Apparently Bentley is planning to throw their hat or derby… or something fancy… back in to the ring of the 24 hours of Le Mans. The are so serious that they have gone out and hired Graham Humphrys to consult on the project.

Humphrys was a large part of the success behind the 1999 BMW LMR victory and Le Mans, and is considered by many in the industry to be one of the best organizers around. It is unsure what class Bentley will decide on, but looking at past history and recent ‘off the record’ comments it would appear that they would be leaning towards GT3. I definitely hope this is a sooner than later effort. It would be great to see a Bentley competing at Le Mans again.

The folks at Motion Simulation have brought us Christmas a tad bit early this year. That futuristic pod you see in the picture there is their just released TL1 simulator. The folks at Ariel gave them a large helping hand in this latest endeavor, and it is every racing simulator geeks dream come true.

The TL1 uses 3 HD projectors to give you the experience of being completely immersed in a race car with the wrap around screens. It is compatible with PC’s, X-Box 360, and the Sony Playstation 3. Imagine being able to play Grand Tourismo 5 with complete immersion. It definitely beats knocking your soda over into your bag of Cheetos while trying to use one of those tiny pedal addons. However, there is a downside. This beast will set you back a little over $18,000.00. So, as long as you don’t mind dropping that kind of dough, and of course trying to find a place to put it (who needs living room furniture anyways?) then please by all means run out and grab one today. Just remember to invite me when you do.

To say that today is a sad day for the automotive world is an understatement. Carroll Shelby, one of the true pioneers of everything automotive that we have come to love and cherish, has passed away at the age of 89.

Born January 11, 1923 in Leesburg, Texas, Shelby’s love of cars manifested itself early on while he was attending high school in Dallas, Texas. After serving in the United States Army Air Coprs he adjusted to civilian life by placing himself behind the wheel of a race car. The rest, as they say, is history. In the 1950′s Shelby drove for the Aston Martin, Cad-Allard, and Maserati race teams. He was named Sports Illustrated’s Driver of the Year in both 1956 and 1957. He set 16 speed records in his now famous Austin Healey 100s, and in 1959 won the 24 hours of LeMans. He raced Formula One, he raced LeMans, he raced hill climb events… you can see where this is going. The man was born to challenge any car he could get behind the wheel of, and he did it extremely well. After retiring from racing, Carroll Shelby went on to help design, build and influence some of the greatest sports cars in automotive history throughout the years. It would be easy to mull over the enormous list of cars that he has been responsible for, maybe even to make a top 5 or 10 list of them. However, I think it is more fitting to remember the man not for the vehicles he helped to create, but instead, to remember him as a man that truly loved anything automotive and helped show us how to love and appreciate them as well. I don’t see anyone being able to step into his shoes to bring future generations to the joy of sitting behind a steering wheel, and that is a sad thing indeed.

If the past few years have shown us anything, it is that innovation and advancement in engine building is still going strong. With everyone under the sun cranking out 400+ horse power, the competition level in the sports car circle is getting very very heavy.

It would appear that Jaguar is taking that little tidbit very seriously. The folks at Car and Driver found out that Jaguar is planning on cramming a V8 under the hood of the new F-Type to make sure it keeps up with the competition. Several years back it would have been fine for them to ship a sports car with one of their high performance V6′s, supercharged or not. However, with Mustangs and Camaros prowling the streets pushing well over 500 horses Jaguar knows it has to step up if it wants to continue to be taken seriously when it comes to performance. I can’t wait to see what the final decision engine wise will be. Like I’ve said before… all this competition is going to make for some incredible cars!

Car makers are reducing platforms to reduce cost and keep consistency while expanding their current vehicle model offerings to new markets. Now, thanks to a trade agreement between the US and South Korea, the Chevrolet Corvette is about to make landfall south of the 38th parallel.

May 4th marked the official launch date of the Corvette in South Korea. The bow tie’s staple muscle car can now be scooped up for 86,400,000.00 South Korean Won, or roughly $76,528.00 US. It will be interesting to see how an icon like the Corvette is received in the South Korean market. It will also be interesting to see where the Corvette will make landfall next. Bringing muscle cars to the world masses can never be a bad thing!

You work on it, you tweak it and you make it your own. Wanting it to stand out is only natural. However, if you are buying an incredibly rare Bugatti Veyron you may being going a little overkill.

Behold the Bugatti Veyron Wei Long (awesome!) edition. This Veyron Grand Sport model has been tweaked with porcelain dragon sculptures on both the body and interior. It also has dragon figurines on the oil and fuel cap. It sports silk floor mats, a white exterior, carmine red interior and Chinese Dragon characters embroidered in the head rests. The Wei Long was unveiled at the Beijing Auto Show and was sold for right at 1.58 million Euros (roughly 2 million dollars.) So there you have it… when you don’t want your Bugatti Veyron to look like all the other Veyrons out there, you can just touch it up a bit… For a price.

Ford said the new GT500 would have 650 horsepower and 630 Ft. Lbs of torque. They even said it with a grin.

Well, the final numbers on this beast have come out and it would appear that Ford was wrong. The final power rating puts the GT500 right at 662 horsepower and 631 Ft. Lbs of torque. That pulls it even further away from the 580 horsepower listed for the new Camaro ZL1 and the 638 horsepower listed for the Corvette ZR1. Ford was also quick to point out that the new GT500 is more fuel efficient than its 2012 predecessor and the new Camaro, probably while laughing softly and twirling the end of an evil genius mustache while petting a cat. How will the other car makers respond? We will have to wait and see, but hopefully they come out swinging.

The very first Cobra reared its head at the New York Auto Show earlier this year, and the celebration is still going strong.

The latest was a Shelby owners meet up at the Wally Parks NHRA Museum in Pomona, California. The show was put on by the Team Shelby Pacific Coast Division and included original Cobras and their modern kit car counterparts. Meet was also graced with the presence of several rare collectibles for everyone to drool on, such as the Dragonsnake Cobra drag car, the Shelby School of High Performance Driving Cobra track car, and the original first production Cobra CSX2001. The Cobra is still one of the most built replicars on the road today. If the next stop on this birthday parade shows up close to you, take the time to go see it. It will be well worth the time.

It seems that car shows have been once a week since the start of 2012 with new models and concept vehicles coming out of the woodwork. Well Lotus has quietly released it’s 2012 Lotus Evora S. It was first spotted at the 2012 New York Auto Show with barely any press information. Now it is starting to hit dealerships and it actually does have some significant changes for the 2012 model year.

Lotus was never one to bandy about with luxurious interiors, but the previous Evora was down right bare. Now Lotus has upgraded them somewhat with new padded leather for the door sills and panels, the brushed metal dash has lost its blinding glare with a dark look, the Recaro seats have been redone with better padding and much of the cockpit now has a nice piping throughout. The Evora also sports a new Pioneer audio/nav system instead of the dreadful Alpine setup from previous models. It finally appears that Lotus has caught on that the people that drive their cars might just want to enjoy a little comfort while taking some nice S curves.
