The native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park are looking a little better this week. Some areas received almost 2 inches of rain over the weekend. Rose, Hughes, and White Oak Canyon are doing well. For more information on access to the Park streams, see the book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park. A stealthy approach is recommended. Mornings and evenings are the best times to fish. Water temperatures are staying in the low to mid 60's. There are not any major hatches occurring right now so we are relying on terrestrial patterns like the flies listed below.

The North Fork and South Fork of the Shenandoah River are looking a little better this week. Most areas received .6 to 2 inches of rain over the weekend. The North Fork has a little discolored/murky water from New Market to Edinburg from the feeder stream run-off. It will clear out quickly and is not causing problems. We had several anglers that did well on the North Fork yesterday, mostly with poppers. The South Fork flows have improved and we did well with poppers earlier this week. The water temperatures are running in the high 70's to low 80's.

Best Areas to Fish: shady banks, around grass beds and downed trees, along cobblestone bottoms where natural crayfish are found

We are getting a little rain but the North and South Fork of the Shenandoah River remain low and clear but definitely fishable. Water temperature is running around 80 degrees, so leave the waders at home and "wet wade". We've had a few anglers coming in this week to get wading staffs. These are highly recommended --Yankee Fork Wading Staff

Despite the rain showers the native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park remain low and clear. Plan to fish in the mornings as the water temperatures are cooler. If you get to the stream and the water temperature is 67 or higher, plan to fish another day or go to a smallmouth bass river. The trout are wary so a stealthy approach is needed, so stay low and sneak. Water levels are better by coming into the streams from the lower boundaries. A good reference book for hatch charts, reading the water, and access to the streams is the book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park.

Recommended flies:

Mr. Rapidan Dry size 16 or18

Mr. Rapidan Midge Dry size 18

Murray's Flying Beetle size 16

Mr. Rapidan Ant size 16 or 18

Murray's Oakworm size 16

Murray's Housefly size 16

Fish these on a Murray's Classic 7.5ft 6X Leader. Mash the barbs down on your flies and try to return the brook trout to the water within 30 seconds.

Both the North and South Fork of the Shenandoah River are low, clear, and fishable. The North Fork is best for wading from Mount Jackson to Woodstock. The South Fork is best for kayaking and wading from Shenandoah downstream to Front Royal.

With the clear water, the smallmouth are making us work harder. Before you enter the water, make a game plan on where you should be standing and where you should be fishing. Look for areas that provide protection for the bass including shady banks, downed trees, around grass beds and ledges. Wade as stealthy as you can and cast down and across stream. There are plenty of little minnows and crayfish that the smallmouth are taking advantage of. Therefore we have started using smaller sized flies.

Fly Recommendations:

Shenk's White Streamer size 8 (this can be fished as a dropper below a #4 popper)

Rubber Leg Nymph, Brown size 8

Murray's Marauder, brown or olive size 8

Kraft's Clawdad size 6

Olive Dragonfly Nymph size 6

Shenandoah Blue Popper size 6

Murray's Sunfish Slider size 6 or 8

Murray's Chugger, Frog size 6 or 8

Fish these on a Murray's Bright Butt 9ft 2X or 3X Leader.

Water temperatures are currently in the high 70's so we are still "wading wet" with supportive boots and shoes made by Korkers and Orvis.

UPDATE 7/23/26 The North Fork of the Shenandoah River is fishable as of this morning. The muddy water has cleared enough that all sections of the North Fork are fishable.

Original Post 7-22-26 Some heavy thunderstorms rolled through the area last evening producing about half-inch of rain in most areas. The Harrisonburg area received about 2 inches of rain. Therefore the North Fork of the Shenandoah River is muddy around the New Market and Mount Jackson area this morning evening though the flows look good. Edinburg and Woodstock are clear and fishable as of 9.45am but the muddy water will be filtering its way downstream over the next day or so. A little stained color is actually great for fishing but if it is mud color, try again another day.

