The North Fork of the Shenandoah River is improving. It is full, slightly discolored and carrying some extra flow--enough that we don't suggest wading just yet. It would be fishable by floating. The South Fork of the Shenandoah is still carrying extra water and is discolored.
Native Brook Trout--We are getting alerts this morning from Shenandoah National Park that the Lower Whiteoak Canyon parking area off of Weakley Hollow Road is currently closed and inaccessible due to flooding on the roadway. We have had several inches of rain over the last few days causing the lower boundaries of the streams to be high as this extra water makes its way down the mountain. If you plan to fish the SNP streams, as I stated toward the end of last week, go into the streams from the upper headwaters off the Skyline Drive. This is the only way that you will get above this extra water. Be extra careful while hiking and watch for downed trees and trail closures. Sign up for Shenandoah Alerts by texting SHENALERTS to 888777. Any time there are closures, re-openings, or other important safety-related alerts, subscribers will receive a notification via text. You may unsubscribe at any time. I feel you will have better fishing toward the end of the week but if you must get out use the flies below:

Stocked Trout Streams

5/28/26 Update-- All of the local stocked trout streams are carrying extra water. Big Stoney Creek west of Edinburg is very full, murky but is fishable by using heavier weighted flies and Murray's Fluorocarbon Leaders. Passage Creek in Fort Valley is full, slightly discolored but fishable..

Both the North Fork and South Fork of the Shenandoah River are currently high and muddy and not fishable. If you plan to go bass fishing within the next week, watch the levels. Typically under 500CFS on the North Fork in Mount Jackson is suitable for wading. Typically under 1000 CFS on the South Fork in Luray is suitable for wading. I expect it is going to be at least the weekend before conditions improve. Go Brook Trout Fishing or venture out to one of the Stocked Trout Streams - which are becoming too warm for trout but are warm enough now to produce good Smallmouth Bass fishing.

Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - Update May 23, 2026

Update for May 23, 2026 We have received almost 3 inches of rain in the last few days. For this weekend I would recommend fishing the native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park by coming into the streams from the Skyline Drive or headwaters of the streams in the higher elevations. This will allow for better water levels. Use caution while hiking and wading around slippery rocks and downed trees. The lower boundaries of the streams will have extra water and will need a few days to return to normal.

Originally posted May 20--The native brook trout streams are low, clear and fishable. We are getting some great dry fly action despite the low water levels. Plan to come into the streams from the lower boundaries for better water levels. Also plan ahead--some of the streams in the Shenandoah National Park hold up better than others during low water levels. We have been receiving a few rain showers which has helped and over the next few days we are expected to receive more. I cannot stress enough--stay low and hide your approach! The trout are very wary.

Best flies this week:

Mr. Rapidan Dry size 16

Murray's Flying Beetle size 14

Shenk's Sulphur Dry size 16

Klinkhammer, orange size 16

Stubby Chubby size 16

for droppers use a Mr. Rapidan Soft Hackle Nymph, Olive size 16 or Perdigon Nymph size 16

fish these on a Murray's Classic 7.5ft 6X Leader or Mountain 6ft 6X Leader

Stocked Trout Streams--Update for May 23, 2026 All of the local stocked trout streams are currently high and muddy and unfishable. It will take a few days to clear up.

original post on May 20--All of our local stocked trout streams are low and clear. They probably will not be stocked again until October as the DWR does not stock these streams in the summer. The DWR is still stocking a few streams throughout Virginia--visit their website for the latest stocking schedule.

Recommended flies for rainbows & browns:

Mr. Rapidan Dry size 16

Murray's Crayfish, Olive size 10

Native Brook Trout Streams-- All of the native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park are low and clear but definitely fishable. Better water levels are by coming into the streams from the lower boundaries of the Park limits. Use a stealthy approach and stay low as the trout are very wary. Several hatches are occurring--Caddisflies, Little Yellow Stoneflies and Sulphurs. Dry fly action is great but on rainy or cloudy days a dry with a nymph dropper is the ticket. Best time to fish is early morning and late afternoon into the evening hours when the sun is off the water. We are getting some topwater popper action during these times especially on cloudy days or once the sun is off the water. Water temperature is around high 60's to low 70's.

The native brook trout are actively feeding on dry flies that match the current hatches. We are seeing March Browns, Light Cahills, Caddisflies and Little Yellow Stoneflies. The stream levels are lower than normal for this time of year but by using a stealthy approach and staying low anglers are picking up several brookies in each pool. The best water levels are by coming into the streams from the lower boundaries of the Shenandoah National Park. Don't be afraid to hike in for about 30 minutes to get away from other anglers. Good reference book: Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park helps with hatch charts, reading the water, stream access and much more.

Recommended flies for this week:

Mr. Rapidan Dry size 16

Klinkhammer, orange size 16

Near Nuff Mayfly size 16

Light Cahill Dry size 16

Mr. Rapidan Delta Wing Caddis, Olive size 16

Murray's Little Yellow Stonefly Dry size 16

If you want to use a dry with a dropper--add a Perdigon Nymph olive size 16 or Mr. Rapidan Soft Hackle Nymph brown size 16 below the dry fly. Fish all of these on a Murray's Mountain 6ft 6X or Murray's Classic 7.5ft 6X leader. To help in releasing the brook trout, use barbless hooks or mash the barbs down.

