This was similar to the keyboard that was lent to me while I was in a band in Houston.  I played both keyboard and guitar for that band and, while it was fun, it was not easy.

So now this totals five instruments (drums, 2 guitars, 1 keyboard, 1 laptop) played by three people in MPK.  Chris was able to make his synth laptop going during the last show, and over the past several weeks, we've been practicing.

The next two shows will reveal how well we've been incorporating the new toys.  Details for these two weekend shows -- Sunday, May 31 @ 1982 Bar and Friday, June 5 @ Tim and Terry's -- can be found on our shows page.  And one of them is $FREE!!

As usual, we'll try to live webcast the shows, but I don't know if Tim and Terry's have wifi.  Maybe someone can let me know?  Hope to see you online!

It was a dark and stormy night...erm, I mean, it was a very cold night, and we happened to have arrived at our practice space while they were already in full practice swing.  So we proceeded to set up our gear, tuned our guitars, connected all our instruments, and started producing feedback on our amps for our first song.  And as Chris, Ronnie, and I hit our first chord...

ZAP!

The fuse blew out.

We all went outside and it became apparent from the darkness that the entire side of the building's electricity was shorted.  This of course affected Nomenclature too.  And that is how we first met.

So this coming Sunday at ~9pm, we get the see perhaps the logical conslusion to that story when we play at 1982 with the aforementioned Nomenclature and The Butterfly Theory.  We'll try to live webcast this for our out-of-towne friends.

Now onto a totally unrelated subject...

This week I downloaded IE8, and it broke Murphee K dot com for a while.  (Sorta like a zapped fuse box?)  But thankfully, I was using conditional comments in choosing the correct CSS file, so fixing it was easy.  I placed the conditional comment I used to fix the bug below, but I'm not 100% sure if this is the right usage for IE8.  I do know, however, that it works:

We have a show this Wednesday, February 25th at 1982 w/ Bo Coker, The Crash Moderns, Say When, Shotgun Diplomacy, and Call it Conflict.  We're playing around 9 or so, so come early!  We might also live webcast this show, depending on my laptop.  So maybe.

We've been working on three new songs!  One of those ("Nasaan Ka Ba") is a new "old" song I first wrote years ago but never played out in public.  The lyrics are written entirely in Tagalog -- which I'm currently fine-tuning -- and we're gonna debut it for the show on Wednesday.

As for the other two new songs, Chris and I are working on their lyrics since their music is done.  Personally, I like how the new songs turned out as they are indicative of the direction we're going as a three piece.  The plan is to include these new songs when we record in the studio in late March.

I, uh, I re-wrote the Chorus to "A Stubborn Star Story" for, like, the 31st time?  But!!  This is not as bad as you think:  I last re-wrote the song in late 2003!  And I think it now sounds a lot better than ever before.

One of my flickr pics was exhibited at the new Water exhibit at the Science Museum of Minnesota.  I visited it recently to make sure they weren't pulling my leg.  ;)

]]> New 'old' is the new new 2009-02-22T16:50:50-06:00 Playing with The Kung Fu Girls this Tuesday! http://www.murpheek.com/archive.asp?NewsID=143&ct=3 So, I cancelled by EVDO card.  And I cancelled it 31 days after activating the data plan, which is one day beyond the 30 days during which I can cancel it without getting hit by an early termination fee.  Hence, I had to pay the fee even though I didn't know about the limit.  Apparently, despite buying the card from eBay (which circumvented Sprint's factories), the 30-day limit still applied because they (Sprint) had to set up a new phone line for the service.  And, supposedly, if they set up a new line, there was a 2-year agreement that I implicitly agreed to, which is TOTAL BS.  I've had it with Sprint, but I'm sure the other companies are just as bad, or worse.  If anyone knows of any existing class action lawsuits involving this, I would seriously like to know.

ANYWAY.  Onto something less depressing...

Without the EVDO card, this means that this Tuesday, October 21, when we play with The Kung Fu Girls, Sweet City Action, and Paxico via Mexico at 1982 Bar, I may or may not be able to webcast the live show like usual.  I would have to rely on the free wifi at 1982 which, to me, still has the best upload speed, which is what ultimately led me to cancel my EVDO service.  You see, the last time we broadcasted, I had numerous technical problems with the card.  And even if I were able to connect to ustream's servers, the upload speed on it was still crap.  (I tested it in my apartment afterwards, and it was just shoddy.) Long story short, I had to get rid of the card; it was just not worth it.