The South Fork of the Shenandoah River is fishable especially upstream and downstream of the Luray area. There are many public boat landings on the South Fork which is more suitable for floating. With the water levels that we currently have, wading is also an option especially from Bixler Bridge to Foster's Landing.

Cast down and across stream with streamers and nymphs. Fish topwater deer hair bugs and poppers along the shady banks and downed trees. Best times to fish: early mornings and late evenings.

Top Flies for this Week:

Murray's Marauder, brown, olive or chartreuse size 8 --chartreuse works well with slightly stained water color

Murray's Road Kill Nymph, black size 6 or 8

Olive Dragonfly Nymph size 6

Bombshell Poppers (these are new to our product line after our guides have been testing them for the last month--with excellent results)

Damsel Olive Nymph size 10--this works well as a dropper below a Popper

Clouser Crayfish, Olive size 6

Not much has changed on the brook trout streams so it is basically the same as our report from last week. The native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park are receiving just enough rain to keep the streams adequate for fishing. Best time to fish is early mornings when the water temperatures are cooler. Take your stream thermometer and if the water temperature is over 67 degrees then turn around and leave the brook trout alone. Take a hike and enjoy the scenery or plan to go smallmouth bass fishing.

Our customers are doing well by coming into the streams from the lower boundaries. Use a cautious approach and try not to fish behind someone. What they didn't catch, they have already spooked. Mash your barbs down and try not to have the brookies out of the water more than 30 seconds. These small steps will help preserve the native brook trout for another day/another angler.

Recommended flies:

Murray's Flying Beetle size 14, 16

Mr. Rapidan Ant size 14, 16

Hi-Viz Ant size 16, 18

Murray's Yellow Jacket Dry size 14, 16

Barbless Beetle, Pink size 14, 16

Murray's Housefly size 14, 16

Fish these on a Murray's Classic 7.5ft 6X leader.

Smallmouth Bass Streams Fly Fishing Report - July 8, 2026

Some areas received 2+ inches of rain last evening but both the North Fork and the South Fork of the Shenandoah River are looking good this morning. In fact, we are conducting trips on the South Fork today. Some areas might have a "little stained" appearance especially where the feeder streams run into the river, but that will clear quickly.

The North Fork of the Shenandoah River is good for wading from Mount Jackson downstream to Woodstock. The South Fork is great for floating in kayaks or wading from Bixler Bridge to Fosters Landing.

Early mornings and late evenings are the best time to be on the water. If fishing in the afternoon on a sunny day, concentrate on the shady banks, downed trees or around grass beds. Water temperatures are running in the high 70's.

Recommended flies for this week:

Murray's Chugger Frog, size 4

Shenandoah Blue Popper, size 4 (remove the weed guard)

Boss Bug Popper (frog or damsel) size 4

Woolly Bugger, Olive size 6

Shenk's White Streamer size 8

Mouserat size 6

Fish these on a Murray's Bright Butt or Bass Bug 9ft 2X Leader. We recommend using a 9ft 7-weight fly rod like the Scott Centric, Orvis Clearwater or St. Croix Imperial.

We have many anglers that want to fish the river or ponds for bluegill. sunfish & perch. Our Murray's Panfish Fly Assortment is perfect for any angler and is great for kids just starting out.

We have a few openings in our Half Day Fly Fishing Lessons on July 11 & July 15 if you are looking to learn more about fly fishing for smallmouth bass. Great intro to fly fishing.

Barbless Beetle, Pink size 14, 16

Murray's Housefly size 14, 16

Fish these on a Murray's Classic 7.5ft 6X leader.

The native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park are getting low. We have done well on some of the larger streams in the Park but if we do not get some rain in the next week or so the fishing will be very tough. Stay low and hide your approach. Try not to fish behind someone as what they didn't catch, they have already spooked. Better water levels are by coming in from the lower boundaries of the Park.

