There are many ways in which web developers can give their pages an easy boost in the search engines. The most essential come when you are building the page itself. Here are 5 on-site optimization factors every web developer should know:

Don't use JavaScript or Ajax. Javascript may look pretty awesome, but because search engines cannot see it, any keywords, content, or links will not be picked up. Google does allow a workaround, but it's tedious as best.
Pay attention to the title tags. The title tag is the most important element in on-site optimization. Each of the pages on your site should have a different focus, and they should also each have a different title tag featuring a different keyword. Otherwise, your pages are competing with each other in the search engines for the same keywords. Be careful, though – do not stuff your title tag with keywords. Stick to one or two important phrases.
Keep your site structure simple. Pages that are 3 or 4 directories deep on a website run the risk of not being crawled. The general rule is that the closer a page is to the root domain, the easier it will be for it to not only be crawled, but also to get domain authority benefits like PageRank. In other words, example.com/thing is better than example.com/category/subcategory/thing.
Make sure URLs are keyword-focused. Avoid dynamic URLS like example.com/?page=294. This offers nothing helpful to the search engine, whereas example.com/lawmowers.html gives search engines a valuable clue what the page is about. The URL is another opportunity to use an important keyword and improve your chances of ranking.
Keep the links on a page to under 100. According to Google, having a lot of links on your page can result in a poor user experience, and there's a possibility Google will then nofollow all these links. What's most important, however, is that PageRank will be divided amongst all the sites you're linking to, so your internal links to other pages on your site will pass less authority. Keeping these factors in mind will help give your sites an advantage from the start, making sure they're indexed quickly and begin working their way up the SERPs.

Samsung Galaxy Pro Announced; Is Mid-Range QWERTY Messenger

Samsung has just added a new member to their 'Galaxy' line-up – the Galaxy Pro. The Galaxy Pro is mid-range handset, sporting a 2.8-inch touchscreen with a QWERTY keyboard, in a bar shaped form a la E71.

The handset is powered by a 800MHz CPU and packs 512MB of RAM. It features a four-row QWERTY keyboard as well. The usual GPS with A-GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microSD card slot and a 3.5mm audio jack are also present.

The back of the phone sports a 3MP auto-focus camera. Sadly, there is no LED flash to aid night photography. The Pro will run on Android 2.2 with Samsung's TouchWIZ UI on top of it.

Other specs of the handset including its pricing remains a mystery, as Samsung did not mention anything. However, Three U.K. has already confirmed that the Galaxy Pro will be coming to their network soon!

The Galaxy Pro is aimed at competing with budget oriented handsets 'messengers' from Nokia and RIM.

Carriers depend on their ability to control what goes over their network, from blocking foreign smartphones to forcing consumers onto high-tier data plans in order to subsidize the cost of devices, but some of the recent details on embedding metric tracking software on Android devices, while isn’t completely new, is invasive and provides carriers with a whole slew of what should be considered personal information.

The Android Creative Syndicate have been poking around in recent Android installs that come pre-loaded on Samsung devices from Sprint and have found Carrier IQ — what is being describing as “highly invasive, to the level of being spyware“. Carrier IQ is legitimately billed for tracking metrics and a “provider of Mobile Service Intelligent Solutions to the Wireless Industry”. In short, the software consists of daemons, libraries and small applications that provide detailed information to Sprint about your smartphone usage. The ACS (Android Creative Syndicate) advise that Carrier IQ hooks into the contents of SMS and MMS messages, battery and signal status, XML files that are opened as well as every web page visited. It can read each number that is entered into the phone dialer, details about open applications and is even tied into all data sent and received from the device.

Lead ROM Developer, k0nane, has posted screen shots showing the interface for enabling and disabling select services for the "IQ Agent". He notes that all logging is disabled – which hides the activities from users. ACS reports after removing the major traces of Carrier IQ they have noticed a significant increase in battery life and HTC Evo 4G users who have disabled similar services report increased speed and overall usability.

With the slew of recent malware found in the Android Market might we soon see more users taking to rooting their devices, installing custom ROM images that remove such bundled "spyware" and provide increased security by patching known holes? Hopefully Google can implement some strict rules for carrier customization as well as a different model for third party application access control.

Microphone Volume Control Added To Sound Menu Of Ubuntu 11.04

Consistency across different applications is one of the main focus in Ubuntu 11.04. Ubuntu already has a unified sound menu from which users can manage the volume levels of different music players.

However, one thing that has always bugged me was the microphone volume control. Usually when a voice call arrives, say in Skype, users have to manually set the microphone volume level from the Sound Preferences.

This is all set to change in Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narhwal though. According to a Conor Curran of the Ubuntu Desktop Experience Team, the microphone volume control should be as easily accessible as the speaker volume control. This is very true because more and more people are starting to use VoIP calls.

To address this issue, Ubuntu 11.04 will include a microphone volume slider in the unified sound menu. Using the slider, users can control the volume of their microphones like they do with their speakers. The microphone volume works with popular applications like Skype and Mumble. However, unlike the speaker volume control, it will only be visible when there is a VoIP call.

The looks of the microphone volume slider has not been confirmed yet. However, it will have the same form as shown in the picture on the right – although icons and some details could change.

It goes without saying that a big chunk of platforming games depend on level design, ambiance and the variation of the enemies. Nifflas' Games eliminated that last dependency and upped the ante on the other two and have presented NightSky for PC gamers. Originally conceived as a WiiWare game during Game Developer Conference '09 as Night Game that never saw the light of the day, NightSky is a muted and atmospheric physics based puzzle-platformer that will have you admiring each level's silhouetted and dreamy denizens as you whizz past them.

