In February we will be hosting an exhibit and celebration of the history of the Monterey Pop Festival.

Precursor to Woodstock, the 1967 Monterey International Pop Festival was a celebration of musical genres and personalities and the center of youth based social movements to follow.

This media-driven exhibition will tell the story of the musicians, people, city and festival through film, music, poetry, photography and art. The Museum of Monterey will present an “experience” for the visitor and place them in the moment of June, 1967: at the festival, in the campgrounds, backstage and in the city of Monterey where they can see rare concert footage, images of the performers as well as memorabilia and detritus of the weekend festival. The Museum of Monterey Director Lisa Coscino is partnering with “A Perfect Haze” authors Harvey and Kenneth Kubernick, John McCleary, author of “The Hippie Dictionary,” Nicholas Merriwether, Grateful Dead archivist, concert promoter Fred Arellano, and others to produce an interactive festival experience complete with a film series, concerts, lectures, youth storytelling, beat and slam poetry readings and backstage passes.

The Monterey Pop Festival was a pivotal event culturally, socially and politically and in many ways parallels the “occupy” movements that have been cropping up around the United States recently. It is our intention to investigate this parallel between the generations and to explore the powerful reverberations that the Monterey Pop Festival started.

The Museum of Monterey is proud to present an exhibition featuring inspiring artwork by youth from the Boys & Girls Club of Monterey County.

Thirty talented young artists from the Boys & Girls Clubs, ranging in ages 6-18, will be recognized during the event. The exhibit is part of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County’s participation in the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Fine Arts Exhibit Program competition, which promotes young people’s creativity and encourages artistic skills and cultural enrichment. Two local youths who have been recognized and national and regional winners of the competition will be highlighted in the exhibit.

Participation in the arts has a direct connection to overall academic success and gives youth the opportunity to develop leadership, critical thinking, and long-term goal setting skills. In a well-documented national study, researchers from UCLA found that students with high arts involvement performed better on standardized achievement tests than students with lower arts involvement. They also watched fewer hours of TV, participated in more community service, and reported less boredom in school. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Monterey County work to fulfill the need for youth arts programming by offering daily classes, exhibits, and field trip opportunities to the youth of our community.

The “reading” of costume and the subsequent painting of costume have become Bolduan’s method for a re-examination of the past, incorporating aesthetic insight with contemporary global issues and ideas.

The meaning of any costume collection is not always obvious without a grasp of its history. Through Ruth’s paintings, visitors to the Museum of Monterey will experience a fresh interpretation of the history and lives of the people in the Monterey area.

Bolduan’s recent paintings of women clothed in 18th century attire will be exhibited this season at the Mount Clare Museum in Baltimore, Maryland. The exhibition at the Museum of Monterey will further develop the theme of reading history through costume, based on the museum’s collection.

This workshop includes a thoughtful gallery discussion and story to accompany a hands-on art project inspired by the CHICANITAS exhibition. Kids will use what they have learned through visual observation and cultural discussion to create their own small painting. Kids Create encourages kids to explore a variety of mediums, from paint to charcoal, pencil, pastel, ink, clay, and more. All materials are provided!
