but this is Perth). Managed to bring out the whole essence of Tiger prawns in the dish..

Batavia Corner is an Indonesian restaurant in East Victoria Park.. As you can see, they were a bit stingy with chicken, like they were some endangered species like that.. Only a tiny chicken wing was given.. Plus it was too dry.. Too skinny.. Only good if you like to eat bones..

Their fried rice was too salty.. Probably the chef accidentally poured the entire container of salt into the fried rice..

Sorry, photo taken using my pre-historic Nokia phone camera..

Teh tarik was acceptable but nothing special..

Overall, lousy food.. Really not worth visiting..

20th Century boys:1Malaysia 1Tomodachi

Just watched 20th Century Boys which I found randomly on the internet.. This movie came out quite a few years ago and had won some manga awards..

The movies itself span three series.. Though some parts were a bit long winded, they were addictive enough to make you keep watching till the end.

Anyway, it very much resembles the situation in Malaysia including the poking out the index finger pose by the villian..

In a nutshell, the villian called himself Tomodachi or Friend in Japanese.. For some reasons (you have to watch the movies to find out) he was carrying out some super large scaled homicides against the humankind..

Yet people saw him as their savior as he controlled the media. There were Tomodachi radio, Tomodachi TV, this and that to spread the propaganda.. There were Tomodachi logo everywhere.. The police and armed forces were also under his control.

The good guys were treated as terrorists. People were sent to brainwash courses called Tomodachi-Land..

In Malaysia, we have this 1Malaysia thing to fool everyone.. Interestingly similar pose with the index finger pointing out..

Though Barisan Najis has been corrupt to the core and destroying the future of the country, some idiots (and there are plenty) still think highly of them, largely due to controlled media.

There are 1Malaysia logo everywhere.. Also 1Malaysia grocery stall, fish market, this and that..

There are BTN courses to brainwash people.. Oppositions were systemically discriminated against..

Barisan Najis must have got their 1Malaysia idea from this movie..

Tenkadori Japanese Restaurant

Malaysians have satay, Aussies have barbie as in barbeque, not some girly stuff.. Japanese have kushiyaki or also commonly called yakitori, though strictly speaking yakitori refers to grilled chicken..

There is this yakitori restaurant, Tenkadori in Subiaco.. Literally Tenkadori means something like universal chicken.. Anyway, this is a francise restaurant from Japan..

Photo above is Renkon or lotus chips.. They overfried this one giving it a bit of bitter taste..The sweetness of lotus is lost also..

Fish cake was ok ok..

Agedashi Tofu was light and refreshing..

Calamari ring.. Nothing to shout about.. Taste just like what you buy from Coles..

Yakitori prawn was very disappointing.. I thought it would be something like grilled fresh seafood but it was just like skewered peeled prawns that you could buy from Coles.. Nothing against Coles, I always do my grocery there..

But icecream was good..

Overall this francise restaurant from Japan, hardly do Japanese food any justice.. The variety was quite limited, especially seafood.. And the seafood that they have was just like some cheap prepackaged seafood that you can easily buy from supermarkets..

Izakaya Sakura is THE place for good authentic Japanese food in Perth.. It's located on the fringe of the popular eating street in Northbridge, far enough from noisy pubs..

I been there many times but this is the first time I brought a camera with me..

They have regular menu and special menu which they update regularly... The food here is light and depends a lot on the natural flavour of the ingredient.. No heavy seasoning or sauce..

This restaurant also serves entrees which are not available from the menu.. They bring it to your table for you to choose..

Herring roe with bonito was unique simply because you don't usually find this kind of Japanese food in Perth..

Salmon belly was fresh.. Still prefer tuna belly though.. For some reason, it's hard to find tuna belly in Perth..

Grilled salmon.. The miso was not overpowering and enhanced the natural flavour of the salmon.

Potato croquette complemented with a dipping sauce..

Grilled mackerel was pretty standard..

Tuna tataki not bad also..