You control a ball with some sort of life force. In some levels you can speed up the ball or invert the gravity as well. In some levels, you do not have any control over the ball (except braking). That is not all. Some levels allow you to control pinball flippers instead of the ball while others put the ball inside a "car", with the ball touching both the wheels of the 2D car. It is interesting to note that the game's physics are spot-on with the ball's spin and momentum being conserved and realistically damped. If you've catch and throw or any other game involving spherical objects, this game will be very easy for you to get into.

This is also attributed to the game's design. NightSky is made for casual play, preferably right before you sleep. The atmosphere is mellow and soft with an enchanting music track that suits the game's feel perfectly. Each level is beautiful and silhouetted against the waning sky ,with quirky creatures of the night looking curiously at you, the player. You will roll past dark caverns (not the scary kind, mind you), grassy meadows at dusk and mountainsides silhouetted against the dark blue twilight sky in the background. Everything in NightSky is designed to ease you into the splendor of slumber.

With eleven worlds (not including the very well designed "credits" world), NightSky will keep you entranced for quite a while, as the difficulty scales up well in the later stages. An easy game to play, NightSky is a welcome break from the hair-loss-inducing VVVVVV and Super Meat Boy.

Last.fm Is Not Dying, and Here’s Why

Last.fm is an interesting company. It started off as two different projects – one involving online radio, and one involving recommendations. It was born as the internet was beginning to recover from the dot-com bubble burst. While Last.fm might no longer be the coolest kid in the town, a lot of people, including me, still have a soft spot for it. Naturally, when I first noticed the title of Stefan's TNW editorial – "How long is Last.fm gonna last?", I was outraged. How dare he! But as I read his post and deliberated on the issue, I could see why he had arrived at the conclusion that Last.fm is heading towards oblivion.

I may not have been the earliest adopter of Last.fm, but I had joined it at a time when it was still considered hip and fun. Besides MySpace, Last.fm was the go to website for music lovers. It had the neat ability to generate charts based on what I had been listening to. Of course, those charts weren't generated in real-time, because back then almost nothing on the web was real-time. I would check last.fm multiple times at the beginning of a week to see if the charts had been updated. I had friends, who would do the same. We would spend hours every week comparing each other's tastes, checking out Last.fm suggestions, browsing through the most popular artists, etcetera etcetera. In short, I loved Last.fm.

Then in 2007, Last.fm got acquired by CBS (and I went to college). As always, the news was treated with cautious optimism. While CBS had the money and influence to expand Last.fm's reach, it could also potentially spell trouble for the website by taking away its trendiness.

Next year, Last.fm rolled out a design overhaul that added several new features, and made dozens of modifications. Although a certain (vocal) section of Last.fm's dedicated user base didn't like the changes, my impressions were mostly positive. It allayed my fears about stagnation at the hands of a large corporation.

Unfortunately, since then, it has been mostly one negative news after another. Last.fm stopped providing free streams to everyone other than users based in US, UK and Germany. It allegedly leaked user data to RIAA. The founders left the company. It stopped providing free preview streams for a large percentage of the tracks. And last month, it stopped its free mobile service even in countries like UK, US and Germany.

Being a web based content-provider in the music industry is tough. The record labels are still mostly clueless about the web as a content distribution medium. I would have to admit that most of the stuff I mentioned above were things beyond Last.fm's control. However, that doesn't change the fact that they happened, and that they had an overall negative impact on the product's quality and value. In the meantime, Spotify has come along, and conquered Western Europe. Grooveshark has won accolades by offering high quality music for free to everyone.

To make things worse, Last.fm as a product has stagnated. There has been very little in the way of new features over the past few years. The charting and recommendation engines are the differentiating factors for Last.fm. However, they have seen little in the way of improvements in the last four years. Tight integration of charts with profiles and communities has the potential to make Last.fm an attractive destination for music lovers. But the once coolest kid in the block seems to have lost all its creative energy.

So, are Last.fm's days numbered? I don't think so. Although I agree with Stefan's overall assessment of Last.fm, I believe that Last.fm is still quite far from heading towards oblivion. It might have lost its chance to become the king of online radio; however, its core product is as appealing as it was five years back. Last.fm might no longer be chic, but it still is useful. Even switching to a premium model didn't make users stop coming back, because Last.fm is a lot more than just an online radio. The thing that makes users coming back to Last.fm is Audioscrobbler, which works from pretty much any music player, and any device.

While I don't believe that Last.fm is not going to go anywhere anytime soon, I would love to see Last.fm regain its edge. It needs to reorient its website and applications to make them an integral part of a music enthusiast's life, instead of just being a website you visit a few times a week. Last.fm has to increase user engagement, and one way to do so is to completely revamp user pages. The shoutbox is currently relegated to the bottom of the page where it is mostly ignored by users. If last.fm wants to increase the amount of time users spend on their website, it has to find a way to make users interact with their friends more. The homepage has to do more than just displaying what my friends are listening to now. It needs to implement a site-wide playlist to encourage users to listen to music without using the desktop client. The mobile apps should encourage users to shout out their opinion. Last.fm should also try out of the box revenue generation mechanisms like allowing users to purchase and dedicate songs to loved ones. I don't want to see Last.fm turning into a Facebook, but it needs to leverage the huge pile of data it is sitting upon better.

Steam Guard by Valve–Friendly DRM or More Intel Love?

It has been a few days since Valve officially opened the valve on the new kind of identity management service for its digital distribution platform Steam. Named, very creatively, "Steam Guard", the service will allow users to "lock" their Steam identity semi-permanently to their main computer. More precisely, the gamers can lock their Steam ID to their Intel processors (the second generation kind with the "Core" brand name with Sandy Bridge et al).

This kind of two factor authentication system is akin to what Google has recently given to its users, and what the RSA keys have been to corporates with Enterprise Resource Planning servers and other systems. The Core CPUs will soon be updated with the Identity Protection Technology (IPT) that generates a key every 30 seconds according to some preordained algorithm. Once the Steam account is synced to this processor, it will not be available for use anywhere else. Valve's CEO Gabe Newell was so confident about this new tech that he freely gave away his username and password for people to try (and fail) at "hacking" his account.

However, this piece of technology is teetering towards the locked down EA-DRM kind of protection. While Steam does not allow for two computers to simultaneously login to the same account, anyone can download as many games as they want on any number of systems from the same account, go offline on their Steam client and play for as long as they want. If this kind of protection eventually becomes mandatory for systems running the Core CPUs, how many PCs can you authenticate? Will this create a problem for the folks on AMD machines and older Intel processors? (Agreed – very feeble questions, but questions nevertheless!)

The jury is still out on the electronic cigarette, or e-cig. While many users swear by them, the electronic gadgets are getting a wary eye from the FDA as an untested new drug. It's easy enough to see both sides of the equation, but that doesn't mean we aren't fascinated with the e-cigs based purely on their technological standpoint. We, as a society, are officially gadget addicts, but hey – that's better than smoking addicts, right?

E-Cigs and Legal Limbo

The electronic cigarette is a much simpler version of a real cigarette, helped along with a bit of battery. The e-cig looks just like a traditional cigarette with a slender, white body and brown filter. Inside the body of the e-cig, however, you'll find a container of liquid nicotine and a battery. When you puff on the e-cig, the battery heats up the liquid nicotine which makes a bit of theatrical smoke, along with a small amount of propylene glycol.

The e-cigs deliver nicotine to the body without tar or cancer causing agents, or at least these are the claims of the companies selling the e-cigs in the United States. The FDA tried to stop the importation of the e-cigs and did for awhile calling them an untested drug, but then the federal courts ruled that the e-cigarettes aren't sold for therapeutic uses, which leaves them out of the jurisdiction of the FDA. It's a rather strong case of legal limbo, but meanwhile the American people can't seem to get enough of the electronic cigarettes. Move over iPad, the e-cig may be our new gadget of choice.

The Gadget Appeal of E-Cigs

It's such a simple gadget compared to the more complex computer-chip driven devices of the day, but as small gadgets go, this one is catching on with lightning speed. Suddenly you're allowed to "smoke" where you weren't before. The e-cig doesn't produce real smoke and you may even be allowed to "smoke" it on a plane. Imagine the joy of delivering pure nicotine to your system while playing Angry Birds at 20,000 feet. Heavenly.

Since it's considered healthier than traditional cigarettes, many who might otherwise try cigarettes are giving the e-cig a try. It provides the oral fixation many smokers or would-be smokers crave while also delivering nicotine in a simple, if theatrical way. The smoke from the e-cig is cool in the same way it's cool to put water on dry ice. We, as a collective society, obviously dig the fake vapor.

E-Cigs: Effective or Worthless?

There are some who might call the e-cigs a clever new toy for the masses to play with. They are marketed as recreational items in a sense, much like tobacco normally would be. While others might call the e-cigs are great new gadget for helping smokers stop, they would meet resistance from the government who claims the e-cig isn't therapeutic, and if it were deemed to be therapeutic, the FDA would jump all over the shipments of e-cigs again in a heartbeat. As it is they are waiting on the perimeter looking for a chance to edge back into the fight.

As a somewhat confusing gadget used for "purely recreational" purposes, but that might also help you stop smoking as purely a byproduct, it is reasonably safe to say that e-cigarettes are an effective gizmo on many levels. And the fake smoke is cool, too.

Earlier in the week, a Redditor uncovered a large network of malwares masquerading as popular apps in the Android Market, when he stumbled upon one of the apps and noticed its incorrect publisher info. Android Police has a lowdown on the incident, which once again demonstrated how easy it is to infiltrate the Android Market. The fake apps, once downloaded, proceeded to root the phone using the famous “rageagainstthecage” exploit, and called home. It also had the potential to download additional payloads.

For its part, Google reacted swiftly, and pulled the apps minutes after being notified by Android Police. However, according to information provided by “lompolo”, the Redditor who uncovered this entire mess, some of the app developers were already aware of this for as long as a week, but their complaints fell on deaf ears. The apps injected with malware, which were dubbed as DroidDream by Lookout, only affected handsets running versions older than Android 2.2.2. Google found DroidDream in 58 applications, which were downloaded onto 260,000 devices.

Google believes that the apps only uploaded device information (IMEI/IMSI, unique codes which are used to identify mobile devices, and the version of Android running on your device), and not user-data. After pulling the apps, and performing its initial investigation, Google is now moving to rectify the damage caused. It is in the process of removing the apps from all handsets by employing the remote kill-switch built into Android. It is also pushing through a new update called “Android Market Security Tool March 2011″ to affected devices. This update will undo the changes made by DroidDream. If you were among the affected users, expect an email from Google soon.

This entire saga raises several questions. Obviously, as Android’s popularity continues to surge, more and more hackers and malware writers will target it. Unfortunately, it’s clear that Google is simply in no position to mitigate these attacks before they occur. The “openness” of the Market is becoming Android’s biggest security weakness. Although most Android users have nothing but disdain for any app review system, I would welcome a change in the Market policy, whereby all submitted apps are screened for signs of malicious or fraudulent activities. Google might also need to give a serious thought to how it deploys security updates. Apple and Microsoft have full control over deploying critical system updates, unlike Google, which is at the mercy of handset manufacturers and carriers. Although the bug that was exploited by DroidDream was fixed in Android 2.2.2, hundreds of thousands of handsets were successfully compromised because Android 2.2.2 isn’t yet available for a substantial number of handsets. Unless Google can reign in the fragmentation problem, it might have to start deploying hotfixes for different versions of Android to patch critical security vulnerabilities, i.e. employ a Windows like model of distributing patches to different OS versions. Rovio Announces Angry Birds for Facebook with New Gameplay

Zynga better watch out! After conquering the iOS App Store and Android Market (as well as Nokia’s Ovi Store and Palm’s App Catalog), Rovio has set its sights on Facebook.

Rovio Mobile is being fairly tight-lipped about the game. “There will be completely new aspects to it that just haven’t been experienced in any other platform", teased Rovio’s CEO Mikael Hed. It will obviously tap into Facebook’s social features to broaden its appeal. In the past Zynga has very smartly encouraged users to invite their friends, and compete with them (directly or indirectly) to increase its viral factor. Rovio has also hinted that Angry Birds for Facebook will, for the first time, see the pigs in a much more prominent role.

Although Angry Birds is expected to land in Facebook soon, Rovio has confirmed that we won’t be seeing it before April.

Besides Angry Birds for Facebook, Rovio is working on numerous other Angry Birds related projects. A movie and its tie-up game are already under development. Late last year, I spotted a deal that I couldn't turn down. I was able to buy a Sandisk Sansa Fuze 4G player for about $30 USD. When these were first released in 2008, they were over double that price. I already had an iPod Nano, but I wanted video and photos, and the price of the iPod Touch was over my playtime budget.

If you aren't familiar with the Fuze, here's some info from Google Products:

In the past few months, I've enjoyed using it at work and play, but there are two things that I definitely don't like about the Fuze. First, they used a proprietary connector, instead of using a mini-USB. Secondly, they force you to convert all your videos to a weird AVI format, which can only be created by their special Sansa Media Converter (Windows only).

There isn't much that I could do about the connector, but I've finally found an excellent alternative to the Sansa converter, called Video4Fuze. It is supported in Windows, Linux and Mac OSX, unlike Sansa's lame converter. Now converting full length DVDs for use on my Fuze is as simple as creating an AVI file, then converting it with Video4Fuze. If you are a big fan of downloading Youtube video, the Video4Fuze utility also converts FLV and MP4 videos with no problem.

MS Money is Dead but Money Sunset is Free

I wasn't paying attention last year, when it was announced that "Money Goes Bust". Over the years, I have used Microsoft's home budgeting software several times and I know people that are still using it.

On June 10th of 2009, Microsoft announced that it would discontinue Microsoft Money. That was a problem for several people then, and it continues to be a problem now. If you have an old copy of MS Money, it won't install properly because it requires an online activation that is no longer supported.

One of my friends, Joanne, recently contacted me and said that she was having trouble installing something called Money Plus Sunset Deluxe. She was getting an error about "corrupt autorun.inf", and the install was failing. I found the solution to that autorun problem, but I was curious about this new version of MS Money.

This "Sunset" version is free, and according to Microsoft,

"Money Plus Sunset Deluxe is designed to be a replacement for expired versions of Money Plus Essentials, Money Plus Deluxe, and Money Plus Premium versions".

For those currently using MS Money, don't panic. If you need to re-install MS Money for some reason, you can use the Sunset edition instead. There are also several alternatives to MS Money that can import your Money backup files. I recommend Mint.com if your budgeting isn't too complicated.

I decided to give Money Plus Sunset Deluxe a try. It's only a 34mb download, and the installation is pretty simple. Below you can see screenshots as it installed on my machine.

Twitter Joins Forces With Apple’s Ping, Discover More Music

When iTunes 10 was introduced, it brought about a new feature with it called Ping. Ping is a social networking service from Apple to allow users to share music tastes and connect with musicians and people alike.

When Ping launched initially, it did so with Facebook integration. However, the Facebook integration was taken out within a few days thanks to Apple and Facebook not reaching a deal and Facebook blocking Ping from accessing their API.

Today Twitter has stepped in to fill the void by announcing a new deal with Ping where users can share their ping activity, song previews and music download links on Twitter. As you can see from the screenshot above, sharing a link to the iTunes store will automatically display the product details beneath it, along with other Twitter activities.

If you use Ping, you can now connect your Twitter account to it and instantly find Ping users among the people you follow on Twitter. Once you have linked your Twitter and Ping account, your Ping activity like liking a song, new reviews or a song purchase will automatically be tweeted to your followers. In addition to the links, users will also be able to preview the songs and purchase it from within Twitter itself.

Considering how popular iTunes Store is, this move between Ping and Twitter is a definite win-win for both. Alas, there is no official word on when Apple and Facebook will set aside their differences and come up with a deal. More at the Twitter Blog.

The RIAA made a record win over the world of piracy by bringing down the popular P2P service LimeWire. As per the terms of the lawsuit, LimeWire was to shut down its complete operations and abiding by that, it did issue a cease-and-desist notice this Wednesday. However, a new (independent) pirated version of the application that goes by the name of "LimeWire Pirate Edition" has surfaced over the Internet.

