Savant and Kcaz Sun and Moon

Music4 Melancholy

Duality is the quality or character of being two fold, a dichotomy good and evil, hard and soft, light and darkness.

Sun and Moon a complement to each element comprises of Savant and Kcaz Sun and Moon.

This was an interview I was looking forward to. There is a personal history there. We met up and touched upon several subjects; race and hip-hop, drug use within the industry and the significance of keeping roots alive in music.

Savant and Kcaz bred in Santa Cruz, California The 831. The two artists grew up together and have known each other for 12 years plus. So now in 2013 it seemed to be an oppritune time to do a project and collaborate on their project Sun and Moon.

Kcaz: “ Savant inspired me to do this project, we have the same spiritual beliefs at the core.” As artists we gravitate toward the same goal. And we both have a native heritage. “ We should have been doing projects way back, but now we found the time to complete something that means a lot to us.

Savant : “ Our style’s wewre heading in the complementary directions with our styles we felt we needed tp put this out in the universe before we go.” “ I also want to add, that I felt there was no other individual of my caliber that I wanted to collaborate with.”

The Sun and Moon LP was released on July 12^th, 2013. It has videos of the feature singles “ FLY AWAY”

Featuring Kcaz and Savant. “ NEVA CHANGE” featuring Kcaz, Savand and Bo Dixon on vocals. The video was shot locally here in Santa Cruz and there is great cameo shots of the beautiful town we grew up in.There has been great anticipation of the project amongst fans and fellow artists.

As of recent Savant was asked to join the Black Bizness roster.

Savant: “ It only made sense since I’ve been down with them and collaborating with them it seemed like a good fit.”

I asked them how they felt about the 831 music scene.

Kcaz: “ I’ll say it I feel like this, I feel its lacking a “ ethnic feel”. Shout out to everybody but its not my cup of tea.” “ I create street music.”

Savant : “ I feel it is dominated and being controlled by a few in this town. What we are ( Sun and Moon) are trying to bring it back to the essence to what it is, And if there is no door we are going to create it.”

On the Sun and Moon album I asked which songs held the most significance.

Kcaz: This track I wrote called “ Use to love me” it’s definitely a song about a relationship that went dysfunctional and for me that would be the one.”

Savant: “ Play it right, it’s about the internal struggle of pursuing your dreams the legal way and the illegal way and the all the lines get blurred when you get desperate.”

They both have had a lot of musical influence’s as previously mentioned Rich Tycoon as a mentor.

Kcaz: “ Defiantley black culture and native culture. Hip hop story tellers of our generation to me that would be Nas to E-40. All hip- hop and rap but mainly west coast gangster rap.” I did not grow up in the most positive environment so, I was not listening to the most positive music. My father was a reggae promoter so I remember when I was little he would take me to reggae on the river.”

Savant : “ Street culture influence, Hip –Hop has always been an honest medium of music, but hip –hop alone did not just influence me. Sade’s music, her lyrics. My mother Mary Olimpio who was a published poet she always pushed me to develop myself as a person and to the musician I want to become. And of course DMX, Tupac, Big Pun, and Too- Short. Hip Hop was like a “father figure to me.”

As we discussed many topics the subject of drugs and hip hop came up I wanted to see their point of views.

Kcaz: “ I feel drugs are always have been a part of hip hop culture and continues to be because until we have reached a higher level of consciousness it’s an evil that’s always going to be there.”

Savant: “ My take on the issue is this, I do not promote drug use, I rather be a part of the solution rather than the problem.”

I had a great time interviewing Kcaz and Savant it was hilarious, insightful and eye opening. I have known them for quite some time and to see all this come to fruition for them is exciting and to also partake in it. Sun and Moon was released July 12^th, 2013 if you do not own a copy I suggest you purchase one.

This has been a collaboration of Kcaz and Savant for Music4Melancholy. If you have any further questions or comments about my featured artist please feel freet o email me at Sonia4rmwestcoastmag@live.com or contact me here at Music4Melancholy.

CHRIS RENE' INTERVIEW 2009 WESTCOAST MAGAZINE

2013-07-02T11:44:00.002-07:00

*****Note- This Interview was conducted with Chris Rene' in 2009 with my former affiliations with West Coast Magazine when I was a contributing writer and I conveyed his musical journey this is pre X-factor I hope you all will enjoy it. SRL M4M

West Coast Magazine by SONIA RAQUEL LIMAS 2010

Chris Rene also known as C-Monk is definitely a diamond in the rough representin Love Life Muzik . Chris grew up in Santa Cruz, but also spent his formative years in L.A . This is evident in the music he has created with his Debut album SOUL’D OUT 2009. I got a chance to listen and review this cd and it has to be a top 10 favorite album of mine. While Chris was living in L.A. Western and 24th block to be exact, that's when he decided to get in to music. Love Life actually came about through a dream which materialized into what it has become today. It is evident in the music he has created in his album SOUL'D OUT IN 2009. Chris currently lives and makes music in Santa Cruz, CA. He works with a group of producers that go by the name Slapademiks which include Hakim Keem Beats, JAR, Monik Ape, including Chris Rene. Cmonk started recording music at the age of 12 with his brother and best friend to form a Punk band by the name Diversion. Chris’s ties to the music industry go back farther,His family’s legacy is deeply rooted in Music His Grandfather Leon Rene wrote and composed Rockin Robin which was a hit single also he pioneered the R&B music scene here on the West Coast along with his father

Googie Rene who recorded an album Wham Bam and is also a very talented jazz pianist he welcomed his son Chris Rene into the world in 1982. Chris's family is very musically inclined he has an older sister Gina Rene who is an accomplished artist in her own right she performs in L.A..

I was intrigued with his introduction to music which has been a strong influence since he was born. It was his destiny to be involved in music in all levels as a singer and producer.

Chris wants to reach out to all people of diverse backgrounds an heal people with his music, since he has gone through the struggles of addiction it will inspire other’s to love life which is what he lives by daily . In the future he would like to collaborate with such artists such as Alicia Keys, SADE, and most importantly his older sister Gina Rene. Chris has opened for such artist’s as Ice Cube, Andre Nickatina,Bone Thugs N Harmony and Rappin 4 Tay here in Santa Cruz also in other venues in California. I would not dare to define or put his music into one single category

It is acoustic soul and r&b and it evolves with his life experiences he has gone through and continues to on this journey. is next project is a mixtape which will be featuring artists from the 831. Sould Out Chris Rene’s debut album can be purchased at www.chrisrene.com, Streetlight Records, and Tycoon Apparel. Playz Exclusive****John Manley for Music4Melancholy

2013-06-24T11:43:00.003-07:00

It's funny how in a way we are all truly connected, Playz has been someone I knew of and we have many people in common. We have never officially met until recently in June, where we convened an interview at Barrios Unidos. I have always had him as an artist in the forefront of my mind to interview but for whatever reasons, timing was an issue until now.

Playz a.k.a. John Manley II, is a representative of East Side Santa Cruz, CA. He has always been connected to music in some way shape or form. "Ever since I can remember, my mom would give me a ton of chores," Playz said, smiling at the memory, "so I would turn on the rock and roll station." Rock and Roll had a huge impact in Playz formative years, as well as punk rock such artists such as: Lynrd Skynrd, NOFX, Misfits, Hall & Oats, and Pink Floyd. In his later years, his love for Hip Hop would creep in and takeover.

In his early 20's, he was a part of the group The Minions, alongside Esau Kingsland and Justin Melancon of Life Sentence notoriety. As a local Santa Cruz Hip Hop group, they had opnened up for such artists as: Bone Thugs in Harmony, XZIBIT, The Jacka, and Andre Nickatina, just to name a few.

I told him remembered him playing at The E3 Play House when it used to be on Front Street in Downtown Santa Cruz. They did many show in 2007. During this period, Playz disclosed to me, on record, that he was getting loaded and he remembers rapping about his addiction on a song called " Soul Searching," along with the other group members. It was a song about being a slave to drugs and all that it entails. Also around this time, the other group members of The Minions wanted to start their own families. "So around this time, musically for me I was " soul searching" so to speak."

Then he had met Lee Earl and they hit it off. "Lee Earl is a relaxed, low key, you know everyday dude like myself." Playz and Lee Earl found a common ground and started to form something organic to their sound. Playz joined the already established group ZO FUNK and during this period, more of his song writing had developed.

Between 2007-2009, he had met another artist by the name of Chris Rene an artist he had previously and briefly worked with. "I was doing the whole sober living thing and Chris and I knew alot of the same people just from kicking it and music." So Playz and Chris finally started working together creatively. They performed at shows in Santa Cruz County with the already established Love Life Crew. "We were openers for many venues. We carried and carved out that Central Coast SC vibe." In 2009, Playz and Chris went on separate journeys with their careers, but remained friends and stayed in touch even though they had different goals at hand.

This is when Pro-Fel Inc was established. As of current, Playz had been determined to make 2013 a year of performing, promoting and beat making. Also exposing his newest projects such as Pro Fel Inc. merchandise, promoting his Third album, "Shaking it More Than Twice," producing Mrs. Gross’s upcoming album, "Virgin Mouth," and his 4th album is in the works.

"You know I am a regular local guy, I go to work, spend time with my family and spend time in the studio." Recently, he was a part of UGH41, a compilation of artists, hosted by Kung Fu Vampire, which is circulated throughout the United States and is available online. This year his album will be released on August 9th, 2013. He also has been collaborating with Lee Earl on the "Porch Sessions vol 1&2. Playz and Ross Rock a.k.a. Mike Ross with the hit song, "LURK." They are also collaborating on a new song called, "Lets Creep."

Playz to me is a consummate artist, not only an artist, but a self promoter as well. I love his go -getter style and I truly relate to him on that. I am glad we finally met and I hope to collaborate creatively with him in the near future Be on the look out for many great things to come from this artist.

This has been collaboration between Music4Melancholy and Playz of Pro Fel Inc.

Still waters
rivers incarnate
I admired your youth
But I knew of an ancient soul
that carried in to you
I was in fear but also intrigued
in the sentiment it was eclipsed
by time
there was a natural rhythm
to it all
I knew you felt it like all the times before
and before that moment's the slip
time only fades
I turned each other
that bends in my heart
that cant immobilize for another
architecture of life
what will these words really mean in the end?
because I will never be truly resolute
in it all i go on knowing
that,
I am physically and spiritually fit so why would I be susceptible
to anything that is weak?
you tell me share the same reflection
you a yang to my yin
your right no one ever really wins
and as time goes on in spite of me despite
what you know there was something that lingered
and triggered me to this madness
muses in the midnight
I screamed your name
secrecys of sensuality
you know I can't forgive
you know know I cant and I wont
it's better to leave it left unsaid

Logik The Saint- A Diamond in the Rough.

2013-03-04T14:53:00.002-08:00

Logic refers to both the study of modes of reasoning. Logik is used in most intellectual activities.
Logik The Saint is the youngest MC of the group Krooked Fam representing Santa Cruz and Watsonville, California. The 831 local music scene.

I met up with Logik The Saint at the beginning of the year on a late friday afternoon. Logik is actually an alumni from Barrios Unidos. Barrios Unidos have always been supportive of the local youth in cultivating their talents . I met Logik last year in March of 2012, when I first interviwed Krooked Fam for Music for Melancholy. In his youth his delivery has a wise message he has an acumen for words and logically strings them together to deliver a verbal assualt. It all begun for Logik The Saint when he saw his older brother rapping it encompassed his attention. So he began to pursue his passion and recorded his first song at 14 years old. "For me it was a form of self expression both to release positive and negative energy."he said. " Music for me was an avenue where I could express that." In 2010 Barrios Unidos had asked him to perform at a Non-Violence Peace rally in the wake of the death of Tyler Tenorio and related incidences that were related incidences in Santa Cruz County. " I am, really down to support the cause and lend my talents to the community."Logik The Saint I am for one very impressed that he is willing to lend his efforts and talents and is one of the many artists'willing to be gracious to do so.

As time went on he started to rap and doing collaborations with other artists' " I first met Menyo of ( Krooked Fam) then he introduced me to L.P. aka Lorenzo Figeoroa and the first song we recorded to gether was a joint called " Snatched Up." They liked how eachother's styles flowed together and this formed the group Logik The Saint, L.P., Menyo, Hec-Dog, and the newest member to round out the roster Rubba Tung which comprises KROOKED FAM. As far as his solo project which I am excited for aptly titled " Tears of A Nation" which he articulated to me has a underground and socially concious vibe.

In our conversations we touched upoun how music has become very much watered down, without substance. I did not see it this way before Logik had pointed it out " Music, has become nothing more than product placement generating machine." " Getting artist's to promote material goods to the masses." Logik The Saint said. I feel him on that and that is very dissapointing for people who have a true raw and inate talent they are not recognized mfor their efforts or talents.

He hopes to shed light on this and he puts alot of thought and effort in his music. His music has meaning " I like to test the art of lyricism." Logik said. As of recent Logik the Saint participated in the 1st Annual Central Coast Producers Battle about two months ago held at the Blue Lagoon in downtown Santa Cruz,California. He also performed at vvarious venues such as Boccis' Cellar, The Blue Lagoon, The Bargetto Winery, Zeldas, and the Main Stage at The CATALYST CLUB which I can tell he is very proud of and I am very proud of him. I really wanted to know as our interview neared wrapping up which was more of his focus MCing or Producing? " Well Mcing, will always be at the forefront but ive been dabbling in producing." Logik The Saint said. He produced the beat for " The dude that did it" Featuring L.P. and Rubba Tung. You can also check out their nect date The Bootleggers Ball at Zeldas in the Capitola Village on March 22nd, 2013. Also there is KROOKED FAM apparel now available too. Get in the iknow of Logik the Saint he will be bringing a new facet to the music game in 2013.

Etienne David Franc ***Exclusive

2013-01-30T12:25:00.003-08:00

Etienne David Franc for MusicforMelancholy

By: Sonia Raquel Limas

Etienne David Franc hails from New York, New York. He is an artist I truly sought after since the summer of 2012.We finally found some time to convene during the holidays to talk about music and his upcoming projects. Etienne David Franc was born in Manhattan. He has always had music all around him ever since he was young. His parents instilled great music in his life, while growing up in New York and in the New Jersey area, music such as Thelonius Monk, John Coltrane, R&B, Funk, Soul, Disco, Classic and Folk. All this music was very much a part of the wealth of his formative years. From the beginning Etienne had a vast knowledge of music. An interesting fact is he grew up during the birth of Hip Hop.

“ I remember I would go into the record shops in New York and I would run into some of the members of the Rock Steady Crew and they would show me their album covers with their graffiti art.” Etienne said. To be at the burgeoning of hip hop seeing KRS 1 and Rakim in the cipher circles must of have had an influence for him to pursue his career in music.

Etienne’s stomping grounds as a teenager was in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. The sounds that enveloped the streets at the time were Ska, Punk, Reggae, Dancehall, and Hip Hop. Around this time, he dropped out of high school and started experimenting with drugs. He started hanging out more and pursued his love of music. In the mid 90’s, he and a few friends decided to move to Santa Cruz, California. When he arrived in Santa Cruz, he expanded his creative forces and began performing at such venues at Palookaville and Red Room. Around this point he met Gabriel Rene’ and their friendship and musical collaboration began.

During this time Etienne was honing his producing skills and ventured into that avenue of music. He attended Cabrillo College and worked at Zachary’s Restaurant in downtown Santa Cruz. Etienne discovered sobriety and became sober in 19999. Nine months later, Etienne auditioned for the band OPM, which was a fusion of Hip Hop, Ska, and Funk. OPM toured a big leg of Europe Spain, Italy, and Germany. OPM also opened for Everlast and they were featured on “ Tops of The Pops;” a popular T.V. program in the U.K.

When he returned to the states, he started to play in the band Soulstice that featured; Gabriel Rene’, Mei Lwun Yee, Andy Caldwell, and Gina Rene’. I listened to all of their LP’S and I recommended all of them.

Etienne decided to move down to Southern California and pursue his goals as an artist.

Etienne auditioned for the Singer Aimee Allen, who was signed to Elektra Records. He toured with her for a year. After the tour, there was a musical hiatus and gigs started to stall out. Etienne said, “ I felt at the time I just didn’t feel creatively connected, I had a job and I had just been promoted, but my heart gravitated towards my creative side.”