Apple pie with icecream.. The icecream tasted bit like white chocolate icecream..

Green tea icecream was nice..Would be better if they add red bean to it.. It would be heavenly..

There are plenty of Japanese restaurants in Perth but most of them are just disappointing and offer substandard fake Japanese food.. I have to say Izakaya Sakura is among the top restaurants that offers authentic Japanese restaurant in Perth..

Malaysia Airlines Business Plan

Malaysia Airlines recently revealed yet another of their business turnaround plan.. It's like they turn around every couple of years, in the end, back to square one or worse.. Have to pity them, the government put one dumb crony after another to run the airline.

Anyway this time, their CEO said they had to make "hard and unpopular decisions" to survive and their turnaround plan this time came with five major pillars.

1) Smaller yet profitable network
- Apparently 40% of their routes don't make any profit.. Instead of finding ways to make those routes profitable, just take simplistic way out of removing those routes.
- Airline business depends heavily on frequency and network. Would you fly an airline with limited destination and poor frequency?

2) Win back customers
- Like duh..? Didn't see them do much also.

3) Relentless cost focus
- Cut here and there, in the end, they will end up with nothing. They should invest smart.

4) Keep it simple
- Simple or sophisticated, as long as make profit..Who cares..

5) Bridge the funding gap
- Not enough money to buy planes after spending too much for cronies including sponsoring a largely unknown football club.

They also came up with some "Game changers" plan
1) Launch of new regional premium airline
- Like MAS is not premium enough.. If really want a new airline, why stop Firefly Jet?
- Actually this means new contracts and business for cronies

2) Alliance and partnerships
- Only good thing they have done is joining Oneworld, but they need to be smart enough to benefit from the alliance

3) Collaboration with Air Asia
- Basically means sleeping with enemy. In this case, it's sleeping and being abused by the enemy.

4) Ancillary business spin-off
- Pretty similar to "Keep it simple" above..

P'tite Androise Bistro

P'tite Androise Bistro is french restaurant in Highgate, Perth.. Despite its name, it's not so petite in size, but just like your typical restaurant cum bistro..

Inside the orange hue gave it a warm and cosy ambience... But the seatings were quite tightly packed together.. Guess most restaurants in Australia are like that..

Most of the waitresses were Europeans, which add to the atmosphere.. Make you feel a bit like in Europe but you are not...

There was a variety of bread to choose from..

The bread basket costed $3.50 per person.. You can eat as many as you want.. The waitress came around quite often to offer you bread like filling your glass with water..

This restaurant charged $10 for corkage though they hardly had any variety of drinks.. I thought it was a big rip-off.. We brought our Shaw + Smith Adelaide Hill 2011 Sauvignon blanc.. $10 is already a significant portion of the actual price of the wine itself..

Anyway.. Let's move on to their food.. Pan seared scallops came at $20.. They were huge generous size scallops but only came with three pieces.. This dish was light in flavour despite the heavy looking sauce..

Escargot a ma facon or snails cooked my way was priced at $19.. Also came in three servings..

The snails were placed in those little cups with something that like pasta tomato sauce..

Maybe this is how you should eat them??

Catch of the day was barramundi.. It costed $36.. Generous portion.. The barramundi was good.. The sauce was light and didn't overpower the fish.. The butter flavoured mashed potato was definitely a better alternative to potato chips served in most Australian restaurants..

Casserole of the day came at $39, was some sort of mixed seafood, herbs and don't know what else.. It was a confused dish.. Didn't taste fantastic also..

Some vegetables.. I think this came with the catch of the day..

Creme Brulee at $14 came with an edible Eifel Tower.. But the creme brulee itself was over burnt on some part..

Overall, it was a decent French restaurant.. Their food was reasonably good though not much to shout about.. Be warned, their corkage charge of $10 will leaveyou with a bitter aftertaste..

Home cooked food: Prawn fettuccine

Cooking pasta is superduper easy.. Don't know why they cost a bomb if you eat at restaurant..