So guys!  Try to tune in this Tuesday at the usual channels, and if the live stream is down, you know why.  If you're in town, come party with us, karate sytle!!
]]> GP texts you too much 2008-10-19T18:35:52-06:00 Punk/funk/rock 'n roll show this Thursday! http://www.murpheek.com/archive.asp?NewsID=142&ct=3 Guys!  I haven't posted since the last show coz we've been busy rehearsing some new material lately.  We can't wait to show them to you!  On one of them, however, well...you see...it's like...well, ho-kay, lyrics typically come last, and normally once the melody is set, the lyrics flow out.  I guess I can attribute a little of this to rust?  I mean, I haven't written lyrics since, um, 2004?  DUDES, HAS IT BEEN THAT LONG?!?!  Jebus.

Speaking of expunging rustiness, we have a show for you that will eviscerate any memories of that last show's crappy webcast!  I finally decided to keep an EVDO card, and hopefully it will make the webcast smoother.  If it goes well then maybe I can start webcasting other things, so let me know how it turns out, ok?!?!  I'll try to drop in once in a while and chat with y'all.

The show's gonna be this Thursday, Oct 2 at good ol' 1982 Bar.  Playing with us will be Mystery Machine, Sleepwalk Capsules, and The Love Drags.  We've never played with these guys before so let's show them some love!!

So I went to Grooveshark to check out both the sponsor of this show and to check out Grooveshark lite (which, as a co-worker swears by, was written in flex), and, yeah, I admit it has a nice interface.  I won't pretend to know how they got all those artists behind that shiny glass pane, but before I give them all the props in the world, I'll ask, "Guys, where's the new Mates of State album?"

I work for a company that participates in the NAB Show, an annual show held by the National Association of Broadcasters.  So, every first quarter of every year, there is a massive push by all the companies to come up with innovative ideas to demo at the show.

This year, I was tasked with developing an AWESOME chat application (emphasis: mine...and yours when you finally see it) that integrates with the shows and commercials that you see on your television.  (Read the real press release here.)  Now, what's interesting about this application was that it was conceived one late afternoon while chatting with the Vice President and General Manager of the company, basically just rambling about the cool things we could do in our industry.  It turns out, a co-worker of mine had a similar idea, and so lots of his ideas were integrated into this application.   This application, which I will call FanChat, because that's what it's called, was developed mainly by me but backed by years of experience by my unnamed co-worker.

Fast forward through all the patent filing, the designing, the end-to-end prototyping, the burnt midnight oils, and a last-minute push after being pulled off the project to work on another critical application, an early version of FanChat was unveiled at the NAB show, with much anticipation -- and some anxiety -- on my part.  That anxiety would soon be quelled first by relief and then elation.

Long story short, I won an award.

Well, not me, but my AWESOME chat application won a BroadcastEngineering Pick Hit award.  My reaction was best summed up by my unnamed co-worker: "we did it, we actually did it!!"  Yeah, I couldn't believe it either.

ANYHOO, between the days in which I was coding up this AWESOME chat application, I managed to find a new drummer for MPK.  Yay!  His name is Ronnie, and I really enjoy his enthusiasm.  That is all the compliments that you're getting for now, buddy.  TOUGH LOVE.

Also, we have a show on May 14th at 1982 w/ UK band Pendleton.  This will be broadcasted LIVE ON THE INTERNETS like last time (erm, hopefully, assuming my laptop doesn't burn out).  Guys in Pendleton: tell your UK friends to come watch and/or chat!  And then maybe, JUST MAYBE, we can finally come to an agreement around the spelling for colour/color.

So, ho-kay, if you haven't already heard, we are playing a show tomorrow (Jan 30th) at 1982 Bar, hooray!  We -- that's me, Will (from The Factor), Chris (from Forward), and Chris (from The Monistats) -- have been practicing together for about a couple of months now, and quite honestly, if it weren't for this show, we wouldn't have been practicing so hard and frequent.  But I think we're ready.

