Typically, I post a "things we need to do NEXT TIME" list after a show, but I don't think I need to this time.  The reason is, we've done last night the things we usually do for the show, but this time with more! Chris had a new bass setup, Ronnie played well despite his midterms, and we played a new song with a sampler! (Although I learned afterwards that I could possibly adjust the tempo in the sample in real time.) We didn't do a light show or bubbles this time (sorry to the dudes who were expecting it), but that's because we were experimenting with effects and samples.  My pedal count increased dramatically while we were working on new songs, so I may have to practice with them along with the light show floor buttons.  And I think I may need to practice jumping up and down in practice; I severely messed up a couple of measures while moving around.  Crap, I think I'm making a NEXT TIME list after saying I won't!

I better stop.

]]> GP cuts off the keyboard but not the internal nagging 2009-02-26T22:37:14-06:00 A Kung Fu recap http://www.murpheek.com/archive.asp?NewsID=144&ct=2 If you caught the show this past Tuesday night, thanks for coming!  I try to write these recaps relatively close after the show, typically the day after, but weeknight shows mean that I have to get up early the next morning.  So after a recovery period -- one that I think at least two of us needed -- here we are.

First, the live webcast.  After months of toying around with air cards, cell phones, and their associated data plans, it turns out that what I had already in the beginning when I first started doing this -- a network card connected to 1982's free wifi -- was best.  Any bands that want to do live webcasts from 1982 can easily do it with just an old laptop, wifi access, and at least a webcam.  Now, I could comment on other venues' "webcast potential", but dang dudes, we gotta play out in venues other than 1982 to do that!  (Note to self:  start playing in other venues!)

Next, the bands.  I wanna say congrats to Paxico via Mexico for a successful first show!  (Or was it their first show?  I'm not sure.)  My first show was at...umm, I think...oh man, on an open mic night!  And at the same venue!  Except it was still called Common Grounds, and the attendance was much MUCH less.  :'(

I also want to send some mad propers to The Kung Fu Girls -- I really enjoyed the vocal mix when I was listening at the back.  I hope they enjoy their stay here in Florida...they must be at Pembroke Pines (or beyond) as I write this.  It's rare for touring bands to go all the way to South Florida, so I wish them well.  And I finally am glad to see Sweet City Action's set.  They, are, hmm, um, how you say, quite interesting?  It's hard to pinpoint their style of music, and I mean that as a compliment.  For one thing, they play their instruments really well; I had the same feeling of amazement afterwards when I see Select Start...it must be the violins.

]]> GP reminds you to vote, especially you FLORIDIANS. 2008-10-23T19:41:28-06:00 Ska show synopsis http://www.murpheek.com/archive.asp?NewsID=141&ct=2 First of all, to those of you who caught the show on the live webcast: OUR BAD!!  We somehow missed the power supply for the camera, so we ended up using the backup (a low-quality webcam/mic).  This backup plus the non-3G internet connection equals:  hella shitty webcast!

We'll do better next time; I've already set in motion a way into using an EVDO card for the webcast, which I've used before as a trial run, and it turned out to be the best option possible (while also being fairly reliable).  Sure there's free wifi in 1982, but what of the times when we don't play in 1982.  WHAT THEN, INTERNETS?!?

So, ho-kay, if you saw the show through the shitty webcast, you probably missed how lively Royal City Riot were, or how awesome The Set-Back were, or how good Chupaskabra sounded, or how energetic The Duppies were.  (Angry Banana had to stay put in Louisiana coz of the hurricane.)  Every band we played with that night were sooo good, and the crowd too!  And the latter was clearly evident in how soaked in sweat the floor was afterwards.  It felt bittersweet to leave that cauldron of happiness that night, but then my aching neck was saying otherwise.

Much love to everyone who managed to catch us live; don't start a mini-riot next time, ok guys?!?!  Also: if you have taken pictures of us, please let me know!  Or maybe you can post it on your flickr account and you can lead me to them!

