Some are hard to access, some have been forgotten, some are in view but very few people know about their significance. On this walk, we cover various sites which people seldom notice - from Victorian paintings in a restaurant to Norman arches under a church, the subterranean remains of a debtor's prison and houses built just after the Great Fire.
Date: 10 July 2009.
Times: 14:00

Pirate Leghorn

Prepare to come aboard and hear the adventures of Alice Leghorn, female pirate, as she talks about the truth - or is it fable? - of life as a pirate on the high seas. Hear about Jack Rackham, Blackbeard and Mary Read, amongst others, and the most blood thirsty of them all...Sir Francis Drake...?

And this summer Museum of London Docklands will be digging it up as we celebrate a summer of archaeology with The Big Dig, a specially designed family experience which runs from 11 July and 6 September 2009.

Wannabe Indiana Joneses will be kitted up with a hard hat and trowel and get to search for genuine artefacts and remains in their own trenches, just like real archaeologists! Our experts will be on hand to show them how to record, analyse, identify and interpret finds, which all form a vital part of a bigger puzzle. Participants will then down tools and see how their discoveries give us evidence of ancient buildings. Piece by piece the fascinating world of early Londoners will be uncovered.

The contents included a gun stamped with the insignia of Thomas Gresham, the famous Elizabethan financier (1519-1579), and part of a valuable cargo of metal ingots and iron bars. The ship and its contents are now being studied as part of a five-year project by researchers in London, Portsmouth and Denmark. Archaeologist Gustav Milne from University College London will explain how the ship was found and what the research has revealed so far.
Date: 22 July 2009.
Times: 13:10

Toddlers and Carers Group

Learn, play and explore together in this hands-on, creative session for under 5s and their carers. Planning permission required that a record of these buildings be made before they were demolished or converted to new uses, even though they were not necessarily listed buildings. These buildings can tell us a great deal about how London grew and became the modern city we know. Andrew has worked for the Museum since 1981 and has been investigating and recording standing buildings for some years.