In 2008 Etienne moved back to Santa Cruz. Around this time I attended Etienne and Gina’s shows at the former Asana Tea House in Down Town Santa Cruz. What I saw was a natural respect for the art and that’s what kept me coming back to all their shows.

Etienne’s long-standing creative relationship with the Rene’ Family turned into an opportunity to collaborate with Chris Rene. He became his touring bassist traveled with him across the country last summer. In March of 2012 he appeared along with Chris Rene’ on the Ellen DeGeneres Show.

In November of 2012, I went to see Afro Beat Box at Moe’s Alley in Santa Cruz, CA. Afro Beat Box is an eclectic collective of artist’s such as: Sambada’, AZA, BlyndSyte, Flor De Cana, and Gina & Etienne. The idea was to encompass these great artists because of the root of their music has African origins. Sounds of; Funk, R&B, Cuban Son, Turkish, Hip Hop, Beat Boxing and Afro-Brazilian. These eclectic variations of sound formed into Afro Beat Box and I highly recommend checking out their next performance.

After interviewing Etienne I got the essence of who he is as an artist. I view him as an artist’s artist. I am impressed by how he understands all the dynamics of the creative process and he does it with “Alma” meaning soul in Spanish. Each Time, I have attended his performances; he has shown me generosity and puts on a stellar show. I hope this gives my friends and family of Music For Melancholy a better insight into Etienne’s music. I am very excited for what 2013 will bring creatively for me and Etienne.

Etienne David Franc’s most recent project is The GAME LP released on November 26^th, 2012 with his band Check In The Dark his band since 2005.

Thank You,

SKYFALL

2012-10-11T12:05:00.000-07:00

The Bond films franchise has chosen the artist to cover the 007 theme song and clearly a good one ADELE.
Good business call on the franchise and Rick Rubin and XL Entertainment this solidifies her placement in cinematic and music history. Adele whom I share a birthday with has sung from beyond her years I still for some crazy reason not bought 21 bought I did buy 19 the song that caught the strings of my soul was "Chasing Pavements" In where she declares " Should I give up/ Or just keep chasing pavements/ Even if it leads no where" I was going through a similar situation at the time but I chose to keep chasing pavement lol!
Adele has maintained her placement in the Billboards top 100 in the 4th slot since the release of her Sophmore album 21 with the release date of Feburary 4th, 2010 she has now surpassed Micheal Jackson's Thriller and with the release of Sky Fall it will open the ears and wallets of new fans. So to any artist up an coming you might want to ask Adele how to stay relevant, because I think and feel at the end of the day after all the party music fades we want to hear about whats real and she can clearly put that into effect. I will always be saddened that we did not get to hear a bond song from Miss Amy Winehouse she was approached to do so but her producer The ingenious Mark Ronson could not get her away from her distractions of drugs and alcohol. I feel her haunting contralto and her old soul earthiness would of been perfect for the bond song we will never hear what could of been. I really do love Adele and Amy Winehouse their Anglo Soul which the U.K. has always borrowed from the U.S. only to revise to their style and make it better! along with SADE and I wouldn't mind moving over there. I think they (london) pioneers and shifts music like no other country really has and these are artists that I feel a kinship with.

IM WITH YOU

2012-07-21T16:05:00.000-07:00

New Music equal new inspirations Red Hot Chili Peppers are coming out with their 11th studio album. This is very exciting " IM WITH YOU" but did they really leave no, this have left a lasting impression on the music scene since the 80's. Anthony Kiedis at the forefront as lyricist for RCHP theie sound was so secular they were architects of new sound it was a mix of George Clinton funk and the L.A. /westcoast punk rock that they molded into their own definitve sound . Brandons Death Song there sound has mellowed out from the Full throttle of Californication reminiscent of By the Way which by the way is my favorite album of theirs. You can almost tell where A. Kiedis is at with his mind, soul in spirit with the focal of his music with production of Rick Rubins of Beastie Boys fame and my idol producer. His lyricism throughout the years has reincarnates with the catalyst of his loyal band mates. On another Note No Doubt has their newest single out " Settle Down" but what if we dont want to . JUSTIN MELANCON ON THE RUN

By Sonia Raquel Limas for Music4Melancholy

Justin Melancon hailing from FT. Worth, Texas by way of Santa Cruz, CA. You can automatically feel the Cali vibe but his roots are truly Southern. I got to spend a friday afternoon at Jose Ave Park on a sunny June day to listen to a live jam session. It was beyond what I even pictured when he plays you can see the intent and feel the pulse of his music as he strums the chords, I was jamming along. One of the songs was Cali Dayz, Texas Sunsets and when he is in his zone he's going for it. Back home in Texas, country music has had a great influence on him and his sound. His music has been influenced by 311,Sublime, Eric Clapton, The Eagles cultivating his sound, which is raw and real, and it resonates in his lyrics. Justin ran into some legal trouble and had to serve a prison term in which upon he learned how to play the guitar " I would be on my bunk and play along to 311 and played along for hours until I got it." When he got out in 2003 he came out to Santa Cruz then drove down to L.A. " Yeah, I sold my car to a bunch of Australian kids bought a skate board and backpacked across country." He eventually ventured back to California where in Santa Cruz where he started going to Narcotic Anymous meetings he feel's his recovery is stronger out here in Santa Cruz. Justin has decided to put his music at the fore front " I feel 2012 is my year to show everyone, I know I am going to revive rock and roll." In Santa Cruz Justin started the band The Minions with John " Playz " Manley and Alex but he left the group to start his solo career. He has started another group called Life Sentence with Joshiah Kingsland. Life Sentence they make original beats and freestyle. This summer he’s in the studio working on his solo project he has a lot of material and I have personally heard a lot of the new freestyles and material. I hope the world is ready to hear his journey of wins, losses, and heartbreak. Justin’s music has had radio airplay and he has performed in Sonoma County in front of an audience of 15,000. He mainly promotes his music on You Tube “Yea, a lot of people promote on sound cloud, reverb nation, and band camp but I feel like I can connect and make equal impact with all of my fans which he calls “Lifers” on You Tube and make a direct impact.” I got a good sense he know who he is( in this moment) and he’s going for the glory. I have sought after Justin for many months now I first connected with him on Facebook back in October of 2011 but I had gone into treatment and lost contact but through a mutual friend I reconnected with him in June 2012. We got together to share music and experiences that are similar. And the music is what touches and makes the greatest impact music clearly runs in his veins and there's defianteley more to come.

Krooked Fam

2012-04-02T12:42:00.001-07:00

KROOKED FAM

Krooked Fam comprised of L.P., Logik the Saint, Menyo and Hec Dogg. Representing the 831 scene I had the pleasure of watching them perform at The GO GREEN show at the Blue Lagoon a few weeks back, that is where I asked L.P. to link up for an interview. We met up on a friday evening and it was more than just an interview I had such a great time laughing they had alot of good stories about music and just kicking it stories but at the root of all of it they are serious about their music, and when each member spoke you could hear the passion for their art and craft. Menyo and L.P. started rapping in the late 90's early 00's recording originally with another group but started Krooked Fam with Hec Dogg and the youngest member Logik the Saint.

They're influences are pure west coast classics such as Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog, Tech 9, N.W. A., and Ice Cube. " I always looked up to my brother in life ( Menyo) to whatever he was listening to he could of been listening to country and I would be making country gangster rap you know what I mean?." -L.P.
The humbleness of the group is felt when you speak to them " You know it's a beautiful thing when you can make your music, " We get down with who ever's willing to get down with us." -L.P. These guys are talented, funny, and have t.v./movie star good looks which is featured in the newly released Chris Rene' video for his single Young Homie. They have performed in numerous venues The Catalyst, Blue Lagoon and several clubs in the bay area Morgan Hill and Gilroy etc.

Their current project is a mixtape which will be released soon Krooked Family Buisness. 2012 is the year for them to focus on their music and get several projects out a new website site for Krooked Fam hopefully more collaborations and clothing line. I also had the pleasure of seeing their music video shot for their single " Just Go" here in Santa Cruz, California it was show on west cliff against the back drop off the ocean close family and friends came out to support and it was a good moment for the group.I feel alot of great things for them in the future and I endorse their music if you would like to further get to know my featured artists check them out on Facebook, Krooked Fam You Tube channel, Reverbnation for further questions you can contact me here at Music4Melancholy or Sonia4rmwestcoastmag@live.com