]]> GP's been watching Me and You and Everyone We Know by Miranda July over and over 2008-09-01T20:28:58-06:00 Rigging the bubble machine http://www.murpheek.com/archive.asp?NewsID=135&ct=2 Apart from playing with two really good bands (have fun with the rest of the tour, The Menzingers and The Leftovers!), there were several things at the show worth mentioning that you may have missed if you opted to go to the two house shows that were apparently happening on the same night:
  • turning on the Magicpix mode on the camcorder (aka. "awesome mode") made the webcast a lot brighter
  • setup was much quicker, I actually timed it (yeah yeah, it's nerdy, whatevs)
  • rigging the bubble machine made it easier to turn on during the guitar solo
And we actually did all the things listed on our previous TODO list!  The result?  One of the best shows we've ever had...too bad we can't provide evidence as I've neglected to check the sound on the web stream.  Guess that goes on the next TODO list:
  • check the sound levels on the webstream while enabling Magicpix on the camcorder
  • rig the bubble machine further so that the ON button could be pressed even easier
Thanks for coming and enjoying the show everyone; we'd love to see you enjoy yourselves again.  The next opportunity for that is this Sunday at The Kickstand with touring bands Geoff and Barghetto.  And oh, it's only a $5 (donation) to get in.  BYOB!

]]> GP pressed the NO button on the bubble machine 2008-06-22T21:12:03-06:00 After the benefit show http://www.murpheek.com/archive.asp?NewsID=134&ct=2 Wednesday's benefit show was, um...kinda weird?  I mean, not that the bands were weird, no, I meant that the atmosphere -- however you want to define it -- was a little different than I was accustomed to.  Nevertheless, I wanted to thank you for coming out to see us, The Rochevanies, Max's Birthday, and Rubber Tramps; I think we raised a lot of money for Conscious Alliance that night.  Go team us!!

And special thanks and mad propers should rapidly be ClickOnce-deployed to Vilma for setting up the show and for baking the yummy cookies.  The same should go to Grooveshark for sponsoring the show, although it's hard to extend that appreciation without the free cookies.  (If you have desserts, gratitudes are easy to dispatch.)

I would be remiss in this synopsis if I didn't go over how we did on our previous TODO list.  Being remiss sucks!  And we should know:  we have a friggin' TODO list!  Anyway, we did everything in our previous list except for the sound check, which is typically reserved for the first band.  Since we would most likely play first on our next show, I think putting that task at the top of our next TODO list serves as a cool segue, albeit flimsy, into listing them as follows:
  • Do a sound check and play a song to test if we can hear each other
  • Place the laptop behind the sound board
  • Cut down the setup time even more

]]> GP plays some more Mario 3 2008-06-07T22:31:32-06:00 OK OK OK OK OK http://www.murpheek.com/archive.asp?NewsID=131&ct=2 Last time we played a show, we listed a bunch of "next time" line items we promised we would do for the next show.  Last night, we were able to put some of that into practice.  We (1) cut down the setup time for the light show, (2) were able to get the rust off, (3) actually friggin' pressed RECORD on the live stream this time (view the last 30 minutes of this 60-minute video here), and (4) turned off the lights so that the stobe lights would be more effective.

Unfortunately, (4) produced a live stream that was a bit too dark to view.  This looks like another episode of the NEXT TIMES:
  • Bring all extension cables
  • Use BRIGHTER lights next time - ixnay on the ack-blay ight-lay
  • Bring earplugs
  • Turn off the metronome and set the levels on the looper and amp, and
  • Actually do a stage sound check before doing a sound check against the board
The show turned out to be a coming-out party for Gnarly By Nature, who played with energy and happiness.  Roaring Twenties played great; they seem to be a tight-knit group.  And good to see Jon of Jon Doesn't Count again.  Hrm, we should play an acoustic show sometime, like, at a house party? WHATEVER HAPPENED TO HOUSE PARTIES?!?!