Just buy some pasta noodles and pasta sauce from the supermarket.. Get some fresh seafood and that's almost all there is..

For my pasta, I used fettuccine, which is quite similar to kueh tiaw but different in taste..
1) Boil the fettuccine to just right or al dente (Italians like to come up with fancy phrases to make things a bit complicated but it's not).

2) Cut the prawn into half like shown in above photo. The head of the prawn will give the dish its prawn flavour.. Just look at the orange creamy brain and spinal cord of the prawn that I bought..Very delicious..So don't throw them away..

3) Lightly saute the prawn using olive oil.. Prawns get cooked pretty quickly.. Don't overcook..

4) Then throw in garlic, follow by the pasta sauce... You can add bit of the water you use to boil the pasta to make the sauce not so thick..

5) All done.. You can add cheese if you don't mind making yourself fatter...

Another picture of my prawn fettuccine.. Very satisfied.. This is how prawn pasta should be..

A little point to ponder, why is it when you order prawn noodles, they are almost always cheaper than spaghetti prawn where they are more or less the same thing..?

The Royal On The Waterfront

Been to this restaurant called The Royal On The Waterfront.. Like the name implies, it is directly situated on the waterfront in this pretty little enclave of East Perth.. If you don't like the road traffic, you can also use your boat and park right in front of the restaurant and I think there is no parking ticket for that..

This restaurant was filled to the brim when we were there.. Maybe we brought good business to them..Who knows..

Design of the restaurant was modern but basic with large alfresco area..

Dining alfresco was great until those extra large flies started to make themselves friendly to you.. And you don't have to wait long in summer..

Lemon lime and bitter came with a pricetag of $4.. Very refreshing in summer.. And mind you, summer in Australia can be hotter than malaysia and very dry.. It's dry sauna the whole day..

Seafood chowder costed $14.. It lacked in flavour and didn't have much "seafood" taste in it..

Dig a bit, you can actually find some seafood in the seafood chowder.. But still, the flavour was lacking..

This dish was their special of the day.. They called it "Ocean Catch" and it costed a bomb with a pricetag of $36..

This dish was full of vegetable.. I didn't know actually vegetable was supposed to feature so prominently in "Ocean Catch".. They are not directly part of the ocean though you could argue in a broader sense they are also part of the larger ecosystem..

The "ocean" part of the dish was the pathetic two or three pieces of tasteless fish on top of the piles of vegetables.. The fish was so tasteless that they needed to coat them with Indian spices but it didn't work as it only helped with the superficial part..

Grilled barramundi at $27 was a better dish.. They used wild barramundi so no stinking smell.. Having said that, the portion was small if you take away the vegetable part of the dish.. They should just name the dish as "Potatoes chips, salad with barramundi"... The barramundi though no stinking smell was not superb, it was just ok ok.. Nothing special to shout about..

Overall, this place though filled to the brim with customers failed to impress..

Hayashi Japanese Restaurant

Been to this Japanese restaurant in Applecross called Hayashi.. Heard it's one of the oldest in Perth and claimed to have won some awards..

Inside was quite empty.. Not many patrons despite it being dinner time.. Maybe bad omen no?

Green tea...

Your standard miso soup..

Salmon sashimi came at $18.50, was not so fresh.. Some of the slices had bit of fishy smell.. Fresh fish are not supposed to have fishy smell.. Having said that, they were quite generous with the serving.. Just look at the portion despite this being an entree dish.. They need to sell their salmon real fast otherwise they will rot.

Salmon terriyaki at $31.50 again was not so fresh.. The terriyaki sauce not so delicious..

Mixed seafood tempura at an amazing $32.50 for this midget portion was soggy and bland... Didn't know what type of seafood they used but it was quite tasteless.. Might as well just eat potatoes..

Overall, this restaurant failed miserably.. Not so fresh food.. Not delicious.. But rather expensive for what you get.. Maybe that's why so empty..