The RIAA should understand that LimeWire is a company that is powered by its users. They will use anything and everything that is thrown their way (for file-sharing) and as long as it is an application that does just that, no one cares if it is from LimeWire or not. File-sharers are not as answerable to the law as LimeWire is being a company. The RIAA has created an even bigger problem for itself by bringing down LimeWire since, had this void not been there, there would not have been a pirated version over which they can have no control whatsoever.

The RIAA has responded on this matter saying,

It’s critical that LimeWire complies with the court-ordered injunction. We are monitoring the situation closely.

That can mean a couple of things starting with issuing another lawsuit on LimeWire and pleasing some more recording label bosses to ordering LimeWire to take care of the matter. The RIAA has endless antics and following this event, we will see some more of it soon.

A few days ago, I was watching a TED talk by David McCandless where he said something that has moved me. His words were,

data is the new oil, data is the new soil.

Data is raw and unusable without proper management and handling. Google has stepped into this business with its service Google Refine 2.0.

Google Refine is a rebranding of the Freebase Gridworks service Google acquired as a part of the Metaweb acquisition. The service works with the data to provide it with easy and powerful tools to remove inconsistencies, transform data, using web-services with the data, and linking it to a database. As the Google open-source blog says, the service can work wonders with messy data.

Google Refine 2.0 will serve an excellent back-end for data visualization services. It has been well received by the Chicago Tribune and open-government data communities. SugarSync syncs your files across multiple platforms like Windows, Mac OS X, iPhone, Android and BlackBerry. The service provides users with a desktop client which can then be used to sync files to the SugarSync servers.

Complete Guide To Using Google DFP: Part I – Advantages

A few months ago, I started using Google’s Double Click for Publishers (DFP), which is an ad serving solution for website owners. Google DFP is a bit overwhelming at first and it took me few days to get around to using it. However, I have now made a successful transition to using Google DFP and serve all the ads using it.

In my experience Google DFP is a bit complicated at start, however, it does have several advantages over traditional way of adding advertisements to your website. In this series, I will talk about the benefits of using Google DFP and also how to effectively use it on your own website with some handy tips and tricks thrown in.

Advantages of Using Google DFP

There are several advantages of using Google DFP over traditional ad insertion. I will list a few here which I have found beneficial to me and might come in handy to you too.

Less Code and Easy to Maintain

Once you start using Google DFP, you will notice that you are dealing with much lesser code while inserting or positioning advertisements. This is one thing I have found beneficial as I am able to insert ads into code with just a single click.

Create Once and Use Forever

Unlike traditional advertisement code, you can create a line item and insert it into your theme. The next time you want to display advertisements from a different network, you don’t need to create new code and that can be handled within the DFP interface itself. This makes it much more easier to experiment with different networks and quickly remove/change them if you are not satisfied with the revenue. I will talk about this in more detail in the future parts of the series.

Geo and Demographic Targeting

One of the best features of DFP is that it allows you to geo-target your ads. Using this feature you can display different ads to different locations to maximize your revenue. Another good feature is demographic targeting which allows you to target people using certain browsers or operating systems.

Demographic targeting can be very useful when you want to say advertise a certain browser; for example Google Chrome; to users using Firefox, or want to pitch Windows 7 to someone using Linux or Mac OS X.

Serve Your Own Ads/Promotions Without Worries

With the help of Google DFP you can serve your own promotions or promote your own content without having to worry about delivery or assets. You can create custom In-house ads on Google DFP and upload images etc. to Google’s servers and directly display them on your website.

In addition to that, you can also serve ads that you have directly sold on your site and provide advertisers with detailed statistics along with tracking clicks and more.

Track and Compare Impressions

Sometimes advertising companies may not show correct impressions. With the help of Google DFP, you will be able to cross-check and verify impression counts displayed by advertising networks against your own inventory.

Target Ads To Advertisers

Google and Double Click have a huge advertiser base. When you use Google DFP, you will be able to target your ad-slots to these advertisers and sell your inventory to them.

Google AdSense Integration

Using Google DFP, you will easily be able to integrate Google AdSense in your ads and maximize your revenue. In the future parts we will talk about how to do this and also create Link units for Google AdSense and serve them using Google DFP.

Rotate Ads and Banners

With the help of Google DFP, you will be able to easily rotate ads and banners without having to worry about logic. I will talk about rotating ads using Google DFP in the next part of the series.

As you can see, there are several advantages of using Google DFP over traditional advertising code. In my experience, managing advertisers has become more easier. With the ease with which I can target specific users, I am able to maximize my revenue and almost fill-up the entire inventory.

Google Steps Up Its Game Against Facebook: Calls It A “Trap”

Google might rule the roost today, but five years on the scenario might be very different. Facebook is amassing a treasure trove of data on users around the globe that might give it the competitive advantage it needs to take on Google, and Google is obviously aware of this.

Earlier this week, Google updated its ToS (Terms of Service) to stop Facebook from importing contact data from Google (Gmail). Within a couple of days, Facebook found a way around this by encouraging users to manually download and then upload their contact information. This trick ensured that users could still import information from Gmail, without Facebook needing to directly access Google’s Contacts Data API or Portable Contacts API.

As you might have guessed, Google isn’t too happy about this. After terming Facebook’s trickery as “disappointing”, Google is now resorting to a more direct approach to discourage users from importing data into Facebook.

Google is automatically displaying the following warning to all users who land on the contacts export page via Facebook:

Hold on a second. Are you super sure you want to import your contact information for your friends into a service that won't let you get it out?
Here's the not-so-fine print. You have been directed to this page from a site that doesn't allow you to re-export your data to other services, essentially locking up your contact data about your friends. So once you import your data there, you won't be able to get it out. We think this is an important thing for you to know before you import your data there. Although we strongly disagree with this data protectionism, the choice is yours. Because, after all, you should have control over your data.

Google’s motto has always been “Do No Evil”. Of late, critics have questioned Google’s dedication to that motto. However, Google obviously knows the value of being counted amongst the good guys. Even though it doesn’t want to provide Facebook free access to its social graph, it isn’t explicitly blocking its users from exporting their own data.

It will be interesting to see if this actually works. Casual users are notorious for not paying attention to messages like this. However, Google has definitely succeeded in highlighting the closed nature of Facebook, which has been criticized heavily in the past by privacy and data portability advocates. Well played Google.

Apache Software Foundation has finally woken up against Oracle’s outlook and abuse of Java. Oracle has done enough to upset everyone related to Java. With the killing of OpenOffice.org to the recent lawsuit against Google’s use of Java in the Dalvik VM, Oracle has done enough to raise an outcry and the ASF rising against Oracle is going to turn ugly for Oracle.

The ASF is the largest maintainer of Open Source projects. It has declared if Oracle continues with this attitude; the ASF will openly boycott the next version of Java coming from Oracle.

Apache Software Foundation co-founder and President Jim Jagielski said,

Why would we want to be in an organization where the rules of law don’t matter? Our being on the [JCP Executive Committee] would be a sham. It would show that the community doesn’t matter, that we’d basically cave into Oracle pushing stuff through, whether or not it would be in the best interest of the community.

ASF’s stronghold in the JCP Executive Committee and the threats to leave the position makes the matter even more serious for Oracle. What will come of this feud is unknown as Oracle is known to be stubborn but this is a matter of utmost importance and the decision will affect all businesses based around Java.

Join.me – The Easiest Screen Sharing Online

Screen sharing lets you show someone your computer screen across the internet. Usually, you can even let a viewer take over the mouse and keyboard. I use screen sharing at work to help my co-workers with computer problems, and sometimes, even I get help. Often, people use screen sharing applications to give business presentations online.

Previously, my favorite screen sharing service was TeamViewer. It's a free service, and it even includes voice and video chat. Now I am starting to use a different service, called Join.me.

Join.me is probably the simplest screen presentation service I've used. All of the these services require an installation of software on your machine. Usually, both the broadcaster (host) and the viewer (client) need to install something. Join.me breaks out of the crowd by not requiring the viewers to install any software. All they need is a modern web browser with Adobe Flash.

Here's how it works …

1. Go to Join.me

2. If you wish to share your computer screen, click on the "share" arrow.

3. This will start a download of the server software. (Windows and Mac)

Once you have it installed and running, you'll see the Join.me floating toolbar at the top of your screen.

4. Click once in the address bar and you'll be able to copy or send the sharing address.

5. The person you wish to share with, can either click the link you've sent them, or type the 9 digit number in the "Join" box at the Join.me website.

6. As soon as they join, you are sharing your screen. That's when you can start using your floating Join.me toolbar to control the session. As far as I know you can invite any number of people to your screen sharing session.

The phone icon actually lets you call them on a conference line. I haven't tried that feature because I usually call the person on my phone or use Google Voice to chat with them.

In the past we have told you about several ways to backup your WordPress database using command line and other techniques, along with backing up your FTP files.

If you find the manual backup process tedious there are several plugins which allow you to automate the backup and email you a copy of the data. However, I just came across another neat WordPress plugin which will allow you to backup your WordPress database, theme files, plugin files and more to your Dropbox account, Amazon S3 or FTP host.

The plugin which is called WP Time Machine, is definitely a neat one if you want to store offsite backups of all your data. The plugin allows you to backup all the files inside the wp-content folder and also your MySQL database. Time machine can be configured to run periodically through a WordPress Cron Job.

In addition to that, it also backs up your .htaccess file so that you can restore it if there are any problems. Visit http://wptimemachine.com/ to learn more about the plugin and start downloading it.

Backing up data is a good exercise which will help you in the long run. To top that Dropbox is a decent alternative as it provides users with 2GB free space and the ability to access files from virtually anywhere. If you don’t have a account yet, sign up for a free Dropbox account.

The Ubuntu release schedule has been modified to include more intermediate releases. The final release for April 2011 end still holds. However, the new release schedule will include three alpha versions instead of the proposed five alpha versions.

The new release schedule stands as,

December 2nd, 2010 – Alpha 1 release
February 3rd, 2011 – Alpha 2 release
March 3rd, 2011 – Alpha 3 release
March 31st, 2011 – Beta release
April 21st, 2011 – Release Candidate
April 28th, 2011 – Final release of Ubuntu 11.04

With the release of version 11.04, Ubuntu will reach a mature state with better support for ARM devices, multi-touch and a lot more. Ubuntu 11.04 codenamed Natty Narwhal will also include a new Unity Shell that will be seen on the desktop version. However, other Ubuntu forks like Mint are not yet ready to make the switch to Unity. For developers and software companies, the Ubuntu Software Center in Natty Narwhal support paid apps like the Android and iPhone app markets.

As evident from the release schedule, the first usable release, which is the beta, comes on 31 March next year. This delay, however will hardly affect many regular users, as UI (user interface) changes interest them more than behind the scene changes.

Google Testing Infinite Scroll For Search Results, Similar To Image Results?

Google has been making a lot of significant changes to the search experience of late, with most recent introductions being Google Instant, which guesses your queries before you can fully type them and also displays results as you type, and Google Instant previews which was launched earlier today and allows you to view previews of the search results.

Now, Search Engine Land is reporting that Google is also testing a new infinite scrolling results, which will continuously load results as you scroll down to the bottom of the page. This feature already exists in the new Google image search.

As you can see in the embedded video above, when you scroll to the bottom of the page, a small black bar moves you to the second page. Though there is no real indication as to when this feature will be available, you can currently have the same behavior on Google Chrome using a Chrome Extension called Auto Pager which is also available as a Firefox add-on and can be downloaded from here.

Looking at the video makes me a bit skeptical considering the image used to display page numbers. I am pretty sure that I have seen it somewhere in use and it might actually be an extension too. Nevertheless, auto scrolling of results will definitely save a lot of time for users. We’ll keep you updated when we hear more.

Update: As I had suspected, this is not a Google feature and instead uses a Chrome extension called Faster Fox which can be downloaded from here.

Hotmail Adds HTTPS Encryption For More Protection

HTTPS is a protocol which allows websites to securely transmit data from one point to another. It is more secure than the HTTP protocol because users cannot snoop in on requests and responses.

Many popular websites and banks provide users with HTTPS protection including Gmail, Facebook and Twitter. Though currently only Gmail uses HTTPS by default for full-on protection. You can always access sites like Facebook and Twitter using HTTPS too, but it is manual.

Today, the Hotmail team announced that they will be providing users with the option to enhance the security of Hotmail with HTTPS data encryption. However, right now this service is opt-in, so you will have to visit https://account.live.com/ManageSSL to set preferences to use SSL by default.

Other Microsoft services like Microsoft SkyDrive, Photos, Docs and Devices pages will automatically use SSL encryption. One thing to note here is that if you switch over to HTTPS for Hotmail, Outlook Hotmail Connector, Windows Live Mail and Windows Live application for Windows Mobile and Symbian will stop working. Future updates to these application may allow you to seamlessly use HTTPS across devices. Sadly, for people like me who use desktop applications to access Hotmail, the HTTPS will have to wait.

Also, if you think that using HTTPS will slow down or degrade services for you, you might want to look at the cost of switching to SSL Google incurred. It was minimal at the most.

Google Launches Instant Previews for Search Results

Looks like Google wants to go the instant way for everything. After launching Google Instant, they have now added a new feature to Google search which will display instant previews to users for search results.

Google had started testing Instant previews in early October, with more widespread tests in end of October. The feature was finally released to public earlier today. With Instant previews, users will be able to see a graphic overview of a search result which highlights the most relevant sections related to the search terms.

This is definitely a good thing because it will now allow users to preview pages before they actually visit it. However, from a webmaster point of view this might reduce the number of clicks you see to your website.

Here are some of the key features of Google Instant Previews:

Quickly compare results – A visual comparison of search results helps you pick the one that's right for you. Quickly flip through previews to see which page looks best.
Pinpoint relevant content – Text call outs, in orange, will sometimes highlight where your search terms appear on the webpage so you can evaluate if it's what you’re looking for.
Interact with the results page – Page previews let you see the layout of a webpage before clicking the search result. Looking for a chart, picture, map or list? See if you can spot one in the preview.

Instant Previews is currently not available for everyone and will be rolled out gradually to users across the world in the next few days.

Nvidia GTX 580 ‘The World’s Fastest DirectX11 GPU’ Unveiled

Nvidia has officially unveiled 'the world's fastest DirectX11 GPU' – the GeForce GTX 580. The GTX 580 sports 512 CUDA cores, 64 SPUs (Special Function Units) and has 1.5GB of memory. The core of the card is clocked at 772 MHz and the Shader core is clocked at 1.5GHz, while the memory is clocked at 4 GHz.

Even though the clock speed and the number of cores have been bumped up, the TDP of the GTX580 is still 6 Watts less than the GTX480 (250W). Nvidia also claims that the GTX580 will run cooler than its predecessor thanks to a new vapor-chamber cooler. The card also supports quad-SLI for phenomenal performance. Early reviews suggest that the card is 15-20% faster than its predecessor.

The card is already available on all major retail stores and should officially retail for $550.

Mozilla’s baby Firefox is turning 6 today, with a 36% market share to brag about. Six years ago Internet Explorer one of the most used browsers, that is when Firefox was launched and quickly became popular among tech enthusiasts and developers. Now, the browser boasts of more than 1/3rd of the market share.

In the past few years though, Firefox has also had to fend competition from Google Chrome and Opera who have been rising on the popularity charts. With Firefox 4 being delayed till 2011, Mozilla definitely has to buck up its game to extend their stay for several more years to come.

Opera has always been a browser with a small (as compared to Firefox or Google Chrome) but devoted following that keeps increasing with each iteration of their browser. While their simple mobile version of the browser (Opera Mini) is vastly popular – they never saw a similar growth in the desktop market. The folks at Opera Inc. thought it was probably due to the unavailability of Extensions for their browser, and so they added the extensibility of extensions in Opera 11.

So without further ado, here's a look at the top extensions for Opera 11.

NoAds: NoAds is a NoScript + AdBlock extension. In the words of its creator NoAds = (NoScript + AdBlock)/2. It blocks 99% of scripts on a site that originate from a different domain, blocks text ads and you can even import subscriptions from AdBlock as well as EHH! No more ads.

FastestTube: This simple and sweet extension just adds a drop-down menu on any YouTube video page where you can download the video that is playing in many formats. There are some minor problems with the integration with Redirect to HTTPS videos, but that should be fixed shortly.

Reddited: Are you an avid Redditor? Do you scramble up to submit a page to Reddit only to find that it's already been linked to? Do you hang your head in defeat and rage at the trolls that are laughing at you? Then this is the extension for you. All it does is tell you if the page you're looking at has been reddited or not. If it has been submitted, it shows you the comment count on the link as well.

Translate: If you're one of those anime fans without a drop of Japanese within you, or if you're the newshound who has to go to various foreign-language sites for news then this extension will do you a world of good. Translate auto-magically detects the language of the page you're currently working on and will offer to translate the entire page for you. Built on top of Google Translate framework, the translation, although slightly grammatically off, works and works well.

Opera Mini Simulator: This one is for the web developers. The add-on loads your focused tab as how it would look under the Opera Mini environment. Though a little slow when simulating, the add-on is quite useful for mobile developers.

Gmail [iOS Mode]: Don't want to wait for the Gmail page to open when all you need is to know if you have unread mail or not? Enter the Gmail [iOS Mode] extension that changes the UserAgent of Opera to an iOS device's. So you can use the slick and lean Gmail interface on your desktop browser itself!

Yes, there's a new web browser designed around the idea that you can share more, and share more quickly on Facebook and Twitter. That alone may turn some people away, depending on how much they value their privacy. However, after trying it for a short time, I can see how this browser could easily turn normal Facebook users into hyped up Uber-Facebook users.

RockMelt was founded by Eric Vishria and Tim Howes, and is backed by Netscape developer Marc Andreessen. It was released yesterday, mostly by invitation only. You can get a copy of this browser by visiting RockMelt.com and signing up via your Facebook ID.

After signing up late last night I received my invite and downloaded it. The install went fairly quick and here's the first thing I saw … a Facebook login.

Yes, that's right, it seems to be required. However, that makes sense.

It took me quite awhile to figure out most of the actions I could perform. If you open the "RockMelt" menu at the top right corner of the browser, and click the "Help" item, you'll find help for a few basic tasks. Here's the first thing you see there.

As some of you have already noticed, RockMelt is built on top of Chromium, which is the basis for Google's Chrome web browser. Those using Chrome now won't have a hard time getting around in the browser.

Rather than go into too many details, I'll show you the RockMelt video preview. It's very well done.

I tried it, I like it, and haven't found any major bugs yet. If you are already using Google Chrome, and you're in Facebook often, there's no reason not to give RockMelt a try. You don't have to make it your default browser, and it won't do anything to your current web browsers. My wife reports that Farmville works very well in Chrome and RockMelt.

Amazon Announces 70% Revenue Share For Kindle Publishers

If you write great content, you should definitely get a bigger pie of the revenue. This can be for books, videos and all other content created by users. Looks like Amazon is now understanding this and doling out a bigger pie; 70% of the revenue share; to Kindle magazine and newspaper publishers.

If you sell a title or subscription on Amazon Kindle, you will now be entitled to a 70% revenue share. The new 70% royalty will start from December 1, 2010. However, there are some restrictions on who can earn a 70% revenue, which include magazines and newspapers which are sold to:

Customers who can read the title on all Kindle devices and applications.
Customers who can read the title in all geographies for which the publisher has rights.

If you are a blog owner and publish your blog on Kindle, you will not be able to take advantage of the new revenue sharing model.

Firesheep, a Firefox add-on for snooping on Twitter and Facebook logins on open Wi-Fi connections caused quite a storm when it was released. It went on to show how insecure your computer could be.

The exploit could snoop on unprotected Wi-Fi connections and retrieve login cookies for Twitter and Facebook, which could then be used to login to a users account and access their data. If you are using an open Wi-Fi connection, the first thing to do is to to secure your Wi-Fi connection. If you need help with it, read our earlier guides Wi-Fi Demystified I and Wi-Fi Demystified II.

BlackSheep is another Firefox add-on which is designed to combat Firesheep. BlackSheep drops fake session ID information on the wire and then monitors traffic to see if it has been hijacked. If BlackSheep finds that someone is snooping on you, it will display an alert as seen in the image above.

If you have a secure Wi-Fi connection, you have nothing to worry about, but if you don’t, the threat of Wi-Fi snooping by Firesheep is pretty high. You can circumnavigate the threat by using https instead of http while accessing the websites, but to be on the safer side, install the BlackSheep add-on too, which can be downloaded from here.

Dropbox’s Experimental Build Allows Pausing File Uploads And Define Custom Upload Download Speeds

Dropbox does not have a functionality to pause the file sync activity, you start the Dropbox desktop client and the application starts indexing everything stored in your computer’s “My Dropbox” folder.

The app then maps all the files with your Dropbox account and then starts the sync procedure as usual.

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could pause the file sync activity of Dropbox for a while? May be you are currently working on a document stored in your “My Dropbox” folder and Dropbox won’t upload the latest version of the document, since it’s in use by the Word processor program.

Thankfully, the developers have released a newer experimental release of Dropbox (0.8.112) which allows you to pause Dropbox sync activity, with the touch of a button.

There is no need to close the Dropbox client from Windows system tray, simply right click the Dropbox icon and choose “Pause Syncing” or “Resume Syncing”.

Another feature worth noting is that now you can define an upload as well as download rate from Dropbox > Preferences, quite similar to Torrent clients like utorrent.

This is useful when you want to define a custom upload or download rate for file uploads or downloads from your Dropbox account. Might be useful, if your internet connection is pathetically slow and fluctuates every other minute. If the file sync activity is slowing down web surfing, video chatting and other online activities – you can pause the uploads for some time.

I tested the experimental build on my Windows7 PC and there were no problems as such. Give it a try !