Stocked Trout Streams

The stocked trout streams are low and clear. The DWR will wrap up their stocking schedule within the next few weeks. We have a few anglers landing a few rainbows on the local stocked trout streams in the deeper pools. The trout are wary so wade carefully.

Recommended flies for this week:

Murray's Hellgrammite size 8

Mr. Rapidan Dry size 14

Murray's Crayfish, olive size 10

Murray's Marauder, black or brown size 10

Rubber Leg Nymph, size 8

Mr. Rapidan Soft Hackle Nymph, olive size 10

Anglers often make the mistake of standing in water that should have been fished first. Floating would be best on the South Fork of the Shenandoah River.

Hot Flies for this week:

Both the North Fork and South Fork of the Shenandoah River are clear and fishable. We are not catching as many bass as we do in the summer but we are finding a few nice size bass. By fishing big flies down deep we are providing a mouthful for the bigger bass. Fish low and slow in the deeper water. Water temps are running around mid 50's so bring the chest high waders.

Recommended flies:

Murray's Magnum Darter size 4

Murray's Marauder Brown, size 6

Murray's Madtom Sculpin, black size 4

Murray's Heavy Hellgrammite, black size 4

Murray's Magnum Hog Sucker size 4

Murray's Marauder, Chartreuse size 6

A 9ft 7-weight 4pc fly rod with a sinking tip fly line or sinking leader is recommended with these flies. The Scott Centric 9ft 7-weight, Orvis Clearwater 9ft 7-weight or St. Croix Imperial 9ft 7-weight are some that we recommend and promote in our Summer Fly Fishing Schools.

There are several hatches occurring on the native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park-- Quill Gordon, Blue Quills and Caddisflies. March Browns will be showing up soon. The stream levels are holding steady for now. Stay low and be stealthy on these small streams. The streams in the Northern and Central sections of the Park are doing well by either coming into the streams from the upper reaches off the Skyline Drive or the lower boundaries. A good reference book--Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park.

The native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park are doing well. We are seeing Quill Gordons and Caddisflies on the streams. The Blue Quills will be starting very soon. There are many streams in the Shenandoah National Park so be willing to hike and explore to get to some good streams. The book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park is a good reference for hatch charts and access to the different streams. Or if you prefer you can also watch a video. The key to success is to stay low and use a dry with a dropper fly rig. The water levels are holding steady for now.

The Park is conducting a prescribed burn today April 1 so some areas are closed. Weather permitting, fire personnel plan to conduct a prescribed fire Wednesday, April 1, in Big Meadows (mile 51). Visitors should slow their speeds and turn their headlights on when driving through smoke. Access to Rapidan Road and areas of Big Meadows west of Rapidan Road will be restricted during the prescribed fire. Areas of Big Meadows west of Rapidan Road will be closed during the operation through Thursday, April 2. For more updates, visit their website.

I've had customers asking about Little Stoney. The FR92 into the top of Little Stoney is planned to be open sometime today. Use the same flies, techniques, and equipment listed above on this stream. Want to learn more about the native brook trout fishing on this stream? We have a few openings left in our Fly Fishing Schools on April 13, 20, 27 and May 4. Fly Rod and Reel Outfits are provided for the school.

Now let's move onto the stocked trout streams. Saturday April 4 is Heritage Day on several streams. Passage Creek in Fort Valley around the Elizabeth Furnace Campground and Hawksbill in Luray are two of the local streams that participate in Heritage Day. These streams are closed to fishing on Friday April 3 and open for fishing at 9am on Heritage Day. For a complete list of the Heritage Day Waters, visit the DWR website.

The North Fork of the Shenandoah River looked absolutely tempting as I crossed over it this morning. Water levels are ideal and clarity is good. There are access spots from New Market to Strasburg that are suitable for wading. For a long full day float in a kayak, put in at Headley Road and take out at the Strasburg Park. For a shorter float, put in at Deer Rapids and take out at Strasburg Park. Use a 9ft 7-weight fly rod with bigger, heavier flies and fish as deep and slow as you can. The South Fork of the Shenandoah River is clear and fishable especially by floating. We prefer the CFS to be less than 1,000 for wading and we are right on the edge of that at the time of this report. Just be cautious if you plan to wade. Bring the chest high waders as the water temperature is running around 50 degrees.

Recommended flies:

Murray's Tungsten Cone Head Marauder, black or olive size 4

Murray's Magnum Darter size 4

Murray's Magnum Hog Sucker size 4

Murray's Marauder, Chartreuse size 6

Bass Stonefly Nymph size 4

Fish down and across stream. A sink tip line is recommended but you can also use the Scientific Angler Sonar Leaders to get your flies down.