Both the North Fork and South Fork of the Shenandoah River are low, clear and fishable. The North Fork is best for wading from Mount Jackson to Strasburg. The South Fork of the Shenandoah River is best for wading and floating. There are many opportunities to do combo float/wade trips on the South Fork. Don't be afraid to beach the kayak and wade out on the many limestone ledges that run across the river, Best time to fish is early morning and the last two hours before dark. If fishing during the day when the sun is bright, fish along the shady banks and downed trees. Water temperatures are in the high 70's so leave the waders at home and wade wet with just wading boots/shoes.

Hot flies for this week:

Native Brook Trout--We are getting alerts this morning from Shenandoah National Park that the Lower Whiteoak Canyon parking area off of Weakley Hollow Road is currently closed and inaccessible due to flooding on the roadway. We have had several inches of rain over the last few days causing the lower boundaries of the streams to be high as this extra water makes its way down the mountain. If you plan to fish the SNP streams, as I stated toward the end of last week, go into the streams from the upper headwaters off the Skyline Drive. This is the only way that you will get above this extra water. Be extra careful while hiking and watch for downed trees and trail closures. Sign up for Shenandoah Alerts by texting SHENALERTS to 888777. Any time there are closures, re-openings, or other important safety-related alerts, subscribers will receive a notification via text. You may unsubscribe at any time. I feel you will have better fishing toward the end of the week but if you must get out use the flies below:

5/28/26 Update-- All of the local stocked trout streams are carrying extra water. Passage Creek in Fort Valley is full, slightly discolored but fishable..

Both the North Fork and South Fork of the Shenandoah River are currently high and muddy and not fishable. If you plan to go bass fishing within the next week, watch the levels. Typically under 500CFS on the North Fork in Mount Jackson is suitable for wading. Typically under 1000 CFS on the South Fork in Luray is suitable for wading. I expect it is going to be at least the weekend before conditions improve. Go Brook Trout Fishing or venture out to one of the Stocked Trout Streams - which are becoming too warm for trout but are warm enough now to produce good Smallmouth Bass fishing.

Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - Update May 23, 2026

Update for May 23, 2026 We have received almost 3 inches of rain in the last few days. For this weekend I would recommend fishing the native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park by coming into the streams from the Skyline Drive or headwaters of the streams in the higher elevations. This will allow for better water levels. Use caution while hiking and wading around slippery rocks and downed trees. The lower boundaries of the streams will have extra water and will need a few days to return to normal.

Originally posted May 20--The native brook trout streams are low, clear and fishable. We are getting some great dry fly action despite the low water levels. Plan to come into the streams from the lower boundaries for better water levels. Also plan ahead--some of the streams in the Shenandoah National Park hold up better than others during low water levels. We have been receiving a few rain showers which has helped and over the next few days we are expected to receive more. I cannot stress enough--stay low and hide your approach! The trout are very wary.

Best flies this week:

Mr. Rapidan Dry size 16

Murray's Flying Beetle size 14

Shenk's Sulphur Dry size 16

Klinkhammer, orange size 16

Stubby Chubby size 16

for droppers use a Mr. Rapidan Soft Hackle Nymph, Olive size 16 or Perdigon Nymph size 16

fish these on a Murray's Classic 7.5ft 6X Leader or Mountain 6ft 6X Leader

Stocked Trout Streams--Update for May 23, 2026 All of the local stocked trout streams are currently high and muddy and unfishable. It will take a few days to clear up.

original post on May 20--All of our local stocked trout streams are low and clear. They probably will not be stocked again until October as the DWR does not stock these streams in the summer. The DWR is still stocking a few streams throughout Virginia--visit their website for the latest stocking schedule.

Recommended flies for rainbows & browns:

Murray's Flying Beetle size 14

Mr. Rapidan Dry size 16

Murray's Crayfish, Olive size 10

Murray's Hellgrammite (regular weighted) black size 10

Both the North Fork and South Fork of the Shenandoah River are clear and fishable. We are expected to get some rain in the next few days which will improve the water levels. Water temperatures have been in the 70's the last few days. Best fishing has been early morning and late afternoon to evening hours when the sun is off the water. Some anglers are still using chest high waders while some have converted over to wet wading. Wade as carefully as you can and fish down and across stream.

Best Recommended Flies:
