MP3val and encoding your music files

When it comes to running an online radio station and using AutoDJ one of the most important thing you can do is get your music files encoded properly. A recent experience with a Museter client has brought this to light. He was having many problems with corrupted files and wanted a program that would batch encode and check for corrupted files. He came across this free open source program called MP3val. The claim on their website is as follows... "MP3val is a small, high-speed, free software tool for checking MPEG audio files' integrity. It can be useful for finding corrupted files (e.g. incompletely downloaded, truncated, containing garbage). MP3val is also able to fix most of the problems. Being a multiplatform application, MP3val can be runned both under Windows and under Linux (or BSD)." Museter.com is one the industry leaders in unlimited SHOUTcast hosting.

Worried about paying royalty fees? Well worry no more! Check out Free Music Archive!

The Free Music Archive is an interactive library of high-quality, legal audio downloads. The Free Music Archive is directed by WFMU, the most renowned freeform radio station in America. Radio has always offered the public free access to new music. The Free Music Archive is a continuation of that purpose, designed for the age of the internet.
Every mp3 you discover on The Free Music Archive is pre-cleared for certain types of uses that would otherwise be prohibited by copyright laws that were not designed for the digital era. These uses vary and are determined by the rightsholders themselves (please see our FAQ) who feel that allowing a degree of free cultural access is beneficial not only to their own pursuits, but to our society as a whole. Are you a podcaster looking for pod-safe audio? A radio or video producer searching for instrumental bed music that won't put your audience to sleep? A remix artist looking for pre-cleared samples? Or are you simply looking for some new sounds to add to your next playlist? The Free Music Archive is a resource for all that and more, and unlike other websites, all of the audio has been hand-picked by established audio curators.
The Free Music Archive is a platform for collaboration between WFMU and a group of fellow curators, including KEXP, dublab, KBOO, ISSUE Project Room, and CASH Music. The site combines the curatorial approach that these organizations have played for the last few decades, with the community generated approach of many current online music sites.
New Online Radio For Your Listening Pleasure

Working online either at home or in an office, can get boring and be a very sterile atmosphere. But it doesnt have to be.

I work from home and initially I would turn the TV on for background entertainment but you discover very quickly, its a visual medium therefore its very distracting as you have to actually watch it.

So the obvious next step was the radio. But again it plays more than music. There is news and competitions and adverts to distract you.

Ok, load up the stereo I hear you say. Well you can, but again its distracting in that you have to find the songs you want to play and change them at times also. And of course you are limited by what music you have that you can play.

The solution, online radio streams. Now I'm not talking actual commercial radios as again thats just the radio set transferred to an online source so still that distraction factor. If you have a favourite radio station, you can usually access an online stream for them, if you prefer that and it doesnt bother you or cause too much distraction. I have added my favourite radios to my browser for when I do like to relax and take in some "more varied" entertainment.

But what I'm talking about here are specific types or gender or periods of music as an online stream. There are many which users have set up to just supply a constant 24/7 playlist. There is bound to be one covering your specific music taste. I have several different online streams saved to my favourites which I simply "open" and have playing in the background as I work. Just a constant stream of music of the type you select with no distractions to interrupt you.

The site I recommend is Radionomy. They host a numerous array of music streams covering every conceivable taste. There are others of course which a simple search will bring up. But I havent had to look further myself.

I was a DJ and operator of a mobile disco outfit back in the 80's and as such, built quite a collection myself of music mainly from the 70's and 80's. And with Radionomy being open to anyone to use, I decided to even set up my own stream. So if you like the music of the 60's, 70's and 80's then you are welcome to check out Micksden Online Radio.

So if you want to enjoy some music as you work without the hassle of setting it up yourself, and without the distractions of commercial radio, then look at online music streams. Works for me.

Michael Hughes is owner and operator of http://www.micksden.com and CEO of the Micksden Buzz Club.

There is no need for greed online. Anyone can make money online if they approach it sensibly.