The North Fork of the Shenandoah River is full but fishable. If you are wading I would concentrate on New Market to Edinburg area for easier wading (just be cautious). A wading staff is recommended. If you are looking for a quick float, put in at the Hollingsworth access of the Seven Bends State Park and take out at the Lupton access. There are other areas to float on the North Fork but be mindful of where the dams are. Most of them are not legal or safe to go around.

The South Fork of the Shenandoah River is currently to high for good fishing.

Water temperature is in the 40's so plan on going in the afternoons after the temperatures have had time to warm a little. Use big flies as slowly as you can across the stream bottom. A Sink Tip line and Sonar Sink leaders are recommended. Read more about Sinking Fly Lines and their application in our "Understanding Sinking Fly Lines" blog post.

Native Brook Trout Streams--The Shenandoah National Park Streams are full but fishable. The Skyline Drive remains closed in certain areas due to snowy/icy conditions. Check their website for updates. I feel sure it will be reopened in all areas by the weekend.

Many of the Quill Gordon mayfly nymphs are reaching their full size and moving to the lower sections of the riffles to develop their wings and swim to the surface of the stream as the emerger. A very effective technique is to fish the Mr. Rapidan Emerger size 14 upstream tight to the base of the above riffles. A gentle rod lifting motion usually prompts a strike from the trout. Some anglers prefer using a Mr. Rapidan Parachute Dry size 14 with a Mr. Rapidan Emerger size 14 as a dropper.

Other recommended flies this week:

Murray's Purple Dun Dry size 14

Murray's Near Nuff Mayfly Dry size 14

Quill Gordon Dry size 14

Mr. Rapidan Delta Wing Caddis, Tan size 14

Mr. Rapidan Soft Hackle Nymph, Olive size 14

Murray's Caddis Pupa, Tan size 14

Mr. Rapidan Bead Head Nymph size 14

Fish all of these on a Murray's Mountain Leader 6ft 5X or Murray's Classic 7.5ft 5X Leader. For more information on the native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park, read the book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park.

Fly Fishing Schools--Spring 2026

We still have some openings in our Mountain Trout Fly Fishing Schools in the George Washington National Forest. Open Dates: April 13, 20, 27 and May 4

Stocked Trout Streams

All of the local stocked trout streams are clear and fishable. Anglers are doing well with heavier nymphs and streamers. With the extra water from last week, the trout were able to spread out. Passage Creek in Fort Valley was stocked last week. The VADWR will continue to stock streams over the next month, so check their website for updates.

Recommended flies:

We were able to get on the Shenandoah River this week and land a few smallmouth. The North Fork of the Shenandoah River is in beautiful shape.
Within the last week we have had some great days on the native brook trout streams in the Shenandoah National Park. For the best water levels come into the streams from the upper reaches off the Skyline Drive. For more information on the streams and hatches, see the book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park. We saw some mayflies and caddisflies this week.

Recommended flies for this week:

Mr. Rapidan Dry size 14

Mr. Rapidan Delta Wing Caddis, Tan size 14

Mr. Rapidan Bead Head Nymph size 14

Murray's Olive Caddis Pupa, size 14

Mr. Rapidan Soft Hackle Nymph, Olive size 14

Perdigon Nymph, Olive size 14

A dry fly/dropper rig is recommended if you are familiar with it. Use a Murray's Mountain 6ft 5X Leader with the flies above. Fly rods that are 6.5ft to 7.5ft long that handle a 3-weight fly line are recommended for the small native brook trout streams. Check out our Fly Rod/Reel Combos

Trout Streams Fly Fishing Report - Update March 7, 2026

Update March 7, 2026 Yesterday the stocked trout streams were discolored and running a little high. They are currently full but fishable this morning. The color has returned to normal. With the extra flow we are using heavier nymphs and streamers around the riffles. Starting right below the riffles, cast across stream. After your fly sinks deeply swim it across the stream bottom by stripping it 4-inches every 4 seconds. Recommended flies:

Murray's Heavy Hellgrammite, black or brown size 6 or 8

Murray's Roadkill Nymph, skunk or olive size 6 or 8

Jigged Squirmy Wormie

Olive Dragonfly Nymph size 6

To see the latest streams stocked, visit DWR website.

********************************************************************

Now let's move onto the native brook trout streams. The warmer temperatures later this week will get every angler in the mood to be on the small streams. The first hatch occurs this month. The Quill Gordon nymphs are growing rapidly and some are moving to the lower part of the riffles. A few of these are washed into the main stream and the trout are ready to take them quickly. A very effective technique is to fish a Mr. Rapidan Bead Head Nymph size 14 upstream dead drift, landing it right at the lower edge of the riffle.

Other recommended flies for the native brook trout streams:

Perdigon Nymph, Olive size 14 or 16

Bead Head Prince Nymph size 12 or 14

Olsen's Barbless Blowtorch size 16

Jigged Tungsten Hare's Ear Nymph size 14

Mr. Rapidan Parachute Dry size 14

For better water levels, I would come into the streams from the Skyline Drive. For more information on access to the streams, see the book Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park.