Whether or not I am ready -- given the live webcast and the impromptu light show that I plan on putting on -- remains to be seen.

Speaking of the live webcast, I do plan on broadcasting all 4 bands, so please stay for Hoyt & The Hotheads, then us, then The Monistats, and then Padded Cell.  And since the show at 1982 isn't exactly a public event, I can't broadcast anyone willy-nilly; the latest episode of TWiT actually made me realize the potential liability issues.  But ANYWAY, fans:  feel free to dance real silly!

Crap!  All this ranting and I still haven't talked about the comic!  OK, so Will has on a The Ergs! t-shirt because he's been trying to get me into the band despite of my insistence that I could never ever like any band where drummer/singer Mikey Erg was involved in more than Dirt Bike Annie.  In fact, if you go to the live show, you'll see the influence DBA has had on me.  I guess all I'm saying is that I'll try not to hold DBA against them anymore, k?

It's been over a year since I've performed in public.  Plus I still do not have firm grip on the song I'm performing since my instructor told me about the event a week ago.

  • Craig was busy with work and running around Florida.
  • GP was busy playing keyboards/guitar with Heist at Hand in Houston.  He's also created a content management system for murpheek dot com via ASP.  On top of that, he's been busy and hard at work.
In other words, we've been busy, kapeesh?

So now, take a look around and bask in the awesomeness that is our databased website!  It took me a while since I had NO FRIGGIN' IDEA how to start until glypher told me about IIS in XP.  Err, um, that probably doesn't make sense to some of you (sorry, mom) so I'll spare y'all the excruciating details.  All in all, this means that this site is now easily updatable and will soon be updatable from the road.

Also, check out my moblog.  (Moblog = mobile phone + weblog.  I think.)

Our focus has shifted to recording our EP.  We haven't worked out all of the gory details yet, so I can't give you a time frame, not even an estimated one.  Know, however, that this has become our primary goal as we've relegated playing shows secondary.

Over the past couple of days, I have discovered, to my complete bewilderment and sheer joy, that there's two (count 'em TWO) live bands in Gainesville that play video game music covers. They are the NESkimos and Select Start.

And having been "raised" on video game music (I first learned the piano via figuring out the tunes from Megaman 2 and 3 with my mom's Casio), I became an instant fan -- *before* I even listened to their mp3s. But after doing so, it turns out that both are as good as, if not better than, that crazy (and more popular) VG band from Arizona, the Minibosses. It's funny though coz if it wasn't for the Minibosses, I wouldn't have even heard of these NSF-rendering Gainesvillians. Long story short: the Minibosses were featured on a Wired Magazine article which mentions a Florida rival (NESkimos) who then updated their page recently to introduce Select Start.

I'll be trying my damnest to check out both in the future. I suggest you all check them out because they don't just blatantly cover vgmusic -- they put their own spin to them. Now, how is this related to Murphee K? Dark Helmet: "Absolutely nothing!" Well, actually, we DO have two songs that have roots in vgmusic. I won't tell you which, but one of them is in Japanese. So...pardon my enthusiasm for supporting them.

Enough rant! We do have some cool stuff to tell you about here in MPK™. On Feb 21st, we are playing a show with Orlando's Overdale as part of Rock 104's Locals Only Series. (And allow me quell this fire quickly -- 3 of us still reside in Gainesville.) Overdale consists of the same members of Spitvalves, and I'm psyched because I've seen the Spitvalves rock it, but I've yet to see them as Overdale. From what I've been told, they sound nothing like the Spitvalves, but I'm not expecting anything less than a good show by these guys. We are either going to open the show or play salami in a delicious rock sandwich depending on the third act that's still yet to be determined. As always, when we get the w3rd, we'll update the site. Until then, I'm sorry, but the princess is in another castle.

As promised, a streaming version of "Red Rose" is now made available. Sorry for the non-instant update; after the show with Punchline and Rehasher, I've contracted a mild cold and it got a lot worse after the flight back -- luckily, there's some cool people here in Houston who went out of the way to drop off some Advil. That was a fun show, btw, I wish I could say more, but that was half a month ago and it feels a bit nostalgic talking about it now. But here goes anyway. We did our best with the japanese song, which we practiced for the first time that weekend. We've yet to record due to scheduling conflicts, but don't worry (and I'm mostly referring to myself), we will record eventually. Most of the night was a very honorable experience -- it's hard to believe that we've shared the stage with such established bands. I'm inspired.

I hope that everyone had as nice a holiday break as I did. Unfortunately for me, it's back to work, and it's not even 2004 yet. Quite lame. At any rate, we have a show planned with Second Saturday, Karmellas Game, and Team Mascot @ Eddie C's on January 19. As always, we try something new for every show (the japanese song was new for the previous one) -- so who knows what we're gonna do with this one.

Tonight, within these same confined spaces I dub 'the paragraphs after the first,' I'll finish typing up the updates.  There's a lot of new stuff on the site to talk about, so I promise to be prompt.  Or you can discover the new stuff yourself.  Be adventurous!  And bring that same spirit to Eddie C's and go see Cocytus.

Back already?  That's awesome!  Ok, here goes.

A whole buncha sections were updated since the last post (with ACTUAL content).  They are found here, aqui, dito, hoko [Edit: link removed] and n'ya.

The Bio section reveals our band origins and individual bios, while the Booking section contains our 'band bio' which I felt was necessary.

The Merch section lists Murphee K merchandise.  As a reminder, we're trying to get rid of our shirts.  (Only Adult Medium shirts remain.)  I'm currently researching ways of selling these online other than just emailing us.  Anyone have any ideas?  Paypal?  CCNow?  Cafepress?  If you have an awesome tip, the fastest and most self-gratifying way of telling us is via our guestbook -- and it shall be known how much of a badass you are!  It will be much appreciated.

Lastly, since mp3.com is currently dead, I updated the Music link to point to a new section on the site.  The songs you used to access through mp3.com are temporarily down until murpheek dot com is back up and running (Peter is on top of that).  I did, however, manage to record a new song, and it's downloadable [Edit: not anymore :P, 12/04]. It's called "Nusumenai Houseki".  It's in Japanese. I don't speak Japanese.  Clearly I didn't pen it.  But the style is Murphee K and I hope you like it.  Be forewarned: it's might sound weird at first, so it could take a little getting used to.  We're trying to debut this song for our show with Punchline | My Hotel Year | Bayside | The Goodwill on Dec 15th @ Eddie C's (an early show in which we're playing first!).  No promises though.  Speaking of new songs, I re-wrote "Stubborn Star Story" again.  I swear, I must've re-written that song at least 30 times already.

That's all that's new with regards to site-related topics.  Hopefully, that should keep you busy.  Speaking of busy, we're recording that same weekend of Dec 15.  That's hott.  Houston's treating me fine and all's well.  I've been able to concentrate in recording demos and writing new songs and, I think, being able to record the way I used to is a sign of good things to come.
]]> GP(MPK) cannot, however, afford a good night's sleep. 2003-12-03T20:50:35-06:00 Twice in one night! http://www.murpheek.com/archive.asp?NewsID=35&ct=3 On Saturday (Sept 27th) we played two shows in one night.

The Shamrock and Common Grounds are about 2 blocks apart, and the former needed our PA for the night, so we decided to "practice" before the other bands showed up, which turned into actual show complete with crowd participation and GP, Peter and I all singing into one mic at once.

Meanwhile, 200 feet away, the Common Grounds crowd was on its feet courtesy of Sugardish, who really brought in a crowd. Thanks ladies (and Shermy)! By the time we hit the stage ourselves, it was Sept 28 and Peter got his birthday cake.....all over his chest and bass.

We'll be spending the next week practicing and putting "everything in its right place". Trevor is back on drums, and we're "optimistic" about our show at the Red Lion Pub in Boynton Beach (near West Palm Beach, FL) with SNMNMNM. We intend to spend Saturday on "Planet Telex" with Radiohead and SUPERGRASS.

As soon as the "morning bell" awakes us (assuming we sleep), it's back to Gainesville for a night of all ages fun with good ole' SNMNMNM at Rocks. It'll be a good time, but then again, "I might be wrong".