]]> GP congratulates Ronnie for an awesome first show 2008-05-15T20:41:50-06:00 Partying hard is hard hard hard http://www.murpheek.com/archive.asp?NewsID=127&ct=2 The show went really well last night, thank you gents and ladies who saw the show!  And extra mad extreme props to everyone who logged in and saw the live stream!  A surreal moment occurred last night while Chris and I were duck-taping the camera and USB mic onto the sound booth and people online were all like, "Haha, I hear duck tape":  at that point, I realized how cool and a little unnerving the whole webcasting thingy was.  I mean usually when I'm in a small corner in a very, very dark club, I don't expect people from Texas, Arizona, California, and Canada to be watching, but I guess that's a threshold that's similar to what many TV personalities have had to cross.  I must admit that I wasn't comfortable at first, but once I got into the mindset I was alright.

Some observations:
  • Having a light show triggered by foot pedals while singing and playing guitar is HARD HARD HARD!  It definitely affected my guitar play and has dramatically increased my setup time.  Next time, I SHALL STREAMLINE THIS SUCKA!
  • Despite my best attempts, I am rusty and a bit out-of-shape!  Not playing a show in ~3.5 years has taken its toll.  I have a feeling that, next time, I'll be OK!
  • I...I forgot to press RECORD during our performance.  Sorry, people who missed the show!  Next time, I will put that in my TODO list!
  • Apparently, we could have made the video much brighter on the webcast.  Next time, we'll know what config settings to mess around with!
  • The effect that I wanted for the light show could have been much cooler if there were no lights.  Again, NEXT TIME!

(Crap, I am a bad friend.) 2008-01-31T20:32:39-06:00 Blitzkrieg http://www.murpheek.com/archive.asp?NewsID=48&ct=2 With synergy coupled with arduous effort, it's amazing how much stuff can be accomplished in one week. Such was the case in the MPK camp, to recap:

The House Party at The Boy and the Knife house went without a hitch and everyone was cool -- wait, that's waaay too much an understatement. As you know, house parties are egregious for engendering noise complaints and overall indignation due to bad apples and unexpected dissensions. Considering that none of these have happened, and the fact that a next-door neighbor actually told us ebulliently to TURN THE MUSIC UP during our set, you'd understand why the show went so well.

Everyone was genuinely respectful. After being away from Gainesville for a long while, I've forgotten, among the many countless things, how great this community is.

I can't move on to the next subject until I give props to my homies who played alongside us. I gotta admit, Select Start stole the show. As I'm writing this, I'm listening to their CD, and I can't help thinking, when you strip everything down, all you can do is whistle melodies from memory, and I kept jumping back and forth between the past and present during their set. But simple childhood reminiscence and classical instruments aren't Select Start's only appeal, as potent as those two already are. When you see an SS show, you see how well-seasoned they are as musicians -- their close attention to detail is apparent and they have the most heartfelt renditions of VG music I've heard in a VG band. As a spectator, I felt level 99 intrigued. As a musician, I felt inspired to sharpen my skills. And as a fellow band on the bill, all of us felt honored. Thank you guys so much.

Before Pissing on Susie played, I didn't know what to expect other than SiLo's stage prescence. After his stint with The Monistats (who btw, recently released a CD), you come to expect that in-your-face attitude in any bands that he's in, and it shows in POS. Thanks for lending us the PA, even though it kept crapping out but made the set fun anyway. You my dawg. Craig and Peter then played a double-set in The Boy and the Knife to close the bill before 1am, and I must say I'm proud of my mates for doing this. They've come a long way and I'm excited for them.

I suppose I should mention something about our set other than the aforementioned ebullient next-door neighbor. The dancing and cavorting by everyone was something I dearly, dearly, 3 times dearly missed for the past 8 months. I also learned a new word which was used to describe MPK: "genki", which apparently means "happy and energetic" in Japanese. That makes me smile. Yay to all! Arr!

On Sunday we met Rob McGregor in Golden Tone Studios to start recording our CD. For three straight days we ran multi-hour marathon sessions on a minimal protein diet. Working with Rob, the consummate recording professional, was a pleasure and unique learning experience. I won't get into any details other than my observation that ours and Rob's principles, recording-wise and life in general, are pretty similar. If you've been checking out my moblog and Peter's livejournal, then you can see us at work.

After three days, our rough mix is done and we can't wait until you guys hear this. We're thinking of streaming a couple of songs either here or here so keep an eye out on that. Details on final mix are still being worked out. I don't want to say anything more than that. Quite honestly, I'm still a little fatigued from the flight and the show and the recording and the flight back to Texas.

All in all, this past week's activities put a lot things I've been experiencing for the past several months in Houston in perspective.

Thank you for coming out to Eddie C's for an incredible night of music -- it's like the energy never let up! Yay to Team Mascot for an awesome first show. Great jorb! Thanks also to SNMNMNM for steppin' up and rockin' out when Second Saturday's van broke down. And of course, you all know, Karmella's got Game. I got them to sign my copy of their EP. That's right, I'm a fanboy. Shush!

All in all this past weekend was a good trip -- got my El Indio and Bento fix (twice each!), had fun with Ted and his expensive camera, messed around with the Japanese song (a lot), scanned some new sticker/T-shirt designs, changed some lyrics for the 31st time and even opened up the possibility for some piano pieces -- which I scrapped for the show due to insufficient practice and hardware. It's pretty exciting, especially considering we practice together only once a month -- and we cram as much as we can into one madcap weekend! Iono, to me this is still a lot of fun, and besides, I derive a lot of pleasure out of just flying.

A February weekend should be just as exciting as we are preparing (read: emailing each other demos) for a show in Gainesville. More details will be posted here once all bands are confirmed.

As promised, a streaming version of "Red Rose" is now made available. Sorry for the non-instant update; after the show with Punchline and Rehasher, I've contracted a mild cold and it got a lot worse after the flight back -- luckily, there's some cool people here in Houston who went out of the way to drop off some Advil. That was a fun show, btw, I wish I could say more, but that was half a month ago and it feels a bit nostalgic talking about it now. But here goes anyway. We did our best with the japanese song, which we practiced for the first time that weekend. We've yet to record due to scheduling conflicts, but don't worry (and I'm mostly referring to myself), we will record eventually. Most of the night was a very honorable experience -- it's hard to believe that we've shared the stage with such established bands. I'm inspired.

I hope that everyone had as nice a holiday break as I did. Unfortunately for me, it's back to work, and it's not even 2004 yet. Quite lame. At any rate, we have a show planned with Second Saturday, Karmellas Game, and Team Mascot @ Eddie C's on January 19. As always, we try something new for every show (the japanese song was new for the previous one) -- so who knows what we're gonna do with this one.

Those kids are awesome and heartfelt and learning and doing their best which blows my mind and my heart. Not that I ever forget, but it reminds me of years when I didn't know how to forget myself and it reminds me of wonderful powers of music. I have lots of social theories about music, but it's difficult because we can't just stop our lives, and nothing makes us ten again. So thank you Whatever's Left guys. You rocked my world. Stay with it as long as it's positive. Thanks also for the SNMNMNM weekend. Thank you to My Fav'rite Dancer, shoeless wonder and My Hotel Year, who amazed and unsettled me. Thank you to the woman who brought me a stack of old fliers when I passed out. And Pat, thanks for bringing the evening together. And thank You for being there or reading, here.

The Shamrock and Common Grounds are about 2 blocks apart, and the former needed our PA for the night, so we decided to "practice" before the other bands showed up, which turned into actual show complete with crowd participation and GP, Peter and I all singing into one mic at once.

Meanwhile, 200 feet away, the Common Grounds crowd was on its feet courtesy of Sugardish, who really brought in a crowd. Thanks ladies (and Shermy)! By the time we hit the stage ourselves, it was Sept 28 and Peter got his birthday cake.....all over his chest and bass.

We'll be spending the next week practicing and putting "everything in its right place". Trevor is back on drums, and we're "optimistic" about our show at the Red Lion Pub in Boynton Beach (near West Palm Beach, FL) with SNMNMNM. We intend to spend Saturday on "Planet Telex" with Radiohead and SUPERGRASS.

As soon as the "morning bell" awakes us (assuming we sleep), it's back to Gainesville for a night of all ages fun with good ole' SNMNMNM at Rocks. It'll be a good time, but then again, "I might be wrong".

Thanks to everyone who came out to the show on Friday. I think Peter said something about feeling "extreme benevolence" around and that's about as close to what I can describe the night. So glad to be back. Thanks to Neptune 66 for filling in for Whole Wheat Bread and to One Pump Chump, it was a pleasure. Good, solid sets worthy of Homestar Runner references, but I won't do that here. Seriously.

In other news, the HOME Compilation is close to being done. I was assured this....really. Yeah yeah, I know I know. But you know what, I have no complaints whatsoever of them taking their time to make this an awesome CD. None. I only mention it here again because they have just completed a major phase of the process. Next time I mention it, it might be because it is released. Watch out for that.

But it's not like we've been slacking; we're still busily setting up this tour.

But before I go on, I have to at least mention something about our last performance. (If we don't, then you should start worrying.) Thanks for everyone that came out. Just because I'm thanking you a week after the fact doesn't mean it's less sincere -- in fact, the degree is greater, believe it or not: the better the show, the longer it takes for our wounds to heal. And what a show that was! Looking back, everything going awfully wrong SHOULD have been a foregone conclusion. I mean, look at what transpired:
1) Matt actually beat half of us in arriving to our practice space to get our equipment,
2) Peter suddenly disappeared when it was time for us to play, leaving us hanging and twirling our thumbs (he was actually getting more beer -- a act that is nothing to scoff at),
3) Craig and I had some miscommunication and ended up short on cables, which resulted in
4) my guitar cutting off repeatedly during the set, and lastly, and most importantly,
5) Eddie C's had a beer tab for us that was seemingly endless.
Despite all of this, we survived -- but don't expect another performance like that; gyrating the mic uncontrollably on stage is not something I'm going to make a habit of...unless...well, we'll see if that happens again...

Libyan Hitsquad came on after us and put on a solid set. I was satisfied. But then, The Monistats capped off the show and gave us bruises all over. Thanks a LOT, dudes! Overall, it was a good night, making new friends, talking, flirting, getting our hopes up to unhealthy heights, putting faces to screen names, shooting pool...good stuff. Now THESE are something that we want to make a habit of for this tour! Thank you, Pat, for asking us to play.

]]> GP(MPK) \m/ 2003-04-22T20:39:51-06:00 Another World Circuit http://www.murpheek.com/archive.asp?NewsID=25&ct=2 There are so many things to say about last Tuesday's show that I think I'm just going to follow Matt's advice and "forget all that 'scripted' engineering crap...and just be loose and let go." So here goes my rant:

Tuesday's show was, by far, one of my most gratifying experiences...ever. And that includes winning the Dream Fight against Mike Tyson in Punch-Out!! without using 007 373 5963. Libyan Hitsquad pumped us up like whoa. SNMNMNM made us dance like whoa. The Remedies rocked us like whoa, and it felt really good to "suit up" for them. I've never been as proud of being part of a line-up of such caliber, and I think shizon said it best: "damn....thats all i have to say....damn....that was an amazing show.....". Thanks again, Moe, for letting us play.

The day after, Peter, Craig and I watched the video that James filmed from our Eddie C's performance (btw, isn't it great that I assume that you all know all these names that I mention? hah!). Watch out for those videos on this site soon. It will be available when we re-design this site. Also, when we have the new layout ready (with new contents!), it will be located at our new URL. We've been vigorously trying to set up the new domain and as soon as it's fully updated, we'll redirect you (because we love you and we always think of you...unless you're not hot...but I digress).

Stickers, buttons, t-shirts! These are the things we are currently focused on as we prepare to go on our upcoming South by SouthEast tour: merchandizing! The Homeless Comp (as many have succinctly termed it) should be out in the next coming weeks so watch out for that (specifically, late April).

And speaking of our 2-week tour (May 10th-May 24th), we have a slight dilemma. Namely, we don't have a name for it (hahah, get it?). What should we call this tour? Post it in our guestbook! Bear in mind that this is the first time we are doing this, so there are plenty of puns/witty remarks than you can shake a stick at in thinking up a name for our endeavor. "Where no Murphee K has Gone Before" could be one. "Murphee K: Deflowered" is another. Hey, I never said I was good at titling tours. So please post your ideas and the one we choose gets free stuff.

We are currently setting up more shows before we head off on our "Murphee K: But Summer More Equal Than Others Tour". (You see? ]]> GP(MPK) out. 2003-03-21T20:37:50-06:00 Bevy of Thoughts http://www.murpheek.com/archive.asp?NewsID=24&ct=2 I had a bevy of thoughts throughout the night, most of which are entirely incoherent and gibberish when laid on paper.  Truth is, I was in a bit of a shock to start the day because of school, work, our last practice session, and having an article about us in the recent issue of Fusion Magazine.  But during our performance, I let my subconscious take over and it resulted in one of our most gratifying experiences.  We feel blessed to have such an enthusiastic audience, and I feel most blessed for being a part of the audience too!  I thoroughly enjoyed all the bands that I caught.  Most notably, In Passing was AMAZING (re: Caps Lock) and Today Doesn't Count -- that was a fun set! It goes to show that 'band + beer (re: lots of) = ensuing hilarity!'

we hadn't played out, hadn't practiced; we had hardly even spoken to each other in two weeks.  then two nights ago, we convened business-like at our own warehouse to rekindle the fire.  it was a lifeless exercise.  seemingly nothing happened.  then, the day of, i passed out three times.

last night, arriving separately, arriving late, we converged quietly on krieger's.  i wasn't down exactly, just bearing through. just watching.  but gradually, i relaxed and we had a good set.

it was really good to see friends come out.  good to play with the monistats and crash pad again.  and good to see lots of kids i don't know yet.  there to support all the bands and krieger's.

bracelet was great.  and i really enjoyed what morivivi was striving for.  felt good.  sadly, i was looking forward to daughters of the revolution but they couldn't make it.  i left early and missed in passing and my favorite punk band around, today doesn't count.

back to the positive, this was the best turnout i've seen at krieger's in a long time.  everyone was cool.  and i know a lot of people helped each other pushing cars out of the muddy parking lot.  if everyone keeps bringing friends, making friends and having fun, we can all make this a better and better community.

and of course, thank you to sterling and jorelle for pulling last night's show together.
]]> peter 2003-02-24T20:37:10-06:00 Sunday Bloody Sunday http://www.murpheek.com/archive.asp?NewsID=21&ct=2 Feb 9th should have sucked.  We were late to the venue, we had a shortened set and the police tried to shut us down for the 3rd time (nice try guys).  Once on stage there were false starts, bruised knees and guitars flying out of our hands.

It should have sucked, but it didn't.  It turned into our most fierce, desperate show; in other words, ROCK N ROLL.

We'll be back on Feb 22 -- same venue, different bands, same great time.

For those of you fortunate enough to not go through our unfriendly fate, feel free to fashion a feeble forbearance for the following fishy circumstances...in fact, if I had more forethought, I would have followed the simple rules of a drinking game I just made up:
1) If you agree to play at a house party without first confirming with the host(s), take a drink.
2) If you are taking multiple cars without ensuring that each have a cell phone or, at the very least, a beeper, take a drink.
3) If you are taking multiple cars and only one of them has access to the directions, take a drink.
4) If you assume that cops will not show up at a house party with live bands, take a drink.
Following these guidelines would not prevent the inevitable chagrin you will indubitably experience, but it would make possible that, by the end of the night, you wouldn't care. Actually, it would be a better idea to avoid playing this drinking game altogether by certifying that the elements for playing it does not exist.

This Sunday, Feb. 9th, will be a night devoid of F words as we will debut a couple of new songs at Krieger's. Come and join the festivities...err the fun...err damn.