Perth food: Nobu Japanese Restaurant

Went to this restaurant called Nobu in Burswood.. It's a relatively new restaurant in an otherwise boring (and overpriced) culinary landscape of Perth..

The restaurant is named after its boss, chef Nobuyuki Matsuhisa.. Apparently, he had some stints in South America, so his dishes are not really your typical Japanese food but more of a fusion between South American and bit of Japanese food.. They rely heavily on spicy sauces and chilli.. Guess he loved South American food very much... Wonder how it would be like if he were to have his stints in Malaysia..

Inside the restaurant.. The design is generic modern design.. Nothing Japanese or South American in it..

For an expensive restaurant, they are somewhat cramped.. It seems like they try to squeeze in as many tables in as possible.. So you can clearly hear what people in the next table are talking.. Guess most Australian restaurants are like that..

The service was efficient and the waitress will try to explain each dishes to you..

Drinking sake in masu (wooden cup box) was a bit cumbersome.. Maybe that's why it's out of favour now.. Even in Japan, the masu is used more often as a cupholder..

They have a range of cocktails.. The one I had was not so impressive.. It contained some lycee, champagne and some other stuff.. Didn't finish it.. Not sure what the red ball at the bottom of the glass though.. Looked a bit like mothball..

Nobu tacos.. Mininum order is two pieces.. They had several variety to choose from such as wagyu, tuna, pork and salmon&avocado..

We had lobster tacos which costed $AUD 20.. If you look hard enough, you can actually see bits of lobster among all the vegetables and cream.. This dish was ok ok only but was way overpriced..

Yellowtail sashimi with Jalapeno at $AUD26 was superbly delicious.. It looked deceivingly simple but the sauce accentuated the taste of the sashimi while the jalapeno gave it a hint of spiciness making it a wonderful dish..

Shiromi Uzusukuri at $AUD 24 was another outstanding dish.. You are supposed the wrap the green shallot, garlic and ?radish with the sashimi before eating them.. The sauce they used held the different ingredients and harmonized the flavours together..

New style sashimi Salmon at $AUD 20 did not in any way look like your typical sashimi and it certainly was not.. The bit spicy and sweet nature of the sauce brought out the flavour of the salmon really well making it an unforgettable dish..

Creamy spicy crab came at $AUD 19 looked like someone's budget cooking but it was a masterpiece with heavenly flavour..

Prawn with wasabi pepper at $AUD 28 came with such generous amount of vegetables that would make any vegetarians happy.. But hey, where were the prawns?? Actually there were some la.. Hidden among those asparagus, mushrooms and capsicum... Overall, this was just an overglorified stir fried vegetable dish with several prawns.. The flavour was pathetic also and lacking in depth..

Short grain rice just like what you get in Japan..

Uni (sea urchin roe) tempura at $AUD 20 came with visibly more vegetable, enoki mushroom and the usual round mushroom.. After bit of searching, we eventually found the uni tempura.. It's the tiny cylinder shaped stuff rolled with seaweed.. No question, the uni tempura was great but it was just too small..

This grilled Black Cod miso came with a hefty pricetag of $AUD46.. After paying so much, you expect something extraordinary, something out of this world and furthermore it's their signature dish, which they promote on their website like no tomorrow..

But the dish was one major disappointment.. It was just too sweet.. The sweet miso paste or whatever they used, grossly overpowered the natural flavour of the black cod.. After two bites, you just feel "jialat" or sick.. Struggled to finish the dish..

Banana Harumaki with Goma Ice Cream and Passionfruit Coulis at $AUD 15 was delightful.. They wrapped the banana in springroll and deep fried them.. The passionfruit added depth to the dish.. Hmm.. Somehow it reminds me of pisang goreng..

Overall, despite some miserable dishes, this restaurant is a class on its own and offers unique culinary experience with fusion of Japanese and South American food.. Certainly worth going at least once.. Do note that they are priced on the higher end of the market..
