Another Awesome Avalon Anthem

Avalon has changed a couple of their members over the years, but their music remains awesome. The vocals are different from the "A Maze of Grace" days but I wouldn't say that the song isn't just as good as "Testify to Love", "Speed of Light", "Adonai", or "Knockin' on Heaven's Door".

Check out Avalon!

This is a really good song from a solid Christian band. I rated it only four stars because it isn't one of their best songs, but it has a good hook and the production is first rate. If this is your first listen to Avalon, check out some of their other songs and albums. They have great vocals and positive messages!

New Christmas Standards?

Zooey Deschanel is quite the charmer. Her acting is adorable and her voice is silk. So how does this new Christmas album from She & Him rate in the endless potpourri of holiday staples? Well, overall, I'd have to say that some of these renditions may very well knock those 1950's classics off their throne. Not every song is classic, but those that are REALLY are. Here's my rundown:

THE UNDENIABLY BRILLIANT:

- The Christmas Waltz. I've never been a huge fan of this song, but She & Him nailed it absolutely perfectly. Zooey's voice has never sounded better, the production is subtle but enhancing. I love love love this song. Will be playing it all Christmas '11 and probably forever after that.

- Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas. I love how they made this classic even slower and more romantic. It's an amazing mixture beautiful, relaxing, and extremely sexy.

- Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree. A simple kick-snare beat and lush guitar mixes flawlessly with Zooey's voice to provide a live-like effect. It sounds like she's performing right in your living room!

- The Christmas Song. There's a lot of tough competition out there with this song, but She & Him's version is up there with the best.

THE LOVELY:

- I'll Be Home for Christmas. Like "Have Yourself..." the tempo is slowed down a bit for this one too. It doesn't translate quite as well, but still a stunning rendition.

- Christmas Wish. We get to hear more of "Him" on this track, and though he's no Zooey, it provides gorgeous contrast to the rest of the album and is a lovely merry relaxer.

- Sleigh Ride. Unexpectedly mellow for this usually upbeat number, but still works well.

- Christmas Day

- Blue Christmas

THE EH:

- Baby It's Cold Outside. The Christmas song Zooey is probably most famous for (from the movie Elf) is actually the worst track on the album IMO. For some reason the tempo is too fast and there is absolutely no chemistry between the singers. It sounds like they're so worried about singing on cue that they completely left out the story behind the song. Many performers have that problem with this song, but I was really disappointed to hear it on this album.

- Silver Bells. Not unlistenable by any means, but compared to pretty much every other version I've heard of this song, it isn't very good.

- Little Saint Nick. Just not a good match for Zooey's voice, IMO.

Overall, with only 3 so-so songs and about 9 really good if not great numbers, this is 2011's Christmas album to get. The voice and productions are unique, offering great mellowed-out versions of your holiday favorites in a way that hasn't been done before. I can easily recommend the whole album, but if you just feel like buying a single mp3 or two, obviously The Christmas Waltz is the best track on here. Absolutely timeless. Transformed an okay song into a masterpiece.

Excellent new Christmas Album!

I have collected Christmas music for years and once upon a time played it throughout the year. But I grew tired of all the predictable commercial releases. There was so little new under the sun that I stopped buying Christmas music. Then I heard the samples for this Amazon special today. I didn't know the group (sorry - love Zooey Deschanel in the movies - had no idea she sang) but loved the samples and thought it might be another $5.00 investment for a couple of decent songs. Wrong! Great album (can we still say album?) - great music. Try it and try not to smile. Beautiful, simple, fun and joyous. Thanks She & Him.

Christmas whimsy!

I love almost all Christmas music, but this CD is even better than most! I love the nostalgic homey feel that the songs have. It doesn't have all the Christmas songs I would like, but I am just happy She & Him put out a Christmas CD! Merry Christmas!

A quiet journey into the imagination of Kate Bush

After more than 30 years of writing and recording music unlike anything anyone else produces, Kate Bush, a serious artist disguised as an almost accidental pop star, is as well-known for her musical eccentricities as for her imaginative lyrics, stunning vocals, and lush aural landscapes, and there is no doubt that "50 Words for Snow" could only have been conceived and created by Kate Bush. From the first moments of its quiet opening piano chords and choir-boy vocal performed by her son, Bertie, she takes us on a journey deep into the heart of Winter in a series of seven songs, each of which revels in the contemplative and introspective, rather as if we're sitting with her by a fire while she sits at her piano musing on the nature of love, life, language, and the album's central theme, snow. It's an incredibly intimate experience, listening to the first three tracks: "Snowflake," in which Bertie sings the role of a falling snowflake which Bush encourages to 'keep falling, I'll find you' as she repeats the sad refrain, 'The world is so loud'; "Lake Tahoe," in which she and and counter-tenor Stefan Roberts tell the story of a Victorian woman's ghost who keeps appearing to wander around the cold lake, calling to her lost dog; and, perhaps strangest and most intriguing of all, "Misty", an unabashedly sensual song about a snowman who comes to life and makes love to the narrator, leaving her alone in soaked sheets and covered with bits of dead leaves in the morning. This triptych is built around Bush's simple vocals, jazzy piano, Steve Gadd's quiet but precise drumming, and bassist Danny Thompson's lovely bass lines, becoming denser and more complex as the songs progress. It's almost impossible to tell when one song ends and the next begins, even though Bush has said this album is not meant to be understood as a single piece of music à la Disc 2 of "Aerial: A Sky of Honey." But it feels as though it should be--it's hard to imagine pulling out one track and listening to it mixed in with other songs by other artists, or even by Bush herself.

The mood shifts a bit with the fourth track, "Wild Man", the only single from the album. On this song guest star Andy Fairweather Low joins her in the rousing chorus of a tale of a group who, while trekking through the Himalayas, come upon evidence of the elusive Yeti, the 'Wild Man' of the title, and join the local lamas and sherpas to erase all tracks so as to protect it from discovery (like all Kate Bush albums, this one is a collection of unusual stories and characters--she has never been an autobiographer, but almost a short story writer). Track five has generated the most mixed reviews so far, as she and Elton John trade vocals as lovers forever separated by events that span time (from the burning of Rome to 9/11 in New York City) on "Snowed in on Wheeler Street"; his performance here is a bit too muscular to sit quite comfortably beside her more delicate one, but his voice is strong and emotional, and they are convincing as an eternally star-crossed couple. Actor Stephen Fry guests on the title track, reciting Bush's fanciful list of "50 Words for Snow" in the guise of a language professor, cunningly named Joseph Yupik, the name of a Siberian-dwelling people, against a backdrop of rather agitated guitar-centered music. It is the least interesting song on the album, but again, if one listens to the entire hour-long record as one piece of music, it fits in well enough, and certainly opens a window onto her sense of humor (she made up many of the words--"spangladasha," "swans-a-melting," "stellatundra," and even includes one in Klingon). She closes the album with the simple piano ballad, "Among Angels," the only song not directly to do with Winter or snow, but which calls to mind falling back and making snow angels, and takes us out of the album with the same quiet with which it opened.

At 53 years old her voice has aged into a mellow, much lower register which she uses to great advantage, both singing and performing spoken word sections in some of the songs. But where her age shows most clearly is in the album's quiet authority. For all its extravagant imaginings (some would say "silly," an adjective I suspect she'd be fine with), she evinces no doubt at all about the strength of the album. 2005's "Aerial" was a no-holds-barred foray into the glory of nature on a Summer's day in the sunshine and then a night swimming under a starry sky, and it's narrative and musical thrust took us outdoors to enjoy birdsong, laughter, the ocean--the intense joy of being alive in the natural world. "50 Words for Snow" is that album's counterpoint, shutting us inside on a cold day to roam through a fantastical, but beautiful, interior world in a wistful, rather than joyous frame of mind. The album is long (just over an hour) and requires that one slow down and listen; there are no catchy hooks or pop-chart climbers, but what's on offer instead is a break from chaos and a noisy, intrusive world. Writing about "Aerial" one critic said that no other recording artist allows us such unfettered access to her imagination, and true to form, Kate has again issued an invitation to join her her in that unique place. Settle in, turn the stereo up loud, and enjoy.

A walk on a snowy afternoon

From the opening line of "I was born in a cloud" the 9-minute opening track that evokes the quietness of remembrances of walks through a virgin snowfall where Kate is pleading for someone to catch her as she is falling, falling, falling....like a snowflake in slow motion swirl to earth to her screaming "Let me hear your 50 words for snow" like she is in a sexual ecstasy on the tribal sounding title track. It's a "must own" for Kate Bush fans and lovers of experimental music. Her voice is fragile, powerful, beautiful, unreal, grounded, floating, erotic and many other adjectives all at once. The track list, while small, offers up long compositions...the shortest being 7 minutes. Nothing "radio-friendly", either...which I couldn't care less about.

I got to hear it several times before it went on sale thanks to NPR's "first listen" and it is so beautiful and it is very compelling and her voice does not sound like tires screeching on a wet road (that is a good thing for this listener) as it has sometimes in the past and the stark use of drums and violins support her breathy, etherial voice, making this record true art. There is no "single" off this record and you can't dance to it. It's the type of art that you want to savor in one 67 minute sitting with the beverage of your choice and if snow happens to be falling outside of your window as you cozy up to this recording and maybe your fireplace, then all the better for you. Her piano playing has a light touch as well and it weaves in and out instead of being a main instrument.

Snow has it's jazzy moments, it's rocking moments but mostly it is a quiet, fluid record that demands that you listen with an open heart. I think it's probably the best work she has ever done as an album as a whole (although it has nothing as powerful as Wuthering Heights or anything that will make you immediately cry like The Man with the Child in his Eyes) this is one record that is a whole work and not really just a collection of unrelated songs. All songs evoke memories of winter weather even to the point of "Wild Man" where she is accusing this person of leaving footprints in the snow as a way of finding the unfindable. Or trying to define the undefinable.

You know you want it... How many years have you been waiting, hoping for a new release from Kate? Give it to yourself as an early Christmas gift. This record does not disappoint, unless you are looking for something extremely powerful in a loud way. And if you are new to Kate Bush and love electronica melded with piano and strings with a lovely voice guiding the sound, buy it. OH! And Sir Elton John makes an appearance on this record and it's a great kind of unusual duet and the most rocking track on "Snowed in at Wheeler Street" where Kate suggests that she get a rope and ties them together because they have lost each other so much but have caught glimpses of each other all over the world before this final confrontation.

The most "typical" KB sounding song to me is the final track "Angels" so if you can only afford to download one song, this is the one you want.

I only beg to not compare her to Tori Amos... They truly to my ear sound nothing alike, aside from the fact that they are both women and they play piano.

Startling us still ...

It may surprise people to think about it in these terms, but Kate Bush has been startling audiences with her unique artistic vision in a recording career that now extends across five decades.

She first burst into public view as a teenager in 1978 with her hit single "Wuthering Heights" and debut album The Kick inside. It was then - and remains today - difficult to comprehend that a work so accomplished, so fully realised (and at times, so deeply personal and confronting) could have been produced by a precocious 19 year old.

The 1980s would prove to be challenging decade for many artists who thrived in the 70s. But Bush flourished, producing a peerless trilogy of boldly experimental and startlingly beautiful albums: The Dreaming (1982); Hounds of Love (1985) and The Sensual World (1989). While the 1990s would prove to be more difficult for Bush artistically (and in some respects personally), after a 12 year absence, she returned in 2005 triumphantly, and at the peak of her powers, with the release of the ambitious double album Aerial.

And now, in another new decade, Kate Bush has, for the first time since 1978, rewarded her patient admirers with two new releases. It is probably fair to say that the first of these two, Director's Cut - which featured reworked material from two earlier albums - confused, and divided her very passionate fans in a way that none of her earlier releases had.

However, there is every reason to believe that 50 Words For Snow will come to be viewed as yet another startling triumph. Apart perhaps from the first single, "Wild Man", 50 Words, bears little discernable relationship sonically to anything she has produced before. Its lengthy tracks (only 7 songs over a 65 minute playing time) are linked by the snowy theme. They are intimate, even jazzy at times, and are decidedly more impressionistic than anything she has released before. But even on a first hearing, this is unmistakably Kate Bush, and it has all the emotional depth, haunting beauty and romantic lyricism of the best of her work.

Bush continues to see passion and the possibility of beauty and love in places no one else would think to look - she feels lust for a snowman in "Misty" and compassion for a yeti in "Wild Man". She duets beautifully with her son against a fragile backdrop of gently falling notes ("Snowflake") and with an uncharacteristically subdued Elton John she sings of undying love in "Snowed In at Wheeler Street". The accompaniment, compared at least to her usually lush productions, is starkly minimalistic, but this gentle minimalism is apt given the notionally frigid themes of the album.

But in truth, 50 Words For Snow represents anything but a bleak winter - Bush extracts unimagined warmth and grandeur from the subject matter as only she can. And whether this turns out to be a final recording, or there is still the promise of a new spring to come we should feel blessed that we have once again be allowed to enter her unique and wondrous world.

A must have album for anyone who ever loved her work.

Buble's Christmas masterpiece for the holidays

Christmas is an absolutely beautifully recorded and sung album by the velvety rat pack voice of Michael Buble. The arrangements are stellar featuring big band and full orchestra backings by some of the best musicians in the business with a great deal of input from Michael himself and genius producer David Foster. Additional production by Bob Rock gives an especially rewarding re-work of Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You. Michael slows the tempo way down and turns Mariah's festive version into a very romantic and longing song of desire and passion. What a great version of one of the best Christmas songs written in the last 20 years!

Also quite amazing is Michael's version of Christmas (Baby Please Come Home). Here he wisely sticks to Darlene Love's original arrangement though the brass and drums are recorded so well and sound so bright it might almost make you forget her original version which is also fantastic. Buble modestly said that he might not have her pipes but he sure made up for it with his own punch and swagger. Another classic is given the Buble treatment and the listener cannot help but get drawn into the singers desire to get his baby home as soon as possible.

There are an amazing 15 songs on this version which includes all traditional songs except for one original written by Michael and his piano player Alan Chang, Cold December Night, another romantic and well sung ballad that would go quite well with an eggnog sitting by the fireplace. There are spicy versions of Holly Jolly Christmas and Jingle Bells as well as an awesome duet with Shania Twain on White Christmas that borrows a great deal from the Drifters version featured in the Home Alone movie.

Michael sings a hauntingly beautiful version of Ave Maria where he really shows the richness and clarity of his amazingly beautiful diction and singing technique. Remember this is a guy who closes out many of his concerts by putting the microphone down on the stage and singing the last song without amplification. Silent Night features a tender brass arrangement at the beginning that segues into a beautiful children's choir that sings along with Michael.

Michael Buble's Christmas ranks right up there with the greatest holiday records of all time by Elvis Presley, Nat King Cole and Johnny Mathis. This album is immaculately sung and well produced and is a timeless masterpiece for the ages.

Reprise/ Warner presents "CHRISTMAS" (2011), featuring Michael Bublé, finally a singer under the age of 50 who actually listens to the lyrics he's singing and interprets them in a unique way --- Bublé has a rich, smooth, beautiful voice that gives these songs a new dimension --- And his diction...wow, there's a concept --- Listen to "ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU" and "I'LL BE HOME FOR CHRISTMAS" and you'll see what I mean, under stated arrangements with that special Bublé touch ~ the last track is "MIS DESEO/FELIZ NAVIDAD" (duet with Thalia), is a fun listen, as you can hear both of the singers enjoying the moment --- Just in time for the holidays a true gem for any Christmas collection.

Traditional, Laid-back Feel

Michael Buble's "Christmas" is a must-addition to your Christmas music collection. This collection of songs offers the traditional, laid-back feel that every Christmas album should embody and is reminiscent of albums from great crooners of the past. While many big stars attempt to rework and mangle Christmas song, Michael Buble chooses to showcase his talent by adding his stellar vocals to classic arrangements that need to be done justice, although the album also adds Buble's signature touch to songs such as "All I Want for Christmas is You." After getting this CD, I think Christmas is going to start early this year as I'll be enjoying Michael Buble's songs every day.

A Change, but for the better...

Wow. I am really shocked how much I like Mylo Xyloto. I am a long-time Coldplay fan and just love their music, but I wasn't sure about this record due to the slight change in style. The first half of the record I was mostly familiar with due to the singles, live versions and the side A sampler. The only song on side B that I had heard was Major Minus. Obviously, the second part of the record was what I was looking forward to the most as it was mostly new, unheard Coldplay!

I can definitely see why this record has fans divided. It is a new sound for Coldplay in terms of production and direction. However, there are many tracks where 'early' Coldplay is still there, just under new layers. Utimately, I gave the record a 4/5, with a point deducted for some unnecessary over-production. I do truly feel it deserves it though. It is a good mix of all the previous records, while still moving forward.

Mylo Xyloto:

Just beautiful. I love this as the opening track and the transition into Hurts Like Heaven. Although, I am with others who have said it's hard to listen to just MX or HLH by themselves...

Hurts Like Heaven:

Probably the track I was most fearing as I love the live version and people were saying it was so different on the record. I was pleasantly surprised that it did not crush my enjoyment of the track! I LOVE this song! Yes, it is a bit over-produced, but I also think that makes it interesting. There are so many sounds and layers to the track that a good set of headphones brings out.

Paradise:

No surprises here. The second single. It's definitely a grower. I liked it when I first heard it, but the introduction is just fantastic the more I listen to it. It fits so well on the record now I have heard it in context.

Charlie Brown:

This is my favourite track on the record. It is such a great track and should definitely be released as the next single! The piano part at the end is just fantastic. This will be a big hit and crowd-pleaser!

Us Against The World:

LOVE! This is such an amazing song! I adore the introduction. I loved this track live and this version just makes it all the better. Only quip is I wish Will's duet portion was more pronounced. The first song on the record that sounds like 'early' Coldplay material.

M.M.I.X.:

This instrumental makes Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall flow within the context of the record. If this was not here, it would be such an abrupt change from UATW.

Again, no surprises. The first single and a really upbeat and optimistic song. It is pretty dancey for Coldplay, but it's a great song nonetheless.

Major Minus:

I had already heard this from the Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall EP. It's a fantastic track and really like it. I would have preferred less distortion on the verse vocals, but Jonny's guitar solo is awesome!

U.F.O:

This is such a lovely acoustic track and reminds me so much of 'early' Coldplay. The melody is great, but I just wish it was a tad bit longer.

Princess of China:

I was really surprised by this one! First, Rihanna being on the track is strange, but it works somehow. I think this might be one of her better vocal performances. The song itself is very RnB to me, but I do like it. I am surprised to be honest as I was going in thinking I was going to really dislike it, but I think if this is released as a single, it will probably be a big hit.

Up In Flames:

I really didn't think I was going to like this song. I had heard a clip of the Austin City Limits live version and it just didn't do anything for me. However, within the context of the record and with the added production, I think this is a great track. Again, it reminds me of 'early' Coldplay and is a welcome addition to the record.

A Hopeful Transmission:

Probably the best instrumental on the record. It flows so well into Don't Let It Break Your Heart.

Wow. One of my favourite tracks! As with Hurts Like Heaven and Major Minus, I wish there wasn't as much distortion on Chris' voice, but really that's the only negative I see on this stellar track!

Up With The Birds:

A fantastic closer! Again, like 'early' Coldplay but with a modern twist. It starts so atmospheric, I had no clue what direction it was going to go! It's a beautiful track and such a great way to close the record!

Different, but in such a good way!

I know that, for reasons unfathomable to me, it isn't very cool to be a fan of Coldplay these days. It makes me sad that my favorite band gets so much hate. But I have been a super fan from the very beginning, and this album really cements my love for this fantastic group. Mylo Xyloto very accurately reflects the Coldplay you see in concert. Hyper, fun, happy guys, and a sweetness that makes me want to cry a little. Four men whose love for making music shines through. Yeah, this album is different from Parachutes and A Rush of Blood To the Head (Sparks is now and forever my favorite song), but I've loved listening to this band grow. I wouldn't want to listen to 5 albums of the exact same music. Stand-outs for me on Mylo Xyloto are Paradise and Us Against The World. Paradise is some beautiful pop and UATW is a classic, sweet Coldplay ballad. For me, this album is just another great reason to be a Coldplay fan.

Viva La Mylo !!

I was hoping the latest offering from Coldplay would match their last LP, which was a tall task in my book. "MX's" predecessor, "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends", was a dark, progressive journey into the realm of broken hearts, war, death and glimpses of hope and prosperity. The songwriting, producing and overall effort was top notch. It remains on the top of my Desert Island Disc list. To say I had lofty expectations for "MX" would be an understatement.

After one listen I am proud to say that my expectations were easily met, and at times surpassed.

I love music that encompasses a thick sound. Coming from the school of progressive rock, my two favorite bands (Genesis and Marillion) always had full, dynamic properties to their songs, many washed with synthesizers, reverb and other atmospheric effects. And it wasn't as a gimmick; it was because those properties were necessary to sustain the mood. When "Viva" came out, songs like "Cemeteries of London" and "42" made great use of these techniques, and luckily it continues on "MX". Strings, synthesizers, and other choral-like sounds are doused over many of the songs, and guess what....it works! "Paradise" is absolutely gorgeous, highly atmospheric, and sounds perhaps a distant relative of "Lovers in Japan" mixed with "Strawberry Swing." "Every Teardrop is a Waterfall" is a bright, energetic celebration, with reverbs, soaring guitar and thick chords surrounding it. "Charlie Brown" will no doubt be a live anthem, with a catchy hook and, dare I say, groovin' sound.

Although I am praising the use of effects heavily, there are moments of stripped-down glory reminiscent of "Parachutes." Songs like "U.F.O." and "Up in Flames" remind me of the early years, displaying a very simple sound, if you will, showing that Coldplay can write and perform quality songs that can both rattle the walls and yet be calming and soothing. No doubt these lads have mastered the skill of diversity.

The only letdown on this album was the song "Princess of China." I'll probably get flamed for this, but I really don't like Rihanna's voice. If I wanted a nasally, dime-a-dozen singer who is pushed by the record company merely because of their looks or "trendiness", I'll put on a Lady Gaga CD and pray for my ears to fall off. It's a shame, because the song itself is actually catchy and fun, but her voice detracts from it. Again, just my opinion, take it or leave it.

I love this band for many reasons.....the humbleness of its members, their songwriting, their live shows (which are incredible), and the fact that they offer their music on vinyl. Speaking of which, Amazon is stocking the vinyl version (available Nov 1st), and the band's website is offering a Special Edition bundle with a graffiti pic disc (on 180 gram vinyl), CD, book, and tons of other stuff in a box set. Pick your poison....there are many ways to celebrate the new "MX" offering.

Thank you Coldplay for continuing to make quality music and giving the fans such great live shows. We look forward to seeing you on tour in the States in 2012 !!

There s a lot about the singer that's become familiar during his five years as a country hitmaker, after all, he has spent more weeks at number one on the radio than any other country artists in the last 12 months. But none of what he does comes out quite like anyone else. The blues-tinges licks at the ends of his phrases - there's a ring of familiarity about them, but you can't really link them to any other artists. The smokey guitar riffs that have become a signature - they're built on sounds that have come before, but they don't really belong to anyone else in the country genre, either. The small-town themes that pervade many of his songs - that's all been done before, but not quite with the unwavering honesty that Aldean applies to the subject.

Rockin' good country

Jason Aldean is an artist that quite obviously puts a lot of energy into his performances and his music in general. He is a great cross of country and rocker, perhaps a cowboy rocker, with a brand and style of music that gets you energized while also perhaps smacking you in the gut a bit.

Dirt Road Anthem starts the disc out with a rapping sound owed to the fact it's a cover of a Colt Ford track (see Country Is As Country Does (W/Dvd), for example). Aldean's version of the tune is quite enjoyable and serves to mix things up a bit from the more traditional Jason Aldean songs that filled his last album, or at least filled the radio airwaves compliments of that last album (Wide Open).

Church Pew or Bar Stool gets back to the more expected Jason Aldean ballad. Some might complain that it is a sound that is too familiar and doesn't venture far enough from what has preceeded it (in past tunes, not just in the song that preceeds it on the album). To me there's really nothing wrong with that sound, and knowing that is what fans wanted and expected, delivering on it is just what Aldean should have done (and did).

My Kinda Party is, by now, the well known first single from this new album. It speaks for itself with the high energy that makes Aldean the fun show to catch live and in person, as well as being a song that pumps you up when you hear it on the radio as you drive to or from work, school or wherever. Certainly the kind of song that shows the reason that Aldean carries a bit of the southern rocker badge around. For those that have only heard the song on the radio, the album version of the song seems to be a bit longer and expounds a bit on the band's rocking jam session.

Just Passing Through goes back to the familiar ballad-y sound. It's a bit of love song with the cowboy bent. It's your world, I'm just in it... Lucky me, just being there to hold you.

Fly Over States is a great patriotic tune that pokes at the people that look down their noses at the states out in the middle of nowhere, where our food is grown, where working men (and women) toil at their lives and jobs with little attention or demands from the people in the business suits, in the first class seats, etc.

Don't You Wanna Stay is a duet with Kelly Clarkson that simply works. The blending of her voice with his is spot on and each hit all the right notes with their portions of the song. Unless the video for this song is horribly botched, I could see this one spending many weeks in the video top 20 chart, as well as a lot of time in the radio charts if released (inevitably I believe it will be) as a single.

See You When I See You... strum, strum, strum... hmm, perhaps a bit familiar sounding, or should I say similarly sounding as some of the songs I know from Wide Open and Jason Aldean, but again that is not necessarily bad.

It Ain't Easy [... lovin' me] is another cowboy love song, told from the side of the cowboy that knows he is not without his flaws.

Texas Was You moves back into a sound more in keeping with the Eagles of Desperado perhaps crossed with a bit of Hotel California. Some of the guitar work in this track reminds me quite a bit of the readily identifiable work of Joe Walsh that shines through in tracks on Hotel California.

Country Boy's World goes back to the love song/country ballad theme. Let me show you around a country boy's world... There are plenty of female fans that would likely be happy to have Aldean do just that ;)

I Ain't Ready to Quit might simply be a signal to listeners that Aldean isn't done with this album at this point. Nope, still more to go and more to enjoy, including Heartache That Don't Stop Hurting and Days Like These, capped off with If She Could See Me Now.

Really, I don't really see, or should I say hear, a clunker in the whole album. Some of these songs may find lesser favor than other Aldean tracks, but really I'd be happy to do as I've already done and simply throw all of these great tunes into in my playlist along with those of his previous albums. Definitely a good purchase for me (though this is one that I pre-ordered from another site, famous for Tunes that play on certain types of I-ndividual devices). I would love to have waited for the physical media here, but impatience got the better of me and I clicked the pre-order button just to be sure I'd have these tracks in hand as soon as possible on release day.

Jason Aldean's "My Kind Of Party", is his best to date! He could of probably taken 3 or 4 songs off the disc, and made it a sure fire 5 star release, but he has got some great tracks none the less. I recommend, "Tattoos On This Town", "Dirt Road Anthem", the hit "My Kind Of Party", "Fly Over States", "It Ain't Easy", "Texas Was You", "Ain't Ready To Quit", a hit in the making "Days Like These" and the Kelly Clarkson duet sure to go top 5 "Don't You Wanna Stay". Great guitar on this album.

Solid, Not Perfect

With My Kinda Party, Georgia country artist Jason Aldean delivers a solid fourth-effort. The singers profile has now been sufficiently lifted enough to make 'My Kinda Party' an anticipated album expected to debut near the top of the Billboard Album Charts. Besides the looming commercial success, Aldean puts together a strong affair with sound performances and strong songwriting. There are no outright misses here, though there are some tracks that could have stood some slight improvements. Overall, having never listened/purchased a Jason Aldean album, I was impressed.

"Tattoos on This Town" is a solid opening cut, with a rich production filled with all the traditional blues-driven country stops - great sounding guitars, solid bass line, and soulful, church-sounding organ. Aldean sings with conviction with his voice sounding most potent on the chorus. "Dirt Road Anthem" is equally inviting, if a shade less captivating than "Tattoos on this Town." A bit odd are the spoken word moments (country rap?), but Aldean makes up for any laxness on the catchy chorus: "I'm chillin' on a dirt road, laid back, swerving like I'm George Jones..." "Church Pew or Bar Stool" proves a better cut, accentuating the organ once more alongside a nice mix of strummed acoustic guitars as well as electric guitars. Here in particular, Aldean's vocal performance shines.

"Just Passing Through" is incredibly authentic, with superb attention to songwriting and production work. On the verses, Aldean's voice shines over the production while on the refrain, nice harmonized vocals add `the cherry on top.' "Fly Over States" is a disappointment following four nearly-equally strong performances, but it is still enjoyable enough without being remarkable. "My Kinda Party," the title cut, atones for the improprieties of "Fly Over States" finding Aldean rocking out to a faster cut. A jam session appears toward the end of the cut; it seems fitting given the `party' mood of the track and the roots feel of this album.

"I Ain't Ready to Quit" is another exceptional cut noted for contrasting tempo to "My Kinda Party" and strong songwriting. Again, a strong chorus brings this cut all together: "Don't start thinking I'm gonna stop, giving it all I've got..." "It Ain't Easy" also lays well on this album, focusing on a simple/catchy refrain with no frills songwriting. "Country Boy's World" is strong, but not as strong as the best and feels a shade `same-y' by this point in the album. The chorus is less remarkable, though it's still enjoyable enough to hear the southern singer play on the `tried-and-true' formula of the `country boy' country song.

"The Heartache That Don't Stop Hurting" revives the album once more for another valedictory number laced with organ, strong songwriting, and exceptional vocals by Aldean. "Texas Was You" only hopes to rival its predecessor, but it does so with great finesse incorporating elements of rock into this overt country effort. "Don't You Wanna Stay" featuring Kelly Clarkson is NOT a miss, but it is a track that seems a bit of a wasted opportunity. Two great voices come together pretty well, but the song itself seems clunky and sort of unbalanced at times. Smartly, producers mix powerhouse Clarkson into the background more, but what they don't consider is the over-melodramatic approach taking on this cut. With a few more tweaks, "Don't You Wanna Stay" would have been much more effective.

"See You When I See You" again serves as atonement, even if it brings nothing revolutionarily new to the table. "If She Could See Me Now," the penultimate cut is solid too, but not a standout. Closer "Days Like These" ends the album solidly, not trouncing the best cuts.

Essentially, Jason Aldean has crafted a well-rounded country album that is worth the time to listen to (and a solid buy). It may not be the best country album of 2010, but it is definitely strong by all means - and a capable effort.

The most hotly anticipated album release of this New Year comes not from someone rammed into the collective consciousness by their media ubiquity. Duffy is an unknown quantity at this point, having performed but a small number of gigs, mostly in support of The Magic Numbers, and having only just begun to be seen on TV, most notably with recent appearances on Jools Holland's Later and New Year Hootenanny.

Yet her soulful voice has already beguiled many of the nation's musical tastemakers and news of its beauty and of the strength of her songs is spreading by word of mouth even as you read these words. Radio One's Jo Whiley chose Duffy's title track and album taster `Rockferry' as her Single of the Week in late November, further adding to the momentum. Now, as the comparisons fly (Dusty Springfield has emerged as the favourite), it's time to discover her for yourself.

Duffy was born and spent her childhood years in the north Wales coastal community of Nefyn, a place too remote to be driven by style wars or opposing music factions (the nearest record counter was a bus ride away and only stocked the Top 40). The upbringing she describes is one in which everyone had to rub along together, making do and mending, accepting each other and their tastes without prejudice.

Having no CD collection of her own, her first real musical memory is of walking into the kitchen unannounced to find her mother and stepfather dancing to Rod Stewart. The first steps she took towards defining her own personal identity came when she borrowed one of her dad's VHS tapes of the `60s TV show `Ready, Steady, Go!'. "It had The Beatles, the Stones, the Walker Brothers, Sandie Shaw and Millie singing `My Boy Lollipop'. So sexy and exciting! I played it again and again until finally it disintegrated." Says former Suede guitarist and record producer Bernard Butler of this artlessness, "Duffy managed to grow up without any concept of what was cool or current, what she should or shouldn't like, how to behave or even how to sing. For her, coming to London at all was the stuff of fairytales."

"And to come here to write songs with some random bloke who'd been recommended to her, me? It meant taking two buses and then two trains and took all day. Then she'd do the same in reverse to get home, playing the music she'd just made to old ladies she encountered on the journey. It's hard for cynical music industry types to get their heads around just how far removed she was from our world, geographically and in every other way. But what you've got as a result is someone who acts and sings completely and unselfconsciously from the heart. That's a rare and magical thing."

Butler was introduced to Duffy by Rough Trade's Jeannette Lee who,in August 2004 and after hearing demos recorded in this or that mate's home, became the singer's mentor and manager. For Duffy, to have not just a friend but also point of both safety and reference in the strange new world she found herself in was crucial to her own musical development and sense of self.

"People keep saying to me, `You've made a great record' but I can't take that in because I didn't do it on my own. Jeannette and I made `Rockferry' together and she's been with me every step of the way, broadening my horizons, introducing me to people I can trust." Butler was just one of them: having written the glorious, chorus-free, utterly hypnotic `Rockferry' together at the beginning of the project, they then worked on a further three of the ten tracks on what is already being talked about as 2008's most important debut release. Jimmy Hogarth & Steve Booker are the other collaborators on this classic-in-waiting.

What can you expect to hear? The title track and album opener, as atmospheric, slow-building and idiosyncratic song as you could hope for, leads into a collection of original material that some might call retro in feel (those Dusty flavours, that girl group vibe) but which Duffy herself prefers to identify as classic. You'll find arrangements as sparsely effective as those against which Dionne Warwick told her Bacharach & David-wrought tales of heartbreak in the early 1960s. You'll find lush choruses and swooning hooks (as perfected by the late Miss Springfield and various distinguished others). But this is far from pastiche.

What you'll find instead is irrefutable evidence of a significant new talent, and one that has developed in splendid isolation, not in reaction to market forces or the input of focus groups and industry experts. Duffy is the real, unspoiled original deal. "People keep asking me where my voice comes from and the fact is I don't know," says the brightest new star of 2008. "Why are your eyes the colour they are? It's no answer at all but it's the only one I have."

Rockferry, the Welsh singer's lovingly constructed debut album, has already succeeded beyond expectations, and although Duffy may not quite be the ingénue portrayed by a clever press campaign (she nearly won a local television talent show a few years back while a single credited to Aimee Duffy is still available on iTunes) she is surely the most appealing of the current flood of young soul sirens. The astonishing title track, co-written by Bernard Butler, sounded like a lost transmission that had taken decades to get through as soon as it hit radio last year. But the gently rolling soul ballad "Stepping Stone", that strapping, inescapable monster hit "Mercy", the ice cool "Serious" (the one time she really does channel the spirit of Dusty Springfield) and the wistful, elegant "Warwick Avenue" are similarly effective. Suggestions by some that Rockferry is little more than sixties pastiche are churlish. Butler's previous work with David McAlmont (featured here as a backing singer) showed his skill at writing and arranging the dramatic, while her other collaborators such as Steve Booker and the team of Jimmy Hogarth and Eg White are hardly lightweights. But despite some wonderful orchestral settings, it's Duffy's terrific voice that makes this so satisfying, even overpowering Butler's exquisitely underplayed guitar work on "Rockferry" itself. Growling the blues on "Syrup & Honey" or belting it out over his lovingly arranged wall of sound on "Distant Dreamer", she sets the tone throughout, several of her songs dealing with escape, both physical and romantic. The sound of someone singing herself to stardom, Rockferry is at times genuinely amazing. --Steve Jelbert

Despite the huge marketing hype, it shows undoubted talent and 60's Soul atmospherics.

"Rockferry" is the most gorgeous evocation of classic pop-soul for years, and make no mistake, this is an album which wears its nostalgic credentials with no apology, only the new single "Mercy" betraying a hint of the 21st century about it.

"Warwick Avenue" lopes into action with a hint of The Temptations' "My Girl", "Stepping Stone'" s pensive intro seems to scream "Walk On By" and "Syrup And Honey" has more than a whiff of the Stax sound about it.

And then there are all the production nods towards Motown and Phil Spector - the tambourines set in cavernous reverb, the searing strings, the tremolo guitars.

All of this would be so much stylistic dressing-up were it not for the quality of the songs and the allure of Duffy's voice - a full-throated expressive wail which is never less than equal to the big arrangements.

The comparisons with Dusty Springfield are so wide of the mark.

Dusty was a much lustier performer.

Yes Duffy has the same look and works in the same pop landscape Dusty strode, but Duffy's voice is much more steeped in the tone of the poppier Motown songstrels.

If Duffy is the new anybody, she is the new Amy Winehouse, which makes it particularly ironic that the Welsh girl's missing forename is also Amy/Aimee.

For Duffy, like Winehouse, is utterly immersed in classic soul music, but where Winehouse now seems blurry and damaged, Duffy is bright-eyed and bushy-tailed. Duffy is the sweet to Winehouse's sour, the blonde to Amy's tattered brunette.

This is an album every bit as solid as "Back To Black", with tracks that sound like dusty soul standards.

The result is mighty good pop.

The Very Best of Dusty Springfield

Girlfriend can SING!

I'm sure a lot of people are going out and buying Duffy's debut album, "Rockferry," after hearing the single "Mercy." I am one of those people, and when I listened to the CD in its entirety, I was blown away because "Mercy" is probably the weakest song on the whole album, which says a lot because "Mercy" is such an amazing song. However, the rest of the album is even better! Duffy's voice is out of this world. It's soulful, powerful, and absolutely beautiful. People who compare her to the likes of Nina Simone and Dusty Springfield are not exaggerating, but Duffy is really in a league of her own, as she brings a youthful panache to every song.

As for the album itself, I don't even know where to begin. All the songs are incredible. If I have to pick a favorite, it's probably the title track, "Rockferry," which is amazing. My jaw literally dropped when I listened to it for the first time. Other highlights include the wistful "Warwick Avenue," the soulful ballad "Stepping Stone," the blues infused "Syrup & Honey," and the inspiring "Distant Dreamer."

My one complaint about this CD is that it's too short...there are only 10 songs, but they are OUTSTANDING songs. Duffy has an amazing career ahead of her, and if you only buy one CD this year, make it "Rockferry."

A commendable debut album

This debut from sultry Welsh chanteuse Duffy is yet another wonderful trip back in time. A Dusty Springfield for our time, Duffy evokes memories of the simple, carefree and optimistic 60s in easy-going songs of love, both longed for and lost. I find her voice and style of delivery totally endearing and the music, some produced by Bernard Butler (formerly of McAlmont & Butler; David McAlmont actually sings backing vocals on a couple of tracks), some by Jimmy Hogarth, some by Steve Booker and all co-written by Duffy and her aforementioned producers, is absolutely top notch.

That's the good news. The not so good news is that once again, I feel like I'm listening to a singer I'm not so sure I believe. In fairness, she gets by and takes me with her on most of the songs but when she sings on "Mercy", just for instance - a wonderfully breezy song that made it to #1 on the UK singles chart with ease and stayed there for four weeks or so - though the song is all about pleading and desperation but she just doesn't sound at all desperate. I don't hear any angst. It's the music that makes the tune for me, not so much her singing.

I remember the first time I heard Mary J Blige's "Be Happy" and being reduced to tears. I genuinely believed that she wasn't (happy, that is). My heart went out to her and I remember questioning my own definition of happiness at the time. It might sound ridiculous - in my defence, I was very young - but when I first heard Donna Summer's "MacAurthur Park", I actually believed that someone had left a cake out in the rain and that poor Donna was never going to find the recipe again. I felt distraught for her. Even Madonna had me believing her when she sang songs like "Live To Tell" and "Oh Father". Eva Cassidy had me believing everything she sang without exception.

My point basically, is that I feel that singers, especially those who decide they want to do soul, should either try to sing about what they know or develop incredibly good imaginations and/or acting skills. I have to be able to totally believe what your singing to me about and if you really want to be heralded as the real McCoy, I think that takes a bit more than a just good voice and good music.

But like I said, Duffy does impress on a number of the songs here. My favourites include "Rockferry", "Stepping Stone", "Syrup & Honey", "Hanging On Too Long", "Mercy" (I might not believe a word she's singing but it's such a catchy, bouncy song, it's impossible to resist it. I also love the video) and "I'm Scared" - all amazing songs on which Duffy truly shines. Six out of ten isn't to be sniffed at so in balance, I have to say it's a commendable debut album well worth checking out.

I just got back from a visit to the US and "Mercy" has been all over the radio. It also seems quite popular with MTV/VH1 "reality" shows who've been using it quite a bit either as theme or promo music, which is also quite telling. It went straight in at #1 on the UK album charts when it was released here back in March and she's had considerable success with it. I think she's going to have very similar and well-deserved success with it in America. I say good luck to her.

Superb; A Stand-out effort

Cee Lo Green (aka Thomas Callaway) is one of the most intriguing artists of modern times. Green possesses one of the most soulful voices out there as a vocally, yet he additionally indulges into rap (he was a member of Goodie Mob back in the day). Perhaps the prominence of Green's soulful, unmistakable voice bowed in his turn with Danger Mouse in the exceptional duo Gnarls Barkley where Green's superb vocal performance made "Crazy" a mega-crossover hit. On The Lady Killer, Green spoils the listener with his distinctive vocals, mixed with his ingenious production work that expertly mixes anachronistic 70s soul and modern hip-hop sensibility. 'The Lady Killer' probably should have failed to make a cohesive effort given Cee-Lo's schizophrenic tendencies as a musician, but instead, the effort is one that is more `exceptional' than `flawed' in nature. Built loosely around the concept of `killing ladies,' 'The Lady Killer' is certainly enjoyable (maybe entertaining is the word).

After an odd, manic introduction sets the tone ("The Lady Killer Theme (Intro)), the synthesizer/string-laden/neo-soul produced "Bright Lights Bigger City" proves to be a smart, soulful opener. The strings are lovely and truly heighten the `1970s' sound which Green is trying to convey. The `hook' is solid, if simple and Green's vocals are exceptional. On viral hit and first single "F$%& You," Green has crafted a `once-in-a lifetime' novelty cut that greatly heightens his somewhat underrated profile. The track has surprising been embraced despite its profanity laden songwriting. In all respects, it is a `five-star' performance with superb production work (think 1960s/70s), catchy, strong songwriting, and a `killer' performance by Cee-Lo.

"Wildflower" is enjoyable as well, if less of a `victory lap' than "F$%& You." The hook of "Wildflower" is the highlight of the track, finding Green singing: "wonderful wildflower, oh open up, let me see... share your sunshine with me." "Bodies" is a true highlight, featuring superb production work with a full bass line underpinning the whole production work (not to mention superbly produced drums). Easily one of my favorite tracks, the hook is unmistakable here: "They said that chivalry is dead, then why is her body in my bed/ at sunrise morning papers read, they found a body in my bed!" "Love Gun," featuring Lauren Bennett follows, though the track itself seems a bit too indulgent and manic for even Green's own good. Bennett's guest vocals are assertive and captivating, but you cannot help but feel as a listener perhaps it's the slightest bit much. The track is best when Cee Lo performs, meaning Bennett never overshadows Green in the least.

"Satisfied," like "Love Gun" is solid, though not `valedictory.' Green's lower register is exploited here and while it sounds ok, all listeners will be happier when Green ascends into his golden, shining upper register. "I Want You" atones for any missteps as of yet with absolutely gorgeous vocals by Green and superb production work. "Cry Baby" may be less memorable than "I Want You," but it is potent and well constructed. "Fool For You" featuring Philip Bailey is better, with the beautiful sounds of 1970s soul pervading the production work. Cee Lo's lead vocals here are fantastic, particularly his upper register.

"It's OK" and "Old Fashioned" are exceptional moments. On "It's OK," the vocal production is stunning with Cee Lo's vocals sounding `clear as a bell.' As always the hook is exceptional ("It's ok, to say that you love you, I think of you, still thinking of you..."). On second single "Old Fashioned" Cee Lo really gets to show of his distinct vocals. "No One's Gonna Love You" proves to be a superb closing track that is brief in duration. The reprise of "The Lady Killer Theme" (this time an outro) closes the album.

Essentially, The Lady Killer is a superb effort and one that stands out from the more `generic' R&B of 2010 easily. I wish more artists would embrace being `unique' like Cee Lo, Janelle Monáe, and Erykah Badu; it would make for a much more interesting music scene in the R&B world. 4 stars.

Why have more people not reviewed this? The Lady Killer is one of the most amazing albums I have heard in years. I am usually a rock music type of person, but I can make an exception for this album. All of the songs are very catchy and very well done. The whole thing has a very strong retro / Motown vibe. Just listen to the song samples and you'll be hooked. Give this one a try, even if you don't normally like the hip-hop genre.

Excellence In The Modern Music World

After nearly eight years away from solo recording and wading through other projects such as the universally acclained Gnarles Barkley projects with Danger Mouse,this multi talented vocalist/songwriter/producer/rapper and Georgia native drops his third effort under his own name. As a man with a wide range of emotion and power in his voice,writing and production style this album brings in all of the different types of things that Cee Lo values musically:the cross generational funk/soul/R&B/hip-hop potentcy of his musical sound,his dramatic style of transitioning between minor chords in the manner of many of his forbearers and perhaps most importantly his vocal style. Because on the surface one might see Cee Lo as something of an oversinger because of the loud,gospel fired wail of his voice. But fact of the matter is he also knows about a lesson many R&B vocalists have had to learn the hard way often enough these days. That is that if one UNDER-sings enough in order to maintain a certain "less is more" ethic than one might just find themselves with a dull,boring sound as a result. It's all too common for someone to confuse the difference between oversinging and a spiritually involved and often joyous singer whose only pushing themselves to the very end of their ability. And this represents not only the nature of Cee-Lo's singing but his music and general persona. One of the best examples of this overall on this album is "Bright Lights Bigger City" which is wrapped in a swath of echoplexed electro new wave style polyphonic synth bursts,a tight and pulsing beat and one of the cleanest,funkiest early 80's Louis Johnson bumping bassline courtesy of Tony Reyes. A good section of this album showcases a mixture of Cee Lo's southern roots and Chicago/Detroit style soul slickness as well on songs such as "F**ck You","Wildflower","Satified","I Want You","Cry Baby" and "It's OK". Not only is the music as supercharged a retro soul/funk sound as Cee-Lo's voice but manage their combination of the slick moves and blue light parties of Northern Soul but also the BBQ rib grease and breaded chicken wings style hump of late 60's Southern funk. "Bodies" on the other hand is an extremely exciting song;an intensely passionately sensual lyric expressing Cee-Lo's sense of sexual and romantic prowess married to a dramatic,string filled midtempo arrangement right out of the Ike Hayes/Curtis Mayfield schools of cinematic soul. Philip Bailey shows up to lend his still angelic vocals to the backround of the very stop/start Charles Stepney style sound of "Fool For You" and the album concludes with the chunky soul ballads "Old Fasioned" and "No One's Gonna Love You". This is by no means a hip-hop album in the exact sense but since it's produced in a somewhat hip-hop friendly fasion as much retro soul today is you'll get the same of this being a simiarly themed siphon through which the music flows as opposed to merely a carbon copy tribute. It's on albums like this that musically and vocally the past,present and future of R&B/soul/funk and hip-hop meet at the crossroads.

I have been waiting anxiously for this to come out. I've wanted my own copy of "The Trails", a haunting song I first heard at the September concert. I'm looking forward to "Tears for Jerusalem", too. I feel I can honestly rate this 5 stars without hearing the CD's first because I love everything Tommy Emmanuel has done in the past. He is beyond phenomenal on the guitar - and not so bad as a singer/entertainer either.

I received this 2 CD set very quickly after ordering it through Emmanuel's website. I am enjoying it as much as anticipated. "The Trails" and "Tears for Jerusalem" are especially poignant and haunting and both are new recordings of Emmanuel's to this album. I have marked the songs that I believe are exclusive to this album with an * above. "Guitar Boogie" has been on other albums of Emmanuel's but this is really a rip roaring version. I really enjoyed all the new songs on the album, especially "The Welsh Tornado", "The Mighty Mouse" and "Willie's Shades". John Knowles, a Certified Guitar Player(CGP) as is Emmanuel, is great on "The Tennessee Waltz" and "He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother". And Doyle Dykes and Emmanuel play a smooth version of "Tapestry".

This album was worth waiting for. The music of Emmanuel NEVER disappoints. The artwork and presentation on the CD cover are pretty classy, also. Thanks again, Tommy!

Simply the best acoustic guitarist in the world...

Anyone who hasn't heard Tommy Emmanuel play the acoustic guitar has yet to experience one of life's greatest pleasures. Sincerely, like Liberace or Burt Bacharach on the piano, or like Bela Fleck on the banjo, Tommy has truly reached the pinnacle of what one can do (or ever be EXPECTED to do) on an acoustic guitar. I have (grimace) played the guitar for almost 50 years, and every time I see him in concert, I always have two thoughts -- to go home and practice harder than I ever have in my life, or to take the guitar and toss it into the fireplace and use it for kindling wood. I have seen Mr. Emmanuel three times in concert, and have had the joy of meeting him in person twice -- and as proficient as he is on stage, he is every bit as cordial and congenial off-stage. He's a true gentle soul of a man who finally is at peace with himself and where he fits in the world. And it surely shows in his music.

Highly recommended on this disc are a few of his staples -- Fingerlakes and Welsh Tornado (although the MP3 ID shows this as "Welsh Tonado"), and a song he has probably performed 100,000 times, "Guitar Boogie" -- although never in this light. Victor Wooten (from Bela Fleck and the Flecktones fame) is slicker than STP Oil Treatment on the bass, and the two of them turn this country classic into a rip-roaring jazzy fun-fest. You know when Tommy is happy with a song, because he laughs heartily at the end of it. And he does at the end of this wonderful version of Guitar Boogie.

To sum it up, Tommy Emmanuel doesn't PLAY music. Tommy Emmanuel IS music.

A Rousing Return to Form

Despite the fact that 2007's Challengers wound up becoming a better album as time went on, most people still viewed it as a disappointment in comparison to the near-flawless Twin Cinema. Those same people should be pleased then with the latest from A.C. Newman's group of power-poppers, Together. Eschewing Challenger's eccentricities for the more mainstream and catchy aspects of Twin Cinema, Together is more of a return to form than a reinvention. Songs like "Crash Years" and "Your Hands (Together)" come crashing down on the listener like a giant reminder of what made The New Pornographers such an endearing act to begin with. They parallel classics like "Sing Me Spanish Techno" or "Electric Version" flawlessly, and inspire such a visceral joy that repeat listens are almost guaranteed.

Neko Case regains a little bit of the spotlight that she lost on Challengers, and the result is nothing short of amazing. Her performance on "My Shephard" rivals some of her best solo work, and her vocals on "Up In the Dark" play flawlessly with Newman's, easily creating one of the best songs that the group has ever put together. Dan Bejar's songs are just as amazing. "Silver Jenny Dollar" may lack some of the lyrical charm of "Myriad Harbour," but the rest of the band makes up for that small misstep with flawless performances that keep the song interesting. "Daughter of Sorrow" is even better, but there's hardly any disguising that this is a Destroyer song dressed up in New Pornographers clothing. It has got all the grandeur of Bejar's greatest songs (think "European Oils" from Destroyer's Rubies), but completely overpowers his solo work with the help of his bandmates. I love it!

Together isn't all pomp and fanfare, however. Newman takes a few opportunities to slow things down and get emotional. "Valkyrie in the Roller Disco" is easily the most gorgeous song to release in 2010 thus far. Its subdued beauty is unparalleled by any other song the band has ever recorded (yes, even "Challengers"). When Neko and Newman sing, "Valkyrie don't go home/ It's not right/ Not right/ Leave with the lights up," it hits you in the gut and forces an emotional response. The drums and guitars are relegated to simple background duties, but Kurt Dahle absolutely nails the percussion here! When it comes in, it's just enough to heighten the song to another level. Amazing stuff, really.

A friend of mine commented on Facebook that Together is the best album the band has made since Twin Cinema. That's just a fancy way of saying that it's better than Challengers. Still, I'm compelled to agree with him on this one. Together is the New Pornographers album that all of us wanted after Twin Cinema. It is far more focused than its predecessor, presenting the listener with songs that aren't going to push any boundaries but still manage to excite. Some may be turned off by the band's insistence on sticking with the tried and true formula that has brought them such success, especially after Challengers' seemed to signal a slight change of direction. For what it's worth though, Together is a flat-out awesome album that rivals some of The New Pornographers' greatest work. Hearing it is like having an old friend write to tell you they're coming to visit. You're not entirely surprised by their arrival when they show up, but it's still nice to see them.

The everything including the kitchen sink band...

The New Pornographers are a fantastic super-group that create rousing pop songs, low key rock songs and sing along acoustic ditties (and that's just the first three songs!) Together takes the best parts of past albums Twin Cinema (my favorite) and Challengers and meshes them together in a seamless and joyous manner. The merry men and women who make up TNP take the listener into their kooky world of lust, laughs and melody.

Their leader AC Newman is a melody maker supreme, spinning together sing along after sing along. Neko Case is arguably the best female indie/pop artist of the last five years. Her last two solo albums were on many year end top ten lists (deservedly so.) Her voice is sweeter than butterscotch. Dan Bejar is the x factor in the band taking his songs to creative and unusual places.

My favorite songs: The rousing Up in the Dark; the Belle and Sebastian-like You Can't See My Mirror; and finally the sing along closer, We End Up Together (could be this record's Bleeding Heart Show.)

If you're into indie-rock, new wave, pop, rock (hell, if you're into good music), you owe it to yourself to check out the latest from The New Pornographers. If you're already a fan, then I'm preaching to the choir... come to church and enjoy some good clean porn.

Makes me happy

Woke in bad mood. Bought NP "Together" - I've been holding off for a day when I needed a lift. Now smiling. Works every time. For a few years I told people this was my favorite band. Not sure that's true anymore, but then these guys moved to a separate category long ago. Can't compare them to anyone else. New Porns and A.C.Newman's solo stuff simply make me happy. Even when my initial reaction is "not as good as..." I know most of the songs will go on a frequently played playlist. Is anything here as achingly beautiful as "Adventures in Solitude" or as kickass as "The Slow Descent" or "The Laws Have Changed" or "Twin Cinemas"? Nope. Do I care? Nope.

[update, July 21] I have had a complex relationship with this album. For a few weeks I have been telling friends it is my least favorite NP work. Then I saw them play most of the material in Oakland 3 days ago, and got a new level of understanding. Now ... is it my favorite? I dunno. Can't compare it to the earlier stuff or to anyone else in rock/pop. It's just a different and wonderful color to add to my listening palette. Listen to it LOUD!

The Lonely Island Blows Up

I've been a fan of The Lonely Island for a while, and it's exciting to see "the dudes" finally start getting recognition for their talents.

I originally thought this album was a joke when it was announced, but I'm very happy it's for real, because it's hilarious.

Musically, it's actually catchy and very solid. I'm sure some people will hear it and not even realize it's a joke at first. Once you pay attention to the lyrics though, it's just amazing.

I do feel that some of the effect is lost by not seeing the creative videos that were made for the songs (although those are included as well), but once you've seen the videos, you'll picture them as you hear the songs anyway.

If you've been a fan of the Saturday Night Live's Digital Shorts, The Lonely Island, or just Andy Samberg, I guarantee you'll enjoy this album.

Some Crucial Omissions Hold This Great Set Back

As a dedicated SNL watcher through the good and the bad, the Lonely Island guys got my attention - and the attention of a lot of other people - with "Lazy Sunday" a Beastie Boys-esque rap video about two guys going to go see The Lion, The Witch, & The Wardrobe on a Sunday morning. Billed as a "Digital Short," the song became an internet sensation, made Samberg and his writing partners people to watch, and put SNL back in the headlines while spawning a number of imitators.

In the following years, the "Digital Shorts" have become a staple of the show, and sometimes, its high points. But the ones that work the best are the Lonely Island-produced music videos - "D*** in a Box" featuring Justin Timberlake, "I Ran (So Far)," featuring Adam Levine (with a pretty great cameo from Jake Gyllenhaal). So when word hit that The Lonely Island were releasing a CD, it seemed like a no-brainer.

And as an album, it's pretty good. The songs for the most part don't outstay their welcome, and the talent assembled is impressive - Norah Jones, T-Pain, and Natalie Portman (!!) show up on the album's best tracks. The songs recycled from the show are worth an extra listen - without the audience response and the visual, the listener can really sit back and appreciate how musically deft these songs are. Also included is a DVD of some of the videos - a nice companion, and great for the completionist SNL fan.

Unfortunately, there are a few omissions from the show that are really unfortunate. "I Ran" - in my opinion, one of the subtler, smarter, and funnier songs TLI has put together - is nowhere to be found, in either song or video form. Likewise, the T-Pain starring "I'm on a Boat" video - which was aired on the show as a promo for the album - is completely absent as well. That's one of the songs that really needs the visuals to work, as the whole concept behind it springs from music videos featuring rap stars on yachts. The song by itself is great, but loses something without its visual representation, and it's a shame that the video didn't make it on.

As is, this is a great disc, and well worth the price, especially when you consider the DVD. But those omissions keep the set from being truly incredible.

One of the best albums of the year!

Here's the thing about The Lonely Island dudes...they actually make really good music that could stand on it's own, but the comedy they add to it just takes this album to a whole new level! About half the album is new material that we haven't either seen on SNL or their website, and it's all genius! Highlights for me (of the new material) includes "Like a Boss," the title track "Incredibad," and "Punch You in the Jeans."

I do want to throw a warning out there though...listen to this in the car at your own risk! Driving back from the store after purchasing this I almost crashed I was laughing so hard!

The Amy Winehouse comparisons are as misleading as they are predictable.

There's no disputing the gifts of Tottenham-born Adele Adkins, the latest BRIT graduate to stroll into the charts. As we know from her single Chasing Pavements, she has a sensational voice: rich, robust, voluptuously bluesy.

Is she the new Amy Winehouse?

It is not quite right.

True, both are white girls who owe a debt to black soul, both sing with a London twang ("I don't get nuffin' back," rasps Adele on the punchy "Tired"), and both are in pieces because their man done them wrong.

Eleven of the 12 songs on Adele's debut are about heartbreak (the other, "Hometown Glory", is about how cool London is).

Adele, though, is easier to listen to than Winehouse. Her music is cleaner, less menacing: there's the bright acoustic-guitar chime of "Daydreamer", the lullaby twinkle of "First Love", the plush strings of "Melt My Heart to Stone".

Her mesmerising singing tone, honest lyrics, jazz and soul influences, and brash Cockney speaking accent, echo Amy. But Adele's delivery is far more delicate.

Lyrically she's simpler, too, occasionally even soppy: "When there's no one there to dry your tears, I could hold you for a million years," she gushes on "Make You Feel My Love".

Where Back to Black sounded emotionally and musically true, almost everything on the covers-all-bases "19" sounds like it was absorbed by osmosis at the London's BRIT School for Performing Arts (where she, Katie Melua, Leona Lewis, Kate Nash and Winehouse are alumni).

Some will find Adele rigidly old-fashioned. Her influences (Etta James, Dusty Springfield, Billie Holiday) are from another age.

A cursory listen may lead you to conclude that Adele has a voice way in excess of her years. In terms of technical ability, that's true.

The instrumentation seems designed to usher you to that conclusion: a dash of jazz bass, the odd string arrangement that seems to take its cue from Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy".

"Sumptuous one moment then fragile the next, this is an album dripping with beauty and class.

Adele's voice caresses and inspires, and is superbly supplemented by piano, guitar and glorious orchestration".(Lee Davis)

All that we can say is that she sings with unabashed passion about a kind of pain we can all recognise, and that sort of thing doesn't date.

Adele is a breath of fresh air.

I found Adele about year ago on Myspace. I was instantly taken with the single Best for Last. I searched online for the CD because I had to here more from the person who posessed this voice I can only describe as "chunky butter"; unexpected and smooth. I absolutely couldn't find her anywhere not even in the record stores. I waited patiently because I knew she would not get away in the age when her type of music is such a breath of fresh air. I've had the CD in my hands for 3 days now and it's been all I expected. I can't stop listening to it. I still enjoy Best for Last but I seem to repeat Chasing Pavement, Make You Feel My Love which was one of my faves from Garth Brooks. But, I'd have to say Melt My Heart to Stone and Right as Rain are my favorites and touch me personally. I haven't listened to a CD this much since Corrine Bailey Rae. I didn't think to compare Adele to Amy Winehouse until I read a comment here. Although I understand the comparison there is something in Adele's voice that is so well rounded. Her voice reminds me of Sunday afternoon; patient, comfortable, strong but peaceful and not tormented. Her voice makes you want to play her in the background when you're entertaining friends or someone special for the evening. It's nice to see there are at least 12 songs in this world that maintain class, heart and beauty. I can't wait to hear more from Adele.

Angelic

Adele's voice is fantastic and emotive. She blends British acoustic with blues and soul like Lauryn Hill(unplugged) meets Tracy Thorn and Etta James.

This is the only album I have listened to for the past month. My favorites are (soulful) Melt My Heart to Stone, (folk/country) Crazy for You, (blues vocal) First Love and (motown-ish) Right as Rain.

Her style is NOT the Amy Winehouse raspy attitude type of voice. Adele's niche is with her guitar and her voice.

I can't get enough.

Backed by drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and pianist Leo Genovese - and inspired by the classical training of her younger years - Esperanza creates a modern chamber music group that combines the spontaneity and intrigue of improvisation with sweet and angular string trio arrangements. The result is a sound that weaves the innovative elements of jazz, folk and world music into the enduring foundations of classical music.

"So much of my early musical experience was spent playing chamber music on the violin, and it's a form of music that I've always loved," says Esperanza. "I was very inspired by a lot of classical music, and chamber music in particular. I'm intrigued by the concept of intimate works that can be played and experienced among friends in an intimate setting. So I decided to create my version of contemporary chamber music, and add one more voice to that rich history."

Chamber Music Society is a place where connoisseurs of classical music and jazz devotees - and fans of other musics as well - can find common ground. The recording offers a chamber music for modern times - one that brings together people of different perspectives and broadens their cultural experience, just as it did in an earlier age.

Esperanza first took the world by storm in 2008 with her self-titled debut recording that spent more than 70 weeks on the Billboard Contemporary Jazz Chart. Two years later, she continues to push the boundaries of jazz and explore the places where it intersects with other genres. Co-produced by Esperanza and Gil Goldstein, Chamber Music Society surrounds Esperanza with a diverse assembly of musicians. At the core are pianist Leo Genovese, drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and percussionist Quintino Cinalli. The string trio is comprised of violinist Entcho Todorov, violist Lois Martin, cellist David Eggar and Gretchen Parlato on voice. The great Milton Nascimento also makes a guest appearance on one track.

This is the work of a brilliant young musical talent who isn't afraid to challenge the limits of jazz and its relationship to other forms of musical expression. Chamber Music Society is the first of two current Esperanza projects. Radio Music Society, set for release in the spring of 2011, features an exciting new repertoire of funk, hip-hop, and rock elements fused into songs that are free from genre. "I'm confident that this music will touch people," she says of Chamber Music Society. "We all want to hear sincerity and originality in music, and anyone can recognize and appreciate when love and truth are transmitted through art. No matter what else has or hasn't been achieved on this recording, those things are definitely a part of this music. Those are the things I really want to deliver."

Music for the Intellect

Esperanza Spaulding shot off like a rocket with her eponymous debut album in 2008. Yet, for as impressive a young jazz artist as she is, the program there seemed a bit unfocussed. Where was she going to take her unique and most promising talent?

I surmised from the first album that she would probably end up in a "post bop-fusion" mode, exploring and taking off from the early '70's works of such artists as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Joe Zawinul and Miles Davis. The live concert of Ms. Spaulding on PBS' "Austin City Limits" seemed to confirm this direction.

But like Miles Davis, Esperanza Spaulding is much too creative and headstrong a musician ever to be pigeonholed; rather, she appears to be one to lead rather than to follow. And this perception is confirmed by this stunning second c.d.

I have listened to it over and over, and not only am I not tired of it, I find myself picking up something new with each listen. Immediately, I'm captivated by the charming duet with another young vocal lioness, Gretchen Parlato, on track 10, Jobim's "Intuil Paisagem." (Incidentally, one of the few non-originals. Really, the only standard is "Wild Is the Wind," track 5, but even it doesn't sound like what you may be used to at all). Likewise, the duet with the immortal Milton Nasciemento, "Apple Blossom," track 6, is captivating.

But the ouerve of this disc is chamber music, really, and the recording belongs more than anything to the combo of Ms. Spaulding's bass, David Eggar's cello, Entho Todorov's violin and Lois Martin's viola. Jazz and string quartets? It absolutely works here. Kudos to executive producer, Gil Goldstein, one of the best in the business, as well of course to co-producer Esperanza.

And Leo Genovese likewise does amazing work on piano. Check out his solo on track 9, "Winter Sun," for example.

I predict a Grammy nomination for this c.d. Granted, the Grammies in jazz (aka the "Shammies") are generally reserved for talent who has made it. But Esperanza Spaulding has already received an hellacious amount of recognition for such a young artist. She richly deserves it, and would deserve the nomination.

I call this "Music for the Intellect," or "Music for the Head." It won't make it on American Bandstand; you won't give it a 95, because you can't really dance to it. But this disc is one of the most intelligent, intellectually challenging recordings I have heard in a long time. Very highly recommended. RC

p.s. - 1/2/11 - This was the only vocal jazz disc of 2010 to make it into Jazz Times' top 40 c.d.'s. (#34) I would have predicted that, in terms of it being #1. Esperanza Spaulding was also nominated as the top new artist. However, the c.d. was not nominated for a Grammy in the vocal jazz category. Can't get 'em all correct....RC

FANTASTICALLY BEAUTIFUL!!!!

I love all of Esperanza's CDs and what I loved about some of the songs on the previous works were some were so simple and whisical and just wonderful.

What I love about Chamber Music Society is that is anything but simple. Every airspace has music and sound (if that makes sense). Its beautiful and rich and interesting and it envelopes you. The Chamber Music idea was so original! HOW do you add jazz elements to something as boring as chamber music and make it something I cant stop listening to!?!?

Its soooo UNIQUE and INNOVATIVE! And I see her growth in this CD. Its amazing to me.

Because I was introduced to her 3 years ago, I now listen to Jazz music new and old. And work like this is what makes Jazz the best music genre to me. I hope the world takes notice! BRAVO!

A Fantastic Album

This is a great album.

As much as I enjoyed "Esperanza"--her second album--I must say that "Chamber Music Society" is a definitive leap forward. Her voice texture is richer, her compositions/arrangements are beyond impressive, and her musicianship is inspiring. Two thumbs up!

Thoughtful, Soulful, Cool-as-Cucumber

Letting Ray LaMontagne transport you has never been easier, and new LP "God Willin' & the Creek Don't Rise" is the reason why. His fourth album release - and the first to have him billed in a band context with the excellent Pariah Dogs - sounds rich, organic and sincere.

From the first song to the last the album sounds like the kind of live concert one might stumble upon during a night of bar hopping and count himself especially lucky for having chanced upon.

Things are a little changed this time around. The band is front and center in its support of LaMontagne, justifying their co-billing. Furthermore, he has taken over the production helm from Ethan Johns, taking more control over the final product. The result is sonic textures even more mellowed and marinated than before, allowing the songs maximum ability to catch hold and wield an impression upon the listener.

Even if LaMontagne hits upon a cliched phrases or idea here and there ("New York City's Bringing Me Down") it does not detract.

In fact, his directness and lack of pretense result in his themes - among them heartbreak ("This Love Is Over"), self-preservation ("Repo Man") and breaking free from convention (the husky, awesome "Beg Steal or Borrow") - coming off with ease and precisely-chiseled grace. This results in a set of a songs that are arresting at first listen.

A particular highlight is the sublime, catchy, profoundly beautiful "Old Before Your Time," which has such melodic panache it recalls heyday Elton John and Don McLean. It acknowledges the bittersweet reality of the examined life yet remains optimistic and soothing, one of LaMontagne's specialties. The same can be said of "For the Summer," which features awesome instrumental breaks.

LaMontagne has grown remarkably for an artist only on his fourth studio record. "God Willin' & the Creek Don't Rise" is sure to please fans and earn many converts.

The Best Yet

With the exception of "Live from Bonnaroo" I own every album Ray has out, including "Introducing Raycharles LaMontagne", (1999) "Acre of Land",(2001) "Green",(2002) and "One Lonesome Saddle",(2002). In my opinion, this is the BEST album Ray has ever released. From the opening song, "Repo Man" through the closing of "Devil's In The Jukebox", you'll be tapping your toes and singing right along - whether it be on your ride to work, or that road trip you've been planning. It's worth mentioning Ray's husky, smoke and whiskey, voice isn't as present on this album. Instead his voice rings clear and bright on the majority of the tracks.

I heartily agree with the Associated Press in saying God Willing And The Creek Don't Rise is, "one of the year's best!"

Hypnotic

A genuinely haunting and hypnotic journey. The lyrics tell stories perfectly matched to the unique voice and subtle instruments. Don't be fooled by the peaceful appearance - these are genuine stories of loss, desire and heartbreak. The interplay of the steel guitar is the unifying thread throughout. Maybe not the genius of "Nashville Skyline", but reminiscent. A highly recommended interlude. Don't cheat yourself by trying to pick individual songs - buy the whole disc.

Designed as a multi-purpose stadium, Shea first met rock 'n' roll when The Beatles appeared there August 15, 1965, establishing Shea as the premier stadium for the world's greatest bands. The Who, The Police, The Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen and The Clash all played Shea. The Last Play At Shea, staged on July 16 and July 18, 2008 before a combined 110,000 fans, comprised the final performances ever at the historic stadium. Live At Shea Stadium contains two and a half hours of hits and album favorites, featuring special guests Paul McCartney, Tony Bennett, Garth Brooks, John Mayer, John Mellencamp, Steven Tyler and Roger Daltrey. Live At Shea Stadium captures the music and memories of a generation. After 45 years, the Mets' two World Series victories, The Beatles and The Last Play At Shea, the final section of Shea Stadium was torn down in 2009.

Super Solid Track

Trust me when I say that I have been following this artist since his very humble acoustic beginnings. As much as I am a fan of his first record 'Awake', I love how John has kept on evolving over the last two records; constantly searching for new sounds, harmonies, and feelings to infuse into his music. In this way, he has kept his musical identity fresh and interesting. I think a lot of critics have a tendency to, prematurely, judge the newer stuff before they have had an honest days' listen.

A huge thing I also listen for in music is its spirit or its essence. A lot of the pop music today seems to have lost this with the exception of artists like Katy Perry and Taylor Swift. So much of the music out there that sells on itunes sounds the same to me. The musical creativity is sub-par and is just formulaic. Its over-produced, auto-tuned, and artificially enhanced with very little emphasis on the message behind the music. It feels like people are easily amused and need a quick sonic fix.

One last point- As much as I love listening to Phoenix and my Mutemath records, I also have to have my cup of tea with some Stevie Wonder or John Coltrane. Meaning, I love to take my time with the whole music listening experience. That is why I believe 'You and I' is a gem. You can just sit back, turn on the track and let it take you to new heights. I also, strongly, believe that it has got the same raw energy that John captured in his earlier songs such as 'Broken' and 'Take Me With You' . Cheers to this mofo for keeping it grounded and sticking to his true spirit!

A premier indie love song, "No One's Gonna Love You" tries to make you think otherwise in the title, but make no mistake about it, this is one of the better written and produced love songs I've heard, and I've either heard it as the background for emotional moments on either Psych or Chuck, so a few others must have felt the same as I.

The full line would be "No one's gonna love you more than I do." It comes off so nicely, it completes just about emotional moment. Add to that the music, and you've got the complete package with this song. Buy it for a date, or to tell that special someone how they feel. Surely enough, you'll score many a point, and they'll get the message. Perfect for Valentine's Day mixtapes.

R.E.M. Gets Their Ballad On

I haven't cared for much of R.E.M.'s recent work, so I almost didn't download this track. To me, R.E.M is generally less than successful when they go for atmospheric music (the exception being E BOW THE LETTER)and more successful with their pop tracks. Oh My Heart is fairly forgettable on the first listen. One the second and third it really starts to charm. Once I set aside my expectations for an R.E.M. track and just thought about how I feel when I listen to it, I really liked Oh My Heart. It's a Sunday morning song, something R.E.M. isn't always successful with. I'm interested in hearing more from the album.

Great song. It certainly has the REM sound, but also reflects where they are as a band now. Glad one of my favorite bands that I grew up with is back and still making good music.

sounds pretty good, but...

This is a nice enough song from the forthcoming new R.E.M. album. I like the instrumentation, especially the horns. I really wish i could be more enthusiastic about this, but it sadly reconfirms my feeling about this band in the past decade. They used to be in my top five favorite bands ever, and I've seen them live multiple times, going all the way back to a small college gymnasium in 1985. My problem with 21st Century R.E.M. is that all of the new material sounds SO unoriginal, so much like a retread of their previous songs. "Oh My Heart" is yet another disappointing example of this situation. I can muster only the slightest excitement upon hearing this "new" music. If you can get more excited, good for you. I envy you.

At least now I know how I got it...

Thanks to the reviewer who mentioned this was a free download when you install the amazon software... I was trying to figure out why I had purchased this since I have no recollection of doing so, or ever heard of the artist..

Very generic song, no redeeming qualities for me... Sounds like just about everything else out there...

Here comes junior

Wow, does Liam Finn ever sound like his dad. I wonder if that's how his voice comes out naturally or if he adopted it from hearing so much Crowded House while growing up.

Regardless, this is a not bad track. It is simplistic, but strong and over before you know it. It's inevitable to compare him to father Neil, so I'll just go ahead and do it: he doesn't quite have the John Lennon touch of dear old dad, but I say who cares. He's still pretty young, so there is room for improvement.

That said, I'm still curious to check out the EP from which this song comes. Let's hear it for free mp3s from Amazon.

Beatles-like with A Dash of 10,000 Maniacs

Nice moderate tempo song with light, pleasing harmony. Lead singer actually sounds like Julian Lennon. Lead guitar has slightly distorted sound and evokes memories of the late Rob Buck of 10,000 Maniacs. Recommended addition to your Easy Rock/Alternative library.

Lacks Rock Product

Now 37 consists of a large amount of pop and hip hop hits as all of the "Now" albums have. This one however leaves out all rock product.

The last 5 Now albums, released by EMI also cut you short on at least 5 hits by replacing them with "Now What's Next" featuring unknown songs by unknown artists.

Let's hope Now 38 is better.

A good compilation - but just 16 chart toppers and 4 NOW What's Next Bonus Tracks'

This NOW 37 album is a good compilation of popular current music.

So far, every album in the NOW series has reached the Billboard Top 10. NOW 37 should achieve similar Billboard success.

'Love the Way You Lie' is Eminem's 4th Billboard Hot 100 and Rihanna's 7th! This NOW 37 compilation also features another #1 hit by Rihanna - 'Only Girl (In The World)'. This track is from 'Loud' - her 5th studio album.

Overall though, my favorite NOW 37 track is Katy Perry's 'Firework'. It has a catchy beat with lyrics that makes the listener feel good - all the ingredients for the making of an evergreen! To date, 'Firework' has reached number one in the US, Canada and New Zealand. It peaked at number three in the UK.

'We R Who We R' by Ke$ha is a dance-pop song with a message. Kesha was inspired to write the song in the wake of news that bullying had led to multiple suicides of gay youth.

It is often voiced that today's music is devoid of quality lyrics. Katy Perry and Ke$ha have shown otherwise, with great song lyrics and catchy beats.

Taylor Swift, P!nk, Bruno Mars, Chris Brown and T-Pain have all been featured on previous NOW albums. The NOW That's What I Call Music! series gives me the opportunity to collect all the popular hits by these artistes.

In my review for Now 36, I said:

"Enough of the experimenting 'NOW' editors! Just listen to what we the 'NOW' buyers are saying!

You found the winning formula a long time ago ... on the 'NOW' 1 to 32 albums! It's that simple! Revert to the old format - a compilation of 20 chart toppers defining today's music ... not the music of tomorrow or yesterday!"

I (still) believe that these four 'future hits' should not be part of the NOW compilation. Bonus tracks featuring upcoming artistes can be made available as a free download on the NOW website.

Although the 16 tracks on NOW 37 is a snapshot of what is current, I gave the album THREE STARS because the present format cheats us of 4 tracks that WE WANT TO LISTEN TO!

Buy NOW 37 at $7.99. This is a fair price for only 16 chart toppers!

RECOMMENDED: NOW That's What I Call Love

Now continues to roll out the great music!!

Another great collection with Now 37. There isn't one bad song in the bunch. I give the CD 5 stars but my CD case came broken so that gets a 1 star. I would think Amazon would do a better job of packaging their CDs. The case was in horrible shape. The CD does seem to be ok but too bad I will have to find another case for Now 37.

Ricky's best CD since Vuelve

I am a huge Ricky Martin fan, so I expected to enjoy this CD. But I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of the material. There are beautiful ballads, dance tracks and songs with messages that Ricky really wants to convey. The first single (The Best Thing About Me is You) is not my favorite, but it is a nice re-introduction of Ricky to pop fans who haven't followed his recent efforts in Spanish. The other song with a Spanish and English version (Shine) is very catchy and more to my taste, but the real gems are the Spanish songs. Ricky's voice has matured and sounds fantastic. Desmond Child is clearly a master who understands how to present Ricky effectively. Give this CD a chance even if you don't remember much about Ricky. It really rivals his masterpiece, Vuelve. In fact, buy both of them and have a beautiful evening. This CD reminded me of everything that I love about Ricky.

Sing your life!

I own two Ricky Martin albums; his 1999 eponymous English debut, and his MTv Unplugged CD. "Musica + Aalma + Sexo" is his first release in 6 years, and while not wildly different musically from his earlier efforts, it does show how confident he has gotten with his singing.

There are a few Club-influenced electronic numbers; "Mas" (with disembodied chants reminscent of "The Cup Of Life"), the propulsive "Te Vas" (appearing again in English as "Shine"), and "Sera Sera" for example, while the guitar-driven Folk/Reggae lead-off single is available in Spanish ("Lo Mejor de Mi Vida Eres Tú" featuring Natalia Jimenez) and in English ("The Best Thing About Me Is You" featuring Joss Stone who doesn't steal the show from her duet partner for a change).

Other standouts are the midtempo synth-driven "No Te Miento" (with an organ/guitar intro), but it's in the ballads that Martin really shines. The lilting "Frio" (which appears again featuring Wisin and Yandel), the sweeping "Tu Y Yo", the absolutely gorgeous "Cantame Tu Vida" (with flamenco guitars - reminds me of his Madonna duet "Be Careful"), the theatrical "Te Busco Y Te Alcazo" (sung in English and Spanish), and the enchanting piano/guitar-driven "Basta Ya". "Cantame Tu Vida" translates to "Sing For Life" and he sure does. Great!

Nice comeback, Ricky!

I think this is a very good comeback album. Most of the songs are upbeat and you can tell this is a different Ricky. These 10 new tracks don't talk about love or interest towards women, instead, he keeps it neutral... which is something extremely intelligent to do considering everybody now knows he is gay. Most songs talks about being true to yourself, naturally, accepting others the way they are, of course, and enjoying life as much as you can. There is a little bit of electronic sounds in the album, but it still mostly pop and two or three ballads. My favorite songs are: "Más", "Te Vas", and "No Te Miento". I give the album 8/10. Thanks, Ricky, for another great album!
