The titles for Darcy Paquet’s 10 film retrospective at this years Udine Far East Film Festival have been announced! The retrospective titled, “The darkest decade: Korean filmmakers in the 1970s” will also have an accompanying book available there. Putting together a retrospective is no easy feet especially in a case like this where Darcy selected 10 films that have never screened in the West before which brings all sorts of challenges in finding suitable prints, getting English subtitles made, rights issues and more! I’ll be checking out this retrospective at Udine this year so stay tuned for more coverage and reviews of it!

It took eleven days to film for Michelangelo Antonioni in Vera, Almería, Spain, to finally get his seven minute long closing tracking shot for The Passenger. Here we see Antonioni just outside the make shift hotel entrance with the Westcam (used to film it) hovering to his right. It was a technically precise shot that required everything to be exacting and compounding this howling winds made it even more challenging. However on day eleven of shooting they finally got the footage they needed with it which was a blessing as a storm that blew in on day twelve completely destroyed its set.

The Passenger is a story of a television newsman who seeks to escape reality by assuming another man’s identity.

While David Locke (Jack Nicholson) is interviewing a Shaman in Michelangelo Antonioni’s, The Passenger, the tables get turned when the Shaman asks Locke, “Your questions are much more revealing about yourself than my answers would be about me.” The Passenger is a film that explores mankind’s often paradox of being caught and stuck living one life while dreaming and wishing they could be living another. What if we could change our identity tomorrow and live life anew?
